Khalan's Journal (Entry #34)
Rating: T also on AO3 [prev]-[start]-[next]
-----
Day 162 – Evening
Sometimes I do not know what to do with Aya.
I found her at the edge of the lake earlier today kneeling beside a boat. Of course my first instinct was to ask her if she was planning on traveling, but as I drew closer, I noticed a lump of green in the middle of the small boat that she was interacting with.
The lump happened to be two giant turtles! Squished together with no space to move within the tiny confines of the crude, one-man craft! How she managed to capture the poor creatures, I have no idea. But they looked to be in absolute misery crammed against each other in such a manner. It is like a repeat of what happened with the barn all over again.
I get the impression that she was playing with them – much like a young girl would do with dolls. Only fragments of her convoluted love story were revealed to me, and I'm convinced that she was pretending the two turtles were becoming wed; as she was trying to force them to kiss each other.
When I brought up my concerns about their well-being, I was met with quick opposition. Aya claimed that they were happy together and that she had saved them by trapping them in the boat. I beg to differ. They do not look happy in the slightest.
She was offended at the prospect of me releasing them. I don't have the heart to go through with the idea now, as I do not wish to upset her further. In truth, she has been in a bit of a fragile mental state since the incident in the mineshaft, and I can't help but wonder if her more childish actions are a form of coping? It's difficult to tell.
But the fact of the matter is that I worry about crossing boundaries in how I deal with this kind of behavior. She is putting these poor animals in a situation they do not want to be in, but I can't seem to convey that to her without her disagreeing with me entirely.
What should I do? She doesn't see me as any sort of parental figure, so I don't feel like it's within my right to tell her what not to do. Do older siblings do that sort of thing? I'm not sure. I am afraid of overstepping boundaries in our relationship if I were to push the matter further. I do not want to come across as harsh or stern with her.
But it also deeply bothers me to see her treat animals in such a way as a result of her blissful naiveté, so I feel as though something must be done.
Oh, those poor turtles. They do not deserve such hell. There has to be something I can do to help them.
-----
Just a small disclaimer: Aya struggles with understanding animal behavior, as she lived on an alien space station before meeting the others in Drehmal. So even though she doesn't always seem to treat animals very well, she has no ill intentions and genuinely thinks that she's doing the right thing.
She'll learn eventually, though. It just might take some time. Fortunately, Khalan has a better understanding of how to tend to various animals, so he's typically the one taking care of their farm animals and any other pets on the property (including his cat Aakil, Lucy the llama, and the various fish that they have in the decorative pond outside the house).

Bluehost Web Hosting Reviews: It Is Cheap, but Is It Good?
Bluehost Hosting: It Is Cheap, but Is It Good
Bluehost is one of the most popular and, at the same time, most affordable web hosts on the market. In this Bluehost hosting review, we take a look at what’s under the hood, how good the platform really is, and whether it’s the right solution for your next website project.
Here are the things we’re going to cover:
•       Types of web hosting that Bluehost offers
•       Features and pricing
•       Ease of use
•       Performance and load times
•       Customer support
•       Pros and cons of Bluehost hosting
•       Conclusion – should you use Bluehost? What is Bluehost and what type of hosting it offers?
Over the years,Bluehost has grown to be one of the most popular hosting companies out there, especially for WordPress sites.
Just glancing at their homepage and all the different products that Bluehost offers tells you a lot about why it’s won so many users over. First off, Bluehost has numerous different hosting products in their portfolio – not just simple website hosting.
Second, their prices are really, really affordable. Plus, you also get a handful of bonuses thrown in for free. This makes your overall cost of launching a site much lower vs what you’d have to pay with the competition.
But let’s start at the beginning. Here are the different types of hosting that Bluehost has in store, including one that is likely going to be the pick for most users.
Let’s divide the list into a couple of categories:
1. Entry-level web hosting
This is the budget solution in Bluehost’s portfolio of web hosting. These plans are usually chosen by users who are new to the concept of owning a website and needing web hosting to make it happen.
Bluehost has two main offerings that fall under entry-level hosting:
•           Shared web hosting
•           Basic WordPress hosting
While it may seem like the latter is better if you want to use WordPress as your website engine, in reality, both are the same product. From what I’ve seen, this is simply a different marketing framing, but the elements on the inside are the same.
2. Managed WordPress hosting
The basic WordPress hosting plans mentioned above are just that – basic. However, Bluehost also offers a more advanced package called
Compared to the basic offering, the managed variety takes care of all the technical aspects of the hosting setup and Managed WordPress.
In other words, when you’re on managed WordPress hosting, you don’t have to worry about anything related to keeping your site operational. Instead, you can just focus on creating content and promoting your site.
Managed plans also give you more power under the hood 💪, which is important for sites with an established position in the market that receive more traffic.
Bluehost also has a tailor-made offering for WordPress websites running WooCommerce – for eCommerce stores. Those plans come with some WooCommerce-specific elements pre-installed (WooCommerce itself, an optimized theme, payment processing tools, security, extras).
If you’re looking for a host because you are indeed going to be launching a WooCommerce store, this is probably the solution for you.
3. Professional hosting
The last tier of Bluehost hosting is what we can call professional-level hosting. Two main products here:
•           VPS hosting
•           Dedicated servers
The former is a very interesting concept that’s built around hosting virtualization. VPS stands for virtual private server. What you’re actually getting here is access to a web hosting setup that runs as a virtual machine on a bigger, physical server. It’s a setup beneficial when building web apps or other types of web-based products that are not necessarily standard websites.
