okay. c1e100. the boobs enter the hall of prayers, and see all of the prayers of the people of bahumia manifested. prayers to them, from the people leaving the future and the world in their hands. people praying for their protection, and for them to be protected.
c3e56. in aryox's chamber, surrounded by his predictions, callie learns that her mother was also a diviner. that her mother's choices were made to drive her to the path she's on right now. lumi saying "you got here, didn't you?", and the carving. proof of her mother's choice to leave the world in callie's hands. her belief that callie could secure a better future.
the writing on the wall is the song that plays in both of these moments.

a while ago i saw a post by @sideblogdotjpeg about how the cycles in c3 seem a lot more personal/familial. and i kind of went insane in the tags at the time and i’ve been thinking about it a lot since because like…
you have the heroic cycles that the band of boobs parallel/break on this large scale. the idea of these broken trios of adventurers is there throughout the campaign, but they really start to engage with it towards the end— with the divine hearts, and thiala, and the wheel of suffering/wheel of joy idea. the thing hardwon says as he takes the divine heart, that no matter what anybody chooses from then on it’s with love in their hearts, i feel is very relevant to how they break the cycle. they love each other, and they choose over and over to hold each other tighter rather than be driven apart.
and on the other hand, you have duck team’s refusal of fate vs their family’s resignation to it. look at swag working with mothership, oliana’s contrition, and the stuff that is currently ongoing with gowan. you know— sol is a version of swag who fully rejected mothership and found his friends instead. callie refused to be a part of her family’s business, and her love for the wild and the serpents is giving the world a chance. calder, when he makes the deal with ultrus, telling callie and sol that he trusts them to save him. and now calder is refusing to sit back and let gowan handle things in the ice knife.
it's not that duck team aren't trying to save the world. they are. and it's not that the boobs didn't have a personal connection to the cycles they were breaking. they did. but it's like... well... how do i put this into words. right--
the song melora's boon plays when the boobs arrive at the heart of the world and speak to melora. when she talks to beverly about duty, shows him the places he faltered and how at the last second, he gets back up. (later, when they face thiala, bev doesn't go unconscious once. at one point, he's the only one standing.) for sol, this is the song that plays when he expresses his fear of going down again. when he admits to callie that he's scared of the day that she and calder are down and he's the one that needs to stand up alone. when callie says she's not afraid of that day, and sol finds himself empowered by the mushroom in his chest. the moment that sets up sol's long death monk ability, where he's able to refuse to go down and keep on fighting.
melora’s boon is also the song that plays for moonshine’s boon at the heart of the world. there are actually two songs in this scene, hardwon’s is different, and the transition back happens when melora says there’s a part of herself that moonshine hasn’t embraced. when she speaks to moonshine leading her people to a better future like an alpha wolf leading her pack. for callie, it plays when she tells hardwon and sol that she’s a liability and she needs to change— to embrace winter— in order to get calder back, even as they reassure her that she doesn’t. it also plays when callie asks the others to help her protect honeysuckle while he’s weakened. when they promise to lead honeysuckle home and free him from his connections to gromdal.
the writing on the wall plays when the boobs reach the court of gods. there's the wall of prayers there, and they hear the prayers of the people of bahumia, reaching out to them. prayers of protection-- for and by them. prayers that put the future of bahumia in their hands. for callie, this is the song that plays when she sees aryox's carving of her reaching the cave. when she realizes her mother acted the way she did because she could see what was coming in the future. when she realizes her mother was leaving the world in her hands.
the songs that the boobs first encounter at the end— when they’re basically demigods stepping up to face thiala— return for duck team in these personal moments. when sol finds the strength to refuse death. when callie talks about embracing winter, her mother’s season, something she eventually finds strength in, to save her friend. when callie asks the others to help honeysuckle, one of the serpents that she’s promised to protect partially due to the harm her family caused to the wild. and when callie realizes her mother saw the future and acted as she did because of it, pushing callie to walk the path she’s walking now.
anyway. this was a post about naddpod music.

