“Y/n!” Rafe exclaims, his own shock evident in his speech. “What are you doing here?”

“It’s Sage’s first day here,” you say, and Rafe looks above your shoulder to see Sage very carefully inspecting some paint tubes kept next to the rest of the art supplies.

“I’m glad she’s in my class then,” Rafe smiles.

Your eyes widen at his words. “Your class?” You echo, confused. Even though you know exactly what he means, you want to hear it from him.

“I teach this class,” he says, walking inside. You follow him, watching him sit in the teacher’s chair, and he gestures to you to sit opposite him, a wooden table between you two.

“Wow okay,” you chuckle. You look around the classroom, the walls tinted a beautiful sky blue, with birds painted on them. The window shows a view of the carefully curated garden of the preschool.

“What, you didn’t expect me as a teacher?” He asks, a smirk playing on his lips, the table supporting his elbows and his face resting in his hands.

“Honestly? No, not really, but I like it,” you smile, leaning back into your chair and resting your back.

Suddenly you feel your pants being tugged in an all too familiar way. You look down to see Sage, a bright smile on her face.

“Mamma it’s Fafe!” She yells excitedly. You laugh at her words and pull her up into your lap.

“Yes, it’s Rafe baby,” you look up at Rafe to see him with a smile, his eyes softened as he’s looking at the little bundle of joy in your arms.

“Hello Sage, are you excited to be here?” He asks, leaning in closer to her. She nods her head vigorously with excitement, causing Rafe to laugh at her actions.

“Well then why don’t you go sit with the rest of the kids? Your mom needs to do some important work now with me,” Sage hums at his words and jumps down your lap, and rushes to her new classmates.

Rafe opens a folder and hands you a paper and a pen. You look at it to see it’s just some basic paperwork regarding Sage, her name, her birthday, and the rest of the required fields.

“You just need to fill this out and we’re all set,” he tells you and you nod at his words, looking over the empty blanks of the form. You start filling them up, but one column makes you stop.

“Uh Rafe?” You call him out. He’d busy himself with some of his own work. “I uh, I don’t have anything to fill in here,” You say, pointing to one of the blanks on the page.

“Father’s name,” he mumbles, “are you a single mother?”

He had his speculations you were single, but he didn’t want to assume something before he knew something for sure.

“Yeah,” you shy away from his gaze, your eyes settling on your lap, “I’m divorced,”

“Alright, that’s no issue, just,” he takes a pen, “check this box,”

You look at the page to see he’s checked some box regarding single parents.

“Thank you,” you smile, taking the paper back from him and filling the rest of the form.

Once you’re done filling all the paperwork, you get up from your chair to go to Sage. She’s now busied herself with painting, her brush creating random strokes on a white page. You get on your knees in front of her, your hold on her shoulders. “Mamma’s going now, okay? Don’t misbehave,” you say, giving her a stern look.

“I won’t mamma,” she smiles, and gives you a kiss on your cheek.

“I’ll come to pick you up very soon,” you tell her, getting up from the floor.

You turn around to see Rafe leaning next to the wooden table. He has a soft smile on his face, you can’t help but break into a smile yourself.

“I’ll, I’ll see you later,” your gaze has fallen to your shoes as you feel Rafe looking at you. There’s something about his blue eyes which always seem like they are piercing you. The kind of eyes which you ache to look at again just the second you stop looking at them.

The kind of eyes which are too easy to get lost in.

He wishes you well, and you leave the classroom, not knowing his gaze is fixed at you, longing for you.

You’re sitting on your couch with Sage lying on your lap, her eyes closed as she’s lost in a deep slumber. The lights of your living room are dimmed, the bright light of the tv in front of you dances across you. One of Sage’s cartoons is playing, but as she’s drifted off, you switch the channel to the news one.

“Three men caught in exchange of drugs, the heroin weighs to around 15 kilograms,” the reporter on the tv says. A little video pops up next to him, showing three men with their backs towards the camera, and each man is being held by a policeman, their hands locked well in handcuffs.

The camera cuts to their faces, and the reporter continues speaking. “The men have been identified as Bill Anderson, Aaron Simmons, and Adrian Hayes. They have been…”

The voice of the reporter fades out, as you hear the familiar name and see the familiar face.

You only hear a ringing in your ear as you sit up straight, your eyes wide, as you see Adrian with bruises on his face, his hair reduced to a bare minimum, black circles prominent under his eyes, and pale skin to add to it all.

You can’t even recognise him.

This is the same man you gave you Sage.

The same man who once promised to love you for an eternity, but now, you’re seeing him on tv, completely unrecognizable, as he gets caught for drug dealing.

You shake your head, suddenly feeling your throat dry up, your eyes wide and breathing fast. You turn off the tv, not wanting to look at that horror anymore. You had almost forgotten about Sage sleeping in your lap, looking so peaceful as her chest heaves up and down with her deep breaths.

You pick her up in your arms and take her to her room, laying her in her bed. She doesn’t detect any single movement as she continues to sleep relaxedly. You gently kiss the top of her head, smoothing her hair with your hand.

“I’ll always keep you safe baby, always.”

giyu saved you and your two siblings from a demon who attacked your family

he found you holding your little sister and brother, trying to cover them from seeing your parents being eaten by the demon. the three of you were all crying and terribly shaking so at first giyu wasn’t really sure what to do

he asked you if there was someone who could take care of you, but you simply shook your head

in that moment he decided to take you with him, asked for permission to keep you all at his house

your little sister was the first to “move on” from what happened, but you couldn’t blame her since she was very young and you tried your best to hide the scenes from her

your brother on the other hand started being angry, acting completely different from what he used to be: kind, gentle and full of joy. but once again, you couldn’t blame him either

they noticed you were less present, always thinking about what happened and sometimes dwelling on your parents’ memories. giyu noticed you always cried during the first nights you spent at his house

he tried his best to take care of you. playing with your sister, helping your brother to deal with his emotions (he let him exercise to get rid of negative emotions) and gifting you stuff to get you distracted from your thoughts

you love when he comes back with delicious food or a book for you

anyway, giyu let you meet the other pillars after a week or so, because he wanted to be sure you all were feeling a bit better

shinobu was shocked

obanai spat a simple “impossible.”

sanemi stared at giyu, then glanced at you and your siblings, trying to process that he was taking care of random children

muichiro casually glanced at you and then looked back to the sky, muttering something about forgetting soon

gyomei felt sorry about your situation and started crying of course

kyojuro encouraged & praised giyu for his decision and complimented him

tengen was surprised but recognised it was a very flashy action, he was doing the right thing by taking care of you instead of abandoning you to your destiny

mitsuri was so excited she could feel her heart exploding (her eyes were literally shining). she offered her help since she has siblings and giyu appreciated it

of course, mitsuri ended up spending loads of time with you: playing, eating together, taking care of cute animals, etc

shinobu played an important role too because your sister easily got sick so going to the butterfly mansion became a sort of routine

your brother also enjoyed spending time with the flame hashira because he was funny and kind, while your sister used to share her food with the wind hashira

something you enjoyed was tengen giving you piggybacks, usually when you’re pretty tired after being out the whole day

giyu does the same sometimes but due to tengen being taller you find it funnier

he usually looks a bit sad because deep down he fears you guys will start hating spending time with him & seek the other pillars’ company

mitsuri comforts him, saying that everyone can see clearly how you all love him, you in the first place

you’re grateful for him taking all of you, providing for your needs, making sure you’re healthy and safe

“giyu-san, i am truly grateful for everything you do for me and for my siblings. i hope we will find a way to repay for everything in the future.”

here comes a big hug because he doesn’t care about it, he grew very fond of you all and would do anything to protect you

What did you eat yesterday Season 2 - Episode 7

(yes, I jumped over episode 6, but I watched it at 3 am and just had a lot of feelings and not that many thoughts)

this episode reenforced my opinion that the show's writing is among the best in the slice-of life genre. the way themes and story-threads are introduced to come back in later episodes or get featured from a different view point makes this show not only feel well-rounded and well thought-out but it makes you think and reminisce since everything feels so real. The show treats its premise seriously: Shiro-san and Kenji being 50 and late 40s respectively is not treated as a surface-level story setting but it does the work of really dissecting and deep-diving into how these two people would view the world. Their outlook on life is so so different from mine, not only because I'm not a gay man in Japan but because of our age difference. We might share similar experiences but how we react and think about the same issues couldn't be more different. I love that I can never predict what tone the next scene might set and it feels like talking to a queer elder sharing their story. You can learn something just by listening and gain new perspectives.

