Ateez: Going On We Got Married
Kim Hongjoong:
Tumblr media
Anxious was the word to describe Hongjoong when he was about to meet his 'wife'. He kept looking over at the camera man, waiting for the signal that would allow him to open the door to the room where you were already waiting in, another camera crew capturing your reaction as well.
"I can go in now?"
Getting the ok, Hongjoong took a deep breath and opened the door. He peeked his head in and burst into a nervous giggle when he saw you. You in turn, covered your face to hide your blushing cheeks. The situation was just so funny and new to both of you rookie idols that you couldn't help but be shy.
"I guess I'll introduce myself. Hi, I'm Ateez's leader, Kim Hongjoong." He bowed to you.
"Hi, I'm [insert group name and position], L/N Y/N." You responded awkwardly.
The staff couldn't help but chuckle and 'aww' at your cute interactions.
"We're already like a newlywed couple. Can't even look at each other in the eyes." You pointed out.
"I'm sorry, it's just....... it makes me more nervous knowing I got such a pretty wife." Hongjoong confessed.
His comment made you cover your face once again.
"Oh thank you. You're very handsome as well." You complimented him, and Hongjoong swore his heart stopped for a minute.
"Can we get you two to pose together for a few pictures for the fans and viewers?" The director asked.
It was awkward at first, trying to figure out how to position yourselves.
"Is it ok if I touch you?" Hongjoong wanted permission before laying any finger on you.
You nodded and he instantly wrapped his arm around your waist, pulling you close to him. Both of you could feel your hearts pounding against your chests, you wondered if the other could hear it. But the awkwardness was soon gone and you both got very comfortable with each other, capturing some very cute and adorable photos that the viewers were going to eat up. In no time, were you guys about to become the most popular couple, both on and outside the show.
Park Seonghwa:
Tumblr media
It had been a month into your 'married' life and it was time for a new challenge chosen specifically by your fans. Seonghwa and you entered into the location given to you and were confused when you guys saw it was a daycare center. You both looked at the director for an explanation.
"The challenge fans wanted to see you do was the daycare challenge. For the day, you'll transform into caregivers and take care of the kids here."
Both you and Seonghwa looked dumbfounded.
"What is this?" You laughed slightly at the situation your fans decided to put you in.
"Ahh really Atiny?" Seonghwa shook his head.
Soon you both changed into the proper attire and after going through a quick tutorial with the women in charge, you guys proceeded to go meet the kids. It actually proved to not be so hard and both of you were having fun with them. It surprised both of you to see you were actually good with kids.
"I had so much fun." You told Seonghwa when you went back to your 'home.'
"You were so good with the kids. They really loved you." Seonghwa said as he picked at his plate of food.
"You were not bad yourself. Remember the baby that wouldn't stop crying until you held him? I bet Atinys will love it." You smiled at the memory.
Seonghwa blushed and was hesitant to ask, but he really wanted to know.
"Do you think you'd ever want kids?"
You instantly lit up at the question.
"Of course I do! I'd love to have a family of my own one day."
Seonghwa wasn't surprised, he knew you were the mom in your group, just like him. It was something you two bonded over when you first met. You looked up from your food to see him staring intently at you.
"What?" You asked.
He only smirked before saying "I bet we'd make really cute babies" and winking at you.
You almost choked on your food, causing Seonghwa to laugh at your flustered state. You blushed intensely and threw a towel at him.
"Yah Park Seonghwa!" You nagged at him.
Jeong Yunho:
Tumblr media
Yunho and you looked at the place you were staying at during the duration of your 'marriage'. It is definitely cute and had a lot of room. You two looked around the place like little kids, excitedly pointing out so many things. It was when you both looked at your bedroom that reality hit: you were going to be sleeping with a total stranger cause room only had 1 bed.
Yunho looked over at you and could sense how tense you got. Quickly, he nudged you with his elbow.
"If you want, I'll do something to really annoy you and we get in a fight." He suggested
"Why would we do that?" You asked, completely baffled by his suggestion.
"So you can send me to sleep on the couch and you sleep here. You know, like an actual married couple." He actually held two thumbs up and had a goofy smile on his face.
You burst out laughing at him. He never failed to make you laugh.
"No, I'd feel bad. Besides, your long limbs wouldn't fit in the couch."
Soon nighttime came and both of you were getting ready to go to bed. Yunho was currently in the king sized bed, playing around on his phone when you came out of the bathroom, face clean and makeup free. Yunho dropped his phone and just stared in awe.
"Stop looking at me like that! I'm already self conscious about being bare faced in the camera." You exclaimed.
Yunho only smiled lovingly at you. "Trust me, you have nothing to be self conscious about. You're absolutely beautiful."
You blushed but quickly got over it and got into bed with him.
"You better not kick me in your sleep." You warned him.
"I won't. I'll just do this."
With no warning, Yunho tangled his long arms and legs around you, encapsulating you into a giant embrace.
"No! Stop! I don't like it!" You shouted half heartedly.
"Don't lie, you know you love it. And if you don't, get used to it. You're stuck with me for a long time.... wifey." He teased you.
Kang Yeosang:
Tumblr media
"Eek! I'm going to fall!"
You squealed as you tried to balance yourself on Yeosang's skateboard. It was the challenge set for you: you two had to share with each other your favorite hobbies and experience them together. The day before, you already had Yeosang try out [insert hobby here] and you two had lots of fun.
Now it was his turn and he was already excited about showing you his skateboarding skills, but nothing made him happier than teaching you a few things.
"No no no. It's ok. I got you ok?"
Yeosang carefully held your hands, slowly pulling you forward as you kept both feet on the board, trying not to think about losing your balance.
"What if I fall and mess up my face? I'll lose my source of income!"
Yeosang chuckled. It was one of the things he loved about you: your sense of humor even when you were scared to death.
"Don't worry. I won't let you fall, I'll catch you."
You and Yeosang shared a heartfelt smile and continued on with him pulling you. Everything was going great, until a dog suddenly rushed past both of you, making you lose your balance and almost toppling to the ground. Luckily, true to his word, Yeosang stopped you from getting hurt, locking you in a tight embrace. You both stood still for a moment, getting over the shock of what could have happened.
"Are you ok?" Yeosang asked, looking you up and down to make sure nothing was damaged.
"Yeah.... I'm fine. Thank you."
Neither of you let go for a while, you just stared into each other's eyes, simultaneously leaning on closer and closer before one of the staff following you two accidentally sneezed, making you two remember where you were.
"Are you going to add special effects and a drama ost in the background when this airs?" You asked so casually causing the entire staff to burst out laughing.
"Please play either the Goblin soundtrack or Boys Over Flowers, make it more sentimental." Yeosang added.
He picked up his skateboard.
"I think we've had enough for today."
"Yeah. I don't want to have my life threatened once again." You agreed.
"I told you I'd catch you didn't I? And I did. But now you need to catch something..." Yeosang paused and looked at you.
"What?" You tilted your head.
He hesitated before reaching into his sweater and then pulling out a finger heart.
"My heart!" He exclaimed in a cute voice.
Choi San:
Tumblr media
From the start, you two were viewer's favorite couple. Your interactions were just so cute and adorable they couldn't help but eat them up. San was especially happy when he found out you were to be his 'wife', he already admired you since you debuted, but with this new experience, he knew for sure he had fallen for you.
It was more than a month into your marriage and you two had yet to share your first kiss. Everyone else already had theirs but you two. It just seemed you two never had the perfect opportunity to do it. But San was determined to make the moment, not for the fans or viewers but for himself. That's how you two ended up on a late night picnic date.
"Oh my God San!" You almost cried at how beautiful the scene was.
There were lights decorating the nearby trees, flower arrangements at every corner and fake candles around the blanket for your picnic.
"I hope I like it." He said shyly.
"I love it! Oh my God! It's beautiful." You couldn't help but hug him tightly.
You spent most of the date eating the delicious food he prepared and overall talking, with music playing from his phone. When a certain slow song came up, he stood up and held his hand out to you.
"May I have this dance?"
Of course you couldn't refuse him. Not when he smiled at you with his pure and sweet smile. You stood up and allowed him to wrap his arms around your waist, you in turn put them on his shoulders. You two just swayed to the music. You could hardly look at him in the face, you were still too shy around him.
San, however, took his chance and proceeded to dip you like in the movies, catching you by surprise. You looked at him and saw something different in his eyes.
"Can I...?" He asked you.
You smiled and nodded, knowing full well what he wanted. San leaned down and softly pressed his lips against yours. You returned the kiss, your hands going to to the back of his head. Even when he lifted you back up, San never broke the kiss, he simply deepened it and pulled you closer like his life depended on it. He completely forgot about the cameras and didn't care at that moment.
When he finally pulled back, he scanned your face to see your reaction. You were blushing and smiling widely at him.
"Was it ok?" He asked.
"It was perfect. You're perfect." You assured him, pecking his lips once more before laying your head on his chest.
San released a breath he didn't know he was holding. He felt truly happy having you in his arms. He simply grinned like a fool in love.
Song Mingi:
Tumblr media
"Everyone, today as you can see, my lovely wife and I are going to cook breakfast together. As you all know, I'm actually an expert in pancakes."
You only rolled your eyes at Mingi's comments towards the camera, knowing full well he can't boil water to save his life. You were so focused on mixing the batter, you didn't notice he took one of the cameras and started coming closer to you with it.
