Today on the spring equinox our new album 'Never The Same Way Twice' makes it's way into the World. The album is a collection of previously unreleased recordings to mark twenty years since the release of our self-titled debut album. Two decades is a long time and the over-riding emotion I have for this album is one of gratitude, to those who have supported our music and everyone that has taken time to listen. In particular I am so very grateful to all the amazing musicians who have given their time and talents to make The Memory Band what is is, I am forever in their debt. There is not the space to thank everyone who has been part of the band but the people who perform on this album are as follows: John Andrews, Liam Bailey, Liza Bec, Alex Bonney, Helene Bradley, Olie Brice, Jonny Bridgwood, Findlay Brown, Dee Byrne, Hannah Caughlin, Olivia Chaney, Howard Cottle, Al Doyle, Sam Genders, Adem Ilhan, Lisa Knapp, Jennymay Logan, Simon Lord, Paul McGee, Rhys Morgan, Tom Page, Polly Paulusma, Jeremy Radway, Lucy Railton, Jess Roberts, Quinta, Sarah Scutt, Rob Spriggs, Serafina Steer, Alexis Taylor, Fred Thomas, Jon Thorne and Nancy Wallace. You are all marvellous March hares.

“Sentenced To Die, Protests Strongly,” Toronto Star. May 16, 1932. Page 2.

W. G. Seabrooke Must Die for Ottawa Crime
---
Ottawa, May 16. - William G. Seabrooke, 22-year-old Ottawa youth, found guilty of the murder of Paul Emile Lavigne, gasoline station attendant, in a hold-up on Dec. 12 last, was on Saturday sentenced to death by Mr. Justice Logie. Verdict and sentence will be appealed.
Accused dramatically interrupted as his lordship thanked the jurors for their work by leaping to his feet and saying: ‘If I had done this, I would have been the first to admit it. But I did not.’
Later, as the death sentence was followed by the invocation, “May God have mercy on your soul,’ Seabrooke cried out: ‘And He will!’
The last execution to be carried out in the capital city was as far back as 1868, when Patrick Whelan paid the extreme penalty for the assassination of Hon. Thomas d’Arcy McGee, Canadian statesman, who was fatally shot on Sparks St., here.

Keep reading for my unsolicited opinion on what I read this month.
1-2. American Royals and Majesty by Katharine McGee
There is no justification for American Royals to be a book, let alone a 464 page book, let alone a 464 page book with a 384 page sequel.
American Royals features a love triangle — though it was less of a love triangle and more of a love tangle — as well as an arranged marriage, a bodyguard romance, and two secret/forbidden romances (because one wasn’t enough).
All the characters are straight, cis, and white (with the exception of Nina Gonzalez, our token non-white character, the daughter of our token same-sex couple).
All the characters are also privileged and entitled, spoilt and selfish, and toxic and manipulative, but still manage to victimize themselves constantly (because it’s so difficult being a rich, white, straight, cis member of the modern aristocracy).
As for the alternate history — I use the term “alternate history” loosely — McGee took our timeline (with a democracy), and pretended that the same events had occurred, but with a monarchy. Anyone who possesses common sense (or performs cursory research on the matter) knows that a timeline must be alternated for it to be an alternate history. Hence why it’s called an alternate history. But apparently McGee, the publishers, the editors, and everyone else who reviewed it did not possess this common sense (or perform any cursory research on the matter).
The only sections of the timeline that were alternated had to do with slavery, segregation, discrimination, and racism. It did not address any of it, but alternated the timeline so that it didn’t exist. In effect, it erased the slavery, segregation, discrimination, and racism that African Americans, Native Americans, and people of color experienced throughout American history as well as the discrimination and racism African Americans, Native Americans, and people of color still experience today. It also suggested that slavery, segregation, discrimination, and racism would not have existed if there had been a monarchy instead of a democracy, which is… problematic.
To summarize it, I’ll quote Nina “I’m-not-like-other-girls” Gonzalez: “Despite the whirl of action that seemed to affect the characters, nothing much had actually happened.”
