Hiii Everyone!!!

I've been around for years now and have never introduced myself. mainly cause I just choose to vibe and enjoy the posts people share, but first time for everything. You can just call me Key, I'm 24 and I go by she/her. I enjoy a variety of stuff from manwha, manga, anime, video game franchises, and just a bunch of other animated media you name its probably buried down in my blog somewhere. Every now and then I get motivation to create fanfiction. I have only written works the Dragonball and Super Mario fandom All my works are under the "Keep Reading". My DMs and askbox here is always open if you ever want to chat I apologize in advance if I come across as a bit awkward (socializing is not a strong suit of mine) or if it takes me a minute to reply (adulting and hobbies am I right?), otherwise I'm a pretty chill person. Thats about it!

One of these days I really want to change my Penname...But I've had it for years now and I'm way too attached to it lmao.

Super Mario Fics: So a lot of these are Princess Peach centric and I'm just crafting up an origin story and some other events following the 2023 film. Dragonball Fics: The first fandom I have ever written for (and by penname you could probably tell what I read mostly) I have only shared them on FFN and AO3 until now. I was just starting to write fanfiction with the first two so they might be kinda cringe I guess but that's 16 year old me for you haha. gonna embrace the cringe by sharing it on here anyways.

Even when I started making fics I'm still not sure what goes through my mind when it comes to the title or chapter titles its literally the first thing that comes to mind and nothing after that but we will get it one day for sure.

Here's Some WIPs (that's both written and not) you guys can look forward too from me. I'll remove them and add them under the appropriate fic tags once I post them:

Uncle Yamcha fic: It is currently three chapters. The first one is him and Trunks, second is Marron, and the third one is Bra/Bulla. I really want to think of one for him and Goten but nothing has come to my mind. I just think he's more close to Krillin and Bulma where he'd interact more with their kids and I can't think of a scenario for him and Goten or what they would even talk about but maybe something will come. (I've currently sent this off to my Beta for review but lemme know if you guys want to see the un-beta'd version I have on here cause I'm really forward to sharing it)

Untitled EOZ fic following after Goku leaves the Tournament grounds to train Uub. This one sits at about 8k words (not sure exactly cause I added a bunch of notes at the end for my beta to see where my thoughts were going with it all) anyways this one focuses mainly on Trunks, Goten, Marron, Pan, and Bra as really the older kids look forward to what may lie ahead. A lot of it is just me focusing on the dynamics they have with each other. When I saw that dlc for kakorat was going to be focused on that one that really makes me want to share this one. Again let me know if you want to see that.

Based on this Ask here you can already see that I've completed 2 out of my 5 ideas so that leaves the other ones and maybe more if I think of anything else. All of these will probably be added to my Little Events fic. a few little ideas not shared here but I've thought about and have some dialoge in mind but haven't fully created yet.

I want to do something where Mario and Haru interact I just think it'll be so neat.

Maybe something where I do my take on introducing Sarasland and Princess Daisy. Probably along the lines of Peach meeting Daisy for the first time.

I need to hop on the wholesome bros. content at some point and I know I wanna try my hand with Mia and Pio as a part of it.

I think thats it for now...I'll probably add more if I think of something as having somwhere to put it down no matter how small it is can be nice to look at and push me towards getting it done.

Given that I'm british I figured I would use British Witchcraft as a base.

BUT even so I will be posting information about stuff here even if I won't use it- and will even post links/stuff to deter others away from such a thing. But there will be witches in that world who do practice things such as hoodoo and voodoo I just won't go into detail [but I don't want to make stuff up] it would only be a reflection of the current world as their are people who practice such things bringing an awarness to say they exist in that world isn't the same as appropriating-

For example I don't want all witches to be white witches in my story, I want to include others but not go too far into it but only bring an awarness that they exist. Hence why some of my posts will include things, from others practices but I WILL try to be accomidating and reference if Wiccans approriated or if it's a closed practice and none of my posts are meant to encourage such a thing.

Even so- I am thankful for the people who have messaged/replied and outright told me if something was problematic. I will remove OR reblog relelvent information under such posts but I will have to say [and hope this doesn't come across as rude]

I won't believe in a "This is wrong coz I said so." Especially if I look online and people from that group say it's okay, aka Chakras so I'm unsure as most don't care meanwhile others have stated its a closed practice. [If I make that post I will link to BOTH and stay nuetral but will raise awarness on both sides points]

Or a "I'm an experienced witch." And thats it, theres no links/sources, no information and instead of being helpful and supplying said links they just go.

The mental exhaustion to look up something which simple to them- I have to google EVERYTHING from crystals/tarots/history/ And I'm only looking up the internet thats not counting the BOOKS I havn't written up yet [I won't rewrite everything just the passages so I'm no casually pirating books and sourcing them]

Why do you think I'm here? Also google websites seem biased and from my post about the 'founders of wicca' Gardner wasn't great but that website didn't go into detail. And most websites seem biased as if their painting these individuals with sympathy aka, Margaret murray who 'should' be the founder and its blatantly sexist that everyone assumes it's gardner just to realise that she's just as bad and exagirated most of her information.

