Cater - Emolga

“Emolga darling~I have a new photo idea! This is definitely going to blew up on Magicam!”

Cater immediately took notice of Victoria and her pokemon and instantly want clout lmao. He absolutely adores the weird creatures and wanted to take pictures of them and upload them to Magicam, unfortunately, Victoria was wary about exposing her pokemon outside of NRC so she doesn’t allow him to take photos.

But after a while, Victoria relented and Cater immediately snatched the opportunity to take as much photos of her pokemon as possible. He likes a lot of the pokemon as they allow him to take photos of them as long as he’s respectful, but his favorite is Emolga because of how cute it is.

Victoria’s Emolga is quite the attention seeker, so when it saw how interested Cater is in it, it immediately began to do cute little poses for Cater to take pictures of it and Cater adores them. When the third year uploaded these photos, it blew up quickly as everyone was cooing how cute the electric flying squirrel is.

Cater and Emolga absolutely ate the popularity up, and the two began to meet each other more and more frequently for Cater to take pictures of it in different style, the two of them also grown closer by that time.

Cater's favorite photos of Emolga is when Victoria allow him to bring the sky squirrel pokemon to Heartslabyul and Emolga poses with the red roses, they're also the most popular photos on Cater's Magicam account.

Now every time Emolga sees Cater, it flew right at him and nuzzle its cheek against the third year (that may nor may not shock him) but Cater loves it anyway.

Cater also used Emolga's cuteness to get more food from Trey too lol, of course Emolga gets a share.

Floyd - Paldean Wooper and Clodsire

Out of everyone in this school, Floyd is the one that she's the most nervous about in terms of meeting her pokemon, she knows how unpredictable the eel is and worry for both his and her pokemon safety. Unfortunately for her, she had made a deal with Azul to have her aquatic pokemon swam in the tanks of Octavinelle and Floyd is close to Azul, so meeting was inevitable.

Floyd couldn't help it even with Victoria's warnings! Every single one of her weird monsters look so squishy in some way! Especially the brown armless axolotl that Victoria specifically told him not to touch it. Wooper likes the attention Floyd gives it too! So one day it ran up to him and Floyd couldn't contain it anymore so he grabs it began to squeeze it, laughing at its goofy smile as he stretches its face.

Unfortunately for the eel, his fun didn't last long because suddenly he got shot by Poison sting that made him drop the Wooper, apparently Clodsire thought he was bullying its baby so it poisoned him.

But Floyd didn't care, he's too infatuated with Clodsire goofy friend-like shape and face and wanted to squeeze it too! Victoria had to stop him from killing himself by his impulsive behavior.

The trainer warned him about how Paldean Wooper and Clodsire are are very poisonous, but did Floyd listen? Nope, he just wanted to squeeze them, and he complained a lot too, so to shut him up, Azul begs Victoria to just let Floyd hang out with Clodsire for once.

Clodsire soon got close to Floyd after seeing how happy the Wooper is when with the eel so it lets him play with its face as well, Floyd is happy for the whole day after that much to the relief of everyone.

He's also very interested in Clodsire's stabby spine, Victoria had to watch him more closely now because she does not know what he wants to do with her pokemon after finding out about that.

Silver - Ceruledge

"W-wait! Don't run away! I just want to train with you..."

Silver does admire Victoria for her ability to control different powerful monsters, but he never got a chance to interact with them because of either his job as Malleus's guard or because he's sleeping somewhere.

But one day, he woke up under a tree upon hearing the swinging sounds of sword, in his half-asleep state, he thought that he saw a person practicing with 2 glowing swords, but then he realize that it's actually just Ceruledge practicing her battling skill alone.

Silver watched in awe as Ceruledge displayed powerful and graceful sword skills, he wonder if he were to battle it, who would won? He wanted to get closer to get a better look, but accidentally stepped on a branch with causes Ceruledge to noticed him and run away.

Silver then approached Victoria after that asking about the pokemon and Victoria reveal that although Ceruledge is a powerful swordsman, it's usually shy and timid and would stay away from strangers, preferring to practice alone, contrary to its intimidating apperance.

The Diasmonia student asked if he could met and spar with it and Victoria agreed, only in the condition that Ceruledge also agree. Ceruledge hides behind Victoria when meeting Silver, still wary of him, so Silver decides to convince it by showing it his own sword skill, and this succeeded as the pokemon was intrigued.

The two had a sparing session and Silver felt like the pokemon did a 180 in personality, it was quick to attack him and is almost merciless in slashing him with its sword. Silver ultimately lost, and Ceruledge did a 180 in personality again when it panics, thinking that it sevearly hurt him.

Silver then began to frequently go to Ramshackle to practice against Ceruledge, and he became one of the few people that the pokemon isn't shy around.

Thoughts on everyone's favourite mud loaf, Clodsire?

I remember one of the Pokemon designers saying a while back in an interview that they design Pokemon to be friend-shaped, and I feel like that idea is in full-force here. This thing looks like a plushie. If you flopped over on top of it it would neither notice nor care. You could hug this thing for days and your arms would never get tired. Truly, a creature(TM).

Okay but more seriously, Clodsire is cute and a fine Pokemon overall. I almost wonder if it needed to be a separate 'mon instead of just a Quagsire regional, as nothing has changed thematically and all Quagsire's elements are present. (Side note: Wooper was a good pick for a regional evo in this regard, as it doesn't make the original line less viable than the new one due to both evolving.)

Part of the reason might be that Quagisre is more of a Giant Salamander, while Clodsire is based off the Iberian Ribbed Newt (above), i.e., the one that shoves its own ribs through its skin and covers them with poison. This is obvious when you read the 'dex:

These hidden "spines" add a neat biology reference and make for a fun surprise if you didn't know they were there.