If you do indeed need a whole physical machine at your disposal, that’s what dedicated servers are for. This type of web hosting is usually the most expensive and powerful hosting option available with most companies.
Bluehost hosting review: features and pricing ⚙️💸
As you read above, Bluehost has many different hosting plans and tiers available, and each of them delivers a slightly different set of features.
For the purpose of this Bluehost hosting review, we’ll look at the entry-level plan called Basic Web Hosting
It’s the most budget-friendly solution in the lineup and, for that reason, also the most popular one among customers.
Here’s a snapshot of the pricing page at the time of writing:
As you can see, Bluehost has a very affordable offering that starts at just $2.95/mo. However, the first thing you must know about this price is that you have to sign up for a three-year contract in order to get it. It is also paid upfront, which means that you do have to shell out $106.20 on day one.
There are options to begin with shorter contracts, but the prices grow with those a bit. Here’s the full picture:
36 months: Basic $2.95/mo, Plus and Choice Plus     $5.45/mo, Pro $13.95/mo
24 months: Basic $3.95/mo, Plus and Choice Plus     $6.95/mo, Pro $15.95/mo
12 months: Basic $4.95/mo, Plus and Choice Plus     $7.45/mo, Pro $18.95/mo
Bluehost doesn’t offer month-to-month payment options
Okay, but what do you get for these prices?
Overall, Bluehost focuses on delivering two things:
the basic set of features and server capabilities that     most users will need,
making those features easy to use and accessible.
All the entry-level plans are very similar on paper, but there are a couple of fine differences.
First of all, none is “more powerful” than the other. Speaking in terms of computing power and the “scale of website,” they can all handle the same load. The differences are mainly in the size of website and number of websites you’re allowed to run.
On the Basic plan, you are allowed only one website. Your disk space is also limited to 50 GB.
All the other plans let you run unlimited websites and  consume unlimited disk space while doing so.
This is great because what it means in practice is that if you want to build 2+ websites, Bluehost will only charge you $5.45/mo for that.
Here’s what else you get.
The Basic plan:
24/7 customer support via phone and chat (more on the     quality of that later in this Bluehost hosting review),
access to custom themes from within the Bluehost panel,
a free domain name for the first year(!) plus access to a domain manager,
email hosting – albeit it’s kind of hidden in the     panel,
a $100 Google Ads credit and Google My Business     integration,
free CDN integration – a “content delivery network”     hook-up means that your website’s data is served from multiple servers     across the web instead of just one machine; this improves your site speed     a lot,
free SSL certificates.
The Choice plan throws in a free Office 365 subscription for one month. The Choice Plus gives you additional access to free domain privacy (so that no one can check your personal data associated with the domain name) and free automatic backups. Lastly, the Pro plan offers an additional dedicated IP address (important when building web apps/tools, not so much for standard websites).
Overall, there really is nothing here that’s missing. Bluehost has put some real thought behind what the essential web hosting features are and then put them all together in this offering.
The free domain is a huge deal in particular! You’d usually have to pay around $15 for a new domain name registration. While it’s not a lot, it still adds up to your overall website launch bill. The fact that Bluehost throws that in for free is great.
⚠️ Note. Mind the renewal prices. Bluehost, like most hosting companies, will charge you a different amount when first signing up for their service vs renewing after a while. Those renewal prices are higher. Take a look at that pricing screenshot above one more time. See the crossed off price below the main price? That’s the renewal price – it’s what you’re going to pay after your initial contract is up.
Bluehost hosting review: ease of use 👐
Bluehost does a lot to make the signup and website launch process as smooth as possible. They realize that whoever’s choosing the entry-level plan probably doesn’t have a lot of experience with web hosting. Bluehost tries to make it possible for that user to configure everything on their own without outside help. All within the Bluehost hosting interface.
Once you get through the purchase process on Bluehost’s website and finalize everything, you’ll be invited to your new user profile page.
Right away, Bluehost will ask you how you want to go about building your website and if you want to have WordPress installed on your setup. They will even ask you whether you want to work on your site in the classic model (by picking a theme and modifying it) or use Bluehost’s new builder interface.
I went with the first option since it’s more common for WordPress users to do so.
Next, right in the main dashboard, you get a couple of suggestions as to what you should do to make your site better:
You can log into your WordPress site directly from the dashboard as well – just click the Log in to WordPress button in the top right corner.
If you take a look at the sidebar to the left, you’ll find links to other useful sections:
Home.     It’s where you are right now.
My Sites.     Since you can have more than one site on most Bluehost hosting plans, this     is where you can see them all.
Marketplace.     Bluehost makes it easy to integrate your site with other third-party     tools, add-ons, and also upgrade your hosting tier if needed. This section     is where you can purchase and install those integrations with a couple of     clicks.
WordPress themes and plugins. This is a subsection under Marketplace, but I     feel I should highlight it here. Bluehost gives you access to custom     WordPress themes right from the dashboard. It also hooks up to your site     directly, so that you can purchase and install those themes all from the     Bluehost interface. This can be a huge timesaver.
Email & Office.     Bluehost gives you an option to integrate your site with hosted email via     Google Workspace and Microsoft 365. This is where you can enable     everything.
