And the way that it fits it suuuuper well with the one I did before this is, quite frankly, insane, so you get a bogo free, because here's another one:
Steve knew that something had shifted for him in the boat on Lover's Lake. Because Eddie was....Eddie was a lot. A lot of good and odd and talent wrapped in a wet rat package, and if the glass against his neck had been the first alarm beckoning him to wake up, then him half-nakedly taking the plastic-wrapped light from Eddie before being dragged through yet another portal only to be rescued by Eddie in the Upside Down were the times when the snooze button fucking broke.
Look, Steve's love language was acts of service; he was gone from those first few hellacious days.
Thankfully, Eddie was the most active participant in the sending off, and off they went to Chicago where Eddie somehow managed to fall in with a band that, after a few years, blew up thanks to a right place right time kind of situation. They played locally, hitting up dives in and around the city as they built their discography and finally released their first album. A song off of it garnered radio play, and soon enough, there were calls for a tour.
Then the tour became a reality.
And Steve, eager and absolutely supportive of Eddie and his dreams, encouraged him.
"You're absolutely sure this is okay?"
Steve nodded, ignoring the way his stomach perpetually lived in basement of his body now. "You're my own Bilbo Baggins," he clung to a shed of humor to keep from breaking down about it, even with Eddie's face lit up from the reference. Steve cradled Eddie's face in his hands, pressed his forehead to Eddie's, whispering, "Just don't take over a year to come back to me."
"I can't do this, Steve. I can't be away from you like this." Eddie's arms squeezed his waist tight, trying to hold both of them together.
It was three months, touring as an opener from a band based out of Akron, and they'd be all over the country.
"You've always been there, and I don't-"
Steve shook his head, effectively cutting off Eddie's teary-eyed babbling. "You can, though. It's not forever, and who can say that they actually get to live out their dreams?"
Eddie sniffed, his big brown eyes absolutely massive with the yearning to come.
"See what it's like, baby. You know, while you can," he teased.
Eddie pinched his side with a watery, "You ass" that sounded a lot like, "I love you."
They wore the words out, left them as bruised and battered as their hearts, and they cried themselves to sleep more than just that first night apart.
But they, blessedly, had a long way to go with lots more I love yous and touches and tears, both good and bad. This is just a short paragraph in that chapter of their lives. And Eddie got to live out his dream.

When the reader has dyslexia and has trouble with spelling certain words or just forget how to spell the most simplest words ever gets insecure about their learning disability and then falls into a depressive episode (which is just them distancing themselves from other (Miles) for weeks)

Your brow furrowed. Is it tom—orrow? Or tom—morrow? This shouldn’t be this hard. It’s a word. A simple word. But despite your best efforts, you can’t get it. Defeated, you lean over and quietly tap your finger Miles’ arm. He knows about your dyslexia, and helps you whenever things get a little tough. He’s never made fun of you, and has never acted like he was annoyed with you asking him how to spell things. This is quite a common occurrence, but recently, nothing seems to click. It can go from constantly spelling a word wrong, to forgetting how to spell completely. Miles tells you all the time to not worry about it, but what does he know! He doesn’t ask his boyfriend how to spell tomorrow every night!
"Hm? Oh, what’s up?” He looks at you, finishing whatever word he was writing. Your finger drags over to the roadblock on your paper as you mumble a small “Is this right?” Miles takes a look at your paper for a moment before softly shaking his head. “Ah, no, there’s only one m,” your shoulders slump, “but—uh—everything else was right!” His hands wave a little bit, trying to cheer you up. His eyes dart over you, searching for a reaction. A breath escapes your lips as you quietly thank him.

