ok so.

the sunglasses in this picture

are vintage, baby !

this is a reselling off Etsy, but they're the Oakley E Wires! (I'd have to look at the sides to see what generation lol). very European, super y2k, super sports luxe!

while they're sadly not milf glasses (PLEASE get some Prada George. for all of us) they are a pair full of history!

this style came out in 1992 and slowly evolved until it was discontinued in 2005 (according to the O-Review website there was also a collectors edition that came out in 2013). It's a metal version of the eye jackets aka one of Oakley's most ICONIC frames

Before we get to that though, when Oakley started as a company, they were a motocross grip-selling company (the plastic they used, called Unobtainium, is what the rubbery part of Oakley glasses are mostly made of). Over time, Oakley shifted its main market from motocross gear to shield visors to shield sunglasses. These are what the first Oakley 'sunglasses' look like ->

The pair on the right was made from a motocross visor shield, electrical tape, and a coat hanger. The pair on the left is a style called the Eyeshades, the first commercially sold version of the extremely popular modern-day Sutros.

The Sutros are an iconic sports frame and have been extremely ingrained in sports culture since they were put on the market. However, they weren't suited for ALL of sports culture. This is where the Eye Jackets come in. (We'll come back to the Sutros and Eyeshades later)

I'm sure you've all heard of Michael Jordan but did you know that Michael Jordan LOVED Oakleys? He was actually on the board of directors for a while and wore Oakleys all the time, specifically, he wore the Eye Jackets (and similar styles)

if you scroll back up to the pair George is wearing, they look very similar to these! And for good reason! The E Wire is essentially the thin metal frame version of the Eye Jackets.

Ok, cool. 90s and early 2000s fashion. very y2k and we know they come from Oakley so they're sporty. epic. awesome, even. but what's sports luxe? Why European if Oakley's an American brand and why do we care about these now?

Sports Luxe is basically a style that's based on athletic gear with a sophisticated undertone. Think leggings and tracksuits. Think Bella Hadid or Billie Eilish. Think Adidas or Nike or Lululemon. That's sports luxe babey (also called athleisure). When you have a basketball game at 12 and a photoshoot at 2. That's the vibe.

Now, full disclaimer, I am American so ig I can't really speak on if the recent spark in this trend started in Europe but from my viewpoint it totally did. It's big, it's bold, it's based in streetwear, it's casual but it's not lazy, and it flexes wealth subtly which is much more common among European celebs than American celebs and influencers (imo).

We can also go back to those Eyeshades from earlier and see that those became popular in Europe through cycling. Greg Lemond debuted the Eyeshades in the Tour de France 1984 making Oakleys a huge hit in Europe. This eventually progressed and made Oakleys an iconic 80s sunglass brand.

Trends did what trends do and the Eyeshades eventually took a backseat from mainstream fashion and instead became popular among surfers mostly. The trend that replaced it, was the Oakley Eye Jackets courtesy of MJ23 himself.

Glossing over 20 years of sunglass history, trends did what trends do and the 80s shield style and 90s/2000s eye jacket style of sunglasses faded into the back of closets. Until now.

The biggest modern name in bringing back this trend (via sunglasses at least) is Balenciaga. (disclaimer: I'm not getting into the whole thing with their brand, I'm sure you heard about it, I don't support the brand etc etc I'm talking from purely a fashion/trends viewpoint, which what I'm talking about was started by them prior to everything)

These are some of the most high-fashion sunglasses on the market right now.

fun, right? and maybe a little familiar..................... oh wait of course those are just smooth versions of the Oakley Eye Jackets. History repeats itself.

All in all, trends move in circles, fashion mistakes repeat themselves, and this will be Dream and George in denim on denim on denim suits next time they go somewhere fancy (REAL NOT CLICKBAIT)

12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?

Quickly, let me preface this section with the fact that I myself am white.

From the jump I’ve always thought Edd was not white, or mixed race, and had parents that were either first or second gen immigrants. And that it’s not very apparent in canon because his family assimilated really hard. I always felt this helped to explain a bit of his cultural sensitivities while at the same time adding some more depth to the intergenerational dynamics. Previously I’d imagined him as Filipino/white and more recently I’ve written him as mestizo/korean/white. I like seeing lots of other takes on this in the fandom throughout the years, like somewhat recently eddbedandeddy’s post that he could be MENA like his VA or gettingfrilly mentioning they see him as racially ambiguous. Recently the phrase “ancestral fruitcake” has been incessantly plaguing my mind (‘Tis the season/ is or is this not a hilarious stand in for the f-word slur please discuss among yourselves people) but that to me indicates that at least one line of his family is hwite.

Keeping on theme, I really cannot resist coding Eddy’s family as stereotypically dysfunctional Italian American (and let me elaborate on my opening statement by stating this identity IS my circus my monkeys 🙈). Memelzebub described his parents as Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman in the movie Matilda and I agree hard on that!

14. Assign a fashion aesthetic to this character.

Okay I looooove playing dress up with these guys so let’s get into it. I envision these more as they get into their teens and older.