3. Instructions for Dancing by Nicola Yoon
Instructions for Dancing is a signature of Nicola Yoon. It was romantic, earnest, and sincere with a meaningful message. Although it wasn’t a message that was original to the novel, it was heartfelt in its delivery.
4. Blackout by Dhonielle Clayton, Tiffany D. Jackson, Nic Stone, Angie Thomas, Ashley Woodfolk, and Nicola Yoon
Blackout is a compilation of black romances written by a collaboration of black authors. Angie Thomas and Nicola Yoon are both auto-read authors of mine, so once I saw they had collaborated on Blackout, I had to read it. They did not disappoint.
5-6. The Extraordinaries and Flash Fire by T.J. Klune
The Extraordinaries and Flash Fire features an eclectic cast of characters (Nick, a gay fanfiction writer with ADHD, Seth, Nick’s bisexual childhood best friend, Gibby, Nick’s lesbian best friend, and Jazz, Gibby’s girlfriend), a quick-paced plot (with superhuman elements), and hilarious dialogue and internal monologue. I had read (and also adored) The House in the Cerulean Sea, but it was The Extraordinaries (and Flash Fire) that cemented T.J. Klune as an auto-read author of mine. Under the Whispering Door is one of my most anticipated releases for the second half of 2021. And the third and final book in the Extraordinaries is one of my most anticipated releases for 2022.
7-10. The Raven Boys, The Dream Thieves, Blue Lily, Lily Blue, and The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater
The Raven Cycle features an eclectic cast of characters (Blue, the daughter of a psychic, Gansey, a privileged student at Aglionby Academy, Ronan, Gansey’s best friend, Adam, a scholarship student at Aglionby Academy, and Noah), a quest (with fantastical, magical, and supernatural elements), and a series of prophecies. I loved the development of the plot, but I felt that the execution of the plot was slow-paced, though it picked up as the series progressed.
11. Opal by Maggie Stiefvater
Opal is a short story told from the perspective of one of Ronan Lynch’s creations, Opal, who follows life at “the Barns”, specifically the lives of Ronan Lynch and Adam Parrish. I adored Opal’s perspective, especially Opal’s perspective on Ronan and Adam. I adore Ronan and Adam.
12-13. Call Down the Hawk and Mister Impossible by Maggie Stiefvater
Call Down the Hawk and Mister Impossible features a cast of characters both old and new (Ronan Lynch, Declan Lynch, and Mathew Lynch from The Raven Cycle, Jordan Henessy, and Carmen Farooq-Lane), a quest (with fantastical, magical, and supernatural elements), and a series of dreams. I loved both the development and the execution of the plot. The third and final book in The Dreamer Trilogy is one of my most anticipated releases for 2022.
14-16. The Foxhole Court, The Raven King, and The King’s Men by Nora Sakavic
Although I rated the All for the Game trilogy 1/5 stars, my review of it was quite forgiving. I kept it, but added comments in italics, since I am no longer as forgiving.
All for the Game features an eclectic cast of characters, a fictional sport, and a crime organization. (And the deplorable portrayal of mental illness, physical and sexual assault and abuse, trauma, and suicide.) Although I liked the cast of characters (Ha! I despise the characters — I hope they are brutally murdered by the mafia… or worse, I hope they trip over their own racquets in the midst of a game of Exy), I disliked the fictional sport. (I couldn’t care less about an actual sport, let alone a fictional sport, let alone a fictional sport that’s a violent version of lacrosse.) (There are entire scenes — entire chapters — of them playing Exy in which the sequence of events are impossible to follow. It’s obvious that Sakavic is as lost as the reader is, but such is the cost of coming up with your own sport.) I also disliked the mob/mafia type of crime organization. (Give me an old-fashioned neighborhood gang instead.) (The mafia was incredibly invested in Exy. Why they were invested in a collegiate sport is beyond me, but they were more interested in it than I was as the reader.) I also severely disliked the sadistic torture scenes that were written in detail that was both graphic and gratuitous. (And with sexual undertones.) All for the Game cemented that sports fiction/romance and mob/mafia fiction/romance are not my type of read. (And that poorly-written books with poorly-executed plots are not my type of read either.)

