Must-read Destiel fics - my superduper Nov. 5th rec list

Three years ago, on the blessed day of November 5th, 2020, I had:

never seen an episode of SPN,

only had a vague inkling of what the two pale coconuts were on about,

and I hee-heed and ha-had with the rest of Tumblr about the love confession scene and the Internet errupting in an unparalleled craze

At first I thought, that's it.

Then ... I got curious. I watched some YouTube Destiel supercuts. I read some fic (I think @andhumanslovedstories beautiful Cas/OC fic was my entry point?). I read meta. I watched some more YouTube scene packs. I read even more fic. I watched some of S4, some of S1, some random fan fav episodes. And then Destiel lodged itself so deeply, thouroughly into my brain that it took over and hasn't relinquished control in the last two years. The most tenacious, pervasive brain worm to date.

This ship got it all, and this fandom got it all, and there's such delightful, powerful, batshit crazy, romantic, expertedly crafted fanfic out there, it's like being a starving child in the world's biggest candystore.

So without further ado, here's some of my very favorite fics from this infinite trove, with all my thanks to the wonderful writers who keep delighting and awing me with their dedication and craft. There'll of course be some recency bias at play but you can browse my bookmarks over here to chose from over 100 excellent and well-curated SPN stories.

Wildly romantic fics that warm you up from the inside.

It Won't Be Perfect by someonetoanyone (10K words) Summary: Dean daydreams about what it'd be like to let himself love Cas freely.

Why I love it: the humor, the spot-on characterizations, and the quintessential late season Destiel-ness of being so deeply love with your best friend that it's too big to actually do anything about. Just. So warm.

Rock Lobster by Ginger Fail (13K) Summary: Cas decides that the lobsters Dean planned to cook need to get back home. Impromptu beach vacation ensues!

Why I love it: This road trip story is fresh and invigorating like a sea breeze! Fun, entertaining and full of deep, deep fondness.

Seek to Know You Better by ahurston (32K)

Summary: On a road trip, Dean and Cas play the 36 Questions That Lead To Love.

Why I love it: They’re so deliberatedly, carefully starting a relationship here. They try so hard to bridge the gaps and meet each other halfway. A very mature take on love that feels nourishing.

samson went back to bed by piesexuality (9k, @twoheadedcas) Summary: Cas strikes a deal with Chuck - keeping his family together comes at the price of their free will.

Why I love it: What if Cas got his revenge for the Mala'ak box? What if love came at the price of everything you've been fighting for? What if a story twisted the knife oh so sweetly? Each word of this one lands a punch. Made me insane in the best of ways (cue pinned fanart).

In sickness by @saintedcastiel (41K) Summary: S4 redux but Castiel has a fetish: giving Dean the sniffles.

Why I love it: This one is soooo. Can barely find words for it. It taps into Cas' early season alienness and psychosexual obsession with Dean, brilliantly demonstrates Casdean vs Samruby parallels, and each word is just. Perfect. ARGH!

so much smoke in a hall full of mirrors by AreYouReady (6K, @autisticandroids ) Summary: Godstiel is losing his heavenly war. Crowley provides a compliant Dean-doll for him to release his frustrations upon.

Why I love it: Urgh, this one is sooo dark. Taps into the scary, intimidating and alien aspects of Godstiel so well. Gore, consent and psychosexual issues galore. Delicious.

Special mention: In a Parked Car, Exhuming Ophelia by @an-android-in-a-tutu (17K). Still need to comment properly ;)

💣CATEGORY: EMOTIONAL WRECKING BALLS💣

Angsty fics that tear you to pieces to remake you better.

What Used To Be Mine by someonetoanyone (48K words) Summary: Dean never makes his apology prayer in Purgatory - Cas dies, Dean mourns.

Why I love it: Oh god, this is a heavy hitter. Just, straight up insurmontable grief, packaged in poetic, raw language to make you shed tears and tears. Loved it so much.

Ignite your bones By ilovehowyouletmefall (67K, @angelinthefire) Summary: Dean accepts Chuck's deal: killing Sam to save the world.

Why I love it: Cruuuuel cruel premise for a story that doesn’t pull its punches. It gets dark in Dean’s head and everyone around him suffers. Wonderfully written. The ending set my brain on fire.

Right Where you Left Me by outdean (93K, @armandgender)

Summary: Cas comes back from the Empty after 10 years to find Dean married to another man.

Why I love it: This one is a riiiide. When grief has become a part of you but your love comes back… When you return from the dead and have to carve a new space into the world for yourself... nothing is easy here, but the emotions are INTENSE. Also, autistic!Cas for the win.

Special mention: Who Ya Gonna Call? by saintedcastiel (50K) and Clear skies in spring by enochianprayer (WIP)

Expansive, wild adventures with lots of ups and downs

Spirit of the West by teen_dean (140K, @urne-buriall)

Summary: An 18y old Dean grew up on a horse farm – cue veterinarian Castiel. The summer of a lifetime ensues.

Why I love it: So this is one of my very favorite stories, ever ever, and I cannot recommand enough to immediatedly suscribe to the author’s Substack to be able to follow it in „real time“ next summer. It’s cinematic, rich, full of darkness and light, it’s everything a story can aspire to, I’m just. I just really love it.

Second Verse, Same as The First by LaLaCat1 (135K)

Summary: Endverse!Cas is sent back to the start of S1 and is determined to make things right this time round.

