Daily excerpt from today's writing, chapter 9 of Underline the Gold:
‘There was just a day where it felt like we were fighting with your body,’ Anton said, his voice breaking. Oh, my love, Flitmouse thought, rubbing his side and frowning. ‘Temsen said your organs have really been through it. With the… With the anorexia. And I think maybe a lot of other things in your past. Your body is a lot weaker than an omega’s should be at your age. I didn’t realise how fragile you were. I don’t think Temsen did, and he’s seen the test results.’ ‘But I’m… But I’m still here, aren’t I?’ ‘Do you- Do you even want to be here?’ Flitmouse was silent for a time, and then he sighed. ‘If it’s with you, Anton, then…yes, I might want to be here.’ Anton looked up at him, though the dark room made eye contact nearly impossible. ‘Really?’ ‘Don’t tell anyone else I told you, my dear. It’s a secret. Just a secret, for now. It’s- It’s terrifying to think this way. I don’t suddenly want to live, I haven’t- I haven’t suddenly realised it’s a good thing. I just want to selfishly spend more time with you.’

I know that I've mentioned several times how I had to go through a period of relearning once I got out of the religious environment in which I'd been raised, and like... A lot of the things I had to research and learn about all over again were fairly obvious, like climate change. My parents and teachers told me that man-made climate change wasn't real, so I believed them. Once I got to college, I realized that I'd been misled, and I had to relearn the whole topic.
But not all of these things were obvious! I went through this period where I didn't even know what part of my education I should be questioning. Like... what do I even research?? Do I actually understand weather? What about history?
One of the reasons I bring up history is because one of the things my parents told me wasn't real was radiocarbon dating. And I don't just mean "well, these are estimations, can't be used for precise dates, and might be somewhat off due to atmospheric conditions." I got the whole "well, this is unprovable* and goes against the history the Bible gives us so you shouldn't trust carbon dating at all."
(*I was taught that anything that wasn't like... observable in real-time was not provable.)
Let's just say... a lot of my childhood was adults around me hedging their bets like "I'm not saying this is fake, I'm just saying it can't be proven and they're asking us to take this hypothesis as fact! I'm just saying you should question things! And not believe those liberal scientists!"
(carbon dating, evolution, the big bang/quantum physics, whether humans and dinosaurs coexisted, climate change, how hiv works, etc.)
And uhhh I went into archaeology (among other things) when I first started college, so you can imagine how this impeded my studies. lmao
idk, I guess I'm not going anywhere in particular with this. I was just listening to a podcast that's currently talking about the paleolithic period and I still had a gut instinctual reaction of "well, you don't know these things are that old" that I had to squash like a fucking bug.
I definitely understand exactly how the "it's good to be curious and read sources critically" to "question everyone, especially experts" to "those liberal scientists are trying to trick you" to "fake news!!" pipeline comes about. ;;

Spotted (pun intended) this on Instagram…(arg cissexist headline 🙄)
Glad this info is finally out! Even if a lot of us are saying, well yeah, no shit right now.
This^ isn’t the study I participated in or promoted, but I discovered that the article published here linked to that study’s results too:
Of course, I am 100% pro vaccine, but I’m also 100% having the right to understand all the ways it could affect your body.

Covid and Flu Vaccine PSA
For anyone who might benefit from this advice, as a heads up, the CDC has released guidelines (available as a PDF here) that link patient weight and appropriate needle length for intramuscular vaccines. They suggest that using a longer 1.5 inch/38 mm needle for Covid and flu shots is medical best practice for many. The CDC uses weight-based metrics on their chart (>200lbs or 260 lbs for estrogen- or testosterone-based fat distribution, respectively), but really, it’s most important to consider your own body fat distribution. This big thing is ensuring that the vaccine can reach your deltoid muscle for the greatest efficacy and uptake, rather than only making it to subcutaneous fat!
Even if you’ve already gotten vaccinated/boosted this year, it might be worth hanging onto the PDF for the future - having clear guidelines that come directly from the CDC might help to cut through some of the bullshit too many people face when dealing with the medical establishment.