Shiro-san losing a friend, thinking - yet again - about death and not having any children of his own is contrasted with how solemn but peaceful the funeral is. Here is Shiro-san imagining how tough things must be for the widow and - what he assumes - three young children only for the children being old enough to have kids on their own. It perfectly illustrates the kind of bubble in which we might experience our lives. His former classmates talk about becoming grandparents and here is Shiro-san just having started finding a way to accept his complicated emotions of not granting his parents grandchildren. It not only feels like two social circles colliding but how unintended alienating it can feel to be queer. And sometimes it just hits you that there are people around you that are both similar and very different to you. And an excellent way to connect the theme of marriage and children to the past episodes but from a very different viewpoint.

The same way Kohinata and Wataru are so important to the story. They can be comedic relief while never feeling cartoonish but they also offer more variety in how a gay couple can live together paired with the generation gap between the three and Wataru.

While writing is fantastic, this show equally is indebted to the stellar performances by Uchino Seiyo and Nishijima Hidetoshi. The way Uchino Seiyo can carry pure joy in his voice gets me everytime he calls for Shiro-san off screen. The way they both move inside the supermarket and as a couple, the way they embody their characters so thouroughly is never not giving me joy.

favourite moment: Kenji realising that Shiro-san wants validation by the supermarket lady and being overjoyed at that fact and that Shiro-san will wear his glasses more often.

food talk

Not only was this another fantastic episode, I am craving some nabeyaki udon now and i wish i had brought back more yuzu kosho from japan. I wish I could get my hands on fresh clams here. Never tried clam soup with just clams but it looks delicious. And I wish I could get fish roe here.

production corner

I really commend this show for making this flat so congruent with its history. you understand why shiro rented it in the first place. you can feel both their styles coming together and also the different times they might have purchased things. it is not planned by an interior designer but has a consistent style that feels very them.

26 Ways to Feel Mortal - K: Kiss

The party had been invited by Raz and Raini to their wedding as a way to say ‘thank you’. Geno fascinated by the ceremony. The decorations, the warm words, the absolute joy the puppet felt in the room. Even with the moment of slight concern when he’d witnessed a few Toads began to quietly weep.

“They’re happy tears.” Peach whispered her answer. Which confused Geno further, but decided for clarification later.

But the highlight of interest arrived near the end of the ceremony. Geno leaned forward curiously as the marrying couple beamed to each other before pressing their mouths together. The puppet tilted his head as the room erupted into cheers and applause. He assumed it was meant to be something important…but he couldn’t quite understand the interest.

When the ceremony hall emptied out and went to the dinning hall, Geno was introduced to the magical work of sweets. Sure, food in general was great. But the beautifully sugar concoction that was decorated with more sugar that was just as visually pleasing as it was on his tongue? This was the peak of deliciousness.

Even with the numerous slices of cake he could gain (no one seemed to be stopping him, but Mallow did look a little worried when Geno claimed his 5th slice), Geno was pulled back to his curiosity. Mainly when the family members cheered as the newly weds pressed their mouths together once more. The confusion returned in full, the plate of cake even lowering as Geno watched.

“Are you alright?”

Geno looked up as Peach drew closer. The puppet felt a little nervous around the princess as he’d never interacted with royalty before. Even if Peach seemed very approachable.

“Um, hello princess, I’m feeling fine. Why do you ask?”

Laughing softly, Peach claimed a seat next to Geno. “Please, call me Peach. I only asked because you looked a bit confused.”

“Oh, well… I suppose I am a little curious about a custom I’ve not seen before. The one where mouths are pressed together. Raz and Raini did this nearing the end of the ceremony. I also remember you did something similar with Mario after we stopped Booster. What is that action?”

“It’s called a kiss,” Peach explained.

“Kiss?”

“It’s a gesture shared between people who care about each other, and it’s with their lips. Not their mouths. But I can understand the confusion. You know about hugs, right?”

“Yes.”

“A kiss is…well, hmm, how to explain it. It’s something that’s only shared between beings who really care about each other.”

Geno slowly blinked as he thought this information over. Eyes eventually went over to Mario, who was smiling as the newlyweds talked with him. No doubt thanking the hero once more for saving the day.

The puppet hummed softly.

“Um, how important is this gesture?”

Peach pondered for a moment, “I would say pretty important. It’s one that’s a big claim for love. Why the curiosity?”

“Just thinking.” Geno replied quietly. As he took another bite from his cake slice. A new worry arose quickly as the fork scraped across the roof of his mouth. The fork clattering onto the plate as his now free hand pressed against the area.

“What if… What if someone doesn’t have lips?”

“The gesture would still be understood and appreciated.”

“But would it really be the same? I mean…” Worry filled eyes flickered back up to Mario. Fingers pressing harder against his mouth.

Easily observing all of this, and understanding immediately, Peach placed a hand on the puppet’s shoulder. Geno looked up to be greeted with a warm smile.

“I assure you, Mario would not judge or turn you away just for that.”

“I- Wait- That’s not- I mean-” Geno felt like he was about to implode. A few minutes of trying to remember words, he was eventually able to force out, “A-Aren’t you with Mario?”

“Yes, we are. But, I don’t mind sharing.” Peach laughed softly as Geno panicked further, “Before I lose you further, just know that you need to let Mario choose. However, I have no doubt that he’ll accept you.”

Geno frowned, fingers going back up to his mouth. “Even with my physical limitations.”

“Hush now, there’s nothing wrong with you. Why don’t you just ask him?”

Some weird feeling squirms in his stomach, Geno shook his head. “I…don’t believe that would not be the best idea.”

Peach frowned softly at this, but slowly nodded. “Very well, if you believe that’s what’s best…”

It was a quiet relief as they started to leave Star Hill, the whispers falling mute the further they went. Geno able to enjoy the other worldly surroundings. The lighting really made him feel that he was back on Star Road.

“Hey.” Geno turned to Mario. The hero looked sheepish as he walked next to the puppet, “Thank you, for talking to me back there.”

“Of course, I’m happy to listen.” Geno tilted his head as he watched as Mario seemed to grow more nervous. Before he could ask what was wrong, Mario quickly leaned over. Pressing his lips to Geno’s cheek.

Just like that, Geno forgot how to walk.

Mario quickly reached out to help steady the frazzled puppet. “Sorry! Are you okay?”

They had stopped, each holding onto the other’s arms. The rest of the team continued on.

Geno became very aware of how along they were now. Of how perfect the different colors of lighting laid across Mario’s face.

“Geno, are you okay?” Mario asked again. Softer, gentler this time. The human reaches up to place a hand against Geno’s cheek.

“Uh huh.” The puppet’s voice replied softly.

His soul was vibrating with excitement as Mario’s eyes darted down to his mouth before connecting back up to Geno’s eyes.

It was the only warning given.

Geno was sure he let out a surprised gasp as Mario moved forward. The sound covered when they connected lips. Genot thought he was going to explode from his body, but was able to calm himself to fully enjoy the moment. Hands reaching out to clutch at the front of Mario’s overalls.

He wasn’t sure how long they remained like that, but Geno was a little upset when Mario pulled away. The small feeling fading away as he took in the human’s fully flushed face. Panting softly.

Getting a little boost of confidence, Geno said, “Did I feel you a little breathless?”

Mario let out a snort, “Oh shush.”

“Make me.”

“Gladly.”

They did it.

They won.

They’d gotten the final Star Piece.

The villain was defeated and fled.

Sure, Bowser’s fortress was a pile of rubble. Geno was confident that he’d heard the Koopa’s wails of despair when the walls had begun to fall away. But at least those important pieces were still standing.

Said puppet slowly made his way over to the glowing Star Piece. Holding a hand out to over it over the humming piece of energy. His home. Feeling both joyous and a little worried about what this meant for the very near future.

It was over…

“Geno!”

He looked up as Mario called out his name. Stumbling over some of the chunks of debris, looking pretty banged up. But beaming as he ran over to Geno.

On his part, Geno pulled away from the Star Piece to rush forward. Mario faltered slightly. No doubt startled by how the puppet ran over to him.

It was forgotten about when Geno wrapped his arms around Mario’s neck. Planting a kiss as quickly as he could. Mario stumbled slightly, but corrected his hold to keep Geno close. Arms tightly warped around the puppet.

When they pulled away, Geno was properly placed back down onto the ground. Still held close with their foreheads pressed together.