Alice: Madness Returns is a 3rd-person action-adventure platform game from Spicy Horse, published in 2011 by Electronic Arts. Madness Returns is a sequel to American McGee's Alice from 2000. The game follows Alice Liddell, a girl suffering from unusual trauma, caused by a family tragedy. Alice lives in an orphanage for mentally traumatized orphans, and is under supervision of Dr. Angus Bumby. To get rid of the trauma, she once again falls into Wonderland, where a new evil force has corrupted it.
Alice believes that she is responsible for a fire that consumed her home and family, so she escapes into a twisted version of Wonderland.
A couple of years earlier, Alice was held at Rutledge Asylum for treatment, and she was actually able to conquer her doubts and fears. She was then released from the ward, and placed in the orphanage instead. This is where Madness Returns takes place. The year is 1875, the place is Victorian London. Alice still suffers from hallucinations and visions of Wonderland, but they are kept in check by doctor Angus.
One day, as Alice is walking outside of the orphanage, one of her hallucinations, a white cat, takes her to Wonderland once again. She arrives in a beautiful and magical forest with strange plants and flowers in vivid colors. Everything seems peaceful, but as moves through the landscape, the beauty becomes corrupted and twisted. Alice must fight several weird beings and she encounters all kinds of environments, both beautiful and scary.

By some horrible coincidence, a group of college roommates somehow have found their ‘other selves’, each one with a distinct personality and name.
Chaos ensues.
Notes: I’m actually doing something quite a bit different with this series, as the full first and second installment are on AO3 already. I started writing this back in June, when I was very lonely at three am during my job and I honestly never expected it to grow into over 70k in words with a sequel and multiple stand alone one shots. I’ve definitely come a long way from where chapter one is currently at, so I’ll be posting three times a week until I run out of the story. Anyway, enjoy!
also, just ask if you wanna be on the tag list.

The Microdosio Tour: Two Nights with Papadosio & Friends!
Now that music venues are coming alive again with the sound of music after a long hiatus, Papadosio was back in Atlanta for a blistering, two (2) night stand (June 25th – 26th) at The Roxy. Athens, Ohio natives Papadosio made some wonderful memories while on The Microdosio Tour with some help from Atlanta natives Dollarsine (Night 1) and Space Kadet (Night 2) as the opening support. You may recall Papadosio gracing my column a few years back while they performed another two nightstands at Atlanta’s Terminal West. Check out the review from 2019’s The Road to Resonance Night 2 Papadosio featuring Space Kadet.
Atlanta’s very own David Dollar a.k.a. Dollarsine started off the weekend on The Microdosio Tour for the faithful that came to dance all night long to the smooth, groovy sounds of the night. The crowd was ready for Dollarsine to come on stage and perform his magic. Once he came out on stage, the early crowd that had gathered let him know by showing some major love his way. You could tell that many in the crowd were familiar with Dollarsine and expressed joy seeing him perform at the Roxy. Dollarsine had complete command of the crowd for the duration of his set, and he enjoyed every minute on stage that night. He ended his set featuring a new track coming off his brand-new EP, which according to Dollarsine is dropping very soon. Stay tuned to his website: www.dollarsine.com for more details! Want to check out Dollarsine? Follow this to Dollasine’s Official Soundcloud today!
Papadosio has been a favorite electronic/jam band of mine for some time now. My first time checking them out was at Bonnaroo (2016) during their Thursday set at That Tent. Their unique sound had me enthralled from the beginning. Formed back in 2006 by various band members from Ohio University, Papadosio consists of Anthony Thogmartin (vocals/production/guitar), Mike Healy (drums), Rob McConnell (bass), and Billy & Sam Brouse (two handed keyboards). Papadosio have never let me down over the years. Every time I witness their jam, I am left amazed at how well these guys are synched together and how they just let the music do all the talking. Tonight, was no exception as the band jammed through a specially crafted set list for the fans in attendance during Night 1.
