Murderous 1600s Pirate Henry Every Hid Out in US Colonies
One tarnished silver coin at a time, the ground is yielding new evidence that in the late 1600s, one of the world's most ruthless pirates wandered the American colonies with impunity.
Newly surfaced documents also strengthen the case that English buccaneer Henry Every — the target of the first worldwide manhunt — hid out in New England before sailing for Ireland and vanishing into the wind.
“At this point, the amount of evidence is overwhelming and indisputable,” historian and metal detectorist Jim Bailey, who's devoted years to solving the mystery, told The Associated Press. “Every was undoubtedly on the run in the colonies.”
In 2014, after unearthing an unusual coin engraved with an Arabic inscription at a pick-your-own-fruit orchard in Middletown, Rhode Island, Bailey began retracing Every’s steps.
Research confirmed that the exotic coin was minted in 1693 in Yemen. Bailey then discovered that it was consistent with millions of dollars’ worth of coins and other valuables seized by Every and his men in their brazen Sept. 7, 1695, sacking of the Ganj-i-Sawai, an armed royal vessel owned by Indian emperor Aurangzeb.
Historical accounts say Every's band tortured and killed passengers aboard the Indian ship and raped many of the women before escaping to the Bahamas, a haven for pirates. But word quickly spread of their crimes, and English King William III — under enormous pressure from a scandalized India and the influential East India Company trading giant — put a large bounty on their heads.
Detectorists and archaeologists have since located 26 similar coins stretching from Maine to the Carolinas. All but three coins turned up in New England, and none can be dated later than when the Indian ship was captured.
“When I first heard about it, I thought, ‘Wait a minute, this can’t be true,’” said Steve Album, a rare coin specialist based in Santa Rosa, California, who helped identify all of the silver Arabic coins found in New England.
“But these coins have been found legitimately and in a few instances archaeologically, and every single one predates the sacking of the ship," said Album, who has lived in Iran and has traveled widely in the Middle East.
Detectorists have also unearthed a gold nugget weighing 3 grams (a tenth of an ounce) — slightly heavier than a U.S. penny — from a potato field perched on a hilltop in seaside Little Compton, Rhode Island.
There’s no documented evidence that naturally occurring gold has ever been found in the state. Bailey and other experts believe that the nugget likely originated somewhere along Africa's Gold Coast, a center for the slave trade in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Adding to the intrigue, two silver Arabic coins were recovered not far from the nugget, and Every is known to have seized a considerable amount of gold while sailing off the coast of West Africa.
The latest evidence putting Every on American soil isn't just metallic — it includes paper and pixels.
Bailey had already found records showing that the Sea Flower, a ship used by Every and his men after they ditched the vessel they'd used in their murderous raid, arrived in 1696 in Newport, Rhode Island. He's since surfaced documents that show that the pirate captain was accompanied by three Rhode Islanders he took aboard from another pirate vessel when he fled India. All three came ashore with Every in the Bahamas on March 30, 1696, and Bailey said that they essentially served as getaway drivers in exchange for plunder.
Captured pirates William Phillips and Edward Savill testified on Aug. 27, 1696, that one of two ships that left the Bahamas went to Virginia and New England before reaching Ireland. Critically, Bailey said, the records clarify a muddy timeline that long has been misinterpreted by historians to suggest Every lingered two months on the Caribbean island — something he'd never have done as a fugitive.
“There's no way he stayed in the Bahamas to sit on the beach and work on his tan while waiting to be captured,” Bailey said. “Indeed, Every was in New England for over a month weighing his options for starting his life anew in the colonies or going back home to England.”
Every’s exploits have inspired Steven Johnson's book “Enemy of All Mankind,” and the final installment of PlayStation’s popular “Uncharted” video game franchise. Earlier this year, Sony Pictures released a movie adaptation starring Tom Holland, Mark Wahlberg and Antonio Banderas.
Bailey’s next challenge: figuring out what happened to Every after the trail ran cold following his arrival in Ireland on June 20, 1696. It's the mystery's elusive final chapter — one he hopes to detail in a forthcoming book about the cold case.
“We’re chasing down the lost history behind one of the greatest crimes of the 17th century,” he said.

thinking about bank robberies in the 30s makes me soooooooo angry. those days you could just pull out some guns with your friends and get away scot free. now you have to deal with security cameras and metal detectors and they don’t even have big vaults full of gold like they used to. technology ruined the bank robbing industry

All that glitters isn't always gold...
..sometimes it's just gold lame. Or Lurex. Or Mylar.
OK - so what the heck is lame? (pronounced 'lah-MAY') It was traditionally fabric made from metal fibers wrapped around other fibers, like silk or rayon. It was designed to create a metallic shine to clothing, so clothes were typically gold, silver, or copper colored. Besides style, lame was used in fencing uniforms which allowed the electrified sabers to register a 'hit' against an opponent.
Lurex is a close cousin to lame. In fact, you could claim they're in the same household since Lurex vaporized metal onto other fibers.
Today most manufacturers use Mylar, a polyester film that creates a metallic look, like with the one piece bathing suit I'm wearing. The trouble with Mylar is, after a while, it starts to peel off the backing fabric. Which makes clothing unappealing.
But, on the good side of things, a mylar swimsuit like this one is just fine for passing through airport metal detectors.