A few weeks later, Miles is proofreading your science paper. He’s got a red pen, and is occasionally writing his thoughts or correcting something. That’s to be expected, essays are about trial and error so of course it’s not gonna be perfect on the first try. What you don’t expect, is to find the pages covered with spelling corrections. You can’t even keep up with how many there are on the first page. As you look through, all you can see is what you got wrong. “Replace the i with an e”, “Erosion has one r”, “Con-VEC-tion, there’s a c”, “Don’t forget the—“. You quietly stop reading and get up to grab your things. Your thoughts are cloudy, even as Miles pulls you into a warm embrace to hopefully soothe your anguish. It doesn’t help.
“I gotta go,” you push away, “see you tomorrow..” Your feet lazily carry you out of his dorm room. Miles doesn’t protest. He knows sometimes being practically slapped with how much your disability affects you, doesn’t do you well. So he lets you go, knowing he’d see you tomorrow.
He couldn’t be anymore wrong.

Well he wasn’t entirely wrong. He did see you, but you had no intention to see him. Every glance he threw your way went unnoticed. Every time he tried to speak, your headphones went in. He saw your smile wasn’t there, and your usual glow was gone. All of these things worried Miles but he didn’t know what to do. His thoughts were focused around you for the whole day, and how he could help. In the end, he decided it’d be best if he just texted you. Maybe you just didn’t want to speak in person because of yesterday.
Yeah, that’s it. He’ll text you, comfort you, come over to your dorm, and cuddle and comfort you some more. A foolproof plan! Now all that’s left is to get through today.

You don’t respond to the first text.
You don’t respond to the second text.
You don’t respond to the third text.
You don’t read any of them. And he knows your read receipts are on.
Miles is frantic now. Where could you have gone? He knows you’d tell him if you were gonna be busy, and he knows he’d catch any signs of you thinking about….No. He wouldn’t let himself think about it. Maybe you just needed some space. It’s normal for a relationship, especially one as new as this. He decided to give it a day or two.
You’d come around eventually.

You didn’t come around.
It had been two weeks and Miles still hasn’t heard from you. You were still coming to school, but you arrived before everyone else, and somehow managed to get out before everyone left. If he tried to call you, it’d cut off immediately. If he texted you, it would stay on delivered—read if he was lucky—and if he tried to get into your room, you wouldn’t open the door. Even if your roommate was there, he’d always say: “Oh, [name]? Yeah he’s not here. Sorry.” Then the door would shut. Every day Miles tried. And every day Miles failed.
He’d spend his nights racking his brain for any clue, and reason for you to go a-wall like this. It’s not like you. Whenever something’s troubling you, he’d be the first to hear about it. For the millionth time, he tries to call your phone. And for the millionth time, you pick up. Just like he thought—
Wait what.
Miles sits up and hears quiet sobs on the other end. “H-hello? [Name]? Please answer me.” After a quiet moment you speak up. “Mhm?” Your voice is weak on the other end, but nonetheless, it’s your voice. Miles jumps out of his bed, already putting on a jacket and shoes. “Are you still in the dorms? Where are you?” He opens the window, waving to Ganke who’s woken up. “Please, love.”
“The park. The one we always go to.” Your voice is hoarse and hiccups are breaking through. “Alright. I’ll be there. Wait for me, okay?” He hops out the window and swings through the streets, keeping you on the line. At this point in time, Miles is a great swinger and has almost perfected the art. But tonight, he’s going faster than he’s ever gone before. Faster than his common sense would normally let him go. Even when making an escape, he’s careful to watch his speed just in case. Not tonight though. This is you. He’d risk everything for you.
In a matter of minutes, he’s at the park already looking for you. “[Name]? I’m here,” his eyes dart in every direction, “where exactly are you?” He jogs over to a nearby tree, catching a glimpse of a light from a phone screen. You’re silent for a few more moments as you can tell he’s the cause of those footsteps coming in your direction. So you just keep scrolling on your phone. Miles catches up to you, and before a word can be said, he’s fallen to the ground and pulled you into a hug. Possibly the tightest he’s ever hugged someone. And that’s the crack that sends the dam crumbling.
You break down and sob into his shoulder, clawing the fabric at his sides. The world no longer exists and it’s just you and him. You and the person who cares about you. You and the person who came for you. Miles’ grip tightens around your shoulders as stray tears escape his own eyes. “What happened? Why were you gone for so long?” He asks.
“I was tired of being stupid,” you manage to get out, “tired of being a burden.”
“A burden?!” Miles pulls away and cups your cheeks. “Now who told you that?”
“Don’t you understand, Miles?!” You shout. “I’m probably the dumbest person on this planet!!” He starts to object but you cut him off, “And don’t give me that “Oh but it makes you, you!” Bullshit.” You stand up and begin to pace around. “You can’t possibly wanna deal with me!” Your breath quickens and tears are still falling. “Couldn’t-couldn’t possibly wanna actually spend your life dealing with some who can’t spell for shit. Who’s always asking if he spelled—fucking i don’t know—Wednesday right.” You finally stop and stand in one place, hugging yourself tight. “I fucking hate it.”
Miles makes his way to you and pulls you into another hug. He doesn’t try to convince you otherwise because this isn’t the time. It’s time for you to let it all out, and for him to listen for as long as you need him to. He’s got you back and that’s all he needed. And right now you don’t know, but you needed him just as much if not more.
You two stay in the park and talk for what feels like hours. After two weeks of radio silence you’ve got a lot to say, and best believe your boyfriend is gonna take note of all of it.

