I dunno why this is in my head but: Mordelia asks Simon to walk her down the aisle.

There is way more Snowbaz than I planned, but it's probably the reason why it's not as sad as I thought it would be when I started writing. Enjoy! CW for some grief.

“You're here, finally. Isn't the best man supposed to handle this part?” Simon asks, closing the door behind him and wiping imaginary sweat off his brow. He lifts up the torn veil in his left hand, waves it around, and throws the half empty box of tissues at Baz's chest. For emphasis. They watch it bounce off and hit the floor with a sad noise.

“Shall I remind you she also has a best woman, Snow?” Baz huffs, pulling out his handkerchief (from the set monogrammed with his new initials, Simon's gift for their fifth wedding anniversary) to erase any trace of actual sweat from his face. “Trust my sister to put together a bloody squad of best people and bridespeople and yet we need even more help to fix this disaster of a wedding.”

Simon smiles, taking Baz's hand from where it's threatening to destroy four hours of hairstyling and bringing it to his lips. “It's not a disaster, babe.” He kisses Baz's knuckles, softly. “You've outdone yourself. I'm almost jealous our wedding wasn't so... fancy.”

Fancy is the wrong world to describe the way Baz managed to blend traditions and a good amount of Marriage-Is-A-Patriarchal-Institution-Fuck-The-System vibes in a seemingly effortless display of classy punkness, but they're not here to fight over vocabulary. (Though maybe it would help Baz relax.) (They always have the best sex after playing Scrabble to the death.)

And he definitely isn't jealous. He could never. Baz knows.

“This is just how weddings go when you're on this side trying to make things run smoothly,” he adds. “I've been here before.” He drops the veil to take Baz's other hand, standing on his tiptoes to press a kiss between his eyebrows. He can feel the frown melt away just a little.

It's sweet, how much Baz is putting into this day, but Simon wishes he could take a breath and see that he's doing great, and that he's not alone in this. (Mordelia did put together an impressive bride's team.)

“I don't think you had to fight with two horses and two elderly women who might or might not be royalty at Nora's wedding, though,” Baz sniffles, and Simon grins. He was waiting for Baz to spill the tea about what had kept him occupied for half an hour, right in the middle of Bride Crisis Level 10.

“Nothing posh for Nora, but we struggled a bit to rent a forklift on such short notice for the reception.” Simon runs his hands down Baz's chest, smoothing the wrinkles on his shirt. He ditched waistcoat and jacket hours ago, before descending into battle as Head Best Person and Wedding Planner Extraordinaire, and the shirt is starting to pay the price. “And Will did have a Duchess on their guest list. I've seen it all.”

Sometimes Simon thinks they're lucky that Penny basically eloped and didn't need anyone's help to tie the knot, but it makes this the first wedding Baz has been deeply involved with (except for his own), and the stakes are high. He's too much of a perfectionist, and this is his little sister. Simon's surprised he hasn't had a nervous breakdown yet.

“Leave the horses and the ancient ladies to someone else.” Simon kisses Baz's forehead again and points to the door. “I think you should be there with her. Especially because I have to practice walking.”

“Simon,” Mordelia slurs, trying to get up from the sofa and failing, her body swallowed by the cushions once again. “I need you to be my Dad.”

Simon stops gathering the empty bottles and stares at her, struggling to figure out how much of that sentence is Mordelia's consciousness, how much is the alcohol speaking, and how much is Simon's hearing playing dirty tricks. 37 is too young to be old and deaf, right? Not that you need to be old to have hearing problems, but does he look old? Does he look like someone who could have a 26-year-old daughter?

Christ. He's just recovered from his quarter life crisis, he isn't ready for the next one. Fuck.

Even in her intoxicated state, Mordelia seems to notice Simon's distress and find it funny, because she snorts and pats the sofa next to her until he sits down.

It takes her ages to speak up again, and when she does Simon's sure his ears have stopped working for real.

“I'm getting married.”

His eyes shoot to her empty ring finger, and Mordelia snorts again.

“Duh, of course I proposed.” She fights with the too-soft cushions to sit up, fold her legs and lean with her side against the backrest, facing Simon. He hasn't been able to open his mouth yet. He can't believe he's been stunned into silence. “Aster is getting me a ring, too, but I beat them to it, so.” She wiggles her fingers in front of his face, and he pushes them away to pull her into a hug.