Beyond that, Clodsire has a nice design. The browns on the body are a pleasant shade and reflect its partial ground typing nicely. The counter shading keeps the body from being too plain, as does the fin on the back. Meanwhile, the pale spots on its back hint at the presence of the spines and further help break up the otherwise dark brown color. The purple coloration of the spines also work well considering its poison-typing. It's simple—nothing crazy thematically or any complex visuals—but very pleasant.

So overall, a pretty strong 'mon. It's a nice regional evo that doesn't invalidate the original line, but has enough changes to feel justified. The spines are a fun biology reference, and the design is nicely balanced, simple, and easy to understand. I do still prefer Paldean Wooper a bit more—just because I adore the skull-and-crossbones gills—but this is worthwhile evo all around.

have you done clodsire or quagsire yet?

(I haven't, so I flipped a coin and ended up landing on quagsire!)

A quagsire may be a lot for a lot of pet owners to handle, but it would certainly not be out of the question for someone with the right resources that knows what they're getting into.

See, quagsires love to swim. Or maybe it'd be better to say they like to float, or maybe even just sit, in water. In the wild, quagsires live in rivers (Crystal), even popping up often in those that are busy with human activity and boats (Gold). We don't know exactly what quagsires eat, but we know that they catch their prey by remaining as still as possible with their mouths held wide open, waiting for prey to swim right into them (Ruby/Sapphire). They don't move a lot (Ruby/Sapphire) but they spend a lot, if not almost all, of their time in the water. Having a pet quagsire would require having constant access to water for them to spend their time in. They are known to not get hungry quickly due to their sluggish lifestyle (Ruby/Sapphire), but they are not too clever (Pearl), so it is possible that a quagsire wouldn't maintain a healthy diet outside of their natural habitat and may become malnourished. They're not active hunters, so it would be important, when keeping one, to seek ways to either replicate their wild hunting behavior by releasing live prey into a controlled water environment or to find ways to hand-feed them that don't lead to them becoming lazy or overweight.

Given quagsires' size, handling these needs would be no easy task. Not many people have constant access to a body of water that is big enough for a four foot creature to spend all day in, unless they are willing to give up a pool to become their new buddy's hangout spot. Luckily, they aren't picky about their habitats: they are well known to be easy-going and carefree, not minding when they bump into obstacles like boats or rocks (Gold, FireRed).

Quagsires are, for the most part, not very dangerous. However, they are capable of using two moves that had a large impact on their score: Earthquake and Toxic. Earthquake is one of the most concerning moves that a pokémon can learn, since it can wreck haoc on your home and poses a risk to everyone inside it. Toxic allows quagsires to, with high accuracy, inflict a target with a bad poisoning that worsens over time. Quagsires are not known to be very aggressive given their care-free lifestyle, but we must consider that accidents do happen, and this pokémon, for whatever reason, can cause a lot of destruction to your home and body.

Quagsires are pretty laid back pokémon. They'd make a great buddy, and they're cute to boot. If you are able to provide an environment that simulates their wild habitat for their health and happiness, and are aware of the unlikely, but possible, chance of a dangerous incident, a quagsire may be a good pet for you. I'd suggest that newer water-type pet owners start off with something smaller, like a wooper or a fish pokémon, to get used to caring for an aquatic pet, but if you are determined to dive right in with this big fella it can't go that wrong.

1. Rika never seemed to be the type to take gifting as a favourable form of affection, her love language more touch then anything. Of course with this in mind, when you decide to give her a little something to show how much she means to you; this couldn’t be a quick cheap fix. With perhaps the best luck ever or the most patience in existence you chose for one of the hardest things you could think of. Shiny Hunting.

2. Knowing how much Rika adored her Clodsire and treated that adorable bundle of joy like her own child the hunting choice was pretty obvious. Completely losing track of how much time you spent hunting down the elusive Wooper; when you finally had one to show you immediately made a run for her. A surprised but amused Rika catching you with ease after busting through the league doors and practically jumping into her arms disregarding everyone else around you entirely.

3. Leaving yourself no chance to back away after pouring so much hard work and love into this single gift you quickly found the pokeball buried in your bag safely; holding it out to her with both hands practically begging her to take it. At first she simply raised an eyebrow, perhaps wondering why you would choose her of all people to look after one of your pokemon but she was far from dense and caught onto what you were doing rather quickly when you didn’t budge, especially with the fact you handed her a cherish ball of all things.

4. A little stunned maybe, Rika grabbed your wrist with a light grip turning your hand over to lean in and place a kiss over the back of your hand as a small gesture of thanking you. Taking the pokeball before you could protest or even drop it in surprise to her actions. Her soft lips leaving a lovely warmth burnt into the little spot on your hand, prompting you to pull back and hold that hand close to your heart after she had the cherish ball safely in her grasp. The cute response you gave bringing a smile up to her lips again.

5. Curiosity winning her over quickly, Rika opened up the pokeball sending the little bundle of love out to settle itself on her desk. The soft little happy Wooper sounds echoing in the room briefly before a rather long silence followed shortly after. At first you had to wonder if maybe this was a bad idea, she already had a Clodsire and giving her a small Wooper to take care of on top of her duties already? Luckily before you could think any harder about it you took a brave glance up and saw her slowly reaching out for the Wooper, picking the little one up in a surprisingly gentle way. Holding the shimmering Wooper close to her chest Rika didn’t care at all about her shirt; far too used to washing out copious amounts of dirt and mud on the daily.

6. Turning to you immediately with the little one curled up in her arms making soft little happy noises Rika gave you a gorgeous, bright and wide smile, her eyes full of tender love and affection; looking between the two of you with a sheer happiness you had never seen her express before brought an unexplainable joy for yourself as well. Although now it seemed you had another contender for her attention...

