                                          ☽ ☾
You danced around the house as you cleaned, Jack’s voice blaring in the background as you listened to State Fair, you humming along to the tune. The damp towel you used to wipe down every surface sliding across with the beat, you shaking your hips as you groove.
You swore your man’s voice was butter. Hell, you had gotten off to it plenty of times.
And today would be no exception.
Your phone rang, pausing your music as Jack’s name was announced through the house’s speakers. You abandoned your washcloth and rushed over to the phone, swiping right to see your boyfriend’s face pop up on the screen.
“Hey Mamas.”
“Hey stink, how’s it going?”
“Going alright, I miss you.”
“I miss you more. But we only have a few days until you’re back from tour.” You announced, swiftly picking up your phone as you moved to your couch, propping your phone up on the table.
As you and Jack talked about your days apart, you couldn’t help but notice Jack’s spaced out look, as if he was in his own thought.
"What's wrong babe?" You spoke, looking at Jack with curious eyes. He let out a chuckle, shaking his head slightly.
"You know me so well."
"Well, of course I do, you're my boyfriend if I'm not mistaken. Unless... are you having a secret affair with Urban!?" At that comment Jack burst out laughing, you keeping your poker face to hold the joke.
"No babe, I am not having a secret love affair with Urban. Although, I'll suck that man's dick in a heartbeat if asked to." You looked at him in silence at his announcement, practically stunned.
"Anyway, I left you something under our bed. I want you to go into our bedroom and open it for me." He looked at you with a gleam in his eyes, you taking notice of the ocean blue of his eyes thinning to a small ring. You took him up on his orders, grabbing your phone as you moved to your shared bedroom. You looked underneath the bed, and lo and behold, a box with your name on it in cursive.
You propped your phone up once more on the nightstand, settling down on the side of your bed as you opened the box. You pulled out a satin bag with a drawstring, looking at Jack with a raised eyebrow.
"Well, go on, open it."
And you did, to which you found the most oddest thing Jack could have given you.
It was a dildo.
“Did you buy me a fucking dildo?”
“Not just any dildo. Look at it.”
And upon closer examination, you realized that it indeed, was not just any old dildo.
It was an exact mold of Jack’s dick.
“Jack, how the fuck…”
“I wanted you to have a piece of me while I’m on tour. So you can feel the real thing when I’m gone.”
“Jack, this isn’t the real thing.”
“Y/N, you get what I’m trying to say. The point is, I wanted you to have something to hold you over until I got home.” You examined the toy some more, noticing the veins and attention to detail that the dildo possessed.
“How the hell did you get this done?”
“Let’s just say it took some pride and a confidence boost from Urban to get my dick molded. Do you like it?”
“I- I don’t know what to say.”
“How about we test it out, hmm?” You raised your eyebrow at him, watching as his once ocean blue eyes faded into a ring of lust.
“I want you to go to our bedroom, and strip for me.” He commanded, you immediately following his orders. You could hear him shuffling on the other end, settling in the hotel bed with his cock between his hands. You looked at him and salivated, pussy throbbing with the view.
Fuck you wished he was here right now.
“Jack…” You moaned out, running your fingers up your thighs.
“Mm, baby, I want you to touch yourself. Rub that clit for me pretty girl.” He announced, pulling a moan from you as you followed his instructions.
“Oo, look at how wet you are baby. Fuck.” He moaned out, fisting his cock in his hand.
“Jack…”
“That’s not my name baby. What’s my name?”
“Daddy…”
“Good girl. What do you need pretty girl?”
“Can I use my fingers? Please daddy, I wanna be full.”
“Mm, go ahead mamas. Finger yourself. And let me see. I wanna see your fingers dripping from your cunt.” You practically groaned at his words, slipping your fingers inside of you. You heard Jack moan from the phone, watching as he stroked himself, beads of precum on his tip.
“Daddy, I wanna lick your cum off you, I wanna taste you so bad.”
“Mm, I know you want to pretty girl. But how about you taste yourself for me, can you do that for daddy?” You nodded your head, withdrawing your fingers with a gasp as you licked your fingers clean.
“How do you taste mamas?”
“So good. S'good."
"I know you do. I want you to prop me up, baby. Prop me up on that box that my dick came in and give me a good view as you shove that dildo inside of you. You understand?” You nodded your head, moving to prop him up at a good angle of your damp pussy. You leaned back against the headboard, grabbing the mold as you ran it up and down your slit. You let out one of the loudest moans you’ve ever let out alone, the dildo feeling exactly like Jack.
“Daddy, you feel so good.” You speak, feeling veins along the underside of the dildo.
“Fuck baby, I miss you. I miss you so much, I want your tight little pussy around me so bad.” Jack moaned out, forcing you to shudder.
“Daddy please…”
“Stuff yourself full, go ahead pretty girl. Stuff yourself full of my cock. Fuck yourself for me.”
And you did exactly that, shoving the dildo inside of you, adjusting for a moment before shoving it in and out at a rapid pace.
“Fuck baby, you look so good. How do I feel princess? Do I feel good inside you? Does that dildo do it as good as I do?”
“No daddy, but it feels so good, so so good.” You grunted, picking up the speed.
“Baby, there should be a vibrating setting, I want you to turn it on for me.” You searched for the button, finding it at the bottom of the toy. You turned it on, the vibrations sending shockwaves inside your soaked cunt.
“Ohh fuck, daddy. Daddy…”
“Mhmm, keep going, baby girl. Fuck yourself silly.” You heard Jack say at a distance, your mind floating off into an autopilot subspace. All you knew was that the dildo Jack made for you was hitting all the right places, making you miss him even more.
But for now, this was doing the perfect job.
“Look at you.. all fucked out. Cock drunk on this little dildo I made for you. You wish that was me don’t you, you wish that was me fucking you that good. Touching and squeezing on those beautiful tits. Rub your tits for me baby. Get your fingers nice and wet and play with your nipples.” You followed Jack’s orders subconsciously, crying out at the added stimulation. You heard Jack grunt, spitting in his hand as he quickened the pace on his dick.
“Fuck baby, I’m gonna cum. I want us to come together.”
“Yes daddy. M'gonna cum.”
“Cum for me mamas. Cum all over that dick.”
You squirted all over the shaft, staining your hand and your sheets. The moan you let out was loud, shaking you to your core as you rode out your orgasm.
“That’s right ma, ride it out. Ride that shit all the way out, fuck.”
“Cum daddy, please cum. I wanna see you cum.”
Jack came with a grunt, seed splattering all over his hand and his phone.
“Holy fuck baby.” He gasped, wiping his hands on his thighs. You shuddered at the action, legs going slack as you came down from your high.
“Jack..”
“Yes, mamas?”
“I need you to come home.”
“Soon baby girl. Soon, I promise.”

Finally someone who writes African American readers! I’ve been looking all over! Anyways, can you write a story about Levi and his African American s/o having kids and they’re all just dancing to popular urban songs? Its basically just a little bonding time.
foot note: pay no mind to the fact that this literally just never got published i’m so sorry 😭
——————————————————————————
Tumblr media
A smile graced your face as you soaked in the scenario that’s unfolding, it felt surreal. Levi Ackerman, humanity's strongest soldier, and his loving (Y/N) found themselves blessed with a lively bunch of children. As they watched their little ones grow, they realized the profound joy that music brought their family.
The sun was shining, the faint buzzing sound of insects as well as the wind brushing against the grass surrounded the Ackerman family as they decided to have a special bonding session in the backyard. They put on their favorite R&B songs and danced to the rhythm with pure delight. The Kids, Madie, Genesis, Tremaine and Miracle giggled and twirled around, trying to imitate their parents' moves while Levi and his partner showcased their natural dancing skills. Older songs playing the likes of Whitney Houston, Earth Wind & Fire, Ja Rule, and Madie’s personal favorite: Michael Jackson
“Madie, what’s your stage name?”
