Hi there. I LOVE dragons. Dragons are what my dreams are made of. They move in heavings of the mind and the voluntary power instinct of mountains. They are INCREDIBLE.
I love how versatile they are, too. A dragon could be a tiny armless wriggly thing that eats eggshells or could be this collosal beast made from shattered glass and golden veins. I get unreasonably upset when I see a drawing of a half-naked woman with a dragon in the back being tagged as 'dragon art', too. I DON'T WANT TO SEE THE BITCHES!! ALLOW ME TO SEE MY BELOVED WRETCHES, CAST FROM THE MIND AT THE DAWN OF OUR BEGINNING AND SHARED BETWEEN CULTURES, MINDS, STORIES!
My favourite types of dragon are the sharp ones and the ugly ones. By being not afraid to make a dragon ugly, the creator makes it far more beautiful than any other. I've also got to love the [object] dragons. I saw a lava lamp one just yesterday, and the gloopy substance on the inside made the stupid thing magnificent.
I used to play a game called Dragons World right up until December, when the servers shut down (without warning :[ ). I had this Spring dragon named Summer (ironic, I know) who was my maximum level killing machine. That dragon was also my first exposure to gender fluidity, because all the dragons in the game didn't have set sexes and my little brain just accepted that Summer was a he/she.
I hope that this proclaimation about my love of a mythical creature gives me a very cool real one. Do you think if I ask for a bug, I won't get one? (I'm asking for a bug)

Disney GID Scenes
If you’re like me, you grew up with animated Disney films and they were a huge part of why you got into GID. Some of the most iconic GID scenes of all time come from their films, namely Aladdin and Sleeping Beauty. However, if you’ve been following my blog for a while, you know that there are other scenes often left forgotten in the shadows of those greats.
So, I wanted to do a little homage to all of the major Disney GID scenes and a little summary and analysis of them. I hope you enjoy!
Aladdin
Tumblr media
If you are familiar with any animated GID scene, it’s likely Aladdin. This scene has been parodied and redrawn with different characters time and time again. And I can definitely see why. It has everything a bondage lover could ever desire: struggling, lots of muffled noises, onscreen gagging, peril. In many ways, it is the perfect bondage scene.
After the iconic magic carpet ride, Aladdin is kidnapped by Jafar and his goons. Jafar sees him as a threat to his plans and so attempts to have him killed. Aladdin is chained, gagged and thrown off a cliff into the ocean. He tries to reach the lamp, but is unable to before going unconscious. However, he succeeds in rubbing the lamp with his hand and Genie takes the chance to save him by using up his second wish.
It’s not my all-time favourite of the Disney scenes, but it’s definitely a close second place. Aladdin being chained rather than tied up is probably the main reason why it isn’t my top one, but I understand why. Chains are faster to apply in this scenario and easier to attach the weight to.
I also really like how integral to the plot this scene is. It uses up Genie’s second wish in a sudden and shocking way that ups the stakes of the story quickly. They didn’t necessarily have to have Aladdin be kidnapped to use the second wish, but I am not complaining. I am always happy when they could have done anything, but chose to have bondage for a scene.
The Black Cauldron
Tumblr media
One of Disney’s most forgotten films, I imagine a lot of people aren’t familiar with this one. It’s honestly one of my favourites. I love that trope of the heroes getting captured by the villain and forced to watch their doom.
Toward the end of the film, Taran, Eilonwy and Fflewddur Fflam are captured by the Horned King and strung up in his castle. They are forced to watch the creation of the dead army and later freed by Gurgi.
It is a very simple scene, but very effective in my opinion. It’s the only time in Disney history where the bondage involves the hands above the head and I think that counts for something. I also love the little subtle hand movements and looks of fear and defeat.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame
Tumblr media
This is the Disney animated film with the most bondage scenes in general, which is likely connected to the film’s themes of imprisonment and freedom. It has four GID scenes and I’ll talk about each in brief.
In the first scene, Quasimodo is tied down and humiliated during the Festival of Fools. He is pelted with rotten food until Esmeralda puts a stop to it.
In the second scene (pictured above), Quasi and Phoebus go to the Court of Miracles where they are ambushed, bound and gagged and almost hanged by the gypsies. I like the gag being used to prevent them from protesting.
In the third scene, Phoebus is arrested by Judge Frollo immediately after the previous scene. He is tied up.
Finally, Quasi is chained up in the battlements of Notre Dame to prevent him from interfering in Esmeralda’s execution.
While the second scene is obviously the best of the four, each have their own purpose. The first uses bondage to emphasize how Quasi will be imprisoned whether he is within the tower or out of it, a furthering of Judge Frollo’s brainwashing. The second scene is mostly played for comedy, but also to show how distrustful the gypsies are after Frollo’s persecution of them. I really enjoyed the idea of a musical number based around the bondage of the main characters. Pretty unique as Disney goes. Finally, the last scene is used to show Quasi’s strength and resilience when he finally physically and metaphorically breaks free of the chains holding him.
Return to Neverland
Tumblr media
While technically not a main Disney release, I just had to count this one because the scene is so good. Peter Pan is a character who is often in bondage, but this one just stands out as being one of his best.
Peter and the Lost Boys are ambushed by Captain Hook and his crew after being unwittingly sold out by Jane. The pirates proceed to lasso Peter’s wrists so he can’t fly away, and drag him toward them, where they handcuff him and bind his ankles. Peter is then taken to the Jolly Roger along with the Lost Boys and restrained to an anchor. He is eventually saved by Jane after almost being forced to walk the plank.
I just really like the details here. Every part of the scene is built around Peter not being able to fly away. The lassos to drag him out of the air are perfection and the weighted handcuffs being secured in close-up is just *chef’s kiss.* They really had no need to bind his ankles, but I’m very appreciative of it.
Pocahontas
Tumblr media
I’m honestly kind of surprised that this one isn’t as popular as the others. My guess is because John is never gagged. (and that’s all that matters according to like 75% of this community...) Still, I really like this one. There’s some struggling, interesting positioning and it is quite long.
After Kocoum is killed, John Smith is taken captive by the natives and sentenced to die. He is dragged off, tied to a pole and then later taken to the execution site. All the time, he is bound with his hands behind him.
There isn’t much to say about this scene. John is a captive and is treated as one. Despite the fact that he didn’t kill Kocoum, he is held to blame and treated quite harshly for it, revealing how high tensions have become. I like the little scene between him and Pocahontas in the tent. Short moments of tenderness with bondage is quite underrated in my opinion and this is a particularly good one.
The Rescuers Down Under
Tumblr media
I’m always iffy about what to think of this scene because it IS a child and it IS done frighteningly realistically. Considering that the Rescuers are about saving children from dangerous situations, it makes sense, but as a GID scene, I’m always hesitant around it.
The entire plot of the movie is Cody being kidnapped by the poacher McLeach. McLeach ties him up when they reach his hideout and interrogates him, but doesn’t get far. Toward the end of the film, Cody is captured again and tied to a crane to be dangled over crocodiles.
Not much to be said here other than Cody actually being restrained where his predecessor, Penny, was not. It helps heighten the fact that McLeach is far more dangerous and sadistic than Madam Medusa, who was more of a loose cannon.
Sleeping Beauty
Tumblr media
This is MY favourite Disney GID scene. It’s a classic for a reason!
Prince Philip goes to the fairy’s house to see Aurora, only to be ambushed by Maleficent and her goons. It’s clear that the trap was set for Aurora, but Maleficent doesn’t seem to care considering that she takes him with her and imprisons him. He is bound onscreen in fabulous fashion and gagged before being dragged out against his will. He is also in chains later on, but it’s very minor.
My favourite detail to point out about this is that Philip does not speak a single word in the film from this point onward. He is gagged both physically and metaphorically in that sense! I also enjoy the detail of one minion latching onto Philip’s shoulders and handgagging him in the first part of the scene. The details on the ropes are spectacular, especially knowing that it was hand drawn. I love the motion in particular.
Treasure Planet
Tumblr media
Another one I think is lesser known. I have... mixed feelings on this one. On one hand, it has a gag and some great tension. On the other hand, it has missed potential and a stupid escape.
After Jim goes back to the ship to retrieve the map, he returns to find Doppler and Amelia bound and gagged by the pirates. Jim himself is restrained, but manages to convince Silver not to tie him with the others by blackmailing him into taking him along. Later, Doppler frees himself by just pulling his hands out of the bonds.
One of my most hated things in media is when it is verbally said “tie him up” and it is never followed through. And Treasure Planet is one of the ones that ticks me off the most.
“Tie him up and leave him with the others.”
We were on the verge of greatness. We were THIS close!
Oh well... I guess I’ll have to resign to this moment and just imagine a world where we got Jim tied up.

2023 top reads
Tried to go with a few different genres. Read 102 books in 2023, had a blast especially reading several travelogue-style books (a new genre for me), and reading about the Titanic, Patton/WWII, in addition to yet more survival/shipwreck tales.
The Innocents Abroad - Mark Twain Surprisingly enjoyable book. Mark Twain goes on a trip to the Middle East/Holy Land in the 19th century and it's both hilarious and eye-opening.
Untrustworthy - Bonnie Kristian Insightful explainer of current hot topic issues.
Truth and Beauty - Andrew Klavan Interesting book about some famous poets and how it relates to the gospel. Written well.
In the House of Brede - Rumer Godden A fascinating novel about a Benedictine community through a few decades. The characters are all brought to life, each with their own struggles.
The Other Side of the Night - Daniel Allen Butler Subtitled "The Carpathia, The Californian, and the Night the Titanic was Lost". The tale of two ships and their two captains, what they did on that fateful night and the subsequent inquiries into their response (or lack thereof).
The Wager - David Grann "A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny, and Murder". My favorite genre. This one features The Wager that got separated from a convoy rounding Cape Horn, and then subsequently shipwrecked, castaways splitting into groups.
The Generals - Winston Groom 3 of the great WWII generals: George Marshall, George Patton, and Douglas MacArthur. Good unbiased primer on these 3 characters and how their paths in life differed/converged especially in WWII.
The Tower of Trebizond - Rose Macaulay Another travelogue type in the Middle East, also hilarious, but this one's definitely fictional.