7. Every single time you seen her from that point forward the shiny Wooper had always been close by, more often then not snuggled into her lap while she worked on ridiculous amounts of paperwork again, seeming rather content with being forced to do all this work now she had the Wooper to hold. If the little one wasn’t in her lap it was absolutely close by, you had come by to see it playing with her Clodsire or Poppy on occasion as well. Sometimes it would even wait for you.

8. The little Wooper had become Rika’s second child of sort and perhaps even somewhat your own, every little thing that shimmering bundle of love did Rika absolutely had to tell you about it. New moves, silly mistakes, any level ups, if you could name it you would have been told about it at some point. Even the smallest of things never got left out such as the time the Wooper got itself miraculously stuck in a trash can when Rika glanced away for a few seconds; that story had gotten around particularly well even Poppy told it to you a few times.

9. Rika made sure you had no room to be jealous however, any time you came to her for affection she included the both of you with ease. Sometimes you would even end up on her lap with her Wooper curled up on yours, Rika always made sure to clean off your clothing for you after times like these; although she never let you bring spares of your own and had you wearing her clothing as you left each time. No one who saw said anything but you were sure you had seen Larry give an understanding and approving nod once before.

So, the first 10 minutes of the presentation was shovelware shit, but we did get 10 minutes of Scarlet and Violet info, so let's dig into it

Below are my personal opinions, don't argue if you disagree lol, but I like what I'm seeing so far

New Pokémon

Cetitan, land whale, ice

I'm surprisingly a fan of this design, but I'm not a fan of the pink. I think a light blue would have fit much better. But other than that I like it, it's a big boy. I just hope it's not a bulky ice type. Those hardly do well.

So first off, another pokemon to the list that I'd eat. Second off. It apparently has yeast breath. I'm disgusted but intrigued. It's cute! But YEAST BREATH. I might be allergic to it

My boi! He's ground/poison now and apparently you'll just find poisoned pokemon near where it lives. I love him so much. He went from :D to :0

Now... for the forms I've been waiting for

POKEMON ON MOTORCYCLES? More like POKEMON ARE MOTORCYCLES! This is so stupid it circles back to being AWESOME. I am so glad we no longer have to ride a geeky bike. Put me on the back of my LEGENDARY MOTORCYCLE!

Terrastal Phenomenon and Terra Types

I've actually theorized that types would be the next target, because where else can we go from there other than Fusions? But anyway, essentially from what I understand, a Pokémon gains STAB depending on the type enhancements it gets. Each Pokémon has a Terra type as well, which I'm just going to assume operates on the same principles as Hidden Power. Some Pokémon will apparently even change types, such as Pikachu becoming part Flying. All Pokémon can use this

There's also raids again but eh, I was never a fan of those in SwSh so moving on

The map

So we finally have a name and map. Welcome to Paldea/PokeSpain. Not crazy about the name (although I am excited for the FGO memes about it being close to Chaldea lol) but the region does look beautiful and way less of a straight line than Galar. Best of all its truly open world, apparently. No, LA was not open world, but it was a step in the right direction with open sandboxes. This is probably the best news this god forsaken franchise has gotten since it came to the Switch. Hopefully this means we won't have annoying NPCs getting in our way

Also there's 3 stories apparently that you can complete whenever you want, so that's awesome too, that includes gym order as well.

I'll do characters in a separate post because apparently I've hit a pic limit.

Overall good news tho, but we're still having to wait for starter evolutions. Ugh. I'm actually scared because they fucked up last time and I can't deal with that again. Maybe in September? For my birthday? Plz?

Wooper Socialisation

Woopers tend to be very communal species, very social amongst themselves, and generally are friendly towards other Pokémon species, too. I've always loved Woopers - they're just so cute and joyful!

Please enjoy some observations from Woopers around Johto I did recently (under the cut below)!

Like I stated, Woopers are some of the friendliest Pokémon species - they love to play. One of their favourite activities I observed was making mud slides! It's a form of playing first and foremost, but also serves to strengthen bonds with their group. Additionally, it also serves as a form of induction for new Woopers, or even other small Pokémon in the area.

Wooper tails are quite muscular - some of the strongest muscles in their body are in their tails! See the below figure:

The primary need for such a muscly concentration, as C. Stoll illustrates above, is for maneuvering in aquatic environments. Being part Water-Type, Woopers spend a significant amount of time in various bodies of water (inc. rivers, lakes, streams). Their tails are their main source of movement in water bodies. However, they also use their tails for the recreational purpose of mud slide building!

Woopers use their tails to scoop mud into slopes resembling slides, which they then pat down to smooth out (again, using their tails), and leave to dry for a little in the sun if the mud is too sloppy. Then, they take turns quite literally rolling down the mud slides!

From what I saw, the building of the mud slides is a collaborative effort - it's encouraged for everyone in the group to get involved. As well as being fun for more established members in the group, it's a great way of building social bonds with other Pokémon. Additionally, it also helps young Woopers strengthen their tail muscles, which is especially beneficial in cases where young Woopers haven't had much experience swimming.

Wooper colonies, as stated above, are extremely friendly, so it isn't uncommon for other small Pokémon in the area to join in with the mud slides. Over the month I was observing them, I saw the following species join in:

Sentret, with the occasional supervising Furret

Azurill and Marill

Pichu

Caterpie

Skitty

Oddish

Rattata

Oh, quick note! I haven't observed Paldean Wooper groups. I've only ever been to Paldea once when I was 13, so I can only assume Paldean Woopers demonstrate similar social structures, but I can't say for sure. Paldean-based trainers and/or experts, please let me know if you have any expertise on this topic!