Domains.     This is where you can manage your website domain(s) and purchase new ones.
Marketing Tools.     This section is all about making it easier to integrate your site with     popular marketing channels such as Google Ads, Google My Business, and     others.
Advanced.     Go here if you want to access cPanel (if this doesn’t sound like English,     then Advanced is probably not a section for you).
Let’s look into what’s possible when managing your site, since that’s what most of us will want to do.
When you go to My Sites and select your site from the list, you’ll see the following panel:
This is a nice view of your site’s status all in one place. From here, you can access the themes you have installed, your plugins, and even oversee your marketing promotions, backups, user accounts, security, and more.
What’s great here is that everything is presented nicely, and you’re spared all the server lingo. You don’t have to be a pro to know what’s going on.
And I remind you that we are dealing here with basic, entry-level hosting setup that did cost a mere $2.95/mo. So…impressive.
Bluehost performance and load times 📈
Okay, so we know that Bluehost is cheap. But is it fast? There has to be a trade-off somewhere, right? Is it performance?
Let’s find out:
We did a very simple test. We set up a site using Bluehost’s tools, published some dummy content on it, added images, picked a theme and configured it, and basically made the site look real.
Then, we also added a couple of plugins for good measure, like WPForms, Yoast SEO, Jetpack, and a couple more.
I have to give it to Bluehost…considering this is budget hosting, the results are more than impressive!
Going below one sec for US traffic is pretty much all you can ask for with any hosting platform – even the more expensive ones.
Bluehost hosting review: customer support 🚑
Bluehost offers 24/7 phone and live chat support. Apart from that, there’s also a knowledge base where you can find tutorials and answers to the most common questions people have about Bluehost’s platform.
You can access the support chat from the main contact page on Bluehost’s site.
Bluehost asks a couple of questions to identify you as a customer, and then gets you through to a support agent.
From our experience when writing this Bluehost hosting review, a support agent got to us pretty much immediately after starting the chat.
The interaction was positive, the agent offered advice and was willing to help. However, we seem to had hit a wall in terms of what they’re actually authorized to do.
Granted, I did ask him to do a fairly specific thing.
Pros and cons of Bluehost hosting 👍👎
Before we give you our final rating in this Bluehost hosting review, let’s look at a quick list of pros and cons.
Pros 👍
The entry price is more than affordable ($2.95/mo).
They give you a free domain for the first year.
The setup is really easy to do, especially if you want     to use WordPress.
The user interface is great, making it easy to do     simple modifications and/or maintenance tasks.
The load times are really impressive, managing to go     below the one-second mark.
The support is quick to respond.
Cons 👎
The renewal prices are much higher than the entry-level     ones. That’s why you’re better off going for the max-term contract right     out the gate.
While you can set up hosted email on the platform, it’s     a bit hidden. You have to go to the cPanel view and set everything up     there by hand.
The reviews on the web are mixed. Some users seem to be     having issues with their setups. However, many of those reviews are from a     while back.
Bluehost hosting review conclusion: Why use it over another host 💪
At the end of the day, Bluehost looks like a great solution for the budget-minded person who wants to launch a new site as quickly as possible and also fairly cheaply.
Bluehost has all the basic hosting features you might expect, and the performance isn’t lacking in any way either.
Granted, the tests we did haven’t been carried out over a long period of time, so you’re mileage may vary, but the early indicators are certainly more than positive!
👉 Go to Bluehost
⚡ Pro tip: If you’re looking for a host to take care of all your new website ideas in one place, consider the $5.45/mo plan at Bluehost. It’s the first hosting tier that Bluehost offers that allows unlimited websites.

Your Wi-Fi Are Belong to Us
Tumblr media
Therefore I only got home from the long day of the job, and per usual, my mobile automatically joins into some WPA-2 dwelling wireless community.  Upon unlocking your mobile, a quick looks that read"please input your system security secret."  I input my primary eatel technical support because follows"try2gu3s$th!s", the instant fades, and I'm attached to my wifi.  That is odd...I log into my networking accounts and navigate softly.
WrWrapp, a couple of jobs, emails and call it an evening time. Within an hour, or so or so-so, just about every single webpage is seen and keystroke entered have already been photographed, dumped in plain-text and also stored into a distant location made using a cookie cutter.
The Way!?  A rogue or"Evil Twin" entry purpose was produced along with also my apparatus kindly connected into it.  In summary, a mobile is aware of to join with anaireless AP once in scope mechanically.  Having a tiny signal improve and also a couple of preferences, the device joins to a wicked AP alternatively. Allows state the gadget has already been attached into a system and also the attacker would like to push it on the rogue AP.
Inside this instance, the attacker could do work with of an instrument like Airplay ng to flooding the focused apparatus using deauthenticationackets.  By doing that the gadget is subsequently disconnected out of the stable AP.  Provided that the rogue AP's sign is high and also the device is divided in the initial, it is going to try to set an association to this rogue entry stage.
These days, we'll become slightly bit more detail in regards to the various tools employed to make a ninja AP, the way they're deployed and configured, in addition to countermeasures from such a strike.
Once configured correctly, hohostedmplements IEEE802.1x ray Authenticator and Authentication Server impersonation strike.  That is generally set up to get qualifications and connect with some the client or client machines launching further attacks.