“You okay?” Mario whispered.

Geno sighed happily, smiling. “I’m perfect.”

Finished Crymachina and I am so sad that a game that a game with that compelling of characters is attached to the most 4/10 action game I have ever played. It's like if Nier Automata was for formerly religious lesbians. Like. The gameplay is incredibly shallow and there are some important mechanics (backstabs doing more damage being the biggest example imo) that really feel like they shoulda been telegraphed better, you can just one button through the entire game, the scaling is fucked for damage and ExP, there's a lot wrong with it on a pure systemic level. The level design is also bad but in a way that I think adds to the narrative so. I will let that one go. The characters and their relationships are the real meat of this game IMO and that's mostly what I wanna focus on. The game is about lesbians, and they're both tropey and have legitimate depth? The plot takes a backseat for the most part, which is fine. It's not a particularly strong plot but it's good enough where it counts to work for its purposes. I guess first on the agenda is looking at Leben and Enoa, our protagonists? While the story mostly follows Leben, Enoa is the character the game is most *about* in actuality.

Enoa runs the Imitation Garden, AKA Eden. It's the main hub for everything, and she acts as the caretaker of both it and the E.V.E., because it's also where she lives. Having been broken down twice, the game is about her reconstruction and recovery on two levels, and I do think this is something the game's use of the Kabbalah adds to. As you unlock the levels in game, the main "nodes" you access are all named for the different sefirot of the Tree Of Life. As Enoa develops, you progress the Kabbalah. I think the fact that the game's main ending cuts off at Hod does undermine its use a little, but the sefirot of Malkuth, Yesod, and Netzach are also used in ways postgame that are clever, so I'll let it slide. Enoa is deeply caring, putting everyone above herself. She is earnest, incredibly emotional, and seeks to transcend her machinehood. She routinely invalidates herself and her experiences, given the fact she isn't an authentic human, because she has so much love for humanity.

To contrast that, is Leben. The first E.V.E. we get to see, and to some degree our player surrogate, but that's a role passed around and abandoned as needed, she just plays it the most given how she introduces us to the game. Leben is grounded, prone to flights of fancy but then often backtracking them upon realizing the full consequences of her actions. She resents humanity, and adores machines. Notably, Leben, unlike the other E.V.E., wasn't actually born out of Enoa simulating humanity. Leben was, at one point, Propator, but she's also not that person any more.

It's kinda hard to sell the dynamics in this game because well, it's their execution that carries it, but I still wanna paint the best picture I can. Leben and Enoa's relationship is very much them being lovey dovey, partially because they're fresh to it (I don't subscribe to the honeymoon phase as an idea, I think they're just figuring stuff out somewhat still), and partially because they're aware of their circumstances and are living their lives to the fullest despite that. There's a lot of care for one another in it, and their dreams are shared and centered around mutual joy for each other. It's very much a love that's still finding its feet, but the feelings they have do a lot of the heavy lifting.

For starting the other pair, we have Mikoto. A bona fide badass who values her appearance incredibly strongly. Not in a physical or vein way necessarily, she just values being cool a lot. She loves film as a medium, and likes ribbing other people, as well as sardonic jokes. Mikoto also speaks with her actions rather than her words consistently. She doesn't like being emotionally honest in words, despite the fact she also wears her heart on her sleeve. To contrast, Ami is a sweetheart. She's very cute and flowery in all she does, and is completely devoted to her family of the other three girls, but especially Mikoto who she consistently states her adoration for. She's also axe crazy as hell and is represented as an oni in her battle attire. Gap moe out the ass, basically. Ami also has to be wanted. If she can't be useful, she feels like she has no purpose. This, notably, isn't tied to her being in a wheelchair in her past life, but tied to her relationship with her family. Feels like a bare minimum thing but it still feels important to mention.

Ami and Mikoto don't ever label their relationship, but it doesn't matter because what they are is clear enough, maybe a little less to Ami given some of her anxieties, but you can know very easily. They've shared their existences in all the ways that matter, and at that point a label is set dressing. They've promised to spend eternity and a day together. They're like an old couple in how they talk and interact with the pair of Leben and Enoa, and it's super sweet.

Typing this I realize that I can't find the words to say what I want to say about this as well as I want to, because there's just a lot that I feel is done not through being able to communicate it, but the experience of it? Either way, the point is it's good. I just wish that the good relationship dynamics we have weren't attached to a middling action game that only goes on sale for 10% off and costs $60.

Happy Birthday Rei Sakuma! (2023)

A small birthday oneshot for today in honor of Rei Sakuma's birthday!

Also a preview for the Rei focused long fic (yes Rei is getting his very own long fic… Or he is a very important main character at least)! Also previewing an OC I still have to inroduce (I will soon... I hope)

Izumi's birthday oneshot

It had been early in the morning and usually Rei would wake up alongside someone else by then, a tiny, small girl, the body shape equivalent to what someone would call a ‘chibi’. Long, blonde hair and round dog ears as well as a short yet round and fluffy dog tail she loved to wag around. Her eyes are big and gray yet always sparkling with joy. Her clothing? All of said clothes were hand made. He had asked an ‘old friend’ for a quick favor to design her some clothes. Said clothes would usually match his, always in a darker color pattern. A little ironic given this tiny one was a very lively and optimistic girl. And yet, she had shown herself grateful when having received them. In fact, she had said something interesting herself. “I want to wear matching clothes with you Mister Rei!” all while having the biggest smile plastered onto her face. And who was he to deny her this request?

It had not been long since then, where he found the little girl inside a box out in the cold. She seemed to have been abandoned by someone, that in itself alone was cruel. And yet she had accepted her fate, not even minding it to his very own shock. And thus Rei took the girl with him in an instant, solely to give her shelter and find her a home. Or at least that had been the intention at first. He quickly grew attached to her and decided to take care of her since then, as if she was his own daughter. Her name – Chibikabe, or ‘Cheeb’ as a nickname. She had introduced herself with that name at least.

But where had she been this morning? It was sometimes not unusual that Chibikabe got up early to the kitchen of the shared dorms to cook lunch for one of his roommates for school but she had not been there when he first thing in the morning. Another dorm room? No luck. Asking anyone where she was? They had not seen her. It was as if the earth had soaked her up and she disappeared, something he feared. What if she ran off? Sure, she did not seem like the type but one never knew. Maybe she was upset about something? He was not being careful enough, was he? What guardian he was…

And thus it was expected to see him walking around the entire building to see where Cheeb was. He was even calling out her name but nothing. Maybe his eyesight got worse? This was almost like losing your kid in the local supermarket… Great…

That was until he went back into the dorm room to check if by any chance she had returned and he had just walked past her. And white he would be greeted by the one in question there was something she was holding above her head, carrying it with her nubs.

“Ah, Mister Rei! Good morning and happy birthday!” She greeted him pretty much right away, tail wagging eagerly while holding a cake on a plate, squishing her ears a little. And yet she was looking up at him all the same with a smile, as if she had not just worried him and nearly given him a heart attack.

“Ah— There you are, little one!” He said, deciding to ignore a part of her statement for a moment. He had heard her yet was too occupied by other thoughts for this short moment. He even got down to meet her almost face to face, making sure his expression was soft yet a little scolding. He did not want to scare her yet he did not want to let her get off the hook either. “I’ve been looking all over for you! I was worried! Where were you?”

“Oh? W… Were you? I’m sorry…” She responded, tail stopping to wag and nearly dropping. Rei sighed as a result.

“Hey, don’t worry. I’m not mad. I just want to know where you have been.”

“B… But I made you worry…”

“W… Well… I can’t deny that…” He admitted, knowing he had said it out loud after all. “Next time just leave a note where you are, alright?”

“But I wanted to surprise you…”

“Haha, I appreciate the thought, really. But disappearing like that so early on.” He tried to reassure her, his expression becoming a little softer than before.

“Sorry… I wanted to be the first to greet you, Mister.” Cheeb explained, her mood seeming to be almost dropping. He couldn’t look at this and he wouldn’t. So instead he lifted the plate off her nubs and head, placed it onto one of the desks and pat her gently, trying to cheer her up that way.

“I understand. Thank you for that young one.” He responded ever so softly. “It is a pleasant surprise, really. But promise me to at least tell me where or with who you are so I know you are safe, alright?”

She looked up, ears slowly perking up as she was staring at Rei for a moment, eyes fixated on him. She seemed to be somewhat surprised by this gesture, as if not having expected something like that, before suddenly nodding slowly which paused the pats for a moment, then smiling a little herself.

