Happy Tech Tuesday!
This is the first piece of post-Far Past the Ring Tech and Sjael art that I commissioned back in May. Done, once again, by the incomparable @matthewyeetz on Twitter.
Tech’s rocking his sweet Transport Union uniform, Sjael’s in her work dress with her beloved vanilla orchid, and most importantly, they look like they stepped out of a Disney movie.
Oh, and Tech isn’t shorter: Sjael is 6’4, right at Tech’s height. Shes a Belter and taller than humans born on planets with natural gravity.
Gotta throw the tags for those who haven’t seen it yet: @eyecandyeoz @sued134 @rocicrew @techs-stitches @ilikemymendarkandfictional @anxiouspineapple99 @amalthiaph @freesia-writes @littlefeatherr @vivaislenska @vimse @blitzink @marymunchkiin @merkitty49 @megmca

Happy Tech Tuesday!
If you have the chance to get a piece from @matthewyeetz on Twitter, pinch yourself, because you are a very lucky person!
He was kind enough to make this beautiful piece of Sjael and Tech.
A thing that makes me absolutely squeal is the simple fact that the artist NAILED Sjael's coloring! She absolutely looks like she'd be related to Cara Gee (Camina Drummer in 'The Expanse').
Of course they're wearing the same vacsuits, Beltalowda gonna Beltalowda, ke?
And the realistic coloring and shading of the armor UGGGGGGH.
If ya haven't seen it yet, tagging ya now: @eyecandyeoz @marymunchkiin @littlefeatherr @eclec-tech @eelfuneral @thecoffeelorian @wrenkenstein @techs-stitches @freesia-writes @sued134 @commander-sunshine @verygoateebeard @blitzink @merkitty49

Just read a whole series of Tumblr posts hating and making fun of Tech’s looks, with a focus on his hairline.
If you’re of the XY chromosome variety, you know you’ve got a 3 in 4 chance of losing your hair, right?
Y’all need to grow up. Literally.
PS - Enjoy this reposted art of him with darker skin, receding hair, and getting loved on by a cute brunette who likes his hairline.
PPS- Making fun of his neurodiversity was the icing on the shit cake. Your mothers must be proud.

He covered his mouth, as he felt slender arms reach around him.
“Teki, may I hold you?”
“Please,” he said softly.
Tech, 'Wanted and Needed, Part 6', Far Past the Ring
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Simple, quick drawing of Tech and Sjael in one of the softer scenes from Far Past the Ring. Updated version of the one I drew last summer, below.
There aren't enough examples of couples of the same height. I am determined to change that!
I'm also determined to get back into watercolors, even if they look at little sloppy at first.

“And the fear that you might leave me
I thought of tomorrow
And I wished it was Monday evening
But I knew that you
With your heart beating and your eyes shining
Would be dreaming of me
Lying with you on a Tuesday morning.”
- The Pogues
——————————————
Wanted to branch away from these two on V-Day, but still wanted to craft a quick. sweet picture of Sjael and Tech kissing. Never did one before. Plus prairie grass is so soothing to draw.
Also, there’s not enough art of couples who are the exact same height—especially if the woman is a 6-foot-something giantess like Dr Drummer (or myself!).
Need some writing of these two talking and getting it on? Click on the links below!

Why we never were encouraged to seek out other humans and love them, touch them, know them, feel them like this, I would never understand. A tragedy for so many clones, for this is amazing.

Watching her was so delightful, with how expressive her face was, how animated her hands were, as she spoke her native tongue into his helmet.
I never need to guess what she is feeling or thinking, he thought, she simply is herself.
And I’m not a clone to her, not a soldier, not property of the Republic or Empire. I’m me. Just me.
And that is wonderful.

OC Sunday, and it’s just a quick doodle of one of my favorite chapters, with Tech and Sjael.
I don’t know why I drew Tech looking at Sjael like a dog that’s just been rescued, lol.

Happy Tech Tuesday!
Here’s a quick doodle of our engineering prince of the HMS Search Warrent Marauder, with his daughter and fling-turned-wife in Far Past the Ring.
I should not be so maudlin, but around this time last year, my toddler was in the hospital with RSV. My husband and I were with her in shifts. It was terrifying, but having a partner who is both strong and loving absolutely made a difference.
While not a pleasant experience, the memory of us working as a team to keep our family together (as we had another daughter at home, scared for her sister), gives me such a good feeling.
Marry someone who is your team mate.

