~~@symbruary time!!!~~ For day one, xenobiology, please have a diagram I dew for @bakageta for the holidays. I've got another one somewhere on paper but IDK where yet. We'll see if I find it before the month ends.
Anyway! This is how my 4D symbiotes work WRT a host. Symbiote tissue in black, Host tissue in red, other matter in green, and reality/plane/dimension stuff in blue.
The basic thrust of it is that the main symbiote body is in a pocket dimension floating outside another reality. We'll call that the material universe, but insert whatever marvel 616/MCU/etc dimension you want. The symbiote pocket is tethered to an anchor - a part of the host that either thinks (produces VitT) or initiates signals to control the host body, typically a brain or brain-analogue - by the symbiote's hold-fast, an organ that specializes in host-klyntar integration and communication. The graphic doesn't say so, but a symbiote can tether to its own biomass, which is how they don't just sucked out of reality without a host, but it doesn't help with the next part.
Connecting the pocket dimension and material reality via the host is the threshhold, which can be thought of kind of like a hallway/throat/tunnel/meniscus membrane leading from the body of the host into a non-xyzt dimension and ending at the symbiote pocket. Through this, the symbiote can send biomass and have it emerge at any bit of the host's body, or have it hover just out of phase in order to perceive inner processes. Nutrients and resources can be gathered in the material world and transferred through the threshhold. Though passing into the pocket itself will scramble/digest them, they can be instead temporarily stored in the threshold itself to be pulled to either side later.
Parts of the host, or its entirety, can be held out of material reality if cantilevered by equal or greater symbiote mass. When this is done it is safely stored in the threshhold. This is not quite suspended animation, and is both tricky and somewhat taxing to both components, but can temporarily remove the threat of damage to the host. The failure state of this is the host falling back into reality, not being stuck in the threshhold or being drawn into the pocket.
Ease of transfer through the threshhold - the "bandwidth", basically, the amount that can be stored there and the safety of those things is directly correlated to host compatibility, though host size and symbiote health are also a factor. Communication counts towards the bandwidth limit, and that includes between pieces of the symbiote itself.
A hostless symbiote, especially one with very little mass left out in the world, has its mind throttled. This can be somewhat mitigated by hardcoding some memories into its biomass beforehand, or creating structures analogous to a brain, but that is a stopgap at best. The hold-fast itself contains the very minimum that the symbiote needs to be able to reconnect to a host, but it is life support at best, and without that or with the threshhold severed entirely they are essentially dead no matter the amount of resources and life in the pocket, as it has no way to reattach to a reality and will simply drift away and starve.
Similarly, any bits of symbiotic biomass cut off from the main body, whether that's a a chunk taken out of the whole or the other side of the severed threshhold coin, are mindless. They might flop around for a bit based on existing pre-programming and movement structures, but they have no will behind them and will soon die unless reattached to the main mass.
Uhhh... what else is in this picture?
That physics in the material world vs the pocket are different, are the threshhold is less concrete than that (labelled as "physics???"). There is some influence by the pocket, some by the material world, some by whatever dimension the threshhold is tunnelling through (not necessarily stable), and it can also be changed somewhat by choice and will. This is helpful when you've got part of the host in there and only want some biological processes to run and not others, or you want to have raw biomass in the same space as your gameboy, which would normally require incompatible sets of physics; biomass in the material world needs to have some shape and structure and stuff.
They symbiote main body has a bunch of raw biomass and some organs - (digestion, thinking, memory storage, chemical production, etc), some pockets of digested resources (single-type atoms/molecules mostly) [Carbon dioxide, silicone, bone], and indigestible resources (scrambled). Those contrast with the host organs on the host side (the host is depicted as a human), and the host's digestion, as well as the nondigested resources in the threshhold, depicted as a boot, a pencil, a gameboy, and a bone.

