Spy x Family Volume 11 Ultra Collector

Well, I'm going to be a little late with Spy x Family and the start of Apothecary Diaries today because my afternoon is very busy, so let me show off this really cool Spy Fam special edition from French publisher Kurokawa.

Yeah, there's a hell of a lot in here, and a lot to chat about. Let me start with the box first. Truthfully, I'm sort of let down by it. It's less robust than the volume 8 special edition's box that is a bottom and a lid. Volume 11's using a thinner/lighter box overall and opens via flaps on the side instead of lifting up the top.

What I do like about this box though is how it sticks close in style to volume 8's. Where 8 was a suitcase, volume 11 is all about a TV, which has a pretty fun gimmick. That illustration of Anya, Loid, and Yor? You can actually swap it out with 3 others to "change the channel" on the TV. It's a fun way to spice up the exterior, but I have just one complaint: it's rather finnicky. The card that the illustrations are on is just sorta "in" the box, so it slides and moves around and whatnot. I would have really appreciated a little pocket or sleeve on the inside that the card slid into, but also, this is just the package that the good stuff comes in.

So speaking of good stuff, the tote bag. It's very fun, and surprisingly good quality. The bag also features the illustration of the Forger family on both sides of the bag. I wouldn't say it's the biggest ever, but you could comfortably use it for light to medium shopping in terms of manga. Can't fit 10+ volumes in here easily, but I think anything less than that is plenty fine.

Alright, next up is the books. Now, this is the special edition for volume 11, but there's another volume in here? Well that's because they include the Spy x Family light novel 'Family Portrait' with it. Very cool to see, but I do sort of wish we could have had a special cover for it as well. Though I mean, beggars can't be choosers we got one for Volume 11. Also, I really appreciate that French pubs either make the dust jackets reversible, or keep the original dust jacket alongside the special one. For display purposes it's very handy.

Both the coolest but most frustrating piece in this special edition is the bookend. I think it's a super cool thing to add, especially since it's metal, but that's also where the problem comes in. You need to bend the bookend to make it a bookend. With it being metal, there's not really any going back if you wanted to just display it as a metal card. Not something I like, so it'll be living as metal card forever. Though it's not like I have any alternatives for how they could avoid this issue, so it's a bit hard to voice it as a valid complaint.

And now into the illustration cards. I love getting stuff like this because it gives you so much freedom. They're loose and individual, not double sided, and of decent size (the same size as the manga). Some might disagree, but I think it's fun that they're pre-existing artworks (two of the landscape cards are featured as a poster in the LN). Mostly because you get to 'have' the art from various places as their own separate thing. Really liked one of the color pages or illustrations for Spy x Family, but Viz doesn't do color pages for the manga? Well, now you get them here and separate from the manga. Just a nice touch.

Speaking of nice touches, the bookmarks. They're just from the various covers of the manga, but I think as a sentiment they're a very nice addition (especially because I don't have any bookmarks at all). Just something very simple and easy to add to flesh out the goodies you can get from the special edition.

So there it is, the super cool 'ultra collector' edition of Spy x Family. This is a really interesting addition to my collection and I think a lot of the pieces to this are very unique in terms of what you'll see with special editions. Word of warning though, it's not a cheap special edition. Considering how much comes with it, I'd still say it's worth it for those that enjoy it, but it's not something that a lot of people will "just pick up".

In a time like this, what would she do? Various questions with two possible answers, let’s have a look at this lovely musumeyaku!

Questions

You have until tomorrow to create a hair arrangement!! But you’re exhausted today. What do you do?

Stay up all night and do it.

Sleep for now, wake up early and do it.

Stay up all night and do it (laughs) ! Especially during rehearsals, I’ll do it once, then again to fix it up... That’s my routine, so if I don’t get a start on it early, I’ll start fretting over it. There’s also a lot of times where I’ll work through the night, only for the sun to start to rise, but if I have 3 hours I’ll still sleep (laughs).