“Madie Jackson!”
the exclamation made both parents laugh and hugged their daughter as tight as they possibly could,
“You’d be the best Madie Jackson ever!”
Levi, known for his stoic demeanor, let loose and embraced the happiness that radiated from his family. His partner, whose contagious laughter filled the air, led the way with energetic dance routines. They encouraged each child to express themselves through dance, fostering an environment of creativity and freedom.
The eldest child, a curly-haired girl named Genesis showed off her agility and grace with fluid dance moves, reminiscent of a seasoned performer. Next in line was Tremaine, a mischievous young boy who wasn't afraid to break out into spontaneous breakdance moves that left the family in awe and finally the twins, Madie and Miracle, added a touch of synchronized elegance to their performance, never missing a beat.
As the music continued to play, the baby of the Ackerman family, Levi Jr., joined in with his adorable little steps and contagious laughter. Every family member swayed and grooved, revealing the true power of love and unity.
Neighbors passing by couldn't help but stop and watch as this remarkable family exuded happiness and harmony. Some even joined in, clapping their hands and bopping to the beat, turning the backyard into a joyful dance party.
The day unfolded like a magical symphony from the morning starting with grits and eggs, to the midday being cleaning time to the Ackerman family dancing freely to the rhythm of their hearts. Each movement became a reflection of their love for one another, letting no outside or otherworldly interference stop their flow.
In that moment, Levi Ackerman, the hardened soldier, and his special (Y/N), were more than just parents. They were the architects of happiness and togetherness, creating cherished memories that would last a lifetime.
And so, under the warm sunshine and with the melody of slow, rugged and beautifully crafted R&B songs carrying them on, the Ackerman family continued to dance, bonding through rhythm and expression, celebrating the love that bound them forever and always.

Elena practically flew forwards, her hand only just managing to stop the rest of her from slamming into the dashboard. She blinked once and slowly looked to her right.
“Are you joking?” she asked monotonously. “What the fuck was that?!”
“Don’t blame me, blame the fucking pigeon on the road!” John pointed ahead of him, one hand gripping onto the steering wheel. Elena followed his pointed finger and sighed.
“Bon…” she began. “That’s a fucking badger.”
“Huh?” He squinted, struggling to see a thing through the persistent sun. “Gah!” he grunted, waving his hand relatively in the same direction of the sun as he started the car up again, continuing their drive. “El, will you pass me my sunnies from my bag?”
Elena looked at John as if he was speaking an unfounded language. “You’re such a diva now,” she huffed, but smirked to let him know she wasn’t serious. Though she was certain he knew her enough to know she could never be snarky to him.
With an exaggerated sigh, she turned and stretched over in between the two car seats, reaching for John’s bag. She pulled it over to her and got to unzipping it, just as he made quite a sharp turn, causing her to fall sideways into him.
“My God, get your arse out of my face.”
“Stop making stupid driving decisions, then!”
“Why don’t you bloody drive? You’re old enough now.”
“I’ll end up killing someone, mate.” Elena rummaged through his bag, looking for his sunglasses. She snorted when she came across handfuls upon handfuls of spare drumsticks. “You got enough sticks in here, Bon-Bon?” she asked rhetorically, finally finding his sunglasses and retrieving them.
“Here y’are,” she plopped back down into the passenger seat, holding the shades out for John.
“Cheers,” he thanked her, clumsily putting them on his face with one hand, poking his eye in the process. “We’re almost there, by the way.”
Elena nodded, taking in the more urban character of their surroundings. It was a contrast to where she and John had grown up and spent most of their time. Sure, they weren’t all the way out in the countryside, but everything was within walking distance from each other. The closer into Birmingham you got, the more bus stops and taxi ports came into view, and the more reclusive passers-by seemed to be.
John had learned the ins and outs of Birmingham for the most part, ever since he started to pursue drumming full time and had to make these journeys in and out of the city. His recent endeavour, a band eccentrically named Crawling King Snakes, had inspired new confidence in him. The colourful landscape of musicians he had come across had never been more vibrant than the one he found himself in the middle of now. More than anything, hope was peeking over the horizon.
“So, what should I expect from your new bandmates?” Elena asked, resting her legs on the dashboard and tracing her finger across the grooves on her brown corduroy trousers.
“Nothing too crazy. Expect a lot of Welsh from Dave. Paul’s quiet… Dunno, they’re just chilled out guys.” He shrugged.
“Not really giving too much away, are you?”
“They’re hard to describe, to be honest with you. You just have to meet them,” John chuckled.
Elena left it at that and sat back, enjoying the rest of the car ride. The radio had treated them nicely that day, feeding them with the slick tunes of Little Richard and The Drifters, to Elvis and The Everly Brothers. All music the two friends enjoyed throughout the years. Elena had taken a recent interest in The Rolling Stones, a sharp turn from what she was used to listening to. Growing up, she found her place in the Blues, and Soul. She could listen to the likes of Ella Fitzgerald and Nat King Cole for hours and never tire of their silky vocals; the pure emotion and heart that went into each stave and syllable rang deep within her, and she felt every word like kitten kisses upon her ears.
Since John decided to become a full-time drummer, she’d been exposed to a wider variety of music that seeped from the essence of da blues to form a complete musical revolution that had quickly grown on her. The first time she heard the Stones was during her late night shift at work. Minimal pay for a 17-year-old, but the pub’s great company and tunes cancelled out the meesely wage. Satisfaction stuck with her all night. I can’t get no…neh neh neh nene neh neh… All. Night.
The flood gates were swung open once she stepped foot into the record shop in search of more Stones. That’s when she first came across Bay City Rollers, Cream, The Yardbirds… it was a whole different world and Elena hoped with her entire being that there would be more of it to come—that it wasn’t a mere diversion in the chaotic lineage of music evolution.
Bag over his shoulder, John led Elena inside the building, where Crawling King Snakes had booked out a small space for a couple of hours in exchange for £100. Dave was somewhat peeved that they had to spend that much on a couple of hours, but was easily convinced nonetheless.
“Ayy, there he is!” Paul exclaimed, raising his arms in the air as he spotted John at the door with his female companion.
“Ayy, y’alright, mate?” John greeted him with a manly hug, slapping each other’s backs in the process. It amused Elena greatly when she witnessed John in the presence of other guys; his entire demeanour toughened and he gave the facade of a sharp-tongued lad’s lad. Yes, he had it in him. But the correlation between that and his surroundings was too coincidental for it not to be causational.
The room really was small for a jamming session. Four yellow strip lights hung above, and the carpet was worn and colourless, as though waiting to be quenched by the kaleidoscopic symphonies of talented musicians.
“Dave, get your arse over ‘ere,” Paul waved his hand over to the other male in the room, long-haired and lost in thought with a blue bass guitar slung over his shoulder.
“El,” John began, slinging his arm around Elena and bringing her beside him. “This is Paul Martinez and Dave Edmunds—guitar and bass. They’re mental. Beware.”
Elena laughed and shook her head, holding out her hand to greet the two men politely. They reciprocated the greeting with friendly smiles, one accompanied by a cigarette hanging from his lips.
“This is Elena. She’s my best friend, partner in crime, and primary critic. If anyone knows what sounds good, it’s this girl, here,” he proudly introduced with a squeeze of her shoulders against him.
“Good to meet you,” Paul said through the muffle of his cigarette.
“Right, El, I need to set up properly, you’re alright just hanging about, yeah?” John checked, putting his bag down on a nearby chair.
