Jonathan telling Will, “you shouldn’t like things because people tell you you’re supposed to”
And Max telling El, “you just try things on, until you find something that feels like you. Not Hopper, not Mike, you.”
Are two scenes that are actually so dear to me!!!

I'm gonna say something that might make elmax tumblr mad at me but:
as much as El and Max are besties in the sense of the nonexclusive title, I can't honestly say I think they're mutual best friends in the sense of literal #1 ranking of emotional closeness.
Max becomes El's best friend within the same hour that they meaningfully interact, surpassing Mike by miles. no contest. but I think Max's best friend is still Lucas.
Max doesn't really share emotionally with El. she's a brand new friend and doesn't really have the, what do I want to say, life experience? to become Max's go-to confidant right away, which is a pretty major pillar of emotionally close friendship. El is so new to normal human relationships and regular life across the board. she would listen and care if Max confided in her, undoubtedly, but someone to whom you'd have to pause and explain and define aspects of what you just said honestly isn't going to be your #1 choice when you're upset and just want to vent and be understood. there's definitely no lack of emotional intelligence or anything like that from El, she's just not the easiest one to communicate with.
El actually COULD understand Max a lot better than Max might expect - and vice versa - but since neither of them really tells the other anything about themselves (at least not onscreen), they don't know just how much they can relate to each other yet.
what little sharing Max has done with El has been mostly in brief unintentional(?) inferences that El didn't engage with ("happy screams" being a troubling insight into her home life, etc). and I see extremely little evidence that El has ever told Max or anyone else much about the lab.
their friendship in s3 is more about being kids and having fun together (which is not something shallow! they both need that so badly) and they have more of a mentor-mentee relationship in some ways. just when their friendship could be getting deep, they get separated which is horribly unfortunate.
I don't mean to paint Max as the giver and El as the taker - they're different things to each other. Max drops everything and immediately offers advice, friendship, and warmth to a girl who's previously been rude to her for no reason, expecting no apology and asking nothing in return. but El spends season 3 body-shielding Max from monsters, is there to hold Max when Billy dies, and moves mountains unasked to find/protect/save Max in 4. she is very much there for Max emotionally, just verbal/written communication isn't her strong suit, and that's especially hard in a long distance friendship where that's the only way you can communicate.
Lucas, on the other hand. he has the distinction of being the first person to make her feel accepted in an unfamiliar town, her first true friend in Hawkins or possibly ever, and I don't think that's overwritten by one shopping spree.
Max really opened up quite soon to Lucas considering her trust issues in season 2 and he made it a very positive experience for her. not much of substance happened between them in 3 but in 4, their relationship seems to have its greatest emotional depth ever despite being broken up, and she voiced her literal deepest darkest secrets and suicidal ideations in front of him. (El heard it too, but Max didn't actually consent to that, although I imagine she would have). Henry used Lucas for a vision, knowing her fears would hurt the worst coming from Lucas's mouth. Lucas is the first person Max mentioned she had already looked for when she went to Dustin's house to talk about what she saw, and that was before their reconciliation.
but now here's something to offend lumax tumblr as well: I don't think Max has been Lucas's best friend at any point so far.
am I forgetting a time he's told her anything about himself? a time she's complimented him? I can't think of a topic he's discussed seriously with her that didn't pertain to Max herself, their relationship, or upside down stuff. his best friend is still within the party - Mike or Will I bet.
I could absolutely see Lucas finding Max daunting to open up to, even before her depression in 4. the way she treats him in 3 doesn't give me the sense there's a whole lot of sharing or validation going on for Lucas. I'm not saying she's a bad girlfriend to him, but I am saying she must make him feel a lot less emotionally cared for than he does her, unless he's extremely aware that they have very different ways of showing love. Max really is nice and definitely would listen and care if he shared seriously (and she has shown him that, just not often or recently), but she definitely has an exterior you have to get past first and I wonder how much he tries to do that.