so many nights, maybe too many nights, had the symbiote watched its host from behind the bars of the small prison cell window before it finally dared to creep inside, sliding like a shadow across the floor.
it was well into the night at that point. well enough for the sweat from its host's nightly work out routine (one might call it a ritual) to have dried off the floor completely.
now its host snored lightly, sprawled on his stomach onto the too small twin-size mattress of his bottom bunk bed, an arm dangling off the side, and his feet off the bottom.
the symbiote stood beside him, trying to take in as many details as it could from the safe distance. anything that might've slipped its mind in the weeks spent apart. the tone of his resounding breaths, the size of his pores, the exact curve of his nose.
it was slower than the symbiote would life, observing only through its big white eyes. and each passing second it felt a growing sense of danger, being there. it could not yet risk to get caught.
there was also a tingling urge, the broken bond begging to be mended. it noticed eddie's skin covered in goosebumps, mirroring its own instinctive draw to him.
eddie. the voiceless word scratching its remembered throat. the whole phantom feeling accompanied it, of air leaving the lungs through the mouth, the relaxed shape of the lips, the positions of the tongue, how it deliciously cut the air flow a third into the word against the roof of the mouth, just behind the upper front teeth. a tasteful word. one of its favorites.
the symbiote knew it would be quicker, instantaneous, to take everything in by bonding to eddie. for just a moment! it extended a tentative tendril, but hesitated before it reached its host's face. that would've been even more dangerous. eddie would know, it thought. would recognize its feeling on his body at once, waking him from his slumber, however deep.
maybe that was the symbiote's wishful thinking, hoping to be remembered and recognized. or maybe it was a realistic understanding of how bonding felt to a host like eddie. so the threat remained and the symbiote stood still.
that is, until eddie shifted in his sleep with a snort, startling the symbiote to hide under the bed.
from there it could only see eddie's dangling hand. the symbiote looked at it curiously, wishing to touch it. it looked different. still familiar, but different. there was a visible new roughness to it. calloused almost as much as it had been before they first bonded, the wounds of vigorously working out, it recognized, wishing even harder to touch it. proof of the time they'd been apart. it wanted to heal that hand as it had before, making it soft again. the hands it grew to know. and to love?
even now that feeling still seemed alien to it, maybe more consciously than unconsciously. the knowledge that it was in fact alien tainting how natural it felt. so much so that the thought of it snapped the symbiote out of its curiosity back to hesitation.
so instead of touching and healing that fallen hand like it wanted to, the symbiote only cautiously slipped from under the bed towards the window, afraid its host might be dangerously close to waking now. he could still be far from it, but the symbiote had already decided it was not worth the risk, not yet.

I know 2AM isn't the best time to post this but I got stuff to do tomorrow and I'm afraid I'll forget. A reminder to new followers that every February I attempt a thing called "Featheruary" where I reblog pictures of birds or winged creatures, once or twice a day. Usually with a focus on feathered wings but I might branch out this year. I'll also probably try to draw some stuff too. Anyways all these posts will be tagged with "featheruary" for easy black listing. Usually I lose steam halfway through the month though lmao. I'm also tempted to do some "Symbruary" prompts with Miles and R since it's been a hot min since I've talked about them, and this year the event is open to non Klyntar symbiote characters. Again that stuff will be tagged for easy black listing. Last but not least there's a body horror event in the Trigun fandom going on mid Feb, and I'm also tempted to do a prompt or two there. We'll see. That one will be tagged too, not sure with what yet, but I'll let people know ahead of time.

@symbruary: enemy/ally
their pseudo-sisterly bond has always been interesting to me. there’s a lot of love/hate going on there. mayday saved april from a life of loneliness, but is also a teenager who sometimes wishes she didn’t, since april gets on her nerves. april both wants mayday dead and can’t bring herself to kill her. would’ve loved to see more exploration of their dynamic, tbh. it would have been nice to see them develop into being better sisters to one another.
also would have loved if the writers and artists were less creepy about mayday

Day 2 of @symbruary ! It’s hard to pick a favorite sym character-wise, since it’s one of those “depends on who’s writing” type deals, but c’mon… look. at. her.
In her off time, Scream moonlights as a glamour shot model. This one is called “Liquid Sunset”

Symbruary Prompt #1
So for the first prompt @symbruary, I’m using my WIP fic ‘Avengers Forever’, which has ‘rewriting the Marvel Universe’ in its DNA. This is basically my writing bible for Venom in that story, though you can read it on its own as just fun headcanons.
1. The end of Planet of the Symbiotes is treated as a major event with a permanent effect on Venom. Eddie Brock and his Other are bonded so completely that they cannot survive without each other. They’ll slowly die while separated. At first, this process of dying is very slow, so that the events of the original Hunger still take place, but as the years go by, it becomes harder and harder to separate them and the process of dying when they are separated speeds up. First Host involves Sleeper doing its best to keep Eddie alive while they race against the clock to save his Other from Tel-Kar and reunite Venom before they perish. After First Host, they cannot separate at all. Just how they like it.
2. Anti-Venom and Agent Venom never happen. The symbiote never turns evil for no reason and Eddie never gets rid of it. Instead, the symbiote is taken from Eddie during the events of Civil War and placed on Mac Gargan, being told by Norman Osborn that Eddie will be killed if it tries to return to him. The symbiote plots to kill Osborn but is beaten to the punch when the Avengers apprehend him. The symbiote, after roughly two months of terror and misery in being bonded with Mac gleefully returns to Eddie and the two begin to heal through the trauma. Cue the Costa run, starting at issue #150.