Why I love it: a desperate and badass Cas, unfridging everyone, a thrilling plot, moments of awesome for the entire cast, gripping action scenes, a romance for the ages… this is a genuinely amazing story.

back road, black road by eden22 (167K)

Summary: 18y old Sam gets kidnapped by Hell on his way to Stanford. Dean tries to deal.

Why I love it: So this one’s not Destiel-centric but does have wonderful Destiel moments. It’s also very heavy on the gore and the angst (NOT for the faint of stomach), but expertly crafted, fascinating and frankly it deserves more love. Held my breath for half the read and never knew where it’d take me.

Special mention: It's The End Of The World (As We Know It) by tiamatv (140K)

Why I love it: Just. Late season Dean being deranged about Cas’ sexuality while everyone watches on in utter confusion. Equally hilarious and deeply moving

From deduction, we can tell Dr. Kel isn't a normal human, quite special indeed, he can eat a lot of bad foods and not get hurt from this, decomposing deers, raw eggs, bugs, and a lot more.

Dr. kel is stronger than many humans (can chuck a 400-pound atv with ease, survive falls and tumbles that would break human bones), its obvious Dr. kel isn't human to a degree. First, who and why?

The most viable options are arirals. Could be some test of sorts, to see if ariral could mate with humans and what the offspring would look like (it's a viable option, I'm sorry), or perhaps Dr. kel is the victim of alien abduction and genetic modification. All we know is that arirals had something to do with it, and arirals have become more familiar to earth than we think. As we can tell by the poster in the base, the previous inhabitants have seen warp arrows. And want to believe.

But why is Dr kel part ariral?... we have a few reasons.

1: As I said, perhaps an ariral mated with a human, for two reasons: because they were in love, and they are testing if it was possible to have offspring with a human. (It's viable, I'm sorry)

2: as we know, their medical system and science are advanced! Far beyond us. But, let's be honest, would they be greedy like us? They do have corruption in their government, so the medical care is probably corrupted, too. And expensive. And arirals are poisonous to humans! Requiring a vacation to help us adapt to them. But, if a human was part ariral, they'd be immune to an extent. Right? So, it could be Dr. kel is a bridge for money, less cash for creating the vaccine, and paying to get it. Plus, it would help create a connection between human and ariral. Dr. kel could be a future ambassador. And if the mating thing is right, these arirals at the array, could be people sent to study them, or one scientist and a parent.

Or, if the genetics manipulation theory is correct, the arirals who are at the array are both scientist and are testing his durability, strength, and agility (explaining the 'pranks' they play), which makes sense, because they seemingly are both talls, and when they push Dr kel, they survive and with little to no bruises (tall arirals are 8× stronger then humans), they also leave ariral food for Dr kel, such as the purple fruit, which shows the genetic manipulation does have limits.

From both theories, they both can either be right, or im batshit insane! Either way I'm for it!

Now, does Dr kel know they are an ariral?..

This is mainly for the ariral parent theory, but if ya squint those eyes, it could fit the genetics manipulation theory.

Well, Dr. kel is a human who willingly went to the array, which is seemingly total isolation from humanity, and abolace that has claimed many human lives! And with Dr ena as their friend, ena has told Dr. kel probably, and wants Dr. kel to back out of it! But Dr. Kel wants to go here for some reason! We all know Dr. bao doesn't care if Dr. kel dies. It's just a little more paperwork for a weak for him! So, Dr. kel is purposely self isolating away from humans and friends. It's possible his parent told him to keep his strange tendencies to himself (ariral parent theory) because the big bad government would take them away if Dr. kel didn't keep it a secret! And so, Dr. kel is probably a little paranoid still of humans, childhood trauma? And we do see that Dr. kel is traumatized a little or paranoid, at least.

It's not a truly perfect theory, but if any writers out their take my ideas, go ahead and make something magical! I might try to as well-

Demo would get into pyrotechnics for a while, (shocker I know, but bare with me) he'd find himself setting up fireworks shows, making fireworks, teaching safety courses and all that fun stuff, but I don't think he'd be fulfilled in the same way being a merc would. He'd find himself being bored with the monotony of it all, only doing it for the money. After a while of this he'd finally just say fuck it, and try and look for other work opportunities, found an animal shelter in desperate need of new hires, submitted his application, and with in two weeks had become absolutely enthralled with his new job. He finds out he loves working with animals! He makes friends with every animal in the shelter right away, and gets a good chunk of them adopted each year or so.

Engie would have most likely gone on to become a very successful engineer. Shocker, I know. He would have probably specialized in biomedical engineering. I think he'd go in with no particular job in mind, but then would be introduced into the idea of building prosthetics and become a prosthetist. He likes being able to help people with his creations. (MINI HEACANON / STORY) The first time he ever made a prosthetic was for a little kid who lost his leg due to a car crash. He was super traumatized from the accident and refused to let anyone near him, Engie spent about a year working with the kid to, one be able to measure and fit him for his prosthetic, and two, to just make the kid smile and make him less scared. When the job was done the kid was so happy, grinning ear to ear, he hugged Engie and was literally crying out of joy, that's when Engie knew he loved his job 😭

Heavy has a doctorate in Russian literature, so I'd assume he'd go into the teaching field with that as his specialty. He'd find a university in need of a professor and work with students to help them better themselves. He just likes being able to share his experiences and perspective with those who want to learn. Very much a "Tuesday's With Morrie" type of teacher. Will literally do anything for his students by the way. He love each year he spends teaching, also loves hearing from his students after they graduate. Really just wants to make an impact on peoples lives anyway he can. He'd probably end up being a writer if he couldn't go into teaching for some reason. He'd write fiction mainly, maybe some life experiences too, for the same reasons above.