I assume their friendship/relationship had to have had more depth than what we actually saw onscreen but I feel like Lucas lets his feelings be easily swept under the rug when it comes to Max vs the boys. the "the lady is never wrong" policy he learns from his father may keep the peace, but it isn't healthy for the long term. and this may be a subset of that, but I think Lucas prioritizes Max's hardships above his own (that's gonna be huge for him in 5 and beyond - he got traumatized by what happened to Max too, but he won't be inclined to seek validation of that especially not from her).
while they both absolutely care and empathize, Max and Lucas's backgrounds and struggles aren't ones that each other can personally relate to much. Max doesn't know what it's like to get bullied for being black and Lucas doesn't know what it's like to grow up in a poor, broken, abusive home.
but while their childhoods looked drastically different too, El and Max actually could relate to a lot about each others' pasts. El wouldn't know much about being a child of divorce, but can relate to having an abusive big brother, to wanting to escape, to major trust issues and craving love, to refusing to grow up to be what her abusers want her to be. Max doesn't know what it's like to grow up in a lab, but she can relate to being a little girl unsafe in her own home, to having a hard-learned no snitching policy, to living with a bad man she's supposed to call dad whose abuse causes her sibling to abuse her in turn, to refusing to repeat that cycle.
El and Max have potential to have an incredibly deeply understanding mutual best friendship, and I think they will once they get a chance to spend some time together, process what just happened in 4, and open up to each other about more.
simply aging and maturing will contribute to this as well but I think what Max has learned in 4 will make her more emotionally available with Lucas (disregarding that in reality she'd probably close off more than ever after 4 but it's the last season and we don't have time for that) in fact she was already starting to open up to him more just before she died. I hope they don't rush the relationship aspect of lumax because their friendship is sososo important and deserves its own attention tbh. I want to see some mutual emotional sharing between them where Lucas's trauma isn't sidelined.
also El and Lucas, the combination with I'd say the least in common, absolutely must do some massive bonding over Max. I want the two who were slowest to warm up to each other as kids to be absolutely ride or die. the brot3 potential is there I just need everyone to communicate!
tl;dr: Max is El's best friend but El isn't Max's best friend, and Lucas is Max's best friend but Max isn't Lucas's best friend

You know what's interesting, every season in stranger things, everything happens in the span of like 3-5 days. We start off good, shit hits the fan midway, and then a quick wrap up at the end.
I would like for there to be other normal moments like in other shows where we get to see them have more interactions that doesn't involve being stressed tf out, where we see their families, and how they treat each other. Where we see them go out, and actually hang out without any drama.
Like I want to see El trying different meals, and learning different words, and playing board games with Hopper and the kids, etc. I want to see her and Mike actually go out on dates, want to see her friendship develop more with the boys, make actual conversation that doesn't involve anything to do with whatever danger pops up. I want to see it, not just see her suffer, and be at the brink of an aneurysm with the constant nose bleeds. Let my girl be normal, like I think the only time we see her actually going out, and happy was with Max at their shopping spree, and the snowball dance. Let me see more Damnit.
I want to see Hop working, and counting down the hours until he goes home, his interaction with Flo is so cute. I want to see him talking to Joyce that doesnt include any conversation about the government, and whatever else. I just want them to be happy for fucking once, and chill. Want to see the hopper family going to eat with the Byers family.
I want to see Will draw, and hang out with his family, have more cute moments with Jonathan. I want to see how he copes with everything, how he distracts himself. I want to see his friendship with Lucas and Dustin more, and I want to see him interact with El, and Max more, like actually talk talk. Let my boy play Dungeons and Dragons, fuck. He got hit with something so traumatic, went through it TWICE. If I were him I'd feel like my innocence, my childhood got wiped out, and I would've clung on to whatever made me feel normal, and young before everything as well.
I want to see Nancy, and Mike actually hang out as sibilings, and joke around, bickering like sibilings do. I want to see how she developed her love for journalism, want to see her ambitions go through, want to see her dates with Jonathan, her relationship with Steve afterwards. (I'm a big Jancy and Stancy fan, but my OTP when it comes down to it, between them, is all of them together because it just fits, for me.)
