Ive come to the realization that the reason theres a small but loud group of people who are showing nothing but hate for the rwrb movie is because they have completely unrealistic expectations. People are forgetting that this is a cheesy romantic comedy, thats supposed to look and feel like a cheesy romantic comedy. This isnt going to be moonlight or gods own country or some other critically acclaimed, oscar nomintaed queer film that makes straight people go "hmm maybe they do deserve rights and respect🤷‍♀️"

Its gonna be a cheesy adult romantic comedy, thats gonna be a bit camp and over the top and thats exactly why its so good. I dont want to think about every gay movie I watch. I want to watch it and see two queer people fall in love and thats it. Thats how deep it goes. Maybe a sprinkling of politcal commentary in between.

There is this issue thats become bigger and bigger every passing year, that people expect every bit of queer representation to be the best thing ever. There can not ever be anything cringey or different or silly, and if it is then they send endless hate towards it, and in an industry that already hates to show queer people on screen, its this viscious cycle of someone finally being greenlit to make queer media, the media gets endless hate for not being perfect, the studio cancels the queer media before giving it a chance because theyve just 'proven that it wont make money', suddenly everyone is saying 'why do they keep canceling queer media😢', cycle repeats.

Im so over it. Let gay people be slightly cringy or cheesy or campy. Let queer media exist without putting it on this huge pedestal. Just enjoy things! And if you dont, dont watch it! Move on, find something better to do.

I want light-hearted rom coms about queer adults just being queer adults and havig fun. I want comedy adventures where the characters just happen to be gay. I want more horror where at the end the final girl kisses a girl and can't belive they lived but not because they're gay. (suprisingly several of these exist and I love it)

I don't always want to think about the plight and horrors of being queer today with every queer movie I watch.

Sometimes, yes of course, I want to be seen on that level.

(Nimona, which came this weekend is a perfect example of a queer movie where I felt very very seen but also had a good time and was an incredibly silly fantasy adventure movie. But, still had the queer expereince intertwined.)

I'm looking forward to a movie that will be 90% rom com, and 10% realism/heavyness. re: being outed is a real thing that happens to people. famous people.

Alex and Henry go through some heavy shit. There's seriously traumatizing stuff at the end of the book. They're both dealing with mental illnesses, complex families, and rock-or-a-hard-place situations. I want all of that honored.

And, at the same time, I'm expecting a straight-to-streaming, mid-budget, movie that had to pass through a LOT of straight hands and board meetings to get to us.

Not to say we should love and accept every queer movie that comes out automatically, they have been done wrong in the past. (example: I skipped call me by your name bc the age gap still makes me too uncomfortable to watch)

But we have to give queer movies a chance to fit the genre they were made for, the tone they are made to be, and give queer creators a chance to show they are us annd they know us. The director is Bi. He's spent so much time going on about how much he related to Alex that he needed to make this movie. It's his first directing role, and I'm giving him a chance.

Finding Punk Communities Online:

I’ll be honest, I can really only speak on behalf of tumblr here. I don’t use other socials all that much.

But! If you want to find a fun awesome punk community on tumblr, you are already off to a great start! Find a punk blog you like or who has similar music taste, see who they reblog from and tag in their posts. I’ve met a LOT of really cool people this way on here! (Shoutout to @polyamorouspunk and @my-chemical-ratz whose blogs you should check out simply because they are cool people). And I’ve also met people who are in bands, or involved with bands (like @necromancy-savant and @dopamineband (who don’t use their tumblr anymore 😭)). I didn’t meet these people right away, it took a while of steady interaction with tumblr to build up these connections.

There are also Discord communities too, I don’t use discord much but I *think* (?) I saw a post go around a while ago where someone was starting up a punk discord server? Honestly maybe I’ll take the time to start one up, it might make me use Discord more lmao

Finding Punk Communities IRL:

Bars and clubs aren’t the only places to find punks!!

I’d recommend checking out any queer spaces in your area, I doubt it would surprise you to learn how often these two groups overlap.

Also! If you are near a city, chances are you have an underground scene somewhere. Google and Reddit are great resources to find the places punks gather in your city. For example: in my city theres a cafe and record shop that are popular among the alternative crowd that I never would have found without the use of Google.

Otherwise, what are your hobbies? If you like gardening/are into solar punk, see if theres a local gardening club! (I’d say a 50/50 chance of punk or karens tbh with this one).

Start up a book club at a local library that focuses on books like 1984 and Brave New World.

Go to gigs that arent at bars or clubs, I went to one back in February that was at an abandoned church, that was turned into a concert venue. The place was child friendly so there was no alcohol, but there were a lot of cool people there!

And the best tip I have for you to avoid nazis is to just know their symbols and signs. Do a bit of research on it and familiarize yourself with what to avoid

no but actually i thought about this and i think its absolutely words of affirmation (also im sorry for how much detail im about to go into but im taking a class rn where we talk about love styles/love languages a lot so i have a lot of thoughts about this)

for one thing she really cares about what other people think of her and ties her own personal value into what she can do for others, so i think the verbal reminder that other people care about her means a lot to her

also before i get into this i want to say for the record that love languages can also be platonic so the screenshots im about to use are Not all romantic ships (i know this is common knowledge but i just wanted to be very clear bc im about to use screenshots of like. lian and slade. and i dont want anyone thinking im saying it romantically)

anyways first things first in fresh hell (best rose book ever) she is hallucinating the team a lot and pretty much every time she hallucinates them theyre encouraging her or saying that they care about her. shes kinda using the words that she wishes other people would say to her to support herself while shes Alone and Struggling

not to mention when it actually does happen not in a hallucination it clearly means a lot to her every time

(ok in fairness the kyle one isnt really words of affirmation but i really like that moment so im posting it anyway)

also the less serious example is rose in nightwing #114 asking dick how she looks then glaring at him until he says she looks nice hfdkjasfhsdf the renegade arc is a comedy to me

plus she also tends to feel most hurt when people are saying harmful things about her

not to mention she tends to look for slade to say something positive about her and will get. um. very upset when he doesnt

anyways i think that her love language stems from rose's mom because lili very clearly has no problem with outright talking about how much she loves rose <3

now you might be thinking "lauren you dumb bitch. all youve done is make a compilation of people being nice to rose. relationships are a two way street and rose doesnt compliment people"

and to that i say... its complicated okay

i have two possible reasons for this. the first is that she is so fucking bad at expressing herself and she doesnt know how to be nice to people, and is terrified of showing others that she loves them

the other reason is that some people have different love languages for giving & receiving!!!! and i think that while rose's receiving love language is words of affirmation, her giving love language is acts of service

now usually these "acts of service" are either saving their life or beating the shit out of someone that hurts them but it COUNTS okay!!!

and of course. the funniest "act of service" which is marrying hosun

anyways i ran out of images but rose as deathstroke arc my beloved, i consider that another act of service because her father was dead and she knew what he would have wanted to be done (killing his last target) so she did it

also id like to think that her acts of service love language stems from wintergreen because of how he did so much to help her when they first met <3 <3 <3

So Steven Spielberg directed an episode of Columbo:Murder By the Book

So Columbo is one of the most beloved American TV shows ever .I'll admitat the moment I have only seen two episodes ,but my grandparents were huge fans . (I have a few childhood memories of my grandfather holding a portable DVD player ,watching his DVD set of the third season Columbo,which I still have ) and honestly ,I do wanna watch more.I think it is a fun idea for a murder mystery show....Cause its not a mystery ,I'll go into that later

Today we are looking at the first proper episode ,which has a bit of a pedigree being directed by Steven Spielberg,and on the strength of the episode he got the oppurtunity to direct Duel which led to Sugerland Express and Jaws .....Its also said by some to be the best episode of Columbo.

So this 1971 episode follows mystery writer Ken Franklin (Jack Cassidy) who murders his writing partner Jim Ferris (Martin Milner ) who was planning on going his own path ,and it seems like the perfect murder ,if only this annoying Lieutenant Columbo (Peter Falk ) would stop bugging him with meaningless visits

So Columbo is one of those shows with a straightforward formula:Someone kills someone,and encounter this scruffy odd cop who they underestimate.So the fun comes from the villain of the week and how Columbo is going to catch them.As an episode goes this is really damn good

Spielbergs flare is definately evident here ,as he makes it very cinematic ,it almost feels like a Hitchcock thriller with the way it is framed .I also like the music which incorporates the sound of a typewriter .I think there is a pretty fun twist involving how Ken planned the murder

The supporting cast are all solid ,Martin Milner plays a likeable murder victim ,Barbra Colby is solid as an unforunate witness ,and Rosemary Forsyth doesa fantastic job as the widow of the murdered writer

What can I say about Peter Falk that hasnt been said.I've made it no secret ,I adore him as an actor , and aside from maybe the Princess Bride,Columbo might be his most enduring legacy .I love eccentric investigators ,and I love Columbo cause he if your a first time watcher youd be in the villains shoes and see him just as this weird guy but if your in the know ,its fun to see how he is befuddling the villain,and ya dont know how much of it is an act and how much is just his quirky personality .Also theres a sweet scene in this episode where he makes an omlete for the widow

The best part of this episode ,besides Colombo himself ,is Jack Cassidy as Ken.He is such a love to hate villain.An egotistical gloryhound who loves the finer things in life ,and is so smug and loves bragging about how superior he is to Columbo,you just really wanna see our hero catch him .Jack Cassidy is just so good at protraying the smugness and sleazyness ,I am not surprised he was brought back to be a villain in two other episodes

OVerall if you wanna check out Columbo this is a great place to start and as an example of Spielbergs talent its a great showcase

Harmonic Triads and Average Base Mood

I hadn’t put these on tumblr & it occurred to me that I probably should

Theory or possible insight that came to me between some of the recent discussions here.

eg. the positive types would typically jump out of bed with a positive base mood -

unless they have some psyhiatric condition, are under substantial stress or had some major tragic backstory happen to them.

