The Microdosio Tour: Two Nights with Papadosio & Friends!
Now that music venues are coming alive again with the sound of music after a long hiatus, Papadosio was back in Atlanta for a blistering, two (2) night stand (June 25th – 26th) at The Roxy. Athens, Ohio natives Papadosio made some wonderful memories while on The Microdosio Tour with some help from Atlanta natives Dollarsine (Night 1) and Space Kadet (Night 2) as the opening support. You may recall Papadosio gracing my column a few years back while they performed another two nightstands at Atlanta’s Terminal West. Check out the review from 2019’s The Road to Resonance Night 2 Papadosio featuring Space Kadet.
Atlanta’s very own David Dollar a.k.a. Dollarsine started off the weekend on The Microdosio Tour for the faithful that came to dance all night long to the smooth, groovy sounds of the night. The crowd was ready for Dollarsine to come on stage and perform his magic. Once he came out on stage, the early crowd that had gathered let him know by showing some major love his way. You could tell that many in the crowd were familiar with Dollarsine and expressed joy seeing him perform at the Roxy. Dollarsine had complete command of the crowd for the duration of his set, and he enjoyed every minute on stage that night. He ended his set featuring a new track coming off his brand-new EP, which according to Dollarsine is dropping very soon. Stay tuned to his website: www.dollarsine.com for more details! Want to check out Dollarsine? Follow this to Dollasine’s Official Soundcloud today!
Papadosio has been a favorite electronic/jam band of mine for some time now. My first time checking them out was at Bonnaroo (2016) during their Thursday set at That Tent. Their unique sound had me enthralled from the beginning. Formed back in 2006 by various band members from Ohio University, Papadosio consists of Anthony Thogmartin (vocals/production/guitar), Mike Healy (drums), Rob McConnell (bass), and Billy & Sam Brouse (two handed keyboards). Papadosio have never let me down over the years. Every time I witness their jam, I am left amazed at how well these guys are synched together and how they just let the music do all the talking. Tonight, was no exception as the band jammed through a specially crafted set list for the fans in attendance during Night 1.
Night 1 Set list

Local Atlanta darlings Space Kadet (and longtime pals of Papadosio) had the honor of opening for Papadosio’s epic second night at The Roxy. The band, Space Kadet, consists of Alex Etheridge (bass/synth/production), Rohan Prakash (drums/samples), and Thomas Garret (guitar). These guys are so much fun to watch play live. It was great seeing them play a larger venue this time around. More space for their sound to carry. Not only do they take the audience on a sonic journey through their set. You can see the band having so much fun performing for their fans (new and old alike). You can follow Space Kadet on JamBase to see if they are playing near you anytime soon. Space Kadet actually first graced my column here at Concerthopper when they opened for The Floozies / So Down / Space Kadet: Live at Variety Playhouse, so give that article a read (or re-read). Want to check out Space Kadet’s tunes? No worries. Follow this link to Space Kadet’s Official Soundcloud today!
When Papadosio came on stage and kicked off the second night of their weekender with “Cloud Found”, the crowd went absolutely nuts! And I thought the first night was incredible. Well, Papadosio stepped it up and made me question that exact thought. As they went through some great tracks like “Paradigm Shift”, “Lions Mane”, and “Madre” the crowd was entranced at every single note Papadosio played for them. Closing it out with their track “Holy Heck” was a great way to cap off an extraordinary weekend of music from Papadosio, Space Kadet, & Dollarsine!

Bummed you missed this weekend with Papadosio? Do not worry you can still check them out this year on tour. Head over to Papadosio’s tour page and see if they are coming near you in 2021. Personally, I would suggest checking out the Resonance Music and Arts Festival that will feature three (3) sets from Papadosio during the weekend of September 16-18, 2021. Many other great acts on that lineup such as Umphrey’s McGee (2x sets), Lotus, Tipper (2x sets), Lettuce, and The Floozies to name a few.