I want to see Steve actually interacting with the kids besides what we see on the show, like the mother hen personality developing more. I want to see how his reputation had dimmed down more outside, how he realized that it wasn't the same after the first season. I want to see Robin's interaction with the other kids, want to see her hang out with them as the cool aunt because let's be honest if Steve is the mom, Robin would be the cool aunt.
I want to see Max and her mom's connection, want to see her life behind the curtains where she actually has good moments, want to see the group hangout watching her skateboard, and fuck, I would love to see Max teach El how to skate. I want to see more of Lucas, and Max. Want to see them go out on dates, want to see all the break ups they had lol.
I'm dying for more sibiling content between Lucas, and Erica. DYING FOR IT. I want to see the small moments, the sweet ones, the protective ones. I want to see him get hit with the realization that his little sister is a hidden nerd, want to see him get shocked when he sees her in action.
I want to see Dustin doing little experiments, want to know more about his family. I want to see him and Suzie interact more, and have cute little moments. Actually I would love to have more scenes including their parents, more of a relationship, and more dialogue.
I want to see Jonathan doing photography again, want to see him go out just for the fuck of it to take pictures with no stress. I want to see more, you know?
Like for example in The Vampire Diaries, sure we have the drama and problems, but we also get to see more outside of it, and see them be friends outside of the danger that lurks, and that is only what is shown on TV.
I want more. That's why I love ST fanfiction, I get to "see" more of it, and it's so cute, however I'd like to actually see it on TV if you know what I mean.

12. The Killing Joke:
-In the wake of Bane’s defeat the Batfamily are able to help Gotham put itself back together.
-Barbara receives an unexpected visitor that could end her career as Batgirl.
- Jason has been busy taking out mobsters and the next target on his list is Black Mask;and he comes face to face with Nightwing and the new Robin.
————-
Directors Notes:
- I wanted to feature a few heroes that aren’t native to Gotham to show that this show could lead to a new extended universe with other spin-offs to come.
-Jason’s return and rise to become the Red Hood is a little different then most versions and I think it will be fun to explore that.
- With Barbara’s Arc for the next season will center around her trauma from the Joker. I do want to explore her being Oracle in the show and what she can do outside of the cape and cowl, unlike some versions this interpretation of Barbara is not fully paralyzed. She at the start of the next season will adopt the moniker of Oracle while also trying to rediscover herself and decide if she can’t be Batgirl after rehab what she can do from beyond her cape and cowl.

if u didnt get this already: elmax 🫶🏼
adore them <3 one of the best duos on st and they only get better as the seasons come. they got off to a rocky start in s2 but im more than willing to call that bad writing and move on. but s3 was their season. i think their dynamic is perfect like yeah they were kinda just pushed together but there’s so many little moments of them growing closer like dancing in els room and flipping through magazines and reading comics. really simple stuff that just builds their initial bond and then later ended up being so so important in saving max from vecna. from max being the person el went to for advice to their lil shopping spree to following nancys lead and trying to solve mysteries together to the whole rest of the season, theyre just perfect. wish they hadn’t spent s4 separated because i think having the other by their side would’ve changed so much for both of them but their reunion in the last episode was so so sweet. max thinking she was imagining el and el threatening to kill vecna again if he hurt max. el literally bringing max back to life!! the power of love trope is theirs idc. they care about each so much and would do anything for the other and im so excited to see them reunite in s5. i just want them to both get their happy endings and be able to hang out or whatever without having to worry about the end of the world <3
(also i need to complain about st fans because there’s no reason for elmax to not be one of the most popular dynamics on the entire show. like they spent the entirety of s3 together, held hands, were willing to die for the other, el brought max back to life from hundreds of miles away because she couldn’t lose her)
Send me a ☕️ and a topic and I’ll talk about how I feel about it

Jaiden I never got past season 3 of Stranger Things so I’m watching it to catch up right?