Hello! *Casually phasing through a conveniently placed wall* may I present my Clodsire to you in this trying time? *Lifts up my Clodsire named Cloddy* look at her. I adore her. Her walking and running animations are gold. (Got Scarlet and Violet for Christmas and I got a Wooper very early into the game. I evolved her not too short of a few days ago and I love her even more than I did when she was a Wooper. THE SHE! Also, I couldn't catch a ground tera type female Growlithe. Sad.) ~Strike anon~

Pokemon Scarlet, part the 4th. I fought a giant crab and then beat an avant-garde artist.

Whenever I start these it always feels like there's so much to cover. Well I guess one of the first things of note that happened to me since my last post was that Yarn Ball evolved. It turned into a spool spider. Well I don't think it's as cute anymore and it's clear it's not evolving again so I made my first teammate switch in a while. I replaced it with Tinkerton (the small pink thing with the mallet).

I had fun exploring the maze that is that rocky area. At one point I ran into a level 25 Hariyama, which was pretty high for the area, at first I was intimidated, but then I was like, nah, my Flamingo can take this guy. And it totally could have too! But the coward used Whirlwind and disappeared! I was like "Come back here and fight me like a Poke-MAN"

When riding on Koraidon, I keep finding myself trying to click on the button in PLA that let me dash, only to be disappointing at my lack of dashing. I really wished I could Dash, this will come up later.

While I was in that maze I saw a tera raid. The silhouette reminded me of a Tailow. Now I don't know what Pokemon are in this game and what are not so I thought it might be a Tailow. But instead it was something new! It was called Wattel I think? So now I have a tera bug Wattel, named Watt. (really creative, I know).

So I get to the Pokecenter next to the town so I can heal up before seeing the first titan. And I see those Squakabilly birds, so I catch the which plumage one and blue plumage one. I didn't see anyother kinds around there so I assume the green ones are found else where, I think there are also orange ones too. I'm not sure how many colors there are.

I also saw red Oricolo, I went into a battle with one and tried to catch it before going to the center. A bit of a mistake because I was starting to run low on balls. It had just a sliver of health left, yet it kept breaking out of the ball. I eventually caught it with the very last ball I had left, a Nest ball. I ran out of everything else. Glad my effort still payed off I guess.

So I go back and follow the map to try to find the titan crab, and it doesn't take too long. Oh btw, I also caught one of the non titan crabs that were around. I spent a bit of time beating up random crabs in the area because Floragata had such a nice time advantage. I kept one-shotting them. Soon both Lechonk and Wooper evolved while I saw doing this. I didn't even do it for long, they just both close to evolving. So I had a Cludsire and a female uhhhh whatever the Pig's evolution was called, Oinkage?

So I walk up to the crab on the wall and it just kinda scuttles away from me, and I was a little bit confused because I thought it would fight me right away but I guess not? So I follow it up the hill and *then* I battle it. I tera my grass cat and Magic Leaf it, suddenly it's low health and the battle is already over.

The crab goes back down and the game is like "follow the crab!" so I try to directly follow it down the cliff but the game is like NO that's too steep! So jump on Koraidon and go down there anyway. I tried to land atop the crab, but I don't the game expected me to do that so I went right through, so I was under the crab. Then the cutscene plays and I am no longer under crab. Arven also shows up, guess he's just been hanging nearby?

We battle the crab again together, which is cool. I was worried I wouldn't be able to Tera my grass cat again because already just used it, but the game let me, so cool. And it only takes 2 attacks. Sorry Arven but you really weren't needed here.

He makes sandwiches. And I already knew that completing one of the different paths was supposed to give Koraidon more abilities. And I figured it was this one, what with the herbs healing abilities. So no surprise when Kori wanted my food, so I gave it to it. And just as expected BOOM! New ability, I was delighted realizing it was the Dash ability, because I really wanted to Dash! :D

Arven gave me the other half of the sandwich, very nice of him actually. He doesn't seem to be very found of Kori though. (btw I decided to call Koraidon, "Kori" for short if you haven't already picked up on that).

Anyway the weird part is that I leave and Arven is talking to something or other. I assume a Pokemon, but we don't see what it is. He seems to be trying to heal some Pokemon. Whatever it is, it must be something major because the game won't show me it.

Oh man this has been a lot of typing only to just now get to the end of the titan part, now to get to the gym leader! I pretty much went to the gym leader right afterwards, no dilly dallying.

But one random thing I meant to say but haven't yet- Washing! During the picnics I mean. Washing my Pokemon. Similar to a feature from the Alola games, where you clean up your Pokemon to heal them from damage and status conditions. So similar feature, similar function. Playing it reminds me of giving my nintendogs a bath, what with the suds and shower-head.

Anyway I was washing all my Pokemon up to heal them one time. And I wondered if I could also give Kori a bath despite not battling with it. And I can! This pleases me :3c Can I pet the dog? Yes I can!

Anyway the gym. Apparently the town has a real artistic population, and I can see that reflected in how beautiful the town is. I was told to find 10 Sunflora hidden around the town. Was a bit worried about my frame rate already cause I heard about the sun flora messing with it. Well it didn't really affect me.

Anyway I wonder if the sunflora locations are randomized or not, I already found 3 just a laying there immediately outside of their pen, not very good at hide and seek, are they? It wasn't much trouble finding the rest, one battled me but that was it (I wonder if something like that is also randomized too). I also climbed around on that playground, that was neat, even if there wasn't anything that cool on it, just being able to climb it was cool.

