nobody in this fandom talks enough about andreil’s “you came” “you called” moment and it’s a fucking TRAVESTY
for reference, i’m talking about the 20th of january, right after wymack tells neil he’s going to be vice-captain the next year. neil ends up calling andrew, and andrew drops everything to come and get him.
even at surface level, it’s so sweet. but y’all know me, nothing is EVER just surface deep.
this moment is significant for two reasons. one, because it really showcases the level of trust neil has for andrew. if you remember, neil wasn’t even aware that he was calling andrew until andrew started talking to him. even his subconscious mind, the mind that is so set on survival and safety at any cost, trusted andrew to protect him. he felt threatened and his instinct was to call andrew.
now for my favorite reason why this scene is the best: because andrew didn’t have to go back for neil.
but aster, you might be asking, wasn’t neil going to run if andrew didn’t go get him?
yes, he was. but nowhere in their deal did they agree that andrew would keep neil from running. andrew’s only job was to protect neil, keeping him at PSU was never part of the deal. andrew never had to go back and get neil, even by his own moral code.
and they hadn’t even started their relationship yet! there was literally no reason why andrew, who everyone thinks cares about nothing and nobody, would turn around on the highway to keep one of his teammates from running away. none.
but he still did it. he didn’t have to, he wasn’t obligated because of a deal. he chose to go help neil.
i think it’s one of those moments that really shows just how much andrew cares. when andrew shows up to get him, neil says that andrew doesn’t care about what’s happening in his head, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. if andrew really didn’t care, he wouldn’t have gone back. he would have kept driving and left neil to figure it out for himself. but he didn’t, and that’s so fucking important.
TLDR: they’re in love and i love that they love each other
EDIT: i am now aware that like half of this is wrong. i wrote it at like 3AM and didn’t remember any of it. i’m not deleting it because so many people enjoyed it, but pls be aware that ya boy is a little stupid and didn’t fact check before posting. (ik i’m wrong now pls stop yelling @ me <3 )

ok guys so i started thinking about Andrew and everything he went through and now i can't stop
I work with kids, right? I spend pretty much every day taking care of seven year old babies. I think you can see where I'm going.
It's still just so absolutely heartbreaking that Andrew was being hurt and used at seven years old. I spend my days taking care of seven year old boys and they're just... they're so small? they aren't even really people yet, they're still practically toddlers. at seven, they still cry when their mothers drop them off at school and need help getting their jackets zipped. They can't reach things on the third shelf yet. they believe in santa and the tooth fairy and they trust everything adults say just because they're adults.
What I'm trying to say is: how could anyone try and hurt those kids? i genuinely can't comprehend how someone could look at those little babies and hurt them.
i feel like we all read that Andrew was seven when it started and... yeah, it horrified us, yeah it was so so young, but we didn't really get it. how could we? most of us aren't around kids very often. we hear "I was seven" and it's awful, it's sickening, but we don't really have any sort of point of reference for just how young that really is.
He couldn't tie his own shoes yet. He was still learning how to brush his teeth correctly. he had to sit in a booster seat. he probably hadn't even lost his first baby tooth yet.
Andrew was still just a baby. He was so, so young.
I don't know how to finish this post, honestly. I just finally started to understand how young seven years old is, and I wanted to give you all a reference point as well.

consider, for just a moment, the first time neil gets drunk with the foxes.
i think it wouldn’t happen until the end of his second year, but when it does, nobody was prepared.
so, neil is partying with his foxes. it’s probably a bonding night or something, just them in a dorm. i doubt he’d let himself get drunk with strangers around, but he trusts the foxes not to hurt him and he trusts andrew not to let him do anything stupid.
shockingly, neil is a massive lightweight. he rarely ever drinks, so in reality it’s not that surprising, but somehow none of the foxes expected him to get completely pissed off of like three beers.
neil, as it turns out, says the most batshit outta pocket things when he’s drunk. i’m talking bringing up his traumatic childhood in casual conversation and then immediately afterwards asking allison to braid his hair or something. just completely random and a little horrifying.
eventually, andrew decides that it’s time for neil to switch to water, but when he tries to hand neil a glass, he just says “oh, fuck off, aaron.”
andrew tries to ask what the fuck neil just called him, but neil tries to punch him before he can.
that’s right, just tries to full on deck andrew.
andrew finds the whole thing hilarious, because 1. even if andrew hadn’t caught neil’s arm, the punch wouldn’t have hurt at all. neil was moving too slowly and he probably would have missed anyway, and 2. because the first (and only) time neil ever mistook the twins, it didn’t end with him trying to kiss aaron, it ended with him trying to punch andrew in the face. neil’s gut reaction to seeing aaron is just punching him in the fucking face, and if that’s not fucking hilarious i don’t know what is.
anyway, andrew is now holding neil’s arm. neil just blinks, looks at him for a second, and goes “drew? when did you get here?”
andrew, now trying very hard not to laugh, is all like “time for bed” and drags neil back to their dorm.
neil has no memory of any of this happening until allison shows him the video she took.
andrew assures him that it was funny, but he still uses it to win arguments for a month afterwards.

forget “team edward” and “team jacob”, are you team “neil has a really creepy smile” or team “neil actually has a totally normal smile but he’s convinced himself that it’s awful”?
me personally, i’m team “his smile is maybe a little creepy but not nearly as bad as he thinks and andrew finds it completely beautiful. he doesn’t understand how neil could not like it, and he hates how neil always covers it up. it’s beautiful, just like every part of him is beautiful, because it’s his smile.”