It's so easy to just say google it, but googles search engine isn't great and i'll be damned if most of my sources are coming from wikipedia.

Knowing them, they might reduce her character to a meme or her ship with Ishi. In the worst possible universe she becomes one of those ms paint drawn moe anime girls working at mcdonalds or whatever (examples come to mind...konata osaka lain etc). But realistically I wish she'd remain dr fandom exclusive. Frogeru DO NOT go mainstream, worst mistake of your life. I keep going on tangents, im sorry. The fandom would be very divided - those who defend and love her (and Ishi) with their life and those who are stupid 😆 just kidding. She's a more watered down version of Hiyoko, she's a lot nicer to those who deserve it, but she doesn't refrain from mean remarks and behaviour towards her other classmates. She would be so damn popular in the cosplay part of the community, akin to Ibuki. I'm still very proud of her design and she looks super fun to cosplay and add personal design headcanons to. And I think she'd be one of the choices for that aesthetically pleasing type of fanart that some artists who only draw like 3 dr girls (chiaki, kaede and junko/kiri) do

I actually think her and Ishi would be a pretty popular ship, definitely their most popular (since I change the story quite a bit in their universe so that Ishi doesnt befriend you-know-who). It might be one of the "basic" ships if thats a thing (like...those who get drawn by literally everyone and are generally accepted by the community; but thats not a bad thing at all😼). They have the appropriate amount of sweetness and angst (not in between them, just the context is angsty) in canon, so they;d have lots of fans, shipping AMVs/PMVs, official art and matching merch <3

15. how does your self insert play a role in the plot of the story? do they help directly defeat the villain, support the heroes, etc.?

I FORGOT ALL THE DR LORE UNRELATED TO MY FAVES SO UH... IDK... I dont think she'd contribute much to the actual plot, but she does have her own super complex side-story, accompanied by a bunch of random characters that get mentioned by name once and appear in a background frame in that damn anime (not "the animation", but like the actual anime i never watched) but still have niche tumblr ask blogs about them. of course she'd be on the side of hope, but she's got more important stuff to care about. like taka's favourite color or how to shave her brother's hair off while he sleeps

Intro to my concept and blog, formal infodumping!

Hello all, this blog was made for a concept i thought of over on my main blog @the-visionary-collective, this account will mostly be run by me (kazzo, the host) but will have some cameos or notes from headmates from time to time if its deemed appropriate for the content

The basic jist of this is i really enjoy infodumping and creating what i call formal infodumps. basically theyre infodumps of anything and everything, formatted and written in a way people can easily understand, it can be for any reason but i specifically made this with people who want to get into a topic but dont have the time/energy/whatever to do the research themselves in mind.

This concept is not exclusive to this blog, i actually am hoping to form a kind of community where people post their versions of formal infodumps, hell maybe there will even be more request blogs made by other people in the future!!

For requests i dont have a form set out yet but the basic guidlines/info is under the cut

Any topic is allowed as long as it isn’t extremely niche (when i say this i mean no publicly accessible info on it, its not publicly known, etc)

When i say any topic i mean any topic, anything from an explanation of a character and their lore, to why dinosaurs went extinct, to a full depth explanation of any peice of media. Anything!!

Topics that are longer in any capacity may take longer to write (for example, if i ever do a homestuck one that one will be long, probably broken into chapters about each act or whatever)

Nsft topics are allowed but will have a warning and a cut before any of the stuff is mentioned (most posts will have cuts, just to avoid mucking up any tags i use)

This blog is radqueer, transid, para, etc friendly by nature and i will take requests related to this

I may also take requests for transitioning tips and general info when it comes to transids in specific

Topics that interest me/i know a lot about will always have first priority to avoid me burning myself out, no harm to topics that dont interest me i just wont have the same passion to finish them as quick

Hi! I don't use this blog!

In fact, it took me 20 minutes to even figure out how to log in! I only remembered it's existance because some bot sent me an ask and it pinged the email I have to use for medical stuff- but i'll give the like. 6 people here, plus anyone who's scrolling through the blog for archival reasons, a quick update on myself and my life, because boy! was i wrong! and being told incorrect information!