“Fuck, Mordy,” he says. He clears his throat. “I'm so happy for you. And proud.” Simon remembers every single moment of the day he proposed, even though it's been more than six years. It's not for the weak of heart, not even when you're almost absolutely certain you will get a three letter answer.

She frees herself from his arms and beams at him. “You're the first of the family to know. I want to tell Mum and my siblings in person, but no one's ever around when I need them.” She crosses her arms over her chest. The resemblance to Baz is uncanny when she pouts. “Baz's back from his school trip tomorrow, right? You should come for dinner. I want to ask him to be my best man.�� Simon nods, smiling. He had quite different plans to welcome his husband home after five days apart, but he'll survive.

Mordelia's grin comes back for a second, then it's gone again. She suddenly looks completely sober, and the mood shift makes Simon sit up straighter.

“But I didn't invite you today because you were my only option. I really want you to...” She sighs, hiding her face behind a hand. “You know, I was so sure I'd never get married, years ago. Or that I'd marry a girl and he wouldn't approve and I'd be alone on my wedding day. But then he told you...”

She trails off, but she doesn't need to add anything else. After all, Simon's the one who told her about Malcolm Grimm giving him his blessing to marry Baz.“Take care of my son,” he said. “I wish I could see you two get married.”

Simon regrets not proposing sooner, sometimes, but he doesn't regret doing it when he knew they were ready for it. And they couldn't have known...

He rests his hand palm up on his thigh, and she takes it.

“And now I'm getting married, and I know he wouldn't hate me for not marrying a man, though I'm not marrying a woman either, and who knows what he would've said about it.” She laughs, but it comes out as a choked sob. “And, well, he's not here.”

Simon squeezes her hand. She's like Baz, when they talk about this kind of feelings. They need grounding touches and no meaningless words, even though Simon would mean all of them.

“And I know it's stupid, but even when I hated the idea of marriage I always imagined myself in a long white dress, with my father at my side, being proud of me.” She wipes her eyes with her sleeve, and when she looks back at Simon there's something fierce in her expression. “I want—I want—I would be really grateful if you walked me down the aisle, Simon. You and Baz are the most functioning adults in my life, which is honestly worrying, and I thought I'd pick the one least likely to start sobbing and make me trip on my dress.”

Simon laughs. It doesn't come out like a choked sob, but almost. “You clearly overestimate me,” he says, and she playfully slap his head.

“Shut up,” she grins, but her eyes are still serious. “So, will you do it?”

“Of course, Mordy. I'd be honoured to be your Dad.”

She groans into a pillow. “I know I started it, but please, stop.”

“Never, kiddo.”

I love the way he is looking at Mama Cass and giving her his full attention while she sings for him .Can you imagine being her and him using his charm to convince her to sing . 😘

At one point in the night, Mama Cass asked Elvis (in a rather derisive way) 'Why do you do this? Why do you sing these same gospel songs over and over like this?' Instead of being offended, Elvis asked her if she had ever tried it...ever tried singing a song with a gospel quartet backing her up. She laughed and said that she had not. He challenged her to try it just once. After some hesitation and cajoling, she finally decided she knew the words to Amazing Grace and would sing it. She did and The Imperials fell in and provided back up harmonies. They sang it all the way through and when she finished, she turned to Elvis and told him that having those voices surround hers as she sang was the most indescribable feeling she had ever experienced. She said 'Now I get it. Now I understand why this means so much to you'.

Morally Grey Characters in SFF Books

Here are some book recommendations for speculative fiction (science fiction, fantasy, horror...) with morally grey or morally ambigious characters! This is definitely something I look for and I love having a twisted protagonist I can follow! Makes things a lot more interesting, I think.

The Poppy War, by R.F. Kuang

This is definitely a must-read when looking for morally ambigious characters, and if you've been looking for that then you might've seen this series around. This fantasy trilogy follows Rin, an impoverished orphan living in the Nikara Empire, who aces the Keju, a test meant to select the nation's richest into military colleges. Selected into one of the most prestigious schools, Rin must now face issues of colorism, gender and class, while the possibility of war dangles over the college's head.

