Mori and Abuse
I’m making this because the BSD fandom has 2 modes for interpreting Mori and it’s either evil evil child abuser or spineless bastard and I HATE both of them.
Mori is an abuser, yes, but the way he abuses characters is very atypical, and not at all what most people expect. His abuse is almost all psychological, the only character we can say for sure has been physically abused by him is Yosano, and we’re only shown one instance of that.
For simplicity, I’ll be referring to his abuse of Dazai, Chuuya, Koyo and Yosano, but I believe it could be said that Kyuusaku and potentially the Akutagawa’s have suffered because of him.
To understand why Mori has abused certain characters, we must understand a bit about him as a person. This is potentially why Mori’s actions are so wildly skewed by the fandom, because no one wants to observe him too closely (but that’s a whole other post). Simply put, Mori is a military man. He does anything and everything to achieve the “optimal solution”, he has a plan and if he has to get his hands dirty to reach his goal, he will. Emotions and attachments go out the window for him, most of the time at least, because he would sacrifice anything, and anyone, to achieve his goal. Most of the time at least. That’s why he used Yosano, because what’s the life of one girl to the safety of his nation? That’s why he manufactured Oda’s and his orphans deaths, because the prize outweighed the cost.
Mori is logical and reserved, so we must observe all his actions with the lens that he has a reason for what he does, because he (almost) always has a reason.
I’ll start by referring to Mori’s abuse of Dazai, because he’s a bit of a special case and also the one that the fandom overall gets the most wrong. Mori’s abuse of Dazai is usually twisted to be sexual or physical, when there is absolutely no evidence of that. People like to bring up Dazai’s abuse of Akutagawa, or that one throwaway line from The Day I Picked Up Dazai as evidence, but neither of those hold up in my opinion.
Firstly, just because Dazai’s abuse of Akutagawa was partly physical, doesn’t mean he himself underwent physical abuse. Just like Mori, Dazai always has reasons for what he does, and his reason for what he did to Akutagawa was tailored to Akutagawa and his ability, therefore not something that Mori would have done to Dazai. Not to excuse Dazai’s abuse of Akutagawa, of course, but the fact of the matter is that Dazai’s abuse was a test of Akutagawa, and a punishment because Akutagawa didn’t adhere to Dazai’s standards. This abuse is the result of Mori’s own abuse, yes, but it’s not as straightforward as “Mori hit Dazai, ergo Dazai hit Akutagawa”.
The line from TDIPUD is also poor evidence, as all it is is Oda telling Dazai that what he’s doing won’t hurt and Dazai responding that Mori says the same about the needles he gives him. The fact that this is taken as abuse is really weird to me, why is that the assumption here? Mori is a doctor, there are multiple reasons for him to be giving Dazai needles. And the fact that Mori says it’s not going to hurt just sounds like the typical “doctor giving a kid a shot” exchange.
Dazai hates pain, so obviously Mori would lie and say that it isn’t going to hurt. Mori cares for Dazai’s well-being, which is what makes Dazai a bit of an outlier, as Mori shows care for him before he’s found a reason to justify that care. This is evidenced by their exchange in the beginning of Dazai, Chuuya: Fifteen, which is very important as it gives us an insight into Mori’s perspective during that time, where he panics because he hasn’t achieved the “optimal solution” by keeping Dazai alive, but then justifies that action by deciding Dazai is too good an asset to throw away.
And here-in lies the actual abuse that Dazai went through, not being hit or shamed or any of that, but emotional coercion, a slow cultivation of the parts of Dazai that Mori saw as useful, and a creation of the mindset we see Dazai use. This is most prominent with how Mori plants ideas into Dazai’s head. This is referenced in Chapter one of Fifteen as well, establishing that Mori has taken somewhat of an instructor role to Dazai, but that’s something Dazai rebels against.
Tumblr media
This exchange is a perfect example of that conditioning, instead of giving Dazai information directly, Mori gets Dazai to deduce his answers using information he already has, something we see Dazai does very often in the current plot. But the main example of this conditioning comes in the form of Dazai’s plan to use the Sheep against Chuuya, a plan that comes DIRECTLY from Mori.
Tumblr media
Mori makes sure that Dazai is in the room as he baits Chuuya, uses the weakness of the Sheep against him, and then breaks down EXACTLY what has happened for Dazai. “Just some food for thought” my ass.
Tumblr media
Then when discussing his plan with Rimbaud, Dazai brings up a theory taught to him by Mori. 15!Dazai is such a little parrot, it’s all “Mori says, Mori says, Mori says”, just word-vomiting all the thoughts Mori puts in his head, there is a CLEAR influence here.
Tumblr media
Just like Mori, Dazai uses the Sheep against Chuuya. Mori shows Dazai how to control people, how to make them listen and how to make them obey. The reason Dazai treats people like pawns, the reason he KNOWS how to manipulate people is because Mori taught him.
Just like so many of the characters, the fandom forgets that when Mori met Dazai, he was a child. He was a broken child who needed a guiding hand and the hand he got was Mori’s. Morí crafted the Dazai that we see, shaped the way that he thinks, THAT was his abuse.
Chuuya as well is a special case. Like Mori, he is a leader, and that is a quality Mori admires in him. In turn, Chuuya looks up to Mori, sees him as an inspiration for what it means to be a leader. This is another example of Mori’s manipulative abuse. To Chuuya, Mori makes himself out to be a saviour, someone who will teach him how to be better, how to protect the people he thinks he has failed. Mori takes Chuuya at his weakest point and gives him a new chance.
Tumblr media
And with that, Chuuya is loyal to the mafia and Mori has Soukoku. Never mind that Mori was the brains behind Dazai’s plan that got Chuuya into the mafia in the first place, by getting Dazai to do his dirty work, Mori gets to appear to Chuuya with a halo and wings (I could also talk about Mori’s involvement with Stormbringer and how that locked Chuuya into the mafia, but that’s another tangent).