Somewhat belated entry for day 14 of @symbruary - Favorite fanworks!
If I tried to do a pic for all of the amazing, wonderful fics I’ve read, I would never get anything else done ever :’D So I tried to narrow it down to the ones that have stuck with me for months and months after first reading them. Been meaning to draw fanart for these for ages, so this was a great opportunity!
FYI before clicking links: all of these are Mature/Explicit
Dust to Dust by amaronith, kitausuret (@kitausuret, @amaronith)
Slow-burn SymbiOT3 fic that I absolutely adore. I love how it takes Eddie and Flash a while to even see each other face to face! There’s so much drama and fun dialogue, and Andi is an absolute gem. The plot itself is super interesting, and I can’t wait to see how it interweaves with Flash and Eddie getting to know each other better.
I think I'm starting to like you by softgrungeprophet (@softgrungeprophet)
Yet another SymbiOT3, this is the first in the Peachy series! The series as a whole is wonderful, and the character development for all three is beautiful. Especially Flash coming to terms with gender identity stuff! The series always gives me such a warm cozy feeling reading it.
How I Met my Brother and Regretted Everything by Prince_of_Trash (@princess-of-peachtrees)
To be completely 100% honest, I did not care at all about Carnage as a character before reading this fic. Now I fucking love him and his rat-bastard self. AND RED, OH MY GOD RED. This fic has one of my favorite characterizations of Sleeper, and is an absolutely hysterical ride. Even with the funny setup, tho, it still does a great job of hammering home the sadder scenes with amazing skill.
The Dangers of Investigative Journalism by NecroFaix (@fictionplumis)
SymbiOT3, but this time with Movie!Eddie! The characterizations in this fic are fantastic, and I especially love how much it delves into Flash’s head (the angst is delicious). The pacing is phenomenal, and the progression of Eddie and Flash’s relationship feels incredibly natural in a way that makes me feel for them and their beloved goo alien when anything goes wrong.
All of these are fics that I love to go back to for inspiration, or just a fun time! I highly recommend checking out all of these wonderful authors and their other works as well!
Obviously there are also fantastic artists in our fandom ( @d-erm, @owlapinart, and @freedomconvicted to name a few!) I’d list them all but others have wonderfully done that already, so I suggest perusing the rec lists I’ve reblogged because we have so many incredible people providing quality Venom content <3

23, 25, and 34 From the 35 Questions list!
23. Do you prefer prompts and challenges, or completely independent ideas?
I absolutely thrive on prompts and challenges. A lot of times I have a bunch of random ideas bouncing around in my head, but it's really hard for me to get motivated to complete them. Having a prompt, even if I am doing the loosest interpretation in the WORLD of that prompt, gives me an excuse to actually Write the Damn Thing. Prompt challenges are my favorite. That's why I've injected @symbruary directly into my veins the last three years!
25. Have you ever daydreamed about side adventures/spin-offs from your fic? Tell us about them!
Absolutely. I have tons of these kinds of ideas, but at least regarding Dust to Dust (and to a lesser but probably more relevant extent, "We've Got Us" [the fic with Jubulile and Toxin post-Carnage) I would love to write a bunch of spin-offs. And by spin-offs I mean f/f stuff. Originally for DTD I was thinking Liz/Felicia, but the more I think about it the more I want to somehow make Liz/Betty a thing, especially since they will both be so recurrent in the fic.
I also want to explore some stuff with Manny/Vicky, if only because there's Literally Nothing for either of them. I haven't decided if I want Manuela Calderon to stick around New York or if I'm going to ship her back to Virginia, but I'd like to think that she and Vicky get a stable if occasionally long-distance-ish relationship. Victoria Montesi is also a very cool character of her own right, and I think maybe some follow-up for their lives is deserved. It would be way more loosely tangential to the actual events of DTD, though, if only because you can only make a "shut up, Brock" joke so many times before it wears thin. (I'm kidding, it's always funny.)
34. Copy and paste an excerpt you’re particularly fond of.
HEHE I get to do this again. Since I just talked about "(Whatever Happens) We've Got Us" let me give a little bit of a part I really enjoyed writing and meant a lot to me:
His smile faded. "Jubulile, I'm trying my best, but I don't mind telling you I'm a long ways from okay." He crossed his arms and stared out at the ocean. "Toxin and I… we weren't a good match. There's only one symbiote that ever was and we ended badly. But it takes work to be symbiotic. That's something I wish I'd realized sooner. You get out of it what you put into it." "In the end, though, you were heroes, right?" "I wasn't the one who pushed Chthon back into hell." "You helped protect me, and everyone." She nudged him back. "My father was my hero, and I think he would've thought the same of you." "All I did was hand Toxin over to you." Still, Eddie's smile looked a little emotional. "But, yeah, I guess we were heroes."
It's very subtle because I really wanted this fic to be about Jubulile and not Eddie Brock, because I've written enough of that, but I think internally Eddie would cry a little over the comparison. Jubulile adored her father, he was a wonderful man, and Eddie can tell as much from the way she talks about him. Given his extremely strained relationship with his own father, hearing from Jubulile that she thinks her father would've appreciated Eddie's efforts... it had to mean something to him.
35. Ramble about any fic-related thing you want!
Writing is hard and sometimes you go 6 months or 19 months without an update and sometimes you just can't write and sometimes you write a lot and nobody looks at it but just remember that even one hit, one kudos, means that somebody is happy that you shared your work. They are happy you shared your fic with the world and I hope anyone who's reading this remembers that. Your weird rarepair that you had to create the tag for; that obscure character who was in just a couple issues; your polyship that someone else frowned upon inspired something in you and that's beautiful. If it makes you happy, keep writing, keep creating, and keep sharing. I love you and I support you. 💕
Ask me about my fics!