"9s whose parents didnt suck" seemed to be the happiest group overall in the recent"typical moods thread".

Though of course when negative stuff/ tough situations do happen, they do each have characteristic negative corners that they can slip into (For 9s often is this sort of 'why bother with anything?' depressed state, for 7s a pervasive restlessness or understimulation void, and for 2s more of a wet, active pain - "no one likes me or appreciates me, i want to cry and also smash things") Being wedged in between two reactives perhaps reflects how the 7s require ore input to maintain the sunshine & sparkles.

Whereas the competency types would tend to have a more neutral baseline, with the 3s generally reporting this most often. (kinda makes sense, with them being placed between one positive & one negative wing)

You'd think that, if your feelings are mostly reactions to things that happen, there is no reason to have a reaction when nothing recently happened, but apparently not.

This recent psychology book I read a while ago detailed that ppl most often do have some slight low-level mood going on with actual neutrality being somewhat unsual, which tracks with the competency types generally being outnumbered, since theres not as many 3s as 6s or 9s, for example. Even 7 isn't that infrequent, so the positives are probably the greatest majority.

Hence the common adage that "Doesn't everybody want to be happy?" Statistically speaking, most ppl do.

Which leaves the question of how to characterize the reactives.

4s and 6s certainly report higher rates of subjectively experienced negative states (if you give them a big 5/OCEAN questionaire, for example) but this isn't really the case for 8s, whose negative moments are more individual points if something just blew up in their face.

Though they tend to interpret things that others would read negatively as stress, anxiety, anger etc. as positive excitment & "aliveness".

One thing one immediately notes is that reactive types, well, react a lot, and quickly, often going to a lot of reactions in a short time. So maybe there isn't a fixed baseline or center or gravity to the same degree

8s and 4s are both somewhat intensity seeking; The 6s are the most stability-loving out of the bunch but you even hear some of them saying that they do best with a moderate level of challenge, like having something to work against. Some of the cp ones can even be outright thrill-seeking. A cynic might remark that the phobic 6s are so good at making stress for themselves that they dont need any extra stress from the outside. though one might say the same about 4s and drama and in that case we come close to glass houses territory, i can always find something to sulk about if so desired, though for me of course that then goes straight to the intellectualized level. Actually getting to the point of having a physical reaction & crying would not be so pleasant or common for me, which would likely be different for a core 4.

So perhaps ideal state for reactives is some mild "positive stress" though the preferred level and type thereof differs greatly between the individual types. A phobic 6 doesn't per se want to do the same risk-filled jobs & hobbies as an 8. But you do hear even from phobic 6s that there can be a tendency to "always look for something to fix" in a relationship so that they can reaffirm that they & their partner are still on the same team.

This might be where the idea comes from that "a good relationship should have some arguments". That was probably invented by a 6 - cue legions of teenage fanfic writers clumsily inserting a "first argument" scene into their ship fics regardless of whether it made sense for the characters or situation.

I personally wouldn't miss them if there is no need for them, for all that im all for confronting problems when they come up rather than brushing them under the rug

In my experience with a two competency types relationship, there were pretty much zero fights for the first 3 years that it was going good, and not cause grievances were being ignored, either, we'd just, like, discuss improvement suggestions.

Probably one of the main reasons that you often do see competency types pairing up in the first place. "Ah, finally someone whos not clingy & wont mind it if I work alot. What a pleasant absence of drama"

Though, on the rare occasion that an argument does need to happen, one possible pitfall can be to fall into the unspoken convention that the first person to flinch has automatically lost the argument. If you don't like it when ppl draw attention to such involuntary reactions as you didn't manage to keep under wraps, you might wanna extend the same courtesy to your partner...

Omgggg you are so right and I think its really annoying when adults who put childrens media down see good childrens media that they enjoy and appreciate and go "aha! This isnt childrens media then" The best example I can think of in regards to this is probably The Little Prince, both the book and the two movies Ive watched. I adore the book, both live action adaptation from 70s and the animated movie that came out in 2015 were lovely, I despise how theyre all touted as "the childrens [piece of media] for adults" like NO. fuck off, its a childrens book written with children in mind by someone who clearly understands children and the movies are the same in that regard, its just a bit unconventional, stop saying shit like that

Also, while reading your post I couldnt help but sortof connect it to another post partially about childrens media that really resonated with me (I would link it but its technically a response to dsmp discoure shit and idk if you'd wanna get involved in all that lol). Basically the OP was responding to people criticizing the storyline specifically on the basis of it having a terrible message by saying that its not a story for children, its for teens and adults, it doesnt need to have a message and its perfectly fine for "morally wrong" things to happen without some kind of condemnation because teens adults are expected to be able to handle that. And I 100% agree with that assessment because, while theres certainly a lot to be said about the dsmp, you cannot say that it was written with children in mind in any way shape or form. And I think the fact that people are complaining about it anyway speaks to this infuriating dichotomy that exists in some people, where they will needlessly put down childrens media because theyre not children and it doesnt really appeal to them while also wanting all media to ultimately be as simplistic and moralistic as childrens media. Granted, that might just be a chronically-online thing but its still insanely annoying, sry for venting like that bye

first of all, i just want to say that i am so very sorry that it took me a while to reply to this message. there was just so much good stuff in here that i wanted to actually take time to reply to your entire message beyond a few sentences.

anyway, you are completely correct. i have seen a lot of posts on tungl dot hell that criticize people for being grown adults who are “too into” a children’s media. sometimes with weird takes of how long it takes to do taxes or laundry. (side rant: laundry and taxes both take minimal time to do, why is it so common to use those as retorts?) other times it’s like “you should go take care of your kids” and like… caring about the media being given to your kids IS part of taking care of kids. blogging about the core values that are shown in a children’s tv show CAN be part of finding a community with other mothers on shows to watch as a family. genuinely it is very baffling to me to see people think that older women caring about the story in children’s media is so weird. my parents tended to watch our cartoons with us, and got invested in them with us.

even outside the context of parenting, a creator is allowed to watch children’s media specifically to make children’s media. being aware of what is often marketed to kids IS a valuable thing to do. creating for children IS a worthy endeavor. and it is wild to see people treat them as they are not.

but even further, you are correct in your assessment that a lot of people see a well put together media made with children in mind and go “then it mustn't be made for children” which… uh… yes it is. a piece of media being “good” does not prevent it from being for children. i actually saw this with gravity falls & the owl house, both of which aired on a children’s network and was very clearly marketed towards children. but because they are “good”, they suddenly were not for children. it was also the argument bronies made about my little pony - that because it was “good” it was not meant for little girls.

and it is true that people tend to think of “good” media for adults and “bad” media for children. which is deeply unfortunate, because children’s media CAN be good and well written. it can be very smart. as much as i say that bridge to terabithia scarred me, it was definitely written for children in mind. it was a story written to help a child cope with grief and sudden loss, and that’s okay! like, there’s this idea that children’s media MUST be simplistic and MUST be moralistic but… that’s not true either. the goosebumps series and anamorphs series proves kids like gross out horror as much as adults do.

adults tend to think of children as inherently pure and naive and try to preserve that purity like a cut flower pressed between pages. but a child cannot be pressed between pages of a scrapbook, preserved at that age forever. a child will grow up, and books and tv shows that do not treat them like simpletons are valuable. that does not make a smartly written children’s story an adult story. it makes it a very good children’s story.

but im also not getting any immediate dopamine from this so im having trouble working on it.

Im also scared of having a new audience because like aside from a set few people most of my mutuals know me from ihiap and yall are nice and new people scare me

I even gatekeep ihiap, like if you dont know me from ihiap your not allowed to know about ihiap

a lot more people read that fic than i thought and it stresses me out

i do genuinely think cots is going to be better than ihiap because ive had like two years now to figure out how to interact with fandom and im friends with other writers not and have more of a grasp of my writing style than i did before.

so im really excited about this

but i have enough trouble updating ihiap idk about doing two fics at once

but if i wait until im done with ihiap thatll take like two more fucking years

and ill lose focus

Ihiap

I have a love/hate relationship with ihiap. The characters in it are amazing theyre my favorite people ever. Some might make a cameo in cots, i havent decided yet.