Don't be fooled by the synopsis, though. The Poppy War is not a magical-school type of story. This series revolves around Rin's corruption arc - which Ms. Kuang crafts incredibly. The character development and the attention to detail with the world-building in The Poppy War are both impressive, especially considering that the first book in the trilogy was Ms. Kuang's debut. Rin's decisions will leave you screaming, crying and (you guessed it) throwing up, as she gradually destroys everything around her.

She Who Became The Sun, by Shelley Parker-Chan

Another debut, She Who Became The Sun is definitely reminiscant of The Poppy War in the sense that it not only features morally grey characters, but is also set in an Imperial China-inspired world. Here, we follow Monk Zhu, who assumes her brother's identity, sure that she is destined for greatness, and the people she meets in her quest to achieve this. Simultaneously, we read about Ouyang, an eunuch general who serves – and is lowkey in love with – Esen, the son of a province's Prince and the war they're involved in.

Ouyang and Zhu are prime morally grey material. Zhu is motivated by her desire to achieve greatness, which was profecized for her brother, and, as she assumed his identity, she believes is now her destiny. Ouyang, on the other hand, is a more spoiler-ly case - but trust me when I say his decisions are questionable at best.

This is another case of masterful character development, beautifully crafted by Mx. Parker-Chan. Not to mention their writing is absolutely incredible here, flowerly without being too much, and their inclusion of the themes of gender is so well done.

Oh, yeah, did I mention this is queer as all hell?

The Traitor Baru Cormorant, by Seth Dickinson

Since we're talking about books that are queer as hell, I give you: The Traitor Baru Cormorant! I finished this one the other day, actually, but this trilogy, soon to be a quartet, is definitely a must-read if you're into morally grey protagonists. The Traitor Baru Cormorant is about (say it with me) Baru Cormorant, a native of Tananoke, a small island nation that is conquered by the Empire of the Masks. The Masquerade's homophobic and sexist policies affect Baru's family as one of her fathers is killed for being queer. Baru swears revenge, and she knows exactly how she'll exact it: from the inside.

The Traitor Baru Cormorant follows her path of revenge as she inflitrates the bureaucracy of this Empire. So, as you can probably guess, it's a very politically-driven book, and it's for sure very dense. I would definitely recommend it, though, if you're up for it -- The Traitor Baru Cormorant has probably the best representations of moral greyness I've ever read. Baru's character is so layered and complex. Her every move is questionable, though you know her motives are good, all focused on the liberation of her home, Taranoke, from imperial rule.

A Game of Thrones, by George R. R. Martin

Another dense, political one, but this definitely needs to be on the list. Mr. Martin is a master at creating dense plots with the most complex characters you've ever read - and none of them are good. Every single character (except for maybe Ned Stark??) in this series makes questionable decisions, and as the plot progresses they only get more fucked up. The A Song of Ice and Fire series, also known as Game of Thrones, the title of its first book, follows the political situation of Westeros and its surronding countries, as its noble families fight for power in the aftermath of a rebellion.

Although this is definitely a must if you're into grey morality, Mr. Martin's masterpiece comes as a big commitment. The series currently spans approximately 5,000 pages across five books, and it has been more than a decade in the making. Fans (me included) have been waiting for the mythical Winds of Winter for years, and after that is published, there's still A Dream of Spring, which hasn't even begun to be written. It's important to keep that in mind before diving into this one, but let me be the first one to tell you, it's definitely worth it.

"Jaune Gets A Gun AU - Day 2" Star Wars - Stormtroopers (Various)

Inspired by @howlingday's RU-JA-GUN-CON

Ruby and Pyrrha rushed to catch up to Tiny Tina as she dragged Jaune towards on of the booths when she suddenly stopped.

Tiny Tina: (Points to a dfiierent booth) Ohhhhhhhh.

Jaune: (Turns to see what Tina was pointing at) Tina?

Tiny Tina: Let's try THAT one!

Before Jaune, Ruby or Pyrrha could object she Tiny Tina yanks Jaune in away from the orginal booth.

????/???? : Hey! Come back!