2. What will you wear tomorrow?

Wake up early and decide based on how you feel

When I have a photo shoot or something I’ll decide early, but during mornings with nothing going on, I’ll start by deciding on my hair. I’m mostly in rehearsals, so my highest priority is deciding what hairstyle I’ll have during rehearsals that day. However, when I’m getting into my role, my hairstyle will have the same type of vibe everyday, so to match my hair and earrings, I also change what I’m wearing. Depending on what role I have, my clothing taste will inevitably be decided by that.

3. Morning routine?

Relax for now

When I wake up I immediately brew coffee, does that count as getting going immediately? (laughs) But drinking it is my time to lay back, so I guess it’s more relaxing. My cat will also wake me up sometimes, so recently I wake up super early. Even if rehearsals are at 1 o’clock, I’ll wake up at 7 or 8. Because I hate rushing (laughs), I make plenty of time to get ready to leave.

4. Breakfast?

Western food

I boil vegetables without seasoning in advance, then that day depending on my mood I’ll add it to miso or consomme, so would that be Japanese food or Western food? Ah, but, in order to avoid iron deficiency, lately I’ve been eating meat for breakfast. I eat roast beef made from grass fed beef (cows raised on only grass) garnished with baby leaves so maybe more so Western food. I eat rice but also don’t. I make onigiri and bring it to the theater to eat before rehearsals.

5. Leaving for rehearsals!

I bring just what I need !

Paranoid... so I over pack...

My day-to-day luggage is the minimum, but in case something happens I have a bunch of spare leotards and skirts in my theater locker. So I have ultra-large luggage on the first day of rehearsals (laughs).

6. Tomorrow you have the day off for the first time in a while!

Ya-y! I’m gonna stay up late!

I want to do some things from the morning so I’ll go to sleep early

I do both of these~! I like movies, so if there’s stuff I want to watch I’ll stay up until 1 or 2 A.M., but despite that I’ll still wake up early, so I guess B. Especially on days off I don’t really sleep and wake up early and get done all the housework I can do!

7. You’re going to spend the whole-day at home!

Don’t leave the house all day

Go outside for a bit for fresh air

I won’t leave (laughs). During stay at home I did a lot of de-cluttering and rearranging and my ventilation got better, so spending time at home is a lot more pleasant. There’s a chair and table on my veranda, so if I want fresh air I’ll relax there. During days where I’m at home all day I will watch movies and YouTube and do my meal prep.

8. You’re going out today. What will you do?

Stick to a plan

Go as heart your heart desires

Before I leave my house, I make a precise plan. Even if I can’t find clothes I want to buy in my allotted time, it’s a waste of time to just continue wandering looking for it, I’ll just go buy something online and move onto my next plan (laughs). If there’s something I’ve decided I want beforehand, I’ll call ahead to see if they have it in-stock then head out. During times when I have nothing but 1 day off, some level of effort is important (laughs).

9. If you’re going out...

Hands down, go alone

Invite someone out

Alone (immediate response). I think it would be impossible to date me, maybe (laughs). If I do go out shopping with someone, it’s about Costco level (laughs). If we go out for tea or food, you don’t decide on a time to leave and stay for hours, but that’s hard to do right now...

10. You found a piece of clothing you like♡

Look at other stores and carefully decide

There’s of course times where I took my time to decide, but other than that, there’s a lot of times where I think, “I want this!” then buy it. There’s times where it got to the point I wouldn’t even look at the price and buy it (laughs).

11. If you start to get hungry?

Go into a restaurant alone

Go home

I bear the hunger, and eat once I get home. Because if I didn’t I’d mess up my schedule and I hate that (laughs). It’s different when I include lunch time in my schedule from the start, but if that’s not the case, I feel like it’s time wasted ordering and then waiting for the food.

12. Today is all you can eat! What do you take on?

I think if this was a while ago I would answer sweets, but lately I’ve been all about eating healthy foods. I’ve always loved meat, and it really hasn’t been the best situation to go out to eat in, so if I were able to do all you can eat, hands down yakiniku. If I say I’m gonna eat, then I can eat quite a bit. I also love rice, so after eating a bunch of meat, I’d want to top it off with some rice.

In order of importance….

