Thesis Diary #37
New update on the thesis. I have finished reading and rereading the first chapter and I wrote the professor an email sending it. I also had a few questions to ask her so I did all in one go. I am a bit nervous but also excited to hear what she says about it, mostly because it will give me a lot of help with the rest of my work, as I will have a clearer idea of what she wants me to do. Aside from this writing related things today I did a bit of organization of the material I gathered yesterday at the archive. I have divided the photos in chuncks, and I have more or less decided which parts I will start working on first. Tomorrow I plan on rereading and reorganizing the notes I took while I was at the archive, and after that I will actually start working on those documents.
18/30 days of self care
Read first thing in the morning (currently reading Once Upon An Ice Age by Roy Lewis)
Had my much needed monthly therapy session
Organized my thesis work for the next few weeks
tranquilstudy's studying challenge // day 22
What are three things you want right now?
Some peace of mind
More confidence
On a much more material side of things, I want an exciting pile of new books for the summer months. Lately nothing on my unread shelves seems exciting for me.

Summer Productivity Challenge 2/29 ⟡  6.17.22
Happy Friday/Jumuah Mubarak!
Today we had a talk on teaching and one thing that stuck with me was when the speaker said that kids see their teachers as ‘school parents’, so if their parents alienate them at home, they may subconsciously seek out their teachers to fulfill some of those needs (like praise, validation etc). If they feel alienated by their teachers as well, then they might turn to the wrong crowds or methods to get those needs met. Like I knew there was a lot of responsibility in teaching but hearing something like that really makes you think!

july 3 | got my wisdom tooth extraction consult done, and the dentist at this place literally calmed my nerves from 100 to 0. Well, maybe not 0, but around 20. He was really chill and very relaxed and said there’d be no problems getting them taken out under IV sedation. I’m still nervous but he definitely put me at ease a bit.
tranquil’s summer challenge 🚶‍♀️
Today, I’m grateful for dental insurance 😭
Day Eighteen: Are you planning on taking any trips or vacations soon? Show some pictures of your last vacation!
Goodness, I don’t even know if I have pictures from my last vacation. It was in 2019! On Vancouver Island. I have no plans on travelling anytime soon, but next year assuming Covid doesn’t get worse I may be headed to Austria to tour with my choir 🎵

Day Three: Do you have any tips for people sending professional emails... ?
• Create a signature block for your emails. Especially if you're under a certain institution or company. Helps save a lot of time when writing emails, and will keep them professional and corteous.
• Email within business hours, or schedule your emails to send within/at a certain time (ex.: 9am, Monday). Respect poeple's time off to rest after a full work day!
Day Four: List five things that make you happy.
• Rainy evenings and soft blankets
• Hot, black coffee
• Fragrant book pages
• Sunny-side up with bacon and garlic fried rice
• Attaining above-expected grades/results

Day One: A brief introduction of yourself! Where are you at in life at the start of this challenge? How are you feeling? Are you happy with the way your life is right now? What do you hope to gain from doing this challenge? They say that starting is the hardest part. Do you find starting this challenge difficult?
Hi! My name is Kay. I recently graduated this May and am prepping to begin a DNP program fall of 2024. I have a kitty and live in NYC currently. I’ve been back in the states for (almost) two years and keep having to ground myself because I want to jet any chance I get. In a few weeks I’m headed to Honduras to scuba dive and gain certification. Hopefully it’ll ease the travel bug.
I’m grateful for where I’m at. I attend births, serve families in the most intimate moments postpartum, I live in a city that creates and dreams more than anywhere I’ve ever been. I’m very grateful. I think I sometimes struggle with feeling like I’m getting older and always studying, there’s always the next leg of my training and I try to release the need to rush this stage of life.
I hope this challenge will give me time to reflect at pointed times, and that it’ll help me find some direction for this fall!
Pics of my lottery win! I won tickets to SIX and had front row seats, frozen drinks and gummies. Truly the luckiest.