The quartet closes on their new destination rather quickly, but as they do Ruby and Tiny Tina start to question the decision, only for Jaune to take the lead.

????: How may I help you?

Jaune: We're interested in seeing what your booth has to offer, if that's not an issue.

ST Commander: You're not Republic Loyalists, are you?

Jaune and his friends take a step back as several more white armoured personnel step out from behind a curtain at the back of the rather large booth.

Ruby: Republic? Never heard of it.

ST Commander: Excellent! So you're interested in joining the Imperial Army, I take it?

Pyrrha/Ruby: NO!

ST Commander: Really? Can I ask why?

Jaune: (Rubbing the back of his neck) Well... um...

ST Commander: (The armoured figure waves his hand in the direction of a well laid out display) Because WE do have a large selection of equipment that is issued to our members... free of charge.

Jaune/Ruby/Tiny Tina: That's a lot of guns.

ST Commander: That is but a small selection of what is available to our recruits. We also have this!

Ruby/Tiny Tina: Ohhhh... wow!

Jaune: That's given to new recruits?

ST Commander: After taking a mandatory training course.

Pyrrha: Ah Jaune?

Jaune: Yes Pyr?

Pyrrha: Aren't you already ENLISTED, Jaune?

ST Commander: Is that true?

Jaune: (Rubbing the back of his neck) Well, yeah, it is.

Ruby and Tiny Tina approach the display case, as the armoured figure, Pyrrha and Jaune continue thier discussion.

ST Commander: May I inquire with whom?

Jaune: United Federation's Mobile Infantry. Heard of them?

ST Commander: Sounds familiar.

Ruby/Tiny Tina: Hey, I know these guns!

Jaune/Pyrrha: You do?

Tiny Tina: (Eyes the commander) What, I think I remember you guys as well... the Imperial Army...

Ruby: I do too! There was an article about them in "Strike Forces Monthly"... you guys can't shoot worth shi...

Jaune: Swear Jar!

ST Commander: Lies and slander!

Tiny Tina: I read that article. Massive arsenal of good weapons, decent armour, probably one of the largest military forces just behind the Imperium of Man... but totally unable to hit the broadside of a barn.

ST Commander: (Flustered and embarrassed noises)

Pyrrha: (Looks at the commander with a disapproving look) Is that true?

ST Commander: No! Preposterous! Not based on any facts at all!

ST Commander: Why are you grinning like that?

Tiny Tina: (Pulls something from behind her back that looks suspiciously like a bomb) Just a little test... this is a confetti bomb, totally harmless.

Jaune/Pyrrha: Tina?

Ruby: So have those two sitting on the bike looking things, take three shots... they hit it... we apologize.

ST Commander : (Sweating, though no one can tell) And if they don't?

Ruby/Tiny Tina: We fu...

Jaune: Swear Jar!

Ruby: Ahem... we bid you a civil goodbye, and check out some other booths. Deal?

St Commander: (Sighing) Deal.

Tiny Tina: (As she sets the bomb fifteen feet from the two troopers) Alright, baby! Shut your face and shoot something!

Pyrrha: Oh my! That's pathetic!

ST Commander: It's not our fault! It's these helmets!

Ruby: It's a poor soldier that blames their equipment. Maybe next time?

The quartet watches as the whole squad of armour troopers drop their heads and shoulders in utter defeat.

Jaune: So, where to now?

Alright, time for me to geek the hell out, because if there is one DnD creation I am most proud of, it would to be making the faction know as "The Tirnanosian Empire."

To describe the Tirnanosian Empire, imagine to yourself, "What if the Feywild industrialized and became an interdimensional colonial regime?"

In the vast realms of fantasy, the Tirnanosian Empire emerges as a civilization of industrial imperial fairies and feyfolk, possessing a unique blend of steampunk-inspired technology and enchanting fey magic. Originating from the mystical Feyrealms, they wield an arsenal of muskets, flintlocks, swords, bombs, cannons, and even deploy more fantastical units such as pixie-dust-powered tanks, clockwork spearmen, and mystical Fey creatures of all shapes and sizes. These forces would march through gates torn into the fabric of reality between the Feywild and the lands beyond.