"Here we see our pretty Y/N barefaced. She looks even more beautiful than she usually does today."
You looked over to see a camera all over your face, flustering you.
"Stop." You told him, trying to hide your face.
"I'm only trying to share your beauty to the world! Let me finish!" He protested, trying to film more of your face.
You responded by holding up a wooden spoon and threatening to swat him with it, making him quickly run away.
"This should count as domestic abuse!" He exclaimed.
You had Mingi watched the pancakes while you tried to set up the table. You took your time trying to make everything look as pretty as possible when a high pitched scream made you run back into the kitchen.
"What did you do?!" You shouted as you took in the smoke emanating from the pan.
"I swear I didn't do anything!" Mingi shouted.
"Yeah I can see that!"
You proceeded to put out the smoke that was now causing the smoke detector to go off. You thanked god none of the staffs were there with you at the moment cause they would have been losing their minds.
Once you got the situation under control, you looked at the completely burnt pancakes, your hard work gone to waste. You blinked slowly, trying to process what happened.
"I'm sorry Y/N....I really didn't mean- Oh god. You're mad aren't you?"
You looked over at poor Mingi, who looked so guilty and afraid of your reaction. You couldn't find it in yourself to stay mad at him.
"It's ok. I'm glad no one got hurt."
Mingi was taken aback when you hugged him, laughing softly at the situation. He started laughing with you.
"Does that mean you'll allow me to help you again?" He asked with hope in his eyes.
"Not a chance."
Jung Wooyoung:
Tumblr media
It was finally the part of the show where you two had to meet your parents. Wooyoung and you were very much nervous even if it was just for fun and entertainment. You all met up at a restaurant and introduced everyone. It was difficult at first, your families trying to get used to being filmed and you two trying to make sure everyone was comfortable. But soon both your parents were having a good time poking fun at your expense.
"Honestly mom, what was your reaction when you found out who I was marrying?" Wooyoung had a smile plastered on his face.
"Truthfully.....I'm still not sure how she puts up with you and your loud mouth." His mom spoke honestly, causing everyone to erupt in laughter.
Wooyoung simply poked his cheek with his tongue, not very amused by the comment.
"If you ask me, I thought he'd get annoyed with Y/N." Your dad piped in.
"Why me?! What did I do?!" You exclaimed at your father's comment.
"You hardly talk and when you do, you tend to nag like an old lady."
Now it was Wooyoung's turn to laugh at you, and you simply glared at him.
"I do not!" You protested.
"Yes you do!" Wooyoung said.
The conversation soon took a better turn.
"In all seriousness sir, what kind of guy would you prefer your daughter to marry?" Wooyoung couldn't help his curiosity.
"Well I...."
All of you looked forward to his answer.
He turned to look at Wooyoung and patted his back.
"I actually like you for her very much."
Everyone was surprised by that, even Wooyoung himself.
"Right? I feel like they have such good chemistry together. I'd want Y/N as my actual daughter in law."
You blushed when his mother added her opinion.
"Would you guys consider dating for real?"
You and Wooyoung looked at each other. Sure things started off rocky with you, but over time you learned to put up with each other and found out you actually complimented each other. Wooyoung's extroverted personality helped you become less shy and not worry too much about things, whereas your calm nature helped Wooyoung to have more patience and self control. You actually couldn't imagine what it'd be like without each other in your lives anymore.
"Well I mean.....our parents approve, our fans ship it and we definitely are cute together....what do you say?" Wooyoung winked at you.
Choi Jongho:
Tumblr media
It was the final filming of the show. Jongho and you were supposed to sit down and look back at all the fan favorite moments you had together and also answer a few questions they left for you.
"Is there any clip you hope made it into the top 5 moments?" The director asked.
"For me it's when I serenaded Y/N on our first date." Jongho answered.
You smiled at the memory. "That was cute."
"Were you surprised by my beautiful voice?" He asked you.
"I was more surprised by the fact you split my apple in half." You responded.
"I see how it is. You only like me for my strength, not my talent." He fake pouted, causing you to laugh.
You guys had your eyes fixed on the screen, watching the clip of when you first met and the reactions you had backstage without the other knowing, now watching what each of you really thought.
"Wow! You seriously thought I was going to be a boring stick in the mud!" Jongho was offended when he saw your interview when you said you thought your marriage would be boring.
"I'm sorry! You came in all intimidating onto the set! I was scared of you!" You explained why you thought that way then.
"You were scared?! You were wearing all black when I saw you! I thought you were planning to hex me or something with your creepy aura!" Jongho exclaimed.
"My stylist picked that outfit!" You said.
"Is her stylist here? I want a word with them."
The rest of the filming spent in laughs and reminiscing about the past weeks between you two and eventually the cameras stopped rolling and it was officially over............
It was over on the show, but not for you two.
"I'll pick you up after we're done with recording ok? I love you Y/N." Jongho smiled and pressed a kiss to your lips.

Do You Love the Color of the Sky
(pls don’t scroll it’s not that post)
AO3
Masterpost- Previous- Next
Summary: Not being able to see green must suck, but Patton pitied his soulmate more for being stuck with him.
Content Warning: Swearing, Food
Day 26 Queerplatonic Intruality, background Logince-  You can't see shades of your soulmate's eye color until you meet and look into each other's eyes for the first time.
Do you love the color of the sky?
Patton scrolled through the ridiculously long post and sighed. He liked most of them but the shades of blue always looked so dull. A lot of people reposted this particular picture set because it was the easiest way to tell what color eyes your soulmate has. Which led to a lot of bored scrolling.
If not for the lack of blue in his life, Patton would have assumed he didn't have a soulmate. It just didn't make sense to him as a concept. He loved all his friends and cared about the people he met in his day to day life, he didn’t feel like anything was particularly missing.
Other than the color blue, that is. He stared at his own green eyes and chuckled sadly. His poor soulmate had never seen summer leaves or blades of grass, probably never liked Luigi as a character, hated driving, and wouldn't recognize Patton's pride flags. Patton had learned about the aromantic spectrum and a lot of his feelings had clicked into place. Romance just wasn't his thing and he was happy. He did worry about disappointing his blue-eyed soulmate. How awful to be tied with someone who won't love you romantically.
Patton's best friend since middle school had managed to find his brown-eyed soulmate at a local cafe. Logan didn't say much but Patton could tell he was ecstatic under the calm exterior. And from the sound of it, Roman was quite the romantic which flustered Logan. Patton was happy for them, really.
"You know, Pat, I could try to set you up on a blind date," Patton looked up at Roman with confusion.
"Oh no, they're blind?" Patton couldn't imagine not being able to see at all.
"Why would you suggest that, Roman. His eyes are only green," Logan interjected from the kitchen where he was preparing dinner for his soulmate and friend. Roman had been the one who insisted on inviting Patton and this idea was probably the reason why.
"No, they aren't blind. A blind date is when you go on a date with someone you haven't met before. I could set everything up! I've got the perfect man in mind-" Roman started rambling excitedly.
"Don't tell me it's your brother," Logan scolded.
"It's my brother, but that's not the point!"
"Don't you think you've put Remus through enough humiliation?" Logan turned, shaking a wooden spoon at Roman menacingly.
"I mean, I doubt he's my soulmate and I'll probably disappoint him, but I'll meet your brother if he's okay with it," Patton fiddled with the napkin holder, trying to diffuse the argument by agreeing. What did he have to lose?
"Fantastic! I'll call him right now!" Roman jumped up from the table, phone in hand.
"Roman! Dinner's almost done, just leave it alone!" Logan called with an exasperated sigh, "sorry, Patton. He does this to everyone."
"It's fine, Lo. A low-pressure date might be nice?" Patton shrugged.
Roman had the whole date set up before dinner was even done. He decided the two would meet for a picnic at the local park that weekend. Patton didn’t even have to say a word and it was all planned out. Logan shook his head but gave his soulmate a small smile.
The day of the picnic arrived. Roman had done everything to get this set up for the two, excited at the possible connection for his brother and new friend. Patton just rolled with it, bringing a small cake he'd made to share.
He found the picnic and spotted Roman talking with a man who looked oddly similar and dissimilar to him at the same time. Patton figured they must be brothers and hesitated several yards away.
The man couldn't look any more different from Patton if he tried. His hair was dyed and Patton thought he spotted the glint of a piercing on his lip just under a trim mustache.  For some reason, he'd decided on a black and green mini skirt and fishnet stockings with a ripped My Chemical Romance shirt. It certainly contrasted with Patton's sky grey polo, grey cardigan, and khaki slacks.
Patton took a few deep breaths to try and remember that this wasn't likely to work and was mostly to humor Roman. He'd be nice to Remus. Maybe meet him again at a Christmas party where they both laugh at Roman's poor matchmaking. End of story.
Roman spotted him and waved Patton over, more excited than a puppy brought home from a shelter.
"Patton! Let me introduce you to Remus," Roman grabbed his wrist to yank him the rest of the way over, "I think you guys are really going to hit it off!"
Remus stared at the ground, looking embarrassed. Patton felt really bad as Roman must put him through this all the time. He offered a hand and a warm smile which he took but Remus wouldn't meet his eyes. He was fine with that.
"Alright, I'll leave you two alone to start building chemistry. Good luck!" with that Roman turned and left and Remus let out an exasperated sigh before sitting down on the blanket.
"You don't have to stay. I know he probably paid you or something," Remus muttered at Patton.