Here’s to all of us whose hearts were shattered by that line from ‘Plan 99’.
But here’s how some psychologists recommend dealing with tragic events: putting your own creative spin on them.
I’ve found, for me, is taking words and quotes that hurt or upset me, and rewriting them in my own way. Especially if the meaning can be changed.*
In this case, “When have we ever followed orders?” isn’t uttered by Tech, resigned but heroic.
It’s said by Sjael Drummer near the end of Far Past the Ring. It’s now defiant, independent, and hawking a loogie right in the face of adversity.
It’s a tragic line from Star Wars that’s now a shout of fortitude from The Expanse.
Writing it out made it seem like something Klaes Ashford would say, or Camina Drummer, right before knocking someone out an airlock. 100% ungovernable Beltalowda.
Now? I smile every time I see it. Tenye wah chesh gut!
Hell, Camina Drummer says a version of it in the new Telltale game: "The Inners may control everything, but they cannot control the Belt."
Take something that makes you sad, and make it yours.
And yes, Sjael, like most Belters in the fic, has her new helmet designed to look like Tech’s. He’s become an accidental fashion icon!
Belters have also started painting their helmets like the clones. In Sjael’s case, she has Ojibwe style greenery that hints at her work with organic sweeteners—she has strawberries, blueberries, and vanilla orchids on the vines!

Author's Note: The Indigenous Future
I would be remiss if I did not mention the indigenous elephant in the room within ‘Far Past the Ring’.
As you might have gathered, much of the background of both Medina Station and the three original characters are deep within First Nations/American Indian backgrounds*.
Tumblr media
(left to right: Dr. Sjael Drummer, Camina Drummer, and Dr. Tanke Drummer)
I have written both Sjael and Tanke Drummer as being of mixed Ojibwe descent through the Drummer side of their family, as is their cousin, canon Expanse character, Camina Drummer (Cara Gee, her actress, is Ojibwe First Nations, though whether or not Camina is in the show is not confirmed). Additionally, Timon Chapelle, Tanke’s husband, is of mixed-Metis descent as well. More about the land practices of Medina Station and the indigenous heritage it is drawn on can be read in my previous piece on the matter.
While researching for this work, I dug into the local history of the land I live on, which, coincidentally, is the unceded land of the Anishinaabe people. I am a settler, but I take deep pride in the place that I reside. I find it a responsibility as a citizen of my country to do so.
Tumblr media
(The region of the various Anishinaabe peoples, taken from Wikipedia. The author is not going to directly tell you where they are personally located)
As you might have guessed, the Kind Man (a form that the Protomolecule has taken in order to communicate with both Omega and James Holden) uses the form of Tanke and Sjael’s deceased father, Dr. Aki Drummer.
Tumblr media
(Image: Dr. Aki Drummer, drawn by the author in a quick sketch)
Aki is a Belter man of Ojibwe descent, who, while his story is not fully explored in this piece, does recall and use his heritage to better understand the nature of the humans that he serves as a physician, and later on, the Protomolecule uses to better understand the humans creating contact with each other from across the stars.
The Kind Man also tells Omega the story of the Legend of the Bluebonnet, which comes from the Comanche tribe of Texas, another American tribe who made the prairies of the United States their home for time immeasurable. The Kind Man mentions that, although he is not Comanche, he understands the story. The tale is a legend of a young girl’s sacrifice to save her prairie home and her people ... .the story that Omega will find herself repeating at the end of ‘Far Past the Ring’.
Tumblr media
(Image from 'The Legend of the Bluebonnet', by Tomie DiPaola. copyright Puffin Books)
The Kind Man also repeatedly uses a word in Ojibwe, one that, when I heard its meaning from James Vukelich (Ojibwe-Turtle Mountain) made me stop, write it down, and listen to his podcast episode again. I immediately knew this word would become a part of the story.
(If you can, please give his work a listen. He is a wonderful speaker.)
That word is Gidinawendimin, one word that means, ‘we are all related’. Vukelich goes into detail about how it is not only the people, but the animals, earth, water, all of life around us. And I could not help but think–”Holy hell, this is the thesis of the story.”
So, why am I rambling on about all of this?
Because indigeneity has its role in our future, and I tried my best to not only reflect that in this story, but because I staunchly believe in it as well.
The Belters are the people who helped build the solar system in ‘The Expanse’. They worked and lived in space to the point where many of their bodies can not survive normal gravity. Throughout the series, they face issues regarding access to water, air, and so many things that we often take for granted. They are seen as less than human in their own native environment of the Belt, and are often discriminated against by citizens of planets like Earth and Mars.
Tumblr media
Additionally, in the Star Wars universe, the clones are copies of a man from Mandalore, portrayed by an indigenous actor, and whether or not their indigeneity is canon in the show, I prefer to see it as such.
I want to be under the impression that, like in the real world, the dehumanization of indigenous peoples has irreparable damage to culture and heritage, to say nothing of the social bonds between people.
Tumblr media
This is known as intergenerational trauma, and is explained beautifully here in a video from Australia.
Fiction can be a powerful metaphor. In this case, this trauma rings through the clones within the Star Wars universe, and if they survive into greater society, will be a burden that their people will carry. Their descendants. The clones were people bred to serve one purpose, that of violence and war, and expected to be expendable machines, not as humans. They were stripped of culture, family, and heritage, and find themselves broken and lost when their use to the government is no longer sustainable.
It also isn’t lost on me that another character played by an indigenous actress–the incomparable Bobbie Draper, played by Samoan-Kiwi actress Frankie Adams–suffers a similar fate in The Expanse. She’s used by her government and tossed aside. But Draper rallies, finds camaraderie in others, and is able to be part of a team that saves the universe.
Tumblr media
She, like some survivors of systematic abuse, is able to help others navigate through the challenges of finding oneself again thanks to her own experiences. This is especially seen in her friendship with Hunter in Far Past the Ring, whose own trauma comes out in painful paranoia, anxiety, and rage that almost destroys everything he loves.
When common grounds are found, and alliances are made, a powerful voice of continuity and fortitude can be forged. With that, challenges, enemies can be fought, battled, and won. With friendship and the strength of rebuilding and reconnecting with culture–and respecting those of indigenous people–we can move forward.
We are all related.
I wrote all of this on the eve of September 30th, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada, the country that brought us The Expanse.
Tumblr media
(Taken from National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day - Waterloo Region District School Board (Waterloo Region District School Board)
This day is to commemorate the thousands of children of indigenous heritage who were taken from their homes, stripped of their culture and heritage. Many of them never came back to their families and homes. Thousands died.
It is only in recent history that this is acknowledged.
Similar instances also occurred in the United States, Australia, and countless other nations where indigenous people and their cultures were seen as an alien threat. They were not seen as fellow men, but as a part of the land that needed to be eradicated, controlled, and wiped out.
But survival happened. Still happens.
I hope that is reflected here, in a fictional story about the future…where the descendants of indigenous people use their skills and culture to push their people forward in our solar system.
Who forge friendships and alliances, who work to heal their trauma with the strength of their fellow man.
Who work together to stop a terrible empire from destroying their home.
I am a settler in the United States on the shores of Michigami, but I am a firm believer that the future of humanity lies within indigeneity. We will not reach the stars without it.
I have humbly done my best to reflect that in this story.
Miigwich.