So a lot of posts on here are tagged schizophrenia - a diagnosis that several of my doctors very well believed I had. Turns out, if you have been severely and repetitively traumatized for most of your childhood, your brain kinda. puts up walls and is functionally completely disconnected. and when you're a teenager and your brain is supposed to be growing neural connections between itself as it takes on its final leg of the growing journey, if there's Walls in the Way, it results in a degree of weird faux-hallucinations and outrageously unreal beliefs, the latter mostly from you trying to come to a rational conclusion for why you get told weird uncomfortable stories about yourself and are wildly unsure what the fuck they did to you in the hospital to fuck your memory like this. And the answer is nothing, you were in there for 3 days and just cried the whole time, the reason youre missing three weeks is, well. because you have DID. And apparently my therapist had been suspecting this since I was referred to him in the first place, since I was way too lucid and with it to actually be schizophrenic, but my former psych is also his bestie and had told him straight up "oh yeah, I know they were a conflict of interest, but. Its not every day you hear about the kinds of things this kid goes through, find out theyre true, but they only remember some of them at wildly different times, and then get to see DID form before your very eyes." and so on 2/22/22 I was handed my official paperwork because my team was like "i think we need to address some things." and uh. Yeah it came like a wet fish to the face. Turns out Antipsychs were causing half my balance and mood problems AND didnt get rid of the hallucinations because oops, thats not how that kind of 'hallucinating' works! that's the rest of your brain screaming for help! I don't really. publically say much about the kinds of problems my other parts cause for me. its not anyone elses business! you don't need to know! because all of me is Winnie! Regardless of how I choose to spell that or shorten it at any given time! (which is also not a parts thing, thats just a 'my name is hardly as important to me over who i am as a person' thing.) and yeah, I do have to own up to Dumb Shit(tm) the my other parts do regardless of the fact of if I remember doing it or not, because at the end of the day, I, as a singular human being, still did that thing!! I've kinda had to learn what's wrong and right, appropriate and innapropriate, and attone for such. People get very upset with me for referring to my parts as just that-parts. Lots of folk think that I should be calling them "alters", but that simply doesnt fit, for me. It makes the parts of me that are very clearly broken feel more separate, more defined-- which is the exact opposite of what I want. I WANT to be NORMAL. This disease is life ruining. I'm spending most of my adult life being up the shattered pottery that is my childhood- I don't want to be defined as pieces of a broken vase. I am defined as the Vase itself, wether or not you like the kintsugi is a You Problem. this is not your illness; (nor your version of the illness, if you, too, have it, as no two 'vases' break the same.) I personally refuse to not acknowledge the whole vase on any person who does have it. you dont throw away any pieces. that's not how this works. your arent 4 separate people jsut because you dont want to be associated with yourself. you break and mend and break and mend and cry and scream and accept and forgive and hurt and forgive again and become whole. To do anything else rejects your function as exactly what you are- perfectly human, an animal with neatly clipped claws and blunt teeth and marked skin and stands upright on its hind legs, defined only by its ability to create a taxonic system that cleanly defines it and then outwardly reject that very same label.

oh btw if u have any thoughts on like. i suppose small celebs but even like “popular” blogs on tumblr being treated as just channels for people to throw their thoughts at rather than people to engage with, id love to hear!! it’s a weird niche thing i’ve been thinking about a lot but i have no idea how to articulate it and i like how u word things

omg i was literally thinking about this yesterday and mourning all the people who were genuinely interesting and funny and got bogged down by the flood that comes with notoriety where you’re forced to become a one dimensional caricature of yourself. i had typed out a bunch of stuff but it turned into a big block that was hard to understand so like here are my initial thoughts broken into categories and this is not even close to scratching the surface of what i think but. here it is

1. the sheer amount of attention they get. i just know it’s exhausting to even think about posting something. it gets to the point to where every single post comes with the added burden of having to think about every possible response to the post because it’s inevitable that it’ll be taken the wrong way or twisted or misunderstood and you have to decide if it’s even worth it. there’s no way to continue facilitating small discussions at a certain point because you’re bound to have antagonistic viewers or ppl who don’t genuinely want to talk to you and just exist to derail everything so at that point they have to just become like. the most pared down version of themselves possible and be too exhausted to post anything outside of what their audience happily consumes because they can’t deal with the flood that it comes with.

2. the inbox thing!! people do not have boundaries and tend to remove the humanity away from the influencer/blogger (dms and those ask functions on insta stories in terms of influencers in place of asks). like you don’t really view them as a person any more. one thing i’ve noticed on here is a lot of people use popular users’s inboxes as a way to filter their own content and find out what’s “good” or use it as a way to get their own joke/headcanon/whatever into circulation because they don’t get notes. this isn’t when bloggers are talking about something and ppl continue the conversation in asks but like getting asks out of the blue that are literally obviously a tumblr post draft that someone wants to get your approval of is weird and it makes the blogger feel removed from their own sense of humanity as well because they realize they’re sort of being immortalized or turned into a landmark.

3. also continuing on the askbox thing. with both this point and the point i made previously i find myself constantly having to reiterate my boundaries and remind ppl of what is and isnt appropriate to send in an askbox and it is so hard to do without being branded as mean or bitchy. I just remembered I made a post about it here but basically what i said is a lot of ppl use popular bloggers as a stand in therapist or diary and trauma dump while simultaneously guilt tripping ppl into replying. u can read the post i linked for like more thoughts about that. 