1. Battlestar Galactica: Top comfort show. It’s so gritty and raw and human. It takes a colossal misstep once or twice toward the end, but otherwise strikes that perfect tone for me. Takes itself very seriously. Lots of messy characters. Lots of quasi-familial relationships. Lots of abstract philosophy. 10/10

2. Jane the Virgin: Probably the most lighthearted, fun show I’ve watched in my whole life. And at the same time it pushes forward so many gorgeous voices and narratives. The magical realism. The high drama. The grace with which they handle harder topics. Completely a roller coaster. And she’s a writer? SOLD.

3. Bones: When I was younger I was super into anatomy and biology. Throw the psychology in… Fantastic whole-cast chemistry... Just love this one so much. And it’s probably the only show I’ve watched that wasn’t afraid of or ruined by giving the audience what they wanted. I’ve seen all 12 seasons, most more than once.

4. Vikings: I fell off the wagon at Paris, but I LOVE this show. The gritty realism and cultural immersion. All the unconventional thinkers. And Lagertha. Lagertha!! And religious discourse. So good.

5. Survivor: Still watch whenever I can. The self-awareness, social awareness, strategy combination is fascinating to me. Perspective-taking is my favorite pastime 😂 I’ve been vying for my dad to do it for years, because he’s a mastermind of in that field.

6. Supernatural: Really just the first few seasons, where they stick to the original premise. AC/DC and family dynamics and the contrast between the brothers? In a lot of ways I AM Sam and I ultra bond with Dean types, so this really caught me. I’m very afraid of the fandom at large though. I just can’t fly at that frequency 😂

7. Great British Bake Off: When I need to hard reset my brain, this is what I watch. They’ve lost me the last few seasons, but it’s so wonderfully low impact. A safety show. Fantastic on a sick day. All the warm cozies.

8. Schitt’s Creek: I think I love high drama because I’m naturally ultra-low key. Hard to overstate that. I’ve been told I’m a very calming presence. I’m pretty unflappable, but I LOVE being chaos-adjacent 😂 This show took a long time to hook me, but once it did, I think it’s here to stay.

All right. I'm bored and feel like doing this here, so I'm gonna rate some of the ability names (English version, at least) for fun/no absolute reason

(For the record, as of the day writing this post, I've only read snatches of the manga, none of the LNs, and have just watched the anime)

Let's GOOOO

Armed Detective Agency

All Men Are Equal (Fukuzawa) - 7/10 good, fits the ability, but it doesn't blow me away. Honestly makes me think of the American Declaration of Independence and I feel slightly bad for that

Thou Shalt Not Die (Yosano) - 9/10 seriously cool. I love that it's phrased like a command...it's both desperation and a demand i love it.

Super/Ultra Deduction (Ranpo) - 4/10 sorry Ranpo but this sounds like an adaptation of superstrength or super smarts for deduction. IDK maybe Fukuzawa made it up on the spot for Ranpo?

No Longer Human (Dazai) - 8/10 very fitting...captures Dazai's personality and has fun implications about abilities being part of someone's humanity even though that's probably not intended. Just an author work's ref but still a cool name anyway

Doppo/The Matchless Poet (Kunikida) - 8/10 but ONLY for the Matchless Poet (or Lone Poet) because it's so Kunikida and really conjures the image of that whole paragon archetype. Doppo Poet? Really english dub??

Light Snow (Tanizaki) - 6/10 but may get higher depending on tanizaki's arc. Such an inoffensive ability name, cute, understates what a terrifying ability it could be...a bit like the boy himself. Maybe 7 or 8 out of 10, hmm...

Beast Beneath the Moonlight/Byakko (Atsushi) - 6/10 sorry my boy, but its such a literal name (like Yosano's but descriptive instead of imperative). I'm not sure where Byakko comes from but you should have stuck with that as it's a solid 10/10 name.

Undefeated by the Rain (Kenji) - 8/10 i love the image it draws. Standing strong even though the rain is pouring WHILE it's pouring. Love you, Kenji

Demon Snow (Kyouka) - 7/10 tbh it doesnt make too much sense if you think about it too hard but it sure is a cool name regardless. And it's fun to say so my bias is leaking....

