I am thinking about 90s!Steve Harrington on this fine Sunday evening.

The year is 1990. Steve has been out of Hawkins for quite some time. Well, maybe not that long. But, for as long as they spent fighting the upside down, he's spent the same amount of time trying to grasp what the hell happened during those four years.

He flicks his TV on after a day of being out - maybe he just came back from class - maybe he has a grocery bags threatening to spill out of his arms - regardless, he somehow fumbles his way to the kitchen, stepping on the remote on his way in. Of course, Robin left the place a sty on her way out for the weekend.

The sound of MTV fills the room, startling Steve out of his head. He dumps the bags on the counter, begins retracing his steps through the apartment to find the remote. He finds it, along with the trail of mud he tracked in from the October rain, reminding him to kick off his shoes.

He finally makes his way in front of the TV, barely registering that the announcer introduced this song as a new George Michael song.

His finger hovers over the button of the remote now, because, it's George Michael. The earring in his left all but started tingling as he reached up to brush it. The lyrics coming at him hard and fast -

Heaven knows I was just a young boy Didn't know what I wanted to be Didn't know what I wanted to be

He fully takes a seat in front of the TV, not having pressed his face this close to the static screen since he was a young teenager, memories of watching Wham!'s old music videos with this familiar rush, what he now knows as a blush watching George Michael sing and dance. But this time it feels different. This time, the words are too stupidly real to him. He thinks if he watches the screen closer he'll get a better grasp of them.

Brand new clothes and A big fat place On your rock and roll TV But today the way I play the game is not the same No way Think I'm gonna get myself happy

And Steve convinces himself that George is singing directly to him.

There's something Deep inside of me There's someone Else I've got to be Take back your Picture in a frame

Steve starts crying right there, his face still only inches away from the TV.

All we have to do now Is take these lies and Make them true somehow All we have to see Is that I don't belong to you And you don't Belong to me yeah, yeah

He starts singing along by the third chorus, fully embracing the tears streaking his cheeks.

Freedom Freedom Freedom You've gotta give For what you take

Thinking about his own freedom. The way he took his own freedom into his own hands. Packing everything he could fit into the Beamer and just driving to a new place, starting over after spending so many years just surviving. Realizing that he's spent the last four years living. That he can be who he wants, love who he wants, and just be free.