AND WITHIN MINUTES ALL THAT HOPE DIED. There was no gold. Just a shipwreck. The drone passed over the entire thing three times and nothing. The metal detector didn’t make a single sound.
“Just pull the damn thing up.” John B said, frustrated. “Somebody beat us to it.”
“Or it was never there.” JJ muttered, steering the boat back in the direction you’d come.
WAKING UP TO MARLEY LICKING YOUR FACE WASN’T AN UNCOMMON OCCURRENCE, you assumed it’d just felt so unfamiliar because of the fact that you hadn’t slept in your own bed the last few days since this whole gold rush started. You groaned, lightly pushing the dog away from you with your palm.
“I’m awake, Marls…” You groaned out sleepily, rolling off of your bed with a grunt as you hit the floor, your side still sore from the events of yesterday. The pain was mostly gone, all that remained being a tenderness and slight redness surrounding the area.
Rolling onto your back and sitting up, you pet the chipper animal as she snuggled up under you. “Jesus, your morning breath is worse than mine.” You said, face twisting. Reaching for your phone as you scratched the top of her head, you saw that it was close to noon, you sighed, getting up and walking downstairs to get your day started.
You were surprised to find your mother shifting through documents on the kitchen island when you got there, slowing in your steps. “Hey, mom…” You said, eyeing the woman as you opened the fridge to pull out the milk. She merely glanced up at you, before averting her eyes back down to the documents in front of her.
“Morning.” She muttered. You faced away from her, hearing the pen she was writing with hit the counter as you walked to the side and grabbed the cereal from the pantry. “Did you hear about Topper’s boat?”
You bit your lip, completely forgetting about that. Realizing you hadn't responded and stood frozen in place, you cleared your throat and continued making your breakfast. “No, what happened?” You asked, faking obliviousness and pouring the cereal into a bowl, now facing her again. She had the papers in her hands, reading glasses sitting low atop her nose as her eyes scanned the pages as she spoke.
“He and Mrs.Thornton found it sunken this morning. What a waste of money. I hear it was brand-new.”
“Yeah, well, it’s Topper.” You remembered, pouring the milk over the colorful pellets of food. “Him and his friends aren’t exactly known for being careful.” You muttered with disdain.
“Speaking of caution,” The woman began, clasping her hands in front of her. “I had an interesting meeting with Sheriff Peterkin and Shoupe. They said John B was being chased through town by some dangerous men earlier in the week and he apparently ran from his social worker when she went to pick him up this morning. Do you know what’s going on with him?”
“I don’t know, Mom, maybe the fact that his dad went missing and DCS has been trying to drop him into the system ever since?”
All she could do was sigh. “John B’s father is gone. It’s been almost a year. He needs to accept that and move on.”
“...He needs to just accept the fact that his dad is gone? Do you hear yourself, right now?”
“Listen, I don’t have the energy to argue with you, right now. If you see him or know where he is, it’d be very much appreciated if you could tell Shoupe or Peterkin so they can alert his social worker-”
You scoffed, looking your mother in her eyes. “I'm not doing that. You're crazy if you think I'm going to help you and your cop friends put one of my best friends into foster care-”
“Excuse me?” Your mother was baffled at your tone. But it seemed like everytime you came home recently, on the rare occasion that you did, she always had questions. Scratch questions, accusations. And in your mind, either she knew something or she just wanted reasons to be on your ass. “I don't know what's gotten into you recently. If your father could see you now-”
“No, mom,” You cut her off shortly. “If only he could see you.” You spat, making your way back up the stairs, bowl of cereal in hand, slamming the door behind you.
“AREN’T YOU GLAD I MADE YOU COME?” Kie asked cheerfully, carrying a cooler full of snacks and drinks while you laid out a blanket on top of the grass, JJ and Pope unfolding lawn chairs to sit in. Kie had rounded you all up to see a movie in the park with her. You’d already informed them of the reason for John B’s absence, seeing as this isn’t his first marathon from DCS. If he got away successfully, per usual, you all would be seeing him by tomorrow.
“My couch was pretty comfy, I’ll be honest.” JJ replied. While Kiara was preoccupied, Pope whispered to JJ, but you could still hear them.
“We are in enemy territory. Way out of the green zone, man.” He was visibly anxious, eyes fleeting all across the crowd of people that littered the lawn.
“Dude, tranquilo, okay?” JJ tried to calm him.
“We are in the middle of Kooklandia.” He hissed. “This is the last place I wanted to be.” He ranted, the two boys not even noticing when Kiara got up to go get drinks.
“Shut up. Both of you.” You reprimanded, sternly. “God, you have the worst poker faces I’ve ever seen.”
“They could be lurking in the bushes right now, we don’t know.” Pope tried to make you understand.
“Dude, just chill out.” JJ said. Just then, Kie had come back, four cans of soda in her arms that she distributed evenly amongst the group of you.
“Just saw Rafe,” The name alone sends a small wave of chills down your spine. “He said to ‘tell your girl that we know what she and your boy did’. What does that mean?” Her eyes fleeted towards you for the most part.
“Where is he?” You questioned without hesitation.
