remind that no matter how 'severe' or 'mild' your tics are, its normal for them to sometimes be worse and other times barely noticeable!
its apart of the tics/tourettes phenomenon called "waxing and waning" and if anything, should make you feel more validated in your diagnosis <3

I have learned to love my Tourettes
I love animals and most of my tics are animal sounds now so I'm happy
But! the fact that I'm happy and can live with them currently doesn't erase that it's still a disability
I can't go out to watch a movie without the risk of barking and copying every single noise my echolalia decides to focus on
I go flipping off every single thing I see (which is funny until you do it to someone that doesn't know)
I have thrown stuff across rooms (rip avocado)
I can't drive
I have almost joker cut my face by accident
I have tic attacks that looked like seizures with how much spasming I was doing
Got into tic attacks because my tics looped with my brother's
I have had tics make stop breathing
I have almost broken my hand so.many.times because I just started hitting things or myself
So many more things
And a week ago I cracked my mouth shut so hard I broke a molar
So yeah it's fine. I've broken the same arm thrice; I'm A Mess™ and have learned to live with my weirdness
I love joking about it because that's just my personality (please joke and laugh I do not mind it, but I'm my own person with my own experiences so ask always)
But it still doesn't erase how it impacts my life.

So much pain and aching. Tourette's can fuck off. Standing up for 6/7/8 hours straight without a break can fuck off. Neck/head tics can fuck off - my neck is hurting so much. Fuck off.

I’m making a post about Tourette’s for people that write for toby first things first. A common mistake that I have already pointed out but still see people making twitches are not tics twitches a caused from stress and poor diet etc while tics are not. Also as a person who had struggled with both they feel completely different I can feel tics coming up and twitches go almost unnoticed. And about the swearing part only about 10% of people with Tourette’s having swearing tics. So depending on how hard you write for Toby’s Tourette’s please keep that in mind. I am aware that his creator has confirmed he had ‘severe’ Tourette’s but that was clearly not shown in his story or any kind of other imagine we got from him so…..and please when you write about him and he has a tic attack don’t make y/n or whatever character hold him during it. yes it can calm one down but same goes for the seizure rules tics cannot be prevented by holding the body.
oh and some other facts: tics can trigger tics it’s pretty common me and my best friend both have tics and both get triggered of each other and also things like small noises can trigger tics. Most people can also feeling tics as a sort of tingling feeling creeping up the back of your neck (that’s the best description I have heard someone describe it) most tics also get triggered from sudden temperature changes
those last few sentences are from mine and my friend’s experiences :) I thought it’d put it in there too since it’s common but everyone is different with their tics
btw before anything no I do not have Tourette’s although I do have a tic disorder (also different things but won’t get into that)
Thanks for reading! Please spread this so people won’t make mistakes
(also this is not proof read and I’m dyslexic so if any typos don’t be surprised)

Just a reminder to my fellow ticcing people that if you have tics that cause you to hit yourself buy weightlifting gloves. They are padded on the palms. :)

AFTER 8 YEARS I HAVE OFFICIALLY BEEN MEDICALLY RECOGNIZED FOR MY PHYSICAL DISABILITIES!!!
I've struggled with motor tics my whole life and have officially been diagnosed with a tic disorder, unspecified at the moment.
For 8 years I've struggled with chronic muscle and joint pain and while I don't have a complete diagnosis it has finally been medically recognized.
Progress does happen.

Okay but honestly the worst thing about having Tourette’s syndrome isn’t the ableism, pain, stigma, etc. while all of those really do suck, nothing is worse than desperately trying not to tic and disturb your cat that has curled up resting on your leg.
I am currently in bed trying not to disturb the resting baby because I know he won’t understand that I can’t control it. I don’t care much about my tics in most situations, but when it disturbs my little kitty just trying to take a sleeb. I WILL NOT STAND IT.

“[primary school] wasn’t that bad,,,”
— they made me put my wheelchair at the back of the class
— i didn’t have a care plan (i’m physically and mentally disabled)
— they insisted i was normal (i have EDS, ADHD, FND, autism, tourettes, POTS (most likely), dyscalculia, etc)
— they made me do PE after i was in the hospital because of what is probably POTS and wouldn’t let me eat the salted crackers i’d brought in (high sodium is MEDICALLY RECOMMENDED for people with POTS)
— made me walk up stairs with crutches and a dislocated knee (THEY HAD A LIFT.)
— the HEAD OF SEN said my tics were disrespectful and offensive (i was nonverbal and having a tic attack) and when i stood up to get a pencil and paper to try and explain she yelled at me (she’s STILL head of SEN)
— they’d refuse to let me stay inside when i was about to have a meltdown
— they’d get angry when i couldn’t do PE
— teachers were horrible to me because of the fact i’m disabled in general
— they thought the fact i had muscles locking up (because of FND) was me faking it to get out of work
— theres so much more but i can’t remember because of brain fog

There's a genuine terror for a certain percentage of us with Tourettes that we may be actually KILLED OR ASSAULTED for ticcing in the wrong time and in the wrong place to the wrong person.
People think we're drunk or on drugs or we mean what we say and somehow that gives them the right to abuse us.
What I say as a tic is ALWAYS out of my control, but your reaction is 1000% in YOUR control.
Do better for those of us with neurological illnesses.