“Mhm,” Elena nodded with a smile. “I’ll be here.” She watched as John made his way over to the drum riser to get to work on tightening the drum skins and double checking placements.
With her arms folded comfortably, she took a small step backwards, only to collide with something, or someone, coming through the door behind her. She turned her head and moved out of the way immediately. “Oh, sorry…” she instinctively apologised before looking up at the person in question.
“Nah, yer alright, luv, I was just gunna skim past you.”
Her chestnut eyes fell in line with two striking orbs of blue—expressive and welcoming. He had thick, curly hair that traced the fine line of dirty blonde. It looked like it could easily switch up in the glare of the sun, with how delicate it seemed. It fell into strong sideburns that stopped just short of his chin, framing a dimpled grin that dismissed her apology.
“Ah, Bobby!” Paul called in the midst of lighting a cigarette. The blonde grunted and looked over at him with a dissatisfied glare.
“Will you stop calling me that?”
“Bobby Bobby Bobby Bobbehhhh,” John joined in, in a crouched position by one of the snares. With a boisterous laugh, he popped his head up, gesturing a drumstick at Elena. “Elena, Robert, Robert, Elena.”
Robert’s brows lifted in realisation, a smile once again taking over his features as he turned back to Elena with his hand held out. “Ah, you’re the one he’s been talkin’ about, then.” Clasping his hand in hers, he leaned in to give her a welcoming peck on the cheek, as he did with all the women he came across.
“Great to know he’s been talking about me,” Elena responded loud enough for the drummer to hear, earning a distracted middle finger from him in retaliation.
“Oh, he’s mentioned you a fair bit, yeah,” Robert nodded.
“That’s disconcerting…”
“No, all good things, luv, don’t worry.” Robert waved his hand in dismissal.
They naturally drifted further into the room as everyone hooked themselves up to the few amps they had lying around. Robert was itching to get started. He’d been looking for other strong musicians with a similar zest for life to jive with for a while, and hoped that Crawling King Snakes could at the very least lead to something magnificent. It made him all the more nervous to test out new material, though, now that he had an audience. Not just any audience, either. The presence of John’s female companion, who Robert wasn’t blind enough to recognise as physically stunning.
Even though this was simply an opportunity to jam and test out different sounds, he knew he had to get it right. Whatever it was. Early on, he learned that leaving a not-so-impactful impression on the ladies was the last thing anyone should do when performing. It would be a notch on his ego, an ego he was subconsciously trying to craft around the slightly sensitive, yet lively, 18-year-old boy that he was.
Little did he know he had already made a lasting impression, simply by the way he greeted Elena at the door. There was something extremely European about his way of saying ‘hello,’ in a sense that it held the weight of a respectful, gallant gentleman. To Elena, that was extremely comforting and unique; exactly the kind of person she’d enjoy surrounding herself with.
The way he chose to dress himself… wow. She’d very rarely seen men adorn their bodies with such delicate material, bohemian and Eastern-inspired all at once. If there was one thing Robert was, it was remarkable, exceptional… abnormal—everything the world was missing but didn’t know it needed. And that was just by the way he dressed.
It was fair to say Elena’s interest in this eccentric boy was piqued.
Incidentally, the feeling was mutual. Robert was instantly caught up in the way her deep brown hair fell in natural waves down her back, tamed, yet allowed to sway freely with every movement she made. And her eyes, fuck, they were so big and captivating. He’d already picked up on her accent, always one to take note of such things. Alluring, unapologetically informal. So care-free. He only hoped that his first impressions of her were accurate. It would be a shame to see something so beautiful turn out to be the complete opposite.
“Bonzo’s a great drummer, isn’t he?”
Elena, leaning against the wall with her hands behind her back, cocked her head in Robert’s direction. “Bonzo?”
“John.” He nodded his head towards him.
“He’s a fantastic drummer. Always thought that of him.” Elena’s voice was soft as she admired him from afar.
“How long have you two been together?”
The brunette had to steal a minute to confirm she had heard correctly. She had paused amid her smile in John’s direction. “Who?” she checked, glancing at Robert.
“You and John.”
“Oh God, no,” she was quick to shake her head, face falling flat. “No, no…”
Robert’s light smile fell slightly, and a soft shade of pink infiltrated his cheeks. “No?”
“Yeah, no.”
“No, what?”
“We aren’t together,” she insisted with a gesturing finger between herself and her best friend. “Hasn’t he told you he’s married?”
Robert’s eyebrows scrunched up, sending a curious glance over at John. “It’s never come up in conversation, I guess.”
“It was recent, to be fair.” Elena watched Robert’s analytical observation. “He’s got a one-month old son, as well.”
“Well, shit,” Robert breathed, running a hand over his face. “Sorry, I just assumed ‘cause of how close you two seem to be…” Behind the comfort of his hand, he scrunched up his face in embarrassment and shook his head. “Fuckin’ Bonzo…” he muttered. Crawling King Snakes hadn’t been together for longer than a couple of months, and none of the eight sessions they'd had thus far consisted of private-life talk. Each of them were too preoccupied with the music and forming a cohesive combination of personalities to delve into the lives of one another.
Elena’s swift dismissal may have translated as abrasive, and she became quickly aware of that as soon as Robert hid his face behind his hand, inaudibly scolding himself. She didn’t jump to reassure him, however. His sensitivity to the smallest misunderstanding was captivating. Rare. There was no need to maintain emphasis on something that clearly left him unwillingly flustered.
So, she changed the topic, focusing on the nickname Robert had used twice now.
“You call him Bonzo?” Elena smiled, not only at the name, but the way it sounded on a Black Country tongue.
“Yeah, well,” Robert chuckled, showing an off-centre slant in his smile that emphasised the dimple on his right cheek. “He was insistent on calling me Bobby, so I thought I’d call him something that would piss him off even more, but…” He shook his head, watching his bandmate test out each drum to perfection. “He actually didn’t mind it, so it’s stuck.”
“Bonzo…” Elena tested the name in her own mouth, the cadence different in her Lancashire drawl. “It fits him, dunnit?” She said through a grin. “I’ve always called him Bon-Bon.”
“Like the sweet?” Robert looked down at her, resting his hand on the wall beside her head casually, the small blip in their conversation fading into obscurity.
She nodded, still looking at John. “Mhm. It was actually an accident,” she pointed out, glancing at Robert. “I guess I struggled to say ‘Bonham’ when I was 4.”
“Blimey, you’ve known him for that long?”
Elena turned her head to him fully, her mouth dropping open a bit. “Alright, calm down, how old do you think I am?”
“I-I didn’t mean it as in ‘you’re old’!” Robert laughed. “You can’t be much older than us!”
“I’m actually younger than John by a year, so…”
“Well, I’m younger than him by a few months.”
“So, there you go, I’m not old.”
“Listen, luv, I was simply shocked by how long you’ve known him,” Robert incessantly defended himself, much to Elena’s amusement. She smiled at him, looking back at John.
“Nah, I bloody wish I was older.”
“And why’s that?”
“Can’t drink yet, can I?” She gave Robert a pointed look.
“That’s right, you can’t.” He feigned distress, letting out an exaggerated sigh. “The struggles of being 17 in England.”
“Oh, I know, it’s torture,” she played along, resting her head back against the wall.
He smirked. “So, you’re a drinker, then, eh?”
“Well…” she shrugged, “A bit, yeah. I work in a pub as a waitress, so sometimes I can have half a pint at the end of the shift if there aren’t that many people in. Which hardly ever happens.” She rolled her eyes.
“I’ve only recently turned 18, so I’m still trying to get used to buying alcohol in the shops without worrying about being caught,” Robert chided. “What pub d’you work in?”