“Right there,” She motioned behind her, prompting you to whip your head around to where Topper, Rafe, and Kelce stood menacingly by a tree, sipping on beers. Even from that distance, you could tell he was staring dead at you. It brought back so many unwanted feelings and memories, so badly it made your head hurt.
“Great, the whole death squad.” Pope’s voice cracked.
“Hey,” Kiara’s voice called from beside you, just loud enough for only you to hear. You turned back to face her. “What’s going on? Is he still bothering you? Is it about what happened-”
“No, it’s not.” You were quick to cut her off in case the guys were listening. “It’s not about that.” You said sternly, tuning back into JJ and Pope’s conversation.
“If they corner me, I’m comin’ out swingin. I’m on edge right now.” JJ spoke seriously. “If that doesn’t work, I got this right here.” He assured, holding up his backpack that looked mostly empty but oddly heavy.
“JJ, please tell me you did not bring a gun here. JJ, there are kids!” Kie started, being oddly loud for not wanting people to know that JJ may or may not have brought a gun.
“I didn’t bring the gun, Kiara. Everything’s fine.” He tried to calm her.
“That’s really convincing.” She said, voice full of sarcasm. “...What happened? What did you guys do?” She asked, eyes going back and forth between the three of you that remained quiet. “Founding principle, no secrets among pogues. What is Rafe talking about?”
“Kie,” Pope started, voice low. “It might go down tonight.”
YOU ALL WERE A GOOD WAY INTO THE MOVIE AT THIS POINT, the sun had gone down and the air had cooled. The only sounds filling your ears were the movie playing and crickets in the trees. You were sitting in between JJ’s legs, using the base of his lawn chair as a backrest to ease the pain on your side from trying to keep yourself up. You’d heard him and Pope whispering but paid no mind until the blonde was tapping your shoulder, signaling that he was getting up.
“Where are you guys going?” You questioned, looking up at him and adjusting the chair from where it had slipped behind you once he got up.
“We gotta wring it out.”
“Together?” Kie asked.
“It’s bro code. Bro’s who piss together…” He struggled to find a rhyme with the made-up honor code. “...stick together. We’ll be right back.” You watched as the pair of boys crouched, creeping through the crowd and over to a tree next to the projector screen. You questioned why they didn’t head to the actual bathrooms but quickly got your answer with a quick glance back, seeing Rafe and his goons blocking it.
“Now, do you want to tell me what’s going on?” Kie whispered.
You sighed, curling in on yourself slightly. “Trust me, it’s better if you don’t know.” The girl scoffed and shook her head.
“Do the guys know? About what happened?”
“No. Why would they?”
“Do you ever plan on telling them?” You rolled your eyes, starting to get frustrated.
“No, Kie, I don’t. I’d like to forget it ever happened, if that’s okay with you.” You snapped, silence falling over the two of you as the movie continued to play.
You assumed maybe a handful of minutes had gone by before you noticed the guys hadn’t come back yet and one weary glance behind you told you all you needed to know — Rafe, Kelce, and Topper were gone, too.
You immediately shook Kie’s arm, startling the poor girl.
“What? What is it?”
“We need to go. Now.” Was all you said before you got up, taking JJ’s bag with you as you and Kie swiftly walked in the direction the guys had gone earlier so as to not alarm any movie viewers. Coming around the back of the projector screen, you were met with a brutal scene in front of you — Kelce held JJ by his arms as Rafe delivered blow after blow to his face while Topper beat up Pope.
“Let go of him! Fascist asshole!” Kie yelled as she whacked Topper in the back over and over. You made a b-line for Rafe, throwing JJ’s bag down and jumping onto the boy’s back, wounding your arms around his neck, allowing JJ an open opportunity to push Kelce off of him.
“Leave him alone, Rafe!” You screeched.
“You don’t wanna do this, sunshine!” He yelled back, throwing you off of his back and onto the grass. Just like yesterday, you were on your back as he stared down at you, breathing heavily. “I’m being nice. Only ‘cause you’re my favorite.” He smirked, huffing with blood in the corner of his lip before turning back to JJ.
You rolled on your side in the grass to see Topper choking out Pope only after having seen him throw Kiara to the ground. JJ had Rafe handled. You reached for JJ’s bag that had been abandoned, flipping it open to reveal the gun and a lighter. Your eyes went back and forth between the gun and Topper, who had Pope in a deadly chokehold at this point.
You wanted to do it, so bad.
But a gun to a Kook's head was what caused all of this in the first place, so you dismissed the thought, kicking the lighter over to Kie, the object hitting the sole of her shoe.
The girl looked down at the lighter and then at you, you motioned towards the projector screen and she caught on quickly. It wasn’t long before the projector screen was going up in flames, scaring the movie guests and breaking up the fight, spooking the guys. Topper released Pope as JJ pushed Kelce back once more, Rafe stood off in the middle of the four guys, staring directly at you as you got up.
When he snapped out of whatever trance he was in, he gathered up Topper and Kelce and fled the scene. Kie helped Pope up as you turned your attention to JJ. He was fixing his clothes but you didn’t miss the scars on his cheek and bottom lip.
“Are you okay?” You asked frantically, eyes roaming his entire face for any more cuts.
“Fine, I’m fine.” He calmed you as you laid a hand on his shoulder before trailing it up to the back of his neck, but he looked like he wanted to say something. Like he was thinking extremely hard.