2022 • tranquil studyblr challenge (ft. some images to summarize what i’ve been up to lately)
hello! i’m starting very late in the game cause i somehow missed everything else so I wanted to go over the day 1 prompt before finishing with the last ten to give an intro and where i’m at :)
my name is jay and i’ve had this blog for a while but i still haven’t interacted much with the community! starting this challenge I am waiting to hear back from job applications and waiting for my summer volunteer positions to start up. really, there’s a lot of empty space in my days right now that I am only filling idly and I would like to lean into the last of this challenge to add some purposeful interaction/reflection.
today i am grateful for my body even when it aches like it is right now <3

06 / 16 | D-77
since there's 77 days / 11 full weeks left until sept. 1st i guess i'll just frankenstein together some #dop and studyblr challenges haha let's go ~
( @wecandoit’s #30dop )
I'll be studying a creative media and technologies / game design type thing ! I'm not a gamer but it's the one thing that I feel will string together all my hobbies and passions ( architecture / composition / ling / psych / pretty things / studying people / etc / etc ) + the skills I want to learn ( design / programming / tech ) in an engaging way !
Tumblr media
( @tranquilstudy's #tranquilstudychallenge )
It is well with my soul and I'm looking forward to finally starting something new soon ! I had to bridge a couple big changes in life but I'm finally settling in a bit :-) now all that's left is prepare for school to start.
Before it does though, I hope to get into a solid study and workout mindset, as well as brush up a few skills that will be helpful at uni, like setting up a portfolio and such !!

What do you hope to gain from doing this challenge? They say that starting is the hardest part. Do you find starting this challenge difficult?
Today was my last uni final and now the realization that I’m graduating next week is starting to sink in. Somehow I can’t seem to get in that celebratory mood. I plan to study for the residency admission exam in November and to finish my thesis so I mainly joined this challenge to stay consistent.
Day Two: It’s pride month! How do you identify, gender-wise and sexuality-wise, if you’re comfortable sharing? Do you do anything for pride?
I identify as asexual with she/her pronouns. I don’t do anything grand to celebrate; instead I paint my nails in the ace flag colors. : )

30 Days of Productivity Challenge
Day 8: Do you read? If you do, what are your favorites?
I *love* to read! When I was younger, people would compare me to Roald Dahl's character Matilda because of how much I read.
My English favorites tend to revolve around theology (not a conscious choice). The favorite I've had for the longest is The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky. A new favorite of mine is Chaim Potok's book The Chosen. It's about two Jewish boys growing up in Brooklyn. It's been a long time since I was last enraptured with a book like I was with The Chosen.
I don't have too much experience reading in other languages. In Spanish, I am reading children's books, but I inherited a copy of Los Sueños de Don Bosco from my grandmother that I want to read soon. In Hebrew, my boyfriend has helped me read a bit of Pirkei Avot (the Sayings of the Fathers), which I enjoy.
Tranquilstudy's Summer Challenge
Day Seventeen:  Spring is in the air this time of year! Share some photos of nature and tell us your favourite types of plants and flowers!
Alas, I have no nature photos! But I can tell you about my favorite flowers. My favorite flowers are roses and carnations. If I ever have another tattoo done, I want to get a pink carnation and a red rose.
Today's Tasks
[X] Work
[X] Duolingo Spanish (History -> Level 3 to Level 5)
[X] Exercise
Listen to more of Miracles
[X] Read more of The Promise

29.6 2022
Still alive, even if it's too hot to exist. I was working the whole of last week, did a weaving workshop at a little afternoon for kids, a Day with Imperial Romans, it was pretty fun. And went to opera yesterday with my roommate! It was amazing, I haven't been to one in years and it was a balm for my soul, amazing scene, truly beautiful, great costumes (especially Desdemona) and the music.... goosebumps. Especially at the beginning, it was so dramatic. Loved it.
Left - shortcute through the train station; middle - cardwoven bracelet, I'm quite proud of it actually; right - poster for the upcoming opera season.
Currently reading: The Sorceress by Michael Scott (love how it took me a week to get through the first book but then I inhaled the second and half of the third book in one day)
Catch up after the cut🌱
Day Eight: What would you say to people that are stuck in a difficult or toxic relationship, be it friendships, romantic relationships or relationships with family?
I'd say get out, but that's not so easy. So probably just that it will be better, they are better off without them and that time and distance help a lot.
Day Nine: What do you do when you're sad? What makes you feel better during difficult or trying times?
Cry. Write poetry. Sleep. Unless I need to be productive, then I just play aggressive music, have a smoke, turn a bit bitter and get shit done. And then I cry and sleep.
Day Ten: Are you writing any papers/ doing thesis work/ journaling) general writing right now? If so, share what you've been working on! If not, share a picture of your favourite set of notes you've written.
I'm not writing anything as of rn, so here they come? I don't have a favourite set of notes, but I do like these:
Tumblr media
Day Eleven: What are you're biggest fears? What tips would you give someone trying to overcome their fears?
Being left alone (said the girl who moved out of her country and sees her family and close friends 2-3 times a year). I have a lot of fears, and I don't think I've overcome any of them, just learned how to ignore them. But having a safe space to try and overcome your fear helps. Knowing that even if you fail, it's all alright and you're safe, someone safe is with you and that you're not left alone. Having someone to talk you down does a lot, too.
Day Twelve: What reminds you of home? Share some pictures that you've taken around your city (or your favourite public place or coffee shop to study or read in your city).
Broth. Gardens. Books. Mom's cooking and hugs, dad's jokes and cigarette smell. Our cats. Grandma's perfume. That one watch. I find fields and remízky comforting.
(Picture by my friend when he visited during holidays; river behind our village)
Tumblr media
Day Thirteen: What happens when you come across a concept that you just can't wrap your head around in your studies? What tips do you have to make difficult concepts easier to grasp?
Take a break, make tea, open the window. Consult other notes, try to break it down into smaller concepts and try to find the system or parts that I already know/understand. Ask a friend/teacher for help. No, really, take consultations and ask your teachers.
Day Fourteen: Have you ever done a productivity challenge? Were you successful?
Nope and I don't think I will do one anytime soon. I know it just won't work for me and that's fine.