“Yes, Mister! Promise!”

“Thank you~” He responded before then getting up while lifting the small one up as well, holding her in his arms. “By the way, did you make the cake?”

“Yes!” She nodded a few times while looking up. “I didn’t know what to give you but birthdays always have cakes, don’t they? So I thought of making one! Or is that wrong?”

“No, I appreciate the effort. And you carried that here all by yourself?” “Yeeees~ I didn’t want to wake anyone up after all!”

“Haha, looks like someone is already strong. Let’s share it later with the others, how about it?”

“Yes Mister~ Hehe~ Again, happy birthday!”

Could you expand on why Dumbledore sent the team to the tea party at the beginning, besides to have Newt convey his message to Vogel? Coz I felt it was kinda pointless, they didn't achieve anything specific and it ended up with Theseus being thrown into jail and the long and somewhat unwanted swivel sequence in the Erkstag. I would also love if you would explain Theseus' arc in this film.

He didn't send them for anything else, but I just think that this is a good enough reason. If Vogel had changed his mind they would have avoided the mess. The fact that Vogel was not convinced does not make the mission less important. By the way, if anything it's kinda Albus' fault that the Scamanders failed. Vogel does not dismiss Newt immediately. Henrietta Fischer calls him to make his speech, and by extent to announce that the evidence against Gellert is insufficient and Vogel looks at her with a thoughtful expression, casts his eyes down a bit and turns to Newt and asks if Albus finally decided to leave Hogwarts and do something about the current turmoil. He chooses easy, but if Albus had given him a better alternative he might have taken it.

Now let me talk about my boy, Theseus, because I just adore him. Newt's main purpose in being there is so that the group will be granted access in the first place. The fact that ultimately nothing is achieved is the very point. Theseus is the efficient brother, the war hero with a career that is socially appreciated (unlike Newt's), the ministry-family man who is in charge of other aurors. Newt loves Theseus, but he also kind of resents him in the way that a younger brother may feel about the sibling that gets the most attention. We see this several times: The jealousy over Theseus' relationship with Leta, Newt's avoidance to going to dinner, his annoyance at being asked to compromise with the ministry's plans, his joy when Tina takes Theseus out, the way he ignores Theseus and does not bother with introducing him to Lally. Even at Pere Lachese. Theseus gave the right order to the aurors by asking him not to engage so, when one attacked nontheless, the mess that ensued was definitely not because Theseus made a wrong call.

In SoD Theseus, in his desire to stop Grindelwald and having being given a little push by the fact that he trusts Newt's judgement and Newt trusts Albus, decides to put his faith in Albus and to become part of a plan of which he has no control. In fact, he doesn't even have any idea of why he's doing whatever he's doing. The character is thrown in a situation that puts him completely out of his comfort zone.

When they’re at the German Ministry, Theseus is in a very different state of mind than he was at Pere Lachese. There, he had control of the situation and had the rationality to not engage impulsively. This time he is affected by the presense of the people that he was associated with Leta’s death. A shift has already happened in the room and it’s clear that the ministry has allowed Grindelwald the upper hand. If he had stayed in control he probably wouldn’t have ended up in Erkstag. Even when he’s released, Albus mentions the things the others achieved and adds: ‘And you are alive and you are well’. Not only are they at a worse place than from where they’ve started, but he’s the one who has contributed the least. More than Theseus learning to face failure, the events at the ministry are a formative experience because he is failed, attacked and erased by the system that he has so much faith in. He sees the corruption of the kind of law enforcement he has been part of, lead by a head auror that is also young and efficient and whom he’s in first-name basis with.

The Erkstag is another example of Theseus having to push past his comfort zone, but this time it’s in a way that furthers his relationship with Newt. The brothers not sharing common interests other than helping the world reminds me of Albus and Aberforth, with Theseus bring the Albus and Newt the Aberforth of the situation: Theseus is the one with the traditional career and more of a people’s person, while Newt is more comfortable around his creatures, and while Theseus tries to reach out in some ways Newt is holding back. The Erkstag gives us a context in which Newt’s less appreciated experties are the ones that ensure their survival. More than that, Theseus himself has to try to let loose and to follow Newt’s lead, using a method that would otherwise feel ridiculous to him. When the brothers are out, they are holding hands without having realized it and this reflects what the scene brought out in their relationship.

Another interesting part is how Theseus affects Albus’ character. Albus does not talk about the blood troth to everyone. But he needs to come clean to Theseus about his reasons for not joining them and allows a glimpse of his vulnerability to gain trust. Theseus indulges him and he doesn’t back down even when he questions Albus’ plan and feels that it’s not succeeding. This is why it is important that, after Grindelwald’s escape, Theseus is the one to make Albus promise that he’ll stop Gellert. Theseus represents those that put their faith in Albus, those that are putting their own lives on the line and, because of Leta’s death, those who have lost loved ones to Grindelwald. The reason that Albus initially provided for not going after Gellert himself does not stand anymore and he has to do right by Theseus, who trusted him, and by the world.

HAPPY NEW YEAR'S FT LILY & ED / YOU MADE IT !

Whoa the year sure as hell went fast and slow huh? I'll try to keep this short and as much as I'd like to tag all of you, I'm so lucky to have so many neat people I've gotten to know on my second year of writing Edward on Tumblr! Anyone who knows me knows how impossibly important he is to me as a fave, and many other people, and I love talking to said people and sharing in the overall Fullmetal Alchemist love, be it the character or the series itself!

Thank you listening to me this year, and for being so patient! I know sometimes it's hard to discern genuine words but I really mean it when I say my dash has so much talent and heart. All of you bring something with your portrayals, and all of you above all I hope are having fun no matter what hardships you face, I'll likely never know, but I am here to listen or simply be a fun writing partner to hopefully add some energy to your day. This year was...hard.

I lost my grandmother, who to me was a second mother. A lot of things just happened, and it felt like I was drowning most of the time! But you know what? A lot of good still happened. I've made some amazing friends and they've supported me so much. To you reading this, whether we interact, have yet to interact, talk, message or call each other in Discord or via text in IMS? You helped me through what I know some things will be life long hardships, but also a lot of joy too. And I'm so grateful for that.

I really love Edward Elric. I can't stress it enough but before I knew what a favorite was he was my favorite. That really hasn't changed much. He introduced me to animanga and to what can be done when fiction is at its finest. He became more than a hero in a story to little old me. He became a friend. I'm sure all of us with our favorites have similar sentiments, and whatever drives your energy, I really really hope you follow it in the New Year. You don't have to make a to-do-list or anything you don't want to do.

Just live. Be healthy as best as possible. If you're in trouble reach out here or to people near you in the world in the physical sense. Know your dash, people followed you for a reason and a lot of the time? It's out of interest in you as a person. You matter and it's a war we have with ourselves I know especially when the climate here can be rough sometimes but please don't give up on the faces and names of people I'm sure are waiting for us next year to interact!

Let's make this a safer place. Let's make it a kinder place. I know for myself I definitely want to engage more, reach out more, plot more and write more. My energy is back and I don't feel it as an obligation, but because there are so many faces I may never meet in person, but still have so much to offer to my life. Whatever you do next year, I may not know you, but you have my full support and you have my listening ear if you need a random strange little energetic gremlin on your dashboard.

Take a deep breath, and know that people here that you talk to love you. It's okay if you don't believe it, but I watch my dash and I admire so many of you. You're all on my dash for a reason and it's my goal to focus on writing much much more for my own enjoyment and to also hopefully bring the color your writing and presence gives me back to you! Did I mention I also want to make new friends too? Please please come over via IMS, Discord, or liking a single post and I will vroom your way faster than the cows in my hometown. Yes it's...uh kind of like Resembool here I'm not even joking. Help. If not? Watch out because Lily is coming! I'm going to make a real, genuine want to reach out and engage and let you know I see you and boy am I interested!

Thank you for meeting me! Thank you for being my friend! Thank you for being my mutual or a face or someone who was here briefly and just wanted to move along. Whatever you were, are or will be to me, I'm thankful for you and your life and I hope you're alright wherever you are!

And I really, really am sending all my strength and energy into hoping it's a kinder, softer year next year for all of us. One filled with things to laugh about, and to know we aren't alone. Thank you all so much! You've somehow made me become even more obsessed with Fullmetal Alchemist, my longest fandom, my home in many ways, even more, and Ed and I both mean it when I say thanks! Well, I'd shove him to say thanks if he were real!

