is it just me or is the "trans guys are just some boring guys and they make lame music and trans women are cool and interesting and make loud music" jokes almost like. an excuse for why theres not that many trans guys who are popular content creators or musicians or actors or authors or what have you. like blaming the invisibility of trans men on being "boring" and therefore not doing anything rather than oppression.
not to mention the example of music being that people have heard of one singular trans guy who works in a genre they dont like [people really love to act like cavetown is like specifically bad or cringe but thats just what most indie pop/rock/folk sounds like] and theyve heard of a handful of trans women who make hyperpop that they already like [and laura jane grace of course] and its really telling on themselves. theres trans guys making hyperpop and trans women making ""lame ukulele music"" and both of them and nonbinary people making music of tons of other genres. like. cmon. it reminds me of xkcd 385.
also i dont think these jokes are intentionally malicious or anything [most of the time] but it also feels sort of weird to be joking about how boring a group of marginalized people are. im not going to act like its the biggest deal in the world but its sort of low level bullying, innit? and i imagine having this weird expectation to be "cool and interesting" isnt fun for trans women either. its nice to get to be lame sometimes.
Yeah it's super weird, especially because it's repeated over and over, that part is the suspicious part. I even saw it on reddit a few days ago in one of the ftm subs. I do think it's like blaming the lack of trans men artists on trans men being "boring" instead of, you know the bigotry, the erasure, the inequality I think it's also a weird expectation that we all HAVE to live up to what other people think of as "cool" like if we're all not making hardcore metal and being as "SICK" as humanly possible, we are failing at transgender music and therefore are the reason trans men aren't represented as artists enough, which is ummm. okay.
why can't we make soft love songs about being bugs, or whatever. What happens to trans women who don't live up to the metal hardcore aesthetic? Look at Dylan Mulvaney. She made a dumb cutsie girlypop song and everyone acted like she is the founder of misogyny herself. So not only are we ridiculed for the music we make, we're trapped in transphobic expectations of what music we can or should make.
If you expect all trans women to make metal, you'll only see trans women who make metal, if you expect all trans men to make soft music, that's all you'll find! because that's all you looked for! Another thing is like, Oh all trans women music is cool and hardcore rock and roll, but trans men music is dumb and cutsie ukulele music? I wonder what gender those genres are normally associate with? Uhoh we're doing a sexism maybe the person making the joke doesn't have malicious intent, but the joke itself sure does.

The thing about disability being a social construct is largely true, because when you have a physical issue but receive accommodations + care such that they can do everything able-bodied people can, you're no longer considered disabled. Case in point: glasses. If glasses fix near-blindness, you're not considered disabled, even though you're basically blind without them.
In a hypothetical world where mech suits existed, were cheap and comfortable and accessible and worked well, and were normalised such that people didn't even notice, even quadreplegics wouldn't be considered disabled (although of course that's distant science fiction).
That's what "disability is a social construct" means. In the same way gender being a social construct doesn't mean boobs aren't real, or money being a social construct doesn't mean physical cash doesn't exist.
I don’t agree with this analysis at all.
What hypothetical disabled people might be able to do in the future holds no meaning in the current reality I occupy
You say that quadriplegics will be “considered” abled with exoskeletons - but then you fail to elaborate on the relationship between these devices, their users, and the people who supply them
My father has had type 1 diabetes for 30 years. 30 years is an entire lifetime for some people. The cost of his insulin increased literally that ENTIRE TIME until last year when the Biden admin put caps on insulin prices
Furthermore, his insulin pump retails for 4,600$, and if it breaks, he is still diabetic at the end of the day and will slowly and terribly die without it.
I noticed a lot of people on here have lots of ideas and hypotheticals about how disabled people should and could navigate the world, but their arguments fall flat and topple so easily because you’re not connecting these ideas to anyone’s intrinsic reality
This is why so many physically disabled people are fatigued by the entire “disability is a social construct” conversation. It’s overwhelmingly used by uneducated 17 year olds to minimize and downplay and discredit the real-life, life-or-death interactions and experiences many physically disabled people live with