Tell me why Max and Eleven’s shopping spree at the mall is everything.
because el had told max that mike was lying about his nana being sick due to hopper scaring the absolute shit out of him and max knew that mike was lying. so max takes her to the mall to find something that fits what she likes, not mike or hop and that there's more to life than stupid boys. they were both genuinely having a good time and were being total goofs and pretending to have normal lives for once. and then mike, lucas and will who were also at the mall trying to look for a present mike can get for el as an apology and with max's words of encouragement if mike didn't have a good and reasonable explanation, el would and did dump his ass
really, season 3 el was her exploring her independence with max encouraging her from the sidelines, and I just think that's beautiful

I really want to know what happened to El's fashion in season 4. Season 3 she has that shopping spree with max and has a bunch of cool clothes that suit her then season 4 she's suddenly back to wearing baggy shirts and flannel for no reason??

❤️‍🔥 + Lucas and Max, Lucas and El, El and Max?
Lucas and max: I love them so much!! They’re the cutest and they’re the best honestly! They’re amazing as a couple and has friends and they’re just so adorable! I love how max lets Lucas in and lets Lucas know who she is despite having trust issues and her walls being so high. And I love how Lucas treasures this and recognizes this. I also love how they’re able to be silly and goofy but still have those deep talks. And they just will not give up on one another despite all the shitty things going on in their lives. And they will not let each other go! Just their entire dynamic is so amazing and they’re amazing together! They’re so precious to me.
Lucas and El: precious babies who deserve the world. Okay so their dynamic is one that I love very much. Look I honestly think that their development in season 1 was incredible and wonderful. Lucas going from being distrustful of el because he just wanted to save Will and they found her near where Will’s bike went missing and etc etc etc. A lot of people were mad at this but I also think it was a wonderful choice to do this because I love some complicated mess in a dynamic which I thought was perfect and reasonable of them to do this. And then Lucas decides to warn the others and trust El and then from then on he completely trusts her. He comes to her aid with the fireworks and defeating the meat monster in season 3. El just loves him so much too and she also trusts him a lot. Also like their hugs look absolutely The Best of the best like they’re so top tier honestly.
El and max: incredible and they’re so sweet with one another. I love how there was some complicated feelings at first. While everyone else was rolling their eyes at this and complaining about this: I honestly loved the decision of letting el being jealous of max and being hostile to her. While I love max and my heart did break seeing Max’s handshake be rejected: it also made complete sense with how el would react. So at first El sees max with Mike and I think everybody just gets caught up in the romantic thing that’s set up with Mike and El that they also missed another reason why El would be jealous of max. El after a year of being isolated sees one of her only friends being around another person who she has no idea who she is. Of course El is going to be jealous: she thought she was going to be replaced. But anyway, I fucking loved this decision because it added a lot of depth to their dynamic in the beginning. And then in the end: they become friends! They’re still rocky at first with some of their awkwardness but then they become fast friends. They’re talking about teenage girl things with their romantic relationships and showing each other their interests. And max shows El her comic books and the mall and gives El a shopping spree. El shows off her powers in a non life or death situation and they’re just having fun. And then when things start turning dark they just look out for one another and clean off each other’s wounds. Honestly I have so many feelings about this dynamic because they’re just allowed to be teenage girls with one another - they’re allowed that and they’ve found each other. And it’s so sweet honestly.

THE CONSTANT
Travis Huckabee visits the Barber Shop. He's nervous about asking a girl, presumably Solo Darling, to be his...tag partner.
Lucas Calhoun talks about legendary martial arts fights and says that maybe he'll add his match with Wani to the list.
Match #1: Singles Contest Lucas Calhoun (2 points) vs. Wani (2 points)
Jeremy Leary comes out and swipes Calhoun's scarf and sunglasses, leading to Wani winning off the distraction. (Leary's actually wearing them during the Infinite Gauntlet, meaning that somebody screwed up on editing.)