Night 1 Set list
· We Are Water XL
· Utopiate >
· Shiitake >
· Utopiate
· Cue ][
· Fuse >
· Chaga
· Polygons XL >
· Cordyceps
· Euclidean Lights
· Encore: Unparalyzer
Local Atlanta darlings Space Kadet (and longtime pals of Papadosio) had the honor of opening for Papadosio’s epic second night at The Roxy. The band, Space Kadet, consists of Alex Etheridge (bass/synth/production), Rohan Prakash (drums/samples), and Thomas Garret (guitar). These guys are so much fun to watch play live. It was great seeing them play a larger venue this time around. More space for their sound to carry. Not only do they take the audience on a sonic journey through their set. You can see the band having so much fun performing for their fans (new and old alike). You can follow Space Kadet on JamBase to see if they are playing near you anytime soon. Space Kadet actually first graced my column here at Concerthopper when they opened for The Floozies / So Down / Space Kadet: Live at Variety Playhouse, so give that article a read (or re-read). Want to check out Space Kadet’s tunes? No worries. Follow this link to Space Kadet’s Official Soundcloud today!
When Papadosio came on stage and kicked off the second night of their weekender with “Cloud Found”, the crowd went absolutely nuts! And I thought the first night was incredible. Well, Papadosio stepped it up and made me question that exact thought. As they went through some great tracks like “Paradigm Shift”, “Lions Mane”, and “Madre” the crowd was entranced at every single note Papadosio played for them. Closing it out with their track “Holy Heck” was a great way to cap off an extraordinary weekend of music from Papadosio, Space Kadet, & Dollarsine!
Night 2 Set list
· Cloud Found
· 2AM >
· Fanfare for the Rain People >
· Paradigm Shift ][
· Lions Mane
· Dream Estate
· Madre ][
· Improbability Blotter
· Fire Rite XL
· Encore: Holy Heck
Bummed you missed this weekend with Papadosio? Do not worry you can still check them out this year on tour. Head over to Papadosio’s tour page and see if they are coming near you in 2021. Personally, I would suggest checking out the Resonance Music and Arts Festival that will feature three (3) sets from Papadosio during the weekend of September 16-18, 2021. Many other great acts on that lineup such as Umphrey’s McGee (2x sets), Lotus, Tipper (2x sets), Lettuce, and The Floozies to name a few.

Meet Cute
If you like love stories - fantasy, sci-fi, realistic fiction - about any gender, race, or situation, you’ll enjoy this book. It’ll instill unrealistic romantic fantasies in your mind about falling in love at an airport, on a subway, in a library ;), or a print shop, which can be disappointing, but most of all it’ll warm your heart and open your mind. I highly recommend checking out this book and reading some (or one, or all) stories. They’re all wonderfully diverse and will lead you through a range of human emotions.
Spoilers ahead ~
Short stories are my absolute FAVORITE, and I get a little happy, fluttery feeling every time I pick up a book like this one. There’s nothing more affirming than reading short fiction and thinking, “I could write something like this!” and nothing more pleasing for a hopeless romantic than reading about people falling in love in fourteen different ways.
Siege Etiquette by Katie Cotugno - Queen bee Hailey finds herself stuck in the bathroom with Wolf, a loner who spends half the year homeschooled at his family farm, when a high school house party is discovered by the police. I can’t remember the last time I read something in second person, which makes it pretty interesting. I don’t find the main character especially likable, though she is mysterious. Overall, I didn’t think the first story was all too romantic or compelling, though the situation certainly invites the reader to imagine.
Print Shop by Nina LaCour - Evie’s job at the print shop is not quite everything she’d hoped it would be, but it does lead her to a cute, nerdy girl despite a Twitter argument over customer service. I love everything about this story, from the characterization to the setting. The casual representation of Alex and Terry being husbands without anyone objecting or judging is beautiful. “Print Shop” makes me want to work in a small, old-fashioned print shop with a cranky owner and his doting husband. We must all bow down to Nina LaCour for giving us so much amazing content.
Hourglass by Ibi Zoboi - Cherish deals with end-of-high-school stress when her best friend ditches her to go with a boy to the prom and she faces modern problems in a digital world. Cherish is such a great character, and I love the issues this story confronts. It’s great for diversity in terms of body size and race. I also appreciate that the romantic element isn’t the basis or main theme of the story but hints at a very very cute and healthy relationship by the end.