We are getting spicy here for #OCSunday!
One of the big conflicts in ‘Far Past the Ring’ is Sjael Drummer’s proclivity to taking pictures and selfies of herself and those she likes. When someone else finds them….oh boy.
This includes the guy she has a torrid affair with…our boy Tech.
Gentle note that yes, that’s a wedding ring on her finger but she ain’t married to Goggles here!
Inspired by @eyecandyeoz ‘s awesome art of Tech! That man’s getting around like Santa Claus this week lol.

“I understand what it’s like to miss someone who is never coming back.” - James 'Jim' Holden, Kom Wanya Xom.
-----------------------
I need to stop dragging my OC through proverbial broken glass, but oh well. We all love whump here.
A massive plot point of Far Past the Ring is when a verbal message, in Lang Belta, is sent throughout the Known Galaxy. The message is received by clones on the run from the Empire...who trace it back to the world of The Expanse.
The message is from broken hearted Dr. Sjael Drummer (right), who is desperately trying to locate her lost love in the stars.
Jim Holden (left) captain of the Rocinante, is trying to talk her out of it.
I was playing 'Gortez a Run/J'Attends' by Denez Pregent and Lisa Gerrard on repeat the whole time.
I played it constantly the day after I watched 'Plan 99' as well. It's such a beautifully haunting, aching, wail of a song. I suggest you listen as well.