Dnsmasq can be employed in combination with hostapd to extend a regional DNS server, DHCP Server, along with TFTP server hosting.  (w/Support for both DHCPv6 and also PXE). The Two tools may Be Set up inside Linux by Utilizing the next controls in tea terminal.
Sudo apt-get put in hostapd dnsmasq
When the applications are mounted, a couple of alterations are designed to setup files previous to being set up.
As a way to correctly install hostapdthe port it does run will likewise have to get configured.  The inherently harmonious wireless port is placed in to screen style and place within an AP using DHCP and DNS given from dnsmasq.  The radio port is subsequently bridged into an ethernet port to provide access.
To Spot precisely the interface, type the next command into Final:
'' we May See the wireless port recorded as wlan0 the seaport Is Subsequently placed in to screen style through the following controls:
Subsequent, make a new directory below your property folder then navigate into it.  This listing may support the system documents for the co-hosted dnsmasq. A good instance for every single file is displayed under.  Copy them to your favorite editor and then transform them so.  Some different options are available into every one of the setup data documents for an even more intricate AP or host.  Please consult with this maman pages utilize the -h flag inside of just final to find out additional.
When the documents were stored, it's the right time for you to assign the gateway, netmask, and navigation table into the radio user interface.
The hostapd and also dnsmasq providers have been subsequently begun with all the setup documents supplied:
If create outcome signal should appear like this: hosted and even dnsmasq products and companies have been configured running and adequately.  A casualty is now able all state tech support to relate into this rogue AP.  But, there's not any online entry.  As a way to give users of some victim system that an attacker has to configure iptables to precisely forward traffic.
With this particular example, the subsequent commands are Utilized to set up and also enable IP routing:
Online accessibility is currently provided by way of the ethernet port along with traffic has been routed using the simple access position.
At this stage, the attacker may induce aims to link into this apply Delivering deauthentication packets Using the Assistance of both all airplay Produce a fake host.conf Allowing visitors redirection to desirable Ip Address's Fakehosts.conf may likewise be used appropriately for dns Restore through the H flag together using dnsmasq.
And an Apache web server could likewise be used to spoof dns asks and also control targeted visitors to position downloads into malicious data documents. Can that you nevertheless feel protected and sound with wifi? Fortunately, you'll find means to battle or stop such a strike from taking place equally at home as well as at the job spot.
As clarified previously we are now able to see exactly how much harm a rogue entry point could perform.
The next drop-down boxes involve countermeasures which might be used to shield gadgets and infrastructures in opposition to such an attack.
Use Sturdy Security Together Using 802.1X, the credentials taken for authentication, for example as login passwords, have been not sent without encryption on the radio medium.  Additionally, 802.1X offers active per user, per-session safety keys, so getting rid of the administrative load and also security dilemmas related to security keys that are static.
Explore Wireless Bridge Frames & Expel origin
A notebook with just two wireless adaptors-- only one card can be utilized from the rogue access level along with one other one can be used to forward requests as a result of an invisible connection into the strong access position. Utilize handled buttons and then utilize their port-based stability to filter MAC's or disable interfaces.
An entry line deliberately drifted right to a jack in the swap isn't going to do the job.
Use stationary IP addresses
When permanent IP addresses are all employed, an attacker should manually assign the right IP address into the entry stage until it may access this system. Work with passive & active entrance stage scan.
Lively scans deliver probes using a clickable SSID identify to detect rogue AP's along with customers.
Though this wowon'ttop a soldier that is constant, it will also benefit deter a single particular.  The attacker would have to use sniffing instruments to recognize precisely the hidden SSID previous to establishing a bogus AP, too, to replicate a famous system's mac address to own an opportunity in linking.
Do Work with of a VPN
Irrespective of the system, a VPN needs to be put into place on completion user apparatus to reestablish traffic.

When they are doing the job, it affects the overall cluster performance because of the flow control issues. The node which is executing the read job is overloaded and delays the certification and writes apply process. The read job queries can’t be split across the cluster.  So, they don’t want that particular node as a part of the cluster during the report generation. So, I recommended this approach. The overall job will take 3-4 hours. During that particular time, the topology will be 4 node clusters and one asynchronous replica. Once the job is completed, the async replica node will be again joined to the GR cluster.  For testing this, I have installed and configured the group replication cluster with 5 nodes ( gr1,gr2,gr3,gr4,gr5 ). The cluster is operating with a single primary mode.mysql> select member_host,member_state,member_role,member_version from performance_schema.replication_group_members; +-------------+--------------+-------------+----------------+ | member_host | member_state | member_role | member_version | +-------------+--------------+-------------+----------------+ | gr5         | ONLINE       | SECONDARY   | 8.0.22         | | gr4         | ONLINE       | SECONDARY   | 8.0.22         | | gr3         | ONLINE       | SECONDARY   | 8.0.22         | | gr2         | ONLINE       | SECONDARY   | 8.0.22         | | gr1         | ONLINE       | PRIMARY     | 8.0.22         | +-------------+--------------+-------------+----------------+ 5 rows in set (0.00 sec)Using Percona Server for MySQL 8.0.22.mysql> select @@version, @@version_commentG *************************** 1. row ***************************         @@version: 8.0.22-13 @@version_comment: Percona Server (GPL), Release 13, Revision 6f7822f 1 row in set (0.01 sec)  Percona Live ONLINE, the open source database conference, is coming up! Audience Analysis Blog #9: Online, Interactive Audiences in a Digital Media World
How does one become famous overnight? Is it as easy as it sounds? To some people, it feels like it, to others, not so much. In the entertainment world, it is possible for people to instantly become a star. With films, there have been cases were directors see someone and ask them to be in their projects. With a growing amount of technology and media platforms, it is more possible to be a sensation. Take Rebecca Black for example. In early 2011, she had a video for the song Friday uploaded to YouTube. Within the first month, it garnered 30 million views. Overtime, the song had been re-done in the form of parodies, remixes and was featured on the television series Glee. The discussion of this blog will be how audiences in media have changed through one that are online and interactive and how they pose a challenge in figuring out audiences in this age of new media.