Medic would have found a way to get his medical license back, legally or illegally (most likely the latter). And went on to continue practicing medicine, most likely in a country with more lax laws on human experimentation. If that failed, the local morgue is always hiring graveyard shifts, and when no one really cares too much about what happens to the corpses, Medic would find ways to keep himself very entertained. I also think he could be content working as a librarian! I don't know, like the gap between librarian and doctor is huge but I can just imagine him and Archimedes running a little library together, (Kind of like uh Blue and Linda from Rio, I'm really pulling out random media this prompt, 😭) I just feel like even though he's batshit insane nine times out of ten he can still enjoy a quiet, peaceful life if he wanted too. Probably still does a bit medical stuff on the side though, you just can't stop him.

Scout is another case of me being unsurprising. He'd be a baseball star. It's really a toss-up on whether he gets super famous or just enjoys quiet success. If he's super famous you bet he's signing contracts for advertisements and other things you'd expect multimillionaires to be doing (He'd also be so thrilled to be a multimillionaire he'd be giving his mom her dream life) and just generally enjoying the fame. If he didn't make it into the big leagues, he'd still be successful in minor leagues. I'll even go as far as to say that even if he didn't make it big or even semi big, he'd become a coach little league/ high school /college and love it. Honestly, he would cry if one of the kids he coached went pro one day. (Maybe a Twitch streamer would also fit, but that's silly, right?)

Sniper has always been into wildlife photography. He absolutely loves animals. He's naturally good at photography. I think him having good aim and a steady hand are a mix of a natural talent and years of training. His years of training would have just gone into photography instead of, you know. He gets very good very quickly, takes pictures you'd see hung up as decoration pieces, and definitely had a fair share of curious animals wandering up to him to check out his work. For a guy who loves animals, he's living the dream. Haz had a few less than steller run-ins during his time, but generally appreciates being able to enjoy nature and animals as part of his job.

Spy being an actor would come naturally for him. He's great at switching his style, mood, character, etc. So he'd naturally be interested in a job where that skill would be valuable, then he finds out about how much money he can make off of acting and just goes straight in. I think he would end up being a really popular actor, people liking him in almost any role he plays, and would generally have little to no hater or bad press. He loves going over every new script and building up his character in his mind, then giving them a place off the page. He also loves going to fancy parties, so... Also, the first time he got a bad/negative review or comment on his acting, he cried lmao.

Soldier would so be a historian. Like, hands down, only job I think he could have outside of being a merc. He can rant for hours about American history and knows so much about other countries too due to their involvement with America and a general curiosity, that he'd be a perfect to teach about history in museums, classrooms, or even just uploading videos online. Just put someone who needs to learn about history of any kind in front of him, and they'll learn more in the time with him than they ever have. Also! I'm not sure what these people are called, and I'm way too tired to look it up, but I think that Soldier would help new immigrants with leaning English and with getting their citizenship. Solider would also help refugees. Also also, he'd hold support groups for veterans.

Pyro is normally headcanoned as a fire fighter or ex-fire fighter I'm pretty sure, but I think it's easy to forget that while Pyro likes fire, they like making firsvl, you know what else they like? Making art! So naturally, being a glassblower would be a great fit for Pyro. They love the job! The molten glass is mesmerizing to them. The artistic freedom is liberating. It's all just so great to them. They make a lot of flame themed pieces that and animal themed pieces. They mainly do pieces and sell them at markets instead of taking commissions for them. They're super happy with this life and have multiple pieces of their work displayed in their home. They sometimes get this feeling of missing something, like a vague memory, but they just continue to make new art to fix that, but oddly enough, they end up reminding them more of those distant memories. I wonder what that's about.

Some things that people don’t talk about often from Total Drama that I think the characters are definitely still healing from:

(Let me preface this by saying, if this were NOT an absolutely batshit insane animated show, I’d have much different feelings about it, but I have to understand that this is all fictional and animated. That being said, even then, I shouldn’t look so far into these characters’ trauma but, who’s to stop me?)

Courtney has a multitude of traumatic moments from the show, but I’d like to point out the fact that Heather WHIPPED her multiple times during the dogsled race in World Tour. I’ll be following her up in a whole other post, strictly dedicated to her.

DJ and his “curse” made me feel awful for him, and genuinely love his character even more. He didn’t deserve to go through all that emotional turmoil like he did, just because of a mummy dog in Egypt.

Bridgette and the way Geoff was absolutely horrid to her. She deserves so much better. (And of course how she got stuck to a pole, and thrown out of the plane with it still STUCK.)

Lindsay being thrown around like a rag doll by Heather throughout season 1. And the way she was only seen as the “token dumb blonde” by almost all her teammates in every single season she was in…

Izzy and her mental state is severely overlooked. Comparing her to the way the fandom treats characters like Mike, Trent, Courtney, and, Gwen. She needs help and support as well. As “crazy” as the writers made her, she had some redeeming qualities, and was an interesting character who deserved to be treated better by her teammates.

Dawn being completely and utterly blindsided by her team despite their lack of evidence to prove her truly guilty, all the while everyone on the show treated her like shit.