The Commons

So I've released my Jenny Everywhere stories Attack of the Rise of the Revenge of the Scheme of Doctor Draconic and This Might Happen Someday into the public domain via Creative Commons 0. Previously, they'd been released as Creative Commons 4.0 Attribution, but I decided that it wasn't open enough.

Both This Might Happen Someday and Attack Etc. of Doctor Draconic were written for Jenny Everywhere. Attack Etc. of Doctor Draconic was a vehicle to introduce Laura's villainous secret identity as the title character, and the latter was a story created for Jenny Everywhere Day. They aren't "stories which happen to include Jenny Everywhere", they are "Jenny Everywhere stories", and I feel like CC-BY-or-CC0 plus The Paragraph is the logical conclusion of Jenny's open-source concept.

But like ... in general, I'm one of those people who wants to be heard. Not, like, in the "celebrity" sense of fame-and-glory; that way lies disaster. I have neither the desire to live nor the ability to withstand that kind of life (and, of course, any trans or non-binary person who gains any level of fame promptly gets harassed off the internet). But I'm the sort of person who'll post the same thing to Tumblr, Cohost, Pillowfort, Twitter, and one or two Mastodon accounts.

And I want to share the joy of creation, not just keep it to myself! I've seen many stories where I wished I could create something in the same setting which wasn't specifically fanfiction, without having to jump through legal hoops -- and conversely, I've seen many stories which were bad, but had kernels of interesting ideas, which made me want to write my own improved version. (I've had the idea of filing the serial numbers off Ranma 1/2 bouncing back and forth in my head for years, but I still haven't 100% figured out a method of changing genders which is as elegant in its simpicity and versatility as "getting splashed with hot or cold water", unless I just used that and had a character say, in-universe, "oh yeah, I got the idea from that one Rumiko Takahashi manga ...")

But basically, people have been telling each other's stories, with or without their own spin, for as long as humans have been humans; "copyright", the idea that a story or character could belong to someone specific, is new. So this is my way of enabling that for other people, in some small way. You want to write a published story about Doctor Draconic and make money off it? Sure, as long as you include the Paragraph for Jenny herself! You want to take the general setting of This Might Happen Someday and write a comic book which makes actual definite decisions about the worldbuilding details, but without the hypothetical real-world Jenny Everywhere and Jenny Nowhere Except Maybe They Aren't? Go right ahead!

I'm not 100% sure whether I'll release non-Jenny Everywhere stories in CC0 or in CC-BY. The difference is that in the latter case, you just have to include a notice to the effect of "so-and-so is remixed from whatever-story by Delila H. Smith and was released under a CC-BY license!" with the link, which is simple and makes it clear to everyone else that it's available for use (in a similar manner to Jenny Everywhere's Paragraph); on the other hand, people have screwed up simpler things, and copyleft trolls are a thing. Plus, it's not like everyone forgot Bram Stoker's name when Dracula entered into the public domain.

But the important thing, ultimately, is that you'll still be able to use it either way.

Hi!! Please share your top five favourite shows! 🤠

Hey anon, thank you for asking, sorry I took so long to answer, it was really hard for me to choose since my taste in TV shows changed so drastically over the last couple of years. I was thinking of going with more modern shows I enjoyed in the past, that I used to consider my "all time favorite shows" like Succession or Westworld, but the truth is, if you want an authentic answer, I should be answering with my current favorite shows because the longer I thought about it, the more I realized that, especially Succession just isn't holding the same joy it used to hold to me, and I haven't watched it in a long time. I think, to be an "all time favorite show" you need to enjoy rewatching a show even years after you first saw it. So, here are my current top 5 tv shows.

1. MASH

Need I say more? Honestly one of the most entertaining shows I've seen in a long time, and I think it's a real shame that growing up my parents never introduced me to it, let alone watched it themselves (I know that bc one time my dad saw it on TV and tried guessing what M*A*S*H stood for 🤪)because it has such an important message, I think it's especially great because it's one of the only shows I watch in both english and german because the dubbing is just THAT good

2. Little House on the Prairie

Another one my parents failed to show to me that I think I missed out on growing up because the lessons learned in each episode are so important and I think it's just overall a really well done show. There's not a single character I would say I dislike, like okay there are some I might enjoy more than others but overall I just think they're all very fleshed out, authentic characters. I also enjoy the overall dynamic of the characters interacting with each other like one big family.

3. Highway to Heaven

Honestly the amount of times this show made me think about my own self, my "privilege" and the way we as humans should be interacting with each other and the nature around us is amazing. I can't believe it was made in 1984 because I keep seeing themes that really resonate with "modern" problems like the climate crisis or inclusivity and being reminded that those are not 21th century problems but something humanity has been dealing with since at least another century. The theme of this show is so hopeful and inspiring that I actually feel it's impact on me, and the way I started behaving around others. It's also one of the only tv shows to make me cry which is really an accomplishment (okay to be fair MASH and LHOTP did that too)

4. Columbo

Ha ha, funny police man, solving crimes, has a cute dog, drives beat up car, bamboozles the murderer, very smart actually, need I say more?

5. Dead Mountain / Перевал Дятлова (Dyatlov Pass)

Holy cow, I've never seen a show like this one. The cinematography, the music, everything felt so refreshing and new. I think it's a very good interpretation of what might have happened during the Dyatlov Pass incident, it really plays around with all the theories and concludes with the most logical/ scientifically proven scenario. I wish more people knew about this show but given the political situation in Russia I do understand how it could slip under many peoples radars, still a shame it'll mostly likely disappear into the unknown, although I did managed to buy a copy on DVD

hi hello thank you that is very kind,,,,,,,, i'm running on Stress Stress Anxiety Brain rn so i don't know how coherent this will be but talking about blorbos helps me feel better so i will Attempt A Ramble.

the tl;dr for tftgs is that it's a horror-comedy series that i have been fixated on for a hot minute and that i am almost constantly rotating in the background of my mind. it is INCREDIBLY problematic™ in several ways and i do have a lot of issues with it

(namely its handling of disabled/neurodivergent characters and ableism is Not Great at the best of times, there are minor characters who use a lot of nasty derogatory language that makes me super uncomfy even though i Know they're at least not Celebrated for that and are condemned by the narrative, and also a lot of the characters are just fucking MEAN to each other)

but something about it scratches an itch in my brain that i didn't know was there. i love the characters (or at least my six faves, but there's a lot of others i adore even if they're not My Blorbos) so dearly and i am going to scoop them up and run away with them at high speeds to give them the happy endings they deserve.

this is also where i reveal i haven't actually finished reading the series in its entirety yet because i am a slow reader. i did rewrite chapter one of the first book tho as like a writing exercise, and i posted some of that here if anyone wants to check that out (shameless self promo). (No pressure or obligation tho)

okay rosa rosa rosa my beloved darling rosa. i am going to talk about some of my headcanons for rosa and also share some of my favorite Rosa Moments in the series. i will put this all under the cut b/c idk how long this will be <3 i will avoid spoilers as much as possible in case anyone reading this wants to maybe check out the series (though if you do feel free to reach out for like. a list of relevant triggers/content warnings, b/c i am happy to provide).

ROSA VASQUEZ my darling. okay so rosa is a character introduced in the second book, and she is a d e l i g h t. like... the whole series centers around a group of people who work at a shitty gas station next to a shitty small town, and rosa is introduced as one of the newest employees at the gas station.

rosa is just. baby. and i don't mean that in an infantilizing way, i mean that in an I Love This Character way.

she's introduced as this incredibly sweet, bubbly gal who's excited to work at the gas station despite the fact that the people there keep treating her like shit even before she's hired. i'm not going to talk about calvin ambrose (a minor character in book two) in depth but i am going to hunt him for sport for being both sexist AND racist towards rosa. and for other reasons but that's a big one.

one of my favorite things about rosa is that like... the protagonist, jack, misses her first day of work SEVERAL times and so he can't train her!!! and eventually she gets so fed up that she comes to confront him! because rosa is a sweetheart but also she stands up for herself and others and I LOVE THAT.

and of course she's not mean but she does tell him off BUT when she finds out he had uh. very important and understandable reasons. she apologizes and he apologizes and anyway rosa and jack being nice to each other and being friends. it brings me joy.

and anyway rosa ends up telling jack that she's not going to work at the gas station actually, and she and jack wish each other well.