“The George Inn. It’s like slam in between here and up in Walsall.”
“I see…” Robert nodded, chewing his lip in thought.
“That being said, I want to move a bit closer to here, eventually. Not entirely in the city centre, though, I like the countryside a bit too much.”
Robert just smiled as she spoke. He took in every piece of information, enjoying the way she’d speak in her hometown slang every now and then. She definitely spoke a lot, but Robert didn’t mind. He admired it.
“Like, closer to the city, but not completely in the city… d’ya get what I mean?” She looked up at Robert, completely unashamed of her rambling.
“I get what you mean, luv,” he reassured.
“I know this might be weird, but I just love being surrounded by nature. It’s how I grew up—how both of us grew up,” she gestured between herself and John, who was almost done. “And I have a thing for plants. Being in the city doesn’t really reward you with that stuff, does it?”
Elena watched as Robert’s smile widened, seemingly proud of himself. She raised an eyebrow. “What’s that look for?”
“You have a thing for plants?” he asked.
“Alright, I know it’s a bit… nerdy, or whatever, but yeah, I do. I like the smell of them when you’ve just watered them, and the reflections they make when the sun hits them in the right spot. They brighten up a room. There’s just something… comforting about them.”
“You really don’t need to defend yourself, Elena.” She liked the way he said her name. It was almost like he was testing it out for the first time. “I’m a bit like that with nature. My parents used to take me over to Wales every year on holiday, and we’d stay right in the heart of nature. Right on the coast. It was great.” He folded his arms, glancing over at John. “Aren’t you bloody done, yet?”
“You’re the one yappin’ on over there ‘bout God knows what, don’t have a chomp at Bonz!” Dave scolded, punctuated with a funky run of notes from his bass.
“Oh, shit,” Robert snorted, his face flushing where his sideburns faded out into a light beard. “Guess that’s me cue,” he said to Elena, a small boost of confidence overtaking him in the dawn of stepping in front of a band. “Oh, by the way, my last name is Plant. And I’ve been known to brighten up any room,” he teased with a boyish wink.
Elena couldn’t help but grin, as much as she tried to resist looking silly, as she watched him walk up to the mic stand.
If Robert didn’t feel some kind of pressure before, he certainly did now. He’d just bigged himself up in the most pretentious way possible, in his mind, by using his name. His bloody name! If he could, he would have slapped himself, right in the face. As he stood there, right in between his bandmates and the inquisitive gaze of Elena, he felt it brewing in the pit of his stomach. A certain drive. A metaphorical shove to let go. To show off. To submerge himself in the euphoria he called music. To do everything he’d admired his idols for for so long now.
In this moment, he finally caught the essence by a fleeting blink of an eye, and he grasped it as firmly as he did the microphone, determined to never let it go.
Unsure of what she was expecting from the seemingly delicate, unruly-haired, sapphire-eyed young man in front of her, Elena sat on the edge of her seat as Robert exorcised such visceral sounds from his mouth. Unlike anything she’d ever heard. She watched as he got completely lost in the rhythm, shaking his curls around in time with each riff.
The perfect combination of what she’d grown up on and what she’d recently ventured into.
It left her speechless; a big deal for someone like Elena, who rarely managed to keep her mouth shut. She had to distract herself, keep herself from acting like a babbling idiot before Robert even thought about asking her for feedback. So, whilst Robert helped John with some wires at the end of their session, Elena struck up a conversation with Paul, eager to know about his influences. But as much as she tried to focus on what Paul was saying, her eyes betrayed her mind, and made brief but definite glances at the singer on the drum-riser.
Robert bit onto his tongue as he concentrated on winding up one of the wires that had previously been connected to his microphone. John was busy complaining about how they had to make sure they left the room the way they found it, despite the state they found it in. They’d be blamed for it either way. Young, aspiring musicians were blamed for everything these days.
He made sure to nod along, but stayed entirely fascinated by Elena, making hidden glances over at her as she chatted with Paul. Her hair that struck him upon impact now became an accomplice to the rest of her; the two hours he’d been in her presence was enough for him to know he wanted to see more. He wanted to know her, learn from her.
“Uh, Bonz’,” he interrupted John’s rant. He took another moment to succumb to the temptation Elena unknowingly laid out for him, her own cheeks adorned with faint dimples when she laughed. Finally able to tear his eyes from her, he looked at John. “Is, uh…” He nodded his head in the relative direction of Elena. “Is Elena gunna be around a lot, d’you think?” He tried to make his inquisition as casual as possible, nonchalantly hanging the wire in his hands up on one of the hooks behind the drumset.
Whilst John Bonham enjoyed his off-peak ramblings, he wasn’t naive, and he most certainly wasn’t an idiot. This wasn’t the first time another guy had come up to him with a question about his childhood best friend, wondering if she was single, if they were a couple, or anything of that nature. It wasn’t a common occurrence, but it happened enough for him to recognise that tone and look in the eye of any man who asked about a woman with an underlying interest in getting to know her.
He stood from his seat, stretching his back out with an exaggerated groan to cover up the smirk on his face. “If she’s not working, I should imagine she’ll be around us a lot,” he responded, watching intently at Robert’s reaction. But Robert knew he was being watched, and tilted his head in an attempt to cover his expressions with the curls atop his head. This’d be fuckin’ easier if my hair was long…
“You don’t have an issue with her bein’ around, do you?”
“No,” Robert answered immediately, lifting his head up to meet amused eyes. “Just… it was just a question,” he sighed, giving up as Elena appeared at the bottom of the drum-riser, smiling at John.
“Yep, almost done, El,” he responded to a silent question he knew she was about to ask. “What time you s’pposed to start your shift?”
“Five,” she answered, folding her arms and sending a comfortable smile over to Robert.
“What’d’ya think?” Robert asked, jumping down from the riser.
Elena’s smile widened, but her response was cut off before she could even begin.
“What do you mean, ‘what’d’ya think’?” John chuckled. “El loves anything I do, isn’t that right?”
“‘Ar Bon-Bon is clearly very modest,” Elena teased, sending John a wry grin before turning her attention back to Robert. She considered him for a second, the earlier elation settled in her chest for now, and she was able to respond with a coherent elegance. “Not bad, Plant.”
Robert answered with an equally elegant nod of appreciation.
“Right, all done, love,” John huffed, joining them. “Ready to go?” he asked Elena. She nodded with a hum of approval. “Same time next week, yeah?” John turned to Robert, offering a manly hug once again, which consisted of a half-hug and a slap on the back. Receiving confirmation, John fished out his cigarettes in preparation for the ride to Elena’s work.
Before leaving, Robert made sure to give Elena another gallant kiss on the cheek, letting her know it was nice to meet her. She responded in kind, giving his arm a small squeeze in the process.
And as he watched the dynamic duo leave, Robert found himself already restless for next week’s session, where he’d hopefully get to see Elena again.

German Trip Hop Playlist (YouTube)
Alright, folks, for the past couple Sundays I've been posting playlists comprised of German music from electronic genres that the country tends to be naturally associated with—trance and techno—but this week, to end this little Deutsch-centric foray I've been on, we're getting into some sweet cuts from a genre that Germany's not so typically known for: trip hop.
Now, maybe when you think of German music, you naturally assume some things. And probably because of Kraftwerk and krautrock and techno, you imagine stuff that sounds cold, mechanical, repetitious, and robotic. But this little playlist here, which really isn't even beginning to scratch the surface of Germany's trip hop landscape, should start to disabuse you of your very own wrongly held preconceived notions. All of these tracks here are a blend of smooth, blissful, and relaxing. Clearly and obviously, there’s far, far, far more to German music than sounding like an automaton, but maybe you never really thought about it all that much 🤷‍♂️.