"No, I agreed to try, no bribes. I'm sorry if I'm embarrassing you," Patton smiled sadly, kneeling down on the other side of the blanket.
"It's not you, Patton. It's him. He's obsessed with finding my soulmate ever since I told him…" Remus got very quiet, picking at one of the threads of his sock.
Patton urged him to continue, "you told him what?"
"That I'm ace. No one is ever gonna be happy with me so why try?" Remus picked up a rock and threw it hard, "he doesn't believe me and thinks I'm just giving up. I wish he'd just fucking listen to me!"
"Oh, is that all? Gosh, I'm sorry, Remus. I totally get it though! Have you asked him to stop putting you in uncomfortable situations?" Patton was so relieved he forgot that Remus wouldn't know why.
"Don't you think I've tried?? And yet here you are, probably telling yourself you can change me because all anyone would need to do is get in my pants- skirt- whatever and I'll change my tune! Right?" Remus glared at Patton who looked away quickly.
"N-no… I mean I actually get it. I'm aro and I hear a lot of similar stuff from people who don't get it," Patton explained himself softly.
Remus hit his forehead and flopped down onto his back, staring up at the sky, "oh! Oh, of course... I'm sorry for assuming, Patton."
"It's okay. Let's just enjoy this lunch and what I assume is a beautiful day," Patton laid down and stared at the sky, "is it cloudy today or is the sky actually blue?"
"Oh, it's a brilliant blue today, Pattycake. Have you never seen the blue sky?" Remus asked in amazement.
Patton chuckled, "nope, never seen it. My 'soulmate'-" he used finger quotes "-has blue eyes."
"Oh, well it's about the color of your shirt today," Remus grinned, "so I guess you know the difference between leaves and clouds, huh?"
"Green is a beautiful color," Patton smiled, "I hope someday you get to see it with someone who appreciates you for who you are, Remus."
"Thanks, Patton."
They both laid there in silence for a few minutes before Remus broke it, "so what do you think of horror movies?"
"Too scary to watch alone, but I'll watch with a friend," Patton smiled, "opinion on Bob Ross?"
"A treasure, but I wish he drew fewer happy trees and more sad ones," Remus grinned. They continued bouncing questions off of each other, a few starting heated debates as they ate the picnic and just talked.
It was wonderfully non-romantic. Patton felt understood for the first time in a long while.
Remus became more and more animated as their conversation drifted from movies and games to tattoos (Patton showed him a Spongebob tattoo on his ankle much to Remus' surprise) and careers. Patton was shocked to discover that Remus worked in daycare most days, something he would have never guessed from his attire.
"You like working with kids?" Patton asked cheerfully.
"I get to give them back to their parents at the end of the day and sleep like a rock," Remus laughed and took a bite of cake, "let me guess, you're a baker?"
"Not quite, I help run my parents' Mom and Pop diner and they stick me on dessert duty way too often," Patton happily patted his stomach, "I bet chasing all those kids burns about as many calories as I can bake in a day."
Remus snorted, "maybe I should stop by and find out some time."
"Yeah! I make the best cheesecake- if I'm being humble," Patton laughed.
"I love cheesecake! Can we go now?" Remus sat bolt upright with a large grin on his face.
"Don't we have to clean all this up or wait for Roman?" Patton asked, happy but a little nervous to make Logan’s soulmate upset with him.
"Oh come on!"
"I can always just make you one," Patton replied carefully.
"That would imply seeing you again," Remus smirked at him.
"You seemed to like the idea," Patton smiled hopefully, picking at the grass.
"I love that idea. You're so easy to hang out with, Pat. You really do get it, and I'm sure we could have lots of fun together," Patton looked up, tears in his eyes. He took off his glasses and wiped them with the sleeve of his cardigan before meeting Remus' gaze with a smile.
Something in the back of his head clicked. He watched as Remus blinked in confusion and started looking around wildly. Patton felt just as confused until he noticed the sky.
He fell back down on the blanket and stared up at the brilliant depths of blue in the cloudless sky. He could almost feel how far it stretched into the void of space and was utterly in awe, tears streaming down from the corners of his eyes and down his ears. It was magnificent.
Patton lay there crying until his view was blocked by two navy blue eyes, sparkling with joy and streaming tears as well. Patton smiled and opened his arms for a hug which Remus gladly fell into.
Roman came back and found them in each other’s arms, laying on the blanket and talking about everything they couldn't tell anyone else before. Patton made sure later to tell him off for how he'd treated Remus but also thanked him for setting up the date.
They weren't dating. It was something different, but they were happy. And Patton really did love the color of the sky.

Today we got up, took the kids on an off road hike, it was 95 and so hot, but it felt so good to be outside and dare I say I enjoyed sweating? What’s happening to me?! Then we picked up to-go Mexican and feasted living room picnic style - a fun thing where we take the bench from the dining room, and lay the food out and watch a movie -
Tumblr media
Today was Raiders is the Lost Ark and it’s an all time fav. I had veggie fajitas and splurged on a handful of chips - they were divine.
Once lilith was down for a nap, we took an epic one ourselves. It’s so funny that napping is this super treat anymore. When we got up, we took the kids for ice cream then went on a short walk at the park. So perfect.
Then I did the thing I’ve been neglecting for too long - I weeded my garden. It’s totally taken a back seat this year and I have a handful of heirloom tomato plants and a cucumber, some red lettuce and purple kale. I need to plant my winter squash and I hope too tomorrow. It felt amazing to get out and play in the dirt. It was 100 degrees as the sun was setting and sheer bliss.
We did manage to get Lilith’s room finished this weekend. I have the dishes and some laundry going now. I’ll take the glass recycling, plastic and some cardboard tomorrow when I drop the reg papers for Lilith’s daycare, and I’m pushing her to start in September. I don’t think school will start in time, and if it does, we’ll just figure something out.
We’ll try to move the heavier furniture from Jamis’ room this week, and order the peg boards. This rearrangement is in part for his birthday - which is in a few weeks. I can’t believe he’ll be 6!
Wishing everyone a beautiful close to the weekend. Much love xx

Lol so I tortured @youngjusticeslut a bit with some little drabbles on Jade coming home at the end of season three. This is an extension of those! Hope you all enjoy!
Jade doesn’t want to open her eyes. Last night she had the most amazing dream. The danger was over. She was able to return to Will and Lian. She’d held Lian all day, the little cuddle bug refusing to let her go. Will had kissed her every moment that Lian wasn’t looking. She’d fallen asleep in her husband’s arms, holding her daughter’s hand.
Such a lovely dream.
“Mommy,” A soft whisper from behind her. A tiny body climbs over her, making Jade open her eyes. Lian crawls over her and slides off the bed,” I go potty then more cuddle time!”
Jade smiles. It wasn’t a dream,” Ok, li. Do you need help?”
“Nope! I a big girl!” Lian toddles happily from the room. Jade watches her, trying not to cry at the sight of her little girl walking confidently to the potty. She feels Will’s arm wrap around her belly and he presses a kiss to the back of her neck.
“She’s not usually this happy in th—” Jade turns, cutting him off with a feverish kiss. She’d miss this. Waking up in his arms. Feeling his lips against hers, his body against hers. He holds her close and lets her kiss him like when they were 19. Before they had anything to really fight for. Before they really loved each other.
“I thought it was a dream, red.” Jade whispers, not pulling away from his mouth. He chuckles. His bread scratches her chin and nose but she doesn’t care.
“Not possible. My dreams can’t compare to the reality of my wife being home.” He would kiss her again, but Lian toddles back into the room. She giggles.
“You kiss mommy! You kiss mommy!” Jade isn’t sure how Lian knows. It doesn’t matter. Will is out of bed and has their daughter held upside down,” Daddy! Daddy! Down!”
“I dunno,” He looks at Jade,” I think Lian needs to learn what happens when people don’t keep secrets.”
Jade grins. She climbs out of bed and stalks over to her daughter. Lian reaches out for her,” Save me, mommy! Save me from the daddy mosster!”
Jade’s heart melts, but she keeps her grin,” I think not!”
The room fills with Lian’s laughter as Jade tickles her little belly,” No more! No more!”
“Alright no more,” Will turns her right side up, kissing her messy auburn hair. Lian looks at him with her big brown eyes, clearly trying to woo her father into something.
“Do I have school today?”
“No. No daycare today. Daddy’s gonna call in at work too. You, Daddy, and Mommy are going on an adventure today! So go get ready!” Lian toddles out of the room as fast as her little legs can carry her.
“Adventure?” Jade questions. The last family adventure they had involved an assassin filled monastery and the original Roy Harper.
“Sounds more fun than ‘a picnic in a park’” Will answers, wrapping his arms around her again,” Unless you want to do something different?”
Jade shakes her head,” That sounds perfect.”

“Mommy! Watch me!” Lian giggles as she does a little front roll on the grass. Jade leans against Will’s chest, both of them watching their daughter run around.
“Look at that, Li! You’re going to be doing back flips before you know it.”
“If her uncle Dick has any say, she will.” Will chuckles.
“Are you and Boy Blunder ok?”
“We’re better. Good enough to let him watch Lian for us at some point, but I’d prefer your sister.”
“Mommy!” Lian comes running over, this time in tears. Jade is immediately on edge, ready to attack. Then she sees the small cut on her daughter’s knee.
“Oh, Lian. Come here.” Jade pulls Lian into her arms. Jade expertly patches the cut and gives it a little kiss,” All better.”
