Despite only minutes between them, Gorkem is the older of the Polat brothers. He was followed up by his brother and destined best friend, FURKAN POLAT [brother]. Born the eldest son of the Polat family they were thrust into the lap of luxury. Though neither boy cared much for the prestige that came from their family name, they were still taught all there was to being in the Sacred Twenty-Eight. Gorkem was the mischievous one, the one who came up with the pranks and executed them perfectly, while Furkan did all the prep and planning. He was the one getting scolded for ruining his best robes or causing mayhem in the kitchen with the house elves. The world was Gideon’s playground and there were no limits, as long as Furkan had his back, things would be okay. With their parents away, galavanting in society, Gideon and Furkan were often left watching over their little sister MIRAY WEASLEY [sister] though no one complained as Miray was the perfect addition to their antics. The twins never let Miray feel lonely, always including her in all their tricks. Gorkem found that the three of them fit well, they were as close as siblings could be and Gorkem appreciated the connection they had.

Wherever one of them went, the other wasn’t far behind. When they were together they would often be found with heads bent down, planning their next prank on the unsuspecting neighboring kids. But even identical twins find ways to be different, while Furkan preferred his books and the greenhouse, Gorkem preferred to take to the skies when they weren’t pulling pranks. He was a natural on a broom, always reading up on the latest league scores in the Prophet or attempting all the tricks he’d heard the professionals did. He had become obsessed with it when he would often be ripping the Daily Prophet out of his father’s hands during breakfast so he could read up on the latest league scores. His love for the game often had the family of five making various trips to Quality Quidditch Supplies every time they visited Diagon Alley. It was an afternoon full of dramatics when Gorkem found out he wouldn’t be allowed to bring his broom to Hogwarts during his first year, he had dreamed of making his house team and becoming a star player. But the moment passed quickly the longer Gideon thought about the new friends he would make that weren't his siblings or other Twenty-Eight members.

It was no surprise to see his brother sorted into Hufflepuff and Gorkem took pride in how quickly the hat had announced the same house for him shortly after. A small part of nerves now settled within him as he realized he wouldn’t have to be rooming away from his brother. At first Furkan and Gorkem stuck together as they navigated the new terrain, but soon enough Gorkem, being the social guy he was, began extending his hand towards those who may get him some credit with the Quidditch team. He grew close to JORDANNA O’MALLEY [best friend], NOLAN WILLIAMS [close friend], and KOA TANAKA [close friend], all of whom enjoyed Quidditch as much as he did. When he wasn’t socializing with his friends, he was off practicing his flying or pulling pranks on unsuspecting students with Furkan. He trained long and hard to make the Hufflepuff team by his second year, excelling in his position as a chaser even at the young age of twelve. Thankfully with Furkan at his side, his grades remained good despite his disinterest in his classes.

In the later years of school, Gorkem quickly learned that parties were the best way to network outside of your house and soon enough everyone knew about the Polat parties. Students from all ages and houses would find their way attending whenever Gorkem would announce the date, Furkan being the one to always make sure Miray would tag along with her friends as the twins knew she needed to let loose occasionally. It was through these parties that Gorkem met LINA KLEIN [close friend] and DOMINIC TRAVERS [close friend], who he had only started to grow close to in the last years at school. The more he hung out with them the more his extended friend circle grew to consist of Slytherins and Ravenclaws. Many of the people in the group had strong opinions about blood purity, which Gorkem tended to ignore as he was on the fence about those opinions. He wasn’t sure if he believed it wholeheartedly or simply because it was what he had been taught by his parents. He instead focused on the good times he’d have with them at parties. When Furkan began distancing himself to focus on his studies their last year, Gorkem attempted to do the same knowing that a great Quidditch reputation accompanied by good grades would open doors for him.

Graduating Hogwarts had meant a new path for Gorkem, he had applied to a few teams in the British and Irish league and had been accepted for a tryout for a few. But when faced with the reality of a Quidditch career, Gorkem found his heart just wasn’t in it like it had been in his childhood. He witnessed how politics had seeped into the cores of the teams and how many only worked together for the sake of their fans. That wasn’t the dream Gorkem had so he instead applied at Quality Quidditch Supplies in hopes to keep his love of Quidditch still close. It was during this time that their parents had made it known they disowned Miray for marrying her longtime boyfriend ARTHUR WEASLEY [close friend/brother-in-law]. It had been then and there Gorkem’s eyes were opened as he yelled at his own parents for kicking his sister aside for marrying the man she loves. Miray and Furkan had been his people, the ones always supporting him in anything he did, to lose one of them was like losing a piece of himself and Gorkem wouldn’t have it. Even if it meant losing his parents. Together with Furkan, they sent a letter of support to Arthur and Miray only to get one in return requesting their presence at an elopement ceremony.

During a celebratory dinner after the ceremony, Arthur let Furkan and Gorkem in on the secret of the Order of the Phoenix. A secret organization that had come together to fight the injustice that was growing in the community. Gorkem immediately threw his hat into the ring, still angry at their parents, and Furkan quickly followed. It had been during a conversation later with Arthur’s friend LILAS ROSMERTA [friend] that Furkan approached the topic of Gorkem potentially acting as a spy for the Order. Furkan argued that with his connections to Lina and Dominic, it would be easy. And so far it has been. Gorkem had been tasked by the Dark Lord to accompany KERVENS BORGIN [acquaintance] and CAIUS BURKE [acquaintance] on a mission to retrieve a prophecy from the Ministry. It had been unsuccessful for the Death Eaters but the Order came out victorious. The night he was punished for his failure is a night he had never spoken about, not even to Furkan. Even after the fiasco that was the year 1983, he does his best to keep his roles in this war separate but the closer his family gets to the front lines, the less Gorkem believes he’ll be able to withstand being hidden amongst the Death Eater Army when his heart belongs with the Order.