prodigal sister coming in for swag saying goodbye and thanking sol. prodigal sister. which… when has prodigal sister been used before? well.
marabelle was turned against the crick, and the good part of her died at that tree. what was left was a hollow being of jealousy and spite. but in her last moments, she apologized and was forgiven by moonshine (speaking as jolene, her sister). she got to go home, return to the cycle. she got to say goodbye, and then rest.
deadeye turned his back on the crick, was trapped in the shadowfell by his deal, and became jaded and lost a lot of himself. and then he met moonshine. and in the end, he found his soul and his family again. in the end, as he died, he returned to the crick. he went home. he got to say goodbye, and then rest.
swag spent so long running from mothership. and being so scared that he let himself be a part of people’s schemes. and then he met sol, and sol made him feel like he could be a hero. sol made him feel like he could be good. and in his last moments, he goes home. he gets to say goodbye, and then—
there’s a glitch. and the purge. everything scrambles. everything goes wrong. the moment breaks. the song never gets to finish. it’s different. swag is still fighting. (and later, when sol sees him again; a fate refused. he’s still fighting.)
he might be mostly gone. who knows if they can save him. but the song never finished. he never got to rest. and i feel like that’s important.

a thing about naddpod music that makes me insane is like. in bahumia/ba2mia you have these patterns of history right. like... all the broken trios. the whole idea of the wheel of suffering / the wheel of joy. the same story is told again and again. and that means the betrayal and heartbreak but that means the connection and love too.
and then you have these songs that come back over and over. representing the same feelings and the same themes-- across different characters and times and places. the same story is told again, and the music connects it to the moments we've heard it told before.

I tried to go with the names they're most often known by across this arc and other campaigns but it changes. The big thing here is that the song at 1:07:22 is not called “A Humble Farmer” again, but when it’s used later in c1 it’s credited as “Wooded Wonders”, and then in c2/3 it’s “Fantastic & Fuddling”. However, both of those names are more consistently used for the songs I have them labeled as now. The song at 40:32 is called “Fantastic & Fuddling” throughout the Feywild arc, and the song at 1:45:23 is called “Wooded Wonders” in every campaign except HBS, where it’s “A Humble Farmer” Basically— “Fantastic & Fuddling” means the song at 40:32 and “Wooded Wonders” usually means the song at 1:45:23, but this isn’t always the case, and the song at 1:07:22 may be called either.)

also, to real quick twist the (ice) knife.
greener shades was used for that knighting ceremony scene, right? y'know, the balnor's letter song-- balnor saying his last soft goodbye. it's read after the fight, sure, but it's written before. balnor wrote it when he thought he might die helping to protect and save the world, to say goodbye to the people he loves.
later, when calder and gowan are alone and talking by the window, when gowan seems weird and before he leaves the note, the song that plays is balnor the brave. first heard in frostwind of campaign 1, when balnor offers to take the knife that killed gemma and the blame if he is caught.
he knew. he knew what he intended to do when he talked to calder. he says he's glad he got to make calder a ranger, while balnor the brave plays.
he was saying goodbye.

so here's the music in balnor backstory reveal.
alanis shows them balnor's village, his happy life with his wife and bobby. beverly's house. (a song of home, halflings, and of course bevelry)
balnor's village is attacked. balnor's bad dream. (balnor's dream from marabelle. there's a war coming and everyone has to fight, even old men who don't know how.)
balnor comes home to see the destruction. he picks up a shield and sword. he starts training. a fate refused. (hardwon kills galad. the title says it all. choosing your own path against fate.)
alanis returns, and balnor kneels to pledge himself to fight. the gunslinger's girl. (seeing the moment a character's path was set. murph says on the short rest this flashback reminded him of the ol' cobb and marabelle one.)
balnor remembers, all at once. balnor's bad dream. (he remembers. everyone has to fight.)
the boobs hug balnor. at the last minute, a first. (love against the darkness.)

sometimes i think i'm normal about naddpod music and then i remember the thing emily does where pairs of songs are variations on the same core melody but changed slightly by their context and tone. the widow and the revenant's fate. the blows of a friend not a foe and friend turned foe. oh melora and whisperwood. a friend for life and the smithy's hut. etc. and then i lose my mind.