So let's highlight some of these nuggets here, and start with a track that really seems to call back to trip hop's own Bristol, UK origins, when it was basically fusing Jamaican dub and hip hop in order to form sonic syrup in the late 80s and early 90s. The Frankfurt-based duo of Soul Patrol, who only ever released a pair of 12-inches, bring forth "Slow Groove," a sedative that served as their debut track when it appeared on a pair of compilations back in '95. This gem uses a sample that should sound *very* familiar to hip hop heads: Isaac Hayes' "Walk On By," a part of which was famously used in The Notorious B.I.G.'s "Warning," as well as another mid-90s trip hop tune, Belgian group Hooverphonic's "2 Wicky," which got a lot of burn on Pandora back when Pandora was still a big fucking deal. "Slow Groove" basically sounds like it was made by Portishead, but replacing Beth Gibbons on vocals is an American woman named Francesca Harper, who is actually now a world-renowned dancer. And it has a little over 43,000 plays across a few different uploads on YouTube.
Next up, from Berlin, we have a guy named Jiri.Ceiver, who in 1997 released a song called "Ycool" on a 10-inch single as well as his second and final album, Jig, Amble & Lisp, which were both put out on the legendary Frankfurt-based and Sven Väth co-owned Harthouse label. Harthouse had originally started out as a pioneering outlet for hard trance, trance, and techno in the early 90s, but by the latter part of that decade, and before they wound up closing their doors, they had expanded their palette with a bunch more electronic genres. And “Ycool,” a terrific piece of reconstructed trip hop-blues, serves as a sweet example of just how broad that expansion was getting. And it only has 169 plays!
And lastly, we have something beautifully dubby from another Berliner named Christian Kleine, whose 2000 tune, "Bitter Things," first exclusively appeared on a lovely double-disc compilation called Putting the Morr Back in Morrissey, which really had nothing to do with The Smiths' own frontman, other than the fact that a bunch of its songs had a reflective melancholy to them. However, despite "Bitter Things"' own title, this is a song that was really made to sync up with a sunrise. An organic, crunchy, and happy, boom-bappy bop, with cool, dubby effects employed all throughout. Over 36,000 plays across a few different YouTube uploads.
This playlist is ordered as chronologically as possible:
Nonplace Urban Field - "Universe" Jazz Con Bazz - "Wayz of Life" Knowtoryus - "The Revenge of the Bomberclad Joint (Kruder & Dorfmeister session, Part II)" Fon:Kin - "Montininja (Fauna Flash remix)" Hacienda - "Nightmare of Max" Soul Patrol - "Slow Groove (Soul Patrol original vocal)" Beanfield - "Charles (remix)" Jiri.Ceiver - "Ycool" Christian Kleine - "Bitter Things" Lali Puna - "Fast Forward (Flowchart Rmx)"
And this playlist is also on YouTube Music.
So with this start, we have ten personal German trip hop favorites of mine that appear on a handful of compilations that I've collected over the years. Totals at 53 minutes.
And next week we'll be staying in this chilly mode, but we'll be zooming out from Germany ⛄.
Enjoy!
More to come, eventually. Stay tuned!

Okay Indigo, hit me.... show me what you got.
Closing out his 20s with a little angsty emo alt-pop R&B electric rock, Namjoon presents Indigo. Independent. Indulgent. Ingenious.
Tumblr media
Though I was unfamiliar with the Korean individuals collabing with Namjoon on this record, I did take a "pre-listen" to some of their work before Indigo's release so I could be familiar with their style.
Of course I knew who Erykah Badu is. Though very talented and respected musically, she is not without her own controversies.
And I know Anderson .Paak. I am a huge fan of Silk Sonic, his Grammy winning duo with Bruno Mars who I am also a big fan of.
So these are just my opinions after listening and learning the lyrics. These are my interpretations of the vibe of the songs...
Yun. It is hard hitting first-out-the-gate and I can understand why Joon put this song first. It's a statement: Fuck you, imma do what I want.
Tumblr media
Still Life, definitely love the R&B groove, love Anderson's vocals and the improvisation: "Joon: Shit happens in life...Paak: it's gonna be what it's gonna be brothah, you just have to do your thang." "Y'all can't lock me in a frame. I'm still life." The clever wordplay. A "still life" is typically defined as a tableau of inanimate objects such as flowers, fruit and other objects, arranged and then painted or photographed and framed. A still life. A moment in time. But in this song, I am seeing it meant as I am still LIFE, as in still living...you can't put me in a frame because I am living and breathing. So my take is this song says "let's keep it moving, never stay still, live life and don't let them define you by one frame of an image or one point or moment in time."
Tumblr media
All Day, yay finally experiencing TABLO, great song, nice fast beat. TABLO's delivery reminds me of Eminem... personally, I am not a big fan of Eminem, but in this song, that type of vocal from TABLO works well. The beat will probably get this song added to my "walking playlist." WE GOT DYNAMITE IN OUR DNA! Might be my fave song off the album.
Tumblr media
Forg_tful, an acoustic, laid back vibe, especially with the whistling... sort of John Mayer-ish? Very folk music-y and right up in the middle of Sawol's music genre kool-aid. Makes me want to order a caramel latte with a touch of almond milk at an independently owned hipster coffee shop. And I don't even like almond milk.
Tumblr media
Closer, nice little bubbly intro segues to smooth urban R&B. Love Mahalia's vocals. So. Most of this song is sung in English. Paul Blanco has a few Korean words and that's it. The lyrics are very sensual. I find it conveniently uncontroversial that it is Mr. Blanco singing about 'when our lips lock' and 'making her body go diddy diddy bop'. The lyric: "but you run away like a fish"... that one sticks in my head because it is so visual! I saw a small fish get scared and scurry away! Great song.
Tumblr media
Change pt. 2, unexpected electric riffs. Interesting that this song is entirely in English. I wonder who he is singing about? Harsh! Lol! Since its in English, it might be about the western music industry–as we know, they have to be spoken to in their language or they "just don't get it". Or it might be about a past significant other who did him wrong. "Some day a great grief will come for you." (That Miss Karma, she's the biggest fuckin' bitch I know.) "That's all I can say to you." (mic drop).
Tumblr media
Lonely, I'm so fuckin lonely... super emo alt pop rocker. Joon made this song and these lyrics sound like some sort of weekly Top 40 groove-fest banger. The hook is an earworm in the making. "I'm fuckin' lonely....so fuckin' lonely." And the bridge is big and awesome. This song is a masterpiece of chart topping geniusness songwriting.
Tumblr media
Hectic, with all its bright notes and beat, the gist of the lyrics say 'I been working my ass off, nothing glamorous about it, and people still say the same shit. Why am I doing this? What am I chasing? If doing this THIS way is a pain, how can I do it different?
Tumblr media
Wild Flower... a big sonic, soaring, epic type song. Youjeen's big vocals and lyrics give me Katy Perry Firework vibes. The MV visuals help push the "big" to me. It's just a big song. Big Namjoon asking "what is this big life I have? what does it mean?" The visuals of him standing on top of the mountain and being able to see the entire world and it's a dawning day...not gonna lie, I did tear up. Seeing Joonie like this, expressing his lyrics visually in a music video touches my heart for him. The stage surrounded by Army... him standing and then laying in the field of purple flowers (also Army), it's very emotionally stirring. But I have something to tell Joon... as time goes by, one still searches for who they are and sometimes we never really understand who we are. All we can do is live our truths as authentically as possible.
Tumblr media
No. 2, what a nice closing song to wrap it up. Don't look back anymore. There's nothing to prove. You've done your best. No lookin' back, no. The album ends and I'm smiling.