TRENT and his OCD Jesus Christ the way the writers handled this has pissed me off since I was literally like, 6 years old. (As someone who has OCD.) As much as I love Gwen, she could’ve been so much more understanding and caring toward Trent despite their rocky relationship. She could have been so much better and I believe they could’ve have a good (ish) ending if not for the writers…

Tyler and the way he was so often physically injured, to the point of being in a wheelchair in one episode of the aftermath. I guess you can say almost every character has been injured once or twice, but Tyler stands out to me since everyone sees him as the “athletic” type, and not as someone who would often get hurt, even if his character trope is the clumsy jock.

Sierra being horribly burned by the jet explosion. In all reality, I can’t imagine how grueling her recovery had to have been, all while still dealing with the mental pain of how she was treated by Heather the whole season, and everything else of course. (I like to pretend she got slightly better over the years and Cody was there for her during her recovery, and that they became pretty good friends. If any consolation.)

Alejandro, like Sierra, suffered intense burns after his incident with the volcano post S3. And the fact that he was unwillingly trapped in a robot suit for a year had to have given him some issues. I mean, they actually talk about it in the show, but not to a satisfactory extent. (I also believe him and Sierra bonded after their recovery.)

Mike and the way he was treated by Scott the entirety of ROTI. And Cameron… despite his caring nature, wasn’t the biggest of help for him during the season. (Though I love Cameron, he wasn’t great to Mike about his D.I.D) And then of course, the way he was imprisoned in his own mind for the second half of All-Stars by Mal. (Also, never will forgive the writers for how they handled D.I.D representation. I pretend the reset button does not exist.)

Zoey as much as she loves Mike, you have to admit she was mistreated during their time in ROTI. She was such a standup girl for him against Scott, and was willing to do anything for him. (Which I admire about her!!) But it doesn’t eliminate the fact that she was also traumatized in her own way by everyone around her and Mal.

Dave. (Before you all begin to riot, hear me out.) I believe he probably suffered from SEVERE emotional attachment issues, and Sky was someone he could connect with, someone that he could see a decent relationship with despite their aggravation towards each other. I think despite his flaws, Sky could’ve been a bit more gentle with letting him down.

Leshawna. I will never shut about how she deserves to win a season. She was a full team player, and despite all she did, she was constantly oppressed by her teammates and mocked for being a bit bossy. (I mean, rightfully so, who else was gonna help their team win? Besides Heather maybe…) She really had such a great personality and cared deeply about Harold and her friends. I think she deserved better all around, especially in season 1.

Topher seem like he had an extreme case of “rich boy syndrome” to me, from a bystander point of view. And maybe a mild case of impersonation issues, along with self esteem problems, which could be a very logical and realistic explanation to why he connected to Chris so heavily, as someone to look up to. I think the way he was voted off was pretty unfair, but I also believe he could’ve handled himself in the game better.

Samey. I feel like I shouldn’t have to say much. She was constantly put down by her sister, all her life. And in the show? The same. Not even getting to be her own person and reduced to a mere extension of Amy.

Cody probably (definitely…) has some trauma related to being stalked by Sierra throughout S3. I will never blame him for the way he EVER felt about her, or talked to her at certain points of the show. Because his personality and the way he acted showed that he did really care for her in the end.

Heather was raised in such a toxic environment, that Total Drama was such an intense culture shock for her that it practically took her entire career on the show for her to learn about other people that were vastly different from her outside of her circle (Saying this because of her parents, and the fact she was probably raised in a rich neighborhood to begin with, so she may not have ever been used to seeing less fortunate or different people.) And I highly doubt that her parents were there for her as a kid. So when Alejandro, Gwen, Courtney, Owen, and others showed her genuine friendship and kindness, she didn’t know how to react.

Other slightly notable moments that are worth mentioning:

Scarlett and her decent into madness.

Beth and the way she was treated based on her looks in S1.

Shawn and his completely unmentioned OCD and extreme anxiety and addiction for apocalypse planning.

Justin being overly (Dare I say objectified?) due to his good looks, and basically being reduced to that.

Brick being a military kid, probably trying his entire life to compensate for the fact that his father may not have been around much.

Jo and Brick’s rivalry challenging her superiority complex, she deserves to be told she’s doing well, and that someone is proud of her.

Noah’s smarts were not NEAR appreciated enough after all he helped his team with throughout the show, and how he was a laughing stock of his team more often than not.

your first thought being that you want to kill a real person who died fighting the nazis for having a “meaningless” death is absolutely batshit. you cannot be surprised people are not happy with you when that’s your opening musing. it’s outright disrespectful and even if you were joking…jokes are supposed to be funny.

i think i’ve already explained my stance here, but i guess i’ll use this ask to go over it civilly and with the detail that it deserves, since apparently we are making this into a big deal.

• this was not ever meant to be seen as my mota thesis. after watching the ep, i had already posted a long thread on twitter explaining my thoughts, as well as talked to my other friends who were watching the show and aired my grievances to them. that joke should not have been the first thing that i posted to tumblr, but in my mind, it was supplemental to the many thoughts that i’d already typed out and shared.

• i did not anticipate that post being seen by that many people outside of my small circle, many of whom had already heard my full thoughts on twitter & discord and wouldn’t have misconstrued my meaning and frustration with the show. as i’ve said since, #mota is my personal tag for the show, i didn’t think people were using it as a main tag and i would have never tagged it with that if i knew that people outside of my followers, and the niche that i’ve created on this blog, would see it.