Port Mafia

Falling Camellia (Hirotsu) - 9/10 old man your ability name is PRETTY for an ability that's literally just pushing. But the words kinda fit the vibe and make the ability sound cool

Vita Sexualis (Mori) - 5/10 this is latin for sex power and im sure if you've read my tags I have petty beef against sex and romance (it's mostly as a joke but I'm still gonna let it color all my opinions). Sorry Elise...you're cool but the ability name is honestly sus. However, points for the language consistency (dead languages make anything sound cool)

Golden Demon (Kouyou) - 6/10 sorry Kouyou, but like Atsushi's, it's too literal and descriptive. But at least it sticks to the original title's name

Lemonade/Lemon Bomb (Kajii) - ???/10 i honestly dont know what i feel about this one. Kajii is the reason I look at the whole "abilities are an expression of your soul" thing with utter bemusement. I do LOVE his ability cause it's so unnecessarily random but the name? Idk...maybe 5/10? References the title but also feels slightly too literal?

For the Tainted Sorrow (Chuuya) - 10/10 im sorry but the way it sounds in English appeals to me personally. It's both the title and starring line of IRL Nakahara's poem and I honestly love that so much. Such gravity in those lines (wait....??)

Rashoumon (Akutagawa) - 10/10 it just gets points for its name staying the same in all languages. See, Atsushi? This is what you could have had with Byakko

Midwinter Memento (Tachihara) - 8/10 could be higher honestly because I love the alliteration and the phrase just has nice vibes. Don't know how well it fits the metalbending but it sure fits Tachihara and the way the past haunts him ya know? It makes me wonder if his ability is passed down or gets stronger with remembered trauma or whatever?

Dogra Magra (Q) - 9/10 no clue what this means and google isn't helping. But again with the language consistency...and it also just sounds cool and rhyme-y and slightly horrory. Its the vibes

Flawless (Odasaku) - 8/10 i like the name and all the things it connotes. You have to get real philosophical to parse the connection between his ability and its name, though. But that's why I love it

The Madness of the Jewel King (Ace) - 6/10 a cool name but the existence of Ace confuses me. Wiki says something about Alan Bennet or a character from Dostoy. Im here wondering why another foreign (it seems) dude is working so high up in the PM. Mori and his western loving tendencies, i guess? Anyway. The name also kinda feels more descriptive, but it gets points for drama

A: Okay so 2ha is the easiest to answer because no joke I am Chu Wanning. Both of us are dreadfully messy, socially anxious, talented but with very low sense of self-worth and horny levels infinite towards Mo Ran (the only difference being I wouldn't whip anyone because I got jealous lmao I have self control there on point)

i kept starting this post and then kept realising that i needed to provide more context for basically everything about this, and now i've started a whole second post! jesus.

JJBA: The games

last autumn i secured a physical copy of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Heritage for the Future edition of CAPCOM Secret File. the secret files were a series of booklets, 27 in total and 12 pages each, published by CAPCOM between 1994-1999, about their various games. There's a list of them here.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, JoJo's Venture, JJBA: Heritage For The Future... these games are all called JJBA, but, they're all just part 3, Stardust Crusaders. i'm not sure how much i need to say about JJBA/Stardust Crusaders here, because you probably either know what it is or have (voluntarily or otherwise) absorbed information about it thru like, a collective unconscious or something.

why so many?? why do people like this so much?? well, at face value, Stardust Crusaders is appealing for a lot of reasons.

Part 1 - Phantom Blood is a period piece/vampire story set in the late 1880s, introducing us to the central Joestar family and their adopted son turned enemy, Dio Brando, along with the existence of magical/supernatural objects and abilities.

Part 2 - Battle Tendency is a more Indiana Jones/Sherlock-esque narrative set in the late 30s. continues with a new Joestar generation, new abilities, jokes, and tragedies.

both of these have a smaller central cast and there are early themes here that the manga author, Hirohiko Araki, didn't keep as he was fleshing out the story. so, unlike its predecessors, most of the themes and ideas Stardust Crusaders explores are carried throughout the rest of the parts.