If there's anything you can say about Robin's controlled infection too, I'd love to know more. I was worried that she would end up losing her humanity to save Nancy and Max. I just want them all happy >.>

hehe, but yeah, it's a wild journey. the au is actually technically already more or less complete with the story line, both the og and the ciquest version, i just...haven't written it completely HASFUIAHSF
but, that's an eventually too, because my love for this au will always be strong, no matter the hyperfixation i have rn
about robin's controlled infection! well, in mine and @/lumaxrambling's minds, controlled infection au and conquest au are intertwined (because ronance ofc yesyes), hence why its named ciquest au. why am i explaining this little bit?
it's because the reason why robin can control her infection is because of nancy :D
in the ciquest au, pestilence (max) suggests to One/Vecna to get nancy to their side, because she feels that it would really help them out (but also because nancy was also put into a trance by vec, so it goes full circle, doesn't it?)
One/Vecna agrees, but tasks pestilence to hit nancy with her poison infection arrows first to test her
and so the chimes go do that...except robin intervenes and takes it for her
however, instead of becoming infected and losing herself, robin's desire to protect nancy boosted her during her fight against the infection, leading her to take it as her own
in the og au, there is no suggestion to One/Vec, but there is still a moment where someone gets hit by an arrow. i will say now that ogfc!robin...does not have the same luxury as ci!robin
but anyway, yes, back to ciquest au, robin is able to control her infection, which then technically gives her an advantage as she has "taken" some of pestilence's powers to use against the chimes and Vec
ofc, this au is called ciquest for a reason, so seeing how robin is possibly becoming more of a threat, Vec sends the chimes to forcefully take nancy to level the playing field
hence her becoming conquest :>
(oh robin definitely won't blame herself for this, not at all :') much angst hehe)
as for robin almost losing her humanity...well, she gets close for quite a few times
but yeah :)

