Simon and Tommy had a complicated relationship as brothers. 

At a young age, Simon basically wrote himself off as a lost cause, and did the best he could to make sure at least Tommy had a chance to be a functioning human being. After all, Tommy was the gentler brother, the dreamer, the one who looked like their mother (who'd walked out on them years ago to escape their father). But Tommy got bitter, got sick of the one always being protected, being babied. He lost respect for Simon, for the way he wouldn't fight back, and in a twisted way, grew closer to his father as a way to learn how to be powerful, strong. It backfired, and Tommy got wrapped up in some bad business.

Simon's kid brother died while he was deployed. He got the news in the letter, and it broke him in a big way. In the story timeline, it was years and years ago but it still hurts like hell whenever Simon thinks about him.

ykw. the ghost comics have him telling his story to a bunch of ukrainian school kids so i would presume ghost speaks ukrainian (or russian) and im thinking. how about his family is ukrainian, or at least part of it

it’s not overly present in their home life—ghost’s english father isn’t one for the culture—but ghost’s mother makes sure he and tommy always at least have the language, so if ever afforded the opportunity, they could really experience everything she’d had to leave behind in her wonderful home country.

and language ends up being one of the few things that keeps ghost and tommy’s relationship from ever completely falling apart, even when it is only holding on by threads. it’s what helps them to find common ground when ghost wants to get his brother sober and mend what’d been left broken by their father.

years down the line, language is what keeps the new brotherly bond between them strong. it’s always fun to use to gossip—at some point ghost gets inducted into a knitting group of babushkas with all the drama, one time on leave—and it’s a piece of their mother to remember her by after she’s passed. it’s something necessary to teach joseph, tommy’s son. it’s something to be proud of.

and when ghost eventually brings soap home—language is something to speak with his brother in hushed tones about all the things he admired about johnny without the man ever being privy to it. because ghost doesn’t know if he’s ready to confess those feelings just yet. language is what tommy then uses to tease his brother about his crush and urge him to get on with it, it’s clear that soap feels the same way.

The tragedy of Tommy and Simon Riley as brothers is so so much fun and also so painful, especially from Tommy's PoV because there's so little on him (and knowing the comics this is a blessing in disguise)

This is almost entirely fictional extrapolation, and I doubt that Tommy will ever be more than those 14 panels in a shitty comic series. But SHIT. Tommy and Simon Riley. If only they had more time.

Like. This is your big brother. He was taken a year ago, and now his body sits on his side of the couch in your childhood home. It doesn't matter because your big brother is never coming back, and you'll spend the last months of your life waiting for the body to reveal where those men buried him.

You don't know it yet but you're going to die on Christmas Eve. You and your family will be killed mercilessly and swiftly by people you never knew existed.

You put all this time, this love, this discipline into rebuilding your life and making something better out of yourself, trying to break this old cycles of abuse and violence. You try to define your life by creation and care, and you still die. You were always going to be the sacrificial lamb because this was never your story to begin with.

Your brother is going to die screaming, clutching your bloody corpse like he held you at birth, like he held you at seventeen and sweating out months of opiate abuse and begging him to let you go, like he held you on your wedding day when you were terrified of what the future held. Despite his flaws and despite the rage inherited from your father, he loved you deeply. But you're dead now, and the love has nowhere to go. And it becomes grief becomes rage becomes vengeance. A husk wanders the earth, now. Tearing out the throats of its aggressors in a road of destruction. Not to right any wrongs, but to give back the violence by which it'd been treated.

Riley family photo! 🥺 Mama Riley, Simon, Joseph, Tommy and Beth!

Wanted to design Simon's fam for so long, so here we are! And I wrote a bunch more headcanons I have for them, and for the context of this photo being taken, under the cut below!! 🥺 And also, just, huge thank you to all the fic authors out there who expand on Simon's family in their fics, I live so much for all your content 😭🧡

Okay so, as for a lot of the Riley family thoughts I had when I was drawing this artwork. These may kinda be in random order..

So I'm imagining this pic was taken at Simon's mom's house! She had a friend over (or something) when Tommy, Beth(Tommy's wife), baby Joseph, and Simon, who's been visiting for the past week or so, come over.

I'm imagining this is several months post-Roba, but the Roba stuff is still pretty recent. Simon is still wearing the mask because he doesn't want his family or others to see his facial scars too often, but I imagine on some occasions, if it's just him and his fam, he's okay taking it off, but bc they're visiting the mom and she has a friend over he keeps it on.