BUT S I K E HER NEW WORKPLACE ~MYSTERIOUSLY BURNS DOWN~ AND JACK'S BOSS TELLS HIM ABOUT IT BEFORE THE NEWS KNOWS ABOUT IT. AND THEN TELLS HIM TO MAKE SURE ROSA WORKS AT THE GAS STATION. WEIRD VIBES BUT OK!!!

anyway ok actual favorite rosa moments.

my favorite rosa moments from book two:

when jack is training her on and she is taking Super Careful Notes in a little notepad and taking the job Very Seriously

when jack runs out of things to train her on and she ends up like. deep cleaning the gas station out of frustration.

when she finds the box of videogames in the closet and gets REALLY EXCITED until she finds two dead mice in there. and then she asks jack if they can hold a funeral for the mice.

the mice funeral, where rosa gives an adorable and heartfelt eulogy for the mice

"rosa i'm sorry but you were floating off the ground and chanting in a voice that wasn't your own and we panicked" "oh. i'm sorry. i didn't mean to."

rosa just. she brings me joy. she is a delightful breath of fresh air in this series and even though jack is my All Time Favorite, rosa is up there too.

anyway uhhh some Rosa Headcanons That I Believe Are Canon And You Can't Tell Me Otherwise:

rosa is trans. i refuse to entertain arguments about this. how do i know? i just know.

she is also really short!!! she and jack are both incredibly tiny and everyone else is tall

i headcanon rosa as a biromantic asexual mainly b/c that's what i headcanon jack as, and i think the idea of them having that Solidarity is a super cute concept.

i like the idea of jack and rosa as having a kind of sibling-type bond. that's my ideal relationship dynamic with them.

rosa is implied to be one of the youngest/probably The youngest member of the main cast so i like to think she's a somewhat recent college grad who's just trying her best.

she absolutely likes baking. you cannot convince me otherwise.

in my AUs and such, rosa has a cat. he is a sphinx cat and his name is Mister.

okay this is long but uhhh last thing i will share. i do have some Art of rosa but tbh i'm not super happy with it </3 i will instead share a meme i made with tupperbot with rosa. a quote that i think sums her up as a character.

Unlocking Life Lessons - Exploring Must-Watch Kdramas

Hi, I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Jessa, and I am 20 years old. I want to share some must-watch Kdramas and the lessons I have learned that have helped me in my self-improvement, growth, realization, and insights. Most of you might wonder, 'Does it really help her?' Definitely yes, Kdrama is just like reality, but with a twist that brings valuable life lessons to light and expresses unsaid feelings. It's a journey worth taking, and I'm excited to share my experiences and insights with you.

So here is the list of four Kdramas that I have prepared, which are really memorable to me:

1. Reply 1988

I've watched this Kdrama countless times because each family portrayed in the series experiences situations and challenges that many viewers can relate to. Whether it's dealing with love and relationships, facing hardships, or experiencing moments of joy and triumph, the characters' journeys resonate deeply with the audience, making the drama highly engaging and impactful. This movie emphasizes the importance of family bonds, especially during hard times. We should provide support to them not only in their happy times but also in their challenging times. While it's early, we must make them feel the love they deserve because we don't know when they will be there for us. Treat them nicely and try to understand each other because family is our foundation, and their love and support are invaluable. For instance, there are times when we do something without being mindful of our actions, and even if it is small, we must not invalidate it because every action, no matter how seemingly insignificant, can have an impact on our family members. It's important to be considerate and thoughtful in our interactions with them, showing kindness and empathy in both words and deeds.

2. My Liberation Notes

I only watched this once and already forgot the rest, but the most memorable one really resonated with me because I could relate to their situation. One thing is being an introverted person, and there are other lines that I relate to;

"I didn't do anything but I'm already exhausted" - This line is what I always feel every day in my life. I just don't understand why sometimes I want to isolate myself in one place. I feel tired of dealing with other people and myself, and I don't want someone to talk to. I just want to be alone, always alone.

"Let's keep going, I don't know why I have to live, but let's have a descent life while I'm alive." - It totally expresses how I fee....I have this sense of determination to keep living, even though I don't know the purpose or reason for my existence. I feel stuck doing the same things every day, with no hope of anything new or exciting.

"It feels like I'm stuck, but I don't know how to get out." - Similar to the second line. I always feel like I'm stuck, and I don't know how to figure out why because it is really hard to understand myself deeply. Maybe I'm the problem. Or maybe there are things that I didn't realize I'm still holding on to, but I just didn't notice because I was too focused on the pain I felt and the situations I experienced (trauma). I became numb until I forgot about them. Also, I don't know how to express it through words.

"I'm not unhappy, but at the same time I'm not happy either." - I'm in a state where I'm not unhappy, but at the same time, I'm not exactly happy either. It's like I'm in between, and it's a complex feeling that's hard to put into words.

These thoughts teach me that sometimes I feel tired and stuck, not sure why. I want to be alone and figure things out, but it's hard to understand my feelings. I keep going, even though I'm not always happy. It's about finding a way to live meaningfully, even when life feels confusing and uncertain.

3. Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha

"Life may seem long, but it really isn't. Throw away unnecessary thoughts and be honest with yourself"

This perspective is crucial for me because it reminds me that life is short, and I shouldn't waste time on unnecessary thoughts or burdens that weigh me down. It's important to prioritize what truly matters to me and let go of distractions or negative thoughts that hold me back from living authentically. Being honest with myself means taking time for self-reflection, acknowledging my strengths and weaknesses, and making choices that align with my values and goals. This mindset encourages me to live mindfully and authentically, leading to a more fulfilling and purposeful life. Letting go of unnecessary thoughts allows space for personal growth and new experiences. Sometimes, we dwell on "what ifs" even though we're not actively pursuing those possibilities. This fixation on thoughts that aren't being actualized can create a sense of being stuck and hinder our progress.

4. Uncontrollably Fond

Lastly, this drama/series can really break your heart and make you burst into tears. This drama teaches us that life is valuable, so enjoy each moment and love your family and friends. Be thankful, forgive others, and show love to those who matter to you. Let's avoid pushing people away because we might regret it later on. Instead, let's cherish our relationships and try to understand each other's feelings and perspectives. It's important to communicate openly and resolve conflicts peacefully to avoid any future regrets or misunderstandings.

'Loki' takes over: Tom Hiddleston on his new TV series and a decade in the MCU

Ten years after Hiddleston first chose chaos in Thor, Marvel’s fan favorite God of Mischief is going even bigger with his time-bending Disney+ show.

Tom Hiddleston is Loki, and he is burdened with glorious purpose: After playing Thor's puckish brother for over a decade in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, no one understands the mercurial Asgardian God of Mischief as well as the actor. He can teach an entire seminar on Loki if given the opportunity — which he actually did during pre-production on his forthcoming Disney+ show. In conversation, Hiddleston quotes lines from his MCU debut, 2011's Thor, almost verbatim, and will playfully correct you if you mistakenly refer to Asgard's Rainbow Bridge as the Bifrost, which is the portal that connects Loki and Thor's homeworld to the Nine Realms, including Midgard, a.k.a. Earth. "Well, the Bifrost technically is the energy that runs through the bridge," he says with a smile. "But nine points to Gryffindor!" And when he shows up to the photo shoot for this very digital cover, he hops on a call with our photo editor to pitch ways the concept could be even more Loki, like incorporating the flourish the trickster does whenever magically conjuring something. The lasting impression is that playing Loki isn't just a paycheck.

"Rather than ownership, it's a sense of responsibility I feel to give my best every time and do the best I can because I feel so grateful to be a part of what Marvel Studios has created," the 40-year-old Brit tells EW over Zoom a few days after the shoot and a week out from Thor's 10th anniversary. "I just want to make sure I've honored that responsibility with the best that I can give and the most care and thought and energy."

After appearing in three Thor movies and three Avengers, Hiddleston is bringing that passion to his first solo Marvel project, Loki, the House of Ideas' third Disney+ series following the sitcom pastiche WandaVision and the topical The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Led by head writer Michael Waldron (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Heels), the six-episode drama sees Hiddleston's shapeshifting agent of chaos step out from behind his brother's shadow and into the spotlight for a timey-wimey, sci-fi adventure that aims to get to the bottom of who Loki really is. "I wanted to explore slightly more complex character questions," says Waldron. "It's not just good versus bad. Is anybody all good? Is anybody all bad? What makes a hero, a hero? A villain, a villain?"

