Rodolphus Lestrange has never questioned the nature of his reality, nor has he ever had a reason to. Born in the opulent beauty of Lestrange Manor in Gloucestershire into fine silks and doting parents, Marie Lestrange had known what it was to grow up in a city surrounded by muggles, muggle-borns and half-bloods and she had never been happier than when her new husband whisked her away to the British countryside. Rodolphus lived a charmed yet solitary childhood with only his mother, father, younger brother RABASTAN LESTRANGE [brother] and their house elves for company. Rodolphus recalls his childhood as a highly-engaging and loving one, with stories of his legacy before bed and days spent playing happily with his brother in the rose gardens of their home. From the noble houses of Lestrange and Lenoir, Rodolphus has often been told he was destined for greatness. Thiebuat Lestrange had worked closely with numerous Ministers for Magic, having even unseated one with other members of The Sacred Twenty-Eight when he had disagreed with him getting into office. 

Although he attended the glittering balls and parties held by his parents and their families growing up, Rodolphus had always found his family different from the others. The Lestranges were an impregnable fortress, who valued family above all else. Their parents had always maintained that when everything was said and done, Rodolphus and Rabastan would only have one another and while it was their greatest wish for them to find true love as they had done, blood would always be thicker than water. Hogwarts School was not just a chance for education for Rodolphus, but at the instruction of his family it was a chance to strengthen bonds with other notable families. Sorted into Slytherin, Rodolphus struck up friendships with BELLATRIX BLACK [close friend/potential love interest] and ARISTAEUS GREENGRASS [best friend]. Both families were of interest to his parents, but Bellatrix in particular was someone they wanted him to befriend. Having found a love match, his mother was dead against the idea of striking up a marriage pact with one of the other families, but had cited Bellatrix as someone she was interested in for her son. 

In the beginning he had found her company pleasant, but the older they grew the more outrageous he found her, until by their final year, he struggled to recognise her at all. Rodolphus had always been clear in his view on blood purity. Their families were the best that The Wizarding World had to offer and their blood and lineage made them destined for careers in high places. The torturing of muggle-born children, sparring matches with notable idiots like CHARITY BURBAGE [adversary] and the barating of blood traitor teachers, which Bellatrix enjoyed parking in, were in his opinion a wasted way to get that point across. Power came to those who knew how to appeal to the masses whilst silently pushing your own agenda. Aligning himself with Bellatrix increasingly felt more like risk than reward, so instead he spent his time with Aristaeus, DECIUS FLINT [best friend], CORDELIA DAVIS [former friend], NATALIA SIMINOVA [close friend] and LUCIUS MALFOY [close friend] who he found far less tiresome despite Lucius’ over inflated ego. A personal favourite of Horrace Slughorn, Rodolphus graduated a member of The Slug Club and celebrated Slytherin with immaculate grades.

Quickly he accepted a job at The Ministry of Magic working as a legal assistant for Bellatrix’s father CYGNUS BLACK [former mentor]. Cygnus was the best in his profession; and Rodolphus was focused on learning as much as he could from him. His first ten years working in law Rodolphus was blind to the world around him, working and winning cases until he was finally a defence barrister for The Ministry. With his mentor now a judge for Wizengemot, Rodolphus was looking for legal help and found it in the form of his middle daughter ANDROMEDA BLACK [colleague/potential love interest]. An accomplished witch, Rodolphus found her much more like her father than her sister, though he noticed she approached cases with a sense of humanity rather than his sheer determination to win. Andromeda cared about her cases, which despite his better instincts he found admirable. Rodolphus fell in love with her somewhere in the plethora of late nights spent at his flat pouring over cases by candlelight, but he feared he discovered his feelings when it might have been too late for them both. 

The death of BOOKER BAGNOLD [person of interest] plunged Rodolphus into a new world. A disgraced American werewolf, Rodolphus was confident SILAS CRUMP [former client] had not committed the crime he was accused of, but another name kept propping up instead. In the time he had been focused on elevating himself at work, Rodolphus and his brother had grown distant, wrapped up in their own endeavours. It hadn’t been clear to him at first, but Rabastan’s name came up again and again. In the wrong place at the wrong time, or with the wrong people. At first, Rodolphus was concerned, gathering evidence away from Andromeda. Long into the night he would pour over the photographs from The Halloween Ball, circling the people and reading over their interview notes. The more research he did it became increasingly clear that Silas was indeed the unfortunate one. It didn’t take a genius to work out Booker’s death had been the work of a spell rather than a werewolf, but it was only when AMELIA BONES [former colleague] began sniffing around his brother and subsequently died after speaking to Rabastan, he could no longer hide his suspicions. 