Anyway, I forgot to also mention this but I switched out my pig for my electric bird Watt, was kinda excited about the bird because I had no clue what it would look like when evolved. So I used Watt to take out the grass leaders first 2 Pokemon and used my Flamingo for the last one. It was pretty easy, I'll be honest. Had a bit of trouble with Petlil's sleep powder but a berry was all I need to wake up my bird again.

Anyway the plant guy is... interesting? Didn't really expect the personality he has with the look that he has. If he were a Pokemon, he looks like he would be a grass/dark based off of appearance. But maybe not. He's just some eccentric artist and a bit of a weirdo.

"Avant-garde"? Nah All I did was creme you with a type advantage. There wasn't really skill to that at all. Anyway he's an artist, but of what? fine art I assume. But is it paintings? sculptures? Also do you think he's be friends with Burg? After all they are both gym leaders and artists. I assume that someone out there has already made fanart of them hanging out.

Anyway I talked about the titan, I talked about the grass gym leader, so you think I'm done right? No, I got more to say! I walked around in the area around the town and caught the fighting Tauros. As well as Dunsparce, the koala (which really packed a punch), Tandem mouse (which reminds of Pokemon like eggsacute and falinks), and Flabebe. I'm forgetting anything else I caught.

Then I went towards the 1st Star base. I haven't started the raid yet but I will soon. Something I only just now noticed, 18 types, 8 gyms, 5 titans, and 5 star bases. I bet all of them are a different type right? that's cool, I like that!

I haven't been battling random trainers much, because the game no longer forces it, I have a hard time keeping track of who I fought and who I didn't. I keep passing up fighting trainers because I want to keep exploring.

Anyway I love my shit when "Clive" showed up. You ain't foolin' anybody Clavell! I guess when he overheard all the way back in the school he wanted to get involved with Starfall. I must say, from the trailers I didn't trust him, but he's really endeared himself to me now.

I wonder how he's going to help me with the raid, will he be healing me maybe? I guess I'll see.

New pokemon coming up in Scarlet and Violet and my thoughts on them. TDLR; they're all hits for me.

Sprigatito, we've all seen him! Literally so cute, you can't fuck up a cat pokemon

Fuecoco is so cute and doofy. A great spiritual successor to totodile honestly, I love these guys so much. The middle and final evos will decide for me whether I get him or sprigatito.

Quaxly isn't a favorite because I don't really like pokemon that look like they're wearing clothes and the feathers on his head look like a Waluigi cap to me. BUT he is still pretty cute, I wouldn't be sad about having him on my team.

Koraidon, tbh, at first I wasn't thrilled with the legendary designs, but they've really grown on me! I know the motorcycle thing is kinda goofy but that's fine. I don't mind a little goofiness in a game made for children tbqh. Koraidon's head design is VERY nice tbh

Miraidon, I like his vibe tbqh. Nintendo loves airplane looking pokemon??? It's funny. The engine legs ruin it a little bit for me, I think it'd actually be really sick if Miraidon was a serpent, you know? Top half is good tho, no notes.

Armarouge, this is my first time seeing this guy. I like him! I like the hair-made-out-of-fire thing he's got going on with the top of his head, it's always a very good design thing to me. Not that I know much about design, but I vibe with it anyway! Mask is very nice too. Ik I said I don't like pokemon that look like they're wearing clothes but I think because Armarouge is so humanoid it gets past that for me.

Ceruledge's design fucking SLAPS. Dual arm swords are SO good and the blue fire hair, MWAH! Looks like a playable character in a fighting RPG and I would choose him in a heartbeat. A very good counterpart to Armarouge and honestly the better one for me.

Cetitan, LOOK at him! He's such a huge boy, a great boy, I love him!!! His mouth has such a fucked up shape but I literally love him for that.

Cyclizar, I'm going to cry, look at him. I do wish he didn't have the wheel neck pouch and just a normal looking one and then he'd be perfect for me, but over all! Very cute. A little goofy, but it's ok.

Fidough, absolutely NO NOTES. Such a cutie. A little close to yamper because of the color, but not bad. I love fairy types. I want to gnaw on his doughy ears.

Grafaiai, based of the Aye-aye, going off the name? Yes looks like so, anyway, I love him! Cute little gremlin design, very very nice.

Klawf, oh my GOD Klawf. He's such a weirdo. I don't want him on my team but I can appreciate a doofy design.

Lechonk, perfect, beautiful pokemon that's prolly gonna evolve into one of those absolute units. As soon as I get the game, I'm gonna form a party of 6 with little names like "Chonkers" and "Lil Chonks" and "Babe".

Paldean Wooper, just look at him! Cute as wooper already is, not much to say. I like him a lot.

Pawmi, the pika-cousin of the Paldea region. Tbh I love all the pika-cousins, they're very cute and very friend-shaped. Pawmi is no exception.

Smoliv, perfect, no notes. I'll take 20. Did you know that Spain produces almost half of the world's olive oil?

Wiglett, I love for his shape AND for what he represents. At first he looks like a regional diglett form, but actually he's a completely separate species, so I really enjoy the implications for pokemon adaptation and the nods to real-life evolution, how sometimes animals form similar characteristics even though they're completely unrelated, and sometimes when animals are separated for long enough, they change into completely different species. Wiglett is a LITTLE unnerving the way he stretches out of the ground but, since he's based off a garden eel, if you look at pictures of those things, they're ALSO a little unnerving actually. I love him. I want to kiss his smooth head.

Honestly, in a surprise twist...I think I actually have a full team of six for Violet.

Sprigatito Lechonk Fidough Klawf/Paldean Wooper Ceruledge Farigiraf

It’s even completely discrete types!  This feels...unprecedented.

Sprigatito is the best of the starters presently.  I am anticipating a potential major shift in this, but don’t expect either of the other two to suddenly step up.  Maybe we’ll get a Primarina situation.  But I’m not gonna count on it, especially because Ceruledge is a hard guarantee as a Fire-type, so sorry Fuecoco.