Thesis diary #35
It's been a while since I've done one of these. Today I finally finished writing the first chapter of my thesis, or at least the first draft. This first chapter is all about the storiography of the subject. I divided it in two halves, the first on the storiography of the general subject of witch hunts in europe, and the second half on what it has been written on the trial I am working on in my thesis. It's meant to be an introduction to the developments of the researches done in the various decades, and hopefully it will work as a sort of base in which my own work will be placed. I have yet to send it to the professor, because I want to re-read and maybe edit it a bit more in these next couple of days, but then I'll send it to her so that after reading something of mine for the first time she can give me directions and advices. This week I am also going to the archives again to check the documents and take some pictures of them so that I'll have a bit of work to do for the rest of the summer, and so that my thesis can finally take shape. I must say I overall enjoy the work, I like the research aspect, as it is really exciting for me, and I love the writing part aswell. As I have mentioned before this work is something that makes me anxious because it's important and years of exams have lead to this, but at the same time this is the type of job I really like doing, so I'm definitely enjoying the process. I was thinking of posting a few tips/useful things I realized while writing this first chapter.
15/30 days of self care
Read first thing in the morning (currently rereading The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien)
Reorganized all my notebooks (both university related and not), as well as some stationary
Took some time to watch a tv show and relax
tranquilstudy's studying challenge // day 19
What big achievements have you accomplished today?
I finished writing the first chapter of my thesis (or at least the first draft of it).

10/30 days of self care
Today I decided to do all the things I had been putting off due to anxiety. It was a great mix of productivity and self care because I now feel way better. I got an appointment to go to the archives again, and then I did a bit of research on how I am supposed to apply for my master's degree next year, since I am graduating when the school year will have started already. I also checked a couple of technical informations on how to formally request to graduate. I am really happy I got that out of my to do list, because now I have a few less anxiety inducing tasks. As soon as the courses will be published I also plan on creating a study plan for my first year, so that it will also be easier for me to plan what I have to do to finish my thesis in September and October. In the afternoon I went back to my normal tasks, and I continued writing the first chapter of my thesis. I also practiced Irish on duolingo and worked in my bullet journal a bit. Self care things I did today:
read first thing in the morning (finished reading Caravaggio by E. Anderle)
accomplished the tasks I was anxious to do
washed my hair and used an hair mask (while listenting to some music to put me in a good mood)
tranquilstudy's studyblr challenge // day 14
Have you ever done a productivity challenge? Were you successful?
I have! I did the 100 days of productivity challenge two or three times. Actually I started this blog with the intent of doing this type of challenge to motivate me, and it worked amazingly. I have been thinking about doing one again, but I opted to postpone it once I will start my new courses in autumn!

A couple of June spreads I made in my reading journal. ( I was thinking about making a whole post on my reading journal, would that be a good idea?)

