12. Will you change anything about the way you edit or rewrite this year?

Not too much, but I'll be paying more attention to varying sentence length to make my writing more fresh and vibrant. This post made me think about it more than I have, and it's a great example of how to do it, too! The way that writing sounds to the ear is so important, and I'm always looking for ways to improve.

20. Any plans to work on original fiction this year?

I wish I could say yes! For now, I'm satisfied with writing fanfic (especially since I recently became obsessed with Zukaang lol). I feel like I'm still developing my writing and storybuilding skills and figuring out what story (if any) I would like to tell outside of fanfic.

Ah, my 'having fun' idea!

I love vampires and I don’t get to write them enough - plus Mai really screams vampire with her aesthetic.

It’s going to be shipping maiko (obvs) and will feature vampire!Mai who has a new target catching her eye... and she can never resist a pursuit. However, there might be a bit of a twist with this pursuit.

I have no idea if I’ll get it done for Mai Week (since it’s the third level of priority right now) but it’s hopefully going to be a lot of fun to write and read!

For a snippet, you can have the only sentences of the actual fic I've written so far:

“You’re looking at him again.” Mai blinks and refocuses on Ty Lee in front of her. Refocuses because yes, again, she wasn’t actually looking at her friend. Or the boba in her hand. Or even just the world outside of the window. Still: “No, I wasn’t.” Ty Lee gives her a disbelieving look that says I just watched you. Mai ignores it.

Oooh! Good one!

My first reaction was, understandably, a fic involving firebending or the Fire Nation. As my mind wandered and played with the words, I then thought of examining Aang, Katara, and Sokka's feelings on the destruction wrought upon both of their cultures and how

But then I realized a key element: MY ashes, my worth. This fic should therefore be about an individual, and naturally there was one individual who I gravitated to first.

Cremation is one of the ways in which Tibetan Buddhists handle their dead (the other is sky burial). I would write Aang's funeral (which I plan to someday for my AU, which I am not looking forward to 😭) in a separate oneshot, original show canon compliant only. As the events of the funeral take place, I would use it to reflect on the grief of not only the attendants but the rest of the world as well. The world went 100 years without its avatar, and now he is gone again.

Aang would live a long life, and thus outlive some of those he knew. The survivors from the show would each get a moment in the spotlight, showcasing their grief and their memories of Aang. Katara remains strong, only weeping in private. She has to for the sake of her children and grandchildren. She and his remaining friends find comfort in each other’s arms. Perhaps some time has passed since some of them saw each other last. Funerals have a way of bringing people together, after all.

Hit hardest of all, I think, would be the new Air Nomads. Hailing from each other nations, they followed Aang as his disciples, learning the ways of the old Air Nomads and becoming the new Nomads. Now, their mentor and leader is gone. The person they devoted their lives to is gone. Having Katara and Aang's biological family helps them to cope, but they are brought to their knees by sorrow. "How can we go on without him?" they cry. Then, one of the new Nomads, young but wise beyond her years, comforted and counseled by Katara, rises to her feet and reminds her fellow Nomads that they did not devote their lives to one man, but to his teachings. Aang was more than just one person, and he understood that. He taught them humility, compassion for all life, and acceptance for the impermanence of life. One life is ended, but his legacy is not. They, his students, are his legacy, and the burdens of maintaining his nation has fallen on their shoulders. This gives them hope, a thing Aang gave in life and in death.

Aang is a phoenix in more than one way, more so than Ozai ever was. He has died, but the next stage of the Avatar Cycle has begun. His body has been cremated and his ashes scattered over the Patola Mountains, but in the land where he lived, now touched by his ashes, the Air Nomads have been born anew. If one wants to understand the worth of Avatar Aang's life, all they need do is find an Air Nomad on their journeys and they will find it.