Lechonk is an early-game Normal, and effectively the regional rodent despite being a pig, so I fully expect it to fall off and maybe be too annoying to use in a first run.  But we’ll see.  Hopefully it gets some fun stuff.

Fidough is in, unless we get an even cuter Fairy-type.  I have to have a fairy.

I’m torn.  Despite my love of the goober that is Klawf, Paldean Wooper is also pretty cute, and I love the idea of a Ground/Poison type with Water Absorb.

Ceruledge is a guarantee.  I love this thing.  It’s so cool looking, I love Fire/Ghost as a typing, its arms are swords, and its signature move is a healing move, which I adore.  There is almost no situation in which I could see dropping Ceruledge.

Farigiraf could be dropped.  Could.  If we get another really cute Psychic-type.  But I really like it, and I love that they gave an old, under-appreciated Pokemon a new evolution out of nowhere, and I have to have a Psychic type (contractually required) so I’m glad my goofy giraffe baby is here to provide a good starting point.

My goal, as always with a new gen, is to work with only Pokemon from the new generation in the first time through.  And surprisingly, Violet’s doing a good job providing.  We’ll see how things are going forward.  Who knows, maybe Iono’s partner will replace something.  I’m not above making some tweaks, but this is a really nice starting point.

I just watched the new Pokémon Presents! See now THIS is what I wanted! New region, new gimmick, a few tantalizing looks at new characters etc. without giving away too much!

So my thoughts are:

I still don’t like Miraidon or Koraidon. In fact, I think Koraidon looks even worse now cause it doesn’t even use its tires on land. What’s the point of the tires if it’s just running around anyway? Is it a Flintstones reference or something? I mean I guess that’d be thematically appropriate but it also feels too silly. Given that we’re evidently stuck with them from the start, I suppose they’ll grow on me over time, but I still can’t decide which version I’m gonna get.

Some confirmed leaks! Region’s name is Paldea, Grusha appears to be one of the leaked Gym Leaders and Penny is one of the rivals that was leaked! Additionally, we have the predicted Poison-type Wooper.

Some new characters: the homeroom teacher, the Ice Gym Leader, two new rivals and the school’s headmaster who I’m already convinced is evil. Sun/Moon, Sword/Shield and Legends gave me trust issues, sorry.

The new gimmick is crystallizing Pokemon! Pretty cool! Feel like it could be better visually but I like it!

New Pokemon! Fidough and Cetitan! Fidough is cute, being a squishy little pastry doggo and Cetitan appears to be an icy whale covered in spikes.

Apparently there are three storylines in the game and we can craft the story as we go, fitting for the whole open world thing. One of them is the typical gym challenge but we haven’t gotten a reveal for the other two.

First off is Cirus, my lucario, male. hes my absolute baby, my unit of a man, hes about 4' something and hes an absolute dumbass <3 he likes to snuggle and if i dont give him enough attention hell shove his snoot under my arm to get pettins. hes my first pokemon and i got him as a riolu

Sylveon, male - who im slowly giving the new nickname Snorple! - is a little bastard, but i adore him to no end. sometimes hell stand over my chest and stare down at me like hes plotting my ultimate demise. he also occasionally just palps people with his ribbons and its kinda funny cuz ill be minding my own business and suddenly my face is palped by soft fuzzy tentacles. Did you know theyre carnivores?

Manchester, a little male wooper i got from my brother (he got him from a random pokemon trade), is just a funky little dude. he sometimes just. gums on my hand. which is really weird but also cute. they have small teeth so his chompins dont hurt *too* much unless he gets too excited

Theres FEESH, who's a male clodsire (also from my brother). hes basically bonded with manchester and parents him. its super cute because hell let manchester bite on his little stumpy leggies and its so sweet, theyre also almost always cuddling

Geebole, my female garchomp, is basically my #1 pokemon, her and cirus come with me everywhere, and were working on getting both of them registered as service pokemon! theyre wonderful, and thankfully geebole has sand veil instead of rough skin so shes easier to pet! i got her as a baby gibble too <3 hence her name lol

Psybeam, male dusk lycanroc. i caught him as a regular ol'e rockruff, and as he got older he got a bit more aggresive and bitey. i was expecting him to end up evolving one night, but no! he evolved at like. 5pm on a tuesday and now hes my lovely orange baby! hes named after the move he apparently knows, psybeam, which i didnt know rockruffs could learn!

Hydreigon, they dont respond to any gendered term so i call them Big Bastard. still unnamed other than that, lol. took a lot of training and a lot of repairs to my parents house to get them to not be so bitey and destructive as a hydreigon, but thats why i started working with them early as a deino! honestly at this point theyre fairly sweet, despite the species reputation. theyre a bit tempermental though, and i have to make sure i have PLENTY of chew toys and things they can tear appart else they'll use my matress or something instead. i dont want to have to replace the tv again 😔

skeeby, female arcanine. fun fact, her tera is rock, which is kinda cool! i dont remember how i learned this, lmao. but anyway, when i caught her, she was a growlithe and she deadass attacked me the second i made eye contact. immediately ran and full blown tackled me before i could react lmao, but hey now shes my big ole warm ass cuddlebug! shes a fucking space heater and i love cuddling her on cold winters

Beef Jerky, female volcarona. not a whole lot to say about her, she has -3 braincells but keeps me nice and toasty :) shes also very good at scaring the shit out of me because she learned how to play dead (thank my brother...) and so shell occasionally just Do That with minimal prompting and ill walk out of my room and have a heart attack cause shes on the floor upside down. fucking bastard bug (beloved)

Minior!! Literally JUST got them (as of editing the post), they are so ROUND and shaped and YELLOW!!!!!! god my little beloved right here. not much is known about them yet, but i got them from @teambloodmoonofficial :)

“Go! Run!!” Its a much younger Rika, about 13, fleeing from a Bombirdier that was intent on pelting her with a rock of some kind. She was practically falling over her school uniform as she sprinted down the hill with Bappy on her shoulder- Still a Wooper at this point, and on her heels was a Phanpy, trumpeting at the top of its little lungs to try and scare the bird away.