Notre Dame de Paris - Victor Hugo I know Disney's version of the Hunchback of Notre Dame but first time reading this book - really it isn't so much about the "hunchback" as it is the building itself, Notre Dame. Has there ever been a more effective ode to a building in literature? What a story.
Dominion - Tom Holland I can't say I actually enjoyed reading this book, since it took me months to finish in bite-sized pieces, but it makes a very good case for how Western culture is basically shaped by Christianity. And this author's not even a Christian. Feels like there have been several other books recently with similar hypotheses but I think this book is the most comprehensive.
Other survival books I enjoyed: Ordeal By Hunger - George Stewart (story of the Donner Party, the American western frontier and cannibalism), Alive (story of the kids and the crashed plane in the Andes, and yes, more cannibalism), Empire of Ice and Stone (Arctic survival), Voyage of the Nimrod (Shackleton's other expedition that no one remembers), Into Thin Air (disaster on Mt Everest).

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest Queen of them all?
“Elizabeth was 25-years-old and in her youthful prime at the time of her accession. While never a beauty, she was attractive enough and the historian John Hayward (c.1564-1627) described her as being “of stature mean, slender, straight and amiably composed; of such state in her carriage, as every motion of her seemed to bear majesty” She had fair hair “inclined to pale yellow”, with “lively and sweet” eyes and a nose that rose slightly in the middle. Portraits suggest that Elizabeth resembled her mother facially, although she had her father’s colouring. During her brother’s reign, she had sought to present herself as a modest Protestant maiden, refusing to wear the rich clothes and jewels that had been left to her by her father. Throughout this time, she was held up as a model to other young women, making them “ashamed to be dressed and painted like peacocks” as John Aylmer (1521-1594), Bishop and tutor to Lade Jane Grey, put it. Even the sober Lady Jane Grey herself declared that, in matters of dress, she wished to follow “my Lady Elizabeth which followeth God’s word”. Elizabeth began to dress more flamboyantly during her sister’s reign and it is clear that somber black was not her real preference. As queen, Elizabeth loved fine clothes and was proud of her appearance, growing concerned as she began to notice herself ageing. From her 40s and 50s she wore wigs to cover her grey hair and thick layers of makeup to give the illusion of eternal youth. Her clothes also grew increasingly elaborate with large ruffs and huge padded sleeves; she owned around 3,000 costly gowns, many of which were strewn with jewels. She continued to attract suitors into her old age, with young men, such as Walter Raleigh (c.1552-1618) and the Earl of Essex, encouraging her in the belief that time had stood still for her. The personal possessions with which she decorated her palaces were equally splendid. She carried golden clocks around with her from residence to residence, as well as books covered in silver gilt and a bed pane embroidered with silver fabric. An inventory of her possessions with which she decorated her palaces were equally splendid. She carried golden clocks around with her from residence to residence, as well as books covered in silver gilt and a bed pane embroidered with silver fabric. An inventory of her possessions noted that she also owned more exotic items, including a “staff of unicorn’s horn with a cross garnished with silver gilt”. It was topped with a crystal ball.”
-          TUDOR TREASURY by Elizabeth Norton.
So … if there was a match-up of which Disney villain best matched Good Queen Bess, it’s a no brainer that it’d be the Evil Queen from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. She’s way more brutal in the original fairy tale, though she’s still scary in Disney’s film. Just like Gloriana, no one is allowed to steal her glory. The older Elizabeth I got, she became more vain. With a brand to protect and the symbol she’d become to her people, absolutely nothing could stand in her way. This meant that no one in her court, much less the ladies that were part of her household, could outshine her. There was an incident where some did and Bess took it as a serious offence. On one of these occasions, she broke a woman’s finger. Additionally, of all the potential claimants to the throne, the ones she was most afraid were her female cousins. Pop history is focused on the conflict between Mary, Queen of Scots and Elizabeth. However, from the moment she became England’s new Queen, Elizabeth I her eyes were locked on ALL of her female relatives. Everyone that she viewed as a threat, she used every excuse to disinherit them. With Catherine Grey, because the priest and witness had died at the time her union with Edward Seymour, Eartl of Hertford, her marriage was declared invalid which made her sons (both of which she had while she was imprisoned in the Tower) bastards. She died under house arrest shortly after. As for the youngest of the Grey sisters, Mary Grey, she was first ridiculed by the Spanish ambassador for her stature and apparent hunchback and then the Queen when she found out that she had married without royal permission. Elizabeth I ordered husband and wife be set apart so Mary Grey never enjoyed any marital bliss. Furthermore, Elizabeth I did not like that Mary Grey sided with the more Evangelical Protestants of her court.
In Elizabeth I’s England, there was only room for one woman and that was Elizabeth. During the last decades of her reign, when it became apparent that no manner of heckling and threats could change the course of nature, she became desperate to fool the viewer, including herself, by presenting an image of a nearly perfect, flawless monarch who was the closest thing to the living embodiment of a goddess as her people were ever going to get. It is also around this period that artists and playwrights aided in the promotion of the cult of the Virgin Queen which indirectly sought to replace that of the once popular Virgin Mary, Queen Mother of Heaven.
The best way to describe and (in the case of subjects) to deal with royalty was as one character tells his charge, Rodrigo “Ruy” Dias de Vivar in the Amazon Spanish series EL CID, is to remember that you may share in their joys and comfort them (when needed) but NEVER think that you can be their equal. The Tudors more than any other English dynasty preceding them, always made sure their subjects remembered that. They wove an alternative tale which became embedded in the popular image. Elizabeth I most of all, became a symbol for the masses to admire and fear, one that loved to remind her noble subjects that they could expect favors and good will if they ignored the passage of time and played the game of courtly love with the aging Queen.

Hello, I hope you're doing well ! I was wondering if you could do a headcanon (if not problematic, or ignore my request) about Simeon x Fem/GN reader, inspired by The Hunchback of Notre Dame, where some kind of Frollo (Hellfire song) would be unhealthily attracted to MC and he prays to the saints and the lord that she/they must be his or she/they'll die. Simeon being an angel (must not interfere with humans) will he break the rules to save her? How? If not, how would he react to MC's fate?
(I...I kind of ran away with this a bit? I hope it comes out as you hoped anon, sorry for taking so long to get to it ;-;)
---
"Savior"
From his perch up high, he watches yearly when the festival occurs for the people down below. The bright colored streamers that they run from light post to light post, the bright tents and stands lined up together where they sell their many goods and delicious smelling food. A carnival of eccentric performers arrives and makes their point in the center, a stage set up for them to perform their tricks and dances.
A masked man juggles while another takes a swing from his jug to light the liquid on fire, eliciting oo's and ah's from the crowd now gathering. On a raised stand near the stage are seats for the council; the ones who allow all this to happen. They sit in the shade of their canopy, cloaks covering their pale bodies as they snicker and judge the lower class in their revel. The one in the center, Lord Peter, has his head held the highest and his nose upturned as he surveys the crowd.
Simeon knows this man far too well. He hears the false prayers of this so-called Lord, and he knows they will go unanswered. He is a jaded fool who finds himself holier than thou, belittling the people he overlooks and wants not but for himself. He prays, and at this time of year, much more often, as the token of his sick desire presents themselves on the stage.
A dancer, face covered by a silken sash, sways on the stage to the music being played by the band at their feet. Their steps move in time with the rythm, back bowing and hands twisting the band they hold. They seem to inch closer and closer to the council, and Simeon finds himself enraptured by their movements; he, too, is a victim of their existence.
The closer they come, the harder Lord Peter grips at the arm rests of his seat. If he were stronger than a normal human, the wood would surely splinter under his grip; but it seems to lapse when the dancer comes up to him, taking the silken band in their hand and places it around his neck. Their hand guides under his chin, tilting his face towards theirs, a smile gracing their features...only for their other hand to drag his hoos down over his face and run away from his grip as quickly as they came. They give him a cheeky smirk as they continue back into their dance; Simeon can not help but chuckle at their antics, until he feels the wave rush towards him.
Rage is radiating off of the Lord now, and a deep growl breaks from him. He stands quickly, a bony finger pointing at the dancer and her troupe.
"Guards! Arrest them, immediately! Do not let a single one escape you!"
In a flurry, armed guards are surrounding the lot, taking the performers, the band, and Simeon's beloved MC, into custody. Shackles are placed on their wrists, spears pointed at anyone who dares to try and flee. MC glares at the head Lord, standing as tall as they could.
"We have done nothing to deserve this! We simply come to perform for your people! You would lock us away for simply wanting to provide enjoyment?!"
The Lord steps down from his perch and steps up toe to toe with MC, his hand gripping their chin roughly to make them hold eye contact with him.
"You made a grave error in trying me today, pet. You will not leave me this time."
His words were for their ears only, but Simeon caught each one. Panic struck the angel as he flew back to the top of the tower, knowing that MC and the rest of the lot would soon be thrown there. His heart ached as he saw them dropped to the floor, each being strewn on top of the other as the door was slammed shut and locked tight behind them. They gathered themselves together, tending to those who were hurt, making sure everyone was still with them.
Down below at the center of the carnival, Lord Peter and the rest of the council addressed the people, declaring there would be no more celebration as such. The performers were secretly theiving criminals, whom they had been suspicious of for long, until they finally had proof. Many of the commoners demanded the said proof, but the lords word was law; they were to all be executed.
Once the announcement was over, the lords descended their perch, each returning to their respective home; Simeon followed Lord Peter.
The menace entered his house, discarding his robe and turning towards the fireplace where a small fire still burned. He kneeled, and began to pray. Simeon wished to cover his ears and ignore the plea of this horrid man, beginning to beg once again for his beloved dancer to open their heart to him. He did not wish to kill them, but if they rejected him once more, he knew it to be the "will of God" to destroy them.
It was the law of the angels to never interfere with the likes of humanity. Their quarrels were their own, and should be treated as such.
But Simeon...
He flew to MC's cell, his mind surely made up. He knew the consequences he was going to face. But he was going to free them. All of them.
The guards were set up outside the large locked door, keeping watch for anyone trying to get in or out, but he was untraceable by their naked eye as he willed it. He placed his hands on the lock, and it dissolved under his touch, as he pulled the door open wide. His powers helped to destroy their bindings, and before the guards could react, he simply put them to sleep. The powers of the angels was no match for that made solely by man.