REasons i hate ihiap:

-I accidentally stole half my ocs i talk about this a lot and ive been reassured but im not going to get over it. I hate myself

-Its so badly written like half the time There are some parts that i absolutely love and some that make me want to delete the entire fic. Like ive actually considered it multiple times. I hate it so much, so much second hand embarrassment. Is it second hand embarrassment if I'm the one who wrote it???? -Zuko is so ooc he might as well be an oc

-I dont even know twf azula is doing Azula and Mailee is one of the plot holes that drives me nuts. Because like I wrote Ty Lee into a scene but miss girl is supposed to be in the circus by now. I forgot about that part. Also Theres a certain detail about Azula and MaiLee thats going to be very prevelant near the end of book 3 but i forgot to imply or write that in so thats going to come out of no where. -most major events were impulsive and had no value to the actual plot Examples: That stupid soldier dude, the islands thing. I hate these parts and im going to write them out eventually -PLOT HOLES Reasons why Ihiap is the best piece of literature ever written:

-Relationships and characters

So the thing is despite the fact that theres so many things im bad at doing in writing/havent had enough practice yet, there are things that I know that I am great at writing.

One of these things is delevoping relationships.

I'm really good at making people and relationships very complex and this isnt something that someone can change my mind over, like this is something that i love the way i do it.

This is one of the only redeeming qualities of ihiap.

-I love the plot.

I really want to redo this to do the plot justice because i do think it has potential.

Overall i think that ihiap has more good than bad but the mad really does bother me. If your ever rereading and there seems to be some stuff missing or changed its because im eventually going to go through and edit the shit out of it.

As of now the next chapter (chapter 14) has like 600 words. Chapter 15 has i think 445 and chapter 16 is completely done, chapter 17 had like half a sentence, then were done with twbb.

Chapter 16 is where stuff gets interesting.

Im perfectly aware that TWBB is boring but it was meant to be. I needed it to be for Zuko to not go insane and then also develop Tomnooks relationship (because believe it or not theyre not COMPLETELY self indulgement and they are important) and also Sokka and Katara and Zuko needed that sibling relationship. So i needed like a 17 chapter book in between the two main books for that stuff.

I'm so excited for the next book. Especially like the second half. Its also (most likely) going to be updated a lot more frequently than twbb. Twbb was a pain in the ass because there was very little actual plot and it was just day to day stuff. So i had nothing to go off us.

Like Book 1 was all about the crew and Zuko to kind of learn and build relationships and shit and Book 3 is going to be a lot easier because it has a lot of actual plot and a goal and shit.

I haven't read the series nor learnt anything about the rest of it as I’m waiting till their either translated to English or the show comes out so I can have my heart ripped to shreds completely virgin to what the series holds but I’m just so interested in the cards. I mean there's 52 normal playing cards but there's also 2 jokers building it up to 54 cards. Now I know logically the show isn't going to use the joker cards but they are rather interesting I mean when they were first written into the rule book (although they had existed long before that) their status was actually above all the cards. obviously now its used in other contexts depending on the game you play (example it may be used to skip a players turn, it may also be the lowest ranking card or some other ability.). Its main purpose throughout is to be a wild card. obviously all the important characters relate to a Alice in wonderland character- which ones are somewhat up to interpretation since how one reads Alice in wonderland and also how one interprets the characters motives of Alice in borderland varies vastly. But I mean come on the cards are such an integral part of the series- as well as Alice in borderland- so it only makes sense for the characters to relate to the cards as well. I could probably rant about the characters and their cards, how perhaps their card are the ones we first meet them in, or the ones they die in, maybe the ones they held the most impact on. But then there's certain characters that we meet that do hold enough purpose in the show to be memorable yet either don't fit any of those descriptions or meet multiple. Perhaps its only the face cards- the jack, queen, king and ace- that hold characters dear to them. I mean Mira is the red queen herself no? in both characterisation and card references and yet that seems to easy. For it to only be the face cards when we meet so many influential characters. I mean heck playing cards I’d find myself winning ( or rather losing since I always guessed wrong and would win to many games) on something as stupid as the 2 of trumps. So its not like the normal cards are something to scoff at- used correctly and their more useful then the ace for crying out loud. But I'm getting off track, the most obvious character for the Joker would be hatter, I mean dudes insane and basically made for the role. But I mean, come on, the even more obvious choice is Arisu. Dudes build to be a wild card. From a nothing in the real world, a shut in who plays games all day. Yet he seems to be one of the best game players in the series for things like hearts and Diamonds. his innocents, ability to make characters love him or feel sympathy, quick wit and much more make him stupidly good at the two heart games we’ve seen in the show so far. He’s a wild card within the universe. A trump card. but I mean theres two jokers in most decks. A red and a black one. balance and all that. If we go with Hatter being the joker then obviously its Aguni. but then I didnt go for hatter so fuck that. I think Chishiya would be the other joker. Their both working for the same thing, both playing off each other in diffrent ways and both great at the same games ( although both will deny being good at heart games). In the end I could only ever see those two ‘beating’ borderland. how they’d do it would be diffrent but they’d do it together or not.

their the trump cards in the deck that is borderland. or maybe I’m really fucking sleepdeprived and lowkey havent had a coherent thought in like 2 weeks and am trying not to post about Hatter being a furry. its probally that one. eitehr way I want a joker game and I want it to be heart breaking.

very few characters actually have adhd in media, and when they do, what people mean by that is just that they fidget a lot, not that they have adhd. the only character with adhd I can think of where I’ve watched/read it and I’ve gone, “oh, this character actually has adhd” is Jake peralta from Brooklyn 99. so, here’s my take on how to write adhd, with examples from Brooklyn 99.

I’ll do the best I can to separate them into three categories; the three things people look for in adults with ADHD, which are rejection sensitivity dysphoria, an interest-based nervous system, and emotional hyperarousal.

I’ll also randomly bold and italicize bits so people with ADHD can actually read it.

Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria, or RSD

Rejection sensitivity dysphoria makes people with ADHD overly sensitive to criticism, even if they perceive a rejection and there actually isn’t one. Their emotions are also very strong generally. Because of RSD, people with ADHD become people-pleasers and can develop anxiety because they’re so eager to please.

For me, RSD makes me cry an embarrassing amount for any little reason. in your writing, make your characters overdramatic, criers, and/or people-pleasers. They’ll have trouble saying no. They may also be over competitive, as their perceived rejection may include losing.

how does Jake show this in b99? When Jake comes up with a catchphrase and Rosa says it’s terrible, jake is far more hurt than he should be. He hates losing, and he gets overly upset whenever someone says they don’t like him or don’t trust him, etc. he’s also a people pleaser who has trouble saying no.

An interest-based nervous system

An interest-based nervous system includes hyperfocuses and an inability to pay attention. It stems from the fact that we can’t make as much dopamine as neurotypicals. This means that while neurotypicals get dopamine after completing a task, people with ADHD don’t. That means that people with ADHD don’t have any reason to do tasks, especially those they don’t like. This leads to executive dysfunction—people with ADHD will know they have to or want to do something, but they can’t seem to do it. people with ADHD hyperfocus on things that bring them dopamine. I was obsessed with warrior cats for three years. But hyperfocuses can also last a short amount of time—I’ll have a drawing idea in the middle of class and won’t be able to concentrate on anything else before I finish it. this is where our impulsiveness comes from. we can leap into things we think will give us dopamine without thinking, which can lead to injury. We also tend to tell people personal things they don’t want to hear because of this, and don’t have very good boundaries. We sometimes say whatever comes into our head, which can also result in us being rude on accident. Our voices can also get very loud or we can interrupt people frequently because we’re so impulsive. When people with ADHD hyperfocus, they can forget about anything else. I’ll forget to eat if I’m busy reading a Wikipedia article about feminism in the 1850s, and won’t go to the bathroom or drink water either. It’s also important to note that taking away distractions doesn’t help, because we can do things like pick at our skin and daydream—something that people with ADHD do a lot of. Because of executive dysfunction, people can call people with ADHD lazy or irresponsible.

people with ADHD can also be extremely indecisive because ADHD affects our executive functioning, and making decisions requires planning and prioritizing, and task initiation, which are both executive functions!

people with ADHD also have poor memory for important things, but tend to remember random bits of trivia. Poor memory leads to object permanence problems, which means people with ADHD can forget to call a friend back for weeks, forget that they need to read library books in a closed cabinet, or forget that the vegetables they got will go bad. People can sometimes say that people with ADHD don’t care about anything because of this.

people with ADHD can also be prone to depression because of under or overstimulation. Boredom feels painful for people with ADHD. If we’re overstimulated, we can experience sensory overload—if things are too bright or too loud, if too many things are touching us at once—often it’s not because the thing is too intense, but because too many things are happening at once.