Over the past decade, there have been changes in technology that allows people to create, upload and view media content. In a case like Rebecca Black, she uploaded the Friday music video using the video site YouTube. One concept that I would like to start with is digitalization, a method that allows images and sounds of media to be recorded and transmitted. (Sullivan, pp 268) Media has its content converted into a language consisting of ones and zeroes called digital or binary code, there are many benefits to this language as it provides an efficient amount of space, supports the quality of the content and allows different devices communicate with one another with no problem. With digitalization, there would be endless possibilities in artists in both video and musical to create and upload their content to share with a world that may not otherwise realize their existence without the use of technology.
Even when people do not aspire to become musicians or filmmakers, they can still take part in digitalization by creating content of their own and uploading it for fun. Some people would create user-generated content (UGC) among their favourite media such as video games. This particular content allows people to create their own content and share with others. One example is video game mods, short for modifications. What users would do is take certain video games, using some code, they would add a little spin to the games. What I am about to show is a WatchMojo video of games that are often modded. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1C_Ds63FqN8
With many people creating their own content, they would usually store it in an online place called the cloud. Clouds would not only allow web servers to store files but to have applications in which millions of users can connect with media content similarly. (Sullivan, pp 271) Clouds, video sharing sites like YouTube, Wikipedia and social media sites like Facebook have one thing in common. They are considered platforms, digital infrastructures that allow communication between at least two people or groups. The infrastructures function as intermediaries within all sorts of user types. These platforms provide users with a space to communicate with one another. Examples of these platforms include online shopping sites, social media and video sharing media.
One platform that I would like to touch down on is social media. Now, social media is one of those things that people have a love-hate relationship with. While most of us would use social media on a regular basis, we all have that one friend that hates it with a passion. I would often jokingly tell my dad, just be glad that you are not on social media, your head would explode. I know people that complain about sites like Facebook because it is one of the reasons that we have become slaves to our phones. To some extent, I have to agree because I have read articles about the ‘fear of missing out.’ Even if those of use have checked Facebook three times a day, we tend to have that anxiety with us ‘Liking’ multiple pages and having 600+ friends. To best describe social media, they are services based on the internet that enable a certain amount of people, whether they are one individual or a community, to connect with one another in the creation, distribution, engagement and providing of user- generated content. (Sullivan, pp 271) There are differences in demographics among certain social media platforms, with Facebook and YouTube having a large usage whereas to sites like Twitter and Instagram have their usages be different in other demographics.
In the world of social media, there are several terms that some users may not realize exist but are useful in understanding the platforms. Measures of exposure are built-in to every social media platform in demonstrating the number of users that viewed the content. These measures would include a post on Facebook or a tweet. A dashboard allows users with a number of ways in seeing the amount of uses that people reacted or comment on a particular post. Using Tumblr the past few months, I am so used to referring to the dashboard as a place where we can generate and upload content. As someone who has used Facebook within the past decade, these two terms, measures of exposure and dashboard are new to me, I would so be used to seeing the dashboard as ‘the wall.’ Viral posts are common in social media as it is content that is shared a million times within a short period of time. (Sullivan, pp 277) While Sullivan’s book said that it can be a YouTube video or Twitter post, I would have to disagree as it can be any form of media content from a photo or a news story. There are a wide variety of viral posts in all social media platforms that are often shared by people around the world.
When it comes to posts and social media platforms, we generate and share all sorts of content but what if we could make posts about our lives and the world around us? This is when the concept of blogs and vlogs come in. There are obvious differences between the two log types as blogs are short for web logs while vlogs are short for video logs. Like me, some of you would own a laptop and use it on a regular basis. Almost every laptop is equipped with a built-in camcorders or camera. This would make way for people to create their own vlogs and upload them to YouTube. A more general definition of vlogs would be content that has a user make a discussion in front of a camera and use little to no editing. (Sullivan, pp 282) Vlogs uploaded to video sharing sites like YouTube would include responses to other videos, diary entries and comedy performances. One example of the Vlog that I would like to show is that of Stephen Georg. I have mentioned him on an earlier blog about Twitch Streaming, he actually has two channels. One that allows him to record playthroughs of video games and the other that has him ‘life-blogging,’ or recording a series of diary entries. This is one example of one of his life-vlogs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZrIHMzhJh7M
Switching to blogs, or web logs, they tend to be a little simpler in having online websites be used in a journal format. To learn the origins of blogging, you would have to go back to the late 1990s when the first sites that enabled blogging were OpenDiary and Live Journal. Sites like this and Blogger.com have people create their own website that focuses on blogging within seconds. One does not have to understand programming languages such as Java or HTML in order to maintain the blogging sites. (Sullivan, pp 289) In 2010, when social media sites like Facebook and Twitter gained traction and took over the blogging scene. One obvious example of a blog is mine or any blog on Tumblr. While some people would blog about photography or working on cars, I am blogging not because it is part of an assignment, but it is part of me educating users about the concepts of audiences in how they evolved with the use of technology.