WINNER: Wani (3 points), Lucas Calhoun is out of the standings
Cornelius Crummels and Sonny DeFarge claim that Moustache Mountain are afraid of them and when they get their title shot, "it will hurt like the dickens". HA!
Match #2: Tag Contest Cornelius Crummels and Sonny DeFarge (3 points) vs. Cajun Crawdad and Rock Lobster
Crustaceans were defacto tecnicos during this, but that didn't save them from Great Expectations.
WINNERS: Crummels and DeFarge (4 points)
UltraMantis Black is no longer the vessel of Nazmaldun and he neither knows nor cares where Kobald stands. He urges him to prepare for annihilation.
Match #3: Singles Contest UltraMantis Black (1 point) vs. Kobald (1 point)
Kobald apparently requested this match. Mantis felled him via the Praying Mantis Bomb.
WINNER: UltraMantis Black (2 points), Kobald is out of the standings
Obariyon is training with Hiptoss Hank when he is approached by Ophidian and Fire Ant. They commiserate and offer to help him get what he wants. Obariyon punches Hank and leaves without giving them an answer.
Princess Kimberlee, wearing a black leather coat, questions what she has to do against one of her very best friends. "What I do in the ring today, trust me when I say, it's not what I want to do, but it's what I have to."
Match #4: Singles Contest Princess Kimberlee (2 points) vs. Solo Darling (1 point)
Kimberlee did not do her usual entrance and showed a rougher side to herself in defeating her opponent.
WINNER: Princess Kimberlee (3 points), Darling is out of the standings
Match #4: Tag Contest Xyberhawx2000 (Razerhawk and Sylverhawk) vs. Team Sea Stars (1 point)
Too bad for Delmi and Ashley, they couldn't keep that point a little longer.
WINNERS: Xyberhawkx2000 (1 point), Team Sea Stars are out of the standings
Match #6: MAIN EVENT Grand Championship defense Hallowicked (champion) vs. Icarus (challenger)
Mike Quackenbush, on commentary, talked about the Night Shift, putting forth that these two competitors have been warring for a very loooooong time. Hallowicked retained.
WINNER: Hallowicked, Icarus is out of the standings
Post-show, Team Sea Stars asked Mantis to mentor them, obviously not knowing anything about how people who associate with Mantis usually don't come to happy ends. Mantis turned them down, saying that he walks in darkness too great for them to follow.
HAPPILY EVER AFTER
Lucas Calhoun regales a friend with tales of the Infinite Gauntlet when Jeremy Leary pulls up. An unspoken challenge is made. It's a drag race!
Match #1: Singles Contest Jeremy Leary (1 point) vs. Heidi Lovelace
Big ol' handful of tights gets Leary the victory.
WINNER: Jeremy Leary (2 points)
The drag race begins, with Calhoun's friend giving the signal.
Match #2: Singles Contest DUSTIN (1 point) vs. UltraMantis Black (2 point)
Cosmic Doom seals the deal and gives Mantis his third point.
WINNER: UltraMantis Black (3 points), DUSTIN is out of the standings
Calhoun's car is leaking fluid. Leary has sabotaged him! The cheating fink!
Race Jaxon's become a full on jerk (and I couldn't be happier to see it). He makes fun of Calhoun, talks himself up, and debuts "That's so Race" as a new catchphrase.
Match #3: "The Young, The Handsome" Race Jaxon (1 point) vs. Lucas Calhoun
Man, Calhoun's not had a good go of it during this batch.
WINNER: Race Jaxon (2 points)
To add to Calhoun's humiliation, Jeremy Leary has swiped Calhoun's ring gear! UNACCEPTABLE! He's going after Calhoun's hair! ALSO UNACCEPTABLE! (Someone call Mr. Lemongrab!)
After the drag race, Calhoun wants to deck Leary for the obvious sabotaged, but is silently urged not to do so by his friend...and turns over the keys to his car to Leary.
Match #4: Tag Contest Solo Darling and Travis Huckabee vs. Mr. Azerbaijan and the Proletariat Boar of Moldova
Bloc Party reunion! Guess these two didn't get to go home? Anyways, didn't end well for them.
