Cyborg, the Greatest Titan

(Titans (2023) #7- Cyborg shows why no one can bring him down)

So there was once a seemingly innocuous question asked on Titans Twitter:

Though some used it to prop up their faves, it turned into a serious and big discussion: Who is the Greatest Titan, epitomizing what it means to be a Titan the most?

There were a variety of answers, majority being one of Dick, Donna, Starfire, Raven, or even Wally. But what I noticed was the surprising lack of one answer: Cyborg.

One of the most popular Titans, whom DC clearly sees as one of the Titans Trinity (upper right corner):

Whose removal from Titans lore caused a massive fan uproar, yet among Titans Twitter, probably the most dedicated of Titan fans, Cyborg's name was barely mentioned as a candidate to be the Greatest Titan:

A Family of Teenagers that not only help each other in the struggles of being a hero but also the struggles of being an adolescent, having turbulent emotions in a turbulent world

(Dark Nights: Death Metal: The Last Stories of the DC Universe: Together - Donna talking about how much the Titans had it tougher than the League because they had been facing Justice-League-level problems since they were kids, and yet every time still came out on top)

And who has committed to this mission more than Cyborg?

Victor who fought for the team when everyone including past leaders like Dick and Donna walked away:

Stubbornly keeping Titans alive when everyone else wouldn't, allowing Titans to reach their greatest potential: a global network so any teen of any generation can find a home

A man who because the Titans gained utter defiance in who he is, saving not only himself from despair, but also became devoted to giving other teens that same courage, inspiring them to show that they are not freaks nor they are ever alone, thus changing so many lives (go to 2:38 for the start of the iconic speech, but I recommend starting at 2:17)

Tools of the Trade Part 1: Nightwing's Costume

Nightwing has used six main suits over the years, as well as several up-armored variants. In general, his suit is a tri-layered, insulated, Nomex/Kevlar body armor. Most versions can heat up in the cold, resist bullets, resist flames, and electrocute enemies. Certain versions of the suit also included a glider function, such as the second blue/gold suit worn in the 1990s. The third version, which was blue/black and included the fan-favorite finger stripes, was made of "a controlled photo-chromic fabric" which could shift the colors of the suit from blue to navy for increased stealth capabilities. Nightwing also possesses up-armored variants of his traditional black/blue suits, seen in situations when he was facing threats of immense power, such as in Titans/Young Justice: Graduation Day, and Convergence: Nightwing/Oracle. In a potential future in Nightwing: The New Order, Nightwing also designed a more high-tech, armored version of his suit. Most versions of his suit, including the original, the fingerstripes, and the New 52, use gauntlets to carry Nightwing's gadgets.

In the two DC events Dark Knights: Metal and Dark Knights: Death Metal, Nightwing wore specialized suits. The first was a thermal armor designed by Batman, which aided Nightwing in battling Mr. Freeze. The second was a Death Metal variant of Nightwing's armor, used to blend into the twisted version of Earth created by the Batman Who Laughs.

The Rebirth/Infinite Frontier era version of the suit is reminiscent of his black/blue fingerstripes suit, but no longer uses gauntlets to store his gadgets. This incarnation includes an in-suit defibrillator, as well as a small backpack for Nightwing's sticks and other gadgets. The Fingerstripes 2.0 suit is similar, but has been upgraded by Mr. Terrific to be thinner and have more resistance to bullets and knives, as well as an in-suit glider.

In the Batman Beyond timeline, though Dick was no longer active as Nightwing, he did use a futuristic black and blue biker suit on occasion, which resembled his old Nightwing gear.

During DC's Future State event, which explored a possible future in which Gotham has become a police state, Dick has become the leader of the resistance fighters, and his suit reflects that. It retains the classic elements, but is more armored and cobbled together.

Future State: Nightwing #1

Later on in the Future State timeline, Dick escaped Gotham and joined his old Titans friends. During this time, the years of trauma, from the death of Batman to the collapse of the Titans Academy weighed heavily on Dick, and he switched to a modified version of his second blue and gold Nightwing suit, which included a combination of his and Deathstroke's mask, as well as a gun.