The bird was unfortunately unfazed by their vain attempts to deter it, though, and drops a rock that tumbles and manages to clip her in the ankle, tripping her up and sending her skidding across the ground while it scooped up another rock. Bappy, meanwhile, had gotten tossed from her shoulder and wasn’t too happy about being forcibly separated from its trainer, crying out at the Bombirdier as it ran toward Rika on wobbly little legs- But ones filled with absolute determination as it launched itself into the path of another oncoming rock… And there was a bright flash of light that engulfed it, and a surge of power as its shape permanently altered-

Evolution.

Colliding head on with the rock was a newly grown Clodsire, the rock shattering and breaking into numerous pieces thanks to its newly acquired bulk, hardly an ounce of damage seen as Bappy roared at the bird and… Brandished a new set of giant, terrifying looking spines from the spots on its back.

The new threat of violence saw the bird completely rethinking this prank, and off it flew.

Rika, meanwhile was just sitting there wide eyed and in shock at the absolute state of her best friend. “Bappy…?” She gasped, crawling across the ground as the newly evolved Clodsire flopped its way over, making the happiest noises and shoving its face into her stomach, Rika unable to keep from laughing as she let herself lay over him and hug him with practically her whole body. “Look at you!! You got so big!! You’re not such a little guy anymore! I’m gonna miss you sitting on my shoulder, but… Look how cute you got!”

Theres laughter between the small group, and eventually she stands, her and her two pokemon off to the next gym- Watch out Brassius, She’s got a donut now.

My partner and I are playing the new Pokémon games together (they got Violet and I got Scarlet so that we can trade and all that), my partner grew up playing Pokémon but this will be my first Pokémon game ever, so I thought I might document the experience

Background:

While I’ve never played a Pokémon game before I have played other Nintendo games, notably Animal Crossing (WW and NH), Mario Kart (many versions), and recently Breath of the Wild, so I do have some sense of how video games work

I’m not going into this totally blind as my partner has been educating me on Pokémon gradually over the years, I know what the types of Pokémon are and I know enough Pokémon to have favourites (Mantine and Spheal), that said I know very little about type match-ups or battle strategy

Initial thoughts:

Coming into this having just played a Lot of botw was maybe a mistake, botw is a near perfect open world game (imo) and this feels very clunky and awkward in comparison. With the glitchy-ness too it almost feels unfinished

I don’t know what I’m doing! I hear that a lot of Pokémon fans think the new games are too easy but I found being dropped into this game with so much information to learn about each Pokémon and so many choices to make about their actions quite daunting

Not knowing what I’m doing paired with getting given all the main quests at the same time was rather overwhelming

Once I figured out how to get around the Pokédex, I quite like it! I like them being like files on a shelf and having little information cards, it’s cute. I fully intend to complete the Pokédex (I’m a big fan of collecting in games) and I’m happy with this way of looking at it

The legendary Pokémon is so cool and so silly at the same time, he’s my dragon friend, he loves sandwiches, he has wheels but doesn’t use them, what a design XD

My team:

Long before these games came out I decided I was going to make a team made up of exclusively round Pokémon, because I love them

I chose Fuecoco as my starter for its roundness, cuteness, and because fire seems like a good type

Fuecoco’s evolutions are less round, which I think might be a recurring problem with my round team, I havent decided yet whether to kick previously round members of the team off when they are no longer round, it is a round team but also I do want to actually progress in the game

My current team is Crocalor, Hoppip, Azurill, Igglybuff, Wooper, and Lechonk. All pretty round, very beautiful, very powerful

We'll see how this adventure continues!

haven't posted in a few days, so catching up! it's a little difficult to warn for... spoilers? given the open world nature of this game. anyway, some things i cover: los platos, mesagoza, artazon, first titan pokemon, first gym battle (brassius).

i paid so little attention to pokemon sv that upon seeing this wooper, i definitely thought it was a shiny or something until i saw that it was a paldean form.

finally got to los platos... i'm still playing on handheld right now, but honestly shocked at the fact that unless i'm practically right next to a character, the framerate on their walking animations or anything just gets absolutely wrecked. every time i exit out of the game, i keep prompting my switch to check it for updates. i would love to play a more stable version of this game...

i'm still trying to figure out which pokemon i'll use in this game... ideally i want my main team to be primarily pokemon that are new to this gen, just because they're new.

i was also originally giving all my pokemon nicknames... until i realized... i don't know the names of these pokemon from this generation yet, anyway. so walking that back pretty immediately. i'll let myself attempt to nickname pokemon once i feel like i have that down more!

OKAY, finally trying this out with my switch docked... it does feel immediately smoother to play. even just turning the camera feels better.

decided to actually advance the story (partially because i want access to more customization stuff ASAP) and battled nemona... didn't even know terastallizing was a thing in this gen since i've paid so little attention to it, whoops. it really does feel like they have to do some iteration of this in each gen now.

finally in mesagoza.