Mori has done the same with Koyo. She’s loyal to him, but clearly does not LIKE him, so where does that loyalty come from? It is because he has freed her. Koyo suffered under the rule of the Old Boss, she had no freedom, the man who cared for her was executed, she was restrained within the mafia. And then Mori takes over and she ends up an executive. Suddenly she’s got POWER, she can change things, under Mori she’s given the ability to change things and take charge. He sees a girl in chains and loosens them, not enough for her to escape, but enough that she can move. And having been chained up for so long, that feels like freedom. Koyo is loyal to Mori because he’s better than the alternative, because if she can’t be free, at least she can move.
I left Yosano for last, because again, she’s a wild card. Unlike all the other people Mori has coerced, Yosano’s abuse took place during a time where every second was precious. There was no time to do it delicately, the way Mori handled everything else, it was war, win or lose. Mori’s tactics were a lot more brutal, Yosano wants the soldiers to live, so Mori shoots the one she cares about so either she WATCHES her friend die, or she can save him. Unlike with Dazai, with Chuuya, with Koyo, Mori isn’t Yosano’s saviour, he’s her captor, he gives her a choice, but its one where neither option is made to look kind. He makes it clear, she heals them, or they die, whether it’s at his hands, or the hands of the enemy, and he knows she would never let them die.
Mori works through coercion and manipulation, he shapes the way people think of him carefully, moulding his appearance in the eyes of others. To Dazai he’s just an old man that Dazai has under his thumb, who tries and fails to manipulate him. But that’s not the truth. To Chuuya he’s a benevolent leader, someone so gracious as to grant him a place in the mafia. But that’s not the truth. To Koyo he’s the safest option, not someone she wants to follow, but someone she will follow, because at least she’s free. But that’s not the truth. To Yosano he’s evil, cruel and harsh and he takes lives as easily as he breathes with no remorse, he’s the God to her Angel of Death. But thats not the truth. To the audience, he’s a monster, a filthy pervert who is nothing more than a pedophile. Is that the truth?
Mori is like a spider, ensnaring people in his web with carefully constructed lies and appearances, his abuse is not physical or sexual, it’s a psychological coercion, careful at times and brutal at others, his abuse is a targeted attack of an individual’s weaknesses, and a cultivation of the parts he sees as useful.
Every person is his tool, and he likes his blades sharp.

I've seen, repeatedly, that every accusation is a confession from the political right and honestly nothing rings more true to that than the claim that university is liberal indoctrination and this is a problem for right wingers for reasons I can't identify when they have the Joshua Generation.
At least libs only indoctrinate adults who are paying thousands of dollars for it instead of literally breeding a billion kids they all homeschool and abuse the fuck out of with the hopes they'll all become Clarence Thomas and fuck America 18 different ways to Sunday. What an odd thing to even bitch about if they're ok with literally doing what they falsely accuse universities of except to literal children from birth to, if they had their way, death while also flailing around about "false accusations" like they aren't throwing them out as fast as they're having kids they force their other kids to raise while treating that abuse like a Funny Little Organization System. Kids are such blessings you know, that's why they don't even bother raising half of them and force their daughters to do all that work for them.
I'm actually surprised I don't see more people who left this lifestyle as adults who were raised into it speaking up about this stuff. There's more of it now, half these things were mentioned in the Shiney Happy People doc and I found out about the Joshua Generation from a podcast called Kitchen Table Cult that is hosted by 2 people who left similar beliefs to the Duggars but I'm honestly surprised it's not like. A huge thing in news everywhere but that's probably because this type of shit isn't even a blip on the map of all the fucked up things the political right does so often it's exhausting to keep up with let alone hold anyone accountable for. Too busy bitching that trans people shit and do so in public bathrooms sometimes. Priorities, you know. Think of the children, but not the ones being bred and abused to further their parents political ends.
#winters ramblings#like BRUH if you want to talk about school and indoctrination clean your OWN mess up before pointing fingers#at least unis are 'blanket training' babies into obedience if you look this up its HORRIFIC child abuse be warned#nor are they irresponsibily having 80 000 children they dont even fucking raise THEMSELVES#while criticising OTHER PEOPLE for habing a bunch of kids!!! like ???!?!#yall motherfuckers will turn women into breeding horses until they DIE or can no longer reproduce and you whine about#PEOPLE OF COLOR who only have like FOUR kids compared to your TWENTY??? okay bud#like yes that last one was a direct duggar callout but they arent alone in these contradictory beliefs that make NO sense#like michelle bitching about trans women taking a piss like shell get raped by her as if she wasnt housing a FUCKINF CHILD MOLESTER#in HER house while blaming the VICTIMS and downplaying their abuse WHAT right does this fuckswizzle have to say SHIT about sex pests#if michelle gave a shit about that she wouldnt be a part of the HORRIFICALLY abusive IBLP so shut your irresponsible child abusing ASS#michelle. and stop calling your kids blessing when you didnt even RAISE most of them your fucking DAUGHTERS did that FOR you#why even HAVE all these kids if THATS what you do to them? shelter them from ANY outside opinion abuse them#force them into your pokitics withthe hopes theyll TAKE OVER THE COUNTRY YOU LIVE IN LMFAO#dont complain about indoctrination when you have MASSIVE swaths of your politicsl party okaying shit like the duggars#or ACTIVELY participating in turning children into politicsl weapons instead of appreciating them as individuals#you know. since theyre allegedly blessings and all that not just convenient and easily controlled political pawns

Jay is the most contradictory motherfucker in that office. People both love and hate him. Love becasue he doesn't make you file as much paperwork. Hate becasue the only way for that to happen is by ignoring everything going wrong and making it Someone Else's Issue. He does next to nothing but never slacks off enough to actually get in trouble and no one knows how the hell he keeps walking that very fine line. Even he doesn't know he he landed a management position but it's probably because the last guy was worse at hiding his incompetence. He doesn't a shit about anything. He cried when the company goldfish died. He's a massive prick. He says he has a wife but no one believes there's anyone on the planet who would tolerate his ass long enough to marry him.

