June 28, 1969 marked a historic turning point for contemporary LGBTQ+ rights in the United States. An all too frequent police raid on the Stonewall Inn in New York City ignited a multi-day rebellion/protest after patrons of the bar resisted the discriminatory conditions they long endured. The first pride was a peaceful protest that turned into a 5 day riot because the police tried to attack and arrest the protesters. Black trans women and other poc including Marsha P Johnson, Miss Major, and Silvia Rivera lead the lgbtq community to national recognition. It is no longer illegal to be LGBTQ. But to be black and trans puts you at highest risk of murder especially by cops. We must demand change. No freedom until we’re equal. No justice, no peace. Black lives matter. The first Pride was a riot!!!!! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈 Marsha P. Johnson was a Transgender, Black woman with HIV and without her the rights that LGBTQAAI2S peoples have today wouldn’t have happened had she not fought against police brutality and worked tirelessly to help local members of the LGBTQ+ community. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈 As well as being a leader in LGBTQ protests and rallies, she was Marsha was a prominent figure in the Drag community. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈 Unfortunately cis gender LG members of the community actively worked to push Marsha and other people like her out of the conversation, thinking it’d be “too hard” to get for them to be seen like “everyone else” if they were present in all their glory! 😞🏳️‍🌈😞 Despite this, Marsha stayed in the community, marching, organizing and caring for friends who were swallowed up in the AIDS epidemic of the 80’s. 🖤🏳️‍🌈🖤 Despite all her involvement within the community and all the joy that she brought to a space, the police initially ruled her death (her body was found floating in the Hudson) and only after massive outcry and protests, was her death changed to “unexplained drowning”!!! 😞🖤🏳️‍🌈 As of 2012 the case was reopened and remains open!!!!! I have spent all month thinking about how glad I am that Pride 2020 events have moved online to protect public health and safety while Covid-19 continues to circulate, and in recognition of the need to create better access for people of all abilities. I've also been thinking about how important it is that energy for Pride events have evolved to support Black Lives Matter, and to fight for the rights of our Trans siblings. It has furthermore been heartening to see a younger generation of queer folks get the message so loud and clear that the first pride was a riot led by Black Trans women sex workers rising up against police violence. . As a queer person of colour who experienced biophobia and femmephobia from white women while trying to come out and find community in my 20s*, I do still struggle to balance between wanting to identify myself within queer liberation, and wanting to de-center my CIS and light skin POC privileges. . I believe I've shared this gorgeous image by @micahbazant in my stories, before. Thank you to @lauras_underthere for reminding me of it today 🖤 I absolutely love that over 50,000 people in New Jersey want to replace a statue of Christopher Columbus with a statue of Martha P Johnson. I am appalled that only two days ago cops in NYC assaulted Reclaim Pride activists celebrating the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall riots. As the image reads: No Pride for some of us without liberation for all of us.