Eddie Shows Off His Vocabulary
Written for @symbruary Day 28: "emotions". We're in the home stretch!! I passed up an opportunity on "noises" to have the symbiote make squishy sounds, so today I'm making up for that.
Peak symbrock is symby doing semi-gross goo things while Eddie talks about it like it's Aphrodite. I think this is the most pure undiluted fluff I've written all month.
###
Eddie sat slouched with his arms crossed on the table and chin cradled in his arms, watching as the symbiote oozed across the table. He'd spread out a box of chocolates on the table top and the symbiote was slowly rolling over them, absorbing and savoring the chocolates one piece at a time.
Eddie said, "You're breathtaking."
The symbiote froze with half a chocolate rectangle sticking out of its surface. "Squoo?"
"Absolutely sublime."
"Sp, sp sp." It pulled itself up into a shape that was less pancake batter and more jello mold.
"Magnificent."
The symbiote wiggled gently, then sucked the chocolate the rest of the way in.
As it oozed toward a circular piece, Eddie uncrossed an arm and held his hand over the symbiote, pressing one fingertip gently atop it. It arched up against his hand like a cat stretching, pressing into the ridges of his fingerprints and the creases in his skin.
"Marvelous," he said, and the symbiote's delight sparkled through his hand and halfway up his arm. "You are the most beautiful thing in this universe, do you know that?"
"Pleep!" It rocked back and forth in a way that suggested without words, oh, you. Go on.
"You're infinite shapes and textures. Harder than steel and softer than clouds. Everything that a body is except the bones and the skin. You don't need them—you're the essence of what it is to be organic without the artifices of structure and containment. You are pure, undiluted life."
"Pulk?"
"Yes, you are."
The symbiote rumbled contentedly. The next piece of chocolate was farther away, so it sucked Eddie's hand in to drag him along as it moved on to the next one.
"Angels are usually depicted as humans with halos. But they used to be portrayed as terrifying creations. Great wheels, hundreds of eyes, three heads, many wings. I always preferred those angels." Eddie scooted forward and leaned further onto the table to give the symbiote more room to drag his arm around. "It seemed to me that a God who was so far above His creations as to be nigh on incomprehensible should send messengers that didn't make sense to humans. Messengers so profoundly resplendent that the human mind can only resort to terror in the face of their majesty. Can anything truly call itself divine if it doesn't need to say 'be not afraid' when revealing itself to mere mortals?"
"Ploo!" The symbiote stretched out a single lumpy oily tendril to squish affectionately against Eddie's forehead, and then slide down to one of his eyes so it could slip around inside and pass a thought to his mind.
He smiled. "Good idea. Maybe fewer innocents would scream at the sight of us when we show up to save them if we lead off like that."
The symbiote slipped out of his head. He caught the tendril in his free hand and planted a kiss on it. It slipped between his lips and teeth and poked his tongue before withdrawing the rest of the way.
Eddie settled back down on his arm. "'We are Venom. Be not afraid—unless you're guilty.'"
The symbiote had stretched Eddie's arm as far as it reasonably could without casually rearranging his bone structure. It snatched up the last few square and circle pieces of chocolate like a frog catching a fly with its tongue.
"Nothing on this world deserves to be called 'angelic' more than you," Eddie said. "You are an incomparable, incomprehensible beauty."
With a soft "blup," the symbiote regurgitated Eddie's hand. It left a heart-shaped piece of chocolate in his palm.
Grinning, Eddie nearly popped it in his mouth; but then stopped, carefully set it upright between his teeth, and crooked his finger at the symbiote in a come here gesture.
"Vrrr!" With an excited lunge, it splatted its whole mass against Eddie's face. Venom's fangs sank into the chocolate heart.
