the string of events that led me to watch dune 2 in theaters is something... and sent me into the rabbit hole that is only possible when you watch something that is 'good' but not 'great' and which doesn't seem interested to grapple with its own themes.

#anyway what i've been writing for dune will remain anon until i finish crossed blades because i don't want a repeat of my last succ fic #i will say tho that what i like about dune is the same thing i like about succ: family as a tool of empire #plus there are some interesting parallels to be made between the rancid misogyny of the empire and the more egalitarian fremen #i love that scene where paul says he'd 'very much want to be equal' to chani and then well... there's the whole ending scene... #chilling depiction of heterosexuality i don't think i've seen such a scathing portrayal of cishet relationships under patriarchy #in such a mainstream movie at least (this is coincidentally the theme i think the movie doesn't grapple well with it's just there #the eugenics of empire are never allowed to become a full source of horror) #the way this reverberates through the genuine tenderness between feyd and paul as they are literally fighting to the death is v moving tho #i have to write something for irulan and chani there's a lot of potential there: the white woman who benefits from empire #(very directly being the emperor's daughter but who is reduced to breeding cattle + war prize by the misogyny of the empire) #and the black woman who is directly victimized by empire but is liberated in her struggle against it

God the horror genre. Is so many things. 

#AUGHh its so frusterating cuz like i feel like horror has such a potential as a genre to be worked into one that highlights opression #instead of feeding into it and there are def horror movies coming out and that have come out that tackle their themes in a way that works #not to endorse the fear of outsiders or the unknown but instead the fear of what is very well known but often ignored #but like ok so slashers right? I love a good slasher n the genre has so many really good movies but then you get movies like sleepaway camp #which are just. SO entrenched in transmisogynist ideas and queerphobia that its just like. yikes. #and then you have books like dracula and cosmic horror stuff by lovecraft and both the book and that author in speciifc feed into horror as #a genre of hatred where the 'unknown' is whats to be feard and the fear of the unknown too quickly leads into the fear of queerness or #different cultures or races #into bigotry #like i know dracula is big but as someone who read the book and wrote an essay on it. it is so important to acknowledge the copious amounts #of bigotry and misogyny and hatred that stoker wrote into that novel #ITS JUST god i love horror so much but there are just. some films that will never appeal to me cuz i just cant get over the hurdles of #intense hatred #like i could watch all of Halloween because of the amount of ableism like #also to be clear: it was a blind watch my parents are both pastors lol they werent sitting me down to watch slashers in my infancy and ive #only recently started going through and watching a lot of the 'classic' horror films #its fun! ive been having fun most have dated moments but god the first halloween film was rough #still wondering how that kid from middle school who's parents hated gay people and were like conservative catholics were chill with their #like 12 year old son watching a bunch of horror movies #n i couldnt even get my hands on one if i wanted to

October this year has felt kind of vague and adrift for me, no real festive spirit to speak of--or at least nowhere near how last year felt, when it was Year of the Vampire and all.

BUT I am remedying that now with a combined pincer attack of 1) relistening to Night Vale from the beginning on my commute to work and 2) rereading Warm Bodies on my breaks/in my spare time. Things are getting increasingly spooky up in here

#consider this a heartfelt rec for both of the series mentioned #for anyone who might not know: Welcome to Night Vale is a fiction podcast in the form of a community radio show #the host of the show gives news and commentary on the happenings in a small desert town #... a small town that's regularly besieged by cosmic horrors and shadowy government agencies and various other monsters and phenomena #it's extremely chill and relaxing! which is funny to say because it sounds like a joke but it's actually true. #the residents of the town are used to all of this strangeness so it's described in the same tone as the results of the schoolboard election #seriously even ten years later this podcast has me giggling like a maniac every few minutes #it's very funny and heartfelt despite ostensibly being horror themed #and as for the other series--Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion is SUUUUCH an underrated book series #the tl;dr is it's a zombie-human love story #there was a movie based on the first book several years back and it was pretty good imo #it plays up the romcom aspect a lot. which is fair but not EXACTLY accurate to the book. as you might imagine lol #the actual book though??? god I'm only two chapters in on my re-read and I had underestimated how much I love the way this protag thinks #it is HEAVY on philosophical discussion and even digs into some societal/political issues later on #and the supernatural/sci-fi worldbuilding is so incredible that tbh I can barely take any other type of zombies seriously after reading thi #it's just. it's good. check it out if you're not afraid of a little gore in your star-crossed romance #(I'd say more but I don't want to spoil the end of the first book! it's a fairly predictable twist but it still feels so good)

last night was the most fun I've had at work in months!

it was myself and a bunch of my favorite coworkers/managers doing an overnight to get my section ready for fall stuff. we bought pizza and arizona tea and ... genuinely just had a blast working together after hours.

it's hard to articulate, but if most every day was like that at work I'd not be constantly burnt out