19/30 days of self care
Today I worked in the morning, when I got home I was super tired and I decided that at least on my birthday I can avoid the plans I had made and just read and relax in the afternoon. And it's exactly what I did. I did my daily Irish practice on duolingo, but for the rest of the day I just slowed down and read. These past few days I have felt really exhausted for some reason, so taking an afternoon for myself was much needed.
tranquilstudy's studying challenge // day 23
Halloween isn’t that far away, you know. Have you read or watched any of the classic horror books or movies? What are your favourites or least favourites if you have?
Horror has probably become my favourite book genre in these past couple of years. I am not a huge fan of horror movies, as the type of horror I enjoy the most is more psychological based, jumpscares and gory scenes are not what I necessarily look for. I like a story that can scare you by using your own imagination (reason why I think The Magnus Archives podcast worked amazingly). I want to get to more classic horror novels, It by Stephen King has been on my tbr for years, but since it's a huge book I haven't read it yet. And I also want to read more horror that is not just King. I like him as a writer but the fact that in my local bookstory has only his stuff in the horror section bothers me so much. (If you have any good horror book recs I am all hears). The last horror book I read was Pet Sematary by King, and it was a huge let down. I currently put on hold the reading of House Of Leaves by M.Z. Danielewski, I was enjoying it but it's a book that requires more focus that I've had in the past month. I am really excited to read more horror stuff, and I think that I'll look for a couple of these books for the summer, so give me your best recs please.

13/30 days of self care
Today I wrote a lot for my thesis, I am almost done with the first draft of the first chapter. This activity occupied the majority of my day, but I still managed to practice Irish on duolingo, and read a bit. Self care things I did today:
Read first thing in the morning
Journaled

Spring is in the air this time of year! Share some photos of nature and tell us your favourite types of plants and flowers!
I cannot for the life of me pick a favourite plant or flower. I have a particular affinity for medical herbs, and in my garden I mostly plant those either to make herbal teas or to cook. But at the end of the day I adore trees, as well as flowers, there's something about them that brings peace to my soul. The picture of the lavender is from a trip I took last year, it was magical to be surrounded by these herbs and flowers.

6/30 days of self care
The writing of my thesis has officially started! I have just wrote a couple of pages, but I am still figuring things out. I feel like I'm on a good path though. In the afternoon I had to go out to run some errands with my mom, so I took half of the day off from studying. Self care things I did today:
Read first thing in the morning (currently rereading my comfort book: The Hobbit)
Went for a walk in the morning (the air was colder than expected, but I felt super energized after. I have been listening to the audiobook of The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman on my walks, it's insane how much I have forgotten about it with time)
I went to the bar with my dad before lunch (when he goes he always asks me if I want to join, and normally I decline to get more studying done, but I am happy I went for once)
tranquilstudy's studyblr challenge // day 10
Today I am grateful because I gathered (and ate) the first raspberry of the plant I got just a while back.
Are you writing any papers / doing thesis work / journaling / general writing right now? If so, share what you’ve been working on! If not, share a picture of your favourite set of notes you’ve written.
I am working on my thesis at the moment. I started my researches a couple of months ago, and I have just started writing yesterday. There's still a lot of work to be done, but I can only do one thing at the time. The topic of my thesis is a witch trial dated at the beginning of the XVIII century. I have been documenting my experience working on it on this blog, and I have tagged all the posts in which I talked about it in depth as #thesis diary for those who might be interested. I am very much excited for this project, because I adore historical work, and I do love writing, so although I am nervous because it's an important project I am also genuinely excited for it. (In the first picture you can see my set up for writing this morning).

23/30 days of self care
Today I continued working on the first set of documents I took pictures of at the archive, and believe it or not I am basically done with this first group of photos. I will conclude it tomorrow morning, and then start on the second set of pictures, which I feel like I could manage to be done with by the end of the week. I also heard from the professor, who asked me to have a meeting to discuss the first chapter of my thesis. So at the end of the week I'll have that, and it was perfect timing because I was already planning to take that day off to go out with my mom. I have been given some money to spend on books for my birthday so I cannot wait for it. Aside from this I did again quite a bit of reading, I have picked up House Of Leaves by M.Z. Danielewski again after almost a month of having it on hold. I think I've finally hit the pont of the book in which I am really interested to know how things will develop. I am more or less half way into it, and the more ambitious part of me would like to finish it by the end of the week. I am not sure if I can do it, but I surely can try. In the afternoon I have also practiced Irish on duolingo. Self care things I did today:
read first thing in the morning (and a lot during my study breaks)
took some time to draw (after such a long time I was really in the mood to do some drawing and I started a big illustration in my bullet journal for August)
tranquilstudy's studying challenge // day 27
Take some pictures studying outside in the sun!
The stuff I am working on at the moment is all on my tablet, so it is impossible for me to study outside, which is a nightmare, because I love studying in my garden. I am lucky because I do get a lot of natural light in my study, but the feeling of studying around my plants is unbeatable.