4. constantly being watched!! i alr kind of said this but being constantly watched is so overwhelming and kind of trapping in a way, especially with the knowledge that people are looking for any reason to start an argument with you or throw accusations at you.

5. they can get to the point if they’re not careful where their own self image is so warped by it that they buy into the idea that they are like this prominent famous figure. which they might be like thats cool if you are! but you’ve already lost your humanity in the public’s eye and you start to lose your own humanity and morph yourself into the caricature you’ve been presenting because why wouldn’t you! i’ve seen it happen to ppl who gain a little instagram notoriety where they begin to view themselves as a provider or better than others and enter the mindset where people are lucky to be around them and it genuinely deteriorates their ability to keep meaningful relationships bc they lose the ability to separate their persona

ok this was very messy and very surface level and so scattered i wish i had the time to flesh everything out lol but like those r some of the things that came to mind

tl;dr popularity and notoriety strip people of their perceived humanity, exhaust them into becoming caricatures of their former selves, and remove their access to creative outlets or past hobbies because they are constantly being watched and lifted onto a pedestal they never asked to be on

This is simply me putting out there how i feel on the matter to show that there are two sides to this. && to help prevent any further confusion, hurt feelings etc. But i do want to be blunt and honest about how certain things affect me as well]

        I might lose followers for expressing this,  i didn’t want to have to make a post regarding this issue but since it has now come up more than twice, i think its needed.

      As stated in my RULES, Mun does NOT equal Muse. && My version of Luz, is NOT canon. She is not as bubbly, naive, or sacchrinely sweet to everyone she meets. Thats not to say she is MEAN by any stretch of the imagination, but she CAN be Sarcastic, petty, childish, annoying, and BLUNT among other things.

           If this is something you do NOT want your muse exposed to, or you as a mun are prone to taking things quite personally, please unfollow or don’t follow me in the first place. Because I have had multiple instances now, where me simply writing MY MUSE, Ic, as she is in reaction to something or in a thread has made someone upset. (Most things which in knowing my muse and how she is, were very mild, childish actions or comments which were not even intended to be rude, let alone mean.) I have no intention of HURTING anyone with my writing. or triggering someone by accident. I come here to have fun, and to have others enjoy our interactions. And this is not to shame anyone for not enjoying my muse, my characterization, writing, or being upset or having a bad day. Feelings are valid, they’re fickle. I get that. 100%. 

         HOWEVER. what we are NOT going to do, is expect me to CHANGE how I write cottage, or to simply exist on the dash and not be allowed to engage in anything. For fear of my muse not fitting the mold of what others expect luz to be. Even if those words may not be said, when i get flack for simply having cottage BE herself, it comes off as that I am allowed to exist as long as I am not engaging. Which in my opinion is not fair either. Even when an IC interaction is not what i expect, or what i prefer, I simply let it go.As long as it is not truly rude, offensive or problematic,  I do not expect others not to interact with posts open to mutuals. To me? That is not appropriate either, because It would be disrespectful if i did that. 

I will gladly take responsibility both IC and OOC if something TRULY offensive or rude is said, however when it is simple ribbing, or messing around (which is something cottage does to all, friend foe or otherwise), I do not appreciate feeling as though my character is unwelcome because she does not fit what others want her to act like.

Writing Tips

#1) Interchangeable names If you want to bring in another version of a character that has already been introduced, (i.e. time traveling futuristic version, other dimensions, or a resurrected version) and want to either have a big reveal for “Omg thats the same person!” Or “Hey we have two of the same person now what do we call them”, take their name, (If their name is not a super popular name that probably be translated or isn’t a word as well, for example, Grace, Chase, Rose, or Carol, find the base meaning of their name) and translate it into an ancient language like Latin, Yiddish/Hebrew, Sanskrit, Greek, or Chinese. Just make sure that you check with a native speaker so that you don’t make a fool of yourself or accidentally culturally appropriate.

#2) Spice up the vocab, she said. If you find that you haven't used at least a few new words in your WIP, Dont just google “Synonyms for... “ Look up the situation (i.e. “Conflict”, “Hunger”, “Stressful” “Intuition”) then slap the words “thesaurus teacher” on the end. You will get Teacher websites which will list a hell load of relevant synonyms. Wordhippo.com is also amazing.

#3) Medically accurate writing! I CAN’T TELL YOU HOW MANY TIMES PEOPLE HAVE SAVED OTHER PEOPLES LIVES FROM WHAT THEY ONCE READ IN A BOOK. If you are writing a wound, surgery, birth, trauma, or anything like that, do a shit ton of research. I mean a shit ton. You should feel like you yourself could treat someone (or yourself) with your eyes closed! If you can stomach it, look up live surgeries or youtube videos on how to treat the problem. If someone is recovering, look up blogs or stories of people’s first hand experiences. And for the love of God, don’t make a character run around ripping out their IVs!