“Mommy has magic like auntie Zee.” Lian cuddles to Jade’s chest. Jade smiles at the little girl. She looks up as Will taps on her shoulder. He holds up a soccer ball with a smirk.
“I hate you,” Jade rolls her eyes. Lian looks up shocked,” Mommy’s only playing.”
The word feels strange in her mouth, but not wrong. Just unused. They do end up playing soccer, though Lian doesn’t get the concept of not using her hands. Jade catches the toddler and spins her around, both their laughs mixing together beautifully.
By the time they get home, Jade doesn’t want to sleep. Something this good will surely go away when she wakes up.
She’s not ready to give up the feeling as she gives Lian her bath, changing her into warm pajamas. She’s not ready to give up the little girl cuddling the Cheshire cat doll. Jade presses a kiss to her daughter’s head before tiptoeing from the room. Will is on the couch, reading through a work document. She pulls it out of his hand and climbs onto his lap. He looks at her, so many things he wants to say. Jade wants to say some things too, but they have time.
They have time. Just a beautiful thing to be reminded of as he carries her to their room, kissing her passionately. What she was once convinced she never had enough of, she now has in abundance. She will get to watch Lian grow up. Go to parent teacher conferences, deal with nightmares, helping Will with his business. Teaching Lian how to protect herself.
Later, she dozes on top of Will, face pressed against his neck. He traces a pattern up her spine. Her eyes are so heavy. As she drifts to sleep, she hears him whisper,” Welcome home, Mrs. Nguyen-Harper.”
Home.
She’s home.

Lake Day
Okay, this one’s kind of a long one, but I’m so excited about this one. It’s first from Emelia’s POV, and then from Asher’s point of view. Thank you so much for reading and I hope you enjoy!! <3
Slight warning for descriptions of vomiting, and near-death experience??
Emelia POV
I woke up at 7:30am on Saturday morning, a half hour before my alarm was supposed to go off.  I was so excited for today I could barely stand it. I had the whole day planned out for Asher and me, to get his mind off all the stress of his classes and work at the vet clinic. We both had managed to have the same day off. We hadn’t seen each other for close to two weeks. He had tried to plan a quick breakfast date before my class, but that plan went sideways when I came down with the hell flu that had swept its way through the daycare, slowly claiming the children, my coworkers, and me as its victims. I felt horrible, because that was the first time we had seen each other since the semester had started, and Asher spent the better part of a week and half taking care of me. When he wasn’t at work or classes, he was over at my apartment, checking on me, and just keeping me company. Every day between class and work, he would stop by to give me more medicine or make me food. He was way too good to me. I had hoped that this day of fun would be my way of making it up to him. As I sat up in bed, my chest tightened slightly, and I let out a cough into the crook of my elbow. I was mostly over the flu, however there was a slight cough that had lingered still, which was more annoying than anything. I grabbed my phone and shut my 8:00am alarm off, and then went to my messages to send Asher a text.
Me Hey love! Hope you’re ready for today! I can’t wait to spend the WHOLE day with you! No sickness to interrupt our time together either 😉 Meet at my place at 8:30 like we planned?
I grinned, my body shaking with excitement. Even with the stress of classes and work, and not being able to see each other, Asher still made me the happiest I’ve ever been. We started dating when I was a junior in high school, and he was a senior. From day one, he’s always been able to pull me out of my worst moods and make my best moods somehow even better. Even though this semester is the first semester that we’ve both been swamped with college classes and work, it’s not the first time we’ve had to work around his class and work schedule. Since he graduated a year before me, he started at U of I my senior year. It was difficult coordinating schedules, but we made it work, and he made it a lot easier. That was his THING. Asher always made things easier. Now that we’re on the same campus again, it’s been slightly easier to see each other, just by bumping into each other here and there on campus. The buzzing of my phone pulled me out of my thoughts.
Ash <3 I am so ready! Can’t wait to see your beautiful face! How many times do I gotta tell ya? I didn’t mind taking care of you at all, it’s kinda my job, silly 😉 Can’t wait to see what you have planned, Em. See you at 8:30<3
I couldn’t help the giant smile that creeped across my face. How did I get so lucky? I got up off my bed and began packing essentials for the day; sunscreen, towels, change of clothes, etc. I put my swimsuit on and then a tank top and shorts on over it. Heading into the kitchen, I walked by Kat’s room, and knock on the door, which prompted a sleepy groan. I peeked my head into the room.
“Hey, Kat. I’ll be gone at the lake all day with Ash. See you tonight! Enjoy your day off!” I chimed.
“...mmhmm...You too! You two kiddos have fun and don’t get into too much trouble,” she mumbled sleepily and rolled over.
I chuckled and shut the door behind me. I walked into the kitchen and began to pack our lunch for the day. I made Ash’s favorite sandwich and snacks; ham and provolone cheese on white bread, with lettuce, mayo and pickle, and a big bag of Cheetos to go with it. I packed my sandwich and a few waters. I had everything ready, and I sat on the couch to relax. I had scrolled through Facebook until I heard a soft knock on the door, and I practically shot up to make my way to answer it, my heart fluttering in my chest. I opened the door and smiled widely.
“Hey, you,” he said, with a smile as big as mine on his face, his blue eyes lit up. I jumped into his arms and hugged him tight.
“Hi, Ash. I’ve missed you, oh my gosh,” I said, as I lowered myself back onto the floor.
“You too, Emmy. So what ya got planned?” He asked.
“You’ll see,” I said as I winked, and smiled at him.
He laughed, and I swear it was the best thing I had ever heard.
“Oooh...mystery. I like it. Shall we go?” He winked at me, and then helped me take my bags out to the car.
Moments later, we were off on our way.
“C’mon, tell me what we’re doing. I’m dying to know! Pweeeaaassse, Emmy,” he begged, making his lips pucker into the puppy dog face that he knows I can’t ever resist.
“Alright, alright. You can put away the puppy dog eyes, babe. Fine, I’ll tell you. We’re going to the lake. I packed a picnic with your favorite sandwich. AND Cheetos, of course. We’re gonna go swimming, and then lay out a blanket and just RELAX. Things have been crazy, and I just wanted to plan to do something fun and relaxing to spend time together. I love you, and I love how hard you’ve been working, but you need a break, babe,” I take his hand that’s not on the steering wheel in mine, lifted it up to my lips and kissed it.
I looked over at him and watched as his eyes light up with excitement.
“Oh, Em. You’re way too good to me. I love you, baby,” he said, as he squeezed my hand in his.
We continued driving, and talking, and laughing. Gosh, we laughed a lot. At one point, I was laughing so hard, I was out of breath. I felt my chest tighten again, and I was sent into a coughing fit. Asher reached over and rubbed my back.
“Oh, baby. Are you okay? Still haven’t shaken that cough, huh?” His voice was coated with concern.
Once it finally stopped, I sat up.
“No, I guess not. I’m fine though, it hasn’t been bothering me much, just a little here and there, just enough to annoy me,” I rolled my eyes, and shrugged my shoulders to reassure him. I really did think I was fine, but my chest did feel tight. I coughed a few more times, hoping that it would clear up, but the tightness still lingered. I tried to hide my frustration by turning my head and looking out the window. Before I even realized what has happening, I felt Asher’s hand caressing my arm.
“Hey, hey. What’s wrong, baby? W-why are you crying?” He asked, full of worry.
It was then that I realized that I was crying. I lifted my hand up to my face, and wiped the tears off my cheeks, and looked over at him.
“I’m just so tired of this. I’m tired of having this damn sickness mess with our plans. It’s frustrating, and I just want it to go away,” I cried softly.
“Aw, honey. It’s fine. Are you feeling okay right now?”
“Yeah, I’m fine. Just annoyed with this cough is all. I’m fine, promise,” I squeezed his hand.
As we pulled up to the lake, he put the car into park, and made his way to the passenger side. He opened my door, and I hopped out of the car. He wrapped me in a tight hug, and gently rubbed my back. My chest tightened again, and I coughed harshly into his chest. He kissed the top of my head and continued to rub circles onto my back. We stood that way for a few minutes, then pulled away from each other.
“Are you sure you’re gonna be okay? Cause if you need to go home, we will, baby. Don’t push yourself too hard,” he says as grabs our things out of the car.
“No! I’m fine. We drove all the way out here, this is OUR day. Our relax day. I’ll be fine, Ash. I promise.”
I grabbed the picnic basket and walked alongside him as we made our way to a spot to set the blankets down. We found a perfect spot right by the pier.
“Wow, this is beautiful!!” I shouted.
“Yeah, no kidding!! Look at that water!! I’m gonna jump in. Wanna join me?!”
I considered it for a moment, but my chest was still a little tight, so I opted against.
“Nah, I’m good. I’m just gonna relax here for a little bit. Be careful, baby,” I said, cautiously.
“Em, c’mon. I was on the swim team in high school. I got this,” I heard his voice fading away from me as he had already started running to get a head start.
I laughed as I watched him run onto the landing and jump into the water.
“Asher Jones, you’re crazy!!”
I saw and felt a splash as his body hit the water, hard.
The splash had settled and the waves in the water were slowly returning to normal, but his head hadn’t popped up out of the water yet. Wow that must’ve been a bigger jump than I thought..., I thought to myself. Beginning to worry, I looked at the time on my phone. 11:15am. I watched the water intently, looking for any indication of Asher coming back up to the surface. Still nothing. I tried to push down the panic that was setting in. He’s a good swimmer, great, even, but deep down, I had a bad feeling. I’ve seen him jump into water plenty of times, jumping even higher than he did this time, and every time, he was already out of the water by now. I checked my clock again. 11:17am. I go into full panic mode and run to the landing. I jump in, and I feel my body hit the water.