• the joke itself is being misinterpreted entirely and i know it’s not like. funny, but my intention with it was never even to be disrespectful to the irl curtis biddick who i have no personal qualms with LMAO. it is not his fault that he died the way that he died, but it IS the show writer’s fault for not doing anything to make that death meaningful and impactful to the television series that is supposed to be entertaining. i misspoke when i said the the real life curt’s death was meaningless (obviously bombing the nazis is important) but i genuinely only said all of that to point out my own deranged frustration with barry’s role in the show. i don’t actually wish any harm to the real curtis biddick, the joke is supposed to be on me for being insane enough to want to warp time and space to create a better story for curtis because the mota writers in eighty years are not going to do him any favors when telling his story. which of course gives me more (& better) barry content. which is all i ever wanted from this fucking show.

• i made that post in a moment of frustration and my anger that should have gone toward the writers (and did in other forums) definitely hit the wrong target here. i understand why people are mad about it but i think it’s been such a disproportionate response to me making an unfunny joke in the tags of a post that was taken out of context and only my friends were supposed to see. if you don’t like what i’m posting then ignore it?? if you actually find it offensive, then tell me to my face so we can talk about it?? idk. dragging me thru the mud in front of ur followers is so weird !

(your post-trimax kv fic is also one of my favs in this fandom, GREAT shit right there) i would be curious to hear your thoughts on vash and how he experiences/deals with his trauma in trimax (PTSD/C-PTSD, rem and tesla, guilt from the big fall, the separation between him and knives, aftermath from the July/fifth moon incidents, plant body horror and all that jazz) i know there's a lot sjdfksjh you don't have to touch on all of those points but only if ur interested ofc!

anyway. trauma, huh? i think i usually gloss over talking about vash's trauma only because it feels so clear to me. knives's is so easily misinterpreted for the purposes of lambasting him or woobifying him but vash wears all that pain on his sleeve. uh. literally. because of the. the arm thing. but the way he deals with it is so!! it's /so./ 

short answer: he runs away. all the time. 

long answer: it's his coolest thematic motif because his name is "the stampede," right, a horde of animals sprinting for their fuckin lives because something behind them spooked them so bad they're going to trample everything in their path just to get away. and occasionally, when he feels he /really really has to,/ because of a sense of sheer responsibility, he runs toward the Bad Things. said bad thing is usually knives because vash believes that his brother is inherently his responsibility, and also all the guilt from the big fall. that's trauma, as you mentioned, that manifests over and over again as soul-wrenching guilt. 

the reason vash fashions himself into gunsmoke's friendly neighborhood jesus figure is because he's tortured by that guilt, especially in stampede, because of that lil addition the writers made to the canon: that vash is partially responsible for letting his brother Commit Atrocities. and that's something that clearly drives him batshit insane. how can he laugh when the suffering of a whole planet sits partially on his shoulders? how can he eat when they're starving? how dare he /not/ be their meat shield over and over again when he's the reason they need one in the first place? 

his trauma drives him to atone for a sin that can't really be atoned for and can't really be ascribed solely to him. he was, of course, 1 year old (mentally ~6?) when he helped knives perpetuate the fall. it's an impossible, Sisyphean endeavor, but because he's functionally immortal and never /really/ had a chance to grow up properly, he's going to fuckin try. 

mf i'm running out of characters here this is evil!! anyway. i think his guilt about rem is why he develops such an, uh, oedipus complex about her that has even wolfwood thinking he's talking about a dead girlfriend. and i think with tesla he just. put her out of his mind. how the fuck do you even begin to cope with a sister dismembered and brutally killed, a sister kept in a jar, a sister you never knew you had or got the chance to love. i think vash just avoids it. it's too big, the ramifications too Much, when all he wants to do is move on and live his life. 

(in contrast, nai is forever stuck in that room, in that horrifying moment. he can't escape it even as vash runs and runs and runs away.)

The same thing happens post-July. Post-fifth moon. Vash sees the horror he’s wrought (that knives has wrought) and goes. Fuck this shit i’m outta here. Fight or flight more like flight or flight even fuckin faster amirite. But knives always catches up to him in the end, is the thing—nai is the physical symbol of his trauma, the narrative vehicle for vash’s pain. He is everything that has traumatized vash made flesh. It’s part of what makes every fight between the two so gripping, imo. By overcoming knives, by putting his brother in the ground, that’s him trying to atone and appease the guilt. This is vash overcoming his trauma. Trying to, anyway. 

Which is what also makes the ending of trimax so. So utterly vash. Because he says fuck this there’s another way, and it happens in a split second when he has to decide if he really and truly wants his brother dead. His trauma!! Does he want to overcome it like this!! With violence and blood and the corpse of nai rotting in the ground!! 

No. the answer’s no. 