It's the thought that counts... Loki thought it was a delivery of play-in bags. He's mad we won't let him climb inside. We still need 100$ to make our bills goal and the tablet I'd like to replace my intuos4 with is 66$ right now. Reprimand For Battery Conviction
An Illinois Hearing Board accepted a stipulated reprimand of an attorney convicted of misdemeanor battery as set forth in the stipulation
On the evening of June 24, 2016, and again on the evening of June 25, 2016, at the request of his spouse, Respondent changed the light bulbs at their home in northwest suburban Inverness. On June 25, 2016, Respondent and his spouse were discussing household responsibilities, including his spouse's request that Respondent change additional light bulbs. By 9:30 that evening, Respondent had not finished changing the light bulbs.
On the evening of Sunday, June 26, 2016, Respondent sat down in a chair after dinner to watch television. Respondent and his spouse continued their discussion about the light bulbs. The discussion continued about other topics as Respondent was on a stepladder finishing changing the burned-out light bulbs in the kitchen.
Respondent recalls that his spouse was yelling at him as he came down from the stepladder. Respondent then put his hand up and placed it on his spouse's neck. Respondent removed his hand from his spouse's neck when she told him she could not breathe. That same night, Respondent's spouse contacted the Palatine Police Department to file a police report against Respondent based on his conduct.
On June 26, 2016, officers arrived at Respondent's home, and spoke with both Respondent and his spouse. Respondent's spouse told the officers that she had not lost consciousness, and informed them she was declining medical treatment because she did not feel she was injured. The officers noted in their report that they had observed visible red marks on Respondent's spouse's neck. The officers then arrested Respondent.
On June 27, 2016, the Cook County State's Attorney charged Respondent with Domestic Battery in violation of 720 ILCS 5/12-3.2(a)(2). The matter was captioned The People of the State of Illinois v. Brian J. Wanca, and docketed in the Domestic Violence Division of the Circuit Court of Cook County as case number 16 DV 30448.
On October 3, 2016, Respondent pled guilty to Battery, a Class A misdemeanor. On that date, Judge Samuel J. Betar entered an order sentencing Respondent to twelve months of court supervision, requiring him to complete a drug and alcohol evaluation and adhere to any corresponding treatment recommendations, and completion of a domestic violence program.
On September 28, 2017, having complied with the conditions imposed by Judge Betar, Respondent's supervision was terminated as "satisfactory" and no judgment of conviction was entered against Respondent as a result of his conduct.
In mitigation, Respondent has not been disciplined since his admission in 1980, and he has been cooperative in the disciplinary process. Respondent has expressed remorse for his conduct and promptly complied with all conditions related to his supervision. He has also engaged in pro bono work throughout his legal career, and, in various class action matters he has handled, has distributed in excess of one million dollars in cy pres donations (distributions of class funds to non-profit organizations that advance the public interest)

President Maduro declares ‘war on migrants’ returning to Venezuela during pandemic

