Happy Sunday Ask-A-Thon, week 4 for @ask-a-thon . What inspires you the most to write, what makes you want to write and what do you treasure most about your writing?

Inspiration comes to me from everyday life really, the more I read and watch shows I love and just write the more ideas I get! Interact with things you love and inspiration usually follows afterward.

My already existing stories continue to motivate me to keep writing. Falling in love with my characters more everyday makes me want to write. Makes me want to share their story and share my love. I treasure my ability to somehow come up with cool sentences. Like even in not creative writing I’m able to incorporate cool ways to say something. It’s kinda like blacking out and then you wake up and see you baked perfect bread. Thanks for the ask!

Soooo I just went looking for someone else doing the Motivation Experiment and you seem to be the only active person except Zac... I like your rule of which WIP to write for! My question is for SCAL-- why 13? In a meta sense, that is. Why did you have the pivotal age for Near be 13?

Hi hi! Thanks! I thought it would be a smart way to keep myself from getting burnout from only working on one WIP the entire time. (Never mind the fact that I rarely answer asks anyway because I keep forgetting, but shhhhh.) Also thanks for the ask!

At first, I chose 13 because, well, a lot of people consider it an unlucky number. So one of the worst things in Near's life happening on his 13th birthday just made sense.

When I started worldbuilding I decided I also wanted a 'pre-adult' sort of period, kind of like our teens. And when thinking about it, I thought 13 would be a pretty good number. You're young, but not too young. It's the kind of age where you start to grow into yourself - at least, from what I've noticed.

That tied together to make 13 the perfect timing, because Near becoming a 'pre-adult' would also be the perfect time for his mother to tell him that they're actually Hallows. You wouldn't tell it to a child, but you also don't want to wait until someone is an adult.

And so in one life she was killed right on the day she wanted to tell him, and in the other life, she got to tell him. Which really makes his 13th birthday something for him.

For this ask I wrote 128 words for SCAL, putting my motivation experiment total at 776 words.

Prompt 29 | Fall(ing) | 100 Word Drabble

The Traitor is touched with Blight. The Villain can see it from the blackened hands to the cloudy sadistic tendencies she is falling into more and more. He almost feels sorry for her; the Corruption that awaited Humanity only holds one destination. The sympathy erases when she grabs him and continues. He screams as she abuses his body, holds onto his willpower even as her Blight tries to bleed into him. He couldn’t afford corruption; he wouldn’t fall like her. He drags air, grinds his teeth as he turns to her with defiance. “You won’t win.” She beats him more.

Prompt 30 | Sore | 100 Word Drabble

The Hero is a sore subject for the Traitor. It only takes mentioning her, and the Traitor gives him broken bones for the comment. It is laughable, how much hate she holds for the Hero. If the Villain didn’t know better, he would’ve tried to use that hate to entice her. But that isn’t an option; the Traitor’s unhinged and chaotic, the Villain noting how she reeks of Blight. She is too close to Corruption; too far from Salvation. “You won’t make it.” He regrets the thought instantly. She stares him and he notes the chaos before she breaks him.

Prompt 31 | Pinned(ing) | 100 Word Drabble

He wakes up without air. He jerks, tries to move, tries to breathe, but the pressure around his throat is steady and there’s weight pinning him down. He writhes against the hold, everything blurring into darkness and static. And then the pressure is off, pain slicing into his neck as his attacker is dragged away from him. His chokes, lungs taking in oxygen without cooperation. He chokes as his body instantly moves, throwing him away and curling hard as he tries to breathe. It is almost too long, but he does breathe, body going limp as he drinks in air.

Hiya Zac!! 100 words have been added to Goblin Theft Auto's first of five short stories, titled "Misfits of Penwood City!"

Leshi was confused. “What are you doing here?”

There was no response from them, other than the both of them grabbing Leshi and dragging her out into the brisk fall air and surrounding her with dark green trees that stretched up very high, a soft dirt ground, and a bright sun whose rays were muted, beaming through the leaves and scattering their light all throughout the forest. What a marvelous sight, Leshi thought.

She turned her gaze to her house, and waved at her mother before the misfits held her hand, and dragged her along with them. This was something she didn’t expect for sure.