The prisoners were reluctant to move, terrified at how it all happened before their eyes; but he tried to reassure them with the sound of his voice, urging them forward, to be free and never look back. Slowly they began to move, trickling out of the room and storming down the stairs, MC making sure no stragglers were left behind. They paused for a moment, seeming to look directly at Simeon, though he knew they could not see him.
A small smile graced their lips. "Thank you, my savior," they spoke to the room, before following their troupe.
He watched over them as they escaped the tower, stopping any guard who got too close to them. He ensured their escape, not letting a single soul be lost. Once he knew they were leaving the city, he gave a deep sigh, and turned towards the house of Lord Peter.
Each step he took, feathers fell from his wings, and his halo dimmed, then cracked. He pushed open the door and stepped inside, facing down the man who almost destroyed his beloved MC, onyx horns slowly protruding from the crown of his head, as he let the heavy door close behind him.

MoF - Awakening: Ch 4
Many times over the course of the last thirty years had Simon envisioned what Dracula's throne room would be like. In his mind, he always imagined the Lord of Vampires seated on a throne made up of the bones of his enemies, drinking their blood from a skull.
As he once again found himself crashing through a stained glass window, this time of his own will, he found himself in a room that was far from the gloomy throne room he had expected. In fact, it wasn't even a throne room at all.
His jaw fell as he took in the sight.
He was in a room, closed in by a wall of tall columns and an open ceiling. There was no sun in the sky, nor was there a moon, only a pinkish-orange fog hanging in the air. There was a pool in the center, with fountains and lush greenery dangling from the surrounding columns.
Then he saw them. Lounging around the side of the pool were a group of scantily dressed women, their breasts just barely covered. Simon couldn't help but stare at them, feeling himself grow oddly thirsty.
"Simon," he heard the women call out to him. Somehow they knew his name. "Come, Simon."
The sound of their voices was sweet, like music to Simon's ears. His legs moved as if by their own accord, taking him towards the pool.
He could sense a great power, not coming from the women as a whole, but coming from the one at the heart of them. She is their leader … She is their queen …
She was the most beautiful of them all, yet at the same time she was the most bizarre of them all. Her face was pleasing to the eye, her body curvy and attractive. Yet, sitting on top of her head, sticking straight out of her long magenta hair we're a pair of … Horns? Tentacles? He wasn't quite sure what they were. And then there were a pair of bat-like wings protruding from her back. Whatever she was, it was clear she wasn't entirely human.
"Welcome warrior, we've been waiting for you," the queen greets him. "You have travelled so far … You must be weary."
That much was true. He would be lying if he denied it. Fighting his way through this castle had taken its toll on him. Even after the brief nap he had taken during the daylight hours, he still felt as though he could sleep for days on end. Unfortunately, there weren't many places to rest in the castle of chaos.
"Come, stay with us. You will find our hospitality most … pleasant," the queen offered him.
Crawling forward on their hands and knees, the women began to close in around him. The queen was the first to reach him, stroking her soft fingers along his cheek with one hand as she trailed the other down his chest. Before he knew it, there were hands all over his body, clutching at his arms and legs, dragging him with them to the harem bed that they had been previously lounging on.
Flat on his back, Simon couldn't help but let out a sigh of contentment at the softness of the mattress beneath him. He couldn't remember the last time he had felt so comfortable.
The queen soon climbed on top of him, straddling his hips as her fingers pried the belt from his waist, casting it off to the side.
"I want you to feel this. Let us show you how good you can feel…"
One by one the other women joined their queen, stripping him of every piece of armor on his body. By the time they were done, all that remained was his trousers, and the only reason they still remained was because the queen was sitting on top of him, preventing the others from ripping them off.
A feeling of ecstasy washed over him as the women hungrily kissed every inch of his skin, their moans ringing through his ears.
Deep down, he knew he should be fighting them, fearing that this too was a trap, but he couldn't seem to find the will to do it. His mind was in a haze, unable to take his focus on anything but the pleasure he was experiencing.
"Close your eyes and enjoy, my sweet," whispered the queen. "You are in good hands."
He obeyed without thought, and as he did so, a pair of moist lips pressed against his own, assumably the queen's, her tongue trying to break past the barrier inside.
However, no sooner had he granted her entrance, then he felt himself grow weaker. It was as if his very life force was being sucked from his body. This succeeded in snapping him from his euphoric trance, bringing him back to the reality of his situation.
This beautiful yet demonic woman was a creature that he had heard tales of but never seen before; a succubus.
As desperation set in, Simon began to fight back, kicking and clawing away at those who held him down. It was difficult in his weakening state, but he managed to gather every ounce of strength that was still within him and push her back. Her body fell back, colliding against the hard ground.
"Ugh!" the succubus groaned with pain.
Untangling himself from the other women, he made a run for it, quickly locating and retrieving his battle cross from the pile of armor that had been thrown aside.
By that time, the queen was back up on her feet. "Don't you like how I kiss, Simon?" she taunted him as she broke out into laughter.
Flying high up into the sky, she began to fire down at him with blasts of magic, and once again Simon found himself running and dodging attacks. He was getting terribly sick of it, but it seemed that no one in this castle would grant him any mercy.
Well … There was one person, but Simon hadn't seen him in some time. Not since the toymaker's obstacle course.
"You will regret rejecting me!"
In an attempt to fool him, the succubus created two clones of herself, casting a magical barrier around each of them. Through trial and error, he managed to figure out which one was the real one, eventually breaking through the barrier with the combat cross' grappling hook, grabbing the succubus and pulling her back down to the ground.
The succubus came crashing down hard, face scraping into the rock.
Simon retained battle stance as he waited for the succubus to get up and resume attacking him. That was not the case.
Scrambling to her knees, she lifted her head up to the sky, folding her hands as she spoke. "I am sorry that I have failed you, my lord!"
Slowly he approached her, but she did not move. She just knelt there, her head hung in shame. It was as if she had just given up. Perhaps she knew that she was going to die either way? If not at Simon's hands then those of her lord.
A piercing scream filled the air as the final blow was struck. The succubus slumped lifelessly to the ground.
Retracting his battle cross from the succubus' fallen body, he turned around and went back for his armor.
The other women tried to approach him, but one glare from Simon was enough to discourage them.
"Don't even try!" Simon barked.
With his armor back in place and the succubus defeated, he was left to question where he was supposed to go next. He had reached the furthest point in the castle, thinking that Dracula would be there to meet him, but the vampire lord was clearly nowhere to be seen. All he had found was his harem.
"I've had enough of this, you crazy old man!" he yelled out, hoping that Dracula would hear him, wherever he was. "Come out and face me!"
No sooner had those words left his lips, then things began to change. The room began to shake as the tropical paradise of the harem gave way, transforming into a dark sanctuary. Gone was the warmth that had flooded the harem, and in its place now stood an unearthly chill.
Goosebumps running down his spine, he turned and found exactly who he had been looking for.
Seated at the far end of the room on the throne of a king, surrounded by statues of dragons, was what he could only assume to be the vampire lord himself; Dracula.
"You fight well…" The shadowed vampire complimented him. "Worthy of the name Belmont."
...
The tower leading to Dracula's Lair was swarming with elite vampire guards, tasked with protecting the blood orbs that opened the way. They hid them well, making it difficult for Alucard to find them.
With gritted teeth he searched the den of vampires. At one point he stumbled across the dining room, where he found half dead women spread across the table. He was filled with disgust as he saw them there, bite marks spread all over their bodies.
Alucard couldn't help but imagine his wife in place of the women, her long red hair splayed out on the table beneath her head, her body torn to shreds by those who feasted on her. He imagined that she must have met her end in a similar manner.
Tears threatened to rise again, but Alucard pushed them back along with the horrifying mental image he had just produced. He didn't have time to mourn and beat himself up over how he failed to save her. He needed to focus on the task at hand.
Eventually, he managed to find one of the orbs sitting on a tall pedestal, but the second one wasn't so easy to find. He found the second pedestal, but it was empty, no sign of the orb to be found.
With a sigh, he retraced his steps through the castle in search of it.
Hidden away in one of the dark crevices of the kitchen, he found a dead, or rather he assumed to be dead, hunchback, hugging the blood orb tightly in its claws.
"Stupid creatures…" Alucard shook his head. "Always causing trouble."
For such a small creature, it sure had a lot of strength to it. Alucard pulled and pulled before he finally broke the orb free, breaking off the hunchback's arms in the process. The severed arms were promptly cast off to the side.
With both blood orbs in his possession, he made haste in returning to the top of Dracula's tower.
He could still sense Simon's presence inside by the time he got back, but this time he sensed another presence, one that he recognized… It was Dracula… There was no doubt about it. The power he sensed from the other side of the door was raw and powerful. It was almost stifling.
Gently setting the orbs into their slots, Alucard watched as the blood slowly began to trickle out and make its way through the channels of the door, joining together in the middle to form a heart; the dragon's heart.
Taking a deep yet unnecessary breath, he pushed open the door and stepped inside. He found, much to his relief, that the warrior and vampire lord had yet to engage in actual battle.
Dracula was the first to notice him.
"Good of you to join us, Alucard," the powerful vampire greeted him.
He had wondered if his father would be surprised to see him, but it was now clear that he was not.
Alucard cast a brief glance at Simon, noticing that he had turned towards him, but soon averted his gaze to that of Dracula.
"Father…" he greeted back.
He honestly didn't know what to say. Thirty years had passed since the father and son had last seen each other, according to what Simon had told him, and the two hadn't left off on the greatest of terms.
Flashes of memories filled his brain. Thanks to his vampiric powers, the memories were clearer than ever before, allowing him to remember even the tiniest of details. Dying at his father's hand… Witnessing the tragedy of his father's life in the Mirror of Fate… and lastly, he remembered hearing the hysterical crying of his father as he held him in his arms, hugging him close…
To say that he was at a loss was an understatement.
"Father?!" Simon echoed, his eyes widened in a mix of shock and horror. "You mean to say that Dracula is your father? As in..." he trailed off.
Alucard nodded. "I am his son, born of his flesh and blood."
Simon faltered backwards, evidently disturbed by this.
Alucard had hoped to keep such information from Simon, but it seemed that some things couldn't be helped.