How Personal Life Experience Changes How you think
My grandpa is a conservative. He watches Fox News everyday and I have to listen to that shit from my room unless I can find some music to drown out the nonsense.
He's what you'd expect from a conservative with some key exceptions. He doesn't get the whole "transgender" thing, but he thinks vaccines should be mandatory.
Why would he think that? How did that happen? Well it turns out he lived through Polio and his brother had to be put in an iron lung
Tumblr media
This is an iron lung. You get put in it when you get REALLY sick and the machine compresses your lungs at different intervals to help you breathe. My great uncle had to be in one of these because they didn't have the vaccine yet.
My grandpa might not be perfect, or even that great a guy, but he sees vaccines as a miracle. Get your vaccine.
If you're scared of getting your vaccine, ask your doctor questions. They want to help you, they can find the information for you. If you want to know what's in it and what the ingredients do, please ask. If you want to know how vaccines work in general (they all follow a similar formula because diseases work in a similar way, fundamentally speaking), please ask. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Please don't keep yourself in the dark because your worried about government conspiracies. Just ask questions.
Let this be a reminder that the average American is not blue or red alone. We are all varying shades of purple, even if the people meant to represent us don't see us that way. People learn, people grow. You just have to be patient.

whooooo having an anxiety attack about covid. again 👍
#cw negative#cw vent#nowe talks#it's hard to describe what about it is the worst source of anxiety for me. it's not What If I Get It. it's mostly just. it's just.#i sometimes feel like our society has just forgotten that it's a thing. or that society has forgotten that it's A SERIOUS THING.#like this thing that Kills People.#i know it's not lethal to most people but it still is a very serious thing!#why have we as a society shifted from “protecting the people most affected is a collective responsibility#(via vaccination and masking and not showing up to places sick)“#to “well what if all the people belonging to risk groups just deal with this on their own and the rest of us go back to normal?”#idk man maybe i'm sensitive because my grandma died of covid a week before Christmas last year.#or because both of my parents are over 60 and my dad has another risk factor illness on top of that.#idk man. i just feel so. unsafe. unsure and scared and tired. i just dont want other people to go through what our family did last december#i want to stress that i'm not blaming any individual people for this.#my frustration is almost solely directed towards the goverment not taking covid seriously enough#and like i'm not perfect. i'm not sure what's the right thing to do and what's me overreacting.#i recognize that i am often incapable of thinking clearly about this subject#sometimes i feel like i am the only one in my circle (family included) who is this worried about it still. i'm not blaming my loved ones#i'm not saying i'm better than them that's not it. i just. sometimes i just feel so alone with this#and idk how to make it better?#like i have good moments and bad moments with this anxiety. it comes and goes. but. idk.#i think her death's anniversary coming closer combined with the rising covid numbers in my country is just doing a number on me

“Singapore has eliminated rubella, the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Verification Commission for Measles and Rubella Elimination for the Western Pacific announced today.
“Singapore has been working progressively towards meeting the criteria for rubella elimination following our attainment of measles elimination status in 2018. We are very pleased to be verified by the Regional Verification Commission to have met the criteria for rubella elimination. We will continue to maintain our efforts in the prevention and control of rubella through a robust immunization programme, disease surveillance and swift response,” said Professor Vernon Lee, Senior Director, Communicable Diseases, Ministry of Health, Singapore.
A viral infection occurring most often in children and young adults, rubella is the leading vaccine-preventable cause of birth defects worldwide. While no specific treatment exists for rubella – which is transmitted by airborne droplets when infected people sneeze or cough – infection can be prevented with safe, effective and inexpensive vaccines.
Pregnant women who contract rubella are at risk for miscarriage or stillbirth, and their developing babies are at risk for birth defects with devastating, lifelong consequences, including deafness, cataracts, heart defects and intellectual disabilities.
“The elimination of rubella is great news for pregnant women and children in Singapore. It shows once again the value of vaccines in protecting people from debilitating and deadly diseases,” said Dr Huong Tran, Director of Programmes for Disease Control in the WHO Western Pacific Region...
In the Western Pacific Region, seven countries and areas have interrupted endemic transmission of the virus that causes rubella: Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Hong Kong SAR (China), Macao SAR (China), New Zealand, the Republic of Korea and Singapore.
Over the past decade, rubella cases have decreased dramatically in the Region, as millions of babies and young children have been reached with measles- and rubella-containing vaccines through measles elimination activities.” -via World Health Organization via Future Crunch, 9/16/22