WINNERS: Solo Darling and Travis Huckabee (1 point)
Match #5: Tag Contest The Closers (2 points) vs. Xyberhawx2000 (Razerhawk and Sylverhawk) (1 point)
And it's back to losing for the Hawx!
WINNERS: The Closers (3 points), Xyberhawx2000 are out of the standings
Match #6: Singles Contest Missile Assault Man (1 point) vs. Juan Francisco de Coronado (2 points)
JFDC's going to have to wait a little longer for another title shot...
WINNER: Missile Assault Man (2 points), Juan Francisco de Coronado is out of the standings
Post-show, Kimberlee is apparently being blackmailed by The Whisper, who instructs her to do something else for him.

The ‘Stranger Things’ Season 3 trailer is action-packed
youtube
LOS GATOS, Calif. — There’s a lot going on in the new season of “Stranger Things.”
Season 3 of the popular Netflix series will begin soon, and the latest trailer just dropped.
The three-minute-long, action-packed clip shows that Eleven, Mike, Will, Dustin, Lucas, Max and the rest of the gang are growing up and taking on more responsibility to protect their world from the Upside Down monsters.
“No matter what happens, we have to stop him together,” Mike says in the trailer.
But are they successful?
According to Netflix, which is headquartered in Los Gatos, California, “It’s 1985 in Hawkins, Indiana, and summer’s heating up.”
“School’s out, there’s a brand new mall in town, and the Hawkins crew are on the cusp of adulthood. Romance blossoms and complicates the group’s dynamic, and they’ll have to figure out how to grow up without growing apart,” a blurb from the streaming giant says. “Meanwhile, danger looms. When the town’s threatened by enemies old and new, Eleven and her friends are reminded that evil never ends; it evolves. Now they’ll have to band together to survive, and remember that friendship is always stronger than fear.”
Viewers have been anxiously awaiting the return of the award-winning series and Netflix has kept the flames stoked for months.
The first trailer, which was released back in March, was filled with all types of 1980s pop culture references.
Since then, the hype has only continued to grow. Burger Kings released an upside-down Whopper, which is just a regular Whopper served bun side down. It’s meant to represent The Upside-Down in the show.
David Harbour, who plays Jim Hopper in the show, came to Kansas City to promote the show. He also went on a shopping spree for Children’s Mercy Hospital.
“Stranger Things” starts streaming July 4.

Money story: Our financial 180
This guest post from Joel is part of the “money stories” feature at Get Rich Slowly. Some stories contain general advice; others are examples of how a GRS reader achieved financial success — or failure. These stories feature folks from all stages of financial maturity. Today, Joel shares how he and his wife made a “financial 180”, going from extreme spenders to extreme savers.
Hi, I’m Joel!
Last November, I quit my job as a software engineer to retire early at the ripe old age of thirty-three. I had reached financial independence — that point where you’ve saved enough money that you never need a job again.
Life’s been pretty great since then. I work on fun stuff — like writing and music — on my own schedule. I take care of the household chores and cook dinner for my wife (who still works…for now). I have plenty of time left in my days to spend goofing off with family and friends.
You might think that if I managed to retire at such a young age that must mean that I had this money thing figured out all along. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, just a few years ago, I was stuck in a job I hated with no way out. I wanted to escape.
This is the story of how my wife and I made a financial 180, going from zeroes to heroes in just a few short years.
An Expensive Past
In 2007, I graduated college with a degree in computer engineering, took a job with a fortune 500 company, and bought a brand new house. For the first time in my life, I felt like an adult. With a big paycheck coming in every two weeks, I could have anything I wanted. As luck would have it, I wanted a lot — and I had expensive tastes!
I decided my first purchase would be a $3500 high-def television. I added a PlayStation 3 and assorted accessories to the shopping cart, and raced back to my new house to get everything set up.
That night, as I sat on the floor in that empty house, watching The Simpsons, my girlfriend (now wife) convinced me that something was fundamentally wrong.