welllll since you're offering to talk about naddpod music, would you mind talking a little about the uses and stuff of Meemaw's Burden? :3 nbd if not, but if it sparks your fancy, I'd love to hear your thoughts.
oh god mee maw's burden. anon. my dear friend. you have no idea how insane uses of this song make me.
okay. so lemme start by saying that mee maw's is only used in bahumia (c1/c3). i think about this choice fucking constantly. you'll discover why shortly.
i'm not going to list out every mee maw's burden use. i could. but i'm not going to. instead, i'm going to point at the fact that the song is called mee maw's burden. we first hear it when mee maw reveals that she's got crick rot to moonshine, and that she's been hiding it from everyone.
and like. jolene is a druid who will live for hundreds and hundreds of years. and lose so many people. she's the matriarch of the crick. she's carrying this so that others don't have to be burdened by it.
and... that's kind of what mee maw's burden is used for. the burden of the living. the burden of the parent. the ones who take things on so that others don't have to. it's... bev sr selling his soul to hell. beverly seeing erlin dead. telaine learning about melora, and breaking down at the end of the fight. "how long do half elves live". calder asking ultrus to make a deal with him.
it's-- mee maw's burden is... living. living when others don't. accepting heavy loads so that others can live on. knowing that you might not, and knowing that you're okay with that. being strong in the face of it, because you have to.
oh! that note i made. about why it not being used in c2 is insane to me. it's because in c2, there's the cycle. of rebirth and reincarnation. the relationship to death and lifespans is different. so... of course it's not used in c2. and of course it is used throughout c1/c3.
also! a fun thing i like to point out is that if you listen to mee maw's burden, and then listen to the song that plays as the boobs talk to melora at the heart of the world in 97 (9:44 in the ad free version), you will notice that the start of the melora song is a variant on mee maw's. enjoy that knowledge. yes, this is the "what an honor, what an injustice" song.
(and, because i'm insane. i did do that thing i said i wasn't gonna do)
campaign 1 uses: (25) mee maw reveals her crick rot (38) joris explains he helped akarot for the sake of the dwarphanage because no one cares about dwarphans (39) jaina and hardwon talk about how they failed gemma (51) the chosen kill everyone at the crick in a flashback (58) bev sr. admits to selling his soul (70) bev finds the field guide on how to defeat his dad (73) bev goes down at akarot's hand (80) bev's flashback to the execution in hell (87) erlin almost has to choose between healing bev and saving red (88) bev sees erlin dead and revivifies him (89) bev and erlin talk about pelor's death (90) bev and egwene talk about erlin being taken (92) moonshine sees pendergreens and paw paw after dying (96) both moonshine telling telaine about melora and telaine breaking down at the end of the fight (98) both pestilence killing balnor and bev defeating qwiksus (99) both telling lucanus about erdan and, of course, "how long do half-elves live"
campaign 3 uses: (7) callie tells the others about her past with stealing the egg and giving it to glen (11) beatrix tells duck team that she's the last of the ruby scale and her dragon has been killed (27) callie goes down in the king durretar fight / king durretar gets his breath weapon back / big bev also goes down / generally shit being real bad in that fight (29) do i need. do i need to tell you when in crown of dreams this is used? (it's calder making a deal with ultrus. it was never not going to be that.) (32) callie disobeys the worm and takes a bunch of damage in order to save hardwon (54) gowan learns about gregor, and tells calder that he can't help because he left and isn't a ranger. "please. we've already lost enough. do not put yourself in a position where i lose another brother."

