(This was for a zine titled 'Tales From Hyrule' featuring folklore surrounding ancient Hyrule that I did a long time ago! I forgot to upload it, so in favor of Tears of the Kingdom's release, here's some ethereal art!)

I don’t think people talk about the messed up relationship between the goddess hylia and her chosen enough. Like, Link takes a LOT of nonsense through his generations, but specifically the fact that Zelda spends all of BOTW desperately looking for her approval and her to speak to her just once, spending all her time devoted to this destiny, while Link (while he is very much dealing with his own stuff, THANKS HYLIA) can just. call her up. she speaks to him no problem all the time. we exchange her objects for hearts and stamina the whole game.

And Link doesn’t even seem surprised! In both games this happens in! Like he had memory loss in BOTW yeah but for it to be so ingrained in him that he doesn’t startle TALKING TO A GODDESS is astounding. Just, thinking about that. If Link could do that and knew the whole time. Wondering why she only spoke to him. Knowing it would break Zelda if she knew, asking hylia why. Anyways i’m back on my LOZ nonsense the one chosen by an fickle god trope is very dear to me

new hyperfixation coming thru, that means new drabble and half done oneshot lets gooooo

anyways heres the drabble

Wild didn’t pray, that was something sky noticed that, he also noticed the way wilds eyes narrowed and his lips got tighter whenever someone mentioned hylia, and the way his eyebrows furrowed and he retreated into himself whenever he stood infront of a statue.

Sky found rhis odd.

Whenever he tried to mention it to Wild he would always change the subject and then avoid him for the rest of the day, so sky learned ro drop it along time ago.

He only ever learned the reason when they finally found themselves at wilds hyrule, Wild had been so exited after along time without being able to roam around the large yet very familiar land. Sky found himself sitting next to The zelda of that time, Flora, while watching warrior twilight legand and wild have a sheild surfing race. They’ve been there for a week and he noticed a similar pattern with Flora, but he figured hed shoot his shot.

"you and Wild act weird whenever we mention hylia"

Wow just great job sky, definitely doesn’t sound judgy at all.

Flora definitely seemed surprised. But with a sigh and a small nod she, unlike Wild, finally opened up.

"she hasn’t been kind to us, she would never answer me not until Link, well" Sky could fill in the blank, hes heard the story before.

"she would answer link, honestly I was resentful for a long time because of that fact. But it didn’t do him any good. Hylia couldn’t help either of us" she seemed so sad even a little angry when she said her namw, Sky couldn’t help but be a little upset at that fact.

"Did you know link pulled the sword when he was only 11, he was knighted on his 12th birthday, Im only a year older then him… I don’t know how he feels about that, I do know he doesn’t pray often anymore. He doesn't think hes the real chosen one, says he died along time again that hes-hes a mockary of Hylias beloved Chosen knight"

Nothing was said after that, nothing really coukd be said. Sky tried just be with wild a bit more after that, learn to understand him some more. he didn’t know what else he could do.

BotW/TotK/AoC Zelda's relationship with divinity and religion is such a dynamic. She is literally the reincarnated human form of one of their goddesses, and blessed with the power of another. And she's sitting there, praying desperately to herself and wondering why no one is answering. Praying to the other three goddesses and wondering why all they do is look at her expectantly. Of course Hylia aids and answers Link, she has loved him since he was the First Hero. But in this lifetime instead of unlocking and mastering her powers with ease, she spends literally an entire decade screaming at herself "Why don't you love me?!?!" expecting an answer from the outside, and growing increasingly frustrated with herself for this fact, and then getting mad at her boyfriend because "Why do I love you more than I love me!?!?" (While he stands there with hearteyes, wondering how she doesn't realize she's the greatest being in their universe and literally worshiping the ground she walks on)

And then, even after she unlocks her power, their history is so mythologized that she doesn't realize that the goddess she's still mad at, who makes her feel like such a failure, is literally herself.

Take the broken mask drawing as symbolism (?). A piece of him is now forever a part of Mask, and there's no taking that back.

There are many protrayals of Fierce Deity out there, but I like to think he ain't necessarily mean (quite the contrary), just a bit out of touch with how hylians work and feel. Fierce Deity deemed some things necessary for Mask's survival and well being, and not necessarily all of them were free of consequences. It was done with good intentions tho. If only he bothered to explain/tell Mask that...

I pray to a god who does not listen

Drawing some more of my LOZ nonsense. It’s a personal headcanon that Link is aware of his eternal cycle, and knows it was caused by the goddess Hylia. He grows weary, but reigns eternal.

Personally, I like to start my mental timeline with ocarina, but the idea of skyward sword happening and over the ages this great love rotting into something completely other is also pretty interesting to me. This was mostly spawned by the observation that Zelda is more of a held title, a lineage- in BOTW it’s very frequently mentioned that Zelda’s mother was the previous Zelda to hold the title and powers. But with Link he’s usually just a kid. Living with his grandma, among the kokiri, taking up his fathers sword. Link is not a lineage, Link is a person. That’s really neat to me.