Update on Esther Demian (Western Metropolitan) and Mehdi Sayed (South-Eastern Metropolitan)
Two readers have been able to shed light on mystery candidates Esther Demian and Mehdi Sayed. I couldn't find anything about them when I wrote my entry on independents standing for the Legislative Council, nor had a couple of other election reviewers. But here we go!
Both Demian and Sayed are standing as ungrouped independents—i.e. they will appear in the furthest right-hand column on the ballot in their respective regions and you can only vote for them if you vote below the line. I will review them in turn.
Esther Demian (ungrouped independent, Western Metropolitan)
I'd like to extend a big thank you to the reader who messaged to let me know Esther Demian has been campaigning on Facebook. She has been campaigning through her personal profile and, in brief, this is some really cooked stuff. In fact, it's not immediately clear to me why she is not running for one of the cooker parties as she is espousing their rhetoric and even reposts a UAP video approvingly.
Your initial impression, based on the video currently at the top of the page, might be that she is mainly focused on small business, lower land taxes, and some sort of fear that property owners are losing their rights and lands. Right-wing small government stuff yeah? But keep scrolling and it's clear how extreme her views are.
Demian is clearly trying to hook into the organisational networks of cookers that exist on Facebook. She peddles a range of conspiracy theories, some of which are more subtle than others. She urges voters to vote in pen—this refers to a conspiracist paranoia about votes in pencil being secretively changed (the VEC explains that they use pencils because they are more reliable). She shares material with disinformation about vaccines. She shares material about the "Great Reset" conspiracy theory. So on and so forth. Keep clear of this one!
My recommendation: Give Esther Demian a weak or no preference.
Mehdi Sayed (ungrouped independent, South Eastern Metropolitan)
Another big thank you to a second reader, who was leafletted by Mehdi Sayed and sent me a photo of his How To Vote card (see bottom of the entry). It's very enlightening. He also has a Facebook profile.
Now, Sayed is interesting, because the impression you would gain from the Facebook profile is that he's a social activist interested in refugee rights. His HTV likewise lists support for refugees as a priority, as well as acting on climate change, acting on cost of living issues, and helping low-income families and small businesses. It seems like harmless stuff. I might have given him a lukewarm favourable review...
But! There's a crucial detail on the HTV.
Mehdi Sayed recommends his voters send their preferences to, in order, Lyndon Samuel (4th candidate, Liberals); Morgan Jonas (lead candidate, Freedom Party); Manju Hanumantharayappa (2nd candidate, Liberals); Matt Babet (UAP). Oh dear. Oh. Dear.
Some serious red flags, those. Morgan Jonas is one of the most prominent covid cookers, notorious for leading anti-lockdown, anti-mandate, and anti-vax protests and being chummy with people who espouse other extreme ideologies. Matt Babet is the twin brother of federal senator Ralph Babet and they've been at the forefront of the UAP being a grievance machine for angry people without any coherent policy to speak of. So, in light of this, my politest interpretation is that Sayed has seriously flawed judgement. You can probably infer my less polite interpretations.
My recommendation: Give Mehdi Sayed a weak or no preference.

Hmmm... Might as well do them all. Hope you don't mind. 😂
Phoenix: When I was thinking back in the beginnings about the Bad Batch in a Modern setting, I started writing out a lady character for the story. I think it started out as a Y/N character but pretty quickly I was like, "Hold up, I could have a whole OC thing going on here!" So Phoenix was born. I knew her name almost right off the bat. As for her backstory, that took a little bit longer but eventually I got there. :)
Georgia: Phoenix needed a friend. :) A perky friend. Hence, we have Georgia.
Twilight: I think I said this in another ask but my whole inspiration for the Mariden Station Chronicles was based on the question, "The Rishi Moon Outpost but with a kid mixed in." And Twilight was born.
Rien: At first Rien was a nameless red-headed young man. His character turned into an adventurous wanderer, and then I realized how much potential there was if he was a Jedi. And so he became a Jedi padawan. Poor boy's probably like "Make up your mind, already!!"
Dezmin Varktov: I haven't talked about him a lot in "public" yet, but you know who I'm talking about, Vamp. I wanted a pirate. The story needed a pirate. And so I have a pirate. :)
Aja: I started thinking to myself, "Hey, all my characters thus far are humans!" Not a bad thing, mind you, but humans aren't the only species out there in the Star Wars universe. A Pantoran was the first thing I thought of, and from there her character developed into a former GAR nat-born medic who is now on Dezmin's crew. More about her and Dezmin will come in later in the story.
As for the clones, I have three different ways that I come up with them.
1): A fun, random, clone-like name pops into my head, usually prompted by something I heard someone say, or by every day objects/situations, and most of the time, the name will conjure up a basic personality, an overall aesthetic, for that clone, and from there I just chisel out the defining features: his interests, his relationships, his appearance, and his complete personality. This is how Rocker, Claptrap, Visor, and Vec were made.
2): I think up a clone (his overall basic, defining features) and derive his name from his personality. This is where Smug and Trip came from.
3): The third way I think up clones is by thinking of a position I want to fill (strong one, smart one, leader, etc.) and create a clone to fill it, thinking up his personality and his name as a secondary priority. Dagger, Scrap, and Sarge: all prime examples.