“Joel,” she said.
I glanced over to her. She looked beautiful in the glow of the giant television. “Yes my darling?” I said.
“We have no furniture,” she said. She was right. But we had an awesome TV!
In all of the excitement of my spending spree, I somehow forgot furniture. No problem. I reached for the credit card, and $10,000 later, our house was filled with furniture: fancy leather sofas, king-sized beds, the works. It felt great! For the previous five years, I’d been a broke college kid. Now, I was a respectable grown-up.
As the years passed, my spending habit worsened. By 2012, we were spending six figures a year on… Stuff.
Two brand-new cars at $25,000 a pop? That’s normal, right?
A $40,000 wedding and a fancy Bahamian honeymoon? Sure, that was expensive but we could “afford” it.
$13,000 in restaurant spending during a single year? We liked to think of ourselves as food connoisseurs.
Why shouldn’t I treat myself? I was putting a full 6% into my 401(k) every year to get my employer match. That was more than most Americans. I was being smart! So, I continued my adventures in spending.
A Crash Course in Life
Before I knew it, our life was full: food and water delivery services, monthly massages at the spa, fancy dry cleaning bills, season tickets to various entertainment venues, expensive martial arts hobbies. You name it, we had it.
But as our life — and bank statements — filled up, we weren’t getting any happier. It was actually the opposite. We were more stressed than ever before! We just couldn’t figure out the problem.
In 2013, I decided changing employers would shake things up and give me a much-needed morale boost, so I jumped to another big firm in the area. The pay bump and new faces helped a bit, but within a few months, I was unhappy once more. What was wrong? I had spent thousands of dollars on toys the previous year. Why weren’t Amazon purchases fixing my problem?
What I needed was a way out of the life we had built for ourselves.
You’d think a high tech job would be interesting, but over the years I realized it’s all the same: Write yet another version of an already existing widget for a program that’s behind schedule and over budget. Changing jobs didn’t help. New code, new cubicle, same prison sentence. The fluorescent lights taunted me as I stared at the blue skies outside. I couldn’t go out and enjoy it; I was always too far behind on my tasks. I tried coming to work earlier, staying later, working through lunch.
Nothing helped.
I was trapped.
It was around this time that a friend pointed me to a blog called Mr. Money Mustache. He thought it might help give me some perspective on money, so I glanced over a few articles. “What an interesting website,” I remember thinking at the time, unaware that my life was about to change in a very big way.
Soon after, my wife was in a terrible car crash.
She was visiting her mom in south Florida when a sheriff’s officer ran a red light with no sirens and T-boned her in an intersection. My wife’s Honda was totaled, but thankfully she walked away with only minor injuries. Soon after, the insurance company sent us a check for $10,000 — the depreciated value of the $25,000 car she purchased new just a few years earlier.
Our Financial 180
That night, as we sat on the fancy leather sofa in our filled-to-the-brim-with-stuff house, my wife once again convinced me that something was fundamentally wrong.
“Joel,” she said.
“Yes my darling?” I said.
“We need to stop spending our money,” she said. As is often the case, she was right, and I knew it.
That night, we both binge-read the Mr. Money Mustache website. I became consumed by this strange concept of financial independence, the idea that somebody could save enough money to retire in ten years (or less).
I worked out the math for myself. I checked the numbers twice, looking for a mistake. But it was real. Financial independence really was a way to escape the daily grind, a way to add control and meaning back into our lives. We took the $10,000 insurance check and put it into a Vanguard index fund instead of buying a second car.
It was a new financial beginning for us.
As we began slashing our expenses, we realized that most of the luxuries we purchased to make ourselves happy were superficial. The new house and cars, the fancy furniture, it was all a sham. None of it actually brought us any long-term happiness. After a few months, the shininess fades, and you’re back to square one. It’s called lifestyle inflation.
Worse, the things we sacrificed for those luxuries — control of our own schedules, free time for friends and family — really would contribute to our happiness, if only we had time for them! Once we figured this out, we worked hard to increase our saving rate as much as possible.