“C’mon, let’s go.” You urged the rest of your group, leaving before the fire department and cops inevitably made their appearance.
“I JUST ACTED OFF INSTINCT, MAN. I WAS A CORNERED ANIMAL.” Pope told JJ as he restocked some items on the shelves inside of Heyward’s. It was the next morning but you were all still on edge about the fight last night. It was clear now that Topper knew Pope and yourself were the ones who sank his boat and you were just waiting for the other shoe to drop.
“Don’t feel bad, dude. It was three of them and two of us.” JJ tried to remedy it. “That’s some typical Kook shit right there.”
“Hell yeah.” Kie agreed.
“Hey Pope,” Heyward’s voice rang out in the small crab-shack, towel slung over the older man’s shoulder. “There’s someone here to see you.” He motioned behind him, Deputy Shoupe making his appearance.
Pope’s posture immediately straightened, his eyes going wide as the shop went silent with Shoupe’s arrival. “Evening, officer.” He barely got out. Shoupe’s eyes went between you and Pope before replying.
“You’re both here. Great.” He said, reaching into his holster. “I have an arrest warrant for felony destruction of property. For both of you.”
“Woah, woah, woah…” Heyward was stunned as he stood back and watched the scene play out in front of him.
“Keep your hands on the counter where I can see ‘em.” Shoupe handcuffed Pope first, the boy putting up no fight in his daze. He looked like he’d faint any moment.
“Shoupe, what’d they do?!” Heyward tried again.
“Look at the warrant.” Was all the deputy offered in response, remaining stoic. Once Pope was secure, he moved onto you, looking you in the eyes somewhat pitifully before beckoning for you to turn around and put your hands behind your back. Heyward, Kiara, and JJ were causing commotion, talking over one another as he secured you in handcuffs.
“Anything you say can and will be used against you in the court of law. You have the right to an attorney…” He continued but you could barely hear him as he single-handedly guided both you and Pope out of Heyward’s Seafood. Pope’s father, JJ, and Kie follow close behind.
“Shoupe, it was just me.” You tried, craning your neck to look at the officer. “Pope didn’t do anything.”
“Nice try, kiddo. But there were two people on that boat, caught it on camera. And your face is as clear as day.” He dismissed you.
“It was me!” JJ yelled, causing Shoupe to stop in his tracks. The three of you turned around to look at the blonde. “...Pope tried to talk us out of it. But Y/N and I were just too mad because they’d just been beaten up. I was so sick of those Figure Eight assholes." He spoke convincingly, eyes landing on Pope's ashamed figure. "I can’t let you take the blame for something I did.” JJ was now right in front of Pope, looking the boy dead in his eyes. “You’ve got too much to lose.”
“JJ, what’re you doing?” Pope said hushed but still aggressive.
“I’m telling the truth, for once in my damn life.” He said without much hesitation at all. “I took his old man’s boat, too.”
“What the hell…” Heyward looked crazily at the blonde boy.
“He’s a good kid.” JJ told Shoupe. “...You know where I’m from.” Shoupe nodded lightly, agreeing with the statement before his attention was on you and Pope.
“That the whole truth, Pope?” Shoupe inquired, cocking an unbelievable eyebrow.
He seemed to ponder on it before gulping heavily and nodding his head shakily, looking at JJ one last time. “Yeah…that," He huffed. "That covers it.”
YOU’D NEVER SEEN THE INSIDE OF A JAIL CELL, not that you ever planned on it. It was suffocating. The walls, the color of the walls, the dingy bars, the stale air. You felt like a caged animal, an unwelcome chill making the experience that much more unbearable.
You and JJ sat across from one another — on the floor, legs bent underneath with your heads thrown back.
“Why’d you do it?” You questioned, your voice echoing out within the cell. "Take the fall, I mean..."
“I couldn’t let Pope go down for it.” His raspy voice replied. “I would’ve taken the fall for you both. But I heard Shoupe, they had footage of two people and your face was ‘as clear as day’.” He mocked the older man’s southern twang.
The action made you chuckle, craning your head down to look at him, not aware that he was already looking at you.
You sighed, shaking your head and running fingers through the base of your hair. “I should’ve never suggested it in the first place. I knew it was a stupid idea, I just wasn’t in the right headspace…”
“Because of Rafe?” The question made your heart stop, eyes jumping up to his before fleeting to the ground. “It’s not hard to notice. He clearly knows you, knows you. But I just…can’t put the pieces together. What happened between you two?”
You looked down at your hands that were now wound around your knees, your fingers fiddling with each other. “A lot of things happened, when I first moved to Figure Eight and fell in with Kiara and I’s old friend group. Let’s just... leave it at that.”
The blonde was looking at you like he wanted to press for more information and you knew one day he would, and with the way recent events have played out? That day might come sooner than you were comfortable with. But for right now, you just couldn’t wait until you got out of this cell. Somehow.

