what i’d love to know about the whole like anyone who dares besmirch the classics ought to be ground into dust and forced to repent for their sins type posters is like, do you never encounter people in your life who are just not especially interested in reading, or in reading the kinds of books that you consider intellectually valuable. and do you look down on them the way you look down on people on the internet who talk about idk fanfiction and YA novels and aren’t especially interested in combing through the collected works of shakespeare, or what?

they found this barrel floating in the ocean that was marked as an offering to a sea god and luffy and zoro yell “god, i’m drinking your booze!” “didn’t you beat the crap out of god?” and i just imagine franky pausing for a second before it hits him like “yeah hey what the hell are you talking about and why did everyone else go ‘lol oh yeah’”🧍

Happy Friday the 13th!
Yes, I made up an excuse to post about a whole bunch of Spooky Season-appropriate books at once. Sue me.  Middle Grade Gallowgate by K.R. Alexander Sebastian Wight is cursed. This is Luke's favorite thing to say about me, to remind me. I'm a survivor. It's the finality of the word that bothers me, its assuming implication. Survivors should move on. Should wear white wedding dresses and carry peonies down the aisle and overcome, rather than dwell in a past that can't be altered. The word dismisses something I cannot, will not, dismiss.

I have such a hard time talking to people about my interests because it’s literally as if god just pushed “randomize” in the character traits menu.
I love profound deep shit like classical literature of Franz Kafka, HP. Lovecraft, Edgar Allen Poe, Albert Camus and Oscar Wilde and then I’ll talk to you about the weird smut fanfiction I read yesterday.
And then you’ll see me trying to show you a best of of the cutest moments between my favorite romcom gays mixed with my recommendations for the best horror movies I’ve seen this week.
I am quite literally the Barbie Oppenheimer girlfriend and it is quite the experience.

Book Review #66 of 2023--
Tumblr media
What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher. Rating: 4 stars.
Read from May 28th to 29th.
T. Kingfisher has done it again. Yet another work that I’ve read and enjoyed so much from her. This is a retelling of a Poe classic: The Fall of the House of Usher. In the original, we follow a visitor to the House of Usher as they discover its inhabitants are ill with weird symptoms and a vague madness circling them both. In this retelling, we follow Alex Easton as they get a letter from a childhood friend who needs them to come to the house at once. Upon arrival, Easton is horrified at the state of decay as well as the state of their childhood friends. Madeline is paler than a ghost while madness shines in Roderick’s eyes. What is bringing down the House of Usher?
My main complaint for the original was that it was too short and provided few answers. Which was apparently also T. Kingfisher’s problem since she gave us more and gave us a sense of closure. I was happy with the answer that we got despite how absolutely horrifying and creepy it was. That was something the author did so well in this one. The whole time you’re in a constant state of horror while also trying to think through this mysterious illness. We also got to truly see and understand just how dilapidated the house is throughout the novel. Whole rooms and wings are shut off from the rest of the house because it would be too expensive to heat while wallpaper peels off the walls and mold and water take up residence. We also got more characters in this than we got in the original story. And I think they’re lovely, just like all of T. Kingfisher’s side characters. I need more of a little old lady in love with mycology in everything I read.
I do think there was a little too much fungi in here for me. I know in the original Poe was obsessed with it so it obviously had to be transferred into this story. And a longer story means more time with the fungi. But boy was it a lot. Ha. I don’t know. It was gross and horrifying and creepy and everything you could want out of it. I just felt like we didn’t get enough. Do I know it sounds ridiculous that a retelling of a 29 page story that is 130 pages longer than the original wasn’t enough? Yes. Am I still who I am? Yes, absolutely. If I’m enjoying something, it almost always feels like it should be longer. But that’s more of a me problem than a book problem.

I’ve finished watching tugs. and I’ll just say.... it’s a wonderful show. it’s genuinely mind boggling that it’s incredibly underrated with how it’s characters and themes are portrayed absolutely well.
where do I even start? it’s considered a sister show to ttte, and they share a lot of similar features (talking vehicles with faces, them getting into situations each episode, both shows using models and on-set technologies to bring each character to life, michael bay explosions) but tugs and ttte have incredibly distinct themes.
just like ttte all the characters are incredibly distinct, both personality-wise and design-wise. but I will stop mentioning ttte at this point. I want to talk about the things that made tugs leave an impact inside my cranium.
I love the fact that the characters are much more mature (???) and realistic. like you have ten cents, the guy who’s cheeky but knows when to stop and prioritizes hard work and getting the job done over getting into silly childish situations. there’s hercules, the classy smooth talker who can get everyone together during tense times and can get serious in handling awry situations. there are characters who are stuck-up and kind of snobbish, but it’s not over exaggerated. like top hat, he doesn’t like getting dirty and complains over dirty smells AND panics whenever he’s about to be in danger, but still does his greatest to be of use and help.
the antagonists aren’t just there to show the audience the forced lessons in black-white morality. the characters aren’t there to teach the audience “that’s why you listen to people older than you! or else you’ll get into silly situations!” lessons.
there’s the z-stacks like zorran who’s the main antagonist (though he is definitely far from being the biggest antagonist or straight up a villain) but there are several instances where he’s efficient and can command his coworkers well. he’s reliable, he’s sharp-tongued, he’s smart because he knows how to keep his shit together. he also knows when to put his rivalry aside for the greater good and work together in order to get rid of a bigger threat, like in the munitions episode (he even tells ten cents to stay away from the burning barges and leave bluenose be). and there’s bluenose who initially could be mistaken as a distant ally, but his foolishness and bossiness and inability to keep his mouth shut are what kickstarted the events of the munitions episode. he literally stacked an entire trail of dominoes that lead up to two characters dying, multiple barges and tanks exploding, and several locations in shambles, and knocked said domino trail down by himself. none of these two are malicious, they are driven by their own sets of morals and thought processes and what they believe is the most important.
remember that part when the first oil tank is set on fire and when everyone is panicking, these are what zorran and bluenose have to say on the situation:
bluenose: “I’m in charge, stay where you are!” zorran: “no way, I know what’s on that barge - get clear, the whole thing’s gonna blow!” bluenose: “stay where you are!”
you know straight up these two factions - the star fleet and z-stacks - don’t exactly hate or despise each other. the star fleet aren’t sagely, perfect heroes, and the z-stacks aren’t evil, bad, or whatever negative adjective there is in the english dictionary. they’re just business rivals (more like their captains). zorran, zak, zebedee, and etc aren’t cunning because they’re part of the z-stacks. they’re cunning and just happens to be part of the z-stacks.
I’ve sensed the elements of death and mortality throughout the entire season as well. there’s burke and blaire with their whole thing with OJ, the entire ghost episode, how sea rogue is forced to carry out dirty work for the sake of his uncle, how big mickey and krakatoa just straight up fucking died during the munitions episode? good lord.
it’s quite a shame that due to the company’s bankruptcy, the second and following seasons cannot happen.... I’ve heard that they have scripts that are enough for 7 or 8 seasons! oh well, I’m still happy with what’s given to me.
overall, I couldn’t recommend this show enough. it’s just. man I don’t know how to describe it. and yeah there are some things that aged poorly but it’s still quite an enjoyable show.
also if you’re wondering, my favorite characters are top hat, hercules, and zorran.