I have often told people that we are so fortunate to live in a technological driven society and sites like YouTube that allow us to create and upload content to entertain others. In addition, social media sites like Facebook help us share and engage with content as it adds elements like humour in what goes on in the news today. These sites also offer users with a chance to add their own spin on already existing content such as video games with the mods. Even if we do not consider ourselves to be artists, it still allows us to be creative in offering our own texts and provide other users with some form of entertainment. Even blogging sites have a way of allowing users to create their own content, whether it is in plain text, images, or videos.

Tumblr media
Another day, another mainnet launch. Or at least, that’s sometimes how it can feel in the blockchain space, as every project seems to be scrambling to be the latest and greatest in balancing the trade-offs between speed, scalability and security. Unfortunately, many of them end up languishing with little development activity and precious few users.
Therefore, when a new project comes along that appears to be stirring up genuine excitement among established players and investors in the space, it’s worth taking a second look. Despite being new on the scene and still in the process of developing its testnet, Solana is one such project.
It’s currently associated with names such as Bison Trails and Chainlink, having previously garnered $20 million in investment from high-profile funds such as 500 Startups and Multichain Capital. It also recently sold out of all its tokens in a Dutch auction, even despite the mid-March market carnage. So, what’s going on with Solana to generate such significant interest from the industry?
The background
Back in 2017, CEO Anatoly Yakovenko founded Solana with the ambitious goal of creating a blockchain platform that could scale for global adoption. Yakovenko had previously led the team developing operating systems at telecommunications manufacturer Qualcomm, where as he told Cointelegraph: “I was always a performance geek. I spent 12 years at Qualcomm trying to squeeze out every last bit of performance from hardware.” He also engineered a distributed operating system at Mesosphere and worked on compression at Dropbox.
Upon founding Solana, he onboarded a team of similarly experienced professionals. The company’s chief technology officer and principal architect, Greg Fitzgerald, had also previously worked at Qualcomm across the full spectrum of embedded systems. Its chief operating officer, Raj Gokal, brought experience in product management and finance from his time as a venture investor at General Catalyst and from managing products at his own startup, Sano, and at Omada Health. The chief scientist, Eric Williams, is a particle physicist who studied at Berkeley and gained his Ph.D. while at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, commonly referred to as CERN, hunting for the Higgs boson particle.
The Solana team has been able to attract some impressive investors and partners on its road to mainnet launch. Multichain Capital led a $20 million funding round that concluded in July 2019. More recently, the company ran a Dutch auction through Coinlist for the sale of 8 million Sol tokens, raising a further $1.76 million from 91 companies. In total, Solana has sold 186 million tokens and raised $25.6 million from token sales.
Solana has also attracted several companies to participate in Tour de Sol, its incentivized testnet. The most high-profile of these is Bison Trails, which is also part of the Libra Association. Bison Trails serves as a validator node on the Solana testnet but has also integrated support for Solana to its infrastructure-as-a-service offering.
The issues at hand
Like many other blockchain projects, the Solana team has the scalability challenge in mind while developing the platform. However, Solana aims to achieve scalability without compromising on security or decentralization. Both have been an issue with other blockchains, particularly those using delegated proof-of-stake, which has proven itself prone to manipulation.
Solana also aims to solve another problem inherent in blockchain consensus: agreement on time. In any ledger, the time that the entry is made is critical, as it forms the backbone of the ledger’s chronology. If a ledger is held on a centralized server, the system clock simply timestamps entries as they’re recorded. However, in a decentralized system, all nodes are working to their own clocks. Therefore, time is something that the network nodes must agree on as much as the nature of the transaction itself.
Furthermore, in Bitcoin and other proof-of-work blockchains, the amount of time a miner takes to solve a cryptographic nonce is what governs the difficulty level. So, in the context of a blockchain, recording the passage of time is key. Different blockchains solve this challenge in different ways. However, achieving agreement on time ends up consuming a heavy load in messaging between network nodes.
For example, Hedera Hashgraph, a platform with similar goals to Solana, takes a timestamp from a supermajority of nodes on the network and calculates the median. This has allowed the Hashgraph network to quickly overtake Ethereum in transaction numbers. Christian Hasker, the chief marketing officer of Hedera Hashgraph, told Cointelegraph:
“Since open access of our platform in September 2019 (roughly 6 months), Hedera has seen over 80 million transactions conducted on our network. In comparison, it took Ethereum a little over two and a half years to hit that same milestone.”
Proof-of-history
To overcome the challenge of recording time, Solana uses a unique protocol called proof-of-history, otherwise known as PoH, that encodes the passage of time into the blockchain data itself without requiring specific inputs or messaging between network nodes. It uses a feature called a verifiable delay function, or VDF, which takes a known amount of time to compute and is limited to operating on a single central processing unit core, meaning processing can’t be expedited by using multiple processors.
The Solana protocol encodes the results of each VDF into the block of its successor. In doing so, it provides an immutable log of the passage of time before consensus even takes place. By removing the load of time-based messaging, Solana claims to achieve transaction speeds of nearly 50,000 per second.