I wanna tell you a huuuge THANK YOU for being absolutely amazing and supportive and comforting during this crazy World Cup. we’ve really been through a lot, huh? creating this blog has been one of the best things I’ve done and all the people I’ve met and talked to were wonderful and special in their own way.
thanks for putting up with my screaming mostly about Croatian team and sending us love and good vibes from all around the world. I’m so grateful to have shared this awesome experience with you and to have gotten so many nice comments and asks. I love you all and I hope club football doesn’t disappoint you and that we’ll assemble again soon to freak out over sports.

Noether’s Theorem  - A Quick Explanation

Noether's Theorem is super rad. The theorem is, colloquially,
>> Continuous symmetries imply conserved quantities. <<
Let’s dig into the origin of this powerful theorem and list a couple of examples. I’ll restrict my attention to a subclass of symmetries for the sake of space, buuuut if there’s interest, I could do a more general post in the future. (Heads up: because this post is written using LaTeX, it's probably easiest to read directly from my blog.)
• Defining the Lingo: A Lagrangian is a function that (after some manipulation) yields the physical evolution of a system. A generic Lagrangian $L$ can be a real continuous function of...
$m$ real parameters $t_j$, where $j=1,\cdots,m$, and
$n$ pairs of paths, which we label $q_i(t_1,\cdots,t_m)$ and $\tilde{q}_i(t_1,\cdots,t_m)$, where $i=1,\cdots,n$ and a path means “a real continuous function of the aforementioned parameters”
In this exceedingly general case, we might write
$$L = L(q_1,\cdots,q_n,\tilde{q}_1,\cdots,\tilde{q}_n,t_1,\cdots, t_m)$$
However, for the sake of clarity, let's restrict ourselves to one parameter $t$ and one function pair $(q,\tilde{q})$. Let's further suppose $L$ depends on its parameter only through the function pair, aka let us write $L = L(q,\tilde{q})$ (as opposed to $L = L(q,\tilde{q},t)$). This is the case relevant to a classical particle confined to a friction-free line, wherein $q(t)$ is the particle’s position along the line and $t$ records the time.
While $L$ is constructed to be a function of position $q(t)$ and some other path $\tilde{q}(t)$, we always intend to eventually set $\tilde{q}(t)$ equal to the velocity $\dot{q}\equiv dq/dt$. Furthermore, of the many combinations $(q(t),\tilde{q}(t))$ equaling $(q(t),\dot{q}(t))$, nature chooses the pair satisfying the Euler-Lagrange equation:
$$\left.\frac{\partial L}{\partial q} \right|_{\tilde{q} = \dot{q}} = \frac{dp}{dt}$$
where
$$p\equiv \left. \frac{\partial L}{\partial \tilde{q}}\right|_{\tilde{q} = \dot{q}}$$
The differential equation we get from plugging a specific $L$ into the Euler-Lagrange equation is called the equation of motion of the system, and $p$ is the momentum conjugate to $q$.
• The Main Idea: No matter the specific form of $L$, we can plot it over $(q,\tilde{q})$ space. (To be clear: this is the space of values to which the paths $q(t)$ and $\tilde{q}(t)$ are mapping, so essentially the real plane.) The resulting plot will look something like the left plot in the following image:

I've made a point to highlight contours of constant $L$ in orange. The right plot projects those contours onto the $(q,\tilde{q})$ plane. These contours lie at the heart of Noether's Theorem: imagine we slide the coordinates $(q,\tilde{q})$ around in the plane so that each point moves continuously along a contour of constant $L$. Usually the shape of $L$ is changed when we distort the $(q,\tilde{q})$ plane below it, but by forcing each $(q,\tilde{q})$ to flow along a contour, $L$ is unaffected! A continuous transformation that leaves $L$ unchanged is called a continuous symmetry of the Lagrangian.
We can make this whole business quantitative by parameterizing the sliding operation with a real variable $\alpha$. Let's choose $\alpha$ so that $\alpha=0$ corresponds our initial unchanged $(q,\tilde{q})$ plane. Then the statement “$\alpha$ parameterizes contours of constant $L$” is mathematically expressible as