#4) Relationships <3 No matter if the relationship is healthy or downright manipulative or abusive, please dont misrepresent it. Use the little things. Don’t convince your readers that Mr Abusive Playboy is redeemable since he brought his girl a rose. (That teaches a buy/sell mentality; “Oh, he brought me flowers, now I have to give something back.”) There are a million types of relationships. Once you know what you want to write, consider what it says to your audience. But whatever you do; Don’t. Normalize. Abuse!

#5) Weapons, mwahahahahaaa! When your character is wielding a sword, a gun, and knife, a bomb, a shard of glass; anything they are fighting with, please consider the weapon’s affect on the wielder as well. I’m going to go down a list of weapons and how they wear you down in a fight. These are basic overviews so you have an idea of wear to start.

Knives- It’s all in the wrists. If you have been trained or have a lot of practice, this will be a deadly weapon to use. If not, it’s easy to be knocked from the wielder’s hands, and if dull, is virtually useless.

Swords- They are basically extensions of your arm. Hold it right. Long swords require two hands, dominant hand on top. Katanas are designed for two hands, but are still perfectly useful with one. Double swords are good for offence and sneak attacks. Cutlasses and rapiers are mostly time-period specific, and are mostly used for sport now. Cavalry swords are short so you dont get your sword stuck and have to leave it behind while in a battle. All battle worthy swords must be properly oiled and cleaned when needed. Another thing; After a while in battle, an untrained wielder’s Brachialis muscles will begin to ache from the swinging, then shoulders, soon followed by the rest of the arm, depending in the weight of your sword. If your book is historically based, check the quality of steel/iron/bronze that humanity had achieved at that point. Don't write about swords holding perfectly through battle. Ancient iron and bronze were brittle and soft. They broke, bent, and dented. Once again, do research!

Bombs- there is so much variation. But for military grade shells (which are not the same thing) it’s easy to kinda mash them all together. after anything really explodes, there is a loud, ear piercing bang that will leave anyone within proximity who is not dead with a ringing in their ears. this can lead to deafness or ear problems, occasionally tinnitus. People usually dont go flying in the air. That is mostly cinema. People do, however, get hit by a shockwave/blast that can throw them back and onto the ground. Burns and shrapnel are your biggest threat.

Guns- there is always kickback! you dont just pick up a gun and not be surprised the first time. For handguns, the smaller the gun, the bigger the kickback. The bigger the gun, the more there is to absorb the shock. you don’t have endless rounds. Magazines (the place you put the bullets) can take concentration and a hot second to load. Guns should not get wet. They should always be kept on safety when not ready to shoot at any moment.

Spears- when throwing a spear, throw it with your hand on it’s center of balance (the part of the shaft where it is perfectly balanced) After that, it’s practice, more practice, then more!

Sharp objects- I mean shards of glass, exacto knives, shrapnel, wood spikes, ect should be stealth weapons. Don’t try to fight someone with it. This is for when you must sneak up on someone or saw through rope or something. Unless your sharp object has a section wrapped in cloth or already another grip, please be careful. It is very unwise to cut your hands. You have so many intricate tendons and nerves. It’s not worth losing your clenching strength just for an owie. Please, protect your hands. When you use them, aim for the neck, wrists, and eyes. Those are your most effective points for injury.

Punching/close combat- If you are inexperienced or untrained, just go for the defensive. dont wear yourself out. Then go get yourself a teacher. Close combat takes skill and knowledge. If you have to punch, swing up, hit with your lower palm or the space between you thumb and hand. The abductor pollicis transversus muscle, your elbow, and your thighs are some the strongest parts of your body even without training. Use them.

Bow and Arrows- This is practice-nessesary weapon. You cant just pick it up and use it willy nilly. It’s so easy to let the bowstring hit your arm when you fire, which can leave a NASTY burn. This can be because your stance is wrong, the draw is to far, you're gripping to tight, or youre using the wrong part of your hand. (When holding your bow, the bow grip should be sitting against the pad of your thumb. If your bow sits too deep into your hand, that can cause torque, which will rotate the bowstring towards your forearm.) Remember the abductor pollicis transversus muscle? Well, it’s back, as that should be where the bow rests against your aim hand, while your arrow hand draws the arrow fletching all the way back to your ear, so that your dominant eye can look straight down the arrow, and you can properly aim. you should always compensate for distance, depending on the weight of your draw. It’s all physics! But seriously, most archers will “get to know” their bow so that they are not caught off guard. Do further research to differentiate between compound bows, long bows, recurve bows, ect.