"Indeed he is," Dracula affirmed. "It's been a long time since I've seen him though. He let me think him dead for thirty long years."
Could it possibly be that his father was angry with him, believing that he had purposefully remained inside that coffin for so many years? It seemed highly unlikely, especially from the fearsome dragon, but it was the only explanation that came to mind.
"That is because I was dead," he explained. "I only just awoke when Simon stumbled upon my tomb, and even then, I did not remember who I was or how I had come to be placed there."
"And now that you have regained your memory, I take it you have come to finish what you started," the elder vampire assumed, averting his gaze.
Alucard hesitated.
He wasn't sure how to reply to that. Was that what he wanted? Was it still his desire to put an end to the Prince of Darkness? A lot had changed since that fateful night he came charging through the castle doors, ignorant to the truth. He would admit, he still wanted to put an end to all the killings. He understood his reasoning, but couldn't entirely condone it.
Knowing what he did of his father's tragic past and how he had mourned the death of his only son, he felt that he wouldn't have the heart to go through with it.
His last words to his father before he died came to mind. "In the end… I pity you…"
The hatred he had once held in his heart towards Dracula was gone, replaced by a feeling of sorrow and pity.
With that in mind, he made his decision.
"No, I have not come to end you, Father."
Dracula's expression changed rapidly.
"What?!" Simon and Dracula said in unison, both now with widened eyes and jaws hanging open.
Alucard could have laughed at how amusingly similar their faces were. Even though one was a vampire and one had a full beard, he could still see a family resemblance.
"Actually, I came to make sure that this one doesn't do anything too rash," he pointed to Simon. "The last thing we need is for history to repeat itself."
Dracula immediately understood what his son meant.
"What are you talking about? Does this have to do with my father?" Simon asked. "You mentioned earlier that you knew of his fate."
Dracula glanced between the two, a dark brow raised in question. "You haven't told him?"
Alucard shook his head. "He's better off not knowing."
This reply angered the elder vampire.
"Is that so? Tell me, Alucard, do you think I was better off not knowing that I had a son I never knew about?"
Alucard bit his lip, something that should have hurt quite a lot, especially considering how this caused his fang to pierce through his lip, drawing blood as a result. His tongue quickly slid out and caught the blood before it could dribble down his chin.
His father did make a good point. The truth had been kept from both of them for many years, causing nothing but pain and misery. He had been trying to protect Simon by keeping the truth from him, but in reality history was already starting to repeat itself.
With a sigh, he turned towards the red haired warrior, struggling to figure out how to tell him.
"Are you finally going to tell me who you are?" Simon asked, crossing his arms in front of his chest.
Alucard nodded, and after a few more moments, he finally gathered the courage to do so.
"Alucard was the name given to me by my father upon my death. However, I was given a different name at birth… a human name."
"And that is?" Simon pressed on.
"My real name is Trevor … Trevor Belmont…"

An Analysis of the Creature Designs in Jurassic Fight Club
The 2008 History Channel miniseries Jurassic Fight Club was not a good show. Almost objectively, it was a badly-done series. The effects were of generally high quality, but those decent effects were in service of a poorly-scripted, gratuitously-violent, scientifically-inaccurate gorefest masquerading as a documentary.
It’s not worth your time.
That said, one bit of unambiguous praise I can give it lies in the designs for the dinosaurs. While they are frequently very inaccurate, they are completely unlike any dinosaur designs in any other media. The showrunners very easily could have just appropriated stock footage from older programs to pad their runtime, but they created unique clips featuring their own designs, which is commendable.
In this post, I’m going to be going through all of the creature designs that appear in Jurassic Fight Club and give my honest thoughts on them. I will factor in both accuracy to the real animal and my own personal tastes, and ultimately assign each one a score out of 10.
So, without further ado, let’s begin:
Tumblr media
Majungasaurus crenatissimus (male)
Let’s cover these in order of appearance, which means that the male Majungasaurus is first on the plate. (I am choosing to ignore that they call it Majungatholus in the narration; that is not what this creature’s name is.)
This is a pretty interesting portrayal of this animal. They very easily could have just thrown some skin over the bones and called it a day. But, they stretched their creativity a bit and gave it some speculative soft tissue, and I like that.
That said, the anatomy is completely wrong for a Majungasaurus. The skull is correct, but the arms are too well-developed, and the legs are way too long and lean. Those proportions would work pretty well if this were a Carnotaurus, but it’s a bit too athletic for a majungasaur.
7/10.
Tumblr media
Majungasaurus crenatissimus (female)
This is much more in line with what I was expecting from their Majungasaurus. It has the exact same problems as the male, and is missing the speculative soft tissue that I liked so much. Still okay, but not as interesting as the male.
6/10.
Tumblr media
Tyrannosaurus rex
No, I don’t know why it’s squatting like that in this promotional image.
Ignoring the weird pose, this isn’t too bad, actually. Sure, it still has broken wrists, and the skull is a bit off, but it otherwise looks about right. For a depiction of T. rex from 2008, this is pretty decent stuff. I like the muted purple color, and I am immensely appreciative of the fact that they didn’t just copy-paste a Jurassic Park rex into their show. They could have very easily done that, but they chose to make something more representative of the actual animal.
8/10.
Tumblr media
Nanotyrannus lancensis
This one’s a bit tough to judge. You see, Nanotyrannus doesn’t actually exist. In 2008, it was considered its own genus. But, in the decade since this series aired, it has been all but confirmed that Nanotyrannus is just a juvenile Tyrannosaurus.
That said, as a juvenile Tyrannosaurus, this is pretty good. It’s slim and fierce, with a good color scheme and decent accuracy to the fossils. Aside from the fact that this animal never existed, this is decent. Not bad at all.
7/10.
Tumblr media
Deinonychus antirrhopus
I am of completely mixed opinions about this one. On the one hand, aside from the broken wrists, the anatomy is pretty much spot-on. You can tell that the designers actually looked at real Deinonychus skeletons to model this. Also, the blue body with the striping on the tail is a very striking color pallete. As a design, this is actually pretty good.
But, then we get to the elephant in the room. Not a single feather to be found anywhere on its body. Even in 2008, no feathers at all was barely acceptable, and it is completely unforgiveable today.
I have heard that they didn’t do feathers because of budgetary restrictions, which is understandable, but it does drag this design down quite a bit.
I’m going to have to give it a neutral score. It’s a great monster design, but it’s a terrible raptor.
5/10.
Tumblr media
Tenontosaurus tilletti
Poor Tenontosaurus. It pretty much only ever gets media representation so that it can be killed by either Deinonychus or Acrocanthosaurus, and nobody ever seems to give it the time of day.
Fortunate, then, that this is a fantastic design.
Anatomically, it’s spot-on. The colors are dull, but not boring. It has a good amount of soft tissue, and carries a real sense of weight. Out of all the dinosaurs in the show, this one looks the most like a real animal. I have absolutely no complaints.
10/10.
Tumblr media
Stegosaurus ungulatus
This is top-quality stuff right here. The proportions are good, even if the tail is a bit on the short side. The hands have the correct number of digits, and all of the plates and spikes seem to be in order. Again, the colors are a bit drab, but it feels appropriate for an animal of this size.
Also, how strange is it that, of all shows, Jurassic Fight Club is the only one I’ve seen that gets Stegosaurus’s weirdly long neck right?
Another triumph.
10/10.
Tumblr media
Ceratosaurus nasicornis
Wow.
This is almost entirely perfect.
It has the right skull, it has the long teeth, it has the osteoderms on the back, the proportions are correct. Literally the only inaccuracy I can find is the pronated wrists, but that’s hardly enough to tarnish this thing’s otherwise perfect score.
This may be the best depiction of Ceratosaurus I’ve ever seen, and it is unquestionably the best design in the show.
10/10.
Tumblr media
Camarasaurus supremus
Eh.
It looks about right, but it just feels...plain. This is the first one where the dull color scheme is a downside. It’s just flat grey with a yellow head. I do like that detail, but that’s pretty much all it has going for it.
Also, it has elephant feet, which is just wrong.
4/10.
Tumblr media
Allosaurus fragilis
Alright, buckle down, because this one’s really bad.
Whereas everything up to this point at least feels like they looked at the actual animal as they were rendering, I’m not certain anyone involved in this thing’s design process had ever seen an Allosaurus skeleton. Let me count the issues:
The skull is so utterly wrong I’m unconvinced they didn’t just completely make it up.
The horns are the wrong size, the wrong shape, and in the wrong spot.
The wrists are broken and stuck on the end of way-too-long human arms.
The torso is too shallow, and has this weird hunchback thing going on.
The legs are too short, and those dainty little feet are bordering on comical. It doesn’t look like it should be able to stand up.
Literally no component of this thing’s anatomy resembles the animal it is supposed to be. It’s a trainwreck.
1/10.
Tumblr media
Carcharocles megalodon
To begin with, yes, I am all aboard Team Carcharocles.
With that out of the way, this is a very “meh” design. It’s literally just a big great white shark. No real creativity or imagination at play here. Normally, that would be fine, but C. megalodon isn’t particularly closely related to the great white, so I can’t rate this too highly.
4/10.
Tumblr media
Brygmophyseter shigensis
Conversely, I think that making Brygmophyseter a modified sperm whale is completely appropriate. This animal was a close cousin of the modern sperm whale, and thus would probably look fairly similar.
Decent colors, realistic anatomy, appropriate role within the episode’s story. Pretty decent stuff.
7/10.
Tumblr media
Gastonia burgei
The show’s designers keep doing a really good job with their armored dinosaurs. The Stegosaurus above was one of their best, and Gastonia here is no different.
It certainly helps that Gastonia is known from pretty solid remains, so they had a lot of material to work with. It looks pretty much as it should, and the color scheme is vibrant, but not overdone. Pretty stellar work overall.
9/10.
Tumblr media
Utahraptor ostrommaysi
Okay, I was willing to be forgiving of the Deinonychus because of the colors, plus the fact that they nailed its skeletal anatomy. This thing doesn’t have either of those advantages.
I can forgive the incorrect skull, Utahraptor‘s skull wasn’t known until nearly a decade after the show came out. What I cannot forgive is the drab, boring color scheme and those AWFUL feathers. If this is all they were going to do to add feathers to their raptors, I’m almost glad they left Deinonychus scaly.
