a while ago i made a post about naddpod music and @metamagic-adept brought up kingshammer in the replies. and yeah, i can't resist. so. kingshammer essay, let's do this.
first of all: huge, huge thanks to @operationslipperypuppet for helping me with this; she found a bunch of uses (esp for c3) and contributed truly so much to the analysis as well.
now, the use of kingshammer differs by campaign. so! really quickly. here is every use of kingshammer in naddpod.*

(note: uses in c1 marked as a * are credited instead as "A Sight For Sore Eyes", and i'd also like to mention that i didn't exclude side campaigns or oneshots from this list. kingshammer just... isn't used outside of the main campaigns.)
now, looking at this list, there's something that's immediately obvious: you can't talk about kingshammer without talking about hardwon surefoot.
... and i say that, but i'm going to immediately do the opposite of that and talk about non-hardwon uses in c1 and c3, as well as all uses in c2. also, keep in mind that not every use 100% fits these categories, sometimes kingshammer is just the right song for the moment, and that's fine. let's get into it!
first: moradin. the man who created the hammer, so of course it would be used for him. i would place both of JV's scenes here (the first scene, though not featuring moradin directly, is tied to JV's afterlife), as well as the c3e34 moradin statue scene. (i also wouldn't be surprised if the JV scenes get kingshammer partially because of its link to jake like. on a meta level. but i digress)
second: once the godshammer is created in episode 93 (put a pin in that), kingshammer is no longer used for hardwon or the weapon itself. in the first campaign, the song shows up a few more times, all for beverly: when he's in the maze during the pestilence fight, and when bev sr. possesses balnor to speak to bev. these fall in line, to me, with the early uses of kingshammer for hardwon (post his death in ep54). being beyond the planes of the living, being trapped. hardwon sees lydia there and has to leave her behind for his friends; beverly sees erlin and does the same.
third: in eldermourne, kingshammer is largely used for rituals and betrayals, and is especially tied to the cycle of mistrust and betrayal that surrounds the children of the trickster; the final use being when henry goes to remove the crown from irina in the finale. it's seeded with the introduction of the guardians of the grove books in ep 2, and continues throughout. i'm not going to touch on every use here, some fit more obviously, but i want to call out a few things: 1. re; the use in e28, walder lachnamoore was specifically involved in the downfall of the summer and autumn children of the trickster after they had been manipulated by moxora/heredecia and 2. every other use comes in a pair (the use in 2 sets up bathilda's story in 28 / the two uses in 14 are both jabari getting controlled / 21 and 22 are the ghost dragon / 40 and 41 are both the crown)
fourth, i'm just going to quote emily on the c3e27 short rest: "kingshammer in [campaign 3] i'm trying to put under dragons and serpents, 'cause they're the weapons of this campaign." this covers the uses in eps 21, 27, 38, and 39. the use in 34 is for moradin, and the only other c3 use left is the one in episode 45. put a pin in that.
and with that we've covered all the other kingshammer uses. so, finally, let's talk about hardwon and kingshammer.
hardwon is definitely the strongest association the song has. especially in campaign 1, where it's almost exclusively used for hardwon and the kingshammer (the weapon, not the song) until the godshammer is created in episode 93.
i want to break these uses up real quick; first, let's look at the first handful of uses in campaign 1: 45, 54 (all of them), 55, 69. here, the song comes in as things get dire. the mountain collapses, and it looks like even as the kings save his friends hardwon is going to die. then, he dies and sees that lydia is trapped. he watches his father's last stand. kingshammer isn't a heroic theme for hardwon here, it's a theme he struggles against. it's not prompted by his actions, it's prompted by something happening to him. it's the weapon he wields, but in 69 it's even actively rejected him due to his vampiric nature.
and then, well, a few things happen. he's reborn, for one (literally). and then in episode 75, for the first time, hardwon prompts the song. he speaks up in the astral council, and says "you don't broker a deal with someone who calls herself a god." and his friends and allies stand with him.