Even though Loki — who loves sowing mayhem with his illusion magic and shapeshifting, all with a major chip on his shoulder — has never been one for introspection, the idea of building an entire show around him was a no-brainer for Marvel. When asked why Loki was one of the studio's first Disney+ shows, Marvel president Kevin Feige replies matter-of-factly, "More Hiddleston, more Loki." First introduced as Thor's (Chris Hemsworth) envious brother in Kenneth Branagh's Thor, Loki went full Big Bad in 2012's The Avengers. That film cemented the impish rogue as one of the shared universe's fan favorites, thanks to Hiddleston's ability to make him deliciously villainous yet charismatic and, most importantly, empathetic. The character's popularity is one of the reasons he's managed to avoid death many times.

"He's been around for thousands of years. He had all sorts of adventures," says Feige. "Wanting to fill in the blanks and see much more of Loki's story [was] the initial desire [for the series]."

The Loki we meet on the show is not the one who fought the Avengers in 2012 and evolved into an antihero in Thor: The Dark World and Thor: Ragnarok before meeting his demise at the hands of the mad titan Thanos (Josh Brolin) in 2018's Avengers: Infinity War. Instead, we'll be following a Loki from a branched timeline (a variant, if you will) after he stole the Tesseract following his thwarted New York invasion and escaped S.H.I.E.L.D. custody during the time heist featured in Avengers: Endgame. In other words, this Loki hasn't gone through any sort of redemption arc. He's still the charming yet petulant god who firmly believes he's destined to rule and has never gotten his due.

Premiering June 9, Loki begins with the Time Variance Authority — a bureaucratic organization tasked with safeguarding the proper flow of time — arresting the Loki Variant seen in Endgame because they want his help fixing all of the timeline problems he caused while on the run with the Tesseract. So there will be time travel, and a lot more of it than in Endgame. As Loki makes his way through his own procedural, he'll match wits with new characters including Owen Wilson's Agent Mobius, a brilliant TVA analyst, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw's Judge Renslayer. The question in early episodes is whether Loki will help them or take over.

"One of the things Kevin Feige led on was, 'I think we should find a way of exploring the parts of Loki that are independent of his relationship with Thor,' or see him in a duality or in relationship with others, which I thought was very exciting," says Hiddleston, who also serves as an executive producer on the show. "So the Odinson saga, that trilogy of films, still has its integrity, and we don't have to reopen it and retell it."

Yet, in order to understand where Loki is going, it's important to see where he came from.

Hiddleston can't believe how long he and Loki have been connected. "I've been playing this character for 11 years," he says. "Which is the first time I have said that sentence, I realize, and it [blows] my mind. I don't know what percentage that is exactly of my 40 years of being alive, but it's substantial."

His time as Loki actually goes a bit further back, to 2009 — a year after Robert Downey Jr. big banged the MCU into existence with Iron Man — when he auditioned for Thor. It's no secret that Hiddleston initially went in for the role of the titular God of Thunder, but Feige and director Kenneth Branagh thought his natural charm and flexibility as an actor made him better suited for the movie's damaged antagonist. "Tom gave you an impression that he could be ready for anything, performance-wise," says Branagh, who had previously worked with him on a West End revival of Checkov's Ivanov and the BBC series Wallander. "Tom has a wild imagination, so does Loki. He's got a mischievous sense of humor and he was ready to play. It felt like he had a star personality, but he was a team player."

Hiddleston fully immersed himself in the character. Outside of studying Loki's history in the Marvel Comics, he also researched how Loki and the Trickster God archetype appeared across mythology and different cultures. "He understood that he was already in something special [and] it was a special character in a special part of that early moment in the life of the Marvel universe where [he] also needed to step up in other ways," says Branagh, who was impressed by the emotional depth Hiddleston brought to the part, especially when it came to how isolated Loki felt in the Asgardian royal family.

There was a lot riding on that first Thor feature. For one, no one knew if audiences would immediately latch onto a Shakespearean superhero movie partially set on an alien planet populated by the Norse Gods of legend. Second, it was integral to Feige's plans for the shared universe. Loki was supposed to be the main villain in The Avengers, which would not only mirror how Earth's mightiest heroes joined forces in 1963's Avengers #1 but also give Thor a believable reason for teaming up with Iron Man, Captain America (Chris Evans), and the rest of the capes. Feige first clued Hiddleston into those larger plans when the actor was in L.A. before Thor started shooting.

"I was like, 'Excuse me?' Because he was already three, four steps ahead," says Hiddleston. "That took me a few minutes to process, because I didn't quite realize how it just suddenly had a scope. And being cast as Loki, I realized, was a very significant moment for me in my life, and was going to remain. The creative journey was going to be so exciting."

Hiddleston relished the opportunity to go full villain in Avengers, like in the scene where Loki ordered a crowd to kneel before him outside a German opera house: "It's the unspoken truth of humanity, that you crave subjugation," says the Machiavellian god. "The bright lure of freedom diminishes your life's joy in a mad scramble for power, for identity. You were made to be ruled. In the end, you will always kneel."

"I just knew that in the structure of that film, I had to lean into his role as a pure antagonist," Hiddleston recalls. "What I always found curious and complex about the way Loki is written in Avengers, is that his status as an antagonist comes from the same well of not belonging and being marginalized and isolated in the first Thor film. Loki now knows he has no place in Asgard."

Loki did find a place within the audience's hearts, though. Feige was "all in" on Hiddleston as his Loki from the beginning, but even he couldn't predict how much fans would love him. Feige recalls the reaction at the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con: "Did we know that after he was the villain in two movies, he would be bringing thousands of people to their feet in Hall H, in costume, chanting his name? No, that was above and beyond the plan that we were hoping for and dreaming of." It was a dream Feige first got an inkling of a year earlier during the Avengers press tour when a Russian fan slipped past security, snuck into Mark Ruffalo's car, and asked the Hulk actor to give Hiddleston a piece of fan art she created. "That was one of the early signs there was much more happening with this quote-unquote villain."

Despite that popularity, the plan was to kill Loki off in 2013's Thor: The Dark World, but the studio reversed course after test audiences refused to believe he actually died fighting the Dark Elves. Alas, he couldn't out-illusion death forever. After returning in Taika Waititi's colorful and idiosyncratic Thor: Ragnarok, Hiddleston's character perished for real in the opening moments of Infinity War. In typical Loki fashion, before Thanos crushed his windpipe, he delivered a defiant speech that indicated he'd finally made peace with the anger he felt toward his family.

"It felt very, very final, and I thought, 'Okay, that's it. This is Loki's final bow and a conclusive end to the Odinson saga,'" says Hiddleston, who shot that well-earned death scene in 2017.

But, though he didn't know it yet, the actor's MCU story was far from over.

When Hiddleston returned to film two scenes in Avengers: Endgame in 2017, he had no idea where Loki portaled off to after snatching the Tesseract. "Where'd he go? When does he go? How does he get there? These are all questions I remember asking on the day, and then not being given any answers," Hiddleston recalls. To be fair, it's likely the Powers That Be didn't necessarily have answers then. While Feige can't exactly recall when the writers' room for Endgame first devised Loki's escape sequence, he does know that setting up a future show wasn't the primary goal — because a Loki series wasn't on the horizon just yet.

"[That scene] was really more of a wrinkle so that one of the missions that the Avengers went on in Endgame could get screwed up and not go well, which is what required Cap and Tony to go further back in time to the '70s," says Feige. Soon after that, though, former Disney CEO Bob Iger approached Feige about producing content for the studio's forthcoming streaming service. "I think the notion that we had left this hanging loose end with Loki gave us the in for what a Loki series could be. So by the time [Endgame] came out, we did know where it was going."

As for Hiddleston, he didn't find out about the plans for a Loki show until spring 2018, a few weeks before Infinity War hit theaters. "I probably should not have been surprised, but I was," says the actor. "But only because Infinity War had felt so final."

Nevertheless, Hiddleston was excited about returning for his show. He was eager to explore Loki's powers, especially the shapeshifting, and what it meant that this disruptive figure still managed to find a seat beside the gods in mythology. "I love this idea [of] Loki's chaotic energy somehow being something we need. Even though, for all sorts of reasons, you don't know whether you can trust him. You don't know whether he's going to betray you. You don't why he's doing what he's doing," says Hiddleston. "If he's shapeshifting so often, does he even know who he is? And is he even interested in understanding who he is? Underneath all those masks, underneath the charm and the wit, which is kind of a defense anyway, does Loki have an authentic self? Is he introspective enough or brave enough to find out? I think all of those ideas are all in the series — ideas about identity, ideas about self-knowledge, self-acceptance, and the difficulty of it."