Just awful.
2/10.
Tumblr media
Arctodus simus
Wait. They didn’t have the budget to render raptors with proper feathers, but they did have the budget to do an episode all about furry Pleistocene mammals?
Anyways, this is alright. The skull looks a bit off to me, and the legs are too short, but it’s not awful. Y’know, aside from the fact that they gave this bear human eyes for some reason.
6/10.
Tumblr media
Panthera leo atrox
That sure is a lion.
5/10.
Tumblr media
Pachyrhinosaurus canadensis
That is not Pachyrhinosaurus. Even ignoring the erroneous horn, -- which is addressed as speculative within the show -- that is straight-up not the skull of a Pachyrhinosaurus. They just modelled an (admittedly okay-looking) Achelousaurus, and then had the narrator call it Pachyrhinosaurus.
3/10.
Tumblr media
Albertosaurus sarcophagus
I don’t even know what to say here. All of the show’s other theropods had something interesting or noteworthy about them, either good or bad. But, this is just every pop-culture Albertosaurus I’ve ever seen.
It certainly is there.
4/10.
Tumblr media
Edmontosaurus annectens
This is one of the most completely unremarkable creature designs I’ve ever seen in my life. It’s a single dull color, it has no speculative soft tissue, and its only role in the episode is to be killed and eaten by predators.
This is the closest thing I’ve ever seen to a representation of a Perfectly Normal Beast. There is not a single remarkable thing here.
And it’s a shame, because Edmontosaurus is a very interesting and underrated animal, but here it gets saddled with this halfhearted shrug of a design.
4/10.
Tumblr media
Dromaeosaurus albertensis
Yeesh.
This has the advantage of being more anatomically accurate than the Utahraptor and the colors are okay, but those feathers are, again, absolutely appalling.
Topping that off, the narration talks about them communicating with each other via sign language, which is just...dumb. Even as a kid, I thought that was dumb.
2/10.

Top 10 Disney Villains
Tumblr media
10. King Candy Wreck-It Ralph (2012)
Although he’s newer to the villain roster, King Candy was a well-written villain who served as a perfect blend of humorous and genuinely threatening. He also tied very nicely into the themes of the film, which makes him stand out in my memory as a good villain, because I take more than just personality and actions into account when judging characters, but also role in the narrative, and how they support the themes and ideas of the story. King Candy is the perfect villain for a story like this, which is why I consider him good enough to be on this list, even if as a villain himself, he might not be the most memorable among the Disney canon.
Tumblr media
9. Gaston Beauty and the Beast (1991)
Perhaps the Disney villain we’re most likely to meet in real life, Gaston is the perfect example of toxic masculinity on full display. He’s a great anthithesis to the Beast, though I never saw him all that handsome, which sort of detracts just a little bit from the story. But in a story about how looks don’t matter, but actions do, he’s a great foil to the love interest. He’s a selfish hateful man who is handed everything he wants, and when he doesn’t get his way, he strongarms people until they meet his demands. Yet, despite his personality, he retains a legion of followers who are more-so admirers than actual friends. He never once considers anyone to be his equal or of sufficient worth unless it was helpful in his own endeavors. And anyone who has ever had a friend who basically used them and then ditched them at the soonest convenience can probably recognize that kind of so-called “friend” in Gaston. He’s a great villain to dissect as an analysis of our current culture, but I don’t want to write a five page essay on Gaston for a top 10 list.
Tumblr media
8. Yzma Emperor’s New Groove (2000)
Inarguably Disney’s best comedic villain (not counting her henchman Kronk), Yzma is a brilliantly funny character whose exaggurated appearance and over-the-top personality blend well with the fast-paced slapstick comedy that fills the movie. Yet, despite being a funny villainess, she avoids a major pitfall of many comedic villains by also being legitimately threatening and dangerous to our heroes. That, combined with the excellent writing in the movie makes Yzma so memorable and likable.
Tumblr media
7. Mother Gothel Tangled (2010)
Although her actual villainous actions in the movie are surprsingly few and far between, I genuinely love Mother Gothel as a villainess. Her motivations are well-established, and she’s the sole reason the story has any plot at all. Comparisons have been made to the living conditions of both Quasimodo and Rapunzel, and I would genuinely agree that Mother Gothel is akin to a diet version of Frollo without all the genocide and religious superiority. She has to be more discreet and pretend to be kind in order to keep her little flower content to remain obedient locked away from the outside world. It makes total sense the way she treats Rapunzel, and her entire character, personality, and role all fit together to enhance the narrative of the story.
Tumblr media
6. Long John Silver Treasure Planet (2002)
Arguably one of the most human villains from Disney, Silver is a beautiful complexity as he juggles the duality of being a father-figure to the impressionable young Jim, while also betraying Jim’s trust. Since Jim’s father left when he was a child, Jim closes himself off from people and seems adrift in the world. Silver, who has no need to trick the boy for his mutiny to succeed, still takes the time to take Jim under his wing, nurture the boy’s abilities, and form a bond. Heck, with how relatively apathetic Jim was, he could have manipulated Jim into hating being on the ship, and thus have him be happy when the mutiny sets him free. But instead, he chose to teach the boy and boost his confidence. In the end, Silver is a compelling Anti-Villain where it’s hard to really define him as a good or wicked person. That is honestly more interesting than just being a straight deceitful villain.
Tumblr media
5. Bill Sykes Oliver & Company (1988)
Perhaps the most surprising choice on my list, Sykes was a villain from Oliver & Company, a retelling of Oliver Twist with stray dogs and a kitten. However, despite Disney’s family friendly brand, Sykes is a surprisingly menacing character. A loan shark and a cut-throat business man, he spends most of the movie threatening to kill Fagin which is far darker than Disney tends to get. While many Disney villains want to kill people, those desires were driven by personal grievances with that person or people. With Sykes, it’s cold, ruthless business. He doesn’t care about Fagin’s life. All he cares about is getting his money, and Fagin’s life just happens to be the collateral. It’s the purest form of cold-blooded murder, and that’s not a common thing among Disney villains.
Tumblr media
4. Ursula The Little Mermaid (1989)
There’s a good reason Ursula is one of the flagship villains of this franchise. She has a strong personality, is a great antagonist, and directly plays off the protagonist’s weaknesses to win. Second only to Scar, and possibly Jafar, Ursula is the classic hand-drawn animated Disney villain to get closest to winning. The fact that she’s based on a drag queen is kind of perfect, since the fairytale was written by Hans Christian Andersen to express his love for Edvard Collin discreetly. He intended to give it to Edvard as a wedding gift, but Edvard and his wife purposefully “forgot” to tell him when the wedding was out of fear that he’d make a scene or announce his love for Edvard in front of everyone. Thus, the mermaid’s taboo love of someone she shouldn’t who comes from an entirely different way of living is a direct parallel to Hans’ feelings for the young Gentleman, and the mermaid being unable to speak and suffering greatly to be near her love is a clear metaphor for Hans’ own feelings of torture. So the inclusion of a drag queen in a movie adaptation of a covert metaphorical gay romantic tragedy is just deliciously fitting.
Tumblr media
3. The Horned King The Black Cauldron (1984)
Sykes got a place on this list for being genuinely intimidating, but this villain is living nightmare fuel. One of the best things a genuinely threatening villain can do is successfully scare you, and this villain scared the living daylights out of me as a child. In fact, he was the only Disney villain to truly and completely scare me as a child. The rest of the villains were pretty much just bad characters, but the Horned King was far more terrifying than anything else I’d seen as a kid. Though his movie bombed and the story itself was a bit lacking, the Horned King was a genuinely horrifying presence, and to this day, I can’t think Disney Villains without this guy clawing his way into my mind. Maybe as a villain himself, he’s a bit flat, but he’s a horrific undead murderous monster trying to snuff out all life. He doesn’t need to be that complex for what he is, and that works with the type of villain that he was created to be.
Tumblr media
2. Claude Frollo The Hunchback of Notre-Dame (1996)
If Sykes made it to number 5 for the cold-blooded attempt at murder on one person, Frollo strolls into 2nd place for his cold-blooded successful mass racial/ethnic genocide of multiple people over a long reign of tyranny. Although we don’t see his treats on-screen, he very verbally implies that he has been executing people one by one for at least twenty years as he crushes ants. We even see him barricade a family with children inside of their house and then proceed to burn it down. This man is not messing around, and I love it. When it coems to dark, twisted, and messed up villains, Frollo takes the cake. He is hands down one of the greatest and most horrible villains out there. And the fact that he does this all in the name of God is a hauntingly dark reminder of the true cruelty of the medieval Christian church. Frollo was written in the original book to be a deliberate critique of the Catholic church, and I for one am grateful that Disney decided to be faithful to Frollo’s horrible nature when adapting to film.

1. Maleficent Sleeping Beauty (1959)
Finally, we reach the leader of the Disney Villains. How could I not put her at the top of this list? She literally fights with all the powers of Hell. But what I like most about her is what you can piece together from the narrative. Out of all the fairies, only Fauna thinks that Maleficent could be reasoned with, and she feels sad at the idea that Maleficent may not even grasp the concept of happiness, or what it feels like to be loved. This opens Maleficent up to being a product of abuse, abandonment, and bitterness. Her hatred for the world and her actions of spite and envy come into a new light with the idea that it’s kindled from neglect and exclusion from others. It offers the question of what would happen if someone did try to just talk to her, and offers a possibly sympathetic reading of her character. But, the true crux of what Maleficent stands for is that she’s evil, and she takes great pleasure in her evil ways. She cursed a baby because she wasn’t invited to a party. When it comes to pure, unfiltered evil, Maleficent has that in spades. So, Maleficent is a perfect character no matter which type you prefer as a villain: the tormented outcast lashing out, or the heartless monster lighting the world on fire for fun. No matter what kind of villain you prefer, there’s a way of reading her narrative to satisfy you.

Sins of the Flesh
Chapter One: The Boy Next Door
Summary: Mallory and her parents have moved into a new home in California. As the little girl explores the property, she meets the next door neighbor.