after this, the uses in episodes 80-93 (keep that pin in episode 93) are pretty obviously tied to the weapon itself. the kingshammer. as it gets stronger, so does hardwon. the "looks like a dwarf to me" flashback is the first time he wields it. every other use concerns the hammers and the dwarven kings. the kingshammer isn't what makes hardwon a hero, not by a long shot. but the thing that's interesting to me is the turn here. it's no longer a song that happens to hardwon, not really. it's often a song prompted by hardwon's action, and it's more hopeful now. it represents the weapon and its legacy, which is a thing hardwon is coming to embrace.
now, about that pin. in episode 93, hardwon and macgannis talk about the godshammer. when macgannis offers hardwon his own hammer, hardwon says: "i don't necessarily have to be the guy, you know, if you wanna swing it--" and the song cuts off. they wrestle for the hammer, hardwon wins, and the godshammer is restored.
after this point, kingshammer is not used for hardwon again until campaign 3 episode 45, when he summons the spirit guardians at the 11th hour of the lord ultrus fight.
i just want to emphasize that; hardwon tells macgannis that he doesn't have to be the one who wields the kingshammer, and the song doesn't get used for him again until he accepts it back in campaign 3. when he says "hey boys, i think we have a friend to avenge," stands against ultrus, and his friends and allies stand with him. when he accepts himself as the wielder of the kingshammer again, and what that means to him (being a hero).
do you see-- i am talking directly to you, the single person who read this far-- do you see why the song use in this podcast is insane?? like! did murph know, back in the first campaign, that hardwon would return, be retired, and have given up the kingshammer? definitely not. does the use of kingshammer for hardwon mirror his arc in an insane way? yes.
so that's an overview of hardwon and kingshammer. however, we're not done. let's look at it all together: moradin, the kingshammer (the weapon), the uses for bev and jv in c1, betrayals and rituals in eldermourne, the serpents and dragons of c3, and hardwon's relationship to the hammer and the song.
kingshammer is a song for weapons. emily says it, when talking about campaign 3. and that is 100% a common theme here. but, going a bit further, it's also a song about the interaction of mortals and divine/otherworldly power.
often, it's mortals wielding that power. the kingshammer (the weapon) is a divine gift, given by moradin to the dwarven kings. a huge chunk of the uses, especially in c1, are directly tied to the weapon and hardwon's wielding of it. the spirit guardians is a huge example of this as well, as hardwon and his allies are touched by the kingshammer's magic and able to stand against ultrus. and also; bev sr uses the power of the shadowfell to bless bev's sword. and the serpents are oberon's weapon against the destruction of nature; glen uses the silver serpent for his own gains, gromdal does the same to the bronze. callie, meanwhile, doesn't use the serpents, not like glen or gromdal-- instead, kingshammer comes in when she attempts to soothe them. because ultimately, that's the way she wields their power. through connection.
sometimes, they're being pulled at by its influence instead. positively, or negatively. JV, when he's beyond death, meeting the gods. hardwon after his death, torn between lydia (who was put in this position by a god) and his friends. beverly, trapped by an avatar of thiala's magic, being guided by the ghost of erdan. the souls of irondeep being pulled from the prime material by lydia, the lord of shadowfell. callie, entering the helm where ultrus was trapped to save calder.
in eldermourne, this is less tangible. however; the betrayals and the children of the trickster. this cycle of betrayal is the biggest divine influence that remains in eldermourne. the blades are tied up in it, due to their ties to cerenysus and the betrayal by the blades who sided with moxora. walder is tied up in it, as i mentioned before, and he remains in his undead form because of the influence of moxora. jabari is influenced by the prophet-ed king into betraying his friends. the ghost dragon, an otherworldly being, is created by pain caused by mortal actions. and then the crown ritual, at the very end. when moxora, disguised, betrays them and shows irina the third mates "betraying" their ideals, out of context. and the last use, with henry, is as he steps up to end the cycle, one that he had been a part of before.