which equals, by the chain rule of differentiation,

Now, this equation holds true across all of $(q,\tilde{q})$ space, including along the physical path solving the equations of motion. For that path, we may use the Euler-Lagrange equation, the definition of conjugate momentum $p\equiv \partial L/\partial\tilde{q}$, and the fact that $\partial \dot{q}/\partial \alpha = d/dt(\partial q/\partial \alpha)$ to write,
$$\frac{dp}{dt} \hspace{3 pt} \frac{\partial q}{\partial\alpha} + p \hspace{3 pt} \frac{d}{dt}\left[\frac{\partial q}{\partial \alpha}\right] = 0$$
aka, according to the product rule of differentiation,
$$ \frac{d}{dt}\left[p \hspace{3 pt} \frac{\partial q}{\partial \alpha}\right] =0 $$
In other words, the value of $p \hspace{3 pt} (\partial q/\partial \alpha)$ doesn’t change in time--it’s a conserved quantity! This is a special case of Noether's Theorem.
If we repeat the above calculation with $n$ paths $q_i(t)$, we instead derive
$$\text{*}\hspace{25 pt}\frac{d}{dt}\left[\vec{p}\cdot \frac{d\vec{q}}{d\alpha}\right] =0 \hspace{25 pt}\text{*}$$
where $\vec{q} \equiv (q_1,\cdots,q_n)$ and $\vec{p} \equiv (p_1,\cdots, p_n)$, and we find that

This powerful statement allows us to identify conserved quantities from symmetries alone. For example...

where $L_z$ is the angular momentum in the $z$-direction. Rotational invariance necessarily implies angular momentum conservation.
• Closing Comment: Note how we didn't need an explicit form for $L$ to make these arguments. Noether's Theorem tells us that conserved quantities naturally emerge not as coincidences, but from the presence of symmetries. Consequently, if I experimentally observe a conserved quantity (like electric charge, or color charge, or even things like lepton number) then I can make my model consistent with that observation by encoding certain symmetries into my Lagrangian. In this way, Noether’s Theorem is impressive in both its elegance and practical power.

Although I didn't have space to discuss it here, Noether's Theorem also extends to Lagrangians with explicit parameter dependence, systems with multiple evolution parameters (like QFT), instances where $(q,\tilde{q})$ transformations change $L$ by a total derivative, and more. One extension allows us to demonstrate how time translation invariance yields energy conservation.