Click by Katherine McGee - Alexa’s first experience with the world’s top dating technology is going terribly, considering that she lost her phone and with it her project to create a virtual reality avatar of her sister. Raden notices she’s different from other girls he’s dated, and maybe that isn’t such a bad thing. I liked the science fiction element of this story, and even though it was sad, it was heartwarming by the end.
The Intern by Sara Shepard - Clara’s first task at her father’s record label is an unusual one - she must take musician Phineas on an outing through New York to see a psychic. First of all, Phineas reminds me of Hozier in the loveliest way possible, so whenever he talks I picture Hozier and read the words in his voice. The two characters’ interactions are so pure and distinctly human that I just melt. This one made my heart HURT and squeeze with excitement.
Somewhere That’s Green by Meredith Russo - Nia Robinson already has to deal with adults and students alike telling her she doesn’t have the right to use the girls’ bathroom at school, and on top of all that, one of such protestors is playing Audrey in the very same production of Little Shop. But maybe Lexie isn’t exactly like her parents, and maybe Nia is a lot different than Lexie had expected. This story is so cute!!! I’m so grateful for Lexie’s character arc and the way she was portrayed as a naive yet brave person instead of an antagonist. The romantic tension that builds up and the way it’s resolved... just. Aaah.
The Way We Love Here by Dhonielle Clayton - Every person from the Isle of Meridien is born with red strings coiled around their ring finger to signify love. Once only one band is left, they will meet their soulmate. After saving an unfamiliar yet undeniably handsome boy from drowning, Vio ensnares with him, pushing them through glimpses of their future together. The imagery in this story is so beautiful. It’s all quite simple and peaceful, but it’s warm and happy and very well-written.
Oomph by Emery Lord - Cassidy is stuck at the airport with a one-hour delay likely to increase, and Johanna escapes a drunk guy’s conversation by sitting next to her. I know I’ve said this about just about every story in this book, but it’s just so cute. I found myself identifying with Cass and falling in love with Johanna alongside her. It was so satisfying and didn’t tear out my heart like the usual “Oh wait, I didn’t get her number!” moment.
The Dictionary of You and Me by Jennifer L. Armentrout - Moss has been trying to convince a mysterious library patron to return a dictionary for months now, and it seems futile until the hot guy from her history class shows up at the library. It shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone that I have an affinity for love stories that take place in libraries, considering that I work at a library. From the quirky characters to the new words I’ve learned, this story is so beautifully crafted and well executed.
The Unlikely Likelihood of Falling in Love by Jocelyn Davies - What is the likelihood of falling in love with a boy you see out of the subway window, only to pass by and disappear? What are the odds you’ll find him again? Romance and math seem like the most mutually exclusive things in the world, but poets, songwriters, and authors have proven they are not. I love stories that throw you wholeheartedly in support of the main character, and this one had me rooting for Sam in all her math-genius glory.
259 Million Miles by Kass Morgan - Philip’s only chance of escaping his mortifying online presence is being chosen for a one-way mission to Mars, but he meets another contestant during the final round of challenges and it all goes awry. Kass Morgan’s characterization of Philip and his social anxiety was so accurate it hurt to read. The amazing things authors can do with characters and settings and dialogue in so few pages never ceases to astound me, especially in “259 Million Miles!” I had to stop the tears so I didn’t cry in the middle of the library.
Something Real by Julie Murphy - June and Martha are contestants on a dating show with a chance to win a date with Dylan, a pop star. This is another awesome story with plus-size representation and a same-sex couple! I love how Julie Murphy wrote this story - it’s rich with imagery but also very readable and humorous. This is at least the third time I’ve read this story since every time I get my hands on the book I race to show it to my friends. Also, the emphasis on TV being a lot more fake and a lot less magical than it looks is great.
Say Everything by Huntley Fitzpatrick - Emma Greene’s family hasn’t recovered from her family’s financial crisis and neither has her social life, but when a local rich athlete at the prep school a town over asks her on a date, she must confront the damage. This is another story written in second person, of which I’m not a fan. I did enjoy the descriptions and characterization in the story, though, and I found I could identify with the main character.