Illuminate me on music!, I'm not good at it but I like hearing people talking things I don't know. So idk, start anywhere I wanna learn. Gimme music faces from emily's work
lol there's SO many places i could start. first, let me say that i get so in the weeds with this. you don't need to be me. however, murph and emily are really deliberate with their music placement so even if you don't go super deep, you can start to notice patterns, especially with the super frequently used songs.
when it comes to frequent songs, alli operationslipperypuppet also did a very helpful "hey how concerned should you be" breakdown of some common songs, which i'll link here. i would say if you want to start paying attention, some easy ones to check out and start listening for are the purge, unknown tome, kingshammer, valiant ol' cobb, mee maw's burden, a fate refused, the campaign themes, twinkling lights of galaderon, and a friend for life. all of these are available on spotify, with the exception of kingshammer, and have very consistent uses. (the bahumia theme isn't by emily, but is on spotify). if you want to hear kingshammer, a good use of it is around 50 minutes into c1e80, during hardwon's flashback (ad free, so you might have to go later for ads)
another thing to note is certain songs get very specific meanings when applied to given characters. mee maw's burden and unknown tome are used incredibly consistently throughout bev sr's hell arc. twinkling lights of galaderon and a bastard no more/hardwon takes the wheel (both names have been used) are used throughout hardwon's.
emily also tends to write a lot of location-based music. a lot of cities have their own themes and their own instrumentation. a great example of this is the tsunaire interlude from c3, which has a very unique sound. also for example, the crick tends to have a lot of similar instrumentation. if you listen through the crick album on spotify, you can start to hear it. there's a lot of strings/piano, drums, and a lot of notes are drawn out in a very specific way.
it's very consistent. there are also like 200+ songs written for this podcast at this point, and so knowing every one of them is insane. but if you start to be like "i've heard this song before, where did i hear it" chances are it's in a moment that connects thematically. i can go into a lot more detail about any of this, this kinda became a "hey here's how to start tracking naddpod music" post more than anything and not really about the themes/uses of songs, but! yeah!
some fun little bonus notes of songs that are only used a few times but that i am insane about the repetition of:
a song called "torn apart" is used when moonshine opens the rift to the feywild during the tarrasque fight, and also when the world is breaking apart after the thiala fight and the boobs heal it
"i just want to know you're taken care of" is the song that is played when moonshine tells paw paw to write up her will. it's also played when lydia tells her that she deserves to be heard by her friends and she should tell them about her plans in hell. it's also used in c3 when callie tells foster that she's sorry for not giving him love.
"a memory" is introduced in episode 100 as thiala shows everyone the failed past adventurers and the "wheel of sorrow". it has recently been used in c3 for both references to the boobs and to melora's adventuring party (melora/telaine/aryox)
there is a specific royalty free (i think) choral song that plays when gemma appears at the party, when gemma dies, when jaina almost kills hardwon, and then later when hardwon dies at scarlet montgomery's hands. do with this what you will.
this isn't about a reuse but the song that plays in ep 70 when moonshine and lucanus are talking is called "a miracle child" and i need more people to know that.
i am insane about "a glittering reunion" (from melora and telaine's in 97) on so many levels. telaine is the piano. melora is the strings. i need to lay down.

“young love” as a recurring song in eldermourne is going to kill me. do you ever think about how fia was defined by her massive love for two people who were absent for most of her life. and that’s emphasized by young love being used for fia’s relationship with batilda and irina. young love, the song for sadie bellwater’s tomb. where sewastian’s love for this girl who is gone is made clear. and it’s kind of childish, but it’s genuine. do you ever think about that.

[ID: A doodle of a person with glasses and short hair (me), crying with watery eyes. Music notes float in the air around them, and an arrow points to them labeled "Emily Axford + Brian Murphy's fault.]

i'm going to sue murph for emotional distress over the valiant ol' cobb being used when marabelle is defeated and the gunslinger's girl being used in the flashback to what happened the day she was tricked. jesus christ.

so a while ago i realized that melora's boon (the song from the heart of the world) and mee maw's burden had very similar chords in their openings, as well as general instrumentation. and i thought "woah that's a really cool musical parallel for emily to have set up!"
i was listening to some other instrumentals today, and as it turns out... it wasn't just those two songs.
[Audio Description: Clips of the openings of "A Sign From Melora", "Mee Maw's Burden", and "A Rare Appearance", followed by a clip from naddpod c1e97 that features the opening of "Melora's Boon" under Murph speaking as Melora and Emily speaking as Moonshine. The first three all have a similar progression of three piano chords spaced slightly apart. The last also does, but adds a fourth chord as well.]
like you have: a sign from melora, first used for moonshine's prayer to melora when she's unsure of what to do after learning about marabelle mee maw's burden, first used for mee maw revealing that she has crick rot, continually used to represent the burden of the living and things taken on to protect others a rare appearance first used for, well, melora's first appearance when she shows up to help heal the crick and then melora's boon first used in that clip-- at the heart of the world, when melora reveals she's given up her corporeal form and gives them their boons
yeah. these songs being musically connected is something that i can feel normal about.