list of shipnames in jrwi and who they are referring to
this is (and probably forever will be) a work in progress. i plan on expanding this list with any and all shipnames i come across, so if you want to see the up-to-date list, make sure to open the original post. also feel free to send me shipnames that are missing from this list to my inbox or over dms.
note: not all of these are extremely common or in circulation quite yet, but you might encounter them every now and then anyways.
note x2: for some of these ships there are multiple names in use, i tried to sort them by how common they are (most common to least common)
‼️ important disclaimer! this is an archival work, meant to list as many ship names as possible for a variety of uses. this means this list does include ships that might be triggering for some. regardless of my feelings about it, abusive, unrealistic, or violent ships as well as underage and incest are pretty much always a facet of fandom, and as such they are represented here, partially to give people the necessary information to be able to circumvent being confronted with said content (e.g. via muting tags) should they want/need to. ‼️

a slave's collar is their most important accessory. not only does it show that they're owned, but with stylization and customization, it can also show who exactly owns them. Mistress prefers a nice rose gold band with floral engravings. to the unsuspecting, it looks like a fancy metal choker or extravagant piece of jewelry. but to those who do know, it's true purpose is undeniable.
the collar is equipped with the obvious essential features: gps, microphone, motion trackers, proximity sensors, and various devices that monitor my every movement. of course, all those features would be pretty pointless if Mistress didn't have a way to control me. that's why there are five electrodes placed equidistant from each other at various points along my neck. the electrodes can be controlled manually by a secure program that only Mistress has access to. all five can be fired individually, with 25 levels of intensity. 1 is a mild tickle. 5 is a painful shock, but relatively manageable as long as it's not prolonged. 10 is enough to bring me to my knees as I cry and beg for her to stop. she has only ever used 11 once, and I blacked out immediately. as for 25... don't worry about it
the collar features an incredibly secure and tamper-proof locking system. as it's locked, various circuits are armed. if the lock is broken and those circuits are broken... um... well. maybe you're thinking I can just wait for the battery to drain completely before taking it off without issue. think again, because there are two batteries installed that last quite a long time without a charge. the collar itself doesn't use all that much electricity, but in the case that one battery is completely drained, it will switch to the second battery. both batteries can last about 5 months each, so I'd have to go almost a year without charging for it to even reach depletion. also, once the final battery reaches its last 5% of charge, all the remaining electricity is released at once through the electrodes at level 25 until there is nothing left. basically, my collar isn't coming off with me alive.
I never have to worry about low batteries, however. Mistress has installed a number of radio frequency wireless charging devices around her mansion, meaning that as long as I am inside, my battery remains at almost full charge. the only time it has ever dipped below 99.7% is one afternoon when Mistress was extremely mad at her father and decided to take her anger out on me. whatever makes her happy makes me happy. I'm glad that my suffering is cathartic for her.
alongside the chargers, proximity detectors are placed on the outside walls. if I get to close to an exit, Mistress is automatically notified and a level 1 shock is admitted. if I get even closer, the shock is amplified dramatically. stepping outside is a level 25. the only way I'm ever allowed outside is if Mistress manually disables the 'electric fence' as she calls it. but when she does that, she has a separate system that acts in a similar way that shocks me more the further away from her I get.
you might think that all of this is unnecessary. all these systems and programs are what you might call "exceptionally overkill" or "horribly sadistic" or "just plain cruel". but the main reason they exist actually isn't to keep me in line. even if trying to take my collar off didn't kill me, I wouldn't ever dream of removing it. I would never go outside unless Mistress made me, even without the electric fence active. even the 25 levels of shock are a display of power. I'm small enough that level 13 would probably be enough to kill me.
the reason all these things exist is actually to show everyone that every single aspect of my life is completely under Mistress's control. I already know it's pointless to try and escape or fight back. I realized that before the collar was ever locked around my throat. all the ways in which Mistress has power over me are already obvious to me. because these precautions aren't for me. they're for you. to terrify you, and show you exactly what happens to people who wrong my Mistress. unless you want to end up like me, I strongly recommend you stay on her good side.

Here’s a thought experiment that could probably never reasonably happen for you. Let’s say the rest of the pines family was put in a similar position to ford: They have something they are attempting to do but cannot figure out on their own no matter how hard they try (For ford it was figuring out the weirdness magnetism). For the others, we could say that Dipper’s is functionally the same, Stan’s is trying to make a fortune so his family will take him back, and Mabel…I don’t really know what mabel would want.
For whatever reason, bill thinks that he can use this to get the portal made. Perhaps he thinks that if he basically holds their hand the whole time he can get them to do this.
Now my question is: Without knowledge of who he is beforehand, how easily could he manipulate them like he manipulated Ford? And for Stan specifically, would what Ford said about “seeing him for the scam artist he is” hold up when what is probably his biggest regret and fuck up prior to pushing Ford out to interdimensional sea is being dangled over his head?
Pretty damn easily.
He did manipulate Dipper and he did manipulate Mabel and they do know who he is. How much more easily could he have manipulated them if they'd only known him as a "muse" or as an "advanced alien life form, presenting as a triangle because his true form is incomprehensible to human eyes, because he's impressed by your potential" or as a "magical dream fairy, traveling through sleeping minds to help young girls' dreams come true!"
If they talked to each other, Dipper would probably be able to figure out Mabel's being conned ("if he's gonna make your dreams come true why do you have to do all this stuff for HIM? Has he SAID what he'll do to help you and why he can't just do it NOW?") and Mabel would probably be able to figure out Dipper's being conned ("bro, he's DROWNING you in flattery. If he really means it, why's he acting like you have to PROVE your smartness by doing this big dumb thing for him?"), but I don't think either would figure it out alone until it was too late. There's a reason Bill only targets them when they're isolated from each other.