We also have something some people call dolphin brain, where we jump from one thing to another. From the outside, it looks really random, but I find that when I’m talking to another neurodivergent communication is generally easier. For instance, someone with ADHD might see a bee at a baseball field and tell their team about the time they saw whales at seaworld because their little brother was also stung by a wasp there. people will see no connection on the outside, but it makes perfect sense to the person with ADHD.

people with ADHD can also be overachievers, either because they hyperfocus on schoolwork or their RSD makes it so that failing at something isn’t an option. people with ADHD can also be very controlling and stubborn, probably because we hyperfocus on something and cant handle it being any different, and any change to our plans can be seen as rejection.

we can also have a hard time ordering our thoughts or doing stuff like math in our head. a lot of the time I number my thoughts like, 1. this reason, 2. this reason, etc. even if theres only two or sometimes I just need the 1. as a transition for my brain. when I don’t write it down or organize it like that it feels like I’m trying to grasp ropes that have been covered in oil (it’s not going to happen) and then my brain gets all jumbled and I have to restart at the beginning. this is probably just me, but it feels the same way when I’m reading long paragraphs of something uninteresting, or even short bits of historical documents because the way they phrase things is really pompous and hard to process.

also, stuff like caffeine calms us down and helps us focus. people who don’t take medication (me) often drink coffee or caffeinated sodas to focus.

another random tip, but if your character with ADHD also is genderfluid or genderflux, they might have a hard time figuring out their gender sometimes, because we can be known to have a hard time putting our feelings into words or our brains will just go, “nope, not thinking about that right now” and move on, which can be pretty frustrating.

people with adhd also have a trait called time blindness, where we have no idea how long something takes and therefore can’t manage our time very well. this often results in us being late or just sitting around the house because we got ready way too early.

we also have something called consequence blindness—we do things and are completely unaware of the consequences. if I don’t brush my teeth, I get cavities. but I don’t think about that when I’m deciding I’m too tired to brush my teeth.

in b99, jake regularly stays up all night solving cases and watches documentaries on random topics. He’s also very distractible—when they’re trying to find the person who sent Captain Holt death threats in the train yard, Jake says he and captain holt should take a train trip together sometime. Jake says that he’ll forget Amy if they don't work together because he’s like a goldfish.

Emotional hyperarousal

This is the only thing people tend to include when writing characters: the fidgeting. People with ADHD tend to need more stimulation than others, so we’ll do things like draw during class and chew on pens.

people with ADHD can also have apd, or auditory processing disorder. we tend to watch shows with subtitles on and may take a second to process what you’re saying, or hear it wrong. The subtitles thing may be partially do to creating just the right amount of stimulation, but if I don’t have subtitles, me and my other friends with ADHD will watch tv with the volume turned up very high. People with ADHD also can have a hard time interpreting other people‘s tone and have a hard time controlling their own. They can be bad at social cues and have poor manners because we don’t pick up on that stuff.

people with ADHD also tend to observe everything or nothing at any given time, mostly based on the amount of stimulation they have—if they dont have a lot in their main task, they’ll need to take in something else at the same time. Likewise, if I’m hyperfocusing on something I often don’t notice anything else, like if someone asks me a question.

in b99, Jake fidgets with things a lot. In the intro, he’s picking up and examining a figurine on his desk, likely because he was bored with paperwork or some other task.

- There C/N was, laying in they’re parents arms, as Y/N hugged them close, cradling they’re new born baby. Y/N stared in adoration, they we’re finally going to be a parent, the journey had been rough, and still will be, but for now, it was worth it.

- Wilbur had quietly sneaked in, cracking open the door and sneakily slipping into the room. He quietly walked over to the bed, staring at the two most beloved people in his life. Y/N softly cradled C/N in they’re arms, softly nuzzling them as C/N softly snored.

“Oh god...- oh now i have two beautiful people to adore..” Wilbur giggled, grabbing his partners attention. “Why hello, Mr. Soot, would you like to meet Soot Jr?” Y/N giggled softly as to not disturb the precious infant in they’re arms.

Wilbur giggled, and slowly made his way to his lover and child.

He’s never loved two people so much in his life.

- The few days you and your baby had to stay there he felt like he couldn’t function, usually he would go on ‘auto-pilot mode’ or be totally normal, but he practically sulked around until you and C/N were discharged

- Speaking of leaving the hospital, when all of you could leave that day he was SO EXCITED. Cradling his baby in his arms bouncing them up and down ever so gently. He was so happy to finally be able to be with his kid, with no boundaries. He was truly the happiest man in the world

- He’d walk around with C/N in his arms, showing them the house whilst he had a big goofy grin on his face. Especially when showing the kid they’re nursery

(just an example but still)

- You know he’s missed streams becyhe was spending time with C/N. Which in return causes him to stream at like 2-3 AM, but then C/N starts crying, so theres just these like 10-15 minute periods in his stream of just him not being there.

- Him having shopping trips with C/N and going buying them clothes, toys, plushies, ect.

- Again, he’d totally buy sweaters and beanies for them. They’re is no escaping this thought.

- Techno travelling to the UK so he can meet C/N with Tommy and Philza. And them all of then internalky crying because ‘holy shit this baby cute but WILBUR IS SO HAPPY— BUT FAMILY TIME AND LATE NIGHT TALKS-‘

- Niki? She’d be a great babysitter change my mind. She’s like the only one you two trust besides SBI & Tubbo. Like thats the group. Thats it.

- Philza would be a great grandfather this is CANNON. That man was made to be a fatherly figure, okay? Him and Kristin would be so happy to spend time with C/N

- Like yeah they wouldn’t act like 80 year olds and want porridge or like prunes but you know they’d take your kid out to the park, play with them, like i swear they’d probably have a routine schedule

- Tommy and Tubbo would just. Vibe with them if im being honest. They probably dont know how to take care of babies but that doesn’t mean they’d look after C/N and try they’re best.

- Although you and me both know they’d get into some trouble while C/N was there, i can totally see them sprinting down a sidewalk with C/N in Tommy’s arms as Tubbo is looking behind them.

- Wilbur having to be pryed off of the duo after he found out that incident happened.

- Wilbur is a protective dad, not suffocating and wouldn’t let his kid do anything, but more of just wanting them to be safe. He would die if his baby got hurt

- He’d miss a lot of streams... which caused his chat to ask what was happening. This in turn led him to walking out the room and returning with a bundled up baby in his arms.

“This is C/N, chat. This is my baby! They’re the reason I’ve been missing so much... but i can’t complain, they mean everything to me.” He whispered, pecking his baby on the forehead as he read his chat. It seemed everyone was supportive, and he knew Twitter would blow up.

- He’d make so many songs about his kid. It’s ridiculous. You could hear him humming a new tune and peek into the next room, only to see him rocking C/N back and forth.

- He’d sit C/N in his lap and play Minecraft on stream every once and awhile, C/N would try to grab the mouse and chat sweared he started crying

- Monthly streams with C/N pog??

- When C/N spoke they’re first words Wilbur got SO EXCITED. Especially if it was “dad” or “dada”. He would SOB GUYS.

- Wilbur hates being soft in front of other people that isnt you or SBI but C/N could do anything in front of anyone and ges smiling, giggling, clapping his hands.

- When C/N took they’re first steps it was because Wilbur was strumming his guitar, making a new song. He felt a tug on his pants and looked down to see C/N standing, angry and wanting attention. Oh boy they got attention all right. He ran to his phone and called Philza

lmao okay i got several asks about outlines but i’m just going to answer this one because it’s ~comprehensive~

every writing teacher i’ve ever had has hated my outlines. my friends find them incomprehensible.

if people are going to look at my answers as ways to do their own outlines, i have to say: that’s probably not a good idea

i don’t write outlines a majority of the time

i don’t write outlines to plan a story i’ve already decided to write

i write outlines primarily as a way to exorcise story ideas that i want to write but don’t want to actually commit to writing (answer prompts are another way i do this lol)

now, some things do get outlines as a way to plan and organize. survival is a talent has an outline because it’s 400k and spans six years. child king had an outline. needy’s body had an outline.

b u t

i’m currently writing rotten work without an outline

lynchpin didn’t have an outline

hope is the thing with feathers didn’t have an outline

never grow a wishbone only had an outline for the first couple of chapters

an invincible summer didn’t get an outline until like. chapter 4 of 6.

i just. uh. think about what i want to happen and then hope i remember to write it down. even when i do an outline, i’ll deviate from it wildly, and not update it to reflect that, because i know what i’m doing (ha!)

so! with that in mind, let’s go!