He saves knives. He declares that even though nai has done all of these things to him, he still doesn’t have it in him to kill his brother. And that’s a way of coping with trauma, too, isn’t it? The declaration that you won’t let it rule you. Won’t let it dictate what you do anymore, how you live your life. It makes me so, so fuckin emotional ;-; 

Anyway, thanks for the ask! Didn’t touch on the plant body horror as much because i haven’t. Uh. read enough of trimax to properly talk about all that. My reading order is a little unhinged. Hope it satisfied regardless <3

a lot less cruel; shows genuine regret over her actions

refused to explode the ninja in ep 14 which led to the overlord replacing her with clouse (yes. clouse is here) as his second in command

some shit happens with pythor and harumi finds out that he freed the great devourer. harumi gets pissed and decides to betray the overlord

instead of lloyd escaping on his own harumi helps free him and they escape the temple together. emotional conversation ensues. harumi officially leaves the council and becomes an ally

shes down fighting with the main gang during the climax instead of at the overlord’s floating island thing

after helping to rebuild the monastery she pulls a garmadon and goes off on her own to go on a journey of healing and self-reflection or whatever

or she goes to jail and then goes on a journey of healing and self-reflection or whatever. consequences babeyyyyy

i mean i could also just keep her as a villain

i feel like that would be a lot easier. not rewriting a lot here since keeping her evil takes way less effort than giving her a legitimate redemption arc

pt 2 your writing????? i like it??? like lets be real this is a batshit insane plot but also you're doing an insanely good job keeping it? believeable? i'm down to clown i'm with it sometimes i read these aus and i'm like okay. we need to take a step back. this is a bit fantasy land right here. but like you've got me HOOKED i gotta know where we're going next, i can see the logical reasoning and the like, the emotions that are getting in the way of sound logical reasoning. and also most importantly it's highly entertaining like we're in the s tier of drama here, you can't really pile any more on top of what we're already unpacking 😂😂😂

S tier drama is correct. Even the book that inspired DLMLU is way more tame than this, at least I think it is I never finished it. Don't underestimate my ability to make things way worse because I can and will. Like in that book, the cousin stole mc's crush/ childhood friend from mc and then ended up cheating on him and marrying the guy she cheated with and invited her cousin whose she's fat shamed her entire life and said something like "you don't need a plus one because you're single" and she's like "actually, I'm dating your ex and we would love to be at your wedding" And I took that that simple fake dating plot and made it 100 times messier and we still have so much more to unpack!

Not only is DLMLU realistic, the bat shit nature is what's keeping everyone hooked and the fact that they want Bai and Chan to rot in hell while Felix and Y/n dance happily ever after over their graves. And while that's a believe and probable ending that everyone is expecting, it's just as easy for me to make Y/n end up with Chan because we can see how whipped Y/n is for Chan and some people do unfortunately end up with their toxic exes. And the exciting part it, none of you know which one I'm going to pick and you all have this need to see how it's going to end.

Disclaimer for anyone who is going to read below the cut, I'm not shitting on any fic writer at all. I'm just talking from experience as a seasoned fic writer.

But my main thing when writing, and reading, is that I love believability. Realistic fiction is my shit. Like, even when I'm writing fantasy, I need everything to be as realistic as possible. It's why I take so long to write, because I have to sit back and look at the situation and think "I'm not sure this works in this context" or "this doesn't make sense anymore." DLMLU already has a batshit plotline like you said, but readers still needs to be read this and be like, "oh yeah, that could happen." I spend a lot of time thinking about how to make everything connect like a beautiful puzzle.

Yesterday's chapter especially took a lot of planning because I had to do some mental math and realized that I fucked up the timeline a bit before I managed to fix everything. But that meant I had to get rid of some of my fantasyland details like Bai's engagement ring being Y/n's and the fact that Chan and Bai only had a one night stand.

I get the part of writing where you have so many ideas that you need to put them all down in one story, but yeah sometimes it does come out of left field. One thing I've learned in my 10+ years as a writer is that you need to be flexible. I understand being married to an idea but stories change and you have to learn to let go of a plot line or a small detail and go with the flow. Save those ideas for another story even. I'm a firm believer of believability over creativity.

Finally able to organize my thoughts on the blue beetle movie. so here they are:

-I think the concept of a destined chosen hero is antithetical to jaime reyes as a character. khaji da is not some heavensent agent of destiny, they’re a weapon of mass destruction developed by a colonial empire and sent to mass enslave other planets. The reason jaime is blue beetle as opposed to anyone else is mostly chance, and the fact that jaime happened to be the first person khaji da came into contact with that they didn’t find repulsive, hence them “choosing” him

-I like that they live on el paso street, that was cute

-I like that they made jaime’s little sister a cynical pessimist to counteract jaime’s glittering optimism. Also she’s goth a+

-the fact that jaime attended gotham university not only sent me into hysterics but is continuing to haunt me. Jaime reyes gotham u pre law graduate. Whew

-I was really surprised when they announced this movie because Whatever section of the dc company is in charge of greenlighting these movies seem rather attached to gen 1, year 1 origin stories. we’ve had Two (2) movies about year 1 batman in the past decade, not to mention man of steel and the wonder woman movie taking place during ww1 etc. they’re not even touching the gen 2 sidekicks let ALONE gen 3, so when I saw the blue beetle movie was about jaime and not ted kord I was pogging. However, adapting a Generation Three hero’s origin story into a self-contained story that Actively shies away from the context of the wider dcu seems to be an exercise in futility, because when my father and I watched it he came out so confused as to what had happened in that movie that I spent 30 minutes explaining infinite crisis to him in an attempt to make sense of the movie’s allergy to exposition. while I’m not expecting an adaptation of jaime to, like, completely adapt the utter insanity that is infinite crisis, I do think that the way they went about it ultimately harmed the film more than anything else. while a bit more boring, I think yjtv did a better job by just having khaji da break tf out of their cage and latch onto jaime as a means of escape. It makes more sense than couching the whole movie in a really weirdly unsubtle jesus metaphor