Mallory was passed out in the backseat of her parents old BMW, clutching her pastel blue elephant Muff to her chest. They’d been on the road for three hours driving to their new California home. They wanted to be closer to Mallory’s grandmother, who was falling rather ill and needed her family closer during what was most certher last days. The young girl was excited to spend more time with her grandma, but was very nervous about the move. She’d tried to explain to her parents why she felt this way, but to no avail. She was usually such an adventurous child, reveling in exploring new places and going on adventures. But this made her bristle, an uncomfortable weight settling in her stomach.
The young girl had just managed to drag herself from deep slumber when she heard her father say excitedly, “Here we are!”
She craned her neck to peek out the glass, the car rolling to a stop. She barely got a chance to analyze her surroundings when her mother opened her door and got out to unbuckle Mallory from her car seat. Abigail Ellis was a thin woman with a rotund face, like a baby doll; dressed in a faded pink tank top and cargo shorts, her dark eyes framed behind large circle lenses. She’d long ago discarded the ponytail that had once loosely held her mouse brown hair.
She crouched inside the car and released Mallory, who still held Muff tightly in her little fingers. Abigail balanced her daughter on her hip, facing their new home.
It looked old, an amalgam of the grandiosity of the Victorian era, but the brick and mortar aesthetic of colonial architecture.
Mallory clung to her mother, a knot twisting in her gut.
“Bad,” she whispered to no one in particular.
Abigail looked at her daughter, not hearing her one word omen, “What’dya think, Mal?”
The girl said nothing more, burying her head in the point of her mother’s shoulder, fearfully tightening her grip on Muff. Her father had parked the car, the honk of the horn reverberating in Mallory’s ears. Christopher carried two of their bags in his broad arms, his small gut just barely bulging over his blue jeans in a football t-shirt. His honey colored hair shone in the late afternoon sun, his brown eyes peeking out from dark sunglasses, “You like it, Mal?” He reiterated his wife’s question.
She didn’t answer him either. The parents exchanged knowing looks, silently saying to each other that the new home would grow on her. The family transferred whatever belongings they had brought with them to the house; luckily the house, even being so cheap, retained its original furniture so they wouldn’t have to sleep on the floor. They’d worry about anything else tomorrow when the movers arrived. While her parents found themselves asleep almost immediately after dinner, exhausted from the drive, Mallory had no such luck. The young girl had fitful nightmares of men covered in a sheeny black skin crawling on the walls and ceiling, of bloody women in nurse outfits or with slit mouths, burned men, and ugly hunchbacks. She hid beneath the covers, clamping her hands over her ears to try and drown out the screaming. So many voices screaming.
This was the cause of her unresponsiveness the next day. Heavy bags beneath droopy brown eyes barely able to stay open, her mind off in another world, begging for rest. But when she would attempt to nap, the screaming would start again. Her parents, while worried, were having to help the movers, so she stayed out of their way. She chose to explore the yard, the trees, and eventually the back. However, as she skulked towards further on, Muff betwixt her tiny fingers, she heard a sound. It was a gurgling, wet sound, followed by something tearing, like a piece of paper. She looked towards the front, seeing the moving van and workers, her parents most likely inside.
She peeked around the back to investigate the noise. A boy in a light blue shirt was sitting leisurely in the grass, his back to her.
“What’re you doing?” She spoke without thinking, her curiosity overwhelming her caution.
The boy didn’t flinch or jump at the stranger’s voice, as if he knew all along she was there. He looked over his shoulder, strands of his blond hair sticking to his forehead with dried blood. Smears of the red gore painted his round cheeks; Mallory traced the trail of blood to see it soaked the boy’s hands, a mutilated cat held in his tiny fingers, its entrails hanging from its open belly. But his eyes, blue like a frosted winter morning, were as calm and cheerful as if she’d just discovered him merely petting the cat instead of smushing its guts, “Making my grandma a present.”
The combination of her parents’ teaching and common sense should’ve pushed her to run away back to the safety of the adults who milled about unaware at the front of the house.
She didn’t know why it didn’t; why she stood there watching the boy play with the twisted body, and asked with only a hint of disgust, “She likes dead cats?”
“Mhm,” he hummed, his gaze returning to the “gift”, “She buries them and they make the roses grow.”
Mallory had seen the sprawling garden of the house next door, it covered most of the yard in soft crimson. She could see it now, some of it peeking over the side of the house.
“Is that where she buries them?” She asked pointing.
He nodded, setting the carcass down and pulling on the thick strings of muscle and organs, making those same wet noises, “Yep.”
“They’re pretty.”
She honestly didn’t think much of the cat. It was a backdrop to the fascinating boy who emanated the same aura as her new home, yet she wasn’t scared of him.
“I like red ones the best,” he commented, looking over at her again, “She tried to plant other colors, but I wanted red the most.”
She approached him, circling around to see the boy face to face. As she drew closer, the sickly sweet odor of death assaulted her nostrils, but once again she ignored it, as of drawn in by another force to powerful to resist, “I’m Mallory. We just moved in.”
His eyes seemed more blinding when they stared straight at her, they sparkles when he smiled, though not like starlight or glitter, more like the sheen in a shark’s black eyes, “I’m Michael,” he stood for the first time, lifting up the corpse with him, “Do you wanna help?”
She shook her head, not for lack of curiosity, but out of principle, “I don’t wanna get blood on me.”
The boy looked as if she’d told him she was a goose, “Why not?”
When she thought about it, the only reason she could think of was, “Mommy and Daddy wouldn’t like it.”
He rubbed the wet, sticky redness on his hands together, as if to show it was safe, “It’s just like paint,” he giggled, though Mallory didn’t know what at, “I think it’s really pretty.”
Her name rounded the corner and met her ears. Her mother. She looked at the boy once more, “That’s my mommy, I gotta go.”
The boy’s smile faltered, and Mallory felt her heart break ever so slightly, “Ok…”
“How about I come back tomorrow,” she suggested, “We can play then!”
His face lit up once again, and Mallory realized she might do anything to see that smile everyday.
“Ok! Maybe we can find some rats next time!”
She waved goodbye to her new friend and raced off to the front to meet her mother, who had prepared her some lunch.
She didn’t tell her parents about the boy with pretty eyes and blood on his hands.

RWBY Original Character 29
Name: Pierre Laiton
Origin and Influence: The name “Pierre” is French for “rock/stone” while “Laiton” is French for “brass”; I decided to make more characters based on fairy tales and stories like how Team RWBY is, so Pierre is based on the “Hunchback of Notre Dame”
Age: 20 (Birthday is June 21)
Symbol: A bell with a pair of horns (one of the horns is broken)
Species: Bat Faunus
Appearance: Pierre is a young man with a hunched back and a deformed face with a big nose, a large wart covering part of his left eye, and buck teeth; his Faunus trait is a pair of bat wings on his back that actually allow him to fly for a short time when he wants; he has pale skin, stone gray hair that covers his left eye enough to cover the wart, large muscular arms, and gray/green eyes; his normal attire is a green short-sleeved tunic with his bell emblem on the shoulders, a gray hooded cloak, brown pants with a rope acting as the belt, and a pair of green-colored slip-on shoes
Personality: Despite his ugly and monstrous appearance, Pierre is a kind and gentle man that only wishes to help people; he wants to meet people, but he gets upset when his looks frighten them and they shun him; when people actually show him kindness, he is very grateful and treats them with respected family members that he trusts; Pierre has very little social skills and can come across as awkward at times unless he shares his hobbies with others who are interested; even though he is a nice guy, Pierre’s anger can be a shock to many when he uses brute strength to intimidate others who get on his nerves; a very curious person, Pierre enjoys learning about a number of things about the world of Remnant; Pierre is an artistic individual that enjoys sculpting figurines and scale models, as well as enjoying other artwork such as stained glass windows or paintings
Backstory: Pierre was born with deformities and his parents left him as an infant at the doors of a church in the village of Notremodo, a village to the east of Vale. The priest and nuns found Pierre with a note explaining why they couldn’t raise the boy and took him in despite how he looked, treating him like their own son. As he grew up, Pierre helped around the church anyway he could, but mostly stayed in the bell tower and rang the bells when needed. The villagers heard about a misshapen being roaming around the cathedral, believing the place to be haunted by a gargoyle when they saw the bat-like wings. Because of the rumors about him, Pierre decided to stay hidden from most people and kept to himself in the tower. The only real friends he had growing up were his teacher, Lucifer Fujita, and his daughter, Cereza. As they spent time together, Pierre was trained to fight when Lucifer saw his strength while ringing the church bells by hand. With Cereza as his main training partner, the two became warriors that could fight Grimm. While Cereza decided to go to Beacon Academy in Vale, Pierre chose to stay at the church because he believed nobody would accept him. Cereza assured that he’d find other friends and promised to return to Notremodo when she could. Until she did, Pierre continued his training and duties around the church.
Theme Song: La Cloche and Le Sanctuaire from Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance
Weapon: Pierre’s weapon is a hammer similar to Nora Valkyrie’s Magnhild, but it has a grappling hook function instead of a grenade launcher; when used as a grappling hook, the handle separates into multiple parts and becomes a cable while the head of the hammer extends claws that latch onto objects; the claws can dig into stone with ease and can even pierce the armor of tough Grimm; the name of the hammer is “Sonnerie” (French for “making sound” or “ring”; pronounced “SOO-neh-REE”)
Aura and Semblance: Pierre’s Semblance is a stone gray color; his Semblance is a “Stone Skin Semblance” that transforms his body into a moving statue, increasing his offense and defense at the cost of lowering his speed and mobility due to the extra weight; he can use his power to great effect by turning to stone quickly to defend from an attack, then change back to normal in order to maneuver around the enemy; one of the main weaknesses of this ability is that if he is struck in the same place multiple times, the stone armor is dispelled and he needs to recharge before using it again
Fighting Style: Pierre Laiton’s way of fighting is a mix of brute strength and agile parkour-like movements; using his strength, he is able to fend off groups of enemies with ease while he has the agility to traverse a number of areas and keep up with speedy warriors; using his weapon, he’s able to grab distant enemies and even reach them with ease while setting up for strong attacks; with the expert control he has over his Semblance, one of his preferred attacks is to get above an enemy and transform into stone in order to plummet on top of them for major damage; some weaknesses of his style is enemies that attack really fast up close, Dust users, and smart foes that can read his movements
OKAY! I’ve finished up the profile for a new story-based character! Everyone, please welcome Pierre Laiton. @unashamed-shipper @bunnyhoplollipop @ventus-rogue @nalufever @kjthetalekeeper @chuckles-the-jester @jkl930 @the-knight-of-wren @emmathehalf-bloodhunter
I hope all of you who see this likes the profile, because I’m planning on having this character in my OC fic when I finish covering Volume 3.