Biological warfare- surprisingly, The first account of the intention to use biological weapons is possibly recorded in Hittite texts of 1500–1200 BCE, in which people sick with tularemia were driven into enemy lands, causing an epidemic. In Medieval times, armies would catapult plague infected body parts over the walls of the cities they had besieged in order to kill off population. Biological warfare comes in many different forms. If you invent a disease, I suggest that you make a profile of it and figure out the following; how it spreads, what part of the body it attacks, what results of that attack, symptoms, is it hereditary, is immunity hereditary, what age group does it hit hardest, lasting effects (i.e. infertility, blindness, or paralysis) and if the disease is curable.

#6) Multilingual people -  Please dont use the words you know in a language just to feel good about yourself for knowing it. Speak with a native speaker to find realistic phrases, reactions, slang, and conversation so you don’t make a fool of yourself. If the character is ethnic, talk with a member of that ethnicity to avoid offensive cliches, incorrect information, and cultural appropriation. It’s okay to appreciate and adopt parts of a culture you love, but it’s not okay to misrepresent it and claim it as your own without giving credit where credit is due.

#7) Clothing  If you have built a world, consider loyalty-based clothing (Like how the scots had tartan with family specific plaid patterns, and how native americans had different ceremonial clothing depending on which tribe you were from) If so, find ways to work this into your WIP. does your character have a uniform or expected apparel? if so, how do they make it their own?

back in undergrad, i was invited to do a senior thesis. i wanted to do mine on language and gender because my (problematique fave) professor whose class got me into the field at the start just... wouldn't use my pronouns. she's very bad at using pronouns and frankly i think she does not understand limits. a philosophy of language class does not mean you get to just say ~whatever.~

basically, this project was borne out of "hey! use my fucking pronouns :))" i had (have) pretty severe "i can fix her" disease :// i....... was not a really great student in undergrad. people who have followed me since then can probably attest to that through my personal ramblings. my advisor (a different professor) was disappointed in me like the whole way through and i live in constant fear that she will find this blog and go "oh! thats why you didnt pay attention in class, dumbass :)" (though maybe she would see this post and say "oh.... growth :)" who's to say)

but see, though i struggled to get myself to stay engaged in my advisor's class, both she and that problematique fave had assigned texts that would lend themselves beautifully to my dream project - even though i just..... had a terrible habit of misunderstanding readings to basically an absolute inverse degree. like it's a chronic issue. maybe i should have figured out "this is what im understanding so the opposite is probably more correct." i'm working on it, though, and i'm better at getting it the second time around now that im in grad school. ^^;;

SO this brings me back to my thesis: basically, why does language matter? one of my chapters was about representation. i talked about janet in the good place reminding people every day, "not a girl." i talked about haruhi fujioka from ouran high school host club, "i don't care if people see me as a guy or a girl. it's what's on the inside that's important." i talked about stevonnie from steven universe, being the first fusion to be addressed with they/them pronouns. i talked about jesse and james from pokemon and their frequent "gender swapped" costumes. and, at last, i talked about sailor uranus - tenou haruka - using both masculine and feminine self-referential language and presentation.

the thesis statement of my tragically mediocre thesis paper is basically "when you have access to language, you can better describe your experience and understand the experiences of others." you can come to a stronger self-understanding, form connections with others who share some traits, discover community, come into support, enact change, and so on.

the paper im writing "writing" right now for my epistemology class is pretty much an elevated version of that, though i'm focusing less on gender identity and discussing like.... more like the "concept of identity" itself. one of my first grad classes was hermeneutics - the study of meaning, where it comes from and where it leads - and there is so much ~delicious~ overlap between the texts for that class, those from the undergrad class on language, the undergrad class on gender and intersectionality, and my current class. my current paper is on "epistemic injustice;" that is, lack of access to language (whether deliberately or unconsciously through systems that no single individual person had set up) puts people at disadvantage for the huge sector of life that they otherwise could understand.

ALL THIS to say, i was a snarky asshole in undergrad but i have very real investment in media representation. if i had watched she-ra before i presented my paper, i would have included double trouble (my beloved), and i have yet to watch owl house but i see there's another they/them? we love they/thems <33 i am always thinking back on when korrasami became canon, how that was a huge moment of positive bisexual representation. i think about sophia in orange is the new black, introducing to a more adult audience different layers and kinds of violences that she and other trans women, especially she as a black trans woman, are uniquely at risk for.

my graduate school thesis is going to diverge a bit from the language of justice and of personal and group understanding to an even broader scale, though i am going to have a lengthy chapter on the matter. (literally like one hour ago i emailed my county representatives to say "hey, the training material for my substitute teaching agency Fucking Sucks, how can i help bring appropriate language and subsequent recognition of mentally ill, neurodivergent, and disabled folks to the stage?")

the many forms of the philosophy of language is what sparked my passion for the field, and i want to give language to those who may have difficulty understanding texts like i do. i want to take all that i am learning and share it as best i can with others, or at the very least, use it to aid my interactions with others. that's why i have this stupid tongue-in-cheek blog in the first place! academic shitposts and some current social and political events are so important to share.