Toph is a character that gets a special place in my heart just cus I know she would’ve been an all-timer if I had watched atla as a kid. I didn’t, but seeing her in action makes the 8 year old that lives in my soul very happy. It makes me sad when people say she didn’t have an arc or that she’s a static character bc it’s NOT TRUE!!!!! Oh I probably should’ve checked off “canon isn’t real” because cop Toph is not real to me

Iroh is. Okay I don’t think would care about him as much if I didn’t see Bad Takes all the time. The amount of times I mentally defend him in my head is such a common occurrence that I like him now. The Iroh hate tsunami caused by 2020 netflix fandom has set back Azula and Zuko discussion about 30 years and the show hasn’t even existed that long. I think he’s neat. I would fuck that old man

Last Thing Researched for Art/Writing/Hyperfixation: see above. my topic for the paper looks at how iranian muslim women have reconciled with their religion as it was being used against them pre and post-revolution. there's a lotttt of material out there on the topic. despite what we've been led to believe in western culture, my professor stresses that iran is actually the most secular country in the world. and when you look into the history you can clearly see why that is.

Favorite Old Fandom You Wish Would Drag You Back In/Have A Resurgence: the atla fandom was/is so obnoxious but in its height in 2020 it was fun seeing a really rich meta appear on the dash for every 5 dumb opinions. everybody was making gifsets and art and fics and it was so much fun. now its slowed down a bit and the only parts of fandom still kind of active are the shippers lol

Favorite Thing You Enjoy That Never Had an Active or Big "Fandom" but You Wish It Did: more like a fandom within a fandom- im glad that the "zukaang" ship stayed pretty niche within the atla fandom. like it wasn't so tiny but we stayed in our own spaces (and rlly won the idgaf war when it came to the hate) and it was just full of mature wonderful people writing THE best meta and fics and just genuinely enjoying the show, which was rare in the fandom (ironically enough)

Ohhhhh yeah. I'm missing a ton; but here's a rough list of semi-recent favorites and I will try to reblog with any more I come up with later! Hopefully I will get my act together soon so I can write/post my first Kataang fic too ;) 

Y'all know I'm a HUGE fan of @itsmoonpeaches and some of favorite Kataang works by them are helpless (I am so into you), A Breath of Sky, The Soul-Farer, and Threads of Fate but they have TONS of fabulous Kataang fics to choose from so please peruse at your leisure!

A fluffy in-universe Kataang AU where Aang saves the world without her, and they meet after the war instead. If you’ve ever wanted to read love at first sight Kataang, pining!Katara, and smack in the middle of charming and dorky!Aang, this might be up your alley. Inspired by the song “Helpless” from Hamilton." - AS CUTE AND FLUFFY AS APPA

No One Else in the World by BaSingSeSocialite: "On a vacation to Kyoshi Island after the end of the war, Aang reflects and muses." - very much in tone with the show, feels so much like an episode. Really great descriptions of waterbending too, which is SO tricky to write! Honestly all their Kataang Week 2022 works are great.

and my voice becomes the driving force by @thinkingisadangerouspastime: "Katara hates the quiet. That’s why she talks to him." - as they say in the notes, it's more of a Katara character study BUT explores what Aang means to her in a beautiful and deep way!

Speaking of @thinkingisadangerouspastime​ ...I also recommend broken pieces still belong (AMAZING exploration of Katara's character and her "emotional journey from the events of "The Western Air Temple" to those of "The Southern Raiders," as she experiences firsthand both the challenges and rewards of forgiving others (and perhaps even learns to forgive herself along the way)"; Exposition (incredibly inventive AUs!!!!! Like some of the most fascinating I've ever seen!!!); Love of My Life (a *chef's kiss* Katara and Aang reunion after the final battle that's filled to the brim with tension); and we have all eternity (to love the dead) (a remarkable take on the soulmates au).

Getting Even by SilverThunder: "Sometimes the most important thing is just settling the score - and Katara has some catching up to do." - One of the earlier Kataang fics (2012!!) but captures the playful flirtiness between them super well and the dialogue is so in character!