Tumblr media
Like everyone else, my heart swells with pride. Over all, the lyricism is off the charts of course. Joonie is a wordsmith. Thank you Kim Namjoon/RM for putting your soul out there, sharing your emotions and thoughts with us in such a poetically lyrical way. Well done.
My disclaimers: I am not a music expert. These are just my personal opinions. But I do have impeccable taste in music. 💜

[TRANS] Album/Song Introduction - IU 5th Full Album ‘LILAC’
Tumblr media
Album Introduction
“Hello to a flower petal-like hello”
“I’m moving on to the next step without any doubt on my mind”
Having shown us a preview of her glamorous ‘greeting’ to the end of her 20s, IU is back with her 5th full-length album [LILAC] along with the scent of spring. Unlike the first album of her 20s, [Spring of a Twenty Year Old], which was full of her honest and fresh emotions, IU’s full-length album in 4 years [LILAC] captures her emotions which have matured over the years, through 10 tracks showing varied perspectives of her 20s thus far.
This time, IU participated again as a producer, composer and also wrote the full lyrics for the album and had new collaborations with various local and international top artistes, experimenting with new genres and releasing high quality songs, raising expectations for IU’s ongoing musical transformation as she enters her 30s.
Top music video production teams in Korea, VM Project (Celebrity, Flu), Flipevil (LILAC, Epilogue) and Sunny Visual (Coin) also participated for this album. The sensory videos each with unique styles, created a great synergy with IU’s music.
The lilac flower which is used as both the album title and title track, represents ‘first love’ and ‘memories of youth’. Here is a greeting from a glamorous yet slightly lonely IU, to show her gratitude to everyone who has read the first page of her 20s to the last page.
Song Introductions
01 라일락 (LILAC) [TITLE]
Lyrics By IU
Composed By Im Su Ho / Dr. JO / Woong Kim / N!ko
Arranged by Im Su Ho / Woong Kim / N!ko
The story of a couple bidding each other a happy farewell amidst the exclamation that spring is coming, after passionately being in love for 10 years.
The opening song for the full-length album with the same title as the album is ‘LILAC’, which presents us with the thrill of spring with a gorgeous and rhythmic sound.//
A 70-80s disco sound that harmonises the rhythmical bass line with funky and pop elements brings joy to the listeners. Im Su Ho, Dr. JO, Woong Kim, Niko participated in the song composition.
02 Flu
Lyrics By IU
Composed By Ryan S. Jhun / Martin Coogan / Madilyn Bailey / Zacchariah Palmer / London Jackson / Jacob Chatelain
Arranged By Jacob Chatelain / London Jackson / Ryan S. Jhun
When writing lyrics about the subject matter of ‘love’, the feeling that comes to the forefront for me is ‘agony’. When I finally come to the realisation that this feeling called love has been bothering me to the extent of discomfort, I feel like everything in my body has become topsy turvy. The feeling is not exactly refreshing.
This song tells the story of a final rebellion in a desperate fight from being attacked by the love virus, after a fierce denial ended in vain and left me powerless.//
Written by the hit song composer Ryan S. Jhun and his composing team, which has worked together on a variety of music projects, ‘Flu’ has an urban beat, a catchy hook and a fantasy-like melody, adding to the song’s vividness. The unique detailed lyrics filled with IU’s wit and her risqué voice maximise the song’s appeal.
03 Coin [TITLE]
Lyrics By IU
Composed By Poptime / kako / IU
Arranged by Poptime
Stimulating things have an irreplaceable appeal to them, but eventually are detrimental to our health.
Let me play just one more round of this game that is detrimental to my health. //
A new genre that IU has never tried was created by combining a sample sound reminiscent of a game room at the start, with Poptime’s funky groove band soundtrack and IU’s melody. With IU’s glamorous rapping revealed for the first time through the song release and an unconventional drop part, this song with a concept that (IU) is trying for the first time since her debut, became a hot topic since the release of the teaser video.
04 봄 안녕 봄 (Hi spring Bye)
Lyrics By IU
Composed By Naul
Arranged by Kang Hwa Seong
Although there are still times that your name unconsciously comes to my mind first,
and occasionally there are sleepless nights like these,
I won’t think of this as my lingering affection (towards you) anymore.
Just a name I recall on a tiring day
or a coincidence I want to face again
The feeling of getting off at a small stopover early in the morning, just in case
The feeling of stretching out one’s hand to the wind gently blowing past, just in case
The feeling of calling out your name when looking into the vacant gaze of a cat, in case it’s you
So you’ve turned into a butterfly
Still as beautiful as ever
So you’ve turned into a bird
Free at last
You have come again today without fail
Thank you
It’s a relief to be able to wait again tomorrow
Let’s meet again on a good day. //
The song that top Korean singer-songwriter Naul gifted IU is simple and yet the understated melody with the EP and nylon guitar tune, carefully brings out the emotions of the song. The melodious monologue-like chorus and Naul’s calm voice deepen the song a layer further. The gentle bridge that leaves an impression is straightforward, yet adds a refined touch to the song. The poetic string tunes like the arrival of spring, together with the warm electric guitar sounds, completes the classic yet emotional contemporary pop sound.
05 Celebrity
Lyrics By IU
Composed By Ryan S. Jhun / Jeppe London Bilsby / Lauritz Emil Christiansen / IU / Chloe Latimer / Celine Svanback
Arranged By Jeppe London Bilsby / Lauritz Emil Christiansen / Ryan S. Jhun
I have a friend with eye-catching outfits, slightly unique taste, various talents, a defence mechanism that started out as shyness, a personality that differentiates the likes and dislikes for everything and because of all this, was often treated as someone who is eccentric.
I love my friend even more for all these characteristics, but for the same reasons, the friend received even more looks of hatred all this while.
These lyrics started out as things I wanted to say to my ‘eccentric friend’, but as I worked on this song, I realised that this is also my story. After completing the lyrics, I think it wouldn’t be unnatural at all for anyone to become the main character, besides my friend or me. Because in life, we would definitely have experienced a sense of alienation for not having met expectations set by others. Including my friend, I want to tell those who were born unpolished yet unique. You’re not ‘byeolnan’ (eccentric) but someone who is like a ‘byeol’ (star).
‘Celebrity’ is the preview to IU’s 5th full-length album after 4 years. The pre-release track that introduces the album, ‘Celebrity’, is an electronic pop song mixed with tropical house, covering a spectrum of genres, with the involvement of Ryan S. JHyun who has produced many hit songs, Danish composer Chloe Latimer, as well as IU herself in the song production, bringing the song to a higher level of completion.
In particular, the album art has the word ‘Celebrity’ scrawled by IU using her left hand, which makes it even more special. The lighthearted and classy ‘Celebrity’ track has a hook in the style of a drop produced with synthesiser and autotune that has not been used in IU’s songs before and combined with IU’s voice, makes it more refreshing.
06 돌림노래 (Troll Feat. Dean)
Lyrics By IU / DEAN
Composed By Park Woo Sang / JUNNY / DEAN
Arranged By Park Woo Sang
Even though it’s pathetic,
If it’s still love after all this, then it’s love. //
The much-anticipated collaboration between IU and DEAN has come true. Park Woo Sang, JUNNY, DEAN, jane participated in composing the song. With a reggae and bossa nova-based genre, IU and DEAN exchange honest words with each other about a relationship like a ‘circular song’ (Korean title of this song, although the English title is ‘Troll’).