i do have a side blog for fandom shit since i wasnt smart enough to make that the main and this the side, so fan artists see @/daddy-socrates liking their posts and i am So Sorry About That but like... i don't want to take everything in life so, so, gravely seriously. OBVIOUSLY there are subjects and scenarios that are not to be joked about, but i think we get so bogged down in the severity of all the global problems that we forget to play around a bit. purposely putting a handful of anime characters into my undergrad thesis was my way of being both playful and highlighting how fun is a critical social learning tool. it may well have been the only really solid thing about that project, honestly. i hope that in the future i can revamp it, using what i have now.

study plans?

recently i feel like my friend going to japanese college has motivated me to try to start studying japanese again. plus some spontaneous chinese here and there, more vocab/pronunciation/tone focused rather than grammar right now.

ended up a kinda long ramble lol, ill cut it up into two pieces.

i literally do daily: 1 duolingo so the owl doesnt hunt me down like the weak prey i am (any language)

i try to do once a day: 1 or 2 anki decks for vocab. for japanese i use many: JLPT N4, Genki 1 & 2 Including Genki Supplementary Vocab,  Core 2k/6K Optimized Japanese Vocabulary, 2500 Most-Used kanji. For Chinese I use the HSK level 1/2/3 word list. these are seperate, just a pain to type lol. i dont use wanikani actually lol. the renaming of radicals annoyed/confused me, who was forced to learn the names of the very proper strokes in high school chinese lol. plus having no assessment test and having to start over from the very beginning and then getting the simplest kanji wrong because i remember the radical by its shape or a stroke by its proper chinese name and not a silly american name (no i did not learn this character is actually wearing a hat or a pot lid. thats weird.), i just got kinda annoyed and went back to simple anki flashcards lol.

3-4 times a week: going over 2-4 grammar concept from genki 2 so far. partly because when i was studying with my 2 friends over the summer we were doing a cramming thing for our friend to to get up to standards of the college they were transferring to, now attending. as a result, we uhh. kinda skipped over basically all vocab. only did the grammar, and sometimes not even all the grammar. we skipped over really simple stuff (ie the volitionary form which is just slapping a ~ou/おう at the end of things) and the stuff that was just -te form + some extra words. so i’m finally properly going over that stuff in full, alone. plus im rewriting/digitizing my notes in onenote bc pencil and pen kinda smear/fade over time so this will just be better if i want to go to my notes for reference in the future. the ease of searching by control+f is also nice compared to flipping thru pages in confusion. i also feel like my learning style is def repetitive related, so going over things a second time works for me. (for japanese im using using genki 2/the genki 2 track on bunpro.jp. (this website is incredible and for the most part free. even if you want the premium sub version, the cheapest sub plan is $2 a month! while i dont have it, i did do the free trial when i first signed up and it was ok and you can totally do the free version and get all the barebones japanese grammar explanations from like 4 different textbooks) when/if i ever finish genki 2, ill just check out the minna no nihongo track on bunpro, more to see if there’s any grammar that gets covered in that one that genki doesnt have. if they’re just the same but a different order or something, ill just move on to the tobira track since its the intro to real intermediate japanese grammar.) i might check out the free textbook irodori, more out of curiosity than seriousness honestly. iroiro uses a different fluency grading system than the common JLPT N5-1 levels, iroiro uses the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment, or CERFL. Since im focusing on the JLPT N level standards and these are totally different curriculums and stuff, im not sure how helpful irodori will be to me at this point but ill look at it because its a free textbook. when i try to relearn chinese again ill dig out my integrated chinese textbooks (goodreads), only intermediate since i seem to have lost my beginner editions somewhere in my house between moving from college dorm to house every summer ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ . i might check out the all set learning site, it seems to both HSK and CERFL. ill probably review the HSK 1-2 stuff real quick since thats basically what i learned in high school/college and i kinda forget a lot since its been like 6 years now. then ill maybe hopefully finally get to HSK 3. ill try to watch videos from yoyochinese on youtube too. she explains things really clearly and helpfully to native english speakers in a way that my previous teachers havent been able to. ill stick to the youtube tho since ive heard that the actual courses from her website are very expensive for online self study tho, and purchasing a regular textbook would be cheaper lol. 