Classical E&M IV: Generic Electrostatic Forces
Our goal today is to determine the force between two generic charge configurations. Last week we handled a generic source charge configuration by dissolving it into tiny point-like pieces, then adding up the contributions due to every piece. We can handle the target charge configuration identically.
This post is a stepping stone on our path to completing electrostatics. We’re getting there!
I. The Electrostatic Force between Volume Charge Densities
It helps that we already know the force a target point charge $q$ at $\vec{r}$ experiences due to an entire source charge configuration $CC^\prime$. Namely,
where the electric field due to $CC^\prime$ is the appropriate superposition of volume, surface, line, and point charges, each providing an electric field according to the following equations:
Suppose (for the sake of having a concrete example) we’re interested in the electric force between two volume charge configurations: $\rho^\prime$ occupying a volume $V^\prime$, and $\rho$ occupying a volume $V$. The electric field at $\vec{r}$ due to $\rho^\prime$ is given by $\vec{E}_{\rho^\prime}(\vec{r})$ above.
We dissolve $\rho$ into tiny point-like pieces, each possessing an infinitesimal amount of charge described by its volume charge density:
Because each $dq$ can only receive infinitesimal numbers of photons, the force on any $dq$ is also infinitesimal. We write this infinitesimal force as,
or, more explicitly,
Note that $\vec{r}$ labels which point-like piece of $V$ we’re talking about--it’s a variable that indexes our disintegration of the target $\rho$. Similarly, $\vec{r}^{\text{ }\prime}$ indexes the disintegration of the source $\rho^\prime$. As a result, $dq(\vec{r})$ depends only on $\vec{r}$ and is constant with respect to the $\vec{r}^{\text{ }\prime}$ integration. In other words, the disintegration of $\rho$ is independent of the disintegration of $\rho^\prime$.
We use the target $\rho$ to rewrite the force experienced by $dq(\vec{r})$ in terms of $d\tau$:
Because the infinitesimal $d\tau$ is independent of $\vec{r}^{\text{ }\prime}$ in the same way that $dq(\vec{r})$ was independent of $\vec{r}^{\text{ }\prime}$, we may immediately integrate the $\vec{r}$-dependent function in square brackets with respect to $d\tau$.
Consequently, the electric force $\vec{F}_{\rho^\prime\rightarrow\rho}$ that a target $\rho$ experiences due to a source $\rho^\prime$ is,
Note that this quantity has no explicit positional dependence. All positions have been integrated away! Once we’ve specified our charge distributions, the electric force between them is locked in. This might seem contradictory to our expression for the force experienced by a point charge, which has an $\vec{r}$-dependence; however, specifying a point charge configuration technically requires fixing the point charge's position $\vec{r}$ (in the same way we'd specify the location and orientation of a volume charge), so there is no contradiction.
We also note that $\vec{F}_{\rho^\prime\rightarrow\rho}$ possesses a nice symmetry between $\rho$ and $\rho^\prime$. In fact, swapping primed and unprimed quantities yields the same result, but with a minus sign: $\vec{F}_{\rho^\prime\rightarrow\rho} = -\vec{F}_{\rho\rightarrow\rho^\prime}$. Even charge configurations obey Newton's Third Law. This implies that the net force $\rho$ experiences due to itself is zero: $\vec{F}_{\rho\rightarrow\rho} = -\vec{F}_{\rho\rightarrow\rho} = \vec{0}$
II. The Electrostatic Force between Generic Charge Configurations
This procedure is readily generalizable. Given a generic source $CC^\prime$, the electric forces due to $CC^\prime$ on a volume charge $\rho$ on $V$, surface charge $\sigma$ on $S$, line charge $\lambda$ on $C$, and point charge $q$ at $\vec{r}$ are, respectively,
Finally, we write the force between generic charge configurations. If a charge configuration $CC$ is composed of point charges $q_{i_0}$ at $\vec{r}_{i_0}$, line charges $\lambda_{i_1}$ on curves $C_{i_1}$, surface charges $\sigma_{i_2}$ on surfaces $S_{i_2}$, and volume charges $\rho_{i_3}$ on volume charges $V_{i_3}$, then superposition yields the force that a target charge configuration $CC$ experiences due a source charge configuration $CC^\prime$:
This machinery enables us to calculate the force between any pair of charge configurations. This has important implications when combined with our arbitrary division between sources and targets. While we like to think of photons from a source being absorbed by a target, a source is simultaneously also absorbing its own photons. Similarly, the target (despite its nomenclature) is throwing photons at the source and itself. All of these exchanges generate forces.
To be explicit: we can imagine taking a volume charge density $\rho$ on $V$ and breaking it into two pieces, $V_1$ and $V_2$. The $V_1$ piece will have a volume charge density $\rho_1$ and the $V_2$ piece will have a density $\rho_2$.
Because we can regard $\rho_1$ as a source and $\rho_2$ as a target (or vice-versa), these two pieces will be exerting forces on one-another and thereby wanting to move about. To ensure the charge configuration remains static (as to stay in the realm of electrostatics), we must apply additional external forces to cancel out all of the electrostatic forces.
This perhaps illustrates how limited the realm of electrostatics truly is: nature desires a description more expansive than electrostatics, even according to the rules of electrostatics alone! Our days in electrostatics are inherently numbered.
Next week, we’ll describe special idealized charge configurations called multipoles. Soon we’ll be discussing electrostatics in materials, several Maxwell equations, and the speed of light that will provide us the bridge away from electrostatics once and for all.