I get really fucking pissed off when christians (I say christians because they're the ones who mostly say it, but this is for any motherfucker) who disrespect other religions. "It's just a joke!!!!" But when WE say something that's even a little contradictory to their religion they'll start fucking whining and bitching like some baby. If you want to disrespect others beliefs, fine, but don't get angry when we disrespect yours.

okay this is something i’ve been thinking about since watching hazbin hotel
tdlr: the four horsemen and its correlation to hell, heaven, and power of overlords.
so, i’ve been doing a lot of research about christianity for a hazbin hotel oc/persona, bc i was *accidently* put into a christian cult/future megachurch as a child and this is what they call healing. as such, i’ve been doing research into the book of revelations vs. the book of ezekiel. SPECIFICALLY the interpretation of the four horsemen of the apocalypse. typically these are interpreted as death/pestilence, war, conquest, and famine. now, there’s two interpretations of the four horsemen. one where its interpreted as the four horsemen being on the ‘good’ side since their released by jesus/lamb of god/lion of judas by unlocking 4/7 seals of the book in gods right hand.
the other, which I interpret more, is the idea that the four horsemen of the apocalypse dont belong to a side. their whole shtick is that they enact chaos and destruction by virtue of gods will in order to prep for the rapture. their very existence is contradictory of each other, to be an enactment of god (which is considered good or holy), yet enacting destruction and chaos.
which brings me to this little thought.
i wondered /what/ gives a sinner power in hell. we’ve seen that deals certainly do something, but it seems as if some demons just spawn in hell with a shit ton of power. at first i thought ‘oh yeah its gotta be dependent on how bad they are or what sins they committed’, but that DOESNT MAKE SENSE. 1) (i only number this and nothing else) alastor is one of the most powerful sinners in the pride ring yet even he has a moral code (re: vizies q+a answer about alastor having similar morals to dexter). And for someone like Valentino, who I would argue as the most ruthless evil motherfucker out there, to have less power than a walking and talking TV, it just doesn’t make sense. Of course- the originals sins we see in Helluva Boss are going to be powerful because they are the original sins, but what about everyone else, about humans.
That’s what the rapture is about, clearing the earth and saving the “good” people, the idea that humanity has become too poisoned and we need to start over (they shit on humanity for 90% of the show, justifiably). But the four horseman represent everything in humanity that remains eerily constant. there was always been war, famine, death/pestilence, and a need to control others (conquest). they are but facets of what already exist. so what if a sinners (previously humans) powers come from their enactment of these principles during their living life. Alastor embodies a lot of famine (cannibalism) and death (serial killer), Vox has a need to control (conquest) others, Carmilla literally runs her entire company based on the fact that people need weapons to fight against angels (war).
and it would make sense why adam, despite being the supreme douche leader that he is, hasn’t been cast out of hell. he does what he does because he believes its a necessarily act, but all it does it scream war and death like a 5 year old on caffeine. the four horsemen do not choose a side, so no matter where their represented, heaven or hell, its still a justifiable fuel for power.
anyways autism speaks and sure is it loud. this is a very whishy washy theory but i think it’s an interesting idea and i am 100% down from criticism from people who understand the bible way more than me.

Sans Undertale.
the funny one. blue guy. skeleton dude. if u please
favorite thing about them: god how to choose. i love how contradictory he is. i love how much he blends into the background and has a net zero relevance on the game's story, and yet he sticks out like a sore thumb, both thematically and tonally. the judgement spiel makes him the direct deliverer of a core game mechanic, and yet he's... such an outsider about it. i love how morally grey he is. a resonance hybrid between a painfully selfless good man and a self serving bastard. he's the depressed nihilistic man. he is his girlfriend's manic pixie dream girl. he is just some guy. he is the last barrier against universal annihilation. he serves cunt (but only once). he parallels flowey in his refusal to engage the narrative, but whereas the narrative starts orbiting flowey instead, sans condems himself as the audience to the player's actions. #finalgirl. also it's still a theory, but if the otherworld stuff is ever confirmed ingame that will make him the most video game character of all fucking time. hands down. no competitors.
least favorite thing about them: every morning i wake up and i stare in the mirror and i ask myself "do i wanna fuck sans undertale??" and i hesitate. and well i could do without that kind of pressure
favorite line: "that's a promise" "besides. chances are... i've already tried to steer you in the right direction. so what can i say? what can i say that will change the mind of a being like you...?"
brOTP: i like whatever he and grillby got going on. that barman/regular comradery, the mood of the bar late at night and being the only client left. the silent vulnerability of it. it's all hypothetical since grillby doesn't really Have much of a presence in the game, but they obviously get along well. alphys too, what a pair of nerds. oh my god i didn't mention papyrus. oh well, they don't feel like a brotp tbh, it's like. they're halves of the same coin. sans inevitably implies papyrus in my mind, and vice versa. do NOT separate them.
OTP: do you have to fucking ask
nOTO: you know people usually put stuff like incest or age gap ships here because they make them understandably uncomfortable, but if there's a ""ship"" that i violently HATE re:sans it's. whenever they make him and toriel a mother-son dynamic. i am not talking about platonic or qpr soriel, i love those as well, they are besties first and lovers maybe, i mean SPECIFICALLY the take that she's his mother. no the fuck she's not. infantilization of sans and mommyification of toriel aside, that's the entire point of their friendship she is NOT his mother. they're on the same level, he is literally the first person she's gone eye to eye with as an equal in her centuries of isolation and THAT is what helps her snap out of her cycle. she is not his superior, he is not her protège. it grosses me out so much.
random headcanon: half decent singer, but hates to sing in public unless he's being a clown on purpose. used to sing papyrus to sleep as a baby. that's a pretty standard hc though, uhhhh.... he hates drinking. though he's surprisingly knowledgeable about corks, for some reason.
unpopular opinion: abby i'm so sorry i know u like it & i 🤝 about it in some cases ex: specific fics we both like, but he does NOT canonically have 1HP outside of a genocide battle. and i'd really appreciate it if people stopped pushing that hc on everyone else.
song i associate with them: Pinch me by the Barenaked Ladies, and If I Ever Feel Better by Phoenix. helplessness but silly and helplessness but funky. v sans songs
favorite picture of them:

I've been smashing that follow button on whichever platform I see you after reading your takedown of TST. Because of that being my first impression of you, I thought something like "huh, that's pretty cool, an actual Satanist calling out the bullshit of the guys that just use the label to be assholes", assuming you (with "satanic" in your handle) derive your own values from a Satanist ethos, surely Laveyan. Then I just read your post on LaVey himself (brilliant as well) and I basically was left with the question of how exactly does satanism look like to you? Clearly it's not a larp, but it's also not the "actual" (or shall I say "Main-Stream") brand of it, the goal of which as I've come to understand it being basically to become a Bad Motherfucker.