Yakovenko concisely explained the importance of reaching consensus regarding time within a blockchain environment, telling Cointelegraph: “Because we had PoH, we were able to make strong assumptions about time and reduce a lot of the complexity in the implementation.” Regarding the role of VDFs in future blockchain implementations, Yakovenko elaborated on the complexity of implementing them:
“VDFs are still fairly new, and their proposed implementations require a lot of verification hardware like ours, or new ASICS. […] Since our scaling approach depends on modern systems, our VDF works exceptionally well for our network. With our current infrastructure, we’ve been able to leapfrog the current state of the art and deliver throughput of 50,000 transactions per second with 400ms block times on the mainnet today.”
Tower Byzantine fault tolerance and proof-of-stake
Solana uses a variation on the practical Byzantine fault tolerance model used by Hyperledger Fabric and others called tower Byzantine fault tolerance. This consensus model is designed to incentivize network participants to act in the interests of the network at all times. Nodes stake their tokens on the validity of the most recent proof-of-history hash in a similar way to how they’d stake tokens on block validity in other blockchains.
Similar to pBFT, the more hashes that are confirmed after any given vote, the longer it will take to roll back that vote. Validators cannot vote for a fork once they’ve voted on a particular hash without being penalized. Solana also uses proof-of-stake to determine who participates in the network as a validator. Token holders who don’t have the hardware to join as a validator can delegate a validator to participate in block production.
To summarize, proof-of-history acts as a clock for the network, whereas tBFT incentivizes and penalizes validators to act in the network’s interests. PoS enables token holders to act as delegators, deciding who serves as a validator.
Taking on scalability
The Solana team didn’t stop at inventing an entirely new consensus method to overcome the scalability challenge, and as Yakovenko told Cointelegraph, proof-of-history, tBFT and PoS are just for consensus. He added: “We had to innovate 8 more times to continue unblocking other scaling problems ranging from parallel transaction processing to real-time block streaming across the globe.”
Eight other innovations supposedly all play a role in speeding up processing time or generally making Solana run more efficiently. For example, Sealevel is a feature that enables the processing of multiple smart contracts in parallel. Turbine works in a way that’s comparable to BitTorrent, breaking data up into smaller packets to enable scalability between nodes, allowing Solana to support thousands of nodes running concurrently.
Developers needed
Recently, Solana teamed up with oracle provider Chainlink to build a superfast oracle that updates every 400 milliseconds. Yakovenko told Cointelegraph that the move was in response to recent market failures due to network congestion. He expanded on the company’s plans to involve more developers and partners over time, telling Cointelegraph:
“We have a great accelerator program that has over 450 applicants already, so developers are going out of their way to find us. They want to build consumer-grade apps but that simply isn’t possible with the infrastructure at their disposal today. Given the pent up demand to build, we’re hopeful that developers will come to check out Solana and that a sizable percentage of those that do will migrate their dapps.”
Hasker said that Hedera Hashgraph similarly sees that there’s an unmet demand from developers, stating:
“In addition to addressing the scalability and security required for applications, dApp developers prize ease-of-use and cost as major drivers of adoption. In addition, dApps want to know that the platform is stable and that it won’t fork so they don’t have to maintain multiple code bases. Finally, they want reassurance that the platform will be around for the long term, and that it’s governed by a trusted council that understands how business runs, and what businesses need.”

12 Best CMS for 2019
Tumblr media
2019 is half over, but don’t let that stop you from trying something new… specifically, a new CMS. “But Ezequiel, good buddy, I don’t have time to check out a whole new content management system. I have websites to make!”, you say, in those exact words.
That’s fair, but you should be keeping an eye on the up-and comers anyway. These are the people who have the sheer brass walnuts (which are a real thing, unisex, and available to anyone with money) to go up against giants like WordPress, Joomla, and mostly WordPress. They do this with nothing but a pretty good idea, a GitHub repository, and sometimes some corporate funding of some kind, if they’re very lucky. You ignore them at your own peril.
Well, maybe not peril, but these projects deserve a look.
The CMS that have been selected for this list were (almost) all launched post-2017 (or at least their GitHub repos were), and they’re all free, or at least have a free plan. They’re also all under active development. Let’s get started…
Flextype
Flextype is a simple, PHP7-based, flat-file CMS that’s designed to keep things flexible, allowing you to create more or less anything you want. And I do mean “anything”; Flextype makes it dead-easy to define custom fields for any content entry, and has a built-in theme editor
The actual content editing is easy enough, with a simple WYSIWYG editor, though Markdown support is available via plugin. Doing anything fancy with the content requires the use of WordPress-style shortcodes, though.
All in all, it’s a solid foundation for a CMS, and I can’t wait to see what they do with it.
Tumblr media
rwtxt
rwtxt is designed to be a simple, searchable notepad where you can jot down notes, keep a journal, or use it as a pastebin. It’s reminiscent of a wiki in that, in its default configuration, anyone can add a page to the public area of the site.
However, you can also add a “domain”, or a sort of personal notepad where you can either keep your private notes private, or make them public and publicly searchable. You can also log into multiple domains at a time, so you could theoretically use rwtxt to run a site with multiple blogs that are thematically different. (You can also add custom CSS to a domain, for further differentiation.)
The whole experience is very bare-bones, but I’m fascinated to see where it goes.

