Are some musicians really that bad at making the long play records? No, I don't think this might be the answer, I would claim some just didn't see the use of them. For instance, Elvis did release a lot of albums, but many of them are just a couple of hits and some filler put together. Still, we shouldn't see this as something bad, we must understand the context – Mr. Presley had a set of different priorities, he wasn't Sinatra with his song cycles, but I believe he would've been open to something like that, had he lived. Moreover, the ramshackle feeling of his platters does cause us to miss a multitude of gems, including the one on the link. Yes, that might be the biggest tragedy of those players who didn't put much effort into their LPs, some of their great tunes became ignored.

February 23, 1973
Ann-Margret was in the audience on Elvis’ closing night. To Lamar, who was in charge of the lights, Elvis said: “Leave the light on her, man, I just want to look at her.”
L-R: Terry Blackwood, Sherman Andrus, Jim Murray, Cass Elliot (The Mamas & the Papas), Joe Moscheo, Armond Morales, Marty Allen, Elvis, Linda Thompson, Red West, Lorraine Allen.
At one point in the night, Mama Cass asked Elvis (in a rather derisive way) ‘Why do you do this? Why do you sing these same gospel songs over and over like this?’ Instead of being offended, Elvis asked her if she had ever tried it…ever tried singing a song with a gospel quartet backing her up. She laughed and said that she had not. He challenged her to try it just once.
After some hesitation and cajoling, she finally decided she knew the words to Amazing Grace and would sing it. She did and The Imperials fell in and provided back up harmonies. They sang it all the way through and when she finished, she turned to Elvis and told him that having those voices surround hers as she sang was the most indescribable feeling she had ever experienced. She said ‘Now I get it. Now I understand why this means so much to you’.

Note: the lowercase king not the uppercase King Who just had His birthday on December 25th. My teen idol was Elvis…