I haven't looked if you've actually written something about that, do let me know if you have. Went for an Ask so I can let you know I am a big fan 😁
Spite and self-worship are probably always going to be some of the root animating forces of anyone's conception of satanism, and that's true for ours too. In our case, that's not just spite against White Christian Morality, but also spite against TST for being Scientology for mall goths, and spite against COS for both its historical chumminess and outright endorsement of reactionary tendencies, and also for its intellectually bankrupt charade that the adulation of power for its own sake should somehow be considered "apolitical." TST and COS are both just competing for hegemony on a smaller scale, both of them are perfectly sincere and legitimate expressions of satanism (and we mean that as an insult to satanism) - and we spite them both for being deliberately, institutionally unable to address any of the myriad crises facing the world today, and particularly the crises faced by the people most immediately and constantly threatened by the Christian nationalists for whom satanism ostensibly exists to confront and depower.
As to the self-worship part? For us, this isn't actually terribly difficult to reconcile with our unabashedly leftist positions on the world. No one is an island. My ability to become my best self is contingent, at least in part, on the society in which I live, and the material conditions that exist therein. Your mileage may vary of course, but I don't think it's contradictory at all to say that in the pursuit of my self-interest and my own apotheosis, my satanism obliges me from time to time to also pursue the ascendance and wellbeing of the people around me. There is just no good reason that my wellbeing and that of others inherently have to be in competition with each other, and I think it's great to be self-indulgent enough to reject that as a false dichotomy, and to pursue both as its own form of self-worship.
I think a big part of what it means to be a satanist in this light is to be critical, often to the point of hostility, to the arrangement of the world as it is today. The powers that be put incredible amounts of energy not just into committing atrocities, but also in conditioning the rest of us that these atrocities are justified in the pursuit of profit, efficiency, the so-called right of states to exist, whatever. We are conditioned to never be so audacious as to expect these atrocities not to occur in the first place, and that we should accept atrocities as the background noise of regular life lest we be doing "purity politics" by demanding better. But this is just a modernized divine right of kings - at the end of the day, it is a deliberate project to stunt the political imaginations of billions of people into thinking that There Is No Alternative even as the oceans boil. And that is a project that we should not only reject as satanists, but whose mechanisms and reproduction we should actively sabotage, at the very least, as an expression of self-defense.
To quote the late Michael Brooks - "Be kind to people, and ruthless to systems." That's a better summation of what our satanism means than anything LaVey ever said.

javert is WRONG: the thesis of les mis is that legality and morality aren't synonymous!
i just found the internet's most unbelieveably dogshit hottake that makes anything woobifying javert written by Die Girlies Auf Tumblr Und Twitter galaxy brained in comparison. rest is below a cut because i got Wordy in my goal of ripping this motherfucker a new one.
Tumblr media
The point about “fault” is very important here. Following Rousseau, Hugo believes that the poor become criminals out of necessity. They “fall” (i.e., become poor) and then become morally “degraded.” Therefore, our response to crime should be “charity,” not punishment. This is a classic Romantic view that became the basis for modern liberalism. According to Rousseau, people are basically good and are corrupted by society, committing crime only out of ignorance and desperation; the solution to crime, then, is education and welfare. Christians obviously worry that this view has no place for the doctrine of original sin, and conservatives object to this view because it leaves out personal responsibility for crime.
i know this is a christian publication but the concept of original sin even factoring into criminality and criminal justice genuinely pisses me off. stop forcing your shitty worldview that everyone is popped outta the womb an evil sinner, i beg. the seperation of church and state is a vital part of democracy. also, you can believe people are shaped by society and driven to crime through desperation without taking away personal agency. those two things are not contradictory.
If I am right about the Rousseau subtext, then Javert is not necessarily a villain; he’s just a conservative, albeit a liberal caricature of a conservative. There are two good examples of a liberal bias in Les Mis. First, notice that Valjean’s position in his society is roughly analogous to an illegal immigrant in our society. When he leaves the prison, Valjean can’t get work because he doesn’t have the right papers. He’s an undocumented worker. In a scene from the musical cut from the film, a farmer allows Valjean to work for him, but then only pays him half as much as the other laborers. The farmer reasons, “You broke the law….Why should you get the same as honest men?”
i've never seen anyone, even javert fans, try and argue he isn't a villain. this is breaking new ground here, folks. it's a hell of an assertion, but it's demonstrably false. jean valjean is the main character. we root for him and wish to see him succeed. javert is hunting him for the entire narrative. thus, he is the antagonist. there may be some moral ambiguity on both their parts, but he structurally is the villain and that is a narrative fact.
next, as an american i am fucking BEGGING on my HANDS and KNEES for other americans to learn about the differing political terms for different countries and times if they are speaking about them with any supposed credibility. i'm not asking you to memorize every country's parties and political intricacies, but at least acknowledge that even if there is some overlap between 21st century american conservatism and 19th century french politics, that there is no one-to-one analogy!! modern american christian conservatism is a consequence of hundreds of years of unique geopolitics and religion stewing together, and you can say similar things about french politics of the time! you CANNOT just say shit like "javert is a liberal caricature of a conservative" without sounding like an utter clown because hugo was not an american liberal and javert is not an american conservative. now, if you were to alter your language a bit and say something like "javert is a leftist caricature of an arch-conservative," you'd sound less foolish (hugo's politics are hard to pin down but leftist is i believe the best label for him at the time of LM's publication. and to my understanding javert isn't really a fervent arch-conservative but it is at least a plausible reading bc he's a traditionalist, deeply religious cop and 19th century french arch-conservativism actually existed in 19th century france (shocker, i know!)). but that change in language would require actual intellect and effort to learn about other times, places, and worldviews on the part of the author, and judging by his ignorant politics, something tells me he's lacking that!