While underwater, I look around, trying to focus instead of panic. I swim down further, desperately looking for something, anything that could lead me to him, somehow. I thought I heard something to my right, so I turned, and there he was. I saw Asher’s leg, tangled up in something I couldn’t really see. I made my way over to his body, and frantically trying to untangle his leg and get him out of here before it was too late. The more frantic I became, the harder it was to focus on the task. I tried to steady myself enough to focus. I finally got his leg untangled and lifted him to the surface. I laid him flat on his back and began doing CPR.
“C’mon, baby, please. Wake up, baby, please. C’mon Ash, you’re okay, baby.” I begged, as tears streamed down my already dripping wet face. I continued to do CPR, until finally, I heard harsh coughing. He rolled over to his side and coughed as water came out of his mouth. Once the coughing stopped, I lifted his head and laid it in my lap, stroking his hair. He opened his eyes and looked up at me, confused and scared.
“Em?” He croaked.
“Asher! Oh my god, Ash. Hi!” I shouted, pulling him even closer to me.
“Em, what happened?”
“I don’t know, exactly. Oh my god. I-I thought I lost you, baby. You jumped in, and you were down in the water way longer than normal, and I-I-I-I p-panicked, and jumped in and at first, I couldn’t find you, but then I found your legs all tangled up in something in the water. I was able to get you untangled and out of the water and had to give you CPR. Do you feel okay?” I asked, panic still coating my voice, which was also shaking.
He let out a few more harsh coughs, then began to speak, his voice improving. “Um, yeah. I think. Can I sit up?”
“Oh, yeah, sure,” I said, as I steadied his body with my hand on his back to help him into a sitting position. Once he was sitting up, I wrapped him in a hug, and didn’t let go until I felt him pull away. It wasn’t until then that my body caught up with all the activity that just happened. I inhaled and turned my head to cough into my elbow for several minutes. When I turned my head back towards Asher, he looked at me with concern in his eyes.
“You okay, love?” he asked.
I shook my head, in absolute disbelief.
With a confused look on his face, he said, “What?”
“I just can’t believe that you are asking me if I’m okay when you literally almost drowned. Asher, I’m fine. Stop worrying about me, for once, please,” I pleaded, desperately.
“Alright, alright,” he said, defensively, with a hint of hurt in his tone.
I looked at him and caressed his cheek. “Oh, love. I’m sorry I snapped, I just got really scared. When I was in the water and I saw your body all tangled up, I-I-I..” my words broke off as I started sobbing uncontrollably, tears falling down my face again.
Asher pulled me closer to him and I cried into his chest.
“Sshhhh…Em, baby. It’s okay. I’m right here. You saved me, you know that? Who knows what would’ve happened if you hadn’t jumped and untangled me. Just relax. Everything’s fine. Let’s go eat our lunch, yeah?” his soothing voice put me at ease and I nodded at him, and got to my feet, reaching my hand down to him to help him up. We walked over to where our blanket was spread out. I reached into the basket and pulled out his sandwich and handed it to him. He took it and smiled.
“Thank you, sunshine. I love that you packed my favorite lunch, and that you planned this whole day for us. It’s perfect, and so are you,” He learned forward and kissed me. He unwrapped his sandwich and took a bite and closed his eyes.
“mmmm...You made it JUST perfect,” he smiled wide.
When we were finished eating, we laid down on the blanket. I laid down on my back and he laid down on his side and laid his head on my chest. I ran my fingers through his hair slowly. We both became so relaxed that we fell asleep. I woke up an hour later, Asher still sound asleep on my chest, lightly snoring. I reached across the blanket and grabbed my phone. It was just after 3pm. I shook Asher awake.
“Ash, baby, wake up. We should head home,” I said, softly.
His eyes fluttered as he sat up and stretched out his arms. We gathered our things together and headed for the car. Ash seemed lethargic, although, it did make sense since he had almost drowned just a few short hours prior. He didn’t seem quite awake enough to drive home, so I told him I would. He slept the whole ride home. I couldn’t help but smile as I took glances at him whenever I could. He looked so peaceful, so relaxed, and worry-free. I’m glad he was getting some much-needed sleep after the past several weeks that he’d had.
As I pulled up to my apartment, I was just about to wake him when I saw him sit up, stretch and unbuckle his seatbelt. He didn’t look any more rested than he did before we got on the road. I decided to leave our things in the car and head inside. I unlocked the door, and we stepped inside. I set my keys down and turned towards him. He looked so exhausted.
“Okay, let’s go lie down, yeah?” I cooed. He nodded, as I wrapped my arm around him for support because he looked like he could collapse at any moment. We made our way into my room and he laid down on the bed. I laid down next to him, and he curled up next to me on my chest, just like he had at the lake, and within minutes, he was asleep. I laid there for a while, just soaking in the events of the day. The day hadn’t gone exactly as planned, but I was happy with our time spent on our day off. Any time spent with Asher is great, but it always helps if things go smooth, of course. I felt his position shift and he rolled over with his back to me.  I grabbed my phone to look at the time. It was 8:30pm. A little earlier than I would normally go to bed, but I felt just as exhausted as Asher looked. It had been a long day. I turned out my nightside table light, cuddled into Asher’s back and drifted off into a peaceful sleep.
                                               ******************
I rolled over onto Asher’s chest, and was immediately startled awake when I felt the heat radiating off his body. I could feel the sweat that had just stuck to him. I gently shook him awake.
“Ash, baby, wake up. I think you have a fever,” I said, reaching my hand up to his forehead, barely even able to touch it because it was so hot.
I ran out of the room to get a thermometer from the bathroom and hurried back to my bedroom. Asher was barely awake. I tried to shake him awake again.
“Baby, wake up,”
I heard him groan, which immediately turned into a deep, harsh coughing fit, and left him curled in on himself, trying to catch his breath. I rubbed his back, trying to soothe him during the fit. While he was laying on his side, I place the thermometer in his ear, and anxiously waited. Beep. I raised the thermometer up slowly to read it, and practically had to sit down when I saw the screen flash the numbers “104.8.”  I ran into the bathroom again to find some medicine to help with the fever. I tried to stay calm, but deep down, I was panicking. I’m never the one to take care of Ash. He’s usually the one that takes care of me. I made my way back into the bedroom once I found what I was looking for.
“Okay, baby, you gotta wake up now. I have medicine for you. We need to get your fever down, honey,” I said as I shook him lightly and helped him get into an upright position, wincing at the chills that were visibly wracking his entire body because of the fever.
“Here, drink this. It’ll bring your fever down and help with the chills,” I say, as I hand it to him, and help him bring it up to his mouth because his hands are too shaky to do it alone.
He rests his head on the headboard, and groans and I can hear the congestion already seeping into his sinuses and his voice.
“Ugh. I fbeel awfbul, Emb,” he moans.
“Oh, honey. You sound terrible. I think you caught my flu, huh?”
“I thbink so,” his eyelids beginning to droop.
“Wait, before you sleep, you need to eat something. You haven’t had anything since we went to the lake yesterday, love,” I said.
His eyes were forming tears. “Cban I jbust eat later? My throat is killing mbe and I just wanna sleep,” he rasped. His breath started to hitch.
“Eh’ktchew! Hi’etchu, es’echu… hihhh! heh’ktchiew! hihhh! heh’ktchiew!”
“Bless you, baby. I’m so sorry.”
He sniffed to clear his nose, but it only sent him into a deep coughing fit that brought tears to his eyes. I kept my hand on his back as the coughing continued.
“Oh, baby. That sounded painful, huh?”
“…mhmm...” he nodded his head, curling in on himself. I couldn’t help but notice how small and vulnerable he looked in that position. I laid down on my side of the bed and lifted my arm up to invite him to lay on my chest. He sat up and slowly moved toward me, finally in a position where he was able to cuddle up into my chest. I combed my fingers through his sandy brown hair, which was damp with sweat from his fever. He let out a few harsh coughs into my chest, and I kissed his fever flushed forehead. Before long, I heard his congested snores. Now that I thought about it, I was exhausted. I hadn’t slept very well the night before. I fell asleep soon after that, his breathing pattern lulling me to sleep.
                                         ***********************
I heard my alarm blaring at 7:00am Monday morning. I tried to quickly roll over to turn it off before it woke Asher up. But as soon as I heard him groaning, and then harshly coughing, I knew it was too late.
“shit,” I whispered, and laid back down on my pillow, reaching over to comfort Ash during the harsh fit that hadn’t stopped yet.
When it finally stopped, he propped himself up by his elbows and looked over at me, eyes beginning to droop again.
“W-why was your…alarm going off?” he asked, his voice cracking.
“It’s Monday, babe. It was my alarm for class,” I caressed his cheek.
“Oh. I thought it was Sunday...”
“No, baby. Yesterday was Sunday. You slept all day, love.”
He nodded his head, closing his eyes, taking a deep breath, and then opening them again.
“Well, we should get going,” he said, as he sat up into a sitting position, about to get out of bed.