So I think this is his second time visiting his family post-Roba? He's done some healing, and recovery since then, so he's more stable visiting his family, though I imagine it's still a weird experience for him but he's trying to get better. And yeah he's visiting for a couple weeks here. I wanted him to seem kinda slimmer tho, like he's not hugely bulky bc I imagine he lost a lot of weight in captivity and is still putting weight back on.

Also this is a total side note, but I really love the idea so much that baby Joseph brought Simon out of his shell a lot more post-Roba? Like I imagine he had a really hard time initially learning to bond again and heal, but having little baby Joseph who's too young to judge him and is so innocent, is good for him? 🤣 So on Simon's time visiting his fam he spends a lot of time with baby Jo. I think he'd thank Joseph a lot for helping him come out of his shell post Roba.

Okay, but yeah for the photo!! So Simon , Tommy and them go to visit the mom, maybe to help her move some things, or bring her over some stuff. Simon, who's staying with Tommy (bc he doesn't like to stay at his mom's house as much bc it's the childhood home) comes over too. Maybe they end up all sitting and chatting together, and then maybe Simon's mom asks if the friend can take a family photo of all of them? Bc I bet they have like, so few family photos of them as adults, if any. And so Simon, who I hugely hc hates photos being taken of him 😂 agrees ofc for his mom bc he loves her and wants to make her happy ahaha. And so they all pose for the pic together.

I think Tommy and Simon also look pretty similar, just have different hairstyles/ colours and eye colours. They're unmistakable as brothers if you see them side by side tho lol. And Beth, I imagine she met Tommy when he was in recovery, maybe they were both in some therapy program together (I don't think I hc her as a recovering addict like Tommy, but she had other reasons for being in therapy at that time in her life) and they hit it off. She has red hair bc that's the colour hair she has in the comics, and I like to imagine she's just super radiant and pretty, and maybe a little punk too? XD Or she was in her past, hence the piercings and tattoos. She's also just the coolest lady and happiest mom ever.

Also Beth definitely is trying to convince Mama Riley to get a nose piercing.

After hearing of his brothers death in Mexico Thomas Riley joins the army. He wants to be more like his brother was, wants to be a better person. He passes selections, gets into the SAS, he's on the right track. Why the fuck does Lieutenant Ghost of the 141 look like he's about to fucking murder him?

Tom held the receiver to his ear and listened to it ring. He could see the man tasked with listening in out of the corner of his eye. They wouldn't recognize this number, maybe they wouldn't answer. He'd just leave a message, but truly he wished-

"Hello?" It was Beth.

"Hey Lov- er, HI, Beth." He wasn't sure where they stood.

"Tom?"

"Yeah."

"Oh thank heavens." Rustling on the other end. Tom could easily imagine she'd just slumped over the kitchen island. The same kitchen island she'd found him slumped against half conscious He'd seen her do it so many times, any time someone on the other end of the phone gave her news that offered relief. So she'd wanted to hear from him? "It's been almost six months, Tom." She sounded tired. She had two young boys to care for, she had a right to be tired.

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I know." He could've called five months ago. He could've called three months ago. He could've called last week. He had two minutes. "I, er, I've been busy. Been training. Practicin' the CQB. Selections is today. In a few minutes, in fact." He swallowed. His throat was so dry, Beth could probably hear it through the line.

"The SAS, then?"

"Yeah."

"Hmmm."

The clock ticking on the wall was maddening. One minute. Nut up, Riley.

"H-how's Mum?" A frog could've said it clearer.

"She's... oh, y'know... she's coping." Right. Coping. 'The damn army is gonna take both my sons from me! Queen and country, what about your poor mother!?" He wondered if anyone patched the hole in the wall, or replaced the lamp. "Just popped down to the shop with Jo," Beth continued. "'S just me 'n Si-"

"I'm gonna have to hop off, here." He scrambled to stop her sentence. "Gotta... gotta do this." The plastic of the phone groaned under the pressure of him white knuckling it. Beth could probably hear that too.

"Hey." Tom closed his eyes. He deserved whatever tongue lashing he got, but he wished she'd yell. It would be easier. "Y'know, the way we left things..." she sighed. "I miss you. I'm sorry." It would be so much easier if she'd just yell.

"Joseph doesn't deserve a father like that. Not some j-.... The boys, they deserve a father they can be proud of. Not the man I was. But the man I'm becoming." A man like him.

"The man you are, Thomas." Not yet. Maybe not ever. But he'd be damned if he didn't try. "I'm proud of you.... He would be too."