it's all mortals and the otherworldly, and the places they meet. it's hardwon and his mortal allies, standing together on the premise that you don't broker a deal with someone who says they're a god. and, at the same time, it's hardwon and his allies finding strength in the kingshammer's magic to stand against the avatar of one. it's the ways the two influence each other. an intervention by one onto the other. sometimes they draw strength from each other, other times they're opposed. it's a song that is dire, and also hopeful. oftentimes, which of those is the case is determined while the song is playing.
tl;dr: kingshammer has a lot of uses, but it's very consistently used to represent (divine) weapons, and the interactions between mortals and the divine/otherworldly. when applied to hardwon specifically, it has a lot to do with his journey as a hero and accepting that that's what he is.
(also, since i'm writing this before either happens: don't be surprised if it's used for the ice knife (the weapon) and/or the final serpent whenever we meet it. both of these have a high chance of getting kingshammer applied to them considering everything that's been set up about the ice knife and also, y'know, serpents.)
in conclusion: you can pay careful attention to the music in naddpod, but watch out. you might accidentally write 2.5 thousand words about a song. thank you for reading.
and go listen to kingshammer-- aside from all the meaning it also just kicks ass.
-
notes, disclaimers, etc:
for the purposes of this, if the song loops, it's part of the same use. if it is used later in the same episode, it's noted separately.
this is mentioned above, but not every use fits 100%. murph and emily very deliberately use music throughout the story to inform it, and also sometimes kingshammer is just the right song for a moment. both are true.
as a follow up to that, i'm not claiming that all of this was the specific intention. i'm just saying that when you look at kingshammer's uses as a song, there are some pretty strong themes, and it's fun to examine those.
i am not perfect. this is for fun. if i missed one, i'm sorry, feel free to point it out, and also i'll edit this post if that's the case
i would once again like to call out alli operationslipperypuppet for her help. she pointed out the divine connection first, and in general helped immensely. and, if naddpod music interests you, she's another person who often goes insane about it.
i am not above doing this for other songs, if you're interested let me know (few songs are as prolific as kingshammer, however)

"Psst– hey, Fi, wake up."
Fia rolls over, groaning as she is stirred back into the world of consciousness.
She definitely does not feel rested; she can imagine it's only been a few hours since she was nudged into sleeping by a well-meaning Henry. Mister Henry had really taken to his newfound captain position, and though Fia had rolled her eyes at him when he told her that she needed to put her book down and actually sleep, she makes a mental note to thank him later as she rubs her eyes blearily.
In the dim haze of her darkvision, she sees a pair of bright eyes staring down into her, framed by silver hair that nearly glows in the darkness. Even now, after all of this time, it takes her breath away. Fia cannot be upset that she's been prematurely awoken when this is the sight that greets her.
"Is it morning already?" Fia rubs at her eyes, carefully sitting up with a sleepy groan.
"No, no, not yet, but you have to see this." Irina does not seem at all remorseful for waking Fia, and she takes Fia's hand sooner than Fia can process the words, tugging her upwards.
Now that she's more alert, Fia can vaguely make out the sounds of Mister Henry snoring away across the room, and she thinks she can see an outline of someone that might be Mister Zirk, if only because of the shape of the blanket pile in the corner. Almost spitefully, she is glad that she was not the only one that Mister Henry had to corral into sleeping tonight.
Meanwhile, Irina hasn't even changed into sleeping clothes– she is still wearing her patchwork cloak draped around her, still wearing a set of Zirk's trousers and one of Fia's shirts because they haven't had the time or means to get her any of her own yet. They've only been on this trip for a few days, and Henry estimated it would be a few more before they reach the next town on the river for supplies– though, shamefully, Fia is glad that the trip would take this long, if it means Irina gets to wear her clothes for a little while longer.
So lost in her own thoughts, she barely protests when Irina guides her to her feet, and then all but drags her out of the sleeping quarters, up the stairs and onto the main deck of the ship. They had docked for the night so that they wouldn't have to sleep in shifts, which means its far easier for Fia to stay steady on her feet as she is led over to the starboard deck.