07 빈컵 (Empty Cup)
Lyrics By IU
Composed By WOOGIE / PENOMECO
Arranged by WOOGIE
Instead of the cup of coffee that is filled to the brink with the scent of the panicked faced man who was unable to grab on to the woman who got up from her seat first, only the cold remains of the coffee stain remains scarred on the floor. //
Producer WOOGIE, hip-hop musician PENOMECO, and IU. In ‘Empty Cup’, which became a hot issue since the release of the tracklist showing a fresh collaboration between artistes who cover a wide music spectrum, a toned-down IU with a lonely voice, low-fi guitar sound and R&B based band sound, maximise the chic emotions of the song.
08 아이와 나의 바다 (My sea)
Lyrics By IU
Composed By Jehwi / Kim Hee Won
Arranged by Jehwi
I am unable to love myself perfectly
After nights where my heart was down bad,
Only now have I found my ocean. //
The ‘Through the Night’ duo, composers Jehwi and Kim Heewon worked together again on a ballad track. Despite a calm beginning, the grand sound that makes its appearance matches IU’s vocals full of energy, grabbing the attention of listeners for 5 mins and 16 seconds. Also, the rich performance by the string ensemble with 20 members add to the beauty of the song and IU’s powerful high note in the second half with the choir formed by Jehwi’s friends bring the song to a dramatic climax.
09 어푸 (Ah puh)
Lyrics By IU / Lee Chan Hyuk
Composed By Lee Chan Hyuk / PEEJAY
Arranged by PEEJAY
Lets hang out near the ocean until we’re sick of each other.
A refreshing sound with an attack feel, like surfing the waves, the clicking rhythm almost like a camera shutter and a dynamic melody, which bring out the fun lyrics written together by IU and Lee Chan Hyuk. Also, the comment from Lee Chan Hyuk that ‘this would fit (the description of) a modern interpretation of IU’s refreshing songs in the early part of her career’ adds to the various highlights of this song.
10 에필로그 (Epilogue)
Lyrics By IU
Composed By Shim Eun Ji / SUMIN / Kim Soo Yeong / Im Geum Bi
Arranged by Shim Eun Ji / Kim Soo Yeong
Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all the listeners who willingly shared in conversation with me without an annoyance throughout my talkative twenties.
Not the twenty-three-year-old IU, the twenty-five-year-old IU, nor even the IU last year (28), but the me of right now will now be moving on to the next chapter.
Goodbye ♥
-from Jieun //
Shim Eun Ji, the composer of the last track of IU’s first album of her twenties ‘Spring of a Twenty Year Old’, together with singer-songwriter Kim Soo Yeong, SUMIN and Im Geum Bi, wrote the last track of this album again which brings IU’s twenties to a close. Like a relieved greeting from IU, this is a ballad song that evokes a mysterious atmosphere with a low-fi sound from an old record player and retro feels.

what better way to start off this series than with my favorite song from this era ever. the obscurant one-and-done group Knock's "못참겠네" (Moschamgess-ne; I Can't Stand It) is a profoundly strange, groovy banger that's like... you ever hear something and then never stop thinking about it for like, two-plus years? yeah, this is that. it's riding a crazy, pointillistic disco-house flow somewhere between Deavid Soul and Akufen, Cassius trading their vinyl for ROMplers, maximalist microhouse: as skeletal as it is stuffed with little details, spangles and accents, filter sweeps and microsamples. it's things like the molecular reduction of "That's the Way (I Like It)" in the intro, the track snapping into a nocturnal, jazzy hustle, the thumping kick and its accompanying squirrely bassline bending itself into a möbius strip, multiple hard-panned samples jumping out of the mix at the same time, or the digi-horns, space drums, pulses, beeps, whirls, pagers and phones all going off in parallel, and god knows what else (there's a lot more!). and the trio dovetail with and riff on all this racket perfectly, ooh-la-la harmonies colliding with angular co-ed rap geometry, sweetened sing-song into a perfect hook as sassy as it is yearning. and the breakdown after the first chorus is pure madness, a couple bars at a jagged clip and then "it's about that time I put you back on track!" in the center channel and "it's disco time, baby!" out of the left before devolving into gang chants and scream-raps. then it gets itself together and locks back on to that hellacious groove. totally devious.
it's a small thing, too, but I greatly appreciate this song knowing how good its hook is and beating the hell out of it as such. so many hits (and not-hits) of the time just sorta end, you know? here they drop the drums a second, bring them back and then hammer the hook into your brain over and over, layering the intro rap and a bunch more of those laser pulses on top. anyway... this song fuckin' rules so hard. what also fuckin' rules? this song's video!
youtube
the MV is so, so, sooooo good. a low-budget urban daydream of 90s street scenes (shout out to Freetel!), passing trains, underpass dance rituals and rain-slicked parking lots, all lit by colorful strobes and fogged-out flood lights, absolutely killer fashion (and at least two killer wigs), crazy fresh dance moves, just a bunch of grooving and messing about with friends on the street corner with a tinge of X-Files and Jet Set Radio, all linked together by an unimpeachable sense of cool. the image of the group just vibing on top of those cars while shrouded in fog and light? simply iconic. the video's mysterious nocturnal energy and heady, kinetic rhythm is the perfect match for the music, and the combination is a revelation.
youtube
the rest of Knock's sole album also rules, even if none of the other songs quite rise to the level of revelation that the title track does. every song is a keeper, whether the off-axis G-funk of "YAMMA" and "Bad Girl", the cartoonish lilt of "오리", or the infectious duo of "Miss Miss" and "너 친구맞니?!", which both utilize the structure of a four-on-the-floor hook juxtaposed with a funky syncopated rhythm for the verses. "연습게임" is mystical and subterranean, and even the requisite album-closing ballad "I feel in your eyes" is a jammer: slow-and-low, spare yet lush, unpretentious and memorable. the whole record's united by the same off-kilter soundworld that animates the title track—the same ROMpler full of samples bouncing every which way, instruments all over the place, bits and pieces of voice and sound accenting everything, almost like a fourth vocalist. it's full of hooks, microhooks and grooves, all anchored to a mad sense of rhythm and space. all these joints have been stuck in my head for ages, basically! it's always it's the weirdest, galaxy-brain tunes that go nowhere and are doomed to obscurity, ain't it.
download in FLAC or V0 (ripped from my CD... scanned, too!)
bonus fun fact #1: the female rapper with the buzz-cut is named Z-E (지이)—after Knock fizzled out, she linked up with a rapper by the name of Turtleman to form the trio Turtles (거북이), who scored hit after hit until Turtleman's tragic passing in 2008. Turtles were a universally beloved trio, and deservedly so—they also absolutely rule.
bonus fun fact #2 and #3: "못참겠네" (plus "YAMMA" and "Bad Girl") was arranged by one Jegal Min (제갈민), one of the unsung heroes (see also: Shin Young-sub (신영섭)) of the original 1992-1994 "rap dance" craze that was dominated by Seo Taiji, Hyun Jin-young, DEUX and others. like many a failed pop star, he then found far more success in production and management. one of his backup dancers, Kim Jung-nam, later found stardom as half of the legendary Turbo (터보).
bonus fun fact #4: future entries in this series will absolutely not go on this long. i just really love this song, yeah?
tumblr exclusive bonus fun fact #5: periodical old kpop power hour of power (POKPHOP) is a series i've started on my cohost page but to a certain extent this tumblr has been on a POKPHOP for seven whole years now

Pitchfork’s Album Review on “Embrya” by Maxwell
Tumblr media
“ The reissue of Maxwell’s second album from 1998 showcases the mercurial spirit that followed the R&B auteur down new, aqueous corridors.
In 2011, during the filming of his “VH1 Storytellers” episode, Maxwell attempted to describe his second album, 1998’s Embrya, and its uneasy position in his discography, the way it wriggles away from the more concrete and clarified R&B statements that surround it. “It’s one of those records where you’re like, ‘Should I have done that or should I have not done that record?’,” he said, seeming to pose the question to his own audience.