The Department of Dead Love by Nicola Yoon - After Thomas’ seemingly perfect relationship ends and he’s still not over it, he turns to the Department of Dead Love to determine its cause of death and perhaps start over, where he encounters empathetic Gabrielle Lee. I found it interesting to imagine a parallel universe or future in which we are able to autopsy and diagnose our failed relationships and how that would affect my choices and my life. I’d like to end this review with a quote from this last story that I thought was very striking:
“For whatever reason, there are people you want to tell your weird, secret thoughts... you want them to love you because of those things, not in spite of them. ‘Some people make you want to be known.’”
Happy reading! ~Raia

"HONORARY COLONEL OF IRISH RECEIVES COMMISSION," Toronto Globe. April 19, 1933. Page 9.
----
A brief but very impressive ceremony held last night in the Spadina Avenue Armories saw recognition in a formal way of very outstanding services rendered the Toronto Irish Regiment, when the Honorary Colonel of the unit, Colonel Harry McGee, was presented with his commission, suitably framed. Colonel McGee was associated with the first Honorary Colonel of the regiment, the late Sir John Eaton, in the equipping and clothing of the men who went overseas to bring fame and honor to the unit, a great many decorations being won by all ranks. Ever since the formation of the regiment Colonel McGee has evinced strong interest in it, which was renewed in stronger bonds when he accepted the post of Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel four years ago. At the first of this year his Majesty the King was pleased to confer upon Colonel McGee the appointment of Honorary Colonel of the regiment, and his commission was presented to him, last night at the regular Tuesday parade in the presence of a considerable number of friends, among them being Lieut.-Col. A. Coulter McLean: Thomas H. Bell, M.P.P.; David Spence, M.P.; Captain Porter, Captain Switzer, and Lieut.-Col. W. W. Soden-Irwin. The illustration above shows Colonel McGee (centre) receiving the framed commission from Licut.-Col. A. Coulter McLean (right), with Lieut.-Col. W. W. Soden-Irwin at the left, flanked by other officers and N.S.O.'s of the unit.

Can Salem’s Lot and Firestarter Reignite Stephen King at the Box Office?
https://ift.tt/2S0a65g
It was almost exactly four years ago when It: Chapter One (as it came to be called), the first of two movies based on Stephen King’s classic 1986 novel, opened in theaters to a record-shattering $124 million in its first weekend. Adjusted for inflation, the film went on to become the highest grossing horror movie (and King adaptation) of all time, earning $701 million worldwide. Not even the vampires of ‘Salem’s Lot multiplied at that rate!
It’s explosive and unprecedented opening coincided (and perhaps helped drive) a new wave of Stephen King adaptations, both as movies and TV productions, and new generations of filmmakers and hungry-for-content streaming services eagerly tapped into the author’s vast collection of works.
As of last year, some 25 projects based on King novels, novellas, or short stories were said to be in development, but of all those, only three—all limited television series—have made it to their respective streaming platforms. Still, there are two movies entering production as of right now: Firestarter, which began filming earlier this year, and ‘Salem’s Lot, which goes in front of the cameras this month.
Both stories have been adapted before—twice in the case of ‘Salem’s Lot—but never satisfyingly, and both a long time ago. The novels themselves were King’s second and sixth books to be published and are part of the classic first 10 or so works that turned King into a phenomenon (that initial run arguably stretches from Carrie to Pet Sematary, more or less).
Nevertheless, following the release of It, several more King-based movies came out—and all underperformed.
It: Chapter Two, which arrived two years after its predecessor in 2019, earned $473 million worldwide. Which is a handsome sum, to be sure; but it’s also nearly 35 percent below Chapter One. Meanwhile a heavily promoted remake of Pet Sematary, issued in April 2019, stalled at a mere $113 million worldwide (even if its tight $21 million budget made it profitable enough). And Doctor Sleep, a clever and powerful adaptation from director Mike Flanagan of King’s The Shining sequel, was a complete bust, topping off at just $72 million globally.
While it’s harder to judge and quantify how several King-based TV or streaming projects did, it’s reasonable to conclude that two recent limited series, CBS All Access’s The Stand and Apple TV+’s Lisey’s Story, came and went without making much of a dent in the pop culture conversation (although HBO’s limited series based on The Outsider caused a brief stir).