Finally, Irina sits down, and she pats the space next to her. Fia drops without a second thought.
"Now are you going to tell me what you brought me here for?" she asks amusedly, even as she glances down at the place where her hand is still intertwined with Irina's.
Irina waits a moment, fidgeting in place with what can only be excitement, and then she points up to the skies. "Look!"
Fia glances up.
Stars streak across the night sky. The legends say that these shooting stars are blessings of the Trickster waving down upon the mortal realm; sometimes, Batilda would bring Fia out to watch meteor showers, telling her about how they were a sign of good luck, that the humans of old times would make wishes upon the stars as they fell in hopes that the Trickster would answer their prayers and grant them their heart's desire.
Fia does not really believe in that story anymore, especially when she knows that the Trickster no longer walks the mortal plane and would not return. Still, she can understand Irina's delight.
"Isn't it beautiful?" Irina says in wonder, and when Fia glances at her, she is staring at the sky with the stars alit in her eyes, an awestruck smile on her face. "I have never gotten to see the shooting stars in person before, this is amazing."
"Beautiful, yeah," Fia agrees, but she is still staring at Irina.
Irina unclasps her cloak, fidgeting with it as she turns it sideways so that she can drape it over Fia's own shoulders. "Here, we can share," she says, and she finally looks away from the stars, catching Fia's gaze. Her cheeks flush a brilliant shade of pink, and she manages a small, sheepish smile. "It is very cold tonight."
"You know I am not bothered by the cold as easily as you," Fia tells her, but she uses the cloak as an excuse to lean in closer, tentatively curling an arm around Irina's shoulders so that they both fit under the fabric. "You know, in the old legends, people could wish on the stars when they fell across the sky."
"Yes, I've heard that legend as well!" Irina laughs, and she drops her head onto Fia's shoulder, curling into her side. "What are you wishing for, Fi?"
"I don't know what I would wish for," Fia admits, and she glances up at the stars as they fall across the night sky. "I already have everything I want right here."
Irina makes a weird noise against Fia's shoulder, but she doesn't say anything else– just clings tightly to Fia's hand, draped across her side, nestled in her cloak as the meteor shower continues.
When morning comes, Henry finds them both fast asleep on the starboard deck, cuddled together and peaceful.

About Zirk and surviving.
Remember when ha ha silly joke, truth serum make him babble about he's worried he would never love?
The "love" He knew most of his life, was conditional. Depending on his performance, and almost impossible to deserve- he had to be thankful he got it anyway. Of course he's worried he would never perform good enough to be loved, he never did.vbeing loved by his abuser was impossible.
Ha hah. Step on me. Funny joke.
But Of Course he's a masochist. He's a victim of abuse. And you know a very normal, very healthy -as long it's consensual- coping? Reclaim that status, make being a victim something you can enjoy. Something that you decide, rather than something done to you. If he chooses being hurt, he's not being abused.
He needs to over perform his actions. Be cheerful, and useful. He doesn't sleep because of course, he's always working, because his self worth is directly related to his usefulness and it is only cuantificable in results. In very explicit results which never will be enough, because the standars are so high. But they aren't high, someone keep rising them every time he reached.
Of course he shoot someone in the knee and jump to torture on his interrogation. He's full of anger that needs to be chewed and push back. Where, if not, would he be allowed to hurt. To take all that pain outside of himself. He can't do it in a sexualized way it wouldn't feel good. What he want is to hurt . To not be the victim. To be the attacker the abuser. To see someone in pain. But of course he doesn't want to see someone in pain. He's just in so much pain.
He finding a revivify, and going the extra mile, ask to every person and cuasi deity if it was right to use... because, results, reaching a goal isn't something he know. Even if he does, it's always less, it's always unsatisfactory, it's always not good enough and he should thank that Stella loves him anyway and takes his slack. He should try harder. He can't fully accept the found a godamn cure of all. Because he have never succeeded once. Or that's what he was trained to believe.
He wasn't raised, he was trained.