then there's the bit about illegal immigration. hoo BOY is this fucking stupid. jean valjean is a white, culturally catholic, working class french male citizen. he's an everyman of the time, his name and story of class struggle couldn't be more generic unless he was named john doe or jean dupont (the french equivalent) from nowheresville, france. hugo had a point here, and that is that as a member of the wretched poor, les misérables, valjean, representing a large swath of the french populace, is so removed from education and self reflection and truly living life that he's more akin to an animal or an object, that he's so beat down by the daily grind that he verges on inhuman. this is only magnified by his time in toulon. i'll stop there, but it is very important in jean valjean's story that he's impoverished, yes, but a french citizen. he is as french as the king, but treated like dirt because of his social status and criminal record. this sets up a dichotomy in the france of 1832 between the wretched poor and those with privilege, which is an important part of the novel.
the issue of "illegal immigration" both in france and america is a modern one. there was still bigotry and xenophobia, obviously, but the discourse around the intersections of border control, the nation state, and citizenship is a very modern one. to say "valjean's position in his society is roughly analogous to an illegal immigrant in our society" is ignorant. yes, both jean valjean and many undocumented immigrants are faced with similar abuses, but that does not mean it's intended by hugo to be a reading of the text or political commentary because let me restate this: 21ST CENTURY AMERICAN POLITICS DIDN'T EXIST IN 19TH CENTURY FRANCE!
also, valjean is the opposite of undocumented. he has his yellow papers, which are quite literally documents that are the root cause of the daily discrimination he faces, hence why him ripping them up is a radical act of freeing himself from the control of an unjust state. i don't even know how you miss this, it's stressed in the movie musical multiple times.
“Men like you can never change,” he tells Valjean. But Javert is not simply being prejudiced here. He knows from his own experience that it is possible for the poor to pull themselves up by their bootstraps. Javert, too, was born in poverty. He is “from the gutter,” as he puts it, but he embraced law and made something of himself.
oh, of course the bootstraps ideology rears its ugly head. not even gonna waste my breath on this one other than to call it stupid and wrong. all javert made himself was a class traitor and a bootlicker, and that's honestly tragic.
Consider a second example of liberal bias. The character of Fantine is designed to elicit the viewer’s sympathy for “welfare mothers.” Fantine, a young, unwed mother in Valjean’s factory, faces persecution from her coworkers. The factory foreman expresses a conservative attitude toward charity: “At the end of the day, you get nothing for nothing.”
this part. this part was so unbelievably cruel and so far removed from the empathy that this narrative bleeds that i had to step back from writing this and take a smoke break. firstly, fantine is NOT a stand in for "welfare mothers", which is, once again, a modern conservative strawman! the welfare state did not exist in 19th century france. there was little to no support for mothers in fantine's position, and to my knowledge, none stemming from the state. hugo was writing her character to bring to light the unfairness of her position. she had a lover who left her flat out, with a child to care for and no financial support. she was ostracized, eventually fired, and resorted to survival sex work.
Fantine shouldn’t expect special treatment, but rather should take responsibility for the consequences of her own sexual license.
fuck you, john. where in the text did she ask for "special treatment". where in the text did she do ANYTHING but take responsibility for her child. she sold her hair. she sold her teeth. she sold her body. she got sick because of her living conditions. she died. all out of love for her child. also, framing children as "a consequence" is disgusting, and you should be ashamed of yourself and reflect on why you think that's an alright way to view a living, breathing, human being. if you don't wanna take my word for it, psalm 127:3 clearly states "children are a gift from the lord; they are a reward from him," so your stance is decidedly unbiblical. children aren't punishment.
Likewise, when Fantine turns to prostitution to feed her child, Javert is unmoved by excuses. Valjean’s family was starving, and Fantine’s daughter was sick, but these facts don’t excuse them for breaking the law. Theft and prostitution are wrong, and it is Javert’s duty as police officer to arrest them.
how is theft to feed a starving child immoral. how is sex work to ensure your child lives immoral. give me ONE reason aside from your and javert's religious worldviews that either of those things is wrong. "but the bread didn't belong to valjean!" and would inaction, watching his nephew die simply because a windowpane and empty pockets separated him from a piece of bread be more moral? is watching a child die when you believe you can save them the better option? the whole point of this damn book is that legality is NOT synonymous with morality. javert may have the legal high ground, but he does NOT have the moral high ground, and when he realizes this, the thesis of the book, he fucking kills himself! for an example outside the text to perhaps get it through your thick skull: slavery was legal. biblical, even! does that mean it's morally right? no!
Thus Les Mis is designed to get us to see Javert’s conservatism as cruel and to elicit sympathy for Hugo’s liberal social policies. It should be noted, however, that Les Mis is a caricature of the conservative position. Conservatives agree that we ought to treat the poor with dignity and compassion. They think that compassion programs, however, should be administered by the church instead of the state, and they think true dignity requires personal responsibility and submission to the law.
how can javert both be an exaggerated, cruel conservative caricature and be right? i'd argue he's both an accurate portrayal of the inherent cruelty and misanthropy present in the politics of the political right, and that he's decidedly wrong as proven in the text. jean valjean is a good man, despite it all, but javert couldn't see that because of his worldview and chose to relentlessly hound him until he finally realized his mistake, a realization that overcame him so strongly that his only solution in his mind was to kill himself!
and do conservatives actually agree they should treat the poor with dignity and respect? it's in the bible, sure, which christian conservatives hold as the absolute truth, but in this very article you, a christian conservative, have expressed nothing but contempt and cruelty for undocumented immigrants, for unwed mothers, for thieves and sex workers. for les misérables - the wretched poor. and why shouldn't the state handle "compassion programs" as you call them? the gov't is electable and manageable (in theory), unlike the beast of untraceable wealth and power that is the church. we don't live in a theocracy, so the only reliable way to ensure people get the help they deserve is through the state, which can actually be held accountable for these expectations (again, in theory). that's more than you can say for the church.
