Name: Popo
Debut: The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Popo is some tendrils, and nothing more. And that’s wonderful! There is nothing else I would add to Popo. Anatomically, at least. Let’s see how it looks in some fun accessories!
Awesome!!!
Popo is pretty much the most basic enemy possible. It moves, it causes damage on contact, it is defeated instantly by any attack, honestly not very interesting mechanically. But what IS interesting is, obviously, its design! Usually the Weakest Enemy is a pitiful little guy, maybe a little Evil looking so you know it’s a bad guy, but with a design that really conveys “this thing cannot do much damage”. Popo is not exactly that, but... I think it still does a good job as a Weakest Enemy design, actually!
It looks very soft and floppy, and moves aimlessly, which makes sense, since it doesn’t seem to have anything to see you with. It is truly just an Entity. Tentacles do look like they can Get you, but as an enemy, it can indeed Get you, so that is good. Good job, Popo!
There is also a Red Popo, and it is a bit stronger, but I do not like red as much as blue, so I am done talking about this one now.
Popo :)
What kind of creature do you think Popo is? Is this the whole thing, or is there more underneath? Merely the feeding tentacles of a burrowing echinoderm? Or maybe each Popo is many creatures, all writhing together as one? Maybe they found a Snack that they are swarming! Like a dead rat. They would probably eat a dead rat.
Popo does not overstay its welcome. It shows up, dazzles the crowd, collects its paycheck, and goes home. There is not all that much to Popo. And that is fine! We love Popo.