Eros, what is the most important lesson you've learned in life?

The most important lesson during my existence... I believe that would be the idea that the world is not as unfriendly as it can seem. It took me quite a long time to find people that I trust. Now, they have shown me more than I would have ever experienced alone.

Are there any events in your life you wish you could relive, whether it be to simply enjoy it or to change it?

I should very much like to return to when my children were young. I think many parents feel the same. Of course, I love them at any age, but I do miss holding them in my arms. They used to grab at my hair and antlers with their adorably tiny hands, and they were so innocent and happy, then.

If you could time travel to any time period BEFORE you were born, what would you choose?

I was not born. Instead, I awakened, as all primordials do. I suppose there was a time before my existence... if I were to actually go back before then, that would be quite a paradoxical problem, I would imagine. Otherwise, I would have liked to meet Desius, the primordial embodiment of death, when they were young and new; when they were my age. They have experienced much more of the world than I, and despite their rather cruel exterior, I know they care about me more than they would ever admit.

What is - in your opinion - the most beautiful thing about your world?

Beauty surrounds us. It is the heartbeats of living creatures thrumming through the ground. The sound of birdsong and of wind through the trees. It is the love I feel for my family and my creations. The storms brought on by my daughter's emotions. The freedom of my son's laughter. The soft voice of my lover as they read stories aloud. In my opinion, existence itself is the most beautiful thing about my world.

So, Maeve, what is your favorite thing about living in your world? If you could change ONE THING about it, what would it be?

"My favorite thing about living in Little Willow? Heh, you've got to be joking, right? The people are shitty, there's nothing to do, and the woods-"

"Well, fine. If you really expect an answer, I suppose the library's alright. I could sit in there for hours just skimming through the old news articles."

"And if I could change only one thing? Well, I'm sure there will be an uproar from the old fogies just for saying this, but I'd burn those woods straight to the ground. They've always given me the creeps, and I know I'm not the only one."

What do you consider to be the most important thing about life?

"The most important thing about life? Well, I don't really know if I believe this myself, but my brother would say it's love. Hell, he'd probably go on this long, sappy tangent about it. Get all teary-eyed. The works. I really don't know, though. Because if love were all that important, then why is it always letting you down? I can count on one hand the amount of good things that have come from me loving something. So, I don't know."

"What? Why are you looking at me like that. I'm not some sad charity case you can cry over to make yourself feel better, you know. Speaking of charity, though. I guess money's pretty important. It'll be the thing that lets me get out of this godforsaken place eventually."

"I think it's got to be nice. It has to be, right? You wouldn't go through all this bullshit just to end up somewhere just as bad. Of course, I guess some people would say that's the point of hell, but I don't really think I believe in any of that. I just want there to be something nice at the end of it all. Because there are people who deserve it..."

If you were to run your own tumblr blog, what would it be like? What would you post about? What kind of aura would you try to give off?

"Oh, that's an easy one. Do you have any idea the amount of content I'd have just documenting all the stupid things my brother and his friends have done? They're always out there creating chaos for everyone in town. Not that I'm complaining. And who knows, maybe there are people out there who will be able to relate to the struggle of being related to one of the biggest idiots in the world."

"For real, though. I'd like to be a friend to those who need it, or at least be able to lend an ear to other's struggles. I don't think there enough people out there who truly give a fuck, and I do. I know, I really seem the type, don't I? Well, appearances can be deceiving."

"Now, if you're done asking questions. I've got to go if I want to be fashionably late to work. This was fun though, come by whenever you want. I might even mean it next time I offer you tea."

Hello, Pax :D I hope you're doing well.

So, I saw Emry Clockpunk on your little list of topics you were wanting to ramble about, and I am very curious about all of it. I do admit, I'm not as familiar with Clockpunk, so I'd like to hear about how it works in your world and what role it plays in peoples' lives.

Hi! Thank you, I'm doing pretty good and I hope you are too!! Happy WBW :D

Since Clockpunk is traditionally based in clockwork and mechanical constructs (aka without electricity or engines, generally), I have taken it in a ~magical~ direction in the Ehlverse, and the people of Emarye are the ones who tend to get the most use out of it!