Future State: Teen Titans #1

The Mask:

Nightwing's domino mask attaches to his face with an adhesive, and has a built in radio, thermal vision, self destruct, night vision, and build in protective lenses. The mask of the red New 52 version of his suit could also pair with a syringe in his glove to perform chemical analysis.

In the event his mask was removed or lost, Nightwing also built a self destruct feature into it, and carried a spare in the lining of his suit, a habit he picked up as Robin.

The Gauntlets:

Nightwing's gauntlets are a key part of his suit, replacing the need for a utility belt. Contained within them are many gadgets and tools, including a portable computer, communicator, GPS, 100,000 volt taser, laser cutter, rope launcher, and self destruct charges.

Last song: When I first saw the tag post it was “I wanna know what love is” by Foreigner (shoutout to my baby boy Nova <3 it was on his playlist), but between seeing the tag and actually making this post I did watch that Bad Apple r/place video so technically it’s Bad Apple. I just felt that was too obvious.

Currently watching: Ummm… things I’m in the middle of… My Adventures With Superman. Gotham, technically (we dropped off somewhere in season 2 like a year ago), and also CW Supergirl, technically (I’m only about 4 episodes in and it’s been months).

And then my anime Tuesday watch party rotates through a whole list of them so I am in the middle of uh… Komi Can’t Communicate, To Your Eternity, Bocchi the Rock, Kaguya-sama Love Is War, Natsume Yuujinchou, Witch From Mercury, and Blood Blockade Battlefront.

Also Miraculous Ladybug. Back to watching that just bc I was too happy I guess and needed something to scream about.

Currently reading: I just finished both This Is How You Lose The Time War and The House in the Cerulean Sea (I liked both, would recommend) but haven’t picked up anything new on the novel front, though next up is These Are Not The Trinity Papers. Because it's sitting on my desk now so I guess it's next.

Comics front I’m still working my way through Young Justice ‘98 and Tim’s Robin run, plus currently keeping up with Poison Ivy, City Boy, Spirit World, Green Arrow, and Batman and Detective Comics. And SMOT. And actually haven't read the last TDR, which I was keeping up with (do not recommend, unless you're like me and just want to look at pretty pictures of Tim; it's not bad per se just so deeply middling). I’ve gotten a couple months behind because I’ve been busy with new job and travel and friends… OH ALSO I did just pick up Batman/Superman World's Finest Vol 1. from the library, so that's also On The List (the list is so god damn long).

Current obsession: DC for sure, for better or for worse. I’m sure you couldn’t tell from my other answers on this. (I didn’t even mention the DC video games I’ve been playing...)

Traditional Ways to Celebrate a Scottish Yule/Christmas

In this post I want to talk about traditional Yule practices in Scotland, but it may be noticed that there is little to no talk about going to church at all. This is not an intentional slight against the church, but simply that my sources don’t tend to mention it as part of the celebrations. Instead, most the traditions mention time with family and friends, as much and as grand of food as one could afford, and traditions to fight darkness/evil spirits.

All that may seem strange, but many of the traditions we do today were also done in Scotland. For example, the very idea of the Christmas Card is said to have been invented in Edinburgh.

1. BREAKFAST

Today, some people have a tradition of a big breakfast on Christmas/Yule day, and that is not a new custom.

"The breakfast on Christmas morning was the best that could be afforded–milk porridge, creamy milk, butter, fish, ect." Notes on The Folk-Lore of the North-East of Scotland By Walter Gregor [1881]

Some people would have mutton, beef, or goose, while others ate a customary dish. People would typically just eat what they could afford, but a common dish was Sowens.

“The other was a cake the leaven of which had been moistened with water poured off “sowens,” which gave it a peculiar acid flavour. It was essential that both these kinds of cake should be baked during the night—at any rate, before daybreak on Christmas morning.” A History of Moray and Nairn by Charles J. Rampini (1897)

The women of the house would typically make it without any men around, then distribute it to the household while they were in bed (breakfast in bed).