Stan got suckered by a spider girl flirting with him after he knew she was a spider girl. We see him thinking that a lot of truly terrible ideas are gonna make him a fortune—searching for gold with a metal detector, becoming a door-to-door salesman, whatever terrible ideas he got roped into that landed him in prison... I think Stan would have the best odds of figuring Bill out, but I don't think he's immune to getting conned.
Stan's able to punch out Bill while Bill is trying to offer him power and fame and fortune because he already knows who Bill is and hates him for messing with his family. But if Bill had come to Stan at age 25, presented himself as something just sleazy enough to be believable—maybe not "divine muse" but something like "greed demon who helps promising but unlucky young entrepreneurs turn their luck around" ("Sure I'm the real deal, pal, why do you think my face is on every buck in your wallet?!"), and made the same fame and fortune offers, I think Stan's only hesitation would be "What's the catch? What's in it for YOU?" If Bill comes up with anything even SLIGHTLY plausible—"I feed on greed, kid, the more money you make the more power I get, and you don't even have to give me a cut of the profits"—then Stan's sold.
Even easier if he somehow identifies Stan's REAL priorities. "Your brother only turned his back on you because dear old ma and pa made him feel like the family's financial future rests on his shoulders. He's out there trying to make 'em millionaires and miserable about it. He hates it as much as you do. Come home with a fortune and he'd drop everything to go sailing with you in an instant. It'd be a relief, even. Don't you wanna be your brother's hero?"
While Ford put absolute blind faith in Bill up until the portal incident, I think Stan would start getting uneasy and suspicious before anything's wrong; even if Bill isn't waving any red flags yet, if everything is TOO easy it might worry Stan. But isn't easy GOOD? Didn't he always want a get-rich-quick scheme? He'd be worried, but he'd keep going—sunk cost fallacy—and tell himself it'll work out in the end. It has to.

Lifting tips from your pretty lifter 💕
(Common)
tip 1: Sounds silly but the smarter you dress the less likely you are going to be watched. You can be followed round shops even when not lifting just because of how you dress. Dont wear baggy clothes or any tracksuits of the sort since security are going to assume things. You can usually wear a nice t shirt or polo with some jeans to somewhat seem to fit in.
(Uncommon)
Tip 2:Sometimes library books will set off the detector, esp college library books. They have the same type of RFID strip inside the binding.
Keep a library book in your bag, if the detector goes off, take the book out and say "I know, this thing has been going off all day."
Sometimes you can see the rfid tag between pages to show the rentacop, but it's supposed to be buried under the binding. If you buy a withdrawn library book from a library book sale, find and expose the tag, and remove the stickers and markings that say "withdrawn", you'll have an ersatz excuse book for life.
(Uncommon)
Tip 3:The general principle of "be seen making a transaction" applies very well to all shoplifting. You go from potential thief to paying customer in their minds so fast if you just buy something small.
(Rare) rip and replace method [NEW]
Tip 4:Find a tag on sale that describes the more expensive item you want. Say the tag came off or try to put the new tag through the size tag or fabric. Add a few other items to your purchase so it’s not too suspicious.
I’ve only done this in fast fashion retailers and it’s worked every time.
You’re paying for it, but most likely the price it’s actually worth.
GOLD MINE TIP:
* Walking through the door and immediately heading to the back of the store. People almost never do this unless they're up to something. Bonus points for averting eye contact
* Wearing unseasonable or loose fitting clothing. If you've got on two or three jackets, or huge baggy pants, and it's 90 degrees outside, the store is going to watch you. Most times I've seen people try to steal something - It's been by shoving merchandise in their pants. We always notice.
* Walking through the department with nothing in your cart, leaving, and then coming back, still with nothing in your cart, then leaving, then coming back etc.... If you're going to try something, this calls enormous attention to you. Especially if you're guilty of #1. If you walk all the way through the store to the back, and haven't even paused to look at anything, and now you're staring at $100 worth of merchandise, and then you walk away and come back, you will be watched. Even people who can't decide if they're going to buy something typically don't do this - they talk to an associate.
* Asking lot's of inane questions culminating in asking an associate to "look in the back" for something. We know you just want us to leave. The first thing we're going to do is radio security. We have cameras, metal detectors, dozens of employees and the police on speed dial, so just relax Danny Ocean, your charms are for naught.
* Being any race other than white and being younger than 30, or looking poor. Is it really surprising that corporations breed bigotry and evil? I quit my LP job because I was so disgusted by the blatant racism of the cashiers. I was notified EVERY time people of color came in to the (shoe) store. However, the fact remains that if there are 2 or three of you and you're young, or you're black in a predominately white area, you're also going to be watched. Yes that is shitty.
If there are a bunch of you and you split up when you walk in, you're REALLY going to be watched. If you look homeless, you're going to be watched, and possibly asked to leave. Again, yes that is shitty, but it is also reality.