The funny thing about it, though, is that it's way more reliant on the Dwarven Starmetals than it has any right to be, considering there aren't any Starforges in Emarye and they don't do enough (legal) trade with the Dwarves to reasonably power the infrastructure they do... Corruption and black markets are, as it turns out, not a new thing over there, despite how much some politicians blame the Shadow of Fowden for it.

I think the most obvious/fun aspect of Clockpunk I've got going so far is that, rather than steam engines, their trains have big ol' wind up keys used to start up the wheels! They don't use any fuel, just rely on the self-perpetuating momentum inherent to Voltimony, and wind it backwards when they need to slow or stop.

Another thing I've used this kind of clockwork approach to is wheelchairs! Where we in the real world have electric wheelchairs, a lot of Emry folks have ones with keys and levers that start up Starmetal clockwork like that of the trains, and can control the speed with buttons by their hands!

[And because I'm talking about them, here's a sneak peek at the one featured in the WIP of the next Peoples of the Ehlverse illustration.]

I'm also participating in the great motivation experiment, albeit non-traditionally today (and definitely not for every ask ever), and...

2. What fanfic do you wish you got more response on?

Heh, any story from my Monster Eater verse. I mean I get it, it is not a story for everyone and I do write it mainly for myself and my bestie but like ugh it would be nice if it got more love. As far as more like non-murdery horror tales, I think it would be cool if people vibed more with Becoming One, Two, and One Again. I love how it turned out, and I wish more people thought it was cool too.

Hello! Happy Tender Tuesday. Idk how these work, but it looks fun! Tell us about some found family(ies) you have in your stories!

I am not answering this question late, time is an illusion.

Found family, ah, a trope very dear to me.

One of the obvious found family choices is the Wonderland team. They were tied together by whatever higher power there is, but instead of eventually breaking apart like they were expected to, they just clung together. This is their emotional support found family, sir. They will not be leaving.

Of course, some of the members are actually family (Davy and Desmond, the Tweedle Twins), but there's really not much difference in the way they view each other and the way they view the rest. I mean, of course you're gonna think about your twin a bit differently than other close family, but other than that?

And of course, eventually Ace will become a part of it, too. Technically spoilers but also it's not like I've ever tried to hide it, lmao.

Something about them just makes me all mushy on the inside. Like yeah, they were forced together technically, but the way they all love each other - it's delicious.

Another found family is in BfoM, Kane, Rizurol, Mian, Ayen and Hael. Rizurol doesn't like to admit it, but Kane isn't the only one who emotionally adopted Azriel's kids. Kane is a lot clearer in it, though. Rizurol tries to keep xyr distance, because well, the kids are royalty, and xe only sort of technically. Kane on the other hand does not care. He has adopted them. They're his kids. He will fight you for them, and you will lose. Mian at first has some trouble seeing Ayen as a brother, but that's because Azriel always told him he can't trust Ayen - after all, Ayen is an elf. Once he gets past that, he will do anything for Ayen - including fighting Azriel.

In SCAL what I've planned is something that starts as found family and drifts into "Oh wait, I have the hots for them" and this would be between Near, Owen, and Val. Yes, 'them' is plural here. Although it's probably Owen's or Val's reaction. Near will probably be a lot more panicky.

They do start as something of a found family, because all of them experience some kind of pressure. Val and Owen because they're the heirs, amongst other things, and Near, well... He is one of the last two living Hallows. There comes a whole lot of pressure with that. And that paired with Owen's admiration for Near, Val not caring about status whatsoever unless he has to, and Near being desperate for safety, which they give him... They end up pretty close, and they only keep drifting closer.

There are more found families in my stories, but a lot of those don't actually show up, like Kane and his old master.

Fun Fact: Arthur Conan Doyle did not enjoy writing the Sherlock Holmes stories, and killed off Holmes in an attempt to give himself an excuse to stop writing. After extensive protest by readers, he was essentially forced to resurrect the detective. (Reportedly he once said "If in the future I am only known as the man who created Sherlock Holmes, I will consider my life a failure.")
