TIL a startling number of British theatre critics don't think Assassins is about White America.

Assassins: a play by white Americans about white Americans killing white Americans for white Americans in order to get what they feel white Americans are entitled to.

#theatre #i'm not saying that the show demands an all white cast #i think it could be cast and staged in a way that calls even greater attention to the whiteness of the american dream #and the resentment and gun culture and celebrity worship that motivated the assassins #actors of color playing white characters could make whiteness impossible to ignore #but that's not what chichester did #the assassins were audience plants who were assigned the role of a particular assassin and that was that #and i haven't seen a single review yet that mentions race #if you have please share #the radio silence about casting actors of color as fromme and zangara and czolgosz is destabilizing #i'm questioning if i exist in a separate reality #i know not everything is about white americans but c'mon #this feels like one thing

see the thing is the fnaf movie really wants me to root for mike and abby's relationship and care about them and sure i can play along. but my emotional investment in them is severely hampered by the fact that we never really see them... having fun together? the first scene of them interacting is them being annoyed/frustrated with one another, mike rolling his eyes at abby's talk of her "friends", abby resenting him for that. abby's teacher says abby loves mike, but besides the pictures she draws, we never really get to see that for ourselves. the one moment between them that made me go "aww" was when abby said she hated jane and mike said "it's funny how we finally agree on something" with tears in his eyes. other than that, they have their extremely hurried emotional moment during the climax that's not really given any time to breathe ("i love you too, mike, but we should probably go now" wasn't. really anything), and one or two bits where abby's having fun around mike, but not really with him. i really want to believe they're a sweet sibling duo who love each other, but the movie doesn't seem all that interested in establishing that.

#fnaf movie #like. it's a fun movie sure. it was nice to the fans. but it's not that GOOD. #if fnaf the game series didn't already exist- if this movie came out as a totally original standalone horror film- #it would flop. it can't stand on its own as a movie. it's built entirely on the pre-existing fanbase. #like it's extremely well-made and the casting is great and everyone does a wonderful job #and i LOVED the opening credits sequence i thought it was a lovely nod to the 8-bit lore minigames #but the fact is it's less a movie and more one big in-joke. #again. doesn't mean i didn't like it. i've seen it twice now in theatres and i'd like to see it again. #but the people calling it a cinematic masterpiece... yeah i don't get them lol

thought id update to say; i survived opening night!!! and not only that, it went REALLY fucking well, and people seemed to REALLY REALLY like it omfg... god this is so crazy

#i was literally holding the script in a bigass binder for almost the entire show (sparing only the parts where i had to BULLFIGHT) #(bc i needed two hands -- one for the cape & one for the banderilla.)(yall i had to learn how to BULLFIGHT TANGO & SWORDFIGHT. in TWO DAYS) #but the audience said afterwards it was like i wasnt even on-book; they hardly noticed it was there??!! #yall this is my real life rn. im failing my classes but yknow what?? #i can pull it together enough to emergency understudy in a highly physical show 2 days before opening even with a script ive never SEEN #and apparently we made people fucking CRY. HOLY SHIT!!! HOLY SHIT #this playwright is just. incredible. the script is INSANE. YES it's polite to keep wearing them if you can*, we get very close to the performers and each other sometimes and you don't know who is vulnerable or who has vulnerable loved ones

how is it 2023 and people still aren't getting this, if you are able to wear a covid mask then it is a very tiny thing to do in order to ensure a little extra protection for the people who might need it

I just went to see this production of mean girls from this amateur theatre group my cousin is part of (she was backstage for this one) and !!! it was so freaking good I forgot these weren't professionals. ESPECIALLY the girl playing cady was phenomenal and the regina and janis and her friend were also fantastic !!

anyways, SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL ARTISTS !!! ALWAYS !!!!