dezmon and plenkket technically have the highest honor i could bestow upon a character and that is their fandragon selves being in my main town rather than in my fandragon tab. ...by virtue of being made before i decided to have a fandragon tab

Re, your post about sanji v absalom, i hope you dont mind a little rant, because I have a lot of feelings about this. Basically, post-timeskip sanji has become a huge frustration for me because it felt like his perviness has been dialed up by 1000 at the expense of not only the rest of his personality for the most part, but also in instances like this where someone he allegedly cares about has been violated and yet instead of really helping, he just makes the situation more unpalatable???? The fight with absalom became all about sanji and how pissed he was about absalom trying to marry Nami and that he has the invisible devil fruit, not about Nami and everything the asshole has been putting nami through. When we first met Sanji, he was still a perv, but it wasnt his like whole personality the way its become these days. It's just really disappointing, because I loved him when we first meet him and the perv stuff was annoying but i could at least roll my eyes and move on because its a stupid trope but at least it wasnt as bad as some manga Ive read, but now it's so much WORSE than most of the manga I've read and I dont like him much at all because of all this shit. He gets a little better in later arcs post-thriller bark, but it's unlikely I'll ever like him like I did before, and that makes me so sad.
one of my friends said he gets worse and and i'm just. beyond so disappointed about that. him being a little pervy was a quick gag in the beginning that was easy to roll your eyes at, if you addressed it all, because you knew there was never any intent behind it. he might faun over nami and robin, but again, they know there's no ill intent behind it. but hearing the perviness becomes his personaility is so disheartening. i want a sanji who cares about his friends and crew, not one who's overtly lecherous.
the fight with absalom really turned into being about him and his feelings when it never should have been that at all. his only feelings should have been anger -- anger over nami and what had been to her and what she'd been through.
frankly i'm really surprised and disappointed no one actually expressed any anger over that? after hearing usopp tell them nami had been spied on and attacked in the bath. (i get it's an action story with a few emotional beats, but you can talk about and show murder but not have someone go "that wasn't okay" about what absalom did?) that also gets me about usopp -- i mean yeah, i might be thrown for a second if i open the door and my friend is completely nude, but that's immediately going to be overshadowed by the fact that she's yelling for help and clearly being restrained. usopp, you can ignore the fact her boobs are out. do something to help her. (having her bathe before they were supposed to leave is also weird writing because they 100% could have been separated some other way.)
the same thing is played off for laughs later on -- sanji bursts in flame and oh man, he's so silly! gonna go save nami!
and when he first showed up in the church and was pissed i was like yes!! yes!! be angry for her and what she was made to endure. be pissed that your friend was spied on, assaulted, drugged, and stripped and forced into this situation. and instead of being pissed on her behalf it feels mostly like it's on his own. when he said absalom stole his dream my heart dropped into my stomach because was it something like dumb to marry nami (which absalom was forcing her into against her will?) or something creepier like he saw her naked when he didn't?
(not to ignore the scene in alabasta where she flashed them, but she was more in control in that situation and was able to make a choice. she was in control of her body! [sidebar, but cobra peeking over the wall was also fuckin weird because his daughter was there. she was also clearly less comfortable with what was happening too.])
nami is his crew mate and more so than anything his friend. she's his friend.
i hope nami's angry after all of this. i hope she stays angry. i hope the crew, her friends, are angry too over her treatment, over what happened to her. at least i will be.

Do you have a favorite Andor blorbo?
I would say Mon Mothma, but then i think i might miss something about her not watching all those animated series? Anyway the way she is surrounded by enemies and still tries to do something good, no matter how even the closest people sneer at her...✨
I was already excited about aged characters actively participating in the Rebellion - not just being in background crowd or a parental figure saying few wise words to another chosen boy or teenage girl in love triangle... It was Maarva who started the uprise on Ferrix, Cassian didn't even participate in it!
And then Luthen said what he had sacrificed and did his escape thing... I didn't expect to feel anything at all about Stellan's character as usual.
Tumblr media
Look Andor even made such barfos as Dedra and Syril interesting to watch. I wonder if he'll spark anything human in her or will she sink him further in darkness and waste him for the Empire.
