There's a genuine terror for a certain percentage of us with Tourettes that we may be actually KILLED OR ASSAULTED for ticcing in the wrong time and in the wrong place to the wrong person.
People think we're drunk or on drugs or we mean what we say and somehow that gives them the right to abuse us.
What I say as a tic is ALWAYS out of my control, but your reaction is 1000% in YOUR control.
Do better for those of us with neurological illnesses.
''if you are young and going out in public with a mobility aid there probably will be an ''able-bodied'' kid watching you and feeling less alone. and just maybe they might try taking their aid outside, someday.''
(i copied it some parts)
dont wanna derail a post from physically disabled, (even tho i am one i think)
and god i wanna be that, i wanna be that person, that young person who tics and stims in public, who uses disability aids (if thats the correct word!) in public, such as earplugs (god bless that woman i saw in bus that also had the same earplugs that me!), noise cancellation headphones, stim toys, chewelry, etc etc, be ''weird'' in public.
i wanna be that teen that lets other kids know that its okay to be like that, we are different, but everyone is different somehow you know? i wanna let little kids who are also like me, kids who may be different for society that its fucking okay!! for god's sake you dont have to adapt to some perfectionist idea for people, and i understand not being able to.
bc of ableist parents, friends, family, etc, bc of own internalized ableism... but i know someday you will be free, you will tic and stim, and be weird, and be a ''freak''! reclaim the word! and you will shout to the top of the world, to all the people, that you Are Free.! and no one will take that away from you. no one can if you dont let them
i wanna be that teen, i wanna be that kid that is an inspiration for others, not in a ''inspiration porn'' for abled and neurotypical people, but for people like me.. for people who are similar to me, who just know understand how shitty and lovely the world can be, who are learning but dont forget that you will never be alone,
i spent most of the 10 years with my tourettes feeling that i was Alone in this world.
but i am not.
people can be so kind to eachother, people can love so much, and there will be people who will not have the same condition as you, but will support you no matter what, doesnt matter if its online. You have people who care!!!
i saw someone say they would make a good trio and i think that's so true. chewer and tourette commit crimes against humanity and jaren makes sure they don't die !
-: Due to Ticci Toby’s Bipolar disorder he often goes months without taking care of himself. This means that his teeth are filled with cavities. He doesn’t feel the pain because of CIPA. E.J. Has had to constantly remind him to brush his teeth and has even taken it upon himself to do it every once in a while.
-: I’ve said this before but because of Ticci Toby’s CIPA he often gets blisters on his back from taking too hot of showers or baths.
-: Because of the gash on his cheek many Pastas have started to buy him tape. This is to tape over the gash that way he can properly clean his teeth and so he doesn’t have to tilt his head when drinking or eating.
-: He showers like a couple times a month. Whenever he does it is usually at a victims house.
-: He had 3 different pair of the same original converse. He has to keep switching them out because they wear down super easily.
-: Because of his converse wearing down due to his activities he tends to get blood and dirt stuck between his toes.
how does everyone deal with tics that aren’t ‘enough’ if you get what I’m saying?
Cuz i’ve recently developed a tic where I stretch my leg out/jerk it out but doing the tic doesn’t actually help relieve the feeling and it’s driving me insane
What is oppositional defiant tic or oppositional tic?
This term is coined by Jess Thom aka Touretteshero. She has Tourette’s and is a public speaker and advocate on Tourette’s. She has a blog dedicated to sharing information and personal experiences. (This link will directly take you to her sharing her experiences with ODT)
Oppositional tic is a tic that makes you say, do, or think of something you’d normally wouldn’t do or never would do.
E.g.
Ticcing a Christmas gift secret in front of the person
Tics forcing you to tense your stomach muscles until you pee (bladder tic)
Gagging tic that could lead to a vomiting tic
Ticcing insults or rude comments when you’re the type of person that keeps negative thoughts and opinions to yourself
Ticcing slurs
Tics mimicking regular conversations and makes it seem like you’re directly speaking to someone, when you're not meaning to or are shy and would less likely strike up a conversation (e.g. ticcing questions, ticcing specific words or paragraphs like: “Cool shoes!” “Hello!” may be combined with waving, “How’s your day?” Etc.)
Suggesting or requesting the ticcer to stay silent in certain places (library, movie theater, etc.), not to do something in the building (e.g. A sign says not to tap on the glass after hearing or reading the sign the ticcer may immediately tap on the glass as a tic, etc.), giving an assignment not to drop or spill something the ticcer may end up breaking or spilling it.
Getting a mental picture (spilling food and drinks, throwing stuff, hitting someone or something), words or phrases (these will not lead to anxious behavior or OCD as tics are exclusively a tic disorder neurotype, if one has a anxiety disorder or OCD, mental tics can trigger anxiety and OCD)
What makes it an oppositional tic if the disorder is oppositional itself?
Oppositional tics includes more range of complex tics and not just inappropriate and slur tics. It shows and open up minds that tics can mimic everything the human body possibly can do.
Are coprophenomena terms problematic?
No, though it caused uneducated people to create / use the ablest term “the swearing disease / disorder”. It also has lead people to believe it's something we want to do or choosing to do to get away with it, which can be really difficult to talk about tics including mental tics.
Coprophenomena terms are perfectly okay to use. Coprophenomena only focuses on insults, slurs and inappropriate vocal, motor and mental tics, while oppositional tics focuses on more range of complex tics.
ODT / OT also focuses more on the ticcers experience with their inappropriate tics, instead of focusing on how society is distressed by it.
Here's a video of a tourettic women who talks about OT / ODT
oh yeah mom. the weather doesn't affect my tourette's AT ALL, even when everybody says that, and it really is just my hrt, not the climate changing abruptly. thank you very much for your lack of understanding and your transphobia!! :)