The fact that Les Mis contradicts evangelical theology does not mean apologists shouldn’t use it—on the contrary. We can help non-Christian fans of the musical see how the vision that draws them toward the story can only be fulfilled in Christ.
his conculsion is LAUGHABLE. personally, the "vision that drew me to the story" at age twelve was my attraction to men. i'm a flaming homosexual, you see, and a transgender one at that. the overwhelming majority of musical theater fans i've encountered are some variety of queer. at age 22, ten years later, i'm drawn to the story still partially because i find these characters attractive and magnetic, but much more so for the literary and socialist political value i find in the narrative. i'm an unrepentant leftist as well, as are literally every other les mis fan i've ever met (besides yourself, of course). i've found more fulfillment through reading les misérables than i have in my exploration of the new testament, and i'm not even done with the book yet!
i don't really know how to conclude this other to point and laugh at john and his publictaion, because somehow i stumbled upon a conservative fan of les mis and the lack of self awareness is more baffling than i could have ever imagined it being

i love morally gray langue de chat okay hear me out. (ramble incoming)
ive been talking about how contradictory this event was FOREVER and like at first i was just like Man this is bad writing but now im . I still think the same thing i doubt they were trying to make langue this way but i think they should be a little fucked up as a treat
remember how they used some of rogueforts earlier crimes to prove they hadnt stolen the statue?
but then they said this?
Tumblr media
i dont know Perhaps im just an idiot and my only knowledge of law is ace attorney but that doesnt add up to me. How were they going to prove roguefort innocent of every crime they were being charged for when they presented some of their crimes as evidence??? also how was that morally correct, arguing someone you know is a criminal is innocent? and like. This wasnt them just them saying theyd lower rogueforts sentence. if they were to prove roguefort innocent of a SINGLE crime (the statue) how would that do anything to their 200 million year sentence??? theyd still be in jail for the rest of their life lol. it didnt really matter in the end because roguefort just up and dipped but that doesnt change how odd it all was
so no. langue de chat didnt just want to defend roguefort for the statue incident - they were planning on defending everything.
and as i mentioned before, they already used some of rogueforts crimes AS EVIDENCE. theyd probably have to do a bit of silly word tricks (lying) to make that seem possible !!!
mwa i love you langue de chat please keep defending criminals and lying in court i love you.
Tumblr media
this one scene where they say theyre not gonna resort to bribes and say theyre gonna be righteous and shit kind of Fucks everything up but. yknow. i like to imagine they just want to rely on their argument skills - they dont want to bribe people, thats cheating. Lying though? Thats a skill. thats impressive. anyone can bribe, but only a skilled lawyer would be able to lie in court and get away with it . a very not-so-righteous lawyer.
Tumblr media
in my brain they simply take cases that would make them the most popular. Like
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and then devsister fucks up my headcanon again. Sigh . i guess they just draw the line somewhere idk. Look again they were trying to say that rogue was completely innocent so they DO defend criminals
Tumblr media
This is the only line even HINTING at them actually caring about if their clients are truly innocent or not though. all they talk about is wanting to be Popular and wanting to be The Best (which would come with being popular). they want to be famous thats their whole motive i love you you little motherfucker im gonna shove them down an elevator shaft (affectionate). By contrast there are so many lines from cappuccino talking about justice (though to be fair his morals are also clearly a little fucked. that sentence she gave roguefort????)
i also like how this hc contrasts with cappuccino,,, cappu will put Anyone in jail (probably. we've only ever seen her with roguefort) meanwhile langue will keep anyone out of jail if they think itll boost their reputation
of course none of this is canon, i doubt devsisters intentionally wrote them like this (esp since theyre supposed to be righteous) and also this could all be explained with The cookie run legal system is Super Duper Fucked Up. which is still true because of the ridiculous sentence cappu gave and how he was just allowed to add to it for something that wasnt even morally wrong let alone illegal of roguefort but . i just think its neat. morally gray langue is real To Me

Okay okay okay okay
Brother Wilf
This part of CoRA takes place in the midst of this summary post
Basically after Link, Marla and Tonbo get through Labrynna and part ways with my beloved Sturmaz I found a sketch of this motherfucker in one of the early concept versions of CoRA and knew I had to fit him in somewhere, so when Link's party is heading into Holodrum they meet this traveling warrior monk whose basic purpose in the story is to set Link off balance
Tumblr media
Generally by being even more of an extremist religious figure than Astramorus.
And thus far, that's Brother Wilf! Aside from making him a Zora, he's pretty much unchanged from the basic concept sketch even though the original version of the character was created for one of the versions of CoRA that would have had the serial numbers filed off.
Link doesn't like him but I love him because I think he's conceptually fantastic.
Blind, Brother Wilf uses sonar to find his way through the world, because obviously it's my fic and I can decide that Zora can do that if I so please. He sort of represents where some of TotK's worldbuilding is bleeding into CoRA's a touch (but not in a way I found especially contradictory to what I was already doing) because he's from the equivalent Depths of a country from another continent and doesn't have a lot of interest in coming up to the surface when they run into him in Subrosia.
Brother Wilf is not especially reasonable about things he regards as demonic. This is a problem when Link runs into a minor demon who literally just wants to be left alone to nap.
It is less of a problem when the party runs into a much less minor demon in Subrosia and Brother Wilf happens to show up.
That said the "much less minor demon" is probably less the antagonist of the Subrosia mini-storyline than Brother Wilf himself is, sort of as a build up towards Astramorus confronting Link in Termina.
I think that's the majority of the big points and I have to get to bed so I'mma wrap it here lol

HiruSena TATTOO AU, with Hiruma as the tattoo artist, and Sena as his new (lowkey horny) client.