Tom exhaled slowly, desperately grasping at the last of his composure. "Wish me luck." Far from steady, but at least his voice hadn't cracked.

"You don't need me to. You'll do fine."

"If, er, if things go to plan, and I get in, I should still be on track to have some leave. Three weeks."

"You'll come home?" The hope in her voice is what broke him.

"If you'll have me?" There was still an out. She could still send him away. He'd understand if she did.

"Please."

soap figures he’d likely be the one to propose to ghost—though that’s no problem to him at all. he knows ghost has fears surrounding family and loved ones after he’d just barely saved them from getting killed at the hands of old, brainwashed comrades, so soap has no problem initiating that step of their relationship, if ghost were to accept. he’s more than happy to.

except, when the time comes… he feels underprepared. he’s done everything he could think of needing to do—buying the ring, setting a date, picturing the perfect moment. bracing himself for rejection, imagining the wedding. everything. except… he hadn’t asked anyone for permission.

god knows that even if ghost’s father was alive he’d never go to that man, not after the stories he’s been told. and he’d be inclined to ask ghost’s mother, but he doesn’t have an excuse to drive out to her home in the countryside that wouldn’t have ghost suspicious.

so his next best bet? simon’s brother. who lives in the same city, and who soap could easily stop by to speak with without ghost cluing in.

soap sits down with him—beth is on her way home from work, and joseph is at a friend’s house—and lays out the whole thing. no beating around the bush, no excuses or half-truths. his proposal is plain and simple: he wants to marry simon, but only if tommy thinks it’s a right fit. because tommy is one of the most important people in ghost’s life, and it’s imperative soap gets his opinion.

once everything is said, tommy is silent for a long moment, and it feels like torture. soap is worrying tommy isn’t going to allow it when his face breaks out into a smile and he claps john on the shoulder saying you’d better damn well make an honest man out of that miserable prick. god knows how much he loves you.

and, well. if that’s not just the kind of reassurance he needed.

I need teen!Soap and teen!tommy is meet in public one day like Soap recognizes him from going over to the house to visit and is like “oh you’re Tommy Riley” and Tommy is like “O-o?! Do I know you?!” And Johnny is like “no but I know you” and they instantly hit it iff

I just feel like Johnny and Tommy have little brother energy and he , Gaz, and soap would get into such shenanigans and bother ghost in a positive way

Simon getting pestered by both of his brothers and his boyfriend. He didn’t even see it coming, just was suddenly bombarded with a group chat. Memes with him at the focus, embarrassing stories involving him. It took Simon a moment to realize that this group chat had been around for a moment and he was just recently added. Kyle and Johnny were telling Tommy things he could’ve lived without another person knowing, especially the person who could easily tell his mother.

Tommy was in France during school so it wasn’t like Simon had the option to immediately get back at him in person. But Kyle and Johnny did not share the fortune of living out of country. So, yes, they were going to get pranked. And Hong-Jin seems more than willing to help. Simon should have plenty of practice by the time Tommy comes for another visit.

Alive Riley's AU that I'm going to start writing tomorrow.

Ok so it's a normal day on base when Beth called Simon up informing (not asking he doesn't get choice) but she's coming to the base. Simon just sighed and accepted his fate happy to see her. She was truly a lovely woman and if he wasn't so in love with Johnny and she wasn't so in love with Tommy he'd absolutely date her. She had appeared at the gate and demanded to be let in.

When the guards figure out who she was they quickly ushered her in not wanting to upset the lieutenants sister-in-law. Ghost was informed and made his way out to meet her in full gear from training earlier that day.

She had made her way to the mountain of a man and started asking questions. 'What have you eaten today?' 'Have you eaten enough?' 'Are you coming home next weekend?' so on and so forth. Simon is absolutely blushing under the mask not used to the mothering still, but Beth pays him no mind.

Recruits have stopped to stare at the inflatable lieutenant being coddled by a random red-headed lady. Price had made his way outside and spotted to pair and makes his way over with a smile. Beth heard the crunch of gravel and turned to meet the other man. She then proceeded to do the same to him ignoring Price's spluttering and insistence he was fine.

'No I know how you military men are always insisting you're fine and you're not. How else am I supposed to make sure you're okay?' Beth accused and Price blushed advertising his eyes. Laswell and Beth were the only two that could ever get the 141 under heel. Both wore it with a badge of honor and never failed to flaunt it over them.

Gaz and Johnny are laughing from the sidelines until Beth turns on them as well