"You are both brilliant, and insane!"
@blitzink and their amazing art of Tech and his motorcycle inspired me to do a quick doodle of one of my favorite scenes from Far Past The Ring, where Tech figures out how to use Dr. Drummer's motorcycle, and they go for a few romantic rides on it as a result. It's my first time ever drawing a motorcycle!
God FUCKING damn it, writing these scenes were healing for me.
My college boyfriend loved his Suzuki Intruder, and I'll be damned if that beautiful bastard didn't break my heart.
I'm married to my wonderful Texas Tech, but god damn.

“On many systems, the stinger is actually considered a delicacy,” started Tech as they kept hiking.
Before he knew it, they had spent the better part of the day walking through the forest, planting monitors into the dirt, with Tech telling her stories about his experiences with Clone Force 99 and Sjael excitedly asking for more.

OC Time: Dr. Sjael Drummer
Tumblr media
Name: Sjael Drummer, Ph.D
Nickname/s: Sesata (Tanke, Miriam, Timon, Naomi), Shay-Bay (Tanke), Mama (Meg), Auntie (Tro, Blid, Haber), mi toki (“my laugh” in Lang Belta, Tech), Waffle Cones (Amos Burton, Jim Holden), Dr. D (Her assistants)
Age: 27(at beginning), 30 (at end)
Species: Human (Belter)
Height: 6’4 (shorter build for a Belter due to growing up with some gravity and better nutrition)
Weight/Build: 155 lbs, slender with wiry muscles
Gender: Female Pronouns: She/Her
Hair: Wavy dark brown, shaved on sides for access to helmet. Often wears in braid, or in ponytail
Eyes: Dark brown, almost black, very large for her long, oval face.
Sexuality: Straight
Relationship status: Single (at beginning)
Family: Tanke (sister), Timon (BIL), Miriam (SIL), Blid (nephew), Tro (niece), Haber (nephew), Lyse Roose (mother, dead), Dr Aki Drummer (father, dead), Anang Drummer (uncle, dead), Camina Drummer (cousin)
Occupation: Post Doctoral Chemical Researcher (at beginning), Senior Chemical Engineer of Medina Station (at end)
Current location/from: Medina Station/Ganymede, Sol System
Voice: Mezzo, with a light Belter lilt
Personality: Despite being raised in a ferociously independent, proud Belter family, Sjael is a sweet natured, bright person who genuinely sees the better side of most people. She considers it a duty and honor to care for others, and sees this as an inevitable part of growth in the Sol system. This comes from being raised as the adored youngest in her educated family, as her mother, like many Belter women, suffered from multiple pregnancy losses in between the births of her two living daughters. Sjael was raised somewhat sheltered in comparison to other Belter children, with a family member always there to protect her from most harmful things. This allowed her to keep a sense of quiet optimism, very unusual amongst the citizens of the Belt. Unlike her sister Tanke, Sjael still has a natural sense of curiosity, and adores getting people to learn with her, especially in regards to creating things out of organic material from a chemical background. She was especially attached to her doctor father, who died in the Eros incident while working in a free clinic for mothers and infants. However, recent events leading up to her current position–namely the siege of Ceres, the destruction of Ganymede, and the breakoff of her engagement with her ex-fiance, OPA terrorist and Free Navy pilot Toivo Saavedra–have left her more guarded.
Flaws: Sjael, in true Belter fashion, lacks tact, and assumes that everyone is interested in the subjects that she talks about, occasionally infuriating or upsetting others. Used to being protected by her family members and friends (such as her cousin, Camina Drummer), she often lacks courage in situations that truly call for them, and prefers to either negotiate or run–which has had devastating consequences for her. Finally, her kindness and inclusivity can–and has–backfired on her massively, as she has been brutally taken advantage of.
Likes: plants (especially flowers), science experiments, birds, vanilla, cooking, baking, mushrooms, making people smile, children, photography, learning, riding bikes of any kind, hot drinks (coffee and redbush tea are her favorites).
Dislikes: Messes, meat, politics, bad smells, technology that doesn’t easily work, large parties with lots of socializing, yelling.
Desire: Sjael wants a stable future for her people, most of all, those who are close to her–she is a space version of a Disney princess. She does this through her research as a chemical engineer, discovering new ways to make flavors and foods safer for the many galaxies in the Slow Zone. However, by meeting Clone Force 99 and the remains of the GAR, she finds a new group to protect, who in turn help propel her own people forward. She finds new ways to gain courage, as a pilot and as a supporter of the fighters that she loves.