once a week: try to use words from anki decks + whatever grammar i learned in practice sentences/make up sentences yourself. this is a bit hard bc since im self studying if my sentences end up wrong/sounding awkward to a native speaker i am not really sure how to check lol. i’m on polyglot.city (a mastodon instance focused on language learning/blogging) and i post there sometimes and people have helped me/rated my sentences every now and then but recently its been very slow. (japanese, altho i hope that i regain enough of my mandarin skills to do this again sometime)

every 2 weeks: after accumulating grammar for a bit, i try to read a grade/language level appropriate short story in the language. (hint: the level of a toddler probably lol.) for japanese i started using satori reader, altho other short story apps exist. for chinese there’s du chinese and tcb/the chairman’s bao. honestly i use du chinese just because im too lazy to make an account for tcb, altho i may finally make an account and use it one day. one day..... (japanese and chinese)

for japanese i just want to get to tobira right now and then long term is simply reaching what is probably jlpt n3, the typical not quite fluent but still ok enough to conduct business or ask a native speaker for help in a convenience store. kinda eh, a good middle intermediate level. from that point, i should be ok enough to try to read a YA novel. no not a light novel (might try it tho) but like a regular novel for middle schoolers. or maybe doremon? ill see where it goes from there. i hope to at least be able to understand some of the things an average person would like a weather forecast on the nhk or a short newspaper article. maybe ill take the actual jlpt test someday.....not sure how to sign up/where to find it in my city tho....

for chinese, i just want to know more vocab and improve my tones/pronunciation right now.

Context matters more than anything.  Blind removal of words we personally don’t like is not a way to build a conscientious community.  

Baby witch: I’ve never liked the term personally and have never used it to reference myself or others.  But if people want to use it for themselves,  it doesn’t hurt anyone. Fluffy Bunny:  Yes, this one is mostly used as an insult.  I agree that it truly has no place being used.  But if people wish to attempt to reclaim it that’s their prerogative and im not going to berate them for it.

Elder: This is an important term in some traditions and if you don’t want to use it personally? That’s fine. However,  many traditions defer to elders as teachers and places to seek guidance.  It’s not our job to police someones language,  especially considering this term is used by many indigenous religions.  You can warn people of the signs of a dangerous religious authority without telling long established practices that they can’t have their own name for a long term practitioner.

Maiden/ Mother/ Crone: This is a practice specific term.  Most forms of witchcraft or pagan religions don’t use this.  It’s common in wiccan groups,  but not always used.  Regardless,  there is a Male version too (though the roles tend to vary between traditions.  

It can seem exclusionary in group settings unless all have agreed upon it,  but if someone wants to use this in their personal practice as a reference to their journey,  we have no business telling them not to.  As long as they are not forcing the idea onto others,  their practice is theirs and weve no right to tell them how to practice.  

And no,  posting about it on their personal blog doesn’t count as pushing it onto others just because others can read it.

THAT’S something that needs to be phased out in this community.   Constant scrutiny of language used in another’s personal practice when they’re making no push for you to use it needs to STOP.  Just because they post about it doesn’t mean you have to do anything with that post.

If it doesn’t connect with you and your practice,  don’t reblog it.  Or make your own post. It’s that simple.

I think that modernizing our language is important, because may terms used in paganism can be appropriative, exclusionary, and inaccurate. It’s not ‘policing’ language to ask people to use better and more inclusive terms.

I should also clarify that I am talking about using these terms in general, and not telling someone how to live.

As I have said in many clarifications, if people want to use baby witch as a self descriptor, cool. That’s their choice. I have no say in how someone chooses to identify. I managed a pagan bookstore for 7 years, and it is a term I saw used as an insult more often than not. YMMV.

Fluffy bunny, you know what, if people want to reclaim it, great. I have only EVER seen it used as an insult, and being dismissive of other’s paths. I don’t think this is a term that is in any way helpful, reclaimed or not. There are other terms that deserve to be reclaimed far more than this one.

My issue with elder is that it, by default, denotes a certain level of respect and authority, regardless of tradition. Practising for 20 years does not mean someone is an elder. If someone is an elder in one tradition, they are considered to hold that respect and deference in other traditions as well. Unlike the organizations that the term was appropriated from (christians, indigenous groups, etc), there is no central organization to hold these people to account should they become abusive, which has happened many many times. And while you do mention we shouldn’t police the language of indigenous groups, I did note that this list is specifically regarding pagan terms.

Regardless of whether m/m/c has a male equivalent, it’s still unnecessarily gendered. I wrote a whole post on degendering witchcraft practices for those who find the inherent sexual and gendered terms outdated, or folks who are trans or non-binary or asexual.

I think that pagans in general do not like to be questioned, not do we like to do the self examination of our traditions or practices. Whether that is because we don’t want to adhere to dogma, or whether we came from oppressive religious backgrounds, I don’t know. I do know that practice should be ever growing and changing, and no tradition is older than 70 years, and was created by people far less woke than us. Language is also ever evolving, and there are countless examples of language that used to be acceptable that is no long acceptable to use. Maybe there are not people forcefully pushing that language on everyone, but it appears in countless books and traditions, and younger or new practitioners should have a choice.

And, at the end of it, no one has to listen to anyone. People can do what they want, identify how they want. However, there are a heck of a lot of other people younger than me who are writing and talking about modernizing witchcraft, and those voices are so vital and important now. I have no more authority than anyone else.