Part 3 - Stardust Crusaders takes place in the late 1980s. this one is more of an ensemble with a very modern/popular shounen setup which makes it more familiar to people who've grown up with The Big 3 (Naruto, Bleach, One Piece) and other popular series (Boku no hero Academia, Kimetsu no Yaiba) that all have more in common with this setup. A band of weirdos, a legacy, a taciturn protagonist, a big flamboyant villain with villainous friends, powers, monsters of the week, compelling emotional beats... it's got broad appeal and is the easiest entry point into the series. this part introduces more special powers, specifically Stands-- a sort of spirit or aura with a typically (but not always!) humanoid form that can make attacks or take damage for its host/user.

there are 8 parts in total, with plans for a 9th recently announced. and while all related, each part takes on different things-- different protagonists, with different lives, exploring different aspects and exceptions to what's been introduced already. a lot of fans might just stick to their favourite part and not continue with or have the same relationship to the other parts of the series, if they even read/watch them at all. the parts do, though, reference one another, sometimes in small ways, but typically plot-relevant ones, even tying up or bringing back plot points from much earlier, thereby expanding this immersive world. the scope is limited to the family, but their roles within and relationship to that family evolve and intensify in emotional complexity as the series continues. the series also shifts from shounen to seinen (switching too from Shonen to Ultra Jump) although it bridged this from the beginning, and even as a shonen, employed adult themes with older characters. in fact, if shounen is for "adolescent boys," a slim few of the characters themselves fit this description, never mind the makeup of the fanbase.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (1993)

the first JoJo's Bizarre Adventure game was developed for the Super Famicon/SNES system by WinkySoft and released in 1993 as part point-and-click, part side-scroller RPG.

JoJo's [Bizarre Ad]venture (1998)

in 1998, Capcom made the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure fighting game for the CP System III arcade boards and for the Playstation 1-- in the west, this game was simply known as JoJo's Venture. this was the final game made for the CP System III and the last proprietary system board Capcom produced before moving to the Sega Dreamcast-based Naomi platform (which, while an acronym-- or technically a backronym, because-- it was named after Naomi Campbell, apparently.)

in Jojo's Venture, there's also a mistranslation where Jotaro's mom refers to Joseph Joestar as her uncle, rather than her father/Jotaro's grandfather.

Re-release (1999)

in 1999, that game was further revised and re-released into arcades and onto the Dreamcast. if you're interested, here's someone comparing the Dreamcast experience to the PS1, although iirc they don't take into account elements like the loss of Story Mode.

when these games were brought to the US, they were at the time the only English-language JJBA material available, and so most people were primed for Stardust Crusaders before any other part of the series. as far as i've been able to confirm, the subbed and dubbed edition of the collected JJBA OVA would come later, in 2003-2005.

within this, i get a little lost about which assets belong to which edition, so forgive me. i only have a japanese version of the Dreamcast edition, but i've encountered the 1998 version of the game in the wild, at a dusty old arcade on the coast of Maine, USA. from what i understand, the first releases were both fairly simple , with major alterations made to the story in order to fit on these systems.

my favourite villain in Stardust Crusaders is N'doul, and that's the whole reason i got the Secret File.

why is he my wife? i don't fucking know it will take a million years to explain (and something i'll do gladly) because it's heavily based in context and framing, tonal shifts and such. it makes as much sense as anything else, which is none or a lot. this series is a circus and no matter who it is, your fave is the king clown.

essentially, what got me is that N'doul is the first enemy the group fights after arriving in Egypt, their ultimate destination, which marks a tonal shift in Stardust Crusaders (whether you're reading it, or watching it, or playing these linear games) that i find compelling. at the very least, he comes with implications of a shift, including in how each character reacts to the fight and the expanse of the fight itself in the desert, and what their enemies' fealty to Dio means. in the manga, in the OVA, in the anime, in the games, Jotaro reacts the same way: first horror, and then admiration.

not only is he a honey, he's objectively a honey compared to his squad.

while only the Crusaders are playable in the 1993 version, many of the enemies are playable in the next versions, including Dio, Anubis-possessed Polnareff, young (Battle Tendency) Joseph Joestar, Matrix Mode Kakyoin, Hol Horse...

here's some shit that really cuts me up! N'doul, too, was originally planned as a playable character in Heritage for the Future, to the point of him having both sprites and artwork assets that are easily acquired via hacking, and concept art in the design files describing how he would fight.