Spanish/Iberian mythological creatures: What Even edition
Tumblr media
Oricuerno: The “main” Spanish take on the unicorn (the other being the Escornau). White-furred with a purple head, blue or red eyes, deer hooves topped by small wings, and a twisted black, red and white horn. Usually living in the highest mountain peaks, has the power to turn women into men, and also cure poisonings and purify waters. Its entire body is considered a powerful amulet
Caltrí Snake: Massive and thick-bodied, with red scales. Devours any human it encounters, but weeps for them after the deed is done. Also known as the Calcatrix, which apparently was used to refer to crocodiles.
Cassandre: A beast of multiple colours whose pleasant smell attracts most animals but kills snakes. Between these traits and that it’s commonly assumed to be a lynx, it serves as the local version of the medieval “panthers”
Jancana: Extremely similar to the cantabrian Ojancano and sometimes treated as its female counterpart, while also a separate being. A hideous, deformed, wrinkled ogress with a single eye (plus two small ones in the nape) and either long, messy hair or snakes in place of hair. Can transform into beautiful women or giant snakes; in the latter case they can only return to their true selves after coiling six times around a man then tongue-kissing them. Also just generally rape men and cut off their tongues afterwards.
Blue-Legs Garrules: Female child-eater that enters houses through the chimney. Sometimes shown as the partner-in-crime of fellow bogeyman Camunyes
Velludo: “Hairy One” A headless horse that runs across mountains and empty streets at night, perpetually chased by six furious dogs. Said to be the spirit of a muslim king that murdered his sons (which would be the dogs)
Lobizon: A werewolf present both in Argentina and parts of Portugal, born from a curse that supposedly befalls the seventh son in any family. A pig-like hairy dog, with blazing red eyes and floppy ears. Devours children and carrion but especially craves animal excrement, a diet that renders its human form yellow-skinned and sickly
Vera Dwarf: Said to live close to a natural fountain, following close whoever approaches to collect water. Those with a good heart are allowed to pass and protected from all harm, but those with bad intentions are mercilessly beaten. Mentioned sometimes to grow in size as they watch over travellers
Silbán. A long, haired, long-legged giant whose lair was a cave high in a mountain only he could reach. Raided a nearby village to kidnap and devour women with impunity until he fell in love with his latest would-be-victim. She then escaped his clutches and conspired with the villagers to make him drink poisoned milk.
Cabrichocho: A blue lamb that subsists entirely on sap and butterflies. Hopelessly smitten with human women, to the point it mimics human speech in an attempt to win them over. Its hide is sought after by wizards, for it grants flight to the wearer.
Docejo: Bird-like being with a single wing, a single eye, and human lips instead of a beak. Drinks only from a specific river (the Jucar) and will in fact die if it ingests water from anywhere else. Loves music, and entertains itself by loudly burping at night.
Rosemunho: Evil spirit that appears in the form of whirlwind or a dust devil. Pulls travellers within itself only to toss them to their deaths somewhere else. Can be driven off by just throwing a stone or stick in its direction, because it will go hurl that instead.
Mairu: Giants said to be responsible for the construction of dolmens and other megalithic constructs across the Basque Country. Usually presented as an all-male race, with lamias as their counterpart, but some myths bring up female Mairu (Mairi) noted for their immense strength. Their arm bones – sometimes the entire preserved arm- possess magical properties
Hodei: Deity embodying storms, hail and thunder, appearing as clouds. Malevolent, brings down lightning to ruin the crops of farmers. Sometimes considered another of the earth goddess Mari and the dragon Sugaar’s many children
Darro Goblin: A cryptid whose sole witness described it as something between a monkey and a dog that walked on two legs, with an enormous head and exceedingly hairy ears. Gave terrifying screams
Mialta: Female bogeyman that force-feeds naughty children with pancakes she cooks herself, and which taste absolutely horrid.
El Pecado: Literally “The Sin”, a massive lizard so named because of its hideousness. Terrorized the village of Ovijuela until Saint Peter arrived and tamed it.
Cabanyas Lizard: Another huge, man-eating reptile, so strong it tore apart a mountain with a single strike of its tail.
Trucafort: A giant bogeyman with a beard so dense and long he keeps stepping on it, thus his tremendous howling. Always seen carrying two enormous boulders; one balanced atop his head, another at hand to smash children with.
Ome Marin: A humanoid covered in scales, with green teeth and sometimes a “mane” of algae. Prowls the coast devouring anything it can catch, including humans, and especially loves messing with and/or destroying fishing boats, ensuring sailors get stranded. Known sometimes to swim upstream and assault women near rivers.
Frailecillo: “Little Friar” Ugly, hunchbacked goblins with bony arms and massive feet, dressed in long black robes and emitting a greenish or purplish glow. Sleeping during the day, they are sometimes said to be clever and helpful but often they are extremely violent, entering houses to pinch the eyes of children as they sleep, chop off their limbs or sew their buttholes shut.
Marés: Child-eating octopuses whose embrace is impossible to break free from.
Xas: Goblin that takes refuge in abandoned windmills. While they won’t enter inhabited houses they delight in throwing rocks at them, as well as harassing livestock and stealing fruit from orchards
Gizotso: The basque werewolf. Rather than a curse, it is born from forbidden relations between man and animal. Usually wrapped in chains, and very bloodthirsty; the most common tale about them involves one randomly attacking a woman and ripping off her breasts. Always depicted with one of its legs ending in a round stump instead of a paw.
Guaraguara: Bogeyman of undefined appearance, but sometimes referred to as a “bug”
Pauet: The ghost of a child that died at the bottom of a well, crying for help that never arrived, and who now pulls others inside in an attempt to cure its loneliness. Other areas have a feminine counterpart in Maria Gancha (something like “Grabby Mary”) who simply snatches children down her well with hooked claws
Beast of the Clamor: A water monster whose terrible roaring could be heard all across the Ebro river. Legend goes a maiden was sacrificed to the beast to appease its wrath, and even though it worked and it was never heard from again, the unlucky maiden’s ghost is said to still haunt the river to this day.
Joan The Bear: Heroic giant born from a woman raped by an evil bear. Possessing enormous strength and armed with a just-as-massive iron bar, went on to have many adventures alongside a group of similarly-gifted friends – Arrencapins (who could tear the biggest trees off the ground), Escoltin-Escoltaina (who could hear even the smallest noise) Regiramuntaynes (pushes mountains around) and Bufim-Bufaina (could split the clouds by blowing)
Pardal Verd: A green, sometimes golden bird whose eggs have healing properties. Usually guarded by a giant serpent, and even then you can only ever take one egg.
Mother Of Fish: Bigger than man and brightly-coloured, like a sea snake with three heads, two tails and big expressive eyes. Intelligent, can speak and appear in the dreams of others in the form of a fairy. Eating her heads makes even the most barren woman bear children, and her tails can be made into swords.
Papasopas: A bogeyman that shows up to eat the food that naughty children refuse, but for every bite it takes, it will also bite on the children themselves. Also loves eating flies
Garos: An evil giant that was eventually bested by an entire village and killed by having a nail driven through his nape. His preserved skull was said to heal and invigorate children
Jan del Gel: A massive, literal snow man. The third of a series of snow children made by an old couple, unable to bear their own. While the first two were exemplary children up until they melted come spring, Jan ate the couple’s entire food storage then left to the mountains. Comes out during blizzards and freezes any children it spots with a glance, to drag them to his frigid cave and devour.
Orcavella: A fiendish mountain hag that terrorized an entire village, dabbling in the dark arts and eating children for centuries until finally she got tired of living and buried herself alongside a hapless shepherd she had under her control. None could approach despite his screams due to the swarms of snakes protecting the tomb, and they are said to protect it even now.
White Fox: Self-explanatory, but also has green ears/spots above the eyes and its tail, legs and teeth are entirely black. Feeds on flowers and occasionally stealing lunches from people. Its blood is highly sought after for its magical properties, but whoever meets its gaze feels immense panic.
Bird of Joy: Crimson-coloured, with green-and-white spots and black wings/beak. Start life as maggots on the White Fox’s body once it dies, eating one another until only one remains and matures. Eagles and other birds of prey give it wide berth. Loses its wings shortly before death, and if anyone pulls out the eyes once its dead, they will see them become magic diamonds.
Gollut: Hideous, narrow-eyed goblins that supposedly employed dark magic brought bad luck. Actually has a real life basis: Up until the beginning of the 20th century Catalunya housed a small, possibly inbred community plagued by deformities and dwarfism, living in squalor
Enemiguillo: “Little enemy” Microscopic, invisible goblins under the control of witches and usually held within a bottle. Their attacks express as countless burning bites on the legs and groin
Sopeira Serpent: A princess transformed into a massive snake by a curse. A knight failed to break it and ultimately killed the princess-serpent, after which her castle sank into the ground, taking with it everyone inside
Since these compilations seem to have gotten kinda popular here’s a bunch more i’ve done before , which started as me trying to help @tyrantisterror pad out his fantasy setting

It Takes Two pt 6
sorry y’all, had some severe writer’s block since I got home and my parents put me to work around the house. So anyway this is kinda a bs scene, but y’know what, it’s something.
Parts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
high school au, theater au, Logince, 2264
An orange glow set into the atmosphere over the Target parking lot. Cars came and went with honking horns, screeching tires, and rage-fueled middle fingers. Children screamed and giggled at their parents, people almost got run over because they were distracted by their phones, dogs barked across the lot where the Pet Smart sat.
“Blue one,” Logan gestured to the blue mustang revving across the lot with the Blue Moon in his hand. Roman added another tally mark under Logan’s name on the pizza box lid, refusing to take his eyes off the lot. It had been Roman’s idea to play the game Russell and Carl played at the end of Up, and he couldn't stop smiling.
When the two of them had left rehearsal that night, Logan stopped at the exit. Roman asked if he wanted to go with Virgil, Patton, and the others to Cookout, then go home with Virgil after. For a minute, Logan had just stood there, and Roman wondered what was going through his head. When he finally spoke up, his voice was soft, to the point of sounding plush.
