Summary: Lorenz returns to Garrag Mach, along with the rest of his class, but the person he wants to see the most isn’t there. He goes to the ruined cathedral and sends a rare prayer to the goddess, wishing for Sylvain to return to him. And then, he feels a familiar prickling sensation against his skin...

Heavy footsteps echoed through the empty cathedral as Lorenz walked past the pews. He stopped in front of the large pile of debris at the altar, and he let out a sigh as he shook his head. It seemed like it was only yesterday that the Empire had attacked Garrag Mach and plunged Fódlan into a bloody, devastating war. Lorenz was happy to be reunited with Claude and the rest of his classmates from the Alliance, but there was one person that Lorenz wanted to see more than anyone…and he wasn’t here.

Some of their classmates from the Kingdom, and even some who had defected from the Empire, had managed to show up to join the fight against the Empire, but Sylvain had not been one of them. Lorenz’s heart hurt, as he had been much too hopeful that the distance between them would finally be closed on this day. He took in a deep, calming breath and let it out slowly as his eyes slipped shut and he folded his hands together, offering up a rare prayer to the Goddess for the safety of the one that he loved most…

Lorenz’s eyes shot open as a familiar prickling sensation coursed through his arm, and he looked down, barely able to hear himself think over the roaring of his heartbeat in his ears. He sucked in a sharp breath as dark words in familiar handwriting slowly appeared on his skin:

Turn around, babe.

Lorenz didn’t think twice as he spun around so fast that his long hair ended up stuck to his face. He moved a hand up to brush it away, but someone else’s hand got there first, and Lorenz’s eyes welled up with tears when his hair was pushed behind his ear, revealing Sylvain’s smiling face.

“Sylvain!” Lorenz’s prim and proper demeanor was thrown out the window as he jumped into the arms of his lover, his soulmate, and he was lifted into the air. Sylvain laughed as he spun him around, and Lorenz leaned down to press his forehead against his.

“Long time no see, Lorenz!” Sylvain said with a beaming smile. It was not fake nor teasing, but instead a smile that displayed genuine, authentic happiness. The fact that such a beautiful smile was directed at him of all people caused tears to well up in Lorenz’s eyes.

“Oh yes, it has been far too long, my darling.” Lorenz sniffed as a few tears rolled down his face, and Sylvain cupped his face, gently wiping them away with his thumbs.

“Yeah, I know what you mean. I missed you.” Sylvain’s voice was soft, as he ran his hand through Lorenz’s hair, “I really like what you’ve done with your hair, babe.”

Lorenz chuckled as he took Sylvain’s hand and entwined their fingers together. “Thank you. I missed you too, Sylvain. The longing in my heart while we were apart all these years was almost unbearable to deal with at times.”

“You’re always so dramatic, Lorenz.” Sylvain laughed when Lorenz pouted at him, and he lifted Lorenz’s hand to his mouth to place a tender kiss on his knuckles. “But I guess I am too, because I felt the same way.”

Sylvain gazed deep into Lorenz’s eyes, before finally closing the distance between them and pressing their lips together in a deep, tender kiss. Lorenz had almost forgotten how sweet Sylvain’s kiss tasted, and a warmth that he had not felt in a long, long time erupted within his chest when he felt Sylvain smile against his lips. When Lorenz pulled away, he finally blurted out those three little words that he had been longing to say to Sylvain for all this time.

“I love you!”

Lorenz stared at a slack-jawed Sylvain with wide eyes after they both spoke the same words at the same time. After a few moments of silence, Lorenz started to chuckle, while Sylvain covered his mouth as he snorted, and they both dissolved into a fit of laughter.

“We really do belong together, Lorenz,” Sylvain said when he composed himself, and he set Lorenz back onto his feet. Lorenz nodded in agreement as he wrapped his arms around Sylvain, pulling him close as he relished in the warmth of his lover’s embrace.

“Indeed, my beautiful rose,” Lorenz said, pausing to kiss Sylvain briefly, “Please, never leave my side. I won’t let this damned war tear us apart again.”

Sylvain chuckled and cupped Lorenz’s face. “I will, always and forever. I never felt like I was really home back in Gautier territory, but now that I’m with you…I feel like I’m actually home. I’d fight the entire Empire myself if they so much as entertained the idea of taking you from me.”

“...I’m not sure if I would bet on you there, darling,” Lorenz said. He was so happy to hear those words, but he couldn’t help but take the opportunity to tease him.

Sylvain winced and let out a defeated sigh as he rubbed at the back of his neck. “Ouch, thanks for the vote of confidence, babe.”

“Well, we will just have to fight them together.” Lorenz brushed the hair from Sylvain’s face as the latter laughed and pressed their foreheads together.

“Yeah, you’re right. No one could stop us then. I love you, Lorenz.”

“I love you too, Sylvain.”

Their lips came together in another passionate kiss, and they spent the rest of the night reigniting the love that they had still held for each other, even after such a long time apart. Lorenz had spent the last five years in Gloucester territory, but it was here, wrapped in the arm of his one true love, where he truly felt that he was home.

2. What are your favorite things about the ship?

Two morons making an ass of themselves to each other and everyone else! While drinking fancy Seiros tea. Tall leggy armor-clad horse boys with hot/cold color schemes, visually appealing. Totally opposing attitudes to nobility duties and expectations and yet somehow they fit well with each other.

3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

It's such a rarepair that I don't think there are popular opinions, let alone unpopular ones, haha.

Mermaid AU Sylorenz

Lorenz did not release Sylvain's arm until they had swum far enough that the old shipwreck was out of sight-- and even then he didn't move far, merely swimming around to float in front of Sylvain with his fiercest glare in place, amethyst tail swaying back and forth to keep Sylvain from pushing past him as he scolding, “What were you thinking going in there?!”

The shipwreck was surrounded by box jellyfish and occasionally home to a colossal squid-- as everyone at their reef knew-- so hearing that Sylvain had gone there alone had made ice cold fear shoot through Lorenz, which was only now fading as he watch Sylvain squim under his glare.

“I was getting you this, since you like human stuff so much,” Sylvain said begrudgingly, face as red as his tail as he held up a small brown box stuck shut with algae.

What was your favorite piece of writing of yours this year? What was your favorite piece of writing of someone else's (published or fanfic) this year?

My stuff:

I've been pointing to Modern Loneliness a lot in year-end stuff, and I am proud of it. It's a multi-chapter Sylorenz mystery neighbor romance that I really liked writing.

But also want to shout out a soft and gentle light, part two of a claurenz space au I keep toying with and enjoying very much. Space thief Claude, dancer android Lorenz, this one was very plotless smut but I love the world and will return.