Tumblr media
Sena loses in a game of truth or dare, and as a result, he gets dared by Monta and Suzuna to get either a womb tattoo, or a tramp stamp.
A “tramp stamp” is a tattoo on the lower back, just a bit above the butt. A “womb tattoo,” on the other hand, is placed on the front, on the area below a person’s belly button (aka the womb).
Sena chooses the womb tattoo, only because he doesn’t want a needle pounding on his spine.
Sena, of course, is allowed to choose the tattoo he wants. So he searches on Instagram and finds a tattoo artist whose work he really likes. A guy with the name of Hiruma Youichi.
Hiruma’s artworks all seem to be related to demons and devils. If you want the “Fallen Angel” by Alexandre Cabanel permanently inked on you, then Hiruma’s your guy.
(Pic of “Fallen Angel” painting below.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hiruma, being an expert in advertising his works, posts his portfolio on different social media platforms, including Instagram. He posts a lot of reels of his inked pieces, but he never shows his face on his social media.
All Sena sees, when he scrolls through Hiruma’s instagram portfolio, are snippets of the artist here and there. A face hidden behind a medical facemask, sometimes colored black, and sometimes red. Blond hair, gelled into spikes. A heavily-pierced ear, adorned with glittering ornaments. Mainly, the camera is always focused on the clients’ newly-inked skin.
Hiruma does different styles. He can do realism, he can recreate Renaissance artworks, he can make silly cartoon demons, and he can even ink devil wings on his clients’ backs.
However, Sena scrolls past all those artworks, until he finds the one he likes. It’s a simple design, and it doesn’t seem to be Hiruma’s more famous artworks, judging by the lack of it on his Instagram page.
It’s a non-minimal tattoo, of six inches. It’s one of Hiruma’s original artworks: a Succubus tattoo. It’s a heart with devil horns and wings. The design is simple, but Sena falls in love with the artwork on sight.
(For reference, the tattoo looks like this:)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So Sena goes to Hiruma’s website and schedules an appointment. He’s very impressed with how methodical the procedure all seems to be.
After scheduling the appointment, Sena does a lot of research. He watches Youtube videos on interviews with tattoo artists, he reads articles on the Do’s and Don’ts when getting a tattoo, he takes note of tattoo aftercare, and how to prepare prior to the appointment.
What confuses Sena is that there are a lot of contradictory information. So he just goes to his trusted online store and, like a dumbass, only relies on the product information, without further researching what he’s buying.
So when he walks into Hiruma’s studio on the day of the appointment, Hiruma stares at Sena’s abdomen, which is covered in plastic wrap.
“Oi,” Hiruma says, “What brand of numbing cream did you use, motherfucker?”
“Ah,” Sena says, looking in his bag. He takes out a tiny box and hands it to Hiruma. “It’s this one.”
Hiruma takes one look at the brand and throws the box into the garbage.
Sena’s jaw drops. “Wha... Why?!”
Hiruma massages his temples. “Are you an idiot? This brand is fucking illegal!” And he taps away into his Ipad, showing Sena the screen. One simple google search is all it takes to find that yes, the cream Sena used is apparently banned.
“Ah,” Sena says again, at a loss for words. “I... uh... didn’t know, I guess.”
“No shit, Sherlock,” Hiruma replies, busy again with his iPad. “I’m rescheduling this appointment. You look like you’re allergic to that cuntass cream.”
Sena blinks in surprise. “I am?”
Hiruma, unimpressed, gestures to the pinkish patch of skin on Sena’s abdomen. “Was that area of skin pink before you put that fucking cream, or afterwards?”
Sena laughs awkwardly. “Um... after.” Then, at Hiruma’s sigh, Sena hastens to add, “But, the cream works, though! It feels numb!”
“Christ alive,” Hiruma mutters. Then a little louder, he says, “That fucking cream can cause stroke and cardiac arrest!”
“Oh...” Sena says. “Um... Guess I’ll die, then?”
At that, Hiruma laughs. It’s a sharp sound, startling Sena into staring at Hiruma. But hot damn, the sound is so jubilant and so nice, that warmth blooms in Sena’s stomach.
“Huh? What was that just now?” Sena thinks to himself. Then, he waves the thought away. “Maybe side effects of the numbing cream.”
“Perish, motherfucker,” Hiruma starts waving Sena out the door. “But don’t die in my studio, goddamn you! Bring your dumb ass back here in two days, when the cream’s worn off. Now scram.” And yet, even as his words are callous, it sounds as if he’s smiling from behind his medical facemask.
Sena leaves, but he can’t quite forget Hiruma’s resounding laugh. Or the sound of Hiruma’s voice even as he utters profanities.
Tumblr media
Sena returns for his appointment, this time without any damn numbing cream.
And the procedure goes as planned. Except, both Hiruma and Sena are feeling things.
Hiruma is trying very much not to stare at Sena’s tiny waist. If Hiruma were to wrap his hands around it, the pads of his fingers would touch. And as if that weren’t embarrassing enough for Hiruma, he can’t help noticing that Sena’s waist is also toned. Which Hiruma finds very hot. Ah, FUCK.
Sena, on the other hand, isn’t doing much better. Imagine the intimacy of getting a womb tattoo, but like amped up to a thousand bcs Sena’s hand kink is making itself known like a bat screeching out of hell.
Hiruma’s fingers are long, and Sena is trying not to ogle the veins on Hiruma’s hands like a creep.
Not even black rubber gloves can hide how deliciously spindly Hiruma’s fingers are. At the very least, it covers Hiruma’s long fingernails, which are painted black. Sena could not help simping for that. Damn it, Sena’s hand kink is absolutely raging today.
Hiruma’s inappropriate thoughts dissipate, as his mind is taken up by his current project. He puts his wholeass Hirussy into every artwork he makes, and this is no different. Thus, he concentrates on inking the stenciled skin.
Sena on the other hand, feels absolutely flustered getting touched, even as Hiruma’s and Sena’s skin are separated by Hiruma’s rubber gloves.
