Coming here to rant because this is generally the place to do it.
I'm enjoying Strange New Worlds, I really am! It's got a lot of things going for it and is by far the best of the new Treks.
Here's my problem: the whole Spock/Chapel thing.
First, she's engaged. I know the writers have said they haven't forgot about Roger Corby. I have trouble wondering why she was so upset about Andrea, feels like a double standard.
Second, Spock was always portrayed as having no real interest in her. She was in love with him but it was unrequited. Even under the effect of an alien virus he showed no interest ("The Naked Time"), even under extreme duress there was nothing ("Plato's Stepchildren"). If there was anyone on that crew you could believe he was romantically attracted to, it's Uhura. Which brings me to my third point...
What happened to Spock/Uhura??? They absolutely had a spark in TOS (see "The Man Trap" and "Charlie X" for starters), I mean, the first time Spock saw Uhura after sharing his mind with a Medusan he started quoting love poetry! And besides all that there's the matter of the Kelvin-verse.
Y'all, they were together for around 10 years in the Kelvin-verse. This is an alternate reality, you say? Was it really that alternate when they first got together at the Academy before they met Kirk? Aren't they basically the same characters up to that point?
If two people work really, really well in one universe doesn't that technically mean they would in at least the majority of universes?
What I would have preferred SNW to do is to dig into Chapel's search for Corby, show her journey to such an extent that "What Are Little Girls Made Of" feels like a payoff, a completion to her arc.
And explore Spock/Uhura! I always thought it would be hilarious if her flirting in "The Man Trap" was echoing earlier conversations.
"Why don't you tell me I'm an attractive young lady?"Sounds like a Spock pick-up line to me! "Or ask me if I've ever been in love", he already knows she has. It's just... right there. It's completely beyond me why it's ignored. If Spock is going to have a love interest make it make sense!
Some people think sth happened between Chapel and Spock because of a TOS episode when he throw a soup and snapped at Chapel and later. I never seen that episode so no idea. But the fact he cried was never explained and it's possible that the writers try to fixe plot hole from TOS. So Spock is gonna to cheat on T'Pring with Chapel. In TOS that why it will end up in a divorce and he's distant with Chapel. But what that mean for Nyota Uhura? They'll never date. And two WoC are being throw away.
so confession time.
I've never actually finished TOS. I've watched all the star trek movies but not the original run of the show. like don't get me wrong I love Spock and Kirk but I'm really only in it for Uhura and Sulu. but we don't get storylines for them in TOS. and like believe me I know there's problems with the reboot movies but I'm watching them for Uhura and her relationship with Spock.
Like with strange new worlds I love Celia and I'm really disappointed that they chose to bring back both T'Pring and Chapel's history with Spock.
BUT!!! I'm playing the long game with strange new worlds honestly. I love slow burns and I honestly love the rapport they have with Uhura and Spock in this show. (I kinda had a problem with student Uhura/professor spock like the dynamics could have been better you know?)
Like your feelings are valid that they are throwing away 2 woc but its a great show and there's been some great stuff being done with Uhura's backstory. And I like honestly I hopped on this show late (I'm still on the first season lol episode 7) but I really think there's a chance that Spock is crying about something else and the Chapel is the one carrying a torch for Spock.
anyways feel free to fight me on this but I will forever ship Spuhura!!!!

“I just can’t imagine him being your type.”
Nyota rolls her eyes. She can hear the smugness behind the remark, sees the smirk upon the other woman’s face. She purses her lips as she considers the newly transferred officer. “And why would you assume otherwise?”
From the expression on the woman’s face, it’s not the response she expected. Of course it isn’t, because somehow there is always a plethora of adults who haven’t outgrown their high school mindsets.
Nyota waits, narrowing her eyes and taking a long drink, cooly resting the glass back on the table. She maintains eye contact, almost daring this impudent ensign to make one negative remark about her or Spock.
I was browsing Pinterest when I saw this and felt immediately that I had to paint my OTP in the exact pose. The people closest to me know I’m completely obsessed with Spock and Lt. Uhura and have been since I was a child. As someone raised on Star Trek (specifically the Original Series) who also happens to be a Black woman, Star Trek represents the promise of a utopian future that exists because of the inherent value of people of color. I have eight billion things to say about how important the original intention for Spock and Uhura to be a romantic couple is, but suffice it to say I love them. The title of this piece comes from a song I always associate with these two, Childish Gambino's "Me and Your Mama". Painted with Clip Studio Paint in one session because I have no impulse control.