in Stardust Crusaders, there's a stand user named Alessi who uses his powers to de-age his enemies, turning them into children. (it sucks mostly.) so basically anyone who might fight against Alessi gets a kid/younger version to match. in addition to the above concept art, there was also this

Due to the fact that many of his stand's attacks are drawn with the reflection of the desert in it, it's likely that he was kept a sub-boss so that Capcom didn't need to redraw all of his stand's sprites.

you can see what the writer on TCRF meant by the added complexity in the water, potentially necessitating detailed edits that wouldn't be required for other stands.

here's someone's playthrough. as you can see, his water-based attacks are mostly at ground level-- you have to run/jump through the desert until you finally reach him, at which point you can kill him in one blow because he has only 5HP.

one fun fact is that in order to fight N'doul in story mode, you must play as Jotaro 😌 (in Oingo & Boingo's Gallery Mode, you can fight him as any of the characters.)

however, if this is Super Story mode, it seems to be missing some of the background assets, parts of the cutscenes, and/or may even be a censored version (the censored versions crop up a lot in the Western releases.) i know for a fact i've played a different version: as you move through this boss fight, you see a downed helicopter and the body of its pilot. this follows the manga and anime plotline, where N'doul uses his water to attack them. The pilot was wearing a wristwatch with an alarm, and when it starts beeping, N'doul reacts harshly to the sound and destroys it-- cutting off the man's hand in the process.

Since then

in the mobile game JoJo Stardust Shooters (which ended in 2021) N'doul's skills formally classify him as a Sniper. he's a long-range stand user, patient, traveling from place to place in pursuit of his enemy, waiting for long periods of time until his prey is exactly where he needs them to be, and then takes the shot. then he will fall back, and because of the distance, the enemy (whether or not they can detect a fellow stand user) may not be able to track him. not all stand users can take advantage of distance; many stands are close-range only.

when we look at his stats, it's clear that sniper suits him perfectly and differentiates him from other characters, including their iterations as playable characters in video game format:

if i'm understanding correctly, we're meant to interpret the low precision this way: being blind, he can't 100% accurately choose his target through sight, only guessing at them through what he infers through sound. it's weird though, because in the manga and anime we basically only see him nail the right person, decimating the main team quickly, and in his very first appearance, catches fly mid-air. so idfk!!!

not everyone likes to play as a sniper, and it might be especially confusing in a fighting game that's so similar to the Street Fighter format-- where incorporating a distance aspect to each stage might not be appropriate, ultimately. in 2015, n'doul was included in the roster for the Bandai-Namco joint Eyes of Heaven, developed by CyberConnect2 fr the PS3/PS4.

I had a thought…Isn’t it interesting how like Showa shows weren’t popular at all with a few exceptions when they began? Like, I feel like whenever I read up on KR or Ultra Showa shows they always add “this show wasn’t successful” or “it failed to meet expectations”. Have you noticed too or am I crazy?

It's a pretty simple case of the original show and franchise itself being successful but follow-ups failing to replicate that because interests generally went elsewhere. Like, Kamen Rider was a mega-hit (it went on for 98 episodes that probably isn't a surprise) and popularity peaked in V3; but from X onwards it started to fizzle out in large part due to Mecha anime being the new big thing and then Goranger being a big hit itself being the final death knell for it to end during Stronger.

Following on with the Kamen Rider example actually because it's surprisingly quite useful, there's also the element of higher-ups just having really stupid conceptions. So Skyrider for instance was really successful and popular and that's why it was followed up instantly with another Kamen Rider show in Super-1; and while Super-1 didn't do amazingly, a shift in the channel's timeslots in Tokyo caused it to see a sharp decrease in viewership - because shockingly it's harder to get kids to watch something at 7 on a sunday morning rather than 8 on a saturday evening - and the higher-ups only saw Tokyo as important so they axed it.

You can generally see this pattern with most of what you've seen -- franchise decay as other things became more interesting, and the occasional meddling from execs. For non-franchise Toku it's usually a case of throwing everything on the wall and only a few things sticking (there's a reason the 70s was called a Toku Boom there was an INSANELY long list of random Toku shows back then) because, yeah, ultimately only a few things are going to truly see success

Summer of Strawberry Shortcake: Berry Bitty Adventures episodes 8-10

Two pretty good episodes with one just okay episode in the middle this time around.