Edd: a bit of grandpa (chunky thrifted sweaters), casual 90’s/00’s streetwear (long sleeve quarter zips, sneakers), specialized outdoorsy gear (like 100 pocket cargo pants, swishy pull over rain jackets) and he’s always kinda cold (puffer vests, layers, etc) uhhh and he still wears outrageously colored and patterned socks. I like to imagine he’d expand his hat selection. He prefers to dress practically and comfortably.

Eddy: SO MUCH STYLE POTENTIAL. He likes fashion so I could see him playing up lots of styles and having lots of phases through his teens and into adulthood. Other than 70s inspired fashion, I’d be lying if I didn’t shout out butch lesbians as a fashion inspiration. In high school I often imagine him wearing more casual 00’s clothing - baggy jeans and long jorts and skater sneakers and polos and bowler shirts. And then as he gets older he leans into more “slutty 70s” men’s fashion. I think for loungewear he has a huge selection of dramatic robes and kaftans like some old Hollywood diva.

25. What was your first impression of this character? How about now?

Edd: idk this is classic but I had a crush on him as a kid. What can I say. Now I don’t have a crush on him but find him incredibly interesting and complex and fun to think about (: I think I always liked that he was a big nerd with sort of odd interests because I related to it. Now I relate most to his unmedicated anxiety 🙃

Eddy: also classic response, I found him grating and annoying during the original air time. But I didn’t flat out hate him or anything. I found his voice interesting and he was funny! Now I love love love Eddy. I only watched BPS in like 2013 and man did that really shift things for me in terms of being emotionally invested in this pink cube. What a guy!

Ok let’s start with Daisy:

she plays electric guitar but doesn’t rlly tell anybody so when Hazel went over her house she just pulled out an electric guitar, did a kickass riff and Hazel was just like: what.

defo listens to rlly loud thrash music that would break her eardrums

but is also a clairo stan

she relates to class of 2013 on a PERSONAL LEVEL

her style is either light academia or like cottagecore lesbian??

her room is messy but she knows where everything is and refuses to clean it because “it helps her work”

it doesn’t

has posters over every inch of her walls but they don’t make any sense because there will be like an ominous detective poster right next to a saiki k poster

they just randomly started kissing each other and nobody questioned it

Lavinia did start wondering why Kitty stopped sleeping in her own bed and would wake up in Beanies

George and Lavinia:

Lavinia gets a lot of shit for dating a non white man obvs

they get through it tho

they stay up rlly late debating their existence in the universe and politics

This annoys everybody except Hazel and Alexander who think it’s pretty cute

When Lavinia worked at Starbucks George would order a drink everybody but she would make sure to pronounce his name wrong every time

George loved her for that

They’re annoying at road trips cuz if you pass them the aux you better prepare for horrible renditions of Taylor swift songs

They once turned up to the school dance with George wearing a dress and Lavinia wearing a suit

they enjoy breaking gender norms cuz who doesn’t

they paint each other’s nails

George leaves random post it notes for Lavinia to find when he stays over at the dorm

If the other girls or Alexander find them they get so confused

Alexander would find one and be like:

“George why are you confessing your love to me? I have a girlfriend??”

“Ohhhh this is for Lavinia. Got it.”

In 2013, a friend and I decided to try our luck and see what all the Cronut hype was about. We arrived at Dominique Ansel in Soho at 7:30 a.m.: A decade later, I couldn’t tell you what flavor Cronut we had, but I do remember the roughly 40 customers in line, a handful of those who even brought folding chairs.

Croissant innovation has continued: These days, though, waiting in lines for the next it-dessert has become my job — particularly since bakeries increasingly have as much status as hot restaurants, in part because more people can afford a luxe pastry than a four-course tasting menu.

Any New Yorker will tell you that lines in general are almost never worth it. In a city with a plethora of dining options, there’s always somewhere else to go. Onetime hip bakeries like Sullivan Street Bakery, Magnolia Bakery, and Arcade (RIP) may have long existed in the city, but in the last three years, something new has been happening, making more people take interest than ever before. Even the James Beards are paying attention: 2023 is the first that it’s adding an outstanding bakery category to its awards list.

Pandemic pop-ups pushed the needle for bakeries. When COVID closed restaurants, pop-ups exploded as a way to fill that niche. Baked goods — a combination of take-out-friendly structures and a salve in a sad time — were ready for the taking.

“I think people were looking for a little bit of pleasure or just a pick-me-up — a little bit of light in all of the darkness,” said Autumn Moultrie, co-owner of microbakery Back Alley Bread. “Microbakery” is a term that’s come to refer to online operations, as opposed to a physical location; Back Alley Bread, which began in 2020 on Instagram, signed on to open its first storefront this week at 53 Rockaway Avenue, between Sumpter and Marion streets, in Bed-Stuy.

Though some reports have suggested that pastry chefs are going extinct at NYC restaurants, in truth they are just evolving. Fandom has outlasted the onset of the pandemic, she says: “Pastry places are becoming the destination, not the afterthought, or just end of the meal.” Moultrie says that for Back Alley, the secret to its success was staying nimble, and not just pigeonholing its goodies into one niche — selling angel donuts, Frito pie, and Jamaican patties all under the same roof.