“Let’s go to Target.” Roman hadn’t spent a lot of time with Logan, but he remembered what “going to Target” meant between him and Virgil, and that muted smile and matte fog in Logan’s eyes screamed of the subtext.
“Let’s not go home. Let's not go to my house or your house or Virgil’s house, let’s go out and pretend that we don't have anywhere else that we have to be except with each other. Let’s wander around a store that has a little bit of everything and pretend we have money to buy the things we like and just wander and look and laugh and pretend reality doesn't exist because it really doesn't in Target.”
And that's what they'd been doing for the past few hours. They'd circled around the store around three times, stopping at different things each time, talking to each other and laughing and letting time slip away into the odd obscurity that comes with places like Target. After a while, they bought a six pack of Blue Moons from an older woman who trusted Roman and never asked for IDs, and a pizza from the Pizza Hut inside the store, and gone out to the curb to watch for blue and red cars.
“Red one,” Roman pointed with his pinkie, the rest of his hand still wielding a pizza crust.
“Roman,” Logan deadpanned, “that’s a decoration.” Roman looked from the red ball cemented in front of the entrance to an unamused Logan.
“Yeah, but it’s red, isn’t it?” Logan scoffed at the rebuttal, rolling his eyes in an attempt to hide his smirk.
“Fine. In that case,” Logan pointed to the label on his beer, “blue one.” Roman laughed at the gesture, throwing his head back and using his entire body to laugh. Logan smiled, chuckling at the ground while Roman smacked his knee with his free hand. Roman’s laughter rang in Logan’s ears and warmed him to his core, filling him with more warm and fuzzy feelings than beer ever could.
“You’re fantastic.” The comment was off-hand, spilled without meaning to be spoken. Logan smiled, ignoring the way his heart skipped a beat at the comment. Swirling the beer in his hand, Logan watched the sky, orange glowing on the horizon and pink cotton candy clouds blushing against the darkening blue sky, his gaze too intense to be apathetic and too careless to be intent. He seemed to be watching something far beyond the colors of the sky, beyond the parking lot, like he was looking through the particles of reality to watch something happening in the next dimension.
Roman swallowed hard as he forced on himself the truth that he had no clue what was happening in Logan’s head.
“You okay,” he finally asked, trying to snap Logan from his trance-like state. Logan hummed before answering.
“Thinking.”
“What about?” For a long moment, Logan didn’t answer. Roman almost thought that Logan hadn’t heard him.
“What’s your favorite flower?” The question caught Roman off guard. He couldn’t quite tell what Logan meant to convey with the question. Was that what he’d been thinking about? Was he just asking to change the subject? Was he actually interested, or was it a new game?
“Roses.” Logan snickered at the answer. “What?”
“Nothing, it’s just,” he sighed, “I should have seen that coming. A classic symbol for passion and romance, I don’t know how I didn’t expect it.”
“That’s the beauty of it, though,” Roman defended calmly. “You’re only thinking of the red rose, which symbolizes courage in addition to passion. I love roses in all colors and meanings. Yellow ones symbolize friendship, pale peach is modesty, yellow with red tips is falling in love, orange is desire and fascination and creativity and enthusiasm, burgandy is unconscious beauty, blue is,” Roman’s voice caught when he noticed how Logan was looking at him as he rambled, a ghost of a smile on his lips and the fog almost cleared from his exhausted eyes. “Blue is the unattainable, the impossible. Roses of all colors are beautiful and have their own unique and beautiful meanings, and they’re just in general lovely flowers. Anyway, what’s yours?”
“Mine?” Logan asked, turning his gaze to the ground as he thought. “Dandelions.”
“Really,” Roman smiled. “I had you pegged for more of a lily or lilac kind of guy. Why dandelions?” Logan shook his head, smiling to himself.
“They symbolize a lot of things, from intelligence to healing to survival. The message being conveyed when they’re given is to not give up, even when those around you keep trying to get rid of you. That’s what I really like about them, I think. They’re resilient. Most people call them stubborn, but that’s just annoyance at their resilience. People only call it a weed because somebody decided it was growing in the wrong place. They’re jealous of its resilience, its ability to thrive whether it’s growing in rich soil or breaking through concrete to reach for the sun. Once its life cycle is up, it becomes this beautiful little dainty thing, and allows itself to be carried into a hundred next lives by either the wind or someone who believes in wishes. Most flowers need exactly the right conditions so they can grow for a few weeks and be at their peak for maybe two days before they start wilting. Dandelions can grow anywhere, and for half their life they look like the sun and the other half they’re a beautiful puffball that rides on wishes.”
Roman watched and listened to Logan in awe. He remembered Logan mentioning having an appreciation for poetry, but at the time he’d thought that that was all it was - an appreciation. The way Logan spoke, though, the way the words spilled from his lips so eloquently and effortlessly, Roman felt a smile quirk his lips at the realization that the connection was so much more than just academic fascination. Glancing at the bottle in Logan’s hand, Roman told himself that Logan had to be at least a little tipsy to talk so freely about this kind of thing. He usually rambled on forever about facts and science and analysis, not the symbolism and sentiment of flowers.
“Sorry,” Logan’s smile faded as he bowed his head. “I’m rambling, I know it’s annoying. Next time, just tell me to stop, okay? I don’t want to-”
“You’re not being annoying.” Roman’s words were much harsher than he’d intended, as though he were offended at the notion. He was, but Logan didn’t need to know that. “I will personally fight anyone who told you that you’re annoying when you’re talking about something that you are clearly passionate about. I love listening to you talk, and if you ever think otherwise, you just point out the one who planted that thought in your head.” Logan huffed a laugh through his nose, sending a half smile up at Roman.
“My knight in shining armor, you are,” Logan mumbled into the bottle as he took another swig.
“I should hope not,” Roman replied. “A knight in shining armor hasn’t done anything, hasn’t been anywhere. If anything, I’d be your knight in dented, rusted, dirt- and blood-stained armor. That way people can know that I’d protect you from anything that tried to hurt you.” Logan kept his eyes trained on the ground in an attempt to hide the smile he couldn’t quite hold back.
“You’re too good.” Roman smiled at the comment. He couldn’t remember the last time someone called him good. Not fantastic, not spectacular, not anything on the other side of the spectrum, just good. That was probably the greatest compliment Roman could dream of receiving. Taking a swig of the beer sitting next to him, Roman’s mind raced, trying to come up with a way to continue the conversation.
“What’s your favorite Disney movie?”
“Big Hero Six. You?” Logan’s answer came too easily for Roman’s liking. Roman had a hard time choosing his favorite Disney movie, as all of them had worked together to form his childhood and him as a person.
“Currently, I’d have to say Hercules, but I can never choose an all-time favorite. I love them all equally for different reasons. I could never choose.”
“Well, I have to agree that Hercules is a good choice. The art and music style were daring, and Greek mythology is always a good choice. That’s probably my fourth favorite.” Roman hummed.
“What’re your other top four?” Logan continued to stare at the concrete as Roman watched him think on the question.
“Big Hero Six, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Lion King, and Hercules.” Roman hummed at the list.
“Why those?”
“Why are you asking me so many questions?” Logan looked back up to Roman, eyes squinted with suspicion.
“Just curious. Besides, you and I still don’t really know each other that well.” Logan watched Roman’s expression for any ulterior motive, only to find sincere curiosity.
“Big Hero Six, the protagonists use their brains instead of brawn to defeat the antagonist.” Logan turned to watch the concrete again, eyes following a lone ant looking for any speck of food. “Hunchback, firstly because I have a soft spot for Victor Hugo, and secondly because it has my favorite songs and some of the most relatable and interesting characters. Lion King, mainly because it has some of the greatest quotes, including my favorite. You know Mufasa’s speech to Simba?”
“The ‘everything the light touches is our kingdom,’ one,” Roman asked as Logan picked a crumb from the pizza box, setting it in the path of the ant. Both of them smiled as the ant picked up the crumb, happily starting back toward its colony.
“No, the one about the stars and the great kings of the past watching over us.” Logan’s head tilted up, the sky turning inky where it had been orange moments ago. The stars were invisible due to the street lamps everywhere, but Logan smiled nonetheless. He knew they were there. He was comforted by the knowledge that they were watching over him.
Roman smiled at the stars glittering in Logan’s eyes. He might not be able to see them in the sky, but he could always marvel at the galaxies in Logan’s onyx eyes, at his soft smile.
Logan just about jumped out of his skin when his phone started buzzing madly in his pocket. Taking it out, his eyes widened at the number. It didn’t have a contact name, but Logan clearly recognized the number. Thumb hovering over the green phone icon, Logan took in a deep breath.
“We disappoint, we disappear,” he mumbled, the words barely audible to Roman, “we die, but we don’t.” Swiping the red icon, Logan slipped the phone back into his pocket. Roman almost asked who that was, what was wrong, but something made him hold his tongue. Maybe it was the way the stars had faded from Logan’s eyes, maybe it was the way his shoulders were starting to collapse in on themselves, maybe it was the way his hand moved up to grip at his hair.
Roman wasn’t quite thinking when he laid a hand on Logan’s back. He felt Logan’s back tense under his palm, but he didn’t pull away, rubbing at the tension in his back and shoulders.
“So, you like Victor Hugo, huh?” Roman hoped to whatever God there is that his voice was level enough to seem nonchalant. “Is Les Miserables included in that?” Logan finally seemed to relax as he went on a tangent about Les Mis and Victor Hugo’s other novels and poetry and everything he could think of. He didn’t seem to feel himself leaning closer into Roman as he talked, relaxing into Roman’s side.
They stayed there, talking until the sky was black and Target closed. By the time they were back in Roman’s car, Logan was half asleep and the clock read 11:08. When Roman asked where Logan wanted to go, Logan didn’t respond beyond a grunt when Roman suggested Virgil.
“11:11,” Roman announced softly when he checked the clock at a stoplight. “Make a wish.” Roman expected some kind of scoff or eye roll from Logan, but there was nothing. Silence filled the car, the red light turned to green and Roman started driving again. Something in the back of his mind wondered if Logan’s wish had been anything like his own.
I wish we could spend every night like this.