How detailed are they? Are they the same level of detail or do they vary?

they vary! but honestly - not very. sometimes i’ll write out a paragraph or bits of dialogue that are important to me, but most of the time it’s just broad strokes of what i want to happen, or a mechanism of how something complicated happens. like i have several paragraphs in my siat outline dealing with necromancy books, but like. two sentences on how they actually occur in the story because that’s just something i’m trusting myself to figure out when i sit down to write it.

How do you make your outlines? Chronologically scene by scene? Or do you come up with the scenes that call you and then come up with smaller filler scenes to fill in the gaps?

I try to put them chronologically, although sometimes that’s a little hard (in siat i have several scenes that i know will happen, i just don’t know when). that is something i will go back and edit on my outlines, is if i’ve changed the order the something happens i’ll go back and copy and paste until my outlines is in the right order. but only if the outlines is something i’m actually using to write and the story is longer than a couple of chapters.

because my outlines are so very not detailed, i just write down what it is that i want to write, like the reason i’m going to write this or want to write this, and figure out the rest later. i’ll fill it in later - or i won’t! because most of the time i don’t use my outline to actually write the story, and i use it more as an idea list, so if i don’t know what happens between scenes or i find it boring i just won’t write it down

like, for example, here is my “outline” for won’t even plant a garden in it’s entirety

crowley and eve were friends. cain killed abel with the flaming sword, and crowley begged them to say it was with a rock instead

i ended up dropping most of this and crowley ended up sleeping with both eve and yeshua as the major plot points. i don’t explain stuff, really. i know what i mean so i just don’t bother to get very detailed most of the time.

Do you have outlines for each chapter? Or just for the larger general plot points?

siat i divide up by year, and i think i did it by chapter for the last two chapters of build your wings on the way down, but otherwise it’s just one long list. i do my chapters based on words counts rather than content, so outlining by chapter doesn’t really make sense for me (siat is always around 15k a chapter, and everything else i do these days thats multi chapter is around 8k because that’s the best, but ngawb was 5k a chapter and i think for child king it was around 11k a chapter)

Do you try to complete the outlying before starting the fic? Or do you add to the outline as you go?

I’m constantly adding as a i go! my outlines are never really “complete” they’re just abandoned. i write down what i think will help me and tend to ignore the rest. sometimes i just. talking to myself in my outlines when i’m trying to think something through.

my outline for child king is under the cut because that’s one that’s a good mix of stuff i kept and stuff i threw out. DON’T JUDGE ME!! bad ideas don’t get written because they’re bad!! it’s part of the ~process~

Summary: “A child king is still a king,” Deaton says softly. “A child king is still a child,” he snaps, but he knows this is an argument he’s already lost. – Stiles is a born alpha, and after the Hale fire, things get real complicated, real fast.

Stiles’s mom is the last remaining human from a pack that was destroyed by hunters. John is the one that helps her after, so he knows everything. When they move to beacon hills she doesn’t feel the need to say anything to the hale pack, because as far as they’re concerned she’s just a human, and she doesn’t want to get involved in pack business. But then stiles is born with red eyes. The doctor is quiet and scared john and Claudia freak out, but it’s because he’s a werewolf, which is a relief to parents because they thought something was wrong with their kid. Maybe they don’t know he’s an alpha, only that he’s a wolf? Or they know and they keep it a secret on purpose

Claudia is the one to approach mrs. Hale. She tells her that her son is a born werewolf, but that she’s not interested in joining their pack. Her husband is a new deputy and they just bought a house but they’ll move if they have to. “he’ll need a pack one day. It’s safer,” she says. “if he wants to join you one day, I won’t stop him. But that’s not a choice I’m willing to make for him.” Mrs hale agrees that they can say separate as in exchange for the sheriff smoothing over some ruffled feathers no and again. They agree. Claudia to sheriff “we’re going to have to move one day. Our son is an alpha, and he’ll need to make his own pack.”

Stiles is seven the first time he snarls at his mom, eyes flashing red, and she freezes. She’s got the pack instinct, it doesn’t matter that hes her kid, hes still her alpha, so its hella awkward. John can see how this will quickly spiral out of control if they can discipline their own kid. But stiles is the one to back down first, apologizing and doing as he’s told. There are careful power structures here, and this is the beginning of differentiating between stiles the human and stiles the wolf.

When his mom gets sick, stiles offers to turn her. Hale offers to turn her. She refused for Reasons that I have to figure out. Maybe the politics of it? Wanting to protect stiles and not wanting to become part of the hale pack

The fire happens. John ships stiles the hell out of dodge, because there are hunters about. He snoops around enough to figure out it was kate argent, but theres not really anything he can do about it

Scott knows about everything, and tries to tell his mom in a really akward way that they should trust stiles if they’re ever in danger, but she just laughs it off. Except when someone breaks in and threatens her with a gun, and she manages to make a phone call, it’s not 911, not john, but stiles, and she doesn’t even know why, regrets it as soon as it happens. But then stiles shows up and breaks both of the guys, eyes glowing red, and then calls his dad and scott to take care of it, because they’re humans, so they get human punishments. Melissa is told everything.

Scott has a bad asthma attack and, and Melissa asks about the bite. Scott is itching for it. He wants it so badly. Stiles has already promised to turn them when they turn 18, and Melissa knows that. She asks if theres a reason to wait, and the answer is nah, not really. So he gets the bite. Stiles being like uh psa punishments cant include scott staying away

After hale fire and stiles gets back, he’s shocked that hey just left, and that they left peter behind. He starts visiting peter several times a week. He tells his dad that they should pay for his medical care. They have a fuckton of money because his mom inherited all the pack wealth, and john doesn’t touch it because that’s stiles’s money, that’s werewolf money. But this is a werewolf thing, so he agrees. “his pack left him dad.”

Stiles bites Erica when they’re 14. Some point in middle school stiles wises up to the Isaac thing and tells his dad he needs to arrest his dad, or stiles is going to kill him, and he’s not even a little bit joking. Stiles hears Isaac crying while going by the house? In johns squad car. Makes them pull over, then bursts into the house. John goes with it because his son’s eyes are red.

Some point after the hales leave, things start trying to move into hale territory. Some wolves? Stiles smells them, and ends up at 10 years old telling them to fuck off. This how scott finds out? He’s with scott and his dad. Deaton is facing off against something? Panics when stiles intervenes, but stiles goes wolfy and red eyes and is like. This is mine now fuck off. Looks at the hale house, and finally says, we have to take care of this. We have to. But they don’t own the house or the land or any of it. They do … something

Stiles ends up having to deal with a lot of crap real young

Stiles has scott and Isaac when peter wakes up. Stiles is there, and peter isn’t crazy because he wasn’t abandoned to die alone. Stiles says he can stay, or he can go, not trying to pressure anything. Peter chooses to become part of stiles’s pack, because his family is either dead or abandoned him. Peter ends up moving in with them as he finishes healing and to get used to being in a pack and with stiles. It’s very strange for john, but it’s a werewolf thing and he’s trying to be supportive. After a couple months, stiles tells his dad that having peter is a relief, that there’s finally someone who knows things, someone older who can support him as a werewolf. Peter acts as his second, and he finally has some degree of authority that age has lost him. Stiles has peter take care of the hale house. Peter and stiles have the conversation, where peter is like the hale land is your land now. You’re the alpha of beacon hills. He does what stiles directs him to.

Isaac is living with scott under stiles’s direction ish. But lots of Melissa. Isaac like I don’t wantto be afraid anymore, I don’t want to hurt anymore, and stiles is like. Okay. We’ll fix this. But he doesn’t bite Isaac until he goes to a shitton of therapy and has mostly sorted himself out. For isaac’s fifteenth birthday, he bites him.

Erica is spur of the moment, it’s something that all instinct and very little thought. OR they’re dating and it happesn? Erica’s parents suck. Stiles doesn’t want the balancing act of being boyfriend and alpha.

Jackson is so fucking desperate to belong to something. He nags and nags and nags and finally stiles bites him at least half to shut him up.

“dad can I talk to you about something weird and uncomfortable and a little creepy” talks about crush on Lydia, and how he’s not sure if its because he has a crush on her or if it’s bc he thinks she’ll be good for the pack. Lydia joins before Jackson, and she’s the one that pushes stiles into it. Lydia and stiles are not dating, but she’s clearly high in the hiarchey.

Boyd? Just like. Shows up. Idk.

So by the time laura and derek show up, stiles’s pack is: john, Melissa, peter, Lydia, Jackson, danny, Isaac, boyd, Erica, deaton (who’s acting as emissary but is training danny). Maybe bring in some later characters, like malia and kira and cora. Ooooh maybe the twins show up before they became alphas, still run aways and looking for something else? Stiles takes them on. Stiles finds malia early on after the fire

Peter is willing to forgive derek but he has a lot of shit with laura. Stiles agrees to let laura and derek stay and not be part of his pack, although laura insists she doesn’t need his permission. She snaps at peter to come home with them, and he looks at her like she’s insane. He says there’s no hale pack, and if there was, he’s not interested. He’s a stillinkski wolf now. Cora too maybe? Double blow. Peter owns the hale land, and he makes it clear the day stiles turns 18 he’ll be signing it over to him. Stiles is known by the surrounding packs.