When Maxwell arrived on radio and MTV in 1996, he brought a sound back with him, the quietly storming soul music of the late-’70s and early-’80s, a genre that could hover politely in the air between neighbors at a cookout or totally collapse the air between two people in a bedroom. His debut, Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite, modeled itself after records like Marvin Gaye’s I Want You, linked sequences of seduction that either blossomed toward or shrank away from the possibility of love; it eventually sold two million copies and earned Maxwell a Grammy nod.
Now he wanted the sound he had pulled from the past to follow him and bend around whichever corner he turned. As he told the Sydney Morning Herald in 2016, “What I did with [Embrya], on purpose, was that it was the anti-Afro ’70s funk-soul record.” He resisted the notion that his music could be pinned down and examined, and he seemed to want to write music that could circulate forever, that slipped away from any attempt to capture it, like a wave of water or an anxious thought. The songs he wrote for Embrya respond to this inner stubbornness, loosen themselves from their points, spread and pale like watercolors. It was as if had he had opened a window in his urban hang suite and the ocean poured in.
Made primarily as a reaction to his own debut album, Embrya has few previous models for its itself. It is the only R&B record I’ve ever heard that’s submerged as it is. (Even the Sade records that producer Stuart Matthewman worked on periodically come up for air.) At an hour long, it spills itself across four sides of vinyl on its new reissue, released on the occasion of the album’s 20th anniversary. It can be difficult to focus on its individual hooks; they rear up and break apart like waves in bottomless lakes of songs. Flamenco guitar solos ripple and die off like pulses on a radar screen. Strings stir and resettle like clouds of silt at the bottom of an aquarium.
There’s simply not enough water metaphors on this green earth to describe Embrya. This is by design; few R&B albums, let alone albums in general, embody the liquid rush of desire as completely as it does. Maxwell’s piercing tenor is double-tracked so often that even its edges seem watery, and his lyrics crumble from the direct romanticism of Urban Hang Suite into impressions and feelings that aren’t necessarily certain of what they are; he sings words like “plush” and “blush” almost interchangeably, and they melt away in pale petals of near-meaning.
As each song wades gradually from chord to chord, it grows harder to determine one’s position in them, whether at their middles or near their ends or slipping away into new, just-forming instrumentals, as when “Matrimony: Maybe You”—a pop-jazz track smooth and untroubled as the skin of a pebble—narrowly forks into a funk workout called “Arroz con Pollo.” Which isn’t to suggest the sound of the album is uniform; its songs are as various and vivid in their depth charges of color as Monet’s “Water Lilies,” which he painted as his vision was failing and the world itself was melting into streaks of color. There are indeed verses and choruses on Embrya; there’s a deep mysterious pull in the groove of “Luxury: Cococure” from which the chorus seems to bubble upward. “Drowndeep: Hula” is one of Maxwell’s tenderest yet murkiest ballads; if its drumbeat were a little slower and dilated it might’ve produced an early draft of Massive Attack’s “Teardrop” instead. “Gravity: Pushing to Pull” finds Maxwell descending to a pressurized depth, his voice riven with low distortions. But as Embrya advances it can feel just as often like a lens is dwelling over different gatherings of sound—hands swimming up the keys of a synthesizer, basslines played so flexibly they’re invertebrate—briefly snapping them into focus before they sink back into the texture of the record.
In this way Embrya somewhat foreshadows D’Angelo’s 2000 masterpiece Voodoo, both artists searching for something even beyond the outer limits of their debut albums, both records achieving something close to perpetual motion in the slow circulation of their grooves. But where Voodoo stretches time out until it’s crisp and brittle, Embrya’s time feels thick and immeasurable and seems to pass in gradual stirrings, the liquid counterpoint to Voodoo’s spare, desiccated funk. It’s an album of traceless, amnesiac swellings, never seeming to quite know where it’s going or where it’s just been, flowing without ever seeming aware of its flowing, which is its truly remarkable achievement. According to Maxwell, Embrya is “a story that unfolds,” but it’s impossible to pick up a single thread of it and follow it to its original source; it’s all source, a concept album in which there is no concept, just feelings, impressions, intimacies and their absences, wave after wave after unending wave of them.”

With the Julian Siegel Quartet, the BBC Jazz Award winning saxophonist and composer Julian Siegel can be heard alongside some of this generation’s most distinctive voices, creating an in-demand Quartet on the UK and European Jazz scene. The band features inspirational pianist Liam Noble, his fluid touch and dazzling imagination perfectly complementing Siegel’s music and playing, and providing a perfect foil for the many directions the music can turn. With the creative spark of dynamic drummer Gene Calderazzo and the deep groove of bassist Oli Hayhurst dove-tailing perfectly with Siegel and Noble this is unquestionably one of the UK’s most exciting and powerful quartets. Following up from their London Jazz Award winning album Urban Theme Park (Basho Music), 2018 saw the release of VISTA, the second album of the Julian Siegel Quartet and the first on the Whirlwind Recordings label. The album features ten of Julian’s compositions plus an arrangement of Bud Powell's ‘Un Poco Loco’. This acoustic set of music moves freely through varied sound worlds and colours, from undercurrents of bop to searching ballads and joyful melodies. The bands UK/Ireland Tour Spring 2024 will feature music from the bands albums plus new music written especially for the band's upcoming tour.

✨Greetings!✨
I used Tumblr years ago but then quit. I'm back now cause I want to post my art and do other things. My blog appearance/format may change a lot until I'm satisfied with it. Meanwhile, I hope you enjoy what I post!
Here are some things about me.... ✝️ I'm a Christian! Protestant. No particular denomination, just a broken person working to grow and improve. 🙏 😅 I am socially awkward and have social anxiety so please have patience with me. Also working on getting "officially" diagnosed for ADHD. 🎨 As for art, I use clip studio paint, graphite, manga pens, watercolours, and acrylic. For music I use Bandlab, Garageband, and FL Studio 🖌️ 🐉I love drawing my OCs and making my own stories. Fantasy is my favourite genre, but I also love urban fantasy, so you might see a lot of that! (Urban fantasy is like fantasy but in a more modern setting instead of medieval times!) ⚔️🩸I am not afraid to draw "darker" things such as serious subject matter, blood, angst, etc. There will be NO NSFW here, but not all of my art or writings will be sunshine and rainbows :) 🩸 !!MY CURRENT PROJECTS!!:
Hedron's Hex: An action fantasy comic about betrayal, good vs evil, and magic.
Minophelia (placeholder name): An rpgmaker style dark fantasy game with horror elements inspired by greek mythology and games like Earthbound, Fear and Hunger, and classic horror rpgmaker games. Now, onto my favourite things! ~FAVOURITE ARTISTS: Wlop, rosygloomart, Kan Liu, PrinceCanary, SamDoesArts, Emily Xu.~ ~FAVOURITE MOVIES: Atlantis the Lost Empire, LOTR trilogy, Batman trilogy (with Christian Bale), Howl's Moving Castle, White Christmas (1954), The Thing (1982), Emperor's New Groove.~ ~FAVOURITE SHOWS: Gravity Falls, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Over the Garden Wall, Transformers Prime, Trigun (1998), Trigun Stampede, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.~ ~FAVOURITE GAMES: Portal 2, Mirror's Edge, Minecraft, Skyrim, Ark Survival Evolved, Stardew Valley.~ ~FAVOURITE MUSIC: All but country and most modern pop/EDM.~ ~And finally, GENERAL INTERESTS: Crochet, nature, pizza, writing, gardening, sometimes spoopy stuff like cryptids and analog horror, the 80s 50s and 90s, DnD, and pretty things.~