“Um, no. There’s no way you’re going to class, and neither am I. You’re WAY too sick to be going anywhere, honey. Here, let’s take your temp, okay?” I reached over for the thermometer and stuck it in his ear, waiting for the beep. 103.6. It was still a bit high for my liking, but it was an improvement from yesterday. I gave him more of the medicine.
“There, that should help some and hopefully bring your fever down more, yeah?” I said, as I kissed his forehead.
He cleared his throat. “Umb, Emb, I-I… Snnfff...nngh. I don’t feel very good.” He moaned, and then his breath hitched and a series of sneezed escaped.
“Eh’ktchew! Hi’etchu, es’echu… Ughhb.”
“Oh honey, I know. I’m so sorry. Come here, love,” I wrapped my arm around his broad shoulders. He rested his head on my chest. I felt his heavily congested breathing, almost in tune with mine. Soon I heard his congested snores against my chest. I sighed. I felt terrible. If I hadn’t let him take care of me, he wouldn’t have caught this. Asher doesn’t get sick that much, I get sick way more often than he does, because my job is a plague ward. He also doesn’t catch my sickness very often, but when he does, it hits him twice as hard as it hit me. That last flu I had, it hit me hard, and it was still lingering, so I can only imagine how hard it was going to hit him. I heard more of his congested snores, and looked down at him, his mouth hanging open. Seeing him sleeping so peacefully made me feel sleepy again, and I let myself doze off.
We slept much of the rest of the day, Asher occasionally being woken up by the harsh coughing and sneezing fits. We both laid awake for about an hour and watched some TV in bed, before we both dozed off again.
                                            **************************
I was woken up the next morning by Asher’s harsh coughing. I sleepily reached my hand over to him and placed it on his back, beginning to rub it softly. I was jolted awake when I heard him gasping desperately for air in between coughs, nearly in tears.
“Oh shit, baby. You’re okay. Shhh,” I tried to soothe him, but as the coughs kept coming, so did his tears. The fit finally tapered off. I reached over to find the thermometer on my nightside table and stuck it in his ear and waited. Beep. I lifted it up to read the screen. 105.2. Shit. Just then, I heard his breath hitch, and a series of loud, congested sneezes escaped his body. I barely heard the knock on my door over the sneezes, which then turned to rugged, deep coughs.
“Yeah?” I yelled out. The door opened, and the head that peeked in was Kat’s. The expression on her face was a mixture of concern and annoyance.
“Who’s dying in h – Oh shit!” she exclaimed, once she saw the blanket sized lump that was Asher sprawled out over my bed, still struggling to catch his breath after the last fit.
“Holy shit, that does not sound good at all,” her voice now filled with concern.
“Yeah, I know. I took his temp Sunday and it was 104.8. I gave him some of that medicine I had in the bathroom from when I was sick a few weeks ago. I took his temp again yesterday, and it came down to 103.6. I just took it again and it’s up to 105.2. I think he caught my hell flu,” I said, glancing back at him. He was curled in on himself, asleep already.
“Uh, Em. I think this is worse than a flu. That cough sounds way too bad to be a flu. We should get him to the hospital, and soon. I’ll drive.”
“Okay,” I said, hoping that it wouldn’t be as hard to wake him up as it was before.
I was thankful that Kat had taken charge, because if I was being honest, I had no idea what I was doing. Hell, I’m usually the one in Asher’s position right now, not the other way around. I was able to wake him up and both Kat and I managed to get him to the car. We laid him in the backseat and I sat back with him, letting him lay his head in my lap. The ride was going smoothly for the most part, aside from the awful coughing fits that left him gasping for air. We were almost to the hospital, when I heard him groan and he was grabbing at his stomach. He sprung up from where he was laying.
“Kat, pull over, I think he’s gonna be sick,” I yelled. She managed to get pulled over just in time to open the door. He leaned forward and vomited onto the grass outside of the car, his body shaking from the force. When he thought he was done, we got back into the car, and he fell asleep on the rest of the ride to the hospital.

Asher POV
When I woke up, it took me a few moments to put together where I was. I heard beeping machines around me. I opened my eyes and winced at the pain I felt all over my body. Someone was holding my right hand, and I was confused until I looked over and realized it was Emelia. I felt her squeeze my hand and bring it up to her face and kiss it once she saw that I was awake. I smiled sleepily.
“E-Em? Where am I?” Instantly grabbing my throat, and wincing at the pain I felt in it by speaking.
“Oh, honey. We’re in the hospital. You’re really sick babe. You really scared me. You were running a fever of over 105. You were coughing so hard you couldn’t breathe, so Kat and I brought you here. You threw up on the way here. How do you feel right now, love?”
“Umb, I’m not sure. Eberything hurts. Did I catch your flu or something?” I took a deep breath and turned my head to cough, tears forming in my eyes from the pain.
“Actually, no. It’s much worse than that. You have Legionnaire’s disease, which is basically a severe form of pneumonia. Baby, do you remember when you jumped into the lake and got your leg all tangled up a few days ago?” she asked, caressing my arm.
“Umb, a little, yeah, I think. But I was fine, you gave me CPR and then we went home. Is that what caused this?” I asked.
“Pretty much, yeah. Basically, what happened was when you were underwater, and even when I pulled you out, you had already inhaled some of the lake water, and there were bacteria in the water, and that’s what caused this,” she explained.
“Oh,” I nodded my head. Just then, my chest tightened, and I was sent into a barking coughing fit that just wouldn’t stop. Emelia rubbed my hand trying to soothe me through the fit. I continued coughing and started to panic when I couldn’t catch my breath. I was gasping for breath, desperately trying to get any air into my lungs in between coughs, but it just wouldn’t come. Em noticed me struggling and put an inhaler up to my mouth.
“Honey, I need you to breathe in the best you can, okay? This will open up your airways and help you breathe better.”
I was able to breathe in slightly and at that exact moment she pressed the button down and I felt a puff of air, and immediately felt my airways opening, just like she said they would. The coughing trailed off and she rubbed my arm.
“Good job, baby. One more time, okay? Hold it in your hand like this,” she took my hand and wrapped my index finger on the button, and brought it back up to my mouth. “and then press it down and take a deep breath in. Think you can do it?” she asked. I nodded my head and followed the steps in the order she explained them. I brought the inhaler up to my mouth, pressed down on the tube, and took a deep breath in. I let out a sigh of relief as I felt my airways open even more. I handed her the inhaler and laid my head back, breathing heavily.
“Aw, honey. I’m so sorry. If I had known something like this could happen, I never would’ve had us go to the lake the other day. I feel terrible that this is happening to you,” she sobbed, tears forming in her eyes, threatening to fall down her beautiful face.
“E-Emmy, stop it, love. It’s not your fault. I’m the idiot that jumped into the water, totally not thinking of what might happen. Listen to me and listen to me good. Look at me; this is not your fault, okay? Promise me you won’t blame yourself for this,” I took her hand in mine and squeezed it,
“Okay, promise,” she hesitated, but then nodded her head.
“Good. Thank you for taking care of me, baby. I love you,” I mumbled hoarsely, as my eyes began to droop, and I began to drift off into a restless sleep.
“Anytime, Ash. Anytime,” I barely heard her say. My eyes fluttered open just long enough to see her stand up and step towards the bed, lean forward and kiss my head. I leaned into her touch, as she combed through my hair. I closed my eyes, no longer able to fight the sleep that was trying to pull me under…

Nashville: Laces get tangled.
Like the hills of the city itself, I’ve found myself going through some ups & downs over the past few days. Though I’ve been getting up really early still, I’ve found myself slow to start the actual day. At night too, I’ve been watching some southern-themed movies (Ballad of Buster Scruggs & Steel Magnolias) instead of partying at Honky-Tonks (which kinda scare me... just not into the excessive drinking). We’ve been able to rope some other folks into going to Mexico last minute, which is fun. I’m definitely getting more excited for that leg of the journey now that it’s being laid out. The Jungle & the cenotes are definitely taking centre stage in my daydreams.
I’m craving the countryside. I need to hug a tree. or ride a horse. or pet a dog or something. I went to Centennial park for a picnic (where the Parthenon is) & it still didn’t do quite the trick. I really hope I can go on some hikes in Texas. I did hear there were some really great spots in the greenbelt. If I said Nashville was walkable earlier- I should add it is, but not for the faith of heart or easily tired. The sprawl is real, so are the rolling hills. Especially in the east. It’s very much a car-town. With that- I’ve noticed a lot of people have really dark tints on all their windows- like they all have secrets or something. Theres also a drive-through everything- including Krispy-Kreme & banks.
I’ve found myself a little more lonely here- but maybe I’m just picking up on the general vibration of the city. Like New York, Nashville is definitely a city of broken dreams. My date from the other day (Shibby) said that apparently 100 people move here a day. I suppose they are all chasing something by coming here, and many many many of them end up chewed-up and spit-out. Even the ones that are skirting by sometimes play for empty rooms. It kinda makes me really sad. Everyone seems lonely in that way. But I mean, just as I start to feel realllly sad, a lady scream over the fence of the daycare she was working at and said “I HAVE TO TELL YOU, YOU LOOK SO CUTE I COULD HUG YOU MISS.” So, there were reasons to smile again.
Nashville definitely has a charm to it though. The Murals are beautiful & there is plenty more art to see in the museums (the frist) & little boutiques. Fashion is definitely real here too- and let me tell you I got into some trouble at Buffalo Exchange. After that, I promised myself I wouldn’t buy anything else, but I did wander through a few other stores with my eyes half closed. I mean- the weather has been great too honestly. Today was as hot as a summer day in Nova Scotia. Yet, I’ve seen a few people wearing full blown coats (with fur trim!) while I busy sweating in my overalls. Also, the Magnolia trees here are so huge! I literally had a lump in my throat looking at them (they are my favourite). The Forsythia is in bloom too (my second favourite).