Stiles has to somehow defend the surrounding area, has to make it clear he’s his and that he’s not willing to give it up. It’s valuable land. People are going to come looking for it once people figure out it’s abandoned. When deaton finds out stiles is an alpha, he goes around as an emissary to the surrounding packs. Saying that its under stiles now. He’s known to them so it goes mostly uncontested. This is when he and the sheriff have the child king conversation.

Stiles tries really, really hard to be a good alpha. That means controlling the territory, and working with other packs when members go rouge or something goes wrong. He’s thirteen the first time he goes to lend a hand in a fight, and it’s young, it’s too young, but he’s an alpha. He has to do this, to maintain the peace. And the thing is – stiles is good at this, good at not pushing, at not using his status as a crutch or an excuse, instead as a tool.

Maybe this is why no one cares for laura’s excuses. As much as laura wasn’t ready to take on the responsibility, she was an adult, if only barely. Stiles is a literal child, and in her absence shouldered it all. So even if she does technically have a claim, none of them are willing to honor it. “if you kill alpha stiles, you won’t have allies, you’ll have enemies.”

Allison and argents. Stiles brings his pack to kill kate. Gives peter the chance to do it himself, and is so very proud when he says no. but instead of letting her go free, stiles crushes her throat. “revenge would have been trapping you all in here and setting the whole thing on fire. Justice would have been making you watch as she burned alive. This was mercy, and don’t you forget it.” Scott is hella in love with Allison, but he knows this comes first. Her mom is full of hatred, but stiles more than makes it clear that he has no problem with killing her too.

Stiles sees derek soon after. They’ve already gone back and forth a lot. But he and laura weren’t there. Stiles tells him what he did. They have a ~moment~

Derek wants so very much to join stiles’s pack, but he doesn’t want to lose laura.

Something finally convinces laura to take the plunge and the stillinksi pack is one happy family

After weeks of awkwardness, Wei and Wing’s meddling and your father’s unprovoked attack of Huan, the two of you finally start dating....

Your first date with Huan was a resounding success and from them on you were both constantly travelling between Zafou and Republic City for more. When you came to Zafou Su was fine with you staying in their home but your father was not as progressive and so Huan was forced to find other arrangements when visiting Republic City. Huan startled his aunt Lin by basically showing up on her doorstep one day, calling payment for 18 years of ignoring his existence. Huan was never one to seek people out or force them to let him live there but when it came to you he was very determined and so even Lin Beifong couldn’t deter him.

The Beifongs were all amused by your effect on Huan and Su soon learnt that if she wanted Huan to do something she just had to incorporate you into the situation.

"Huan theres an event i need you to attend...". "No". "You can bring y/n". "Fine".

"Huan your father needs your help". "No". "If you help him you can go to the fire nation and visit y/n this summer". "Okay".

"Huan i need you to...". "No". "If you do i’ll let you invite y/n over the week Wing and Wei are away". "Deal".

You became her favourite barganing chip and as much as Huan knew what his mother was doing he didn’t care. The benefits of seeing you outweighed any chore or social event she required of him. But it wasn’t that Huan had become weak or whipped, nor had his personality changed. Instead it was small behavioural changes. Like how Huan walked or sat in a room. We was still introvereted and quiet but they all noticed how much his confidence has grown. He was confident in his differences now and didn’t take offence to their confusion with his “oddities”. You’d encouraged him to try things he didn’t think of and the permanent stream of positivity and support seemed to make Huan thrive.

A great example of this was the event Huan was hosting in Republic City. You had managed to convince Huan to show some of his works in Republic City for a charity event. You told him it was for a great cause (refugees from harmonic convergence) and would boost his artistic repuation. So Huan agreed to host the event and auction off some of his best pieces of work (but of course not the painting he made for you). You were so excited for the reception you knew Huan’s art would get and helped in any way you could. Tenzin, Korra, Suyin and (reluctantly) your father all put togther their contacts meaning the event was fully booked and you just knew everyone would love Huan’s work. But you also knew Huan wasn’t as thrilled as you...he was a nervous wreck to put it accurately. Half the appeal of becoming an artist was he couldn’t be judged by objective measures and an exhibition put him right in the centre of critique from all of the four nations and that thought did not thrill Huan.

Needless to say the closer the event got the more stressed Huan became and the journey over to Republic City from Zafou was not pretty. According to Wing he didn’t stop shouting and snapping at everyone until he saw got off the airship and saw you. Then he mellowed and they were all very annoyed you hadn’t been invited for the journey. Unsuprisingly you were enthusiastically invited to the hotel suite to spend the day with the Biefongs before the event later that evening. You knew you were mainly just there as a destressor for Huan but you didn’t mind, you’d gotten him into this so you had to help get him through it.

You lounged around with Huan for the remainder of the day, just trying to take his mind off the event later but it was honestly an amazing day. You loved just spending time together and didn’t get many opportunities living so far away from each other so you royally made the most of it. However, your lazy day did have to end as the event crept closer and you had to leave to go prepare for it. You told Huan and he sighed "but it's still hours away, you don’t have to go just yet...". You smirked "i know what you're trying, we're not procrastinating, i'm going to go get ready and you’re going to start getting ready when i leave and then i will see you there". Huan rolled his eyes but nodded "okay". "I'll try and get their early but the whole families coming so I will definitely be late but i just wanted to tell you how proud of you i am". Huan blushed, he still hadn’t gotten used to you being so open about your feelings and praise. He tried to look away but you pulled him hands to make him look at you. Huan still tried to turn away and a tug war ensued and ended up with you yanked beside him on the sofa laughing. "Huan i will pin you down if i have to”" you cried but Huan only smiled "fine by me". You rolled your eyes but still smiled brightly at him "You will do brilliantly okay? Everyone who's coming is going to see how amazing you are and you're going to get recognition for all your hard work". Huan sighed but you could see the hope in his eyes "fine okay". You smiled and looked at him "i know part of you is slightly excited". Huan shook his head "not really". You kissed him suprising him and Huan started to kiss you back when you pulled away "admit you’re excited or i'll never kiss you again". "Y/n" Huan groaned but you smirked "say it!". "Fine i'm excited" he sighed and you grinned. You went to get up but Huan grabbed you lightly "hey wait i did it! You have to kiss me! That's the rules". "I didn't say right away" you smirked and Huan raised an eyebrow. You wriggled out of his arms but Huan followed you. He knew you could easily overpower him or use bending if you wanted to get away from him but you clearly didn't want that. You outmaneuvered Huan for a short while before conveniently falling back into his grasp, laughing as Huan managed to grab you. He finally had you *trapped* on the sofa and smirked down at you "going to kiss me now?". "Fine" you sighed rolling your eyes in an imitation of him before bobbing your head up to kiss him happily. Huan had never really cared about relationships or affection until he met you. He always found it disgusting seeing couples kiss but when it was you and him it was just amazing. You broke away from the kiss after a while and Huan sighed. "I really have to go" you told him and Huan sighed "five more minutes". "No" you giggled pushing him off you "i'll see you at the party" and with a last smile you were gone.

5 hours later

Hours and numerous bribes (to make Ikki and Jinora stopping arguing just so you could get them both out of the door) later your whole family plus the avatar arrived at the hall where Huan's event was. You made sure your outfit was still presentable and entered the hall. You'd chosen a green dress the exact shade of the streak in Huan's hair. It had taken you and Asami hours to find it but when you did you were so pleased and Huan’s reaction made it all worth it. When you finally entered Huan was talking with some nobel man but stopped mid sentence catching sight of you. Korra smirked noticing and you blushed shooting Huan a smile. As soon as he could Huan made his way over to you "you look beautiful" he smiled and you nodded "so do you". Huan was in an all black suit and looked so smart. "Very handsome" you smiled and Huan blushed. "The green was a suprise?" he commented and you smirked "i’m glad you like it, it took me ages to find this exact shade too but you're worth it". Huan smiled, he wanted to kiss you but knew everyone was watching him which mean he probably shouldn’t. "So how's it going?" you asked taking his arm. He smiled "actually pretty good, some men your father knows from the fire nation might be interested in purchasing some sculptures for the capital". You nodded "they would look good in the fire nation, they're very fire-esc". Huan grinned and you heard a cough. You turned around and felt Huan tense at who was infront of you. “General Iroh” you smiled recognising the close friend of your father “I’m so glad you could attend”. Iroh smiled back “of course, Bumi has been talking non stop about this Huan person, so when I heard you were having an exibition I had to come”. “Thank you sir” Huan nodded to him, a little stunned the future fire lord had actually turned up. Huan seemed to be momentarily struggling with words so you took over the conversation. “Are you enjoying yourself so far? What do you think of the art?” you asked and Huan tensed even more. Iroh frowned “well you know y/n were not great appreciators of art in the fire nation, so I have to admit my opinion is only that of a rookie but I am honestly very impressed” Iroh grinned and Huan raised an eyebrow “you are?”. Iroh nodded “this new art is so fresh and un-fire nation I think it’s exactly what we need, a fresh perspective” Iroh nodded and Huan nodded back “wow that’s...thank you”. You grinned at Huan’s adorable reaction to praise of his work and held his arm tighter. “Now like I said I won’t pretend to be an expert but maybe you could indulge me” Iroh went on “what was your thought process for the harmonic convergence pieces?". You watched Huan relax, now in his favourite domain, as he begun to explain his process to Iroh. The more he spoke about his art the more enthusiastic he became, the colour coming back to his cheeks as he proudly discussed his work. You were with the future fire lord but you couldn’t stop staring at your boyfriend and how amazing and adorable he was.