Gathering evidence Rodolphus laid it out for Rabastan and was told he had joined the cult of a mysterious man known to him as THE DARK LORD [person of interest], with Bellatrix introducing the two. Rodolphus was livid. Not only had his brother signed his life away to a man he barely knew, he had murdered people for him and risked his own safety in process. For the first time in his career Rodolphus went against his better judgement and buried evidence for his brother, throwing the case of Silas and actively allowing REGULUS BLACK [legal assistant] to help him frame MASON TREMBLAY [person of interest] for the murder of Amelia to defelect attention from Rabastan. Although he vowed he would not assist Rabastan in his affairs again, Rodolphus knows it will not be the last time. With more cases piling up on his desk, it is only a matter of time before he faces another knock at the door. Outside of his work Rodolphus has been investigating into the group and the man his brother now belongs to, all under the nose of an increasingly suspicious Andromeda, who he’s trying to spare having to make the same difficult decision.

can we. can we talk about how in the final lucien fight, Essek failed to resist the slow effect from one of the eyes (he rolled two natural 1s in a row). canonically, he was weighed down with with so much shame and guilt that he could barely move—the same guilt that he is seriously considering going back in time to undo—and he didn’t use his fortune’s favor reroll to try to alleviate it.

I also cannot stress enough that not getting to hold the baby is in fact what makes JGY evil in CQL. Yes, JGY's been framed with some ominous cellos when he is just sitting there, but up till this point it's all been in conjunction with something JGS is sponsoring. He is perfectly happy planning that wedding! No self-generated schemes are afoot! Then JGS doesn't let him hold his nephew and immediately he starts mentally setting up an implausible plot-altering row of murder dominoes.

Despite only minutes between them, Gorkem is the older of the Polat brothers. He was followed up by his brother and destined best friend, FURKAN POLAT [brother]. Born the eldest son of the Polat family they were thrust into the lap of luxury. Though neither boy cared much for the prestige that came from their family name, they were still taught all there was to being in the Sacred Twenty-Eight. Gorkem was the mischievous one, the one who came up with the pranks and executed them perfectly, while Furkan did all the prep and planning. He was the one getting scolded for ruining his best robes or causing mayhem in the kitchen with the house elves. The world was Gideon’s playground and there were no limits, as long as Furkan had his back, things would be okay. With their parents away, galavanting in society, Gideon and Furkan were often left watching over their little sister MIRAY WEASLEY [sister] though no one complained as Miray was the perfect addition to their antics. The twins never let Miray feel lonely, always including her in all their tricks. Gorkem found that the three of them fit well, they were as close as siblings could be and Gorkem appreciated the connection they had.

Wherever one of them went, the other wasn’t far behind. When they were together they would often be found with heads bent down, planning their next prank on the unsuspecting neighboring kids. But even identical twins find ways to be different, while Furkan preferred his books and the greenhouse, Gorkem preferred to take to the skies when they weren’t pulling pranks. He was a natural on a broom, always reading up on the latest league scores in the Prophet or attempting all the tricks he’d heard the professionals did. He had become obsessed with it when he would often be ripping the Daily Prophet out of his father’s hands during breakfast so he could read up on the latest league scores. His love for the game often had the family of five making various trips to Quality Quidditch Supplies every time they visited Diagon Alley. It was an afternoon full of dramatics when Gorkem found out he wouldn’t be allowed to bring his broom to Hogwarts during his first year, he had dreamed of making his house team and becoming a star player. But the moment passed quickly the longer Gideon thought about the new friends he would make that weren't his siblings or other Twenty-Eight members.

It was no surprise to see his brother sorted into Hufflepuff and Gorkem took pride in how quickly the hat had announced the same house for him shortly after. A small part of nerves now settled within him as he realized he wouldn’t have to be rooming away from his brother. At first Furkan and Gorkem stuck together as they navigated the new terrain, but soon enough Gorkem, being the social guy he was, began extending his hand towards those who may get him some credit with the Quidditch team. He grew close to JORDANNA O’MALLEY [best friend], NOLAN WILLIAMS [close friend], and KOA TANAKA [close friend], all of whom enjoyed Quidditch as much as he did. When he wasn’t socializing with his friends, he was off practicing his flying or pulling pranks on unsuspecting students with Furkan. He trained long and hard to make the Hufflepuff team by his second year, excelling in his position as a chaser even at the young age of twelve. Thankfully with Furkan at his side, his grades remained good despite his disinterest in his classes.

In the later years of school, Gorkem quickly learned that parties were the best way to network outside of your house and soon enough everyone knew about the Polat parties. Students from all ages and houses would find their way attending whenever Gorkem would announce the date, Furkan being the one to always make sure Miray would tag along with her friends as the twins knew she needed to let loose occasionally. It was through these parties that Gorkem met LINA KLEIN [close friend] and DOMINIC TRAVERS [close friend], who he had only started to grow close to in the last years at school. The more he hung out with them the more his extended friend circle grew to consist of Slytherins and Ravenclaws. Many of the people in the group had strong opinions about blood purity, which Gorkem tended to ignore as he was on the fence about those opinions. He wasn’t sure if he believed it wholeheartedly or simply because it was what he had been taught by his parents. He instead focused on the good times he’d have with them at parties. When Furkan began distancing himself to focus on his studies their last year, Gorkem attempted to do the same knowing that a great Quidditch reputation accompanied by good grades would open doors for him.