Strawberry's House Pests is one of my favorite season one episodes because of how far the twins' awful behavior (and her belief that she has to put up with it) pushes Strawberry. Seriously, the fury she displays when she reaches her limit is *chef's kiss*. I don't think there's another episode where we actually see her get angry, so seeing it here feels very refreshing (even though this is only episode 8). And the writers really did find a lot creative ways for Kadiebug and Sadiebug to be the worst guests possible.

As I said, Berry Bitty World Record is just okay, but it's a good ensemble episode, if not a standout one. And for some reason Mr. Longface Caterpillar's voice is deeper in this one?

Too Cool for Rules cemented Plum as my season one favorite back in the day. Feeling the sting of being reprimanded for breaking too many rules that don't seem like a big deal to her, she institutes her own silly rules, causing Raspberry, Lemon, and Mr. Longface Caterpillar to retaliate with silly rules of their own. I loved how ridiculously stubborn she was in sticking to her grudge-fueled rules and how things escalate with the others and their own silly rules, until of course it all leads to the logical conclusion of everyone losing business because of them. And Plum's eventual epiphany about most rules having a good reason behind them feels natural, even if the holes Jadeybug's heels left behind do not:

Somehow I doubt those heels would leave holes that big

Speaking of Jadeybug, another little thing I like about this ep is that it brought back her love of specials stamps, first seen in episode 7. I just love how excited she gets to use the “Extra Special Super Urgent Ultra Fast Delivery” stamp, a stamp so special it's kept under lock and key. Jadeybug's just a fun character in general, and it's too bad we didn't get to see more of her after season one.

Next up is the first three-episode story arc of the series (and the first episodes of BBA to be released after Sky's the Limit).

i took 2 days off bc day 1 i was super ultra mega tired, and yesterday i was in a lot of pain. BUT WE’RE BACK AT IT TODAY

i watched some of the retro replay playthrough w troy and nolan ft. various guests and getting an insight on this game makes it even more meaningful than it already is.

idk it feels like a privilege to play this game to me? maybe that’s why i waited 9 years to play it? which i’m glad that i did bc my love for storytelling and my eye for certain things has grown a lot over the past year, and i feel like i can enjoy the experience of the game more.

i also feel like i’m more mature enough to play it now? it always scared me to play, which it still does, but i feel like i’m more equipped to handle the subject matters and the material.

i know that i still have a lot of emotional turmoil to get through, so i will save it for tomorrow!

Sweet Holiday Breads

So by this I'm talking about those cinnamon raisin breads you might see in the store, or a generic rich bread that might have chopped fruit in it. This isn't brioche, or laminated bread, or even something using tangzhong.

Here, a half loaf is about 8 bucks, which is ridiculous.

I've done this with leftover dough, but you will need to have an idea of how much flour you've got in there, or an approximate amount compared to your loaf pan.

A basic recipe, using Bernard Clayton's Babka bread, would be this:

2 cup flour (this will likely need another 1/4 cup to come together)

1 Tb yeast (You can go down to 1 tsp, but we're aiming for cheap and fast)

3/4 ish cups milk (potato cooking water for an ultra tender dough, milk and water, etc.)

1 tsp salt (you might be able to get by with 3/4 tsp, but I find that this amount works nicely)

2 eggs or 1 yolks 1 egg depending on the dryness of the day and size of eggs you have. Save extra whites if you want to brush the top.

1/4 cup very soft or melted but not super hot butter (can go down to 2 TB, but you do need some.)

1/4 cup sugar (I do not add this. I do add 1 TB honey for rising speed + helping the bread keep longer, but it will get you closer to the commercial levels of sugar.)

Mix up with flavorings of choice, and let rise. You do not need to knead heavily, but you do want no flour lumps and at least a minute of vigorous troubling. When you're ready to fill it, work in enough flour that it's not sticking to your hands, but do not go until it's not sticking to a dry board. Prep a greased loaf pan before you get to filling, since your hands might be too sticky afterwards.