To always stay still and do, and never be thanked but do cheerfully, with a smile, before asked.
If he failed to do what he wasn't even told to do, he failed. Failing mean losing every inch of worth he had. He should know better.
And it is of course, blatant and obvious when we meet his abuser. When she calls him zirky, when everything she says seems so sweet, but at the end is at her own service. When every word she tells to him, at the end, is to make him feel small. Stella is not his mother, is his abuser. And if she makes him small, he won't rise his voice. He won't think. He won't be mister Zirk, just Zirky. And no matter what, it would be under performing. He should do better, for her. Because she's disappointed but she loves him anyway.
And she owns a fully loyal mindless puppet who does anything she needs and she doesn't have to respect. Respect is for those who aren't disappointments. But love him, of course. And he should praise her for love a disappointment.
He run away for years, and all his rightful anger, all his desilution. All of that, aren't recognized, aren't spoken. Are immediately shut, because that doesn't fit the dynamic she need. Ha ha silly boy. Let's continue where we left it. Where it works.
And he have a support group? It's ok. She will sweet talk them. They will be her excuses. Abusers need excuses, because if they think she's nice, then he would be irrational when reacting to her. But anyway, he doesn't need anyone.
Just needs her. Her unconditional love for a total failure who can't do things right.
But. Even if we didn't knew her. He's that. He's nervous. He's lonely. He's weird. He over explains and over perform because that's what's expected. He should do before asked. And do flawless. Know all the rules that weren't explained to him and do them perfectly.
He looks up to Henry, because no matter if he's also a weird pathetic losser, he validates Zirk. And that's enough to make a survivor hold with all his strenght. To look up.
He looks up to Fia and Henry because he doesn't believe he can look at someone he loves straight in the eyes. Because love is perform and fail and try harder and even when he isn't recognized he have to be thankful someone look down at him. Love is being inferior. Love is a weapon. But he have to love.
But they aren't like that.
So he choose die for them.
Because he would never perform enough for people like them. So good, so nice to him, he doesn't deserve that. He values less. all he can do is serve them, heal them, elevate them, and die for them, then he will do good. Not enough tho, he never does enough, he doesn't know how it feels doing enough. They are so cool, they can lift his slack. He just have to die.
He latched to them so fast. Making unbreakable promises. Needing them.
He's a deeply hurt person.
It's a unbreakable cycle. And Zirk will always have to learn that lesson. Because he was trained to always forget the result.
That his abuser don't love him.
That his abuser won't change. He can't love someone till change.
But he had the choice to move from victim to survivor.
He would never be free of that. And he will forget that lesson again. Because he can't be loved to change either.
But he can be loved. And his capacity for love is huge. He could choose to stop loving after how much it hurts. But he don't. And it's much better that way. Because he can't be loved to change, but he can be loved. Unconditional. How he haven't by his abuser. And it feels right. And he will cycle back to be servicial, but he will be thanked.
That makes the difference.
And in my next essay I'll over explain how much Fia, Henry, and Zirk love eachother. And how that despite being hurt they choose to keep loving. Spoilers: it's absurdly much.

Cerenysus:
We begin in the Autumn Ring, with Irina’s mind poisoned by the corruption on the ritual by her sister, Heradecia.
She summons living spells and tries to turn Fia into a book. Fia finally uses the time stop scroll and uses it to buff herself to hell. Zirk invisibly fires from behind Irina. Hank stays consistent. Heradecia teleports out.
We then find the Hexbuds, approaching the scorched grove where they can find her surrogate mother. They share an intense closed-loop hug, and turn to face her. Jabari stays back. Tarragon gets close. Corbeaux gets trapped by bony hands. They move around the space, taking damage for each other and attempting to stop her spells. 3 soldiers, capable of fighting like 300. The Hexblood Centurions.
Back in Autumn, Hank goes down because he’s the only one visible. Irina strikes while he’s down, taking a death save. And, as @theatricuddles sent me in an ask, Fia only turns to strike Irina after that moment.