* Having a book bag, a big purse, a stroller with a lot of blankets in it or anything else that looks like it could be used to conceal merch. Sorry, your Versace bag, just looks like a get away car to the finely trained eyes of your local stuff mart's rent-a-cop. Your hemp earth friendly shopping bag - also just a red flag. Remember though, if you don't do anything wrong you just have to deal with mild harassment. If you want to save the earth - use a hand cart and put your stuff in your bag at checkout, unless you want the Huckabees G-Men on your trail.

i learned what has been the maximum amount of gold found in history.
Tumblr media
Undoubtedly, there is nothing that better represents wealth than gold, especially when we talk about a 27-kilo nugget.
Kevin Hillier, a guy from Australia, had a big stroke of luck. When he found a piece of solid gold in its pure state weighing just over 50 pounds, he found it using a rudimentary metal detector.
Tumblr media
The piece sold for close to a million dollars and is currently on display in Las Vegas, specifically at the Golden Nuggets casino.
Tumblr media
Its value is estimated to have increased, now they estimate it is worth around 40 million dollars.

Vriska: Thinking a8out 8ank ro88eries in the 30s makes me soooooooo angry. Those days you could just pull out some guns with your friends and get aw8y scot free. Now you have to deal with security cameras and metal detectors and they don’t even have big vaults full of gold like they used to. Technology ruined the 8ank ro88ing industry

A 2,000-Year-old Iron Age Gold Treasure Found in Wales
Gold coins dating back more than 2,000 years have been found by metal detectorists in Wales, making them the first hoard of Iron Age gold coins to have been discovered in the country.
The 15 coins, which have been declared treasure, are known as staters. They were found the Welsh island of Anglesey, off the northwest coast of the country’s mainland.
Struck between 60 BC and 20 BC, the coins belonged to the Corieltavi tribe, who at the time inhabited the geographical area that is now England’s East Midlands, according to a National Museum Wales press release.
The precious metals were unearthed by three metal detectorists in a field between July 2021 and March 2022.
Lloyd Roberts, who said he has been a metal detectorist for more than 14 years, found the first coin.
“Finding a gold stater was always number one on my wish list,” he said in the release, adding: “That one coin alone would have made my year, but I went on to find another on my next signal.”
Tumblr media
Roberts said that his friend, Peter Cockton, found the next three. They then contacted the Portable Antiquities Scheme, an organization which records such historical and archaeological finds.
Tim Watson, who said he only began metal detecting following encouragement from his father during lockdown, found the sixth.
“I rushed home to show my wife and we were both in awe of this coin, which was like nothing else I had found, immaculately preserved with such unusual stylised images,” Watson said in the release.
Watson said his enthusiasm led him to upgrade his metal detector and he found the remaining nine coins in the following weeks.
‘Rich archaeological landscape’
The gold coins’ elaborate design derives from those of Philip II, who ruled the ancient kingdom of Macedonia from 359 BC to 336 BC. The heads side of the coins shows the mythological deity Apollo’s wreath and hair, while the tails side shows a triangular-headed horse surrounded by symbols.
The coins were likely not used for everyday transactions, except potentially for some high-value purchases, according to the release. Instead, the staters are thought to have been used as gifts between the elites to secure alliances or show loyalty.
Tumblr media
Another option is that the Corieltavi tribe used them to form part of an exchange for copper, which there were sources of in various parts of the island.
The staters could also have been used as “offerings to the gods” to fulfill a vow, according to National Museum Wales. Other archaeological finds from Anglesey, as well as Roman sources referring to the island that feature pagan priests, suggest the area was an important religious center at the time.
Gwynedd Archaeological Trust visited the site in September 2021 to see if there were any clues as to why the coins were buried there.
“This hoard is a fantastic example of the rich archaeological landscape that exists in North-West Wales,” said Sean Derby, Historic Environment Record archaeologist at Gwynedd Archaeological Trust. “While the immediate vicinity of the find did not yield any clues as to the find’s origin, the findspot lies in an area of known prehistoric and early Roman activity and helps increase our understanding of this region.”
Welsh museum Oriel Môn is looking to acquire the coins and put them on public display.

I'm going to use Patches as a metal detector. Take him for a romantic walk ok the beach and when he starts screaming every few feet you know there's buried pirate treasure nearby.
How much gold do you think there is just buried around? Where do you live, anon? 👀
That might not be very profitable in the long run.

I've been mulling over how to give mermaids guns. Underwater combat is three dimensional and the water pressure around you is different from air pressure. There are modern guns that people claim can be fired under water, and with the supernatural elements of the setting i can very much invent a reason for why these guns are fine in water. The one thing im troubled with is what guns would be practical, and how they would be used in combat. Do you guys have any ideas?
So, Glock liked to advertise that you could fire their handguns underwater. That's technically true, but it's more of a marketing thing than a practical option. The “real,” danger that they were discussing was if a barrel is partially obstructed by water. For example, if you need to use your handgun, and have been running around in the rain, or worse, if you've accidentally dropped your gun in the mud and retrieved it. They were saying was that the gun would still operate safely under those conditions. You could have rainwater in the barrel and still shoot someone without a catastrophic failure.
So, this a major problem for most guns? Well, no. Or at least, not normally. Back in the 80s, polymer frame handguns were new and not widely understood. The Glock was characterized as a, “plastic gun.” You can even see this in contemporary media portraying the Glock as being able to pass through metal detectors because, “it's plastic.” (In reality, over 80% of the weight of an unloaded Glock 17 is steel.)
