When did I first discover Escaflowne?
I first watched Escaflowne around 2000, back when I was in grade school. It stood out to me because at the time, all the other anime shows were dubbed in Tagalog, but for some reason, Escaflowne was broadcast in English.
Tumblr media
The local network at the time had this insane programming block where they would air a different anime show every weeknight, and Escaflowne would air on Friday nights. I was a high achieving schoolgirl at the time with a strict mom, and my TV hours were strictly regimented. But on Fridays, I could relax!
I remember the first episode immediately hooking me. Even back then, I could tell that the show was so tightly plotted because I wouldn’t even realize that the half-hour block was up. The first few episodes had really well-executed cliffhangers too. I couldn’t wait until Fridays and would rush home from school every week.
Pre-teen me would get really into it. Like REALLY into it - I would spend the commercial breaks writing down names of the new characters and countries just so I could remember. Also a lot of squealing in my room. I was in full-on fan-girl mode. I fangirled with my friends at school too.
Sadly, I didn't even finish the series upon first watching. I was so upset when it got cancelled/the timeslot changed/??? for some reason. This was way back in the early 2000s and there was no YouTube, the internet barely had anything. I remember being so upset that I was indignantly saying I would literally WRITE to the broadcast network that cancelled it and demand that they put it back on the air (LOL). I don’t remember when they stopped but I think I stopped just before Hitomi left Gaea the first time.
Some time later, I found an anime store (in SM North Edsa) and they had bootleg copies of the series on VHS tapes. I eventually got to finish the series. I still love the ending. (Thoughts on that incoming in another post)
In 2016 it got Kickstarted for a re-dub and I’m so glad that 20+ years on, enough people still hold it very dear to their hearts and showed support! I joined in on that campaign too, of course.
Nowadays I rewatch the show every few years or so. And I make sure to have at least 2 copies stored in different devices at all times.

This schedule is from March 2004, sourced from the Sky TV Guide via the Wayback Machine. I was only able to view the Thursday schedule as opposed to the entire week, which is why it’s been formatted differently. As you can easily tell, there was a serious lack of variety during this specific day. I don’t know if it was because of the Easter Holidays or just Thursdays specifically but assuming it to be the overall 5-day weekly schedule, excluding weekends, it doesn’t look very good.
Firstly, not enough variety. The schedule is too repetitive and reeks of 2013 Cartoon Network UK. The same set of shows repeated multiple times in a noticeable pattern throughout the day, even sneaking past 9pm, and that side of the schedule isn’t much better, as once again, Gadget Boy takes up 3 hours for no reason along with several shows that were already broadcast plenty throughout the day. Aside from those, you have some odd choices like Fat Dog Mendoza and Mike Lu & Ogg, both of which were likely removed the following year.
Strange to not see a single Billy & Mandy rerun, though assuming that Grim & Evil had already finished its run in the UK by then, with Billy & Mandy itself either airing on weekends or still awaiting its UK premiere knowing how long some of their shows take to get here. Also very weird to see that many airings for Robot Jones on a single day, though knowing CN’s general treatment of such shows, it’s safe to assume they were just burning the whole series off as fast as they could.
CN UK must have really LOVED Dexter’s Lab in the early 2000s. The show’s airtime was easily exceeding Ed Edd & Eddy’s, which I always thought to be the more popular cartoon. Maybe it was a UK thing? It’s also funny how much KND I’m seeing, as that got pushed to the side in its later years (2007-2009) in favour of other shows, including Ed Edd & Eddy.
I believe that’s about it lol

Someday, out of pure saltiness, I will make up a calendar of TTS air dates and times so we’ll have a visual representation of how much the company screwed the series over in terms of airing.

It's ALL Coming Back To Us
An acquaintance shared a snippet of a schedule from Boomerang, and I was amazed at what I saw.
Tumblr media
Am I seeing things? Reruns of old CN/Hanna Barbera shows? No original programs that belong on Cartoon Network? An ACTUAL episode of Top Cat?!
I'm honestly surprised. Boomerang is getting their groove back! They must have realized that people watch it only for the old shows and not for some more recent programs that'll get canceled after another season.
This one is a bit old. I first saw it while I was getting ready to leave the library after working on some artwork. But from the new schedules I saw, they also have reruns of The Powerpuff Girls (the old one. Not that MONSTROSITY of a reboot.), the original Ben 10, and even a few Popeye marathons in addition to the obligatory Tom and Jerry/Looney Tunes ones.
Their still missing a few shows. (Some more Hanna Barbera cartoons and shows like Swat Kats would be nice additions. Programs like Clarence, Uncle Grandpa, and Regular Show would also make for great additions to the Boomerang line-up since CN doesn't air those shows anymore.) But aside from that, Boomerang is watchable again!
I'd never thought I'd see the day.