Nine o’clock was an orthodox hour in Carglen , and at nine o’clock it was the orthodox rule to retire to rest , even on the eve of Yule . That is to say , the men folks retired ; the women were busy with the “ sowens ” -mysterious decoction ! So we all went to bed till midnight , and at the mystic hour of twelve the female folks awoke us , and deluged our stomachs till they could hold no more with the sweet , vile “ sowens . ” The Folks O’ Carglen, Or, Life in the North Book by Alexander Gordon (1891)

2. FIRST-FOOTING

Just like on Hogmanay, some places practiced “first footing,” where it was considered lucky if a dark haired person was first to enter.

To start, a person would open the door, and be lucky for doing so. This was called “letting in Yule.”

"In some parts of Scotland , he who first opens the door on Yule Day expects to prosper more than any other member of the family during the future year because , as the vulgar express it , “ He lets in yule . Then comes the superstition regarding hair. If the first person to enter your home had dark hair, that was also lucky.

3. NEW CLOTHES

It was often considered necessary to wear new clothes on Christmas day, and those without it would be rudely ridiculed.

Every means was used to have some piece of new dress, no matter how small. The one who was so unfortunate as to be without such a piece of dress bore the name of “Yeel’s jaad. Notes on The Folk-Lore of the North-East of Scotland By Walter Gregor [1881]

4. DANCING

Balls were one way to celebrate, and some were so much fun, that they could go on until daylight. Most commonly, these were held in barns.

"Balls were among the amusements of the season. A barn, conveniently situated for the district and sufficiently large, was selected. It was swept as clean as possible, and filled up with seats round the wall–deals supported on all manner of supports–stones, turf, cart-wheel bushes, bags filled with grain, &c. A plentiful supply of eaten cakes, biscuits, cheese, fish, ale, porter, whisky, and sugar for the toddy, was got, and committed to the care, of a few of the “hehds o’ the ball.” Notes on The Folk-Lore of the North-East of Scotland By Walter Gregor [1881]

5. GAMES

After breakfast, games would be played. This could be anything from Shinty, to a shooting contest, to some other type of game.

"As the day advances , those minor amusements are terminated at the report of the gun , or the rattle of the ball – clubs – the gun inviting the marksman to the ” Kiavamuchd , ” or prize – shoot ing , and the latter to ” Luchd – vouil , ” or the ball combatants – both the principal sports of the day ." 6. SAINING

Saining is the process of cleansing something or bestowing protection from the powers of evil. These could fight fairies, witchcraft, the evil eye, or bad luck.

On the 24th, fairies and trows in particular were said to be out in full force, so extra protection was in order.

In the case of Christmas, Juniper smoke may be used.

"A fire was kindled in each byre on Christmas morning, and in parts of the country the byres were purified by burning juniper in them." Notes on The Folk-Lore of the North-East of Scotland By Walter Gregor [1881]

As well as that, if you did not want something to go missing, it was recommended to put it away.

7. DINNER

Dinner traditions would change depending on your wealth and location.

"To have flesh for the Yeel dinner great exertion was made, as it was thought that the cattle would not thrive during the year if it was awanting. It was a custom not to sit down to the great dinner of the year till after sunset. The Yeel kebback was cut by the gueedeman. During the whole time of Yeel the diet was more generous than at other times." Notes on The Folk-Lore of the North-East of Scotland By Walter Gregor [1881]

Sometimes, the main dish would be dumplings or fish.

“Yeel” fish was bought. Sometimes this was done from fisherwomen who carried them over the country. Sometimes those in better circumstances went to the fishing villages, and bought the fish from the boat, carried them home, cured them, and smoked them on the kiln. Even the cattle and sheep would get extra sheaf on Yule and New Year.

8. STORIES

Stories were a must, and sometimes that involved heading out to collect a good (old) storyteller.

This errand , on which we suppose the gude man and his assistants employed , is the procuring of Calluch Nollic , or Christmas Old Wife , an indispensable requisite for this occasion , and it will perhaps puzzle some of our readers , to guess the purpose for which the good woman is wanted . Interestingly, other places had story traditions as well. For example, ghost stories were a common Christmas pass-time for the Victorians.

This is tumblr. This is my personal little space where I can gush about my interests. I can't do that on social media like FB, Insta, or Twitter without it feeling like a popularity contest or a great debate.