Publii
Publii is one of a few new GUI-focused Static CMS apps that run on the desktop, rather than on your server. You download the app, use it to build a static site, then upload that site onto the hosting of your choice. It’s not a new idea, but it’s one that seems to have picked up steam, lately.
Publii in particular seems to be the most modern and feature-complete of these CMS, and is open source and free to use. It seems to be blog-focused, and there is a marketplace with both free and paid theme options of excellent quality.
Other features include website syncing (supports FTP, GitHub Pages, Gitlab, AWS, Netlify, or Google Cloud), a preview function, a WordPress importer, and a focus on SEO. It’s very definitely focused at more beginner-level users.
Tumblr media
ClassicPress
Speaking, however briefly, of WordPress, ClassicPress is literally a WordPress fork that notably lacks a certain block-based content editor that lots of people disliked. Otherwise, the current version aims to improve security and optimization, remove some bloat, and points the CMS squarely at business users who might be put off by quirky language such as “Howdy”.
The biggest difference so far, besides using the classic content editor, is the governance of the project; there’s a very large focus placed on democracy and voting to determine the future of the project, where WordPress’ future is largely written by Automattic (the company that makes it).
Tumblr media
Twill
Twill isn’t strictly a CMS, as such. It’s a “CMS toolkit”, designed to help developers very quickly create a custom CMS to match any need. As such, it’s not something you’d want to install just to start your own blog.
But if you’re a developer, or a business owner who needs a custom-built CMS, it does look like a promising way to get exactly the functionality you need, faster. It’s based on the Laravel PHP framework, so if that’s something you already use and like, try it out.
Tumblr media
Canner
CannerCMS is similar to Twill in that it’s a build-your-own CMS kit of sorts. Unlike Twill, it seems to be Node-based, so if writing JavaScript is more your style, CannerCMS has you covered.
Incidentally, they also has a SaaS version of the product, which takes care of all the hosting, CDN configuration, and other general hassles for you. The open source edition also apparently lacks multi-language support, which the SaaS version has.
Tumblr media
Grafite CMS
Grafite CMS is a sort of dual purpose CMS. By that I mean you can use it as a standalone CMS, on its own and fully functional, or as an add-on to an existing site or web app. Now lots of CMS will allow you to do this via an API of some sort, but Grafite CMS actually comes with two separate setup/installation modes, depending on whether you want to use Grafite CMS on its own, or integrate it into something larger.
It’s also modular, in that content types like “Pages”, Blog”, “Events”, and other are modules that you can activate or deactivate at will. You can, of course, make your own modules if you need a custom content type. It’s very much based on a “use only what you need” philosophy.
Tumblr media
Vapid
Vapid has been mentioned once before here on Web Designer Depot, but it’s worth looking at again, in case you missed it. It’s billed as an intentionally simple CMS, and they mean it. The dashboard is literally generated based on the tags you use in your templates. Every time you mark part of a page as editable content, the dashboard will add the appropriate form field in the admin UI.
It’s written in NodeJS, and you can host the app on your own server for free if you know how (the code itself is open source), or you can deploy your website to Vapid’s own hosting service. Publishing your site there does cost money of course, but the plans are quite reasonable, with the first paid plan starting at 7 USD.
Tumblr media
Zola
Zola is a static site generator written in Rust, so it does depend on using a command line interface, but otherwise, they keep development simple. I mean, when’s the last time you heard of a static site generator that didn’t have any dependencies? There are even premade binaries for Windows, Mac, and Linux, so installation is quick and simple.
So yeah, even if you’ve got only a rudimentary understanding of programming like myself, you can probably build sites with Zola. It’s got a list of features about a mile long, including custom taxonomies, LiveReload, Netlify support, shortcodes, image processing, and more. The content is all handled by Markdown, of course.
Tumblr media
Academic
Academic is interesting because it’s a CMS built on top of another CMS. Specifically, it’s a website / page builder built on top of the Hugo static site generator. It’s designed to take the complexity of a static site generator, and make everything sort of drag and drop. And I do mean everything.
There’s support for easily managing custom pages, talks, slides, tutorials, as well as all the usual content types. There’s multilingual support, and everything can be written in Markdown and, interestingly enough, LaTeX if you’re the math-loving type. Existing themes mostly seem to be Material Design-based, but of course you can make your own.
Tumblr media
Piranha CMS
I didn’t want our ASP.NET lovers out there feel like we’d forgotten them. For you, Piranha CMS looks rather promising. Interestingly for an ASP.NET CMS, it can run on Windows, Mac, and Linux, with a focus on speed and easy publishing. Considering the tech it’s based on, it’s also Azure-ready right out of the box, if that’s something that matters to you.
Besides all that, you can edit your content as HTML or Markdown, or even plain text. There’s also a Gutenberg-style block editor. There’s image processing, easy internal linking, and even easy ways to run multiple blogs on the same site. The whole thing seems to be aimed at big publishers.
Tumblr media
Squidex
Squidex is an ASP.NET-based open source headless CMS (that means they don’t dictate how any of your HTML gets output) that you can run on your own server, or use their SaaS option which also has a limited free plan. It’s the sort of CMS that’s meant to be used as a central repository for all of your content, which you can access anywhere via their API. So theoretically, you could use it to run multiple internal and / or external websites.
As such, it’s the sort of CMS where you sort of have to build your own dashboard, as well as the front end user interface. That said, it does look real good, and offers loads of options to help you build the CMS of your (apparently quite nerdy) dreams.