I walked around East Nashville today for a bit of a grounding excersize. That’s where more of the artists tend to live. I had lunch at a cute spot called Sky Blue. (Where I overheard a man say “our species isn’t designed for socialism. It’ll just never work! It’s impossible!” Which I couldn’t help but laugh out loud at.)  There I pondered many of the things that have been coming up for me emotionally lately & really reeling over the strange things/happenstances that the universe has been sending my way. And I’ll say, I can’t get into all of them, cause some of them are far too strange & I haven’t been able to fully process them myself, but I will say one.
So over the past few days I’ve been trying to vaguely figure out if I was going to go to California or not. I had to decide because I needed to pick and airport to fly out of for Mexico. Anyways, my uncle Eric lives in Venice Beach, so I reached out to him to see if I could stay with him & if he had any ideas of things I should get up to. He told me I’d love San Francisco & Santa Cruz. San Francisco, though a place I’ve always wanted to go, is a little more north than I can justify wandering on my way to Mexico, so I decided to look into Santa Cruz.
I don’t know much about the place, to be honest, although I definitely know people that have spent time there. So I decide to watch some cheesy montage-travel vlogs on the ol’ Youtube. I’m watching one, half asleep, when I kinda had to take a double-take. For all of two seconds, who do I see playing a banjo & base drum on the side of the road in random Santa Cruz?? Nick. Nick Shoulders. One of the musicians I met in New Orleans. So I messaged him all “I don’t mean to be weird but.. is this you??” Praying that he understood that the universe was a prankster that likes you psyche you out, and that he’d understand I wasn’t a weird stalker. Of course, he did ask “HOW THE HECK DID YOU FIND THAT?” It’s literally two seconds in this random video on the internet. His name isn’t anywhere near it- like I’m sure the guy that made the video doesn’t even know Nick. Anyways, turns out he lived in Santa Cruz for a year in his van. The world is freaky and small & getting smaller everyday. I both find that a little suffocating & also a little cosy (depending on my mood). Anyways, I might have to take that as a sign and go there- I mean--- **something** is flashing big flashing lights in that direction for some reason. Nick said I’d be able to find some good country/dancey type shows there too.
I still feel the universe being on my side, ushering me along on this trip. I mean the radio has been playing all my favourite songs, like a reminder that home is a feeling that can live inside me. I do feel some homesickness, though.  (Then I think of going back to work, and some of the dramas unfolding in Halifax and I KNOW I’m not ready to go back yet). I’ve been talking to many of *my people* on the phone. And making an effort to meet people here too. You can’t force friendship though. I’m definitely feeling super grateful to have the friends & the life that I do back home- I mean it’s prettttty dope. I’m spoiled by it all. Meeting new people definitely helps remind me of that. They all give me such strange looks- as if I’m making it up. But I just laugh- cause it is stranger than fiction in so many ways, even if it is a bit messy at times.

How Food Scenes Around the World Are Coping Amid Coronavirus added to Google Docs
How Food Scenes Around the World Are Coping Amid Coronavirus

Dispatches on the global state of eating from writers on the ground
As restaurants in the US struggle to survive amid the myriad of tight restrictions put in place in the wake of COVID-19, one thing to remember is this: America is not alone. Around the world, cities and their food systems are being affected by the spread of Coronavirus in a variety of ways, and drastic changes being enacted with varying degrees of efficacy. Eater Travel reached out to our correspondents around the world, asking them to shed light on how their own communities are coping with and adapting to this strange new (but still very, very wide) world.
[Editor’s Note: The below reflects the reality for these cities as of March 20, 2020.]
PARIS, FRANCE “The whole French food chain may become less individual and more corporate”
Currently in Paris you can only leave home for essential foods or other goods, medical care, caring for a child or someone ill or infirm, essential work that cannot be done from home, or small amounts of solitary exercise within your own neighborhood. There is a specific form that you must fill out and carry with you. If you fail to provide the form, or are found to be violating the rules, there will be a fine of 135 euros. Prior to the total confinement, they had already shut down schools and daycares and suggested people work from home, and then with very little notice on Saturday night, announced they were shutting down restaurants, bars, museums, movie theaters, etc. People still flocked to public parks and markets so we had total confinement announced Monday night.
Currently, it’s officially only a 15-day lockdown, but most people expect that it will be extended beyond that. Europe’s borders are closed for the next 30 days. Still, it was reported they issued 4,000 violations today. My own parents think they’re invincible, despite being of the age group most at risk, and continue to golf and go to the dog groomer, etc. If they were to get sick, and with the borders closed, I wouldn’t be able to be with them and then get back in to France. That’s what really concerns me. — Catherine Down
Laurent Van Der Stockt  / Getty Images A Paris restaurant stays open for delivery orders the day after the government-imposed lockdown went into effect on March 17.
The quarantine first registered as a huge practical obstacle to the habits, pleasures, and conveniences of daily life in Paris, restaurants, food shopping and food delivery foremost among them. Now, going on day four, a deeper psychological set of challenges begins to emerge related to isolation, fear, and reflection on what you’d been doing with your life before it was unplugged. The necessity of doing a lot of home cooking was fun for many people at first, but it starts to wear day in and day out, which reminds people of how much they took chefs and the restaurants industry for granted.
Thousands of restaurants in France will not survive this shutdown, because their profit margins were already paper thin and they have the most minimal cash resources. This will also have a terrible effect on organic farmers, cheesemakers, winemakers, etc., who many of them showcased and supported. The whole French food chain may become less individual and more corporate as only big restaurant groups like Alain Ducasse and major industrial food producers survive. — Alexander Lobrano
BUDAPEST “If tourism isn’t somehow jumpstarted before the year end, Budapest restaurants will disappear en masse”
Currently in Budapest there are no mandates yet for people to stay home. But schools have been closed, all public events canceled, so the streets are deserted and everyone is encouraged to stay home. Restaurants and cafes can operate until 3 p.m., after which they must shut down or shift to delivery-only service. The problem is, countless Budapest restaurants depend almost exclusively on tourists, so delivery isn’t really an option to many establishments. The city has cleared of foreign visitors and most locals couldn’t afford to pay upward of €10 for a main dish. This means that we not only need things to return to normal, but also tourism to bounce back, which will take even longer. I worry that by then many establishments won’t be around, including some without which Budapest dining won’t be the same again.
Yesterday, though, the restaurant workers of Hilda, a small downtown restaurant in Budapest, had to put away 30 liters of kegged beer before shutting down for at least a few months. They invited the service team of the restaurant around the corner (which was also closing) to join them for a few rounds, making this sad day a little more bearable for all of them. — Tas Tobias
FLORENCE, ITALY “Everyone considers this year ruined”
Travelers are key to supporting Italy’s slow food movement and artisanal food products (either through restaurants, direct purchasing, or via small food tour companies like mine who promote these producers through guided visits and tastings). With visitors all but gone, these purveyors and the foods they produce are in threat of halting production, which would also translate into a loss of a safeguarded tradition or biodiversity which Italian foodways are widely celebrated for. The only hope is knowing this is a collective struggle felt across the world. — Coral Sisk

There is currently no lockdown at all here in Tokyo. It’s surreal how bars and restaurants are still open for business. Right now people are being encouraged to stagger commuting times; to work from home if possible; and to wash our hands. Nothing is being even talked about yet. But with tourism from abroad dwindling to 10-year lows and far fewer people eating out, many/most restaurants are hurting. Basically we’re all waiting for the situation to explode just as it has elsewhere. — Robbie Swinnerton
HELSINKI, FINLAND “Staying at home and avoiding social contact? Yes! Finally something we are good at. Dark humor, also a Finnish trait.”
Finland is in a national state of emergency. The government decided to close all the museums and theaters so the cultural sector is taking a big hit, and the country closed its borders except for freight and returning Finnish nationals. Restaurants and cafes are still allowed to remain open, but many have decided to shut down, like S-Group, which is closing its network of 82 restaurants in Helsinki. Layoffs are happening left and right, and fear of bankruptcy looms in the air all around.
The mood is worried with a pinch of hope. In Finland, we have this thing called sisu (grit, perseverance, balls), which will serve us well in this time of crisis. Extrovert is not a word I would use to describe us Finns. Staying at home and avoiding social contact? Yes! Finally something we are good at. Dark humor, also a Finnish trait. — Ilkka Sirén
Hindustan Times via Getty Images People out in large numbers buying groceries and vegetables at a market on the eve of Janata Curfew for coronavirus. NEW DELHI, INDIA “I am concerned with the tight-knit way of life in India. If the virus spreads, it will be impossible to contain.”
India hasn’t had a vast breakthrough of the virus yet, but we also have the lowest number of tests per person. The mandate from the Delhi government is to stay at home, but predictably there has been no state provision to take care of people. Few people can take an unpaid leave of absence, so they have to decide between risking getting sick or their jobs. Indian society works in such community-dependent ways that for many it doesn’t even seem like an option.