After many rounds of battle, Irina is finally unconscious, thanks to a soft finish by Fia. She is held in Fia’s arms, as Zirk prepares to take off the crown. Fia says, "Foolish tenderness, but I'm going to cast Sanctuary on Irina". (thanks to @theatricuddles for the quote reminder). In the words of Murph, “we’re leaving it up to a Caldwell roll.” No one stays sitting in the two-dio. Zirk comes close. Makes a deal with a winter fairy. Fails again. Dies. At some point, Lou Wilson stands up from the table and puts his head against a closet.
Jabari is put under a banishment spell, and Tarragon and Corbeaux have a difficult time taking her on just the two of them. Jabari realizes he’s in a bad place when the toads are wet, and works hard to get himself out.
Henry is given a chance to get the crown. Fia tells him not to. She sees what protecting Irina has cost her and cannot let it continue. “You were my dream for so fucking long and I. I’m going to miss you so much.” Henry refuses. He takes the risk. He gets the crown. Zirk is revivified by Fia. Irina, back in control of herself, teleports them to her sister.
Hank gets some hits on Heradecia. Corbeaux nearly goes down, and is saved by Tarragon’s Death Ward. Jabari screamed “let’s kill her” upon his return, and is able to do just that, trisecting her.
The Hexbuds return to Outerborough. Jabari becomes Chancellor. The Hexbloods become his cabinet. They have a ritual to atone their mother.
The Third Mates assign Bukvar to sort the souls and make sure no one gets stuck waiting, as souls had been for years. Hank gets his divorce. Zirk works harder on the all-cure. They get their boat, and head to sea. Irina and Fia make it official.
One Big Bed:
The beginning is so soft and beautiful. Carrying Balnor back to the ship to rest after the Raise Dead. Budler framing Hardwon’s tasteful nude drawings and hanging them in the captain’s quarters. Lucanus putting the bubble back up around Gladeholm, and Moonshine sniffing out his magic. Moonshine making sure to help people because she doesn’t know how else to deal with everything. The apology tour by everyone who had attacked the Boobs while they were corrupted. Cobb’s apology.
Bev’s dad using Balnor as a speakerphone in the night to talk to Bev and bless his sword so he could smite with necrotic damage. Bev IV also taking time to heal Balnor while he was in there, making sure the resurrection aftermath was smoother for him. Calling Balnor Bev’s stepdad.
Moonshine and Meemaw heading back to the Crick. Seeing it can be beautiful even in the aftermath of a cataclysm. Finding the bullywugs in the GrandMaw Tree. “How long do half-elves live?” and the whole conversation that follows. “I guess, if I’m being honest, I just don’t know what it’s gonna be like to know Bahumia without Hardwon Surefoot. And there’s a part of me that doesn’t want to find out what that feels like.” Meemaw telling Moonshine to go catch nannerflies so she could zealous trance, allowing her to get a brief moment of childhood.
Jaina and Nerman trying to kidnap Hardwon for a party, and Hardwon resisting them too hard. McGannis naming him king for a day, and giving him a traditional dwarven send-off.
The Green Teens insisting on a jamboreen in a year. Deciding to go prank Denny. Failing horribly. The bullywug scuba suits as disguises. Nearly killing Denny by throwing him out a window.
Moonshine casting animal shapes on the whole party. All the dwarves wanting to be ducks. Jaina approaching Hardwon to make sure it was cool if she romanced Moonshine. The very suspicious way he said nothing was going on between them. “That’s one of the reasons why I fucking worship her”. Finally getting to have a moment himself with a suspiciously recognizable dwarf.
Luna finding Bev when she thought he was in trouble. Noting that Hardwon and Moonshine were “busy”. “Are they in danger?!?” “How old are you?”. Finding out where Thiala is headed.
Ending the night, all together again, in One Big Bed.
Moonshine waking up to cast spells on everyone. The send off they all tried to avoid. The smiles fading as soon as they were out of sight from the general population. Ready for war.