The thing that truly sold Hiddleston on the show was Marvel's decision to include the Time Variance Authority, a move he describes as "the best idea that anybody had pertaining to the series." Feige and Loki executive producer Stephen Broussard had hoped to find a place for the TVA — an organization that debuted in 1986's Thor #372 and has appeared in She-Hulk and Fantastic Four stories — in the MCU for years, but the right opportunity never presented itself until Loki came along. "Putting Loki into his own procedural series became the eureka moment for the show," says Feige.

The TVA's perspective on time and reality also tied into the themes that Waldron, Loki's head writer, was hoping to explore. "Loki is a character that's always reckoning with his own identity, and the TVA, by virtue of what they do, is uniquely suited to hold up a mirror to Loki and make him really confront who he is and who he was supposed to be," says Waldron. Hiddleston adds: "[That] was very exciting because in the other films, there was always something about Loki that was very controlled. He seemed to know exactly what the cards in his hand were and how he was going to play them…. And Loki versus the TVA is Loki out of control immediately, and in an environment in which he's completely behind the pace, out of his comfort zone, destabilized, and acting out."

To truly dig into who Loki is, the creative team had to learn from the man who knows him best: Hiddleston. "I got him to do a thing called Loki School when we first started," says director Kate Herron. "I asked him to basically talk through his 10 years of the MCU — from costumes to stunts, to emotionally how he felt in each movie. It was fantastic."

Hiddleston got something out of the Loki school, too. Owen Wilson both attended the class and interviewed Hiddleston afterward so that he could better understand Loki, as his character Mobius is supposed to be an expert on him. During their conversation, Wilson pointedly asked Hiddleston what he loved about playing the character.

"And I said, 'I think it's because he has so much range,'" says Hiddleston. "I remember saying this to him: 'On the 88 keys on the piano, he can play the twinkly light keys at the top. He can keep it witty and light, and he's the God of Mischief, but he can also go down to the other side and play the heavy keys. And he can play some really profound chords down there, which are about grief and betrayal and loss and heartbreak and jealousy and pride.'" Hiddleston recalls Wilson being moved by the description: "He said, 'I think I might say that in the show.' And it was such a brilliant insight for me into how open Owen is as an artist and a performer.'"

Everyone involved is particularly excited for audiences to see Hiddleston and Wilson's on-screen chemistry. "Mobius is not unlike Owen Wilson in that he's sort of nonplussed by the MCU," says Feige. "[Loki] is used to getting a reaction out of people, whether it's his brother or his father, or the other Avengers. He likes to be very flamboyant and theatrical. Mobius doesn't give him the reaction he's looking for. That leads to a very unique relationship that Loki's not used to."

As for the rest of the series, we know that Loki will be jumping around time and reality, but the creative team isn't keen on revealing when and where. "Every episode, we tried to take inspiration from different things," says Waldron, citing Blade Runner's noir aesthetic as one example.

"Part of the fun of the multiverse and playing with time is seeing other versions of characters, and other versions of the titular character in particular," says Feige, who also declined to confirm if Loki ties into Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and/or other upcoming projects.

Making Loki was especially meaningful to Hiddleston because they shot most of it during the pandemic, in late 2020. "It will remain one of the absolute most intense, most rewarding experiences of my life," he says. "It's a series about time, and the value of time, and what time is worth, and I suppose what the experience of being alive is worth. And I don't quite know yet, and maybe I don't have perspective on it, if all the thinking and the reflecting that we did during the lockdown ended up in the series. But in some way, it must have because everything we make is a snapshot of where we were in our lives at that time."

While it remains to be seen what the future holds for Loki beyond this initial season, Hiddleston isn't preparing to put the character to bed yet. "I'm open to everything," he says. "I have said goodbye to the character. I've said hello to the character. I said goodbye to the character [again]. I've learned not to make assumptions, I suppose. I'm just grateful that I'm still here, and there are still new roads to explore."

It was just another normal school day and you were walking home on your own; since your friends were all busy today. But then, as you're walking, you suddenly feel dizzy. It's as if everything around you is deforming in some sort of way. She feels comfortable enough to vent to you though. You've seen her cry at least once, you've comforted her multiple times. You understand, you're the only one who understands. In her eyes at least.

🍵 She's definitely the type to be touchy but not full on like giving hugs. Maybe if you guys were official she would but as friends she just does small gestures. Such as putting her hand on your shoulder or holding your hands from time to time; often pulling you closer to her without even realising. It makes her feel safer in a way. It reminds her of how close you are; it reminds her that the most important person in her life is here with her.

🍵 If you ever started spending less time with her, especially because of other people, she'd definitely get emotional. As we've seen in the anime; Mami isn't really emotionally stable. So if something like this were to happen she'd instantly go into panic mode. She wouldn't get jealous, she'd get scared. Scared that you're going to leave her, just like an old "friend" of hers did in the past. So she'd ask you to talk about it. At first she seems calm and has a smile on her face but the more she goes on the more emotional she gets, even starts crying.

🍵 What would happen if you decided to leave her out of your life immediately though? Maybe you start avoiding her on purpose or you outright announce to her. Either way; it ends the same. If you avoid her she'd come up to you, maybe in an alleyway near your house or somewhere you can't back away easily. If you announce it to her what's to come would happen then and there. She's silent for a few seconds. Then she starts sobbing, panicking more than she's ever panicked before. You then attempt to walk away and for the first time in her life as a magical girl she uses her magic out of the battle.

🍵 Most of her magic is based on ribbons, so expect to wake up with a bunch of em' tied around you, keeping you in place. She's a magical girl and you're just...a normal girl/boy/person. There's nothing you can do against magic ribbons. If even Homura couldn't get out of the ribbons then there's no way you would. She'd probably try to act as if those ribbons don't exist though. As if you're just a friend, or even something more, staying over for the night. Although it's going to be a lot longer than just the night.

🍵 Keeping in mind that you're tied with a bunch of magical ribbons that get tighter the more you struggle there aren't really many ways you could misbehave. Yelling at her would be the only thing you'd be capable of doing and she could either ignore it or have a ribbon cover your mouth as well. She's trying to convince herself that what caused her to do this never happened, trying to pretend all this is normal.

🍵 Once you gain her trust she'd let you out of the ribbons. It would be quite easy, to be honest. Her entire mental stability depends on you at this point since you're the only one she has. Good luck with trying to get out of her apartment. Everything is locked and it's too high for you to jump off. If you somehow did manage to go out though... It's you against a veteran unstable teenage girl with the power to summon hundreds of rifles at once. So once again; good luck.

🍵 If you did really learn to love her she'd be so so happy, crying tears of joy even. She'd get a lot more physical as well when you're in her apartment so you'd get a lot of hugs. And free desserts. Unlike some yanderes she'd let you get out of the house; on your own as well. As long as you came back in time. You'd also be able to go to school again, although you'd spend all of your time by her side. She'd even force Kyubey to help you telepathically talk to eachother during class as well.

🍵 If anyone ever made a move on you she'd probably get between the two of you, literally, and threaten them. She'd somehow make herself seem intimidating while still sounding pretty calm and wearing a smile. If someone decided to hurt you though... Well; if they were to insult you they'd get the same treatment as making a move with you. If they actually hurt you physically...oh boy. At first it's just a playful threat. Once you leave that fake smile on her face would be gone though, replaced by a glare instead. She'd threaten the person again, this time sounding more determinated than before. She wouldn't use her magic though, she still has to keep the whole Magical Girl thing a secret after all.

🍵 When and if she learnt the truth about witches... It'd be tough. Learning that she's going to either die fighting or become what she's been fighting all this time messes her up by itself, but realising that she's never going to be with you no matter what makes it one trillion times worse. She would still do the same she did in the series. What if one day she turned into a witch and ended up hurting you? No. She'd rather end it all sooner, it was for the better. If she somehow learnt it without the Sayaka fiasco happening and the circumstances were ideal she'd send you a voicemail before ending it all. Her last goodbye.

🍵 I'd imagine her witch form to be the same but with some changes. For example; her familiars would give the people who entered the labyrinth a missing poster that read "Vidisti amica mea?" before walking them to the tea party. I can even imagine the witch taking people in hopes of finding someone one day. She can't remember anything about who it was exactly but she's just desperate to find them; maybe they'd make the tea party more fun, whoever they were.