Many in the middle class don’t know how to cook and depend on their home cooks. There’s been a surge in delivery and cloud kitchens (delivery-only restaurants), but also concerns about hygiene in cloud kitchens. The Delhi government ordered restaurants to close, but less than 5 percent of the city can really afford dine-in restaurants. Urban Indians eat in small informal restaurants and on the street, but street vendors operate with no security or insurance, so there will be challenges for them, especially with concerns that street food will transmit the virus. We haven’t had problems with supermarkets selling out or food scarcity because Indians still eat fresh food, but that very cycle of farm-to-table on an everyday basis may be disrupted. — Sharanya Deepak
LISBON, PORTUGAL “Without restaurants, the country loses all its social traction”
Portugal is a country with many older people (about 30 percent of the population is over 60 years old), and people understand that it is necessary to follow the recommendations of the local government to protect them. The government ordered restaurants to only serve one-third of their capacity, but many chose to close before that. Many local restaurants, even fine-dining restaurants that previously didn’t offer delivery, are trying to focus on delivery or takeaway. There’s a campaign, led by some chefs, asking the government to officially close all restaurants to decrease the risk of contagion and move forward on measures to support a sector that foresees a deep crisis. The movement is called #tomates, which in Portuguese means tomatoes but also “balls,” calling on government officials to have the courage to go forward with order.
In general, the food scene in the country has never been more so prominent, allowing chefs to reinvigorate self-esteem in local, national flavors and ingredients. Chefs and famous winemakers are going online to keep the ball rolling, with Instagram Live panels about wine and interviews about industry happenings on Facebook, but this crisis may put the plane back on the ground for Portuguese gastronomy. It will probably take a lot of time for it to take off again. — Rafael Tonon
MARRAKECH, MOROCCO “The vast majority of Moroccans are cooking at home”
Morocco has had very limited cases of COVID-19, but restrictions have grown gradually, from canceling large gatherings, to shutting down schools and universities, to closing hammams and mosques. Restaurants and shops are completely closed with some restaurants offering takeaway. Farmers may not have the resources to manage distribution with more restrictions in place, while very small bakeries and food stalls earn enough to get by but aren’t making a lot of money. There has been talk from the government that they will release an aid package to help those people and businesses that have been affected, but many people work in the informal economy, so if there is any sort of assistance they may not be recognized or helped. — Amanda Ponzio-Mouttaki
Anadolu Agency via Getty Images Empty streets in Argentina after the country announced its mandatory lockdown on Friday BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA “They cancelled soccer games — which is a huge deal for Argentine citizens considering fútbol is life”
Argentina is probably about two weeks behind Italy and Spain, and one week behind the US in terms of cases, but as of Friday the government announced a mandatory lockdown, requiring people to stay in their homes unless absolutely necessary until March 31. It has all happened so fast. Last weekend, I went out with friends and was mocked for not wanting to give a kiss hello. A week later, here we are. So overall the government has acted quickly, first closing schools, nightclubs, cancelling festivals and concerts, and cancelling soccer games — which is a huge deal for Argentine citizens considering fútbol is life.
Even before coronavirus, the unstable economy and hyperinflation that already exists in Argentina has made it difficult for many restaurants to make ends meet. With this, I’m afraid it’s going to be absolutely shattering to the local restaurant industry. I’ve talked to a lot of chefs over the last few days and many say this is the end for them. But Argentines have gone through many crises before — a dictatorship, economic crisis, and endless political and social unrest — so they are resilient. Living in Argentina can be chaotic because we don’t really know what’s going to happen tomorrow, but it makes the Argentine people incredibly strong and adaptable. As one restaurant owner told me today, “vamos a seguir adelante.” (We are going to keep pushing forward.) — Allie Lazar
NEW ZEALAND “Generally restaurants are open as normal, though diners do seem to be practicing social distancing”
The virus has hit New Zealand a little later than many countries, but already the borders have been locked down and indoor gatherings of over 100 people have been banned, which includes restaurants and bars. Generally restaurants are open as normal, though diners do seem to be practicing social distancing and are eating out less. Some restaurants have started to offer delivery and pick-up services. There have been some reports of panic buying in major supermarkets, and anecdotally, it seems more people are eating at home.
The primary sector here, especially agriculture, relies heavily on export business. The slowing of supply lines transporting food out of the country has meant that many farmers, fishermen and other food producers have lost significant revenue. Crayfish fishers are a prime example: They had to pre-pay for their right to fish, but didn’t fish in the end as their prime export destination, China, had shut down. But the government has already announced an unprecedented NZ$12.1 billion ($7.04 billion US) financial package for the country as a whole, most of which is going into businesses through wage subsidies and tax measures, and includes hospitality. — Janice Leung Hayes
STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN “Most people are even more careful than what’s recommended”
The Swedish government has passed less strict regulations compared to other European and Nordic countries, or at least at a slower rate, which has caused an intense debate about whether the Swedish authorities are weak or smart. As of Friday, there’s no general quarantine, though people are strongly recommended to work from home if possible, not to travel to other countries or even within Sweden, and not to visit Stockholm, where the virus is now spreading most rapidly.
Although restaurants are for the most part open, the number of guests has diminished dramatically, and a great number of restaurants are offering takeaway. Paul Taylor Lanthandel is delivering by car and bicycle, Lux Day By Day have opened a drive-thru, Fotografiska is planning a pop-up bakery, and Restauranglabbet is delivering meals to hard-working personnel at hospitals. Swedish companies in need will be able to take loans from the Bank of Sweden for a total amount of 500 billion SEK (about 50 billion euros), but the question is if this will help. In the restaurant, hotel, and hospitality industry, there’s a feeling of utter despair, but also an unsurpassed feeling of camaraderie among restaurateurs and an impressive flood of innovative ideas and creative initiatives to continue to serve and stay in business. — Per Styregård
SÃO PAULO AND RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL “Seeing Rio de Janeiro’s bars, sidewalks, and beaches empty is the saddest thing”
The country is still in the initial phase of the pandemic. Restaurants in most cities have not closed, except in Rio de Janeiro, where bars and restaurants (and beaches) are set to close for 15 days. However, there are increasing numbers of restaurants responding to the need for social distancing that decided to close by themselves, focusing on delivery instead. Like New York, São Paulo is a city where people eat out very often. Without restaurants in operation, the city loses all its soul. The Brazilian Association of Bars and Restaurants (Abrasel) states that there is already a decrease of up to 70 percent in the turnover of restaurants in the country, and that more than 3 million professionals who work in the industry may lose their jobs in the next 40 days. — Rafael Tonon
Asanka Ratnayake / Getty Images An empty restaurant on one of Melbourne’s signature narrow alleyways on March 18. MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA “Several regions of the country are still suffering from the recent bushfires, so this feels like another brick”
Australia seems to be faring better than many other countries, but the number of COVID-19 cases keeps climbing. Even without a formal lockdown, people are encouraged to practice social distancing, and Friday the prime minister announced a travel ban affecting all non-Australian citizens. Overall, things feel pretty grim. Several regions of the country are still suffering from the recent bushfires, so this feels like another brick.
Melbourne is known for its eating and drinking scene, and it’s unclear what that scene will look like on the other side of this. For now, many restaurants have turned to delivery and takeaway earlier this week. Some offer cooked meals like lasagne and cassoulet, while others sell kits you can cook at home like dry pasta and sauce or curry and uncooked rice. Even fine-dining restaurants like Attica have jumped on board. They have two delivery options; three classic dishes from the restaurant, including the “potato cooked in the earth,” or a lasagne and garlic bread family dinner. Ice cream, wine, spirits and beers can be added to your order. The city has announced a support package for the Queen Victoria Market, which is the state’s most popular tourist attraction, and petitions are circulating right now urging the government to save the hospitality industry and provide more financial support. Melbournians love their restaurants and will do everything they can to support them. — Audrey Bourget
KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA “I trust the healthcare system and government here more than if I were in Tokyo, Bangkok, or America”
Kuala Lumpur is in full lockdown, and no one is allowed in or out of the country. Law enforcement and the military are using patrols and roadblocks to enforce curfews, making sure people only go out in public to purchase essentials or help the elderly or those who cannot help themselves. The two big food delivery services in the region, GrabFood and FoodPanda, are still delivering and encouraging citizens to order food. However, it is known that they both extort restaurants — Grab takes a 20 to 25 percent fee from merchants per order and FoodPanda charges 30 percent — which is a terrible burden for restaurants at the moment, since they are only allowed to serve food by pick-up or delivery. — Mona Nomura
MEXICO CITY, MEXICO “Vendors who sell tacos or fruit or tamales on the street will struggle to put food on the table”
Except for a few neighborhoods like the ritzy Polanco or the tourist-heavy Roma and Condesa, the streets look pretty much the same, albeit perhaps with a slightly lower volume of people. Street stands continue serving tacos, and stores are open for business as usual. The health ministry says they’ve yet to identify community transmission of coronavirus, but experts are worried that the government is moving too slowly. Testing is limited and the Mexican health system is desperately under-resourced. Although the government hasn’t yet mandated any closings, many restaurants are now only offering delivery, and a group of restaurateurs has been coordinating to voluntarily close down this week.
Most of Mexico already lives in a state of precarity, with 60 percent of Mexicans working in the informal economy and around 40 percent living in poverty. A few days without work can mean families don’t have access to food and potable water. Higher-end restaurateurs will likely still be able to feed their families, but their employees may not. Small family businesses could lose everything. Even within the formal economy, the lack of worker protection in Mexico means that workers will take devastating hits. — Madeleine Wattenbarger