Nearly a full week late, but I have so many thoughts on Stella Vervain. Worst woman alive (affectionate). Has terrible ADHD. Extremely charming conwoman. Her son is probably the only person she could ever potentially love and she still lies to him on every occasion. Never knows when to quit. Truly one of the characters of all time.
OMG HIIII THANK YOU IFUCKING LOVE YOU
yessssssss yesss you get it you fucking get it. i literally have a list of stella headcanons/thoughts i'm workshopping and it says that she has never loved anyone more than she loves zirk. she loves him so much but it is built on a foundation so deeply fractured and fucked up that in some ways it doesn't even matter???
like i'm of two minds about it rn but part of me definitely thinks that like? she loved him as much and as she was able? as in. there's not an alternate universe where she could've loved him more. that was her best. she gave zirk her fucking all. a world where zirk was loved more by his mother would be one where she would no longer fundamentally be stella vervain. you get me? *gnashes my teeth in the corner* aaaughh
that was her son that she built with her hands and womb and cells. that was all the love she was capable of giving him. personally i headcanon that she changed the trajectory of her life for him. i don't think she regrets it. i think if pressed she would consider him the best thing to ever happen to her. i think she should not have been a mother. i think zirk is the only thing in her life that she could've ever possibly given her whole heart into doing and i think that maybe even stella doesn't realize that she still left a little out because she cannot board a train without knowing that she can make some kind of exit in case of a fiery crash. i love her so fucking much
she's such a fucking character thank you murph for creating something more beautiful than i was anticipating even after already becoming deeply in love with naddpod before i knew she existed. she's so fucked up and i love examining her under stark fluorescent lights and pointing out all the holes in the character she thinks she is
also i am So open to disagreement on my thoughts especially bc that means other people with thoughts on stella and i would LOVE to hear them and think very hard about them. please where are the stella intellectuals. enlighten me

@zirkkun is an absolute monster and let me tell you why
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I made this character to do one thing and then die as a villain
He was supposed to be a hateable, "i want you deceased" abusive pos who dies. end of story. hes no more.
I said one offhanded joke comment about an AU where he has to learn be a good boi and share a host with Spectre
And then i dropped a bit of his lore,,,,
and zirk goes "oh so hes a bottom"
AND I BROKE.
YOU CAN PINPOINT THE EXACT MOMENT I STARTED THINKING ABOUT THIS CHARACTER SERIOUSLY.
I STARTED SHIPPING THE SYMBIOTES AND IT WAS DECIDED THAT AU WOULD HAVE TO BE A THING
So then I'd start rambling when I'd get ideas, domestic fluff, story shifting to make redemption possible,
I blame Zirk because they did not stop me and encouraged this behavior and now this horrible awful monster gets a redemption and I adore him
It got to the point where i HUMANIZED HIM FOR SHITS N GIGGLES

Anyway thanks for reading this bullshit have an additional set of art for making it this far

Zirk ily, this was all in good fun 💖

Dice game 1-5 for Crown of Candy and Eldermourne! (or just 1 of them if you dont want to do both)
i haven’t seen crown of candy yet so i will just do eldermourne. (if you’re not done with eldermourne most of this is going to be about the end because i just finished so beware of spoilers!)
1. best nat 20:
it’s literally the last roll of the campaign but tarragon’s nat 20 insight check to finish the atonement ritual on the ashes of heredecia (with the help of her best friends/siblings). it’s just so absolutely, poetically perfect. a moment that is the epitome of emily axford’s playing style. 11/10
2. best nat 1:
that time zirk rolled a nat 1 on a death save was insane due to how caldwell’s luck turned around on him, but special shout out to any time fia rolled a nat 1 on a charisma check for a total of 0. just so fun.
3. roll you WISH was a nat 20:
ok so if you’ve listened to eldermourne (or been on my blog at any moment when i was listening to the finale) you know the absolute beauty that is the crown removal. now, you might think my answer here is that any of caldwell’s rolls should have been a nat 20. that’s not it. henry won that moment, and beat heradecia by 5 on that contested roll, but how fucking glorious would it have been if he’d rolled a nat 20? that’s my choice.