So what happened? Was It’s iconic Pennywise the Dancing Clown ingrained enough in the public consciousness to warrant the first movie’s massive success, without that necessarily signaling a wholesale embrace of more Stephen King material on the big screen?
‘Salem’s Lot and Firestarter may be able to answer that question for certain. The former in particular is considered one of King’s all-time masterpieces and was often cited for years by the author himself as his favorite of his early novels.
Set in the small, rural Maine town of Jerusalem’s Lot, the story follows a writer named Ben Mears who comes back to the Lot where he spent several years as a child seeking inspiration for a new book. He gets much more than he bargained for when it turns out that another new resident in town is actually an ancient vampire—and is turning the entire community into his own flock of the undead.
What was so stunning about ‘Salem’s Lot at the time of its publication (the hardcover arrived in 1975) was King’s deft combination of the vampire mythology with the inner workings of a small yet instantly recognizable 20th century American hamlet.
The Lot, its inhabitants, and all their affairs, secrets, scandals, and everyday workings were so vividly rendered that the intrusion of a monster as stereotypical in its way as a vampire (America at the time was still transfixed by demonic possession in the wake of The Exorcist) was realistic and terrifying.
The vampires that eventually overrun the Lot and turn it into a literal village of the dead—led by the magisterial yet barely seen Kurt Barlow—were truly frightening as well; no sparkly Twilight types or tormented hunks a la Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire (published a couple of years later) here.

Stephen King: 10 Best Horror Novels
By John Saavedra
They were monsters that stank of the grave yet still possessed enough of their old memories and a vicious cunning to make them formidable enemies for the book’s quickly dwindling band of heroes. King drew inspiration from Bram Stoker’s literary version of Dracula, but actually took the concept to the apocalyptic endpoint that the Victorian author only hinted at.
‘Salem’s Lot was adapted twice, in 1979 and 2004, both times as two-part, four-hour (with commercials) limited series for CBS and TNT, respectively. The first was directed by Tobe Hooper (The Texas Chain Saw Massacre) and starred David Soul as Ben Mears, with James Mason also top-billed as Barlow’s human assistant/familiar, Straker.
While suffering from the constraints of TV at the time, both in terms of budget and what could be shown, the 1979 version works more often than not. It does combine or eliminate a number of characters, and most controversially changed Barlow from a Christopher Lee-like nobleman to a non-speaking creature resembling Nosferatu’s Count Orlok, shifting the primary villainy to Mason’s Straker.
But Mason himself is quite sinister and very good, as is Soul as the brooding Mears and several other actors. There are also several scenes involving the vampires themselves that are pretty eerie for the time when considering, again, this was a CBS-TV prime time miniseries.
The 2004 version, directed by Mikael Salomon, starred Rob Lowe as Mears, Donald Sutherland as Straker, and Rutger Hauer as a more faithful version of Barlow. The miniseries also restored other characters that had been cut or minimized in the 1979 version and stuck to the same basic narrative while creating a different framing story from either King’s book or the earlier adaptation.
But Lowe isn’t nearly as effective as Soul in the pivotal role of Mears, and both the cast and show overall—despite the names mentioned above and others like James Cromwell—come off as bland. There are moments from the book that are welcome and a few gripping sequences, but this version of the story never ratchets up the intensity to a satisfying degree.
The new feature film, which is now filming in Boston (‘Salem’s Lot at last films in New England, where it’s set, as opposed to California and Australia), has been penned and is being directed by Gary Dauberman, who co-wrote both part of It and has written four of the movies in producer James Wan’s Conjuring-verse (Dauberman also directed the underrated Annabelle Comes Home).
A tremendous King fan, Dauberman told us back in 2019 that his goal was to make vampires on the big screen truly horrific again.
“We haven’t seen that in a really long time and they should be terrifying, and the novel’s terrifying, and it’s fucking great to work on,” Dauberman said. “I can’t wait to bring it to the big screen, we’ve seen it on the smaller screen and it’s going to be awesome on the big screen.”