Now, the firearms market (and this applies to civilian, military, and law enforcement purchasers) tends to be extremely technologically conservative. Reliability is paramount, and any design innovation that could be perceived as a reliability issue (at least without offering something extremely enticing as a trade-off) will struggle to find buyers. While I've never heard an official statement on the subject, I suspect that Glock's advertising of the pistol's durability had more to with overcoming it's reputation as, “a plastic gun.” Even with that campaign, it still took them 15-20 years, with wide-scale law enforcement and military contracts, to fully shake that reputation.
The problem with firing a gun underwater isn't that it won't work; it's that the bullet's not going to go very far. Usually less than 2 meters. Even CAV-X rounds, which are designed to operate underwater tend to have an effective range of around 60m. Water creates an immense amount of friction on the bullet, and unless you're basically using the gun as a melee weapon (or using some very cutting edge rounds), the projectile isn't going to reach its target.
So, what are the options?
I don't know where you're going with Mermaids, but if you're digging into Atlantis myth, then there's always orichalcum, the mythical mountain gold from which the island derived its wealth. Often times orichalcum is described as possessing magical properties. (As far as I can remember, it was just a mundane, if rare, ore in Plato's original description. It's elevation to a magical material came later. So there's no consistency on what this could allow. But, magically hydrophobic bullets that have an orichalcum tip, are not any more fantastical than mermaids.)
Of course, if you're running with, Atlantis, Lemuria, or any other lost continent myth, then already have a justification for technology that is literally thousands of years more advanced than what you'll find on the surface. So, some kind of high energy, light based, weapon wouldn't be off the table. You might even be able to use something like a focused sonic shock gun, to use the water density itself to remotely deliver a kinetic impact on the target.
As for how you would use guns in a three dimensional space, you'd need to remember that up and down exist. Some concepts like cover and concealment would remain unaltered. But, engagements in open water could be extremely dangerous, as there may not be anything to protect you for, literally, miles in any direction. Once you get past that point, it starts to spiral out into full world building. Asking questions like what does warfare look like, when the most direct route between two points may be a vast void of nothingness, with no place to hide? Conversely, if they tend to stick close to the sea bed, then it's not going to be that different from conventional warfare, except for the part where they can freely move up and down to make use of available terrain and structures with combat, potentially, taking place across any surface.
There's a lot of potential, but most of it will be in creating a new world, and deciding the kinds of characters which inhabit it.

A silver pepper pot in anthropomorphic form. Roman Britain, buried in the 5th century AD, from Hoxne, Suffolk.
The pepper pot was found in 1992 by a farmer who was using his metal detector to search for a lost hammer. He found his hammer – it is now in the British Museum – but also a hoard of over 15,000 gold and silver coins, gold jewellery and numerous small items of silver tableware. The coins in the hoard establish that its burial took place some time after AD 407/8. Only a very wealthy family could have owned such treasures. We do not know the identity of the person who buried it but several objects are inscribed with the name Aurelius Ursicinus.
The pepper pot is in the shape of a wealthy well-fed woman wearing late Roman fashions. She wears a sleeved undergarment with tight gilded cuffs at the wrists, and a wide-sleeved over tunic with stripes of gilded and engraved decoration over the shoulders representing appliqued bands of embroidered or patterned textile (clavi).
Her golden (gilded) hair is done up in an intricate style that was often represented in late Roman art: the hair is parted in the middle, with rolls at the sides. The back hair is worked into a flat series of twisted locks at the neck that are drawn up over the back of the head, turned under at the front, and held in place with hairpins. Three knobs at the front and another at the crown of the head represent the ungilded hairpins.
Almond-shaped earrings and a necklace of large beads are depicted in relief and gilded, and there is additional gilding on the face, covering not only the eyes but the entire eye sockets, and the mouth, so as the flames from oil lamps flickered, the face would have seemed to come alive.
She holds a gilded scroll in her left hand, to which she points with the index finger of her right hand, probably to symbolise her learning and authority. We do not know if the figure represents a particular woman. ... It's ineffable.
Pepper was just one expensive luxury traded across the Indian Ocean in ancient times, as it did not grow in Britain or any other part of the Roman Empire. It was grown in India and to get to Suffolk, the pepper was transported by sea, river and over land.

🔥 pink floyd fanfiction
i have a lot of thoughts about pf fanfics so uhh sorry if this gets long and rant-y im just very opinionated #peaceandlove
idk if it's unpopular but a good chunk of the ones in ao3 are umm... not exactly the level of writing im used to compared to some my other fandoms. to put it nicely. (mainly talking about the slash fics) there are okay ones, but the best fic i read in ao3 was essentially a gen fic.. so... Yeah. anyway i've read a lot of good ones in livejournal but trying to navigate that site was like using a metal detector to find treasure and it's either i get a gold coin or some random piece of metal
also in the ao3 sphere i think that we need more fics about the guys being in messy unlabeled situationships rather than anything about them being loving boyfriends to each other (exceptions may apply in moderation). i don't think these guys have the emotional intelligence to say "i love you" to each other in a way that feels like they're in a normal romantic relationship do you get what i'm saying?
anyway that's all what i've thought of for now thank u for sending me this ask 🫶