3 hours later

Huan switched the lights to his room on and with a dramatic sigh collapsed on the sofa “that was nice but i’m done being social for a while”. You laughed but totally agreed, Huan desereved all the time off he wanted after the success he just had. Every single one of his pieces had sold raising a huge amount for the refugees.. Huan’s name had been thoroughly publicised and you figured everyone in the art world would know who he was now. He was bound to get an influx of attention and projects soon so for now he deserved to rest. Huan’s family were back in the living room celebrating but Huan was socalised out so you happily retreated into his room with him. Huan had his eyes closed, savouring the wonderful silence and you smiled down at him. You brushed a piece of hair out of his face and admired his content expression. Huan’s olive eyes flickered open and he smiled pulling you to lay beside him. He turned on his side to face you and you felt him watching you. You suspected he was thinking of how to tell you something. Huan sometimes struggled expressing hismelf verbally so you’d learnt to just give him time and not to rush him. “Thank you” Huan said suddenly and you paused “for what?”. Huan tutted “where do i start? For organising this whole thing, for using your contacts to get everyone from water tribe inventors to fire nation royalty to come, for encouraging me” he trailed off “I never imagined I could do something like this but you just...had this faith in me”. “Of course I did” you smiled “you’re the most talented man I know! I knew that from when I first saw you and now everyone knows it!”. Huan blushed bashfully so you saved him the effort of a response and kissed him softly. Huan wasn’t one for overly aggresive or full on affection but that was just fine with you. You liked the soft sweet kisses better than the dominant harsh ones and Huan seemed to agree. He blinked dazed as you pulled away and you smiled at him “plus you don’t need to thank me, i’d do anything for you”. Huan believed you, that wasn’t just an empty promise, you really meant it and he knew you truly would do anything as long as it made him happy. He also knew he’d do the exact same for you and was thinking of a way to put it into words when there was a knock on his door.

"Huan y/n’s father is downstairs waiting to walk her home" his aunt Lin called through the door and Huan sighed “I don’t want you to go”. “Me either” you agreed and Huan pouted "I wish you could just stay over". You smiled but blushed "me too but I don’t think telling my dad i’ll be spend the night at yours would go down well". Huan sighed but knew you were right so nodded. You got off the sofa and he followed. "I’ll walk you out". You smiled as he led your downstairs to the lobby where your father was waiting. "Sir" Huan nodded and your father nodded stiffly before pausing "congratulations tonight kid". Huan smiled "thank you". You smiled watching them and stepped beside your father. "Well we should be going, goodnight Huan and well done again" you smiled hugging him tightly "i knew you could do it". Huan was blushing as you pulled away but he smiled "thank y/n". You grinned to see his smile and then followed your dad out of the building.

1 day later

The next day the house was uncharacteristically quiet due to all the excitement the night before. You were in the kitchen with Pema, everyone else dotted through the house in varying stages of wakefulness, when you heard someone yelling your name. You heard the noise getting closer and stepped outside to see Huan running up the path. "Huan?" You smiled, he'd never been to air temple island before so this was a nice suprise. You were just thinking about what part of the island you’d love to show him first when Huan burst with his news. "Y/n look what came this morning" Huan cried, unbothered as a small crowd of your family gathered upon hearing an event unfolding. Huan passed you an envelope and you carefully took out the letter within. It was the finest paper you’d ever felt and the colour such a deep red you should’ve guessed which nation it was from. When you read the letter you almost dropped it in suprise “Huan!”. “I know” he cried as you wrapped him in a giant hug. “Well we don’t know so mind telling us?” Bolin called. "The firelord wants Huan to design some artwork for her palace". The others all exploded into sounds of suprise and cheers but Huan didn’t even notice them. "Iroh Junior must’ve told her about it and now she wants to meet me and have me comission something! Y/n this is all because of you". "No it's not" you pushed him "Huan this is you, all you! This is because you're an amazing artist". Huan blushed but didn’t refuse the compliment which you saw as progress. "She wants to meet with me personally! Y/n will you come with me?" Huan asked "i’ve never been to the fire nation let alone the palace". You nodded "of course! You can stay at our home and we can tour all the city! Huan you're going to love it! You can even stay in our guest room as long as you need!" you were offering when you heard a cough. You turned to see your father stood right behind you an unimpressed look on his face at your offer and paused. "Ow i mean...dad can Huan please stay with us?". Bumi raised an eyebrow before nodding "yes i suppose so". You were both suprised at that and you flung your arms around your dad "thanks dad you're the best!". "Yes well don't make me regret it" he said trying to be stern. Boomi had tried being the stern authoritarian parent but he much more prefered to see you happy than upset, so found it hard to pretend to be serious. He didn't really worry about Huan staying at your home, he trusted you and so he trusted this boy. He just had to act stern to keep Huan on his toes for a while longer....then he could admit he actually liked the boy and approved of this match.

Bumi smiled watching you animatedly tell Huan every single sight you were going to show him in the fire nation and his smile grew at how bewildered Huan clearly was but how he was nodding along for your benefit. Bumi could see how much Huan adored you and decided losing you to him would be okay, if you had to grow up and start dating someone he was glad it was Huan Beifong.

I was so pleasantly suprised by how many Huan fans there are out there! He is definitely the most under-rated Beifong so this is for Huan rights!!!

I might do a part 3 with them actually going to the fire nation, meeting Izumi etc but i’ll see :)

okay so somebody asked me to rank the green lanterns a couple days ago and i just did it based on the general Vibes i got off each one because i don't know enough about the lanterns and now i want to hear from an expert SO: RANK EACH OF THE GREEN LANTERNS (the human ones but if you want to include others go crazy) FROM NOT-SO-BEST TO BEST AND EXPLAIN WHY

OKAY SO, first off, i love you. you should know that. second off, there’s good and bad sides to all four human green lanterns and really this is just personal preference, and 3/4 of these are subject to change at some point, but this is where we stand as of right now:

4. Guy Gardner

first off, he was Hal’s case worker in Emerald Dawn II (1991), because Hal got in trouble for drunk driving and got sentenced to a maximum security prison for 90 days to be used as an example. And I just, I don’t like this plot in Hal’s life, it doesn’t make a ton of sense with his character or his profession (it would literally end a pilot’s career.) anyway, enough about Hal Jordan because I’m supposed to be talking about Guy here. Guy’s trying to help Hal out which, gets him points in my book, but he also ends up like hating Hal at the end of this arc and it’s just like, I’m sorry, that’s unoriginal, pls try harder.

I also don’t understand this whole Vuldarian DNA plot that’s a thing with him, but his time owning a bar is cool. I just, I haven’t read a ton of his comics and i haven’t gotten attached to him yet, so that’s that. He’s in 4th, sorry Guy. Better luck next time.

3. Kyle Rayner

Kyle gets third place for two reasons: he has some pretty great interactions with Hal, with some key points of believing in Hal when he needs it the most (and that panel with the stacked rings and Hal taking Kyle flying. That panel gives me life for reasons I can’t fully put into words.), and his girlfriend was literally murdered and stuffed into a fridge. I have to respect the trauma.

Reasons I don’t like Kyle: you know how in middle school there was always that kid who would show off in gym class? or like your favorite teacher would pick some new kid to champion and you just kinda... hated them on instinct? Kyle’s an artist, but he has that vibe. He’s the kid in school that suddenly everyone has decided is the Best and it’s annoying. I get it, he’s meant to be like the “best green lantern,” the one to restore the corps when Hal and Parallax tore through it and then he’s a white lantern. I just... idk, he’s nice, he’s cute. I want to read more about when he was teamed up with Jason and some people have made it so that Hal has become his bother father figure which is also adorable, it’s just instinct to not make him my favorite. I’ve already done the whole phase of liking the ‘Chosen One,’ I don’t need to go back to my Harry Potter phase. idk, please universe don’t hate me for this.

2. John Stewart

okay, I have mad respect for John Stewart. It’s also instinctual. He’s the brains of the human Green Lantern operation. No, like, literally. If the four of them have one collective brain cell, John has it at least 89% of the time. He’s an architect and a former Marine, he punched Hal in the face in a bar before they were both Green Lanterns, which is hilarious because as far as I’m aware, it’s never touched on as being something either of them remembers. Kudos for not holding onto that rage, John. Hal has something to learn from you.