Whether Dauberman can make King’s 400-plus page novel and all its subplots work as a feature film, even a lengthy one, instead of a more roomy limited series will be an interesting trick to pull off. Some cast members, including Lewis Pullman as Ben Mears, Makenzie Leigh as his love interest Susan Norton, Bill Camp as local teacher Matt Burke, and Alfre Woodard as Dr. Cody, have been announced already, but don’t provide any sense of where the film is headed yet.
As for Firestarter, the book was published in 1981 and warmly received at the time. King was at his early peak of commercial success and readers were eager to devour his next offering. Even so, that tale has probably not retained the same resonance as ‘Salem’s Lot. As the story of a little girl who can start fires with her mind (the result of drug experiments on her parents by a secret government agency), the book was King’s first overt science fiction novel and reads more as a tech chase thriller than his previous supernatural work.
The 1984 film version directed by Mark L. Lester (Class of 1984) featured an extremely faithful screenplay; with a smaller group of characters and its more streamlined, structured narrative, Firestarter is perhaps more adaptable and linear than a vast tapestry of people and incidents like ‘Salem’s Lot. But the film was directed in such workmanlike fashion that the script never comes to life.
The cast is problematic too. Following her breakout in E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, Drew Barrymore seemed like a no-brainer for the title role of little Charlie McGee. But Barrymore—apparently conscious that she was an “actor”—is overwrought and histrionic, becoming more annoying than sympathetic. David Keith is okay as her father, while Art Carney and Louise Fletcher probably come off best as an elderly couple who help the McGees at a critical moment.
The most egregious casting is that of George C. Scott as John Rainbird, the shamanic Native American assassin who forms an unsettling bond with Charlie once she and her dad are recaptured by the agency known only as the Shop. Aside from the fact that casting Scott as a Native American is ridiculous enough, the relationship just doesn’t work on screen—Rainbird’s fascination with Charlie as an avatar of his own death in the novel just comes off as creepily bordering on child predation in the movie.
It will be interesting to see how producer Jason Blum, director Keith Thomas (The Vigil), and screenwriter Scott Teems (Halloween Kills) handle that relationship in their upcoming remake, but at least they’ve actually hired a First Nation actor, Michael Greyeyes, as Rainbird. Zac Efron is also a solid choice for Andy McGee while Ryan Kiera Armstrong (The Tomorrow War) has won the role of Charlie.
Of the two adaptations, Firestarter is clearly the easier to translate to the screen. Both titles carry instant name recognition for King fans and the general public, but it’s ‘Salem’s Lot that has perhaps the greater pull overall. Plus we’ve seen lots of kids, teens, and tweens with psychic powers on screen over the past few years; when was the last time you saw a truly scary vampire movie?
Neither film has a release date yet; Firestarter is in post-production while filming on ‘Salem’s Lot is just beginning. In the meantime, King himself, showing no signs of slowing down as he approaches his 74th birthday, continues to churn out books and stories which studios and production companies will no doubt continue to snap up. All they need now are audiences to turn up and prove that, unlike Pennywise in It, it won’t take another 27 years for King’s name to mean box office gold again.

BOOK DESCRIPTION:
A revolution in cooking Sous vide is the culinary innovation that has everyone in the food world talking. In this revolutionary new cookbook, Thomas Keller, America's most respected chef, explains why this foolproof technique, which involves cooking at precise temperatures below simmering, yields results that other culinary methods cannot. For the first time, one can achieve short ribs that are meltingly tender even when cooked medium rare. Fish, which has a small window of doneness, is easier to finesse, and shellfish stays succulent no matter how long it's been on the stove. Fruit and vegetables benefit, too, retaining color and flavor while undergoing remarkable transformations in texture. The secret to sous vide is in discovering the precise amount of heat required to achieve the most sublime results. Through years of trial and error, Keller and his chefs de cuisine have blazed the trail to perfection—and they show the way in this collection of never-before-published recipes from his landmark restaurants—The French Laundry in Napa Valley and per se in New York. With an introduction by the eminent food-science writer Harold McGee, and artful photography by Deborah Jones, who photographed Keller's best-selling The French Laundry Cookbook, this book will be a must for every culinary professional and anyone who wants to up the ante and experience food at the highest level.