-when George lopez said “batman’s a fascist!” I scream laughed

-I liked that jaime spent the whole time haggardly being like NO MURDER while his entire family was so Utterly down for murder. Truly that is the vibe of the reyes family

-anyway the movie did tackle things that comics, I think, would never be able to. discussions of class and race that blunt would get shut down in (modern) comics, so I enjoyed them taking this opportunity to go there. I liked how believably the reyes family acts like a family, from how they smoothly interact with one another, reference things together, reference past events and even have, you know, thoughts and feelings about their place in their family. jaime’s always been an outlier in comics for having a family that isn’t dead, but I think comics will always struggle to portray a family that Feels like a family (because the writers will always be bogged down by portraying people other than the heroes are surface level cardboard cutouts) so having actual actors take that out of their hands was cool

-“it’s like batman’s stuff but shittier” is the greatest thing jaime’s ever almost said

-I didn’t like the romance subplot

-How did they manage to make one of the most batshit, buckwild and whacky origin stories and make it into a cookie-cutter superhero movie with a bland social justice flavoring. Jaime spends half his comic fighting with an alien parasite on his back, getting mindcontrolled by said alien parasite, fighting robots and Going Into Space To Topple An Alien Colonial Empire and this movie was just so. Predictable. yeah ok he’s the chosen one who’s hunted for his chosen status dead dad become one with your destiny beat the bad guy who isn’t bad so he can beat the bad guy who is. Yeah. Ok man

1. Gai - Jetman

Peak archetypal Inoue scumbag. He's a creep he's pathetic he's deeply repressed in multiple ways but most importantly he's cool as fuck. Him and Ryu have the most yaoi dynamic that has ever yaoied, every scene between them they were having sex actually ! Spoilers ! his death is also both the most earned and deserved death ever. Earned as in he proved himself to be a force for the greater good after rejecting the responsibility constantly, he died surrounded by ppl who love him and was killed performing a heroic act; deserved bc he was very much a creepy asshole, ESPECIALLY to Kaori. Like I love him but Kaori didn't deserve any of that

(Toshihide Wakamastu also super hot. like having a guy that looks like THAT wear leather gloves all the time should be illegal)

2. Jan - Gekiranger

Best sentai red hands down. His arc of becoming a more focused and less feral hero (his domestication arc if you will) is so well done. Him and Leo have a fantastic rivalry (literally destined to kill each other shit) that is also super yaoi. He could have easily been super annoying but thankfully his irrational behavior comes off more endearing (and understandable literally everything is new and confusing to him) thanks in part due to Hiroki Suzuki's great acting (and great face). he's just a lil kitty cat!!!!

3. Asakura - Kamen Rider Ryuki

He's killed dozens of ppl, he was born in a toilet and ate literal shit for years, he serves cunt while having never bathed in his life, he's the character of all time

I adore how the writers do TWO redemption fakeouts w/ him (didn't actually want to reunite w/ his brother nor cared abt that little girl he was "protecting") to drive the point home that this guy? is a agent of pure violence and chaos. he is basically non-human and cannot be reasoned with. This makes him a great narrative foil for "desperately tries to see the good in everyone" Shinji and a great yaoi foil for "literally my job to keep you in order" Kitaoka

Ryuki was a perfect starter kamen rider/toku show for me solely bc of this dude. my hole made for me <3

4. Taiga - Kamen Rider Ex-Aid

Me darling ice king <333 Seriously Taiga is the best character in ex-aid (aside from Poppy). I love how he mirrors Hiiro; both highly prideful and that pride leads them to do more destructive things in pursuit of what they believe is the greater good but really is more so just abt salvaging their bruised egos. And neither them could save Saki as Kuroto guaranteed her death by spraying her w/ more gamer disease

That and his partnership w/ Nico is so charming; hilarious in how Nico's bullheaded attitude forced Taiga to lighten the fuck up and genuinely heartbreaking when Nico was totally hysterical when Taiga nearly died. In short, he has layers like an onion and the sour taste of one too luv himmmmm

ALSO ALSO THE ONLY GUY WHO WANTED TO KILL KUROTO BUT EMU AND HIIRO WERE LIKE "noooo we can't kill this bio terrorist that'd be wrong :( for some reason" based Taiga always correct

5. Yellow/Gaku - Gaoranger

This pick is entirely subjective. He's not super deep or complex by any means (nothing in Gaoranger is, even for a sentai it's light on everything expect batshit insanity) BUT he is very Gender and Just Like Me fr

I love how his character (battle hardened military grunt) could've easily been a no-fun straight man but he acts more like an eldest brother to the team (rational and strict when it comes to immediately dangerous matters but amicable and goofy when it comes to boosting team morale). That and his lil details like randomly speaking English or being morally against eating birds give him that bit more flavor

Anon I've literally never hated the introductory issue to any comic more. I'm including the current ASM run in that.

It's just SUCH a misunderstanding and weird take on every single character involved.

Mantis is... Mantis was in a strange position in that her role as Celestial Madonna had, technically, been fulfilled and you can do a lot with that! You can do so much with that! It's why I'm holding out judgment on her, specifically, until a few more issues come out - I think that the writers are just having her powers go batshit insane. Not the best thing to do, but christ, it'd be better than this being her new personality.