President Maduro declares ‘war on migrants’ returning to Venezuela during pandemic
Migrants are detained in insalubre quarantine shelters
Venezuelan migrant in Colombia waiting for an humanitarian bus to go back home. Photo: Joshua Collins, used with permission.
When the pandemic began in March 2020, Deisi had been living in Ecuador for four months. With $100 US dollars in her pocket, she arrived with her husband and her two children, and quickly found a job selling juice on the street. Her husband became a plumber, and both salaries allowed them to rent a room in a poor sector in the south of Quito. But three weeks after the first COVID-19 case was detected in Ecuador, the country became the epicenter of the pandemic in Latin America. Migrant communities were hit particularly hard as lockdown measures cut their ability to support themselves and their families back home. In a phone interview with Global Voices, Deisi said:
Nos sacaron de la habitación después de quitarnos el internet y el agua. Nos quedamos en la calle y tuvimos que pedir dinero para buscar comida, y con el miedo del virus que estaba por todos lados. Solo queremos ir a casa, porque cualquier cosa que nos pase nuestros hijos se quedan solos. En Venezuela tenemos familia que los puede cuidar. Pero ahora no podemos ir a nuestro propio país.
We were evicted out of our room and my whole family was left in the street. We had to roam the streets looking for food and money, afraid of a virus that was crawling everywhere. We just want to go home. If anything happens to us, our children will be left alone. In Venezuela they would be with family willing to take care of them. But we can’t. We’re not allowed inside our own country.
The Venezuelan refugee crisis, which started in 2016, has become the largest in modern history, only surpassed by Syria. Venezuelans fled what has been called a complex humanitarian emergency to other countries in the region, most of them battling their own deep social, economic and political crises. This has left Venezuelan migrants across the continent particularly vulnerable in the face of the pandemic as they depend on informal jobs, lack savings, lack social networks, and are exposed to xenophobia. They are also unable or unwilling to access public health systems because of their immigration status.  With more than 221,000 Venezuelan refugees and migrants remaining in Ecuador, 400,000 in Chile, 1,4 million in Colombia, 800,000 in Perú and more than 213,000 in Brazil, Deisi is not the only Venezuelan migrant who is unable to go back home during the pandemic. In Venezuela, President Nicolas Maduro’s government officially declared war against migrants, blaming them for the spread of the virus in Venezuela. During one of his mandatory national broadcasts on July 17th, he said:
Por ahi se nos han metido, por las trochas, venezolanos irresponsables y inescrupulosos; connacionales que llegan de Colombia y de Brasil, y que han contaminado a sus familias y comunidades (…) No puede ser que vengan del exterior a echarle una broma a su propria familia, a su proprio pueblo, eso no lo podemos aceptar.
They struggled in through trails, these irresponsible and unscrupulous Venezuelans; citizens who come from Colombia and Brazil, and who have contaminated their families and communities (…) We cannot accept them coming in and exposing their families, their own people.
“Bioterrorists” and “bioweapons”
Since the pandemic began, the Venezuelan government has focused on two narratives: “Venezuela is equipped to handle the pandemic” — even though a complex humanitarian emergency has left the country with a broken health system, little access to basic services and food insecurity — and that “the virus is spread by Venezuelans who come from abroad”.  Although “xenophobia” is the word used to describe the rejection of people in other countries, there is no word for the rejection of citizens entering their own country. Maduro has gone as far as stating that the Colombian government is purposefully infecting returned migrants with COVID-19 to increase the infection curve in Venezuela. He called it “The Colombian Virus.”
No one lets their guard down! We are giving an intense and hard battle against the Coronavirus that I am sure, sooner rather than later, we will win with the conscience and permanent support of our beloved and dear people. Yes you can Venezuela! pic.twitter.com/TwEikUKqgb — Nicolás Maduro (@maduro_en) July 6, 2020
NGOs, journalists and international organizations have denounced this new stigmatizing narrative, which refers to returned migrants as “bioweapons”  and “bioterrorists”. In July, Vice-President Delcy Rodriguez ordered migrants who enter their country through “illegal” paths outside to be detained in El Dorado, one of Venezuela's most violent and overcrowded prisons.
Delcy Rodriguez announces that migrants who use illegal paths will be moved to El Dorado prison
As more than 90,000 migrants have returned, sectors of the society have replicated the government's narrative, using the same hashtags, such as #trocheros, and promoting the idea that returned Venezuelan migrants are dangerous criminals and unwanted outsiders who should be punished for getting sick and returning home. The following tweet, from the official account of the Strategic Operational Command of the Bolivarian National Armed Force, asks Venezuelans to denounce returning Venezuelan migrants. The tweet has been deleted since it was posted.
SHARE FOR THE HEALTH OF OUR PEOPLE AND FAMILY! If you know someone in your area who has entered the country via pathways, denounce them without anyone knowing it was you. Send an email with the name of the person, describe how they look if you can and the exact address.
Journalist Luz Mely Reyes, director of the media outlet Efecto Cocuyo and the recently launched digital media site Venezuela Migrante shared a guide to refer to migrants in a safer way:
Voy a hacer un ejercicio de pedagogía de comunicación de riesgo. 1 debe evitarse etiquetar a las personas.una persona que usa una trocha no es un trochero. Es decir, esa condición no lo determina en su vida. 2 Evite jugar con las calificaciones. Nadie sabe quién está contagiado pic.twitter.com/IkLIDgHUj4 — Luz Mely Reyes (@LuzMelyReyes) July 15, 2020
I'm going to make a pedagogic game in risk-related communication: 1 avoid labelling people. a person who uses a trail is not a “trailer”. What I mean is that this condition does not determine their life. 2 avoid playing with labels. No one knows who is infected
In June, the government's criminalization of returned migrants was openly rejected by Venezuela's National Assembly, led by the opposition. They stated that Venezuelans abroad are allowed to return home and asked for effective sanitary controls at the borders so that those who come back can be tested instead of quarantined in shelters. On July 19, Maduro said, “…if anyone was offended by any expression that was said, we apologize.” Since early June, only 300 Venezuelans are allowed through the borders each day, a reduction of 80% in the return of Venezuelan citizens to their country. Once inside Venezuela, returned these migrants face a mandatory quarantine in government-managed shelters. Migrants and journalists denounce overcrowding, lack of running water, no medical staff to help those who show COVID-19 symptoms or suffer from other diseases, rotten food as well as reprisals from authorities. Threats to shut the humanitarian corridor between Venezuela and Colombia continue. According to the Colombian government, Venezuelan authorities further restricted the entry of Venezuelans through major avenues, such as the International Bridge Simon Bolivar. Now, Daisi is living on a farm in Ecuador, far away from the city, working more than 14 hours a day to survive amidst a pandemic that left her and her family exposed:
“Si pudiera volver a Venezuela, lo haría para abrazar a mi familia. Pero el camino es un peligro, y más cuando llegas”
“If I could go back to Venezuela, I’d hug my family. But it’s a dangerous road back home, and it’s even more dangerous once we get there”.