Graduating Hogwarts had meant a new path for Gorkem, he had applied to a few teams in the British and Irish league and had been accepted for a tryout for a few. But when faced with the reality of a Quidditch career, Gorkem found his heart just wasn’t in it like it had been in his childhood. He witnessed how politics had seeped into the cores of the teams and how many only worked together for the sake of their fans. That wasn’t the dream Gorkem had so he instead applied at Quality Quidditch Supplies in hopes to keep his love of Quidditch still close. It was during this time that their parents had made it known they disowned Miray for marrying her longtime boyfriend ARTHUR WEASLEY [close friend/brother-in-law]. It had been then and there Gorkem’s eyes were opened as he yelled at his own parents for kicking his sister aside for marrying the man she loves. Miray and Furkan had been his people, the ones always supporting him in anything he did, to lose one of them was like losing a piece of himself and Gorkem wouldn’t have it. Even if it meant losing his parents. Together with Furkan, they sent a letter of support to Arthur and Miray only to get one in return requesting their presence at an elopement ceremony.

During a celebratory dinner after the ceremony, Arthur let Furkan and Gorkem in on the secret of the Order of the Phoenix. A secret organization that had come together to fight the injustice that was growing in the community. Gorkem immediately threw his hat into the ring, still angry at their parents, and Furkan quickly followed. It had been during a conversation later with Arthur’s friend LILAS ROSMERTA [friend] that Furkan approached the topic of Gorkem potentially acting as a spy for the Order. Furkan argued that with his connections to Lina and Dominic, it would be easy. And so far it has been. Gorkem had been tasked by the Dark Lord to accompany KERVENS BORGIN [acquaintance] and CAIUS BURKE [acquaintance] on a mission to retrieve a prophecy from the Ministry. It had been unsuccessful for the Death Eaters but the Order came out victorious. The night he was punished for his failure is a night he had never spoken about, not even to Furkan. Even after the fiasco that was the year 1983, he does his best to keep his roles in this war separate but the closer his family gets to the front lines, the less Gorkem believes he’ll be able to withstand being hidden amongst the Death Eater Army when his heart belongs with the Order.

I just realized that Ekaterin Vorkosigansaga's maiden name is Vorvayne because the structure and nature of her and Miles's romance are heavily inspired by Sayers's Wimsey novels, in which the romantic heroine is called Harriet Vane.

#I've never read the wimsey novels even though I have been vaguely aware of their existence since before I went through puberty #for some reason I spent a long time thinking that Lord Peter Wimsey was a wizard detective lol #but in these months I've been hyperaware of them because I keep making all these Bujold vs. Dunnett comparisons in my head #on so many topics very relevant to my heart #and I once had a theory that Bujold was inspired by Dunnett but I kept thinking that #this can't be true #because if it's true then Bujold misconstrued or ignored a lot of what Dorothy was saying in pretty in-your-face ways #and then I realized nah #they were both inspired by Sayers #they had the same parting point and each seems to have taken the elements they liked and made them her own #and each developed and elaborated on those elements while introducing other unique elements of her own from other sources #which makes a lot more sense and makes for a fascinating comparative reading project :3 #vorkosigan saga #lord peter wimsey

ok i thought about it and actually, the wildest thing in the wizard of oz series (to me) was when the tin man, scarecrow, and A Random Child whose name I can't remember all went to find the tin man's ex. and they stop at tin man's buddy's house, to see if he knows where said ex is these days, and buddy isn't there, so they go inside to wait for him

and the house???? is full of severed body parts?????? just everywhere, they're in a barrel by the door, they're on the table, just chunks of clearly human flesh and a mess of limbs and whatnot, tin man thinks this is fine, scarecrow is really creeped out, scarecrow opens a cabinet and finds a severed human head

tin man runs on over and is like "what the f- oh that's me lol" and it's??? HIS old severed head??? so the scarecrow is just barely recovered from this, tin man is explaining the situation of how he became tin again, etc. etc.

and then the eyes open

and long story short the tin man's soul transferred to his new tin body, but it takes more than having your soul removed to kill you in oz... so his old body is still alive, but without its memories and completely confused and disoriented

the friend comes back and casually mentions how it took a bit for the transferring to finish, and after that the head just didn't remember anything. that means there was a bit there where this head DID have all of the tin man's memories still, and as far as he knew his friend had just left him without a body in a cabinet, unable to move, while the rest of his body just... walked off without him. literally horrific and the tin man is just like "haha! how quirky!" and honestly it's not the worst thing to have happened to him so i can't fault him for that but like. i'd be a little worried if one of my oldest friends told me that they'd totally leave me in a cabinet while my soul slowly left my body and wouldn't even feel bad.

YOU MADE ME A MURDERER AFTER I DIED. REAL COOL VICTOR WHAT WAS THE PLAN HERE. #except in this case the resulting person #this isn't a joke #the resulting person went out. and married the tin man's ex #it was the wildest scene #him and the other guy who got turned into tin had #as it turned out #both been engaged to this girl #so they show up #and find out that she married both of their corpses basically #but the corpse was alive and just. pissed off all the time