There’s also an interesting change in his way of thinking from when he was a Marine to his duty as a Green Lantern, and I like that growth even if it’s not always acknowledged. There is a bit during the Color Spectrum War arc where they go over his guilt at the destruction of a world, and it felt remarkably deep for a DC comic, even if it was technically part of a Hal series. He’s just one of those guys that you can’t help but respect because he seems to have all of his shit in one basket, and it’s a good counterbalance.

1. Hal Jordan

you knew this was coming. if you didn’t, then you need to go look back at what my username is and think for a while. I love Hal Jordan almost more than life itself and it might be because of how well i can relate to this man. he is the most cocky, depressed, stubborn piece of shit in the galaxy, and I LOVE HIM. okay, like, there are so many different arcs about Hal and I know people have a tendency to not like him because like he’s the modern OG and he can be a piece of shit, and like, he was the bad guy but he came back from it and I just want to say: my dudes, that’s the POINT.

Hal has flat out stated that HE doesn’t even like himself, and you think that you as a reader are supposed to like him all the time? The man's life is rife with trauma, okay. Not everything he does is going to make perfect sense if you’re not paying attention and it’s just like. Honestly I can’t explain it all. Hal runs on spite and coffee and the list of people he lives FOR is very short, but the list of people he lives IN SPITE OF is very long.

The dude runs with his gut constantly because that’s what keeps him alive. Even Sinestro has pointed out that HAL DOESN’T MAKE SENSE. He acts on instinct, he doesn’t plan out a shitload of battle strategies, and that’s how Hal manages to keep besting these people over and over.

Also just, he’s sad boy. He wants to protect people, even if it means staying away from them. He’s willing to take the blame and appear to go rogue MULTIPLE TIMES for things he believes in and to find the root of the problem and it’s just like... you really think a guy that was happy-go-lucky and didn’t sit awake at night because of how prominent his failings are in his mind would be willing to do that? you’re wrong. sorry. you don’t designate yourself as public enemy number one AFTER ALREADY FIGHTING TO COME BACK FROM THAT ONCE if you don’t have a part of your brain saying you deserve it.

ALSO HIS GRIEF FOR COAST CITY WAS JUSTIFIED AND THERES A LONG LIST OF PEOPLE THAT COULD HAVE HELPED PREVENT HAL FROM BECOMING/SUCCUMBING TO PARALLAX AND A LOT OF THEM ARE ON THE JUSTICE LEAGUE OR TINY ANCIENT BLUE SMURFS.

I have thoughts. Who knows if they are coherent at all. But anyways. Something that I have noticed is that in this fandom there isn't neccesarily a lot of shipping discourse as in ship wars, but there tends to be more either fighting over which ship gets the most content or pitting two characters in a relationship or that have feeling for each other against one another in a competition if sorts. Usually arguing about who is "better" and who is more deserving of the other.

And something I've also noticed is that this seems to happens more with the mlm ships in the fandom. I've spoken before about how I have an issue with how CC always portrays all of her mlm ships with so much anger and animosity between each other. And before anyone says anything, yes I know all if the ships gave conflict. That's not what I'm talking about.

What I'm talking about is not relationship sad angst of "oh we shouldn't be together, but we want to!" I'm talking about pushing each other off of a glacier type aggression. I'm talking about the kind of fights that Kieran and Mark had in los that don't really compare to Emma and Julian's pining and drama routines. The closest they got was probably that one line Julian had where he attacked Emma for breaking up with Mark.

And then theres the venom Thomas spews at Alastair. And Kit's whole rant to Ty after the failed necromancy. And you could argue that it's because the plot warranted it, but then I would ask "why those particular plotlines for the mlm ships?"

Anyways putting that aside, I think the fandom actually perpetuates this even further in some cases. And yes, I know! I have been guilty of this myself and I'm sorry. But I'm not interested in calling people out because I no longer believe shame is helpful.

I wanna examine why this happens. And my personal theory is toxic masculinity and the way we view men in this society. Something that I've noticed is prevalent in a lot of mlm ships in media is both aggression and competition. I think we as a society have created the idea that men are always competing with each other to be the best and to get the best things, the best job, the best title, the most recognition, the most awards or whatever. In I'm some cases it's even true, because I think society expects that of men. It also teaches men that aggression is normal and healthy and violence is part of being "the best man."

So then in relationships between men, it would make sense that those things would pop up. BUT that doesnt make it ok and that doesnt mean that it should be normalized and even idolized in media. And men aren't the only ones perpetuating these stereotypes. Most shippers of mlm in fandoms are women. And when I see the kinds of ships most women, especially straight women go for in media, it's usually characters who are super aggressive or competitive with each other. See Shameless for example.

And as much as I love kitty's first meeting, we should have a conversation about people, YES even me, romanticizing and even sexualizing Ty holding a knife to Kit's throat. I do it all the time, and I don't think I ever really stopped to unpack that. And we all of course have our own reasons for preferring Ty over Kit or Kit over Ty or Alastair over Thomas or whatever. Son of a Preacher

Summary: Patton Hart lives in a small town. As son of the local preacher, he’s supposed to be an example of a good Christian son. While trying to meet expectations, one boy might change his life.

Pairings: Mainly intruality, with side analogical and roceit

A/N: I know my writing style is weird short little ‘scenes’. Its easier for my brain to process short chunks.

Chapter 2

“Can I kiss you?”

Patton sits hesitantly for a moment. He was scared of being caught or of it being some joke to out him. He was scared of the idea of being homeless or in some camp. He was scared of enjoying it and falling for someone only to have his heart broken.

He must’ve been silent for too long, as Remus started to stand up. Patton takes a deep breath and grabs his arm.

Now or never.

“Kiss me”

Patton feels a pair of lips on his. They were surprisingly soft and gentle, almost cautious as they kissed him. For a moment, all his anxiety left him. He had never felt more alive than he does right now.

And just as soon as it began, it was over. “We wouldn’t want to get caught~” He says with faux-cockiness before softening. “I-I know your dad won’t approve, Lord knows mine never has...”

Patton frowns “He won’t... but I think this is worth a little risk, don’t you?” He asks with a hopeful glance. He finds himself staring at him and- was Remus... blushing?

The punk boy looks up “I think it is...you only just technically met me. How can you trust me?”

Patton snorts “Because anytime you’d prank Roman’s friends at sleepovers, you’d leave me and my sleeping bag alone.” He jokes with a grin.

Remus chuckles. “Maybe that was my greatest scheme... build up trust with pranks~”

Patton smiles then checks his watch. “Shoot, I gotta go, I’m gonna be late for dinner!” He shoots up off the bench quickly.

“Same time tomorrow?”

He nods and leaves with a kiss on Remus’ cheek.

Patton sneaks inside, hoping he’s not too late. He creeps into the living room before being confronted by his mother.

“Where have you been?”

Patton nervously stutters. “I-I was at the park with new friend... I lost track of time.”

Mrs. Hart narrows her eyes at him, scanning him up and down. “And who is this new friend?”

“Remus Prince...” Patton says, hoping she wouldn’t kill him.

“You mean Roman’s failure of a brother? The one who smokes and drinks during church? The faggot?! Patton how could you!!!” She booms.

Patton thinks quickly, trying to keep himself calm. “I-I’m the preacher’s kid right? I’m supposed to help lead people to God. Maybe if I befriend him... it’ll help.”

Mrs. Hart’s tune changes instantly. “Your father is gonna be so proud of you! You should tell him at dinner!”

Patton sighs and nods with a half-smile. “I will... Hey I’m gonna go wash up.”

“Don’t be too long, dear!”

Patton sighs and walks into the bathroom, breaking down a little. He’d barely held it in before, hearing his mother say faggot with such disgust was horrible.

Why did it have to be this hard?

“You kissed my brother?” Roman asked in shock.

“Shhhh, keep your voice down! Yes I did.” Patton smiles with a light blush.

Virgil looks up from his phone “Is there a problem, Ro?”

Roman crosses his arms. “Yeah! My brother and my best friend like each other...”

“What, like you haven’t tried getting into your brother’s best friend’s pants?” Virgil smirks.

“I am no-”

“Then why do you talk about him all the time. Now if I could go back to studying, that would be great.” Logan huffs, not looking up from his book.

Patton shoves his food around with his fork sadly “Look, if you don’t want anything further to happen, I’ll end it before it develops into anything. I just- I don’t know how long it’ll be before I get another chance like this again.”

Roman sighs. “Pat... Fine. I give you permission to date my brother.”

“Really?!” Patton immediately perks up and hugs his friend. “Thank you Roman!”

“You’re welcome Pat... but if I ever walk in on you two fu-”

“Roman!” Patton snaps, bright red.