I don't like how Peter is being written to be honest lol. I also just... don't think that this is the right story to be told after Master of the Sun. Not to point out a massive pothole or anything but. Peter has control over all the elements. Groot is made of wood. C'mon now this has to be a joke.

He's also sooooooooooo it's not that Peter wouldn't sacrifice half of the people he was saving to save the others like so long as people LIVED, I could see him doing it. He'd just develop a massive complex about it (see: thanos (2005)).

Nebula being there at all is so weird. She's a villain! An irredeemable one! It's part of her charm! Acting like she'd ever be able to play nice with any of these characters is deranged.

And her being Gamora's sister... now a good writer. a funny writer. would simply say this is yet another case of Nebula claiming to be related to someone. I would ignore every other issue with this run if they did that, it would've been amazing but I fear they're following the MCU for this.

(I'm gonna get sidetracked for a second but jesus my hatred of 616 Nebula being Gamora's sister and Thanos' daughter has no end. This is active character assassination of all three like hello? Why are we pretending that Thanos has children? He had Gamora for a very explicit reason, he had Thane because Hickman hates me, why is Nebula here? She's not biologically his, so what reason does Thanos have to adopt her? I can't see him pulling another Gamora for literally any villain other than the Magus & he already had Gam for that so.... why. Just why).

Gamora is the worst, in my opinion, because I can't find where they got her characterization from. This isn't 616 Gamora for sure, but it isn't MCU Gamora or Eidos Gamora, it's just some random person going around with her name.

Gamora doesn't use Earth slang... at all. I've never seen her call anyone "dad", she'd never be caught dead saying "take the l" and I just... even her non-cringy dialogue feels off.

We know what Gamora in a breakdown looks like (Annihilation: Ronan, Infinity Wars) & it's just not this. She isn't a character, she's a string of quirky buzzwords & alcholism.

(Which is.... oh, the alcoholism could be so so interesting for her re: her relationships with Pip & Tony except these writers don't know what they're doing & have never read a GOTG comic before so I don't think that's gonna be scratched upon).

I'd had high hopes for this run, I thought that this could be the first time we get some solid "in a functioning relationship" Starmora moments. But their relationship is non-existent, their interactions are so stilted and forced and everything between them feels awkward in a way I'm not sure was intentional.

Weekly Book Recs: 10/20-10/27

The Kiss Curse by Erin Sterling

I liked The Ex Hex--and I liked this one even more. Pair a prickly man who likes to wear vests (and one time, a sweater vest) with a wild woman who thinks he's the most boring thing ever? Yes. It begins as a rival witch store thing, and spins into a mystery with some fairly high stakes. The entire time, it's funny, light, and sexy. (Yes, she does ride his face in the back of a truck at one point. Yes, it's great.) These are the perfect Halloween season romcoms, and this one puts the talking cat forward.

Saint by Sierra Simone

If Priest is this erotic operatic angstfest and Sinner a surprisingly sorrowful titillationfest, Saint is a truly reflective, emotional piningfest. Aiden Bell, erstwhile monk who really, really struggles with still being in love with his ex-boyfriend Elijah (this is not aided by the fact that they end up touring European monasteries together) is longing. Longing for Elijah, longing for God, longing for a purpose that will keep him from falling back into the black pit of depression. I don't know if any book I've read before has better described depression, in a way I truly related to. I will say--this is gorgeous and hot and swooningly romantic and surprisingly funny at points, but it is very honest about mental health, so handle with care.

Never Seduce a Scot by Maya Banks

I've been wanting to read Maya Banks for forever, and I wasn't disappointed. This is a well-written (and surprisingly sweet) medieval romance, centered around a hero who is actually a lot gentler than I expected, and a heroine whose deafness has led everyone to believe she is "daft". There's a really lovely romance between the two of them, with Graeme so determined to be ethical and not touch his wife, despite how attracted to her he is, because he doesn't actually believe she can consent. Whereas not only can Eveline consent--she super, super wants to. Graeme was great; Eveline was even better, a really fab heroine who absolutely made the book.

Goddess of the Hunt by Tessa Dare

I always forget just how good Tessa Dare is at her job until I read another Tessa Dare. She's just good! She's fucking good--great, really. Few authors hit the sweet spot between humor, heat, and emotion that she does. And this is her debut, which I've seen her poke fun at on social media. As a writer, I get that, but it's really quite strong and already has the distinct "Tessa" voice. It's hilarious and it's sexy, and has just the right sprinkling of angst to keep it from being boring. The plot is pretty simple--brother's best friend sort of helps our heroine make the guy she thinks she's in love with jealous. But Lucy is just such a batshit heroine, constantly driving Jeremy insane with her tendency to get into trouble--and her tendency to give him a massive boner, frankly. If you need something that will make you smile throughout--and then throw in a... sickeningly hot pair of angry sex scenes.... look no more, you've got it here.

Highlander Most Wanted by Maya Banks

Oof, this one is a lot--and I'll tell you right now, recovering from rape and abuse (neither by the hero) is a big part of the plot. Genevieve is a wounded and deeply lovable heroine; after reading two Maya Banks books back to back, I'm really impressed by how she writes heroines especially. And so far, both of the heroes I've read by her have been loving and fierce but gentle with their women. It's a unique take on a medieval hero. It's somewhat light on plot and big on character development, a romantic book about recovery and coming to terms with the past.