We turned money management into a game. Every month, we’d look for one improvement we could make to our budget. Before long, we got pretty good at saving money! The results were dramatic.
This graph shows how we slashed our spending:
And this graph shows the simultaneous rise in our savings:
By 2015 we’d cut our expenses by two thirds, allowing us to max out our 401(k)s and pay down our mortgage. In the years since, we’ve saved hundreds of thousands of dollars. And just after my 33rd birthday, less than five years after our financial 180, I was able to quit my job — for good!
A Team Effort
I know this story sounds like sunshine and lollipops, but turning things around was not easy. And the turnaround didn’t happen overnight. It was gradual. We made a ton of mistakes along the way:
We bought a new home worth less than half its mortgage.
We had six-figure annual expenses and battled lifestyle inflation.
We had sizable wedding, travel, and new car expenses.
We had no investment knowledge whatsoever, so we made poor decisions.
The list goes on and on and on.
Despite the mistakes, my wife and I were determined to work together as a team to turn our finances around and to learn as much as possible.
We devoured financial independence blogs like Mad Fientist, 1500 Days, and Frugalwoods. We read books such as Your Money or Your Life and The Millionaire Next Door.
We worked together on our impulse spending by creating shopping lists before stepping foot into our favorite stores (Best Buy for me, Target for the wife). If it wasn’t on our list, we didn’t buy it. To reduce our restaurant spending, We learned to cook each other’s favorite meals instead of going out to eat every night. The key here is that we each put in the work — together. We communicated our goals. We were both invested in turning our financial situation around, and so we were fully committed to making it work. At the end of each month, we’d sit down together to scrutinize our credit card statements and cut all nonessential expenses.
Gradually, our hard work started paying off. All of the individual improvements we made added up to something enormous.
We tracked our net worth as it grew. This helped form a mission statement for my blog: to document our journey, and help as many people as possible save up their own FU money, replace fear with flexibility, and avoid all the mistakes we’ve made in the past!
Why did we pursue financial independence? To spend more time with family and less time at unfulfilling jobs. To pursue creative endeavors with no pressure to turn a profit. To live our lives the way we want, on our own schedules, without the need to worry about money ever again.
Want to get started on your own financial 180? The math is easy. Create a gap between what you earn and what you spend. Build a wealth snowball. If you can save half your income, your working career will only be around a decade long! I know, I know. It sounds crazy — but it’s true.
Maybe it’s time to make a financial 180 in your life. Ten years from now, you’ll be glad you did!
Reminder: This is a story from one of your fellow readers. Please be nice. After twenty years of blogging, I have a thick skin, but it can be scary to put your story out in public for the first time. Remember that this guest author isn’t a professional writer, and is just learning about money like you are. Unduly nasty comments on reader stories will be removed or edited.

pezberry + dress :D
OOH YES!
Okay firstly: based probably in late season 3 or 4. Santana would be so judgy on Rachel's dress choices since they both have completely different styles
They go to the mall and Santana grabs like 90% of the dresses in one of the shop's and makes Rachel try them on
They're all either too flashy, too slutty, or too uncomfortable
Rachel would model each of the outfits, and Santana would be once again, very judgemental. And then grabs rachel like 10-15 more dresses
Santana is literally considering burning all of Rachel's clothes and giving her a new style. Kind of like Max and Chloe from life is strange, where Rachel is Max, is also trying on Santana clothes as well, to see if they fit when they can't go shopping
Rachel is basically Santana's real life barbie doll when it comes to fashion advice and shopping sprees
Kurt would also come along on one of the mutiple shopping sprees and he would also be judgemental as hell too. Because, its Kurt...
But then, there's always the dress that's 'the one' cause it always happens
Rachel would be all giddy and happy that she found a dress that not only she, but Santana (and Kurt) had also liked.
One time during their shopping sprees, Santana almost got arrested because she was fighting with a girl over one of the dresses she wanted Rachel to try on