HAIR SALON. YES.

man, even with my switch docked, still seeing the incredibly choppy animations when i'm any distance from NPCs...

i just got so lost trying to find where the hair salon was despite my desperation. i did eventually find it, however! toned down my hair colour a little. i wish we had more hair options, but i'm assuming we'll get more as we unlock more locations. same too for the clothing options in this city.

hm, after getting my hair done, i'm also surprised to see i can't wear hats with what i assume is the style i chose? that's kind of limiting, given that our customization options are already limited to accessories.

just saw penny for the first time... i remember when i first saw her design, i thought she would be a class of trainers you'd run into? i'm happier if she's a unique character. she's so cute...

NEMONA...

one shopping trip later, i did finally make it to the school.

wow i wonder what reason that would be, nemona.

i did get spoiled on this from some friends, but i love how you get this far hanging out with nemona before you find out that oh, she's the champion, actually. which really reframes that first battle she had with you where she was fully about to unleash her champion team on a kid that just got their first pokemon.

wow, finally got to class and got to experience that scene where the game is just struggling as kids kick their legs.

after this i saw we also had... classes available? which i wasn't expecting. i just did one (a biology class) but i guess i'll have to go back and do more later... a friend of mine mentioned that you can get more cutscenes at the school, but i feel like the game doesn't do much to incentivize or point you to that, other than letting you know classes exist. maybe that'll change? we'll see.

honestly, the fact that the whole school is talking about me—not because of something the player did—but because they just so happened to show up with nemona is interesting. i sort of like that it frames the player as exceptional only by association.

hm. surprised that we had this big time skip. i feel like that first week would've been a good opportunity to actually do those classes or socialize with characters outside of the main story objectives? which could've been nice, especially since you're being presented with these main story objectives (or in arven's case, his dream?) and those characters having this level of investment in the player character would make more sense to me if they had more of a relationship before getting into that.

i'm talking to arven still and he's going into what his dream is and if i want to help him pursue it, and he's talking about these giant pokemon that guard the mystica herbs. i'm assuming that's one of the objectives. i'm not sure if you're able to tackle multiple? i would assume so, since it would feel strange to do this and then be cut off from the usual gym progression.

my guy you literally just gave me miraidon. (although i understand that miraidon isn't able to use its power for the moment.)

oh, there's beef. i see. i actually like that there's at least something a bit more antagonistic between the two of them?

god, okay, i love that arven just poured his heart out about his dream and then promptly goes running out of the room as soon as he's done. he's awkward and bookish and i love him already.

no real feelings about hearing from cassiopeia yet... i also went back and spoke to nemona, so now i've had everyone present their respective tasks to me.

not insufficient incentive. i do think how he is about food is cute!!

i've just been running around the area from the east gate for awhile... i'm glad it seems like we can go all three routes concurrently? i was worried i would have to choose just to do one, and that i'd end up missing content.

i'm testing out the "let's go" feature a bit more... it's been nice as a more passive way to get EXP/raise my levels without having to be pulled into an active battle every time. my sprigatito evolved... trying to work on my team and hopefully round out the types i have.

i also checked out my first raid! i wish it would prompt you in-menu to connect to the internet when forming a party, rather than having to do so separately and then do that. so far i haven't had any issues forming parties online, at least. and i've only seen lower level raids.

finally got to artazon... i passed one of the pokemon for arven's quest on the way. i figured i'd just come back for it after i finally visit the city.

while i was in the city, i also ended up beating my first gym leader! it was cute running around the city gathering up sunflora.

the actual fight wasn't too exceptional. I MISS THE SWSH GYM MUSIC. it got me so pumped and i would genuinely go and listen to it even when i wasn't playing the game.

also no strong feelings about brassius himself... i feel like a lot of the designs in this gen (both pokemon and characters) have been a little hit-or-miss for me. or, at least, i enjoy them more in official art than i do seeing them in the game. this is another gym leader where i'm not as big on his design, and i was 100% a hubert von vestra (from fire emblem: three houses) fan.

anyway. that done, titan time.

ooh, okay, i like how when i'm hunting the titan pokemon, arven actually shows up to join me. that's actually pretty nice, since it makes you feel a bit less alone on the journey. i know nemona calls you after a gym leader, too, but! the presence of another character actually being there is nice.

also, man... i was looking up the customization in this game a little. it's honestly really disappointing that after all the customization we had in swsh that we just have four whole outfits in this game, even if we can get accessories. i went to a school that had uniforms!! i'm done with this!! and the second i would've been out of school and didn't have to adhere to a dress code (and been liable for detentions for uniform infractions) you bet i would've been wearing literally anything else. if this game gets an update at some point... i really hope they'll just give us outfits. (without it being paid dlc...)

oh... finding the herba mystica with arven and him immediately talking about how he wants to get "him" to eat some... interesting.

this feels very cozy.

honestly enjoying arven so far!! he's so into food and i love him just carrying around this book to constantly consult with it. ALSO THIS SCENE WAS REALLY CUTE where i chose to feed miraidon my sandwich, and then when i acted surprised about there not being any left for me, he gave my character half his sandwich lksjdlgj a good guy.

HUH... curious about arven's motivations and what he's feeding.

okay... stopping with this particular post for now, just because i've uploaded so many images to it. i've made a little progress since then... sort of? mostly i've been running around the world trying to get to more pokemon centers, and potentially get more pokemon. i'm still trying to round out my team, but i haven't been... that enamoured with a lot of the pokemon designs in this gen so far.

i'm currently just leveling some of my pokemon to take on mela, since my team didn't really have any pokemon in it that were great against fire types.

i also managed to get to another city... i tried looking up more about the customization and it looked like we don't get additional hairstyles (other than the very few seen at the salon) after all? if anyone has seen otherwise, please let me know ljslkjgdk i also found a bunch of other shops, and i'm also... not impressed with the accessory selection, either. just feeling pretty let down by the customization, which is a shame, because i'm having fun with the game otherwise!!