The Riot's Gone by margaerystark: "It didn't work. Katara clutched the amulet of spirit water to her chest, her heart pounding against her knuckles. The moment her fingers left Zuko's face - revealing unchanged, leathery skin - was the moment she knew she had made a mistake. The properties that the water once held were gone, and Zuko's scar hadn't even been healed." Katara goes through with using the spirit water from the oasis on Zuko's scar and bears the consequences." - SUCH a cool, unique AU and I love how it focuses on Katara's deep love for Aang through the lens of almost losing him

you cut through all the noise by wanderinghooves: "A year is such an excruciatingly long time. Aang is sent abroad for a year of diplomacy while Katara helps to rebuild at home. Distance makes the heart grow lonely." - Characterization and descriptions were GORGEOUS, and captured that deep love loyalty of Kataang that makes it such an everlasting romance.

teach me to live my life (because i can’t remember how) by @northerngoshawk (another one that is very much a Katara character study and helps paint a more nuanced picture of Kataang’s bond and their relationship dynamic imo) and their other fic gods don’t bleed (except you do): “Katara always thought that being the Avatar meant being a god. She learns from Aang that she is wrong.”

blue ribbons by OceanMyth: “Katara has always been fascinated with Aang's tattoos. In which old scars are healed, and broken tattoos are mended.” - Made me tearbend! I’ve never seen anyone write the take that Aang’s tattoos could be mended after he is scarred and I adore it so much. They have tons of short drabbles that are Kataang-centric too, so if you prefer short & sweet this is the person to go to!

AHHHH FUN!!! Picking only five was actually really hard, but here we go! I decided to only do one from each fandom I've written for.

you steal the air out of my lungs - Avatar: The Last Airbender, 69k words, Rated T

OF COURSE THIS FIC HAS TO BE AT THE TOP OF MY LIST, it is my crowning achievement in fic writing. It's a full on action/adventure/romance novel. Working on this fic opened my mind to the possibility of Aang ships, and the rest is truly history. I've gone through to reread it a few times and, while there are things I would change, I still think it's the best thing I'e ever written.

rotten work - The Half of it, 3.6k words, Rated T

This movie's take on love and friendship has a chokehold on me, and I loved getting to write more Ellie and Paul. It was so fun getting to think about how their relationship would develop once they had moved apart from each other, and how they'd always be there for each other.

absolution - A Court of Thorns and Roses, 6k words, Rated T

This was me aggressively turning every straight character gay in this heterosexual romance fantasy. I especially enjoyed being able to write Feyre unlearning a lot of her harmful sexist ideologies regarding attraction and sexuality.

a knife for every heart - The Sandman/Interview with the Vampire, 2.7k words, Rated M

THESE LAST TWO FICS ARE ME GOING GROSS AND MURDERY! This fic is such a stupid idea but SO FUN TO WRITE!! This is just the Corinthian and Lestat being sexy murderers together.

Lagomorpha - Yellowjackets, 2.9k words, Rated M

This was another fun, weird, bloody fic that I actually really enjoyed writing. I had to do a lot of research on rabbits for it and it was fun to incorporate what I learned into the fic. Exploring Shauna's psyche and fucked up relationship to Jackie through rabbits was very exciting.

5. What work of yours got more feedback than you expected?

I've answered this here, but I've been surprised by the amount of feedback on several of my fics. Another fic that got more feedback than expected was my short Kataang oneshot, Close to You. It's a missing scene fic that takes place after episode, The Runaway (Book 3). Katara can't sleep, so she seeks out Aang as a friend to talk to, and because she wants to reassure herself that he really is safe. It's a hurt/comfort fic with an emphasis on comfort, so I guess I can see why people liked it - it has the most kudos and comments out of all my short Kataang fics. But when I first posted the fic, I thought people would find it boring and no one would read it, because there isn't a lot that actually happens. Looks like I thought wrong! 😂

Katara and Zuko fight over Aang (Katara is jealous of Zuko's work bromance with Aang)

Katara confronts Hama for the first time since The Puppetmaster (takes place post-ATLA)

Aang continues to struggle with his firebender identity, and Katara has an idea to help him overcome that (post-ATLA)

Hakoda-centric fic where he reflects on how much Sokka has grown up in the years he has been away, with a mixture of pride and regret

An angst prompt fic for @northerngoshawk that may or may not involve one or both members of Kataang getting injured

29. Favorite line/passage you wrote this year?

I really like this line from Without Water, a missing scene fic about the ordeal of Katara healing Aang between Book 2 and Book 3:

And she discovered that lying next to Aang, touching him just to be close to him, was the first time since the crystal catacombs that she was able to rest.