Do you have any recommendations for writing a character with tourettes? Specifically one that would appeal to people with tourettes?
I'm not a writer, so while I can definitely give you information about tourettes and how it works and presents, the formatting and how specifically to write in acting out tics- that I'm unfortunately not sure of.
If I can help you with info and how tourettes feels to someone with it though, please let me know :)

remind that no matter how 'severe' or 'mild' your tics are, its normal for them to sometimes be worse and other times barely noticeable!
its apart of the tics/tourettes phenomenon called "waxing and waning" and if anything, should make you feel more validated in your diagnosis <3

i need to remind sighted-people once again that Lasik is not a magical cure for all vision problems.
the amount of people who i tell about my visual impairment who then tell me to get Lasik as if its some sort of secret cure, is ridiculous.
like first of all, Lasik isn't just a casual surgery to have. it can have serious serious side-effects and lead to life-long damage. second, it only treats certain eye conditions, like near/farsightedness, dry eyes, cataracts, etc. it cannot fix my diplopia, that's not what its used for.
please, if you have blind or visually impaired friends or family members, learn just some of the basics. it stops us from constantly having to have these conversations.

Hey, I was the person replying on that post you made about dystonic tics. I just wanted to apologize - I had completely misread the info you'd added about dystonic tics being different from muscle contractures (I basically thought you were saying they're both only ever from dystonia and not features of TS), totally my fault for not reading carefully and I'll delete my reblog. Super sorry about that!
No worries at all :D No harm, no foul my friend!

I'm a university neurology student specializing in movement disorders; there is plenty of medical literature talking about the duration of dystonic and blocking tics and its fairly well agreed it is generally quite brief (when talking about someone who ONLY has a tic disorder/tourettes), which I hope I made clear in the original post and in regards to my blog being a tourettes disorder blog, its the only context I was referring to it under. /gen
Reminder that tics from Tourettes and tic disorders are brief movements and sounds.
If you're experiencing prolonged wrist/foot/facial contractures (bending and tightening), its likely n o t caused by a tic and should be evaluated by a professional.

Let's have a talk about Echolalia.
Echolalia is NOT exclusive to autism; its seen in schizophrenia, tourettes syndrome and an umbrella of neurodevelopmental disorders.
Echolalia is NOT just randomly repeating memorable quotes or pieces of songs throughout the day; newsflash MOST PEOPLE DO THAT.
Echolalia is 'meaningless' or better put, purposeless, speech or phrases that are parroted in inappropriate situations as either a form of underdeveloped communication which should be encouraged, or neurological disorganized speech which you cannOT diagnose yourself with.
I'm sorry but I'm tired of people claiming they have echolalia bc they repeat tik tok sounds or movie phrases. That's being human.
You're not the same.

Caption: [A stitch with user @/sapphicyuji. The text on screen reads, " "you can't misgender cis people!", you have never had your gender questioned outside of your transness and it shows. sincerely, a trans poc".
I'm actually super glad we're having a conversation about this. The masculinization of black and brown women, because for years I felt like I endured this unique form of trauma until I realized other people went through the same thing too. And if there's one thing that I'd like to add to the conversation, there seems to be this misconception that this is something that starts at puberty. Like boys tell you you look like a man to hurt your feeling when that's so far from the case.
The first time I was purposefully misgendered was in kindergarten. I was constantly referred to by the masculine variant of my name, I was chased out of the women's restroom, and I had grown adults questioning what my biological sex was before I even knew what the difference was. And those behaviors persisted into adulthood because now if I present as anything less than 100% feminine, people will either compare me to men or animals.
And for myself and for many other brown and black women this is a life long act deliberately intended to humiliate, shame, and other us for the features we were naturally born with and I'm glad we're having a discussion on how harmful it actually is.]

Thank you, Watcher.
Thank you for listening to us, and thank you for explaining.
I know not everyone will feel comfortable coming back, but I personally feel the point of my criticisms weren't just for the sake of complaining but with the hopes they would listen, and they have.
I hope this has been a real learning opportunity for the boys and their company and I truly hope things only get better from here!