Flavorings:

1/4 tsp vanilla extract

small pinch ground cardamom. I buy the seeds and run them through a mortar and pestle for price reasons. You could also do a pinch of saffron in the milk, but that's not cheap.

Do not mix in cinnamon in the dough unless you have plenty of time. Cinnamon slows the action of yeast, and can make your bread take twice as long to rise.

Fillings:

(Pat out your dough to about a 6 inch by 10 inch rectangle and spread out to taste. You can knead chopped fruit in, but hold back having it break the surface. Raisins or the like will turn very dark and puff up, which is a favorite treat for my father, but can be aesthetically unpleasing. PIck about three of these at most at first.)

1/2 cup raisins / dried mixed fruit (rehydrate in rum / brandy / water that you've heated up if it seems very dry.)

1/2 cup nuts (toasted pecans, walnuts, slivered almonds. Cut up into smaller pieces for easier cutting.)

1/2 cup chocolate chopped (do not get near the surface of the dough, since it will make a mess.)

1/2 cup almond paste (make your own with 50 g almond flour, 50 g sugar of choice, 1 egg, almond seasoning.)

1/4 cup cinnamon sugar paste (2 TB butter, 2 TB sugar, as much cinnamon as you deem necessary. 2 TB?)

8 sugar cubes, smashed lightly with 1 TB cinnamon

Roll up, put in greased pan, cover to not dry out, and it'll rise in about an hour. Brush with egg if you want.

Bake 350 for 45. You may find it done at 35, and want to roll it out of the pan to brown the bottom a little more. Allow to cool to barely warm, or it will crush itself when you try to cut it. Freezes well.

Combinations:

Cinnamon sugar paste, raisins, pecans or walnuts: a standard fancy breakfast bread here

Dried fruit of choice, almond paste, chocolate: Babka esque

Double the dried fruit (must add prunes / figs if you're being super traditional) and nuts, knead it in: a version of schnitzbrot

Make the dough in rolls fill with cinnamon and sugar or the sugar paste, put cinnamon and sugar paste in the bottom, add pecans to taste inside and below: Pecan sticky buns. Be careful when you remove from the pan because the sugar + butter will make lava like cinnamon caramel.

Sugar cubes and cinnamon = A fast version of Danish sugar lump bread.

I have got to admit that these light were better than I had expected. They are very low profile to lessen your tripping over them which I like. The outer non-slip polycarbonate housing is super strong and can handle up to a car or truck driving over the top of them and survive, Impressive. Very beefy.The lights can be mounted by screwing them to your Trex or wooden deck (with included screws), stuck into the ground or grass with the included plastic stakes that have like a 3M-like HD sticker on the end of the stake, by using some clear silicone adhesive (not included) or just laying them onto the surface by itself for temporary use.A note if more permanently mounting them by silicone, I recommend using only a small maybe dime size daub so if you need to remove or replace it it will not be as hard. I did not use the stakes but I fear that with rain, regular sprinkler watering and hot summer heat that the stickers will not hold up long term.BRIGHTNESS. The company says these are “super bright”, aah not super bright in real life but that is OK. The light provided is just enough provide subdued light for a driveway, pool skirting or pathway. The color is slightly between warm light and standard white light, in my opinion, just right. These would be pretty cool for driveway parking spot lights, too. If you put them in the middle of your driveway it will look like you have a plane landing strip!These lights can be mounting either horizontally or vertically like on a wall next to the steps or fence next along a walkway.BURN-TIME: Each light has a solar panel under the outer housing that recharges up its internal lithium battery (non-replaceable). The key to these and ALL solar operated lights is getting DIRECT sunshine and the time absorption time of the daylight (winter burn-time is less than summer time). The longer the direct sunshine (4-8 hours) the longer the burn-time you will get. They will charge with indirect sunlight but just not burn very long so choose your mounting location carefully so get the most direct sunshine each day and each season.OK, SO DID I LIKE THESE SOLAR PATHWAY LIGHTS? Yep, I sure did. They add some class to front your home or backyard pathways, driveways, pool decks and backyard decor. I think I will buy a few extra sets now for my home and around my pool.