The amount of fucking pain hammering at Sena’s abdomen is at least a good distraction. And yet, all Sena’s inappropriate thoughts return, with how careful Hiruma acts whenever he wipes the blood off Sena’s skin.
“AAAAAAAAA, THIS HURTS!” Sena thinks. But also, his inner horny self whispers, “Nnghhh, hands.”
It also does not help that Hiruma is wearing a tight shirt, the sleeves doing nothing to hide his muscular arms.
Between Hiruma’s attractiveness and the pain, Sena’s thoughts are just a hazy blur of non-stop screaming.
Tumblr media
yes, y’all can definitely use this prompt!!! This AU of mine was cross-posted from the HiruSena/SenaHiru Discord Chat. Join us there!

You expected an ask about Gehrman... but it was me, an ask about Maria, 002!
Not everyday I get to talk about her in length, yeah x)
(Asks from this ( x ) meme)
002 | Give me a character & I will tell you
How I feel about this character:
I really like her, she is the kind of strong female characters that I appreciate; who can and will kick the ass of the scariest motherfucker in the setting (or at least try to) and shows stoicism and is so strong and noble, but have not lost touch with their gentle, emotional, compassionate and vulnerable side. I dislike the idea that strong = suppressing and weeding out the more tender side of herself.
These are LAYERS of the character, some even contradictory at the first glance. She can't be described with one sentence unless you make that sentence really darn long and fractured, because if you focus on one side of her you'll miss another that is just as crucial. She also rejected the cursed, questionable blood antics of her ancestry and turned onto being more regular hunter of Gehrman's type... and then rejected that too, seeing what she's became, and discarded her weapon! She strikes me as a person that really doesn't want to fight and kill deep down, but whose morals are just too strong to NOT stand up and fight for humanity; that was her initial intention, and that's what so hurtful about her fate.
All the people I ship romantically with this character:
Adeline or Rom - they both happen to be her 'type' of a woman, and ironically both tragically yeet into the next plane because they consider that sweet Insight better than whatever worth they have as humans ;-; I just imagine dynamic being a bit similar, only Rom is kind of bad with subordination and doesn't see Maria as someone 'above' (in status or self-esteem vice); meanwhile, Adeline has more shared interests with Maria and in the contrast of Rom being too deep in her thoughts would be more attentive (like bringing her tea, helping her to carry things despite Maria not needing any help, all that).
Brador - somewhere on the outskirts because it seems like they only have true chance in the Nightmare, but they're their worst selves in there (Maria is back to being a hunter, for one)... so yeah, it is either be bi do crimes together, OR better reserved for an AU!
Gehrman - I don't know about this one because even though within my interpretations they're basically Valtr x Yamamura but straight, this ship is just really hard to communicate because people will assume too many things about the characters. With everything I know, the Doll's appear means either that 1) Gehrman knew Maria better than anyone else in the whole setting, including the side of her that no one else saw or 2) Gehrman didn't understand her at all but is aware he might have RUINED her innocent side by training her to be ruthless killer too much. I lean towards 2 more, so it is a one-sided "ship", but 1 is basically a goldmine of emotions and ideas and I support that too!
Ludwig - they're both noble, knightly warriors with good intentions and eager to fight for humanity that did lead to their downfall in the end... Ludwig, however, falls for the same issue as Adeline and Rom; he is just too attached to something otherworldly to find a deep connection with a fellow human being, unless they worship the same god I guess? And that's Laurence -_- And the two don't even have a chance to find connection within Nightmare, because Ludwig is quite further from humanity there than Maria, Brador or Adeline!
Tumblr media
My non-romantic OTP for this character:
hhhh Again, all of the above could qualify for this one too! But to not self-repeat, I'd say Crow of Cainhurst and Maria! Not to say I can't see the potential of a ship between them, but I am personally way more enthusiastic about them being basically like siblings since childhood! Just, being rather close, even though they'd have banters often and Maria would have to pull his hair for being a lil' dickhead to their more easily-scared and sensitive friends! Crow always been a little shit xD I think he also was very jealous and pouted for weeks after Maria left Cainhurst.
My unpopular opinion about this character:
I believe that Maria [REDACTED] herself rather than was killed by Simon or something, but regardless, what we know before that was that she abandoned the hunt (discarded her weapon) upon guilt and regrets from participating in Fishing Hamlet's massacre, and resigned to being a caretaker for the patients. So, for that reason I feel like identifying her character with being super mean murderous super dangerous killing machine that likes blood and shredding and stabbing and killing and blood and killing and murdering and....... you get the point. I feel like it is tone-deaf to connect her character to THE thing she renounced in her character arc and that she regrets becoming. Acknowledging she is very strong and dangerous warrior =/= identifying her character as just that.
I try to shrug it off though because again, that character arc happened behind the scenes, and what we MEET in the game is a snapshot of Maria at her prime as a hunter. Not only most fans do not loredig far and interact on more casual level, but also duckling effect can be quite strong. Like, who will win: the arguably coolest battle in the whole game or a description of a weapon many players can't even get because of the stupid Shark Giants? You see what I mean!
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon:
I wish we got to see something of her in Cainhurst, like portrait, or finding an item that belonged to her... Something to help to resolve the timeline confusions of how long ago she left, what was her drip before Knights, just... just one little bit. But we won't get shit because that's infamous nebulous storytelling of FromSoft for ya. x)
my OTP:
I don't think I physically can choose between Mariadeline and Gehrmaria, I am skipping the move, sorry hsdfhds
my cross over ship:
Tumblr media
I do not have a ship, but back when I discussed crossover between FMA (03 version) and BB, she did kick Tucker's ass, hope this helps
a headcanon fact:
I do not quite see Maria and Doll as separate characters! Maybe after you release soul of Maria from Hell, Doll has a chance to develop and regain her humanity, but my default status for the two is 'when one of them is asleep - another is awake, and vice-versa'. Both of them are basically effected version of the same person with missing memories except for very selective thing (with Doll it is to care about people, with Maria it is to no longer let the hunters torment the corpse of a dead sea mom). Both things that were Maria's strongest emotional anchors before death. But yeah, I think they do share the soul.