At the heart of their Empire stands Empress Venable, known far and wide as the Violet Monarch, a formidable ruler with an unwavering determination to spread her vision of "Order" across the realms. Guiding the Empire's colonies in the mortal realms are her agents, four powerful fairies each assigned a season of the year to rule the colonies as they see fit, also known as "The Eternal Quartet."

You are given the power to produce any one musical, but all roles must be played by the opposite gender from usual. The musical can be all drag (Alexander Hamilton is a man played by a woman) or you can switch pronouns and names as appropriate (Alexandria Hamilton is a woman played by a woman). What musical do you put on and how?

Me, I'm torn between drag Music Man and gender reversal King and I. 🤔

Music Man would be more fun, has lots of great character roles for a variety of ages, and the roles are very gendered in that 1950s way most people don't think about too hard (until, say, they see a gaggle of drag queens singing "Pick-a-Little, Talk-a-Little", or drag king Harold Hill's rendition of "The Sadder But Wiser Girl"). Plus, we don't see enough women singing in barbershop quartets.

But, if I could only do one, I'd go with The King and I, just to see a complicated female ruler with a vast harem of pretty men (we will ignore the logistics of all the children; perhaps she adopted). Imagine, idk, Patti Lupone (I am terrible at both casting and naming stars) singing "A Puzzlement." And that's before getting into every time she'd imperiously ask "Why is your head higher than mine?" ::fans self:: Someone get Broadway Miscast on that stat.

School Days

Ok, so as I said in this post, I am very much a Numair stan, so when Tamora Pierce announced a million years ago that there was a Numair Origin Story trilogy in the works, I was PSYCHED. Then I waited with the rest of the fandom for I-don't-even-know-how-many years until we got the first book. And while I and the rest of the fandom wait patiently for the second Numair book, let's talk Tempests and Slaughter.

I made no secret that Emperor Mage was my favorite Immortals Quartet book, and that Numair was a lot of the reason for that, but I also really enjoyed Carthak as a setting. That we get to see even more of Carthak in this book is a HUGE plus. We get the much-vaunted university, we get the arena, we get some of the city, and we get some of the rivers and green spaces. Objectively the arena and the university are the primary locations, and I loved the educations that Arram gets in both places and how the imperial family and imperial power structures are so deeply woven into both spaces.

And Arram comes to realize this over the course of the book, even going so far as to realize that he could leave the toxic structures once he achieves mastery. That realization is somewhat complicated by the fact that his is both a student who finds his way to teachers who value him and are willing to teach HIM rather than the politically acceptable curriculum, and the fact that he is roommates and BFFs with Ozorne Tasikhe. Plus, the fact that Varice is dedicated to protecting and supporting Ozorne...that's gonna get complicated in future books.

This is where I feel like it's important to point out that reading Tempests and Slaughter after Emperor Mage had the potential to land like The Phantom Menace did, because there were a lot of similarities. We KNOW where Ozorne, Varice, and Arram end up. We can see all the foreshadowing and we are writhing in our seats as we see every single one of the red flags that were always there for Ozorne. We can see the setups to payoffs we know are coming but don't have yet.

Where Tempests and Slaughter stands head and shoulders above Phantom Menace though is in not simplifying characters because they have a pre-set trajectory and pre-set growth they have to go through to get them to where we know they're going. Ozorne, Arram, and Varice are still complex, compelling characters, and knowing where they're going does not in any way make the journey less interesting. This book does more than just fill in a backstory gap. It is itself a story that weaves into the wider Tortall universe. It's really, really damn good, and it has things to say independent of the expected ending in Emperor Mage.

This book has things to say about class, power, sociopolitical institutions like the arena, and the politics of education institutions. It also has a lot to say about what learning is and where it occurs. I have a PhD, I was in university for eleven years. There is a huge part of me that holds a deep, complex, and oft-uncomfortable love for these insitutions, and having Tempests and Slaughter both recognize the good things universities can do and also highlight the hideous harms they can do was just an incredible experience.

As with all Tamora Pierce books, I cannot recommend this one enough. I will say that we have been waiting for a while for book 2 and will probably wait a while more, but the wait has never not been worth it with this author, so hang on to patience folks, and definitely pick up this book.

They don’t break up, but it is a significant fight.