I like this line because it's the turning point for Katara in that fic, as she slowly discovers what it means to heal Aang and what he really needs (and what she needs, as well).

4. 👀 A fic that you love a normal amount

@chocomd’s Without Water! THE ANGST. THE WORRY. THE LOVE. DID I MENTION THE ANGST? EEEEEEEEEEEE

no but FOR REAL! the way choco characterizes Katara in this fic, the way she writes the intimacy between Katara and Aang, the way she is able to emulate the worry and the guilt and the shame from Katara using even just her sentence structures... and did i mention the angst????

*ahem* anyways yes i love this fic a normal amount.

7.💯 A fic that makes you think #writergoals

ooooooof. this is kind of a hard one. there are SO MANY writers i know that are so, so good at what they do, and i admire every single one of them

however, i think the one fic that was the cornerstone to my writing introspection fics was your Katara-centric fic, broken pieces still belong. this fic made such a strong impression on me that it inspired me to write the avatar's fear, my very first Aang-centric fic that paved the way to my writing introspection fics today. the characterizations, the internal & external dialogue, the introspection, everything about this fic made me want to reach a point where i can write like that.

also, i get you might not be fond of this fic now, looking back on how rough the writing might feel today, but it really helped me expand my horizons to being more than an angst writer, haha.

12. 💘 A fic you couldn’t stop reading once you started

for this question, i think i’ll go with @itsmoonpeaches​’s The Ghosts That We Knew. i think i’ve read a few of her other fics beforehand, but i distinctly remember reading this fic. it was completed by the time i found it, but from the first chapter, i knew i had to get to the end. i don’t even know what exactly drew me into it. maybe it was the spirity shenanigans, maybe it was the Kataang premise (i was v excited to read more Kataang content haha), but whatever it was, it got me hooked.

18. 😭 A fic that ripped your heart out (but it hurt so good)

how did i know this one was coming okay, so this is a strange one to ask me haha, mostly because i... can’t feel emotions when i read/write. not viscerally, anyways. i might feel a bit of heaviness in my chest, depending on what the subject is, but otherwise, i have almost never, ever been moved to the point of actual tears. there have been some exceptions, but it’s only when it feels so very specific to some... negative emotions i’ve had about myself.

with that being said, there is a fic that really made me feel more than heavy, and that’s @chocomd‘s fic Lullaby for the Departed. it’s such a heavy fic that deals with (tw) miscarriage and loss and grief and death. i’ve always had a penchant for thinking on death and grief and what it means, and this fic really knocks it out of the ballpark. i’ve almost been scared to revisit it because i’m not sure i can get through it a second time without breaking into actual tears, haha. still have yet to have my heart ripped out so viscerally, tho, so this is the best answer i can give for now.

happy ffwf!! of the recent fics you've written, which is your favorite and why? of the recent fics you've read, which is your favorite and why? (you can define "recent" however you'd like!) (- thinkingisadangerouspastime)

I'll define "recent" as within the past month.

Out of the most recent fics I've written, my favorite is The Blue Morning of Jeju Island which is an Extraordinary Attorney Woo fic. Probably a close second being Reprise (mostly because I guess it just won something? It's an ATLA fic. Tbh I had a lot of fun writing the backstory for a few spirits in this fic too so...)

The Blue Morning of Jeju Island is in my heart because it's the first extremely fluffy fic I've written in a long long while and because it's in a different setting than I'm used to writing for, it was a nice challenge. I also liked how it made me feel when I wrote it. It made me feel cozy inside.

Out of the most recent fics I've read, my favorite is Without Water by @chocomd. I'm actually obsessed with it. I reread a few lines through my read through and I bookmarked it hoping to reread it again in the future. I just really love how she writes Katara and seems to understand her as a person. I'm also a sucker for post-Crossroads of Destiny Kataangst fics.