I got into the series later then some other fans and I have heard it said that ratings for the show went down after season 1and continued to decline. Is this true? I guess this surprises me because I greatly enjoyed this series. Is there a reason as to why the ratings dropped in later seasons?
I think I got psychic damage from reliving this and writing this replay. XD
It is true, and, as far as I know, it was a self-perpetuating problem on Disney's part.
Now, I'm no expert in ratings. I don't know where to go to look for them, nor do I know how to interpret what I'm seeing when I am shown ratings (last time I saw a ratings number for TTS, my only thought was, 'Okay, but that looks like a lot of people are watching it?'). But here is how it appeared to me, a layman, as I was watching the series air.
"Tangled: Before Ever After" was a Disney Channel Original Movie (DCOM for short), and was given a lot of fanfare by Disney Channel. It was aired in a prime time slot, on a Friday night, and ran multiple times over its premier weekend. The series started in earnest two weeks later, also on Friday evening. Disney aired reruns, made merch, promoted it, genuinely tried to get people to watch it. There were promotional posters up at the theme parks to drum up interest. There was a doll set and a Christmas ornament made to promote Queen For a Day, and after the episode aired, it was released on DVD. Tangled got its own panel at D23 Expo in 2017.
But from what I understand from what people who worked on the series told me, DTVA has a tendency to promote the newest, shiniest thing for a season, then turn its attention to the next big thing. In Tangled's case, the next big thing was DuckTales, which aired almost exactly five months after Tangled did. I guess numbers weren't quite where Disney wanted them to be, because despite pre-approving three seasons, they slowed on making merch after S1. I mean, a few things still came through for S2. There's the LEGO set of the caravan, for example. It seemed to me that they didn't catch the audience they were aiming for (girls from 6 - 12) and they didn't know what to do with the audience they grabbed (teens and young adults).
So, they stopped promoting it, stopped making merch of it (and what little merch was made wasn't aimed at the viewing demographic, but the target one), and what shot itself the most in the foot, they started changing the day and time they were airing it, pushing it more and more into time slots aimed at the target demographic instead of leaning into the curve and switching their focus to the demographic actually watching. New episodes aired on a moving target. If you weren't already keyed in to when they were coming out, it was difficult to figure out when it would be, because it kept changing. I had crew members tell me that they only way they knew when the episodes were airing was because of my blog. Sometimes they ran reruns, most of the time they did not. And when they did run reruns, it was in the middle of the day, when the only kids home were kindergarten-age. And when the series was on hiatus, reruns didn't air at all. This was no way to grab new viewers who might just happen to stumble upon it. At this point, the only way to watch it was to do so deliberately, either getting your butt up at 7 am on a Sunday or turning on DisneyNOW or your cable provider to watch it as soon as it dropped at midnight. The fandom had viewing parties, for goodness sake.
And then, Disney decided to blitz through the last part of S2 (after a six-month hiatus) and the first part of S3 in bomb format. The last part of S2 aired two episodes back to back, once a week. The first part of S3 aired them one right after another on consecutive week days before hitting us with a three month hiatus. Disney seemed to be done with it, and just running out the clock until the series was over. As a fan, it was an exhausting schedule to keep up. Even when it returned to its one episode a week format, it still aired first thing in the morning on Sundays.
It can't have helped that this aired when it did, societally-speaking. Things were rapidly moving from being aired on TV to being launched exclusively online. They were really trying to promote the use of DisneyNOW, and in the middle of Tangled's run, Disney+ launched.
Anyway, TL;DR, Disney didn't like the numbers it was showing by the end of S1, and so they stopped promoting it and started changing what day and time the episodes aired, which can't have helped those numbers. Instead of trying to make it better, they gave it up as a lost cause and made it worse.