4. roll you WISH was a nat 1:
this question is so hard. i’ll go with run down johnny’s strength save when fia flew out the window of the wizard tower at him. i know he already failed it and that it was funny but an abject failure there would have been too good.
5. roll you wish had gone any other way:
if the beginning of the side flap assassination had been more seamless and that sleight of hand check had gone well instead of poorly that would have been awesome. i fucking love the hexbloods arc tho they did their best.
thanks for sending me questions and if anyone else wants to send these questions about an actual play, go for it!!

Big shout outs to @elk-scribe, Ely Robins and Zirk for making the dream work! 🎉

Finished Eldermourne. Final opinion:
Caldwell doesn't have right to make Zirk so relatable and so survivor.
I LOVEd it. I love Fia and Irina and how sweet and strong is Fia. And Henrry is such excellent, what a man, love a cursed man. Ill luck henry you're my favorite.
And I loved the story. The world is cold, the world doesn't love them, the gods have left. So they love, and they keep it warm.
But I need more. Adventures at the other side of the ocean, Murph proposed at the beginning about how there are monster and the unknow and I need to see more of it, what is there. The third mates are so special and so full of love. I need more adventures with them, speciallybecause nautical themes are absolutely my thing T0T
And no mention wemeet the endo friends, and the hexbuds for so little time. They need much more!!!
This is my favorite campaing.
Thanks.
Good night.
I'll be around here being insane about Zirk.

A showdown between finales!
Henry refuses.
Heart of the World:
The Boobs take the Stormborn to the Court of Gods. They write letters to their loved ones and put them in the contingency cubby.
After a bit of a difficult trek, they happen upon a wall where they can hear the wishes and prayers of the citizens of Bahumia. They offer a “We are here for you” in return, and are rejuvenated by the reaction to their presence.
Once they get close, they call their berserkers. Moonshine turns them into elephants, then summons pixies to make the elephants fly. The Titans of Bahumia fly into battle Thiala on elephants. (Murph is given the chance to leave Emily over any of that bullshit if he so pleases).
The battle with Thiala begins. She brings back Galad. Hardwon does 297 freaking damage in the first turn. 1,082 total by the end of the fight. Moonshine uses cantrips where they count. Bev takes on his own fungal form, and eventually casts a bonus action revivify on Hardwon. Balnor dukes it out with some angels.
They see what the mind of Thiala wants them to experience. I cannot do the flashbacks as much justice as @misslevel, so here are those comments on them from last round.
Thiala takes a second form. Uses Alanis and Ulfgar to harness their energy and make things worse. Tries to actually destroy Melora’s heart, holding the world together. Moonshine uses Handy Andy to steal Erlin, he’s freed from the gem, and able to help heal everyone. Bev, Balnor, and Hardwon keep swinging.
Nearing the end and fearing things will get so much worse (Balnor and Hardwon keep going down), Moonshine casts Shapechange and turns into a Gold Dragon. She eats Thiala.
The Titans of Bahumia return their divine heart fragments to Melora, as they were just borrowing it. They give Pelor his heart back, resurrecting him. They save the last one for the Dusk Mother, and give her rule over the one hells, renaming it The Ruby Dawn.
Old Alanis, the traveler, returns, and asks Balnor if he’s ready. He says tearful goodbyes and returns to his timeline, ready to destroy the hounds and save his village. “It’s okay, Balnor. I knew like all the most powerful things in this world, I was only borrowing you.”
We move forward in time. They start finishing off Akarot. Set up the ritual to destroy the Hellfire Crown. Hardwon visits his father in Kord’s Great Hall. Bev and Erlin get to be kids.
A year later, they return to Moonstone for the Jamboreen.
Moonshine reacquaints herself with the dragon she hatched and invites him to live with her at the Crick. Hardwon asks for the same offer, and it is given quickly. They read Balnor’s letter by the fire. Our story then ends where it began, in The Hungry Trout Tavern.