Andrew: I want nothing and nobody. Life is an endless cycle of nothingness and loneliness and I am just a cog in a much larger machine. The only escape is my eventual death and I have long since accepted this fact.
Neil: Walks in dressed like a homeless person, lies about everything, starts fights with everyone, and almost dies at least once a week.
Andrew:
Andrew: I take it back, gimme that one.

okay, we all remember the baltimore reunion, right?
when andrew says “you’re not going anywhere”? when andrew tells neil to stay? yknow, when neil let’s himself really become neil josten?
that whole pivotal scene?
what if i told you they had that exact conversation months earlier? before they meant anything to each other.
this might be something everyone knows, and i’m super sorry if i’m just being stupid, but i haven’t seen anything ab this yet so idk.
anyway.
at the end of TFC, right after seth dies, andrew gives neil a key. we all remember this, of course. “you gave me a key and called it home.” it’s an important line, and it’s an important moment.
but do you remember what andrew said?
“I know what I'm doing. I knew what I was agreeing to when I took Kevin's side. I knew what it could cost us and how far I'd have to go. Understand? You aren't going anywhere. You're staying here.”
“You aren’t going anywhere.”
we all know by now that this is the moment neil josten becomes more than a name. neil says it himself; he’s not going to be anyone else. he’s planning to die as neil josten. this is the moment he lets himself be neil josten.
skip ahead a whole seven months to march. neil josten is dead, and nathaniel wesninski is sitting on the floor of a hotel room. he’s asking, begging to stay, to be the person he was again.
he wants to be neil josten again.
and you know what andrew says?
“You aren’t going anywhere… You’re staying with us. If they try to take you away they will lose.”
!!!
like, i know we all love to call aftg a dumpster fire of a book (i do it too, dw) but we need to talk about how absolutely GENIUS Miss Nora was when she wrote it.
sure, neil is canonically both 5’3 and 5’5, but guys.
im just so obsessed.

Mean Girls fusion. Andrew is Regina George. Enough said.
And there you go! This is a very very small fraction of the fics I've read this year, so obviously I have more if anyone's interested.
Go forth and read !

hc that Andrew and Renee are huge gossips.
not with anyone else, just with each other.
think about it. ik it seems ooc, but think about it.
Renee’s whole thing is that the ‘sweet, innocent christian girl’ she acts like isn’t the whole truth. Andrew, in canon, is one of the very few people who gets to see the rest of her. it’s not unfair to assume that means more than just the violence. i think he would also get to see the less confident side of her, the worried and uncertain side. i think that also means he listens to her complaints about the other Foxes.
and Andrew? he loves secrets. he spends most of the series dealing in secrets. i think he would absolutely gossip in the basement with his bestie after they beat the shit outta each other. plus, Renee is one of the very few people Andrew actually trusts. he’s a mean little shit (complimentary) and he would absolutely rip people to shreds while Renee listens.

Andrew isn’t heartless, I think we all know it by now but I’m going to say it again.
Andrew isn’t heartless, Andrew is hurt. Andrew has been breaking apart since he was seven years old, and he’s been shown time and time again that feelings won’t change a thing. When he said ‘please’ and it did nothing. When he saw bruises and tears from Aaron but she’s my mother and she loves me and it’s okay Andrew, it’s okay it doesn’t even hurt. When those men found his cousin, his caring and soft cousin, and they hurt him. They hurt him and Aaron’s pleading did nothing but Andrew’s fists sure as hell did.
Andrew isn’t heartless, but he’s almost convinced himself that he is. Twelve years of hiding it all has dulled things, his meds blanketing them where his feigned indifference doesn’t.
And then.
And then he sees a boy with dark hair and a darker past. And there’s a flicker, a little push under the apathy that swaddles his mind.
And another push when he meets eyes the blue of a glacier.
Another when the rabbit becomes the wolf for the world to see.
Another. Another. Another.
And he feels the slab of concrete he’s laid over his emotions start to crack, feels the little fissures as they spread with every new secret he learns about this boy who is so much more than he thought.
And he chalks it up to the medicine, the little pills that change his world so drastically.
But the meds are long gone and there’s still a boy, now with hair like a flame, and he still feels the pushing and cracking and crumbling.
Only it goes so much faster with the medicine gone.
A shove when the boy threw himself in the line of fire for Andrew’s sake.
A deep fissure when his phone rings because the boy chose not to run.
A million bits of debris falling with every kiss, but no he doesn’t want this, he can’t feel this because that means he has to feel everything else but he can’t bring himself to stop, he thinks maybe making himself stop when they both want it might actually kill him.
Cracks and pushes and blue blue blue eyes and letting go of a promise and then-
And then a dirty duffle bag full of equipment, an abandoned phone with a message saying 0, and the slab of concrete crumbles all at once like was never even there.
And Andrew feels it all, feels his heart shatter which should be impossible because he thought it was in enough tiny shards already but there it is and he might not be able to survive it and Neil is gone Neil is gone Neil is gonegonegonegone
And maybe this is what grief feels like, because Andrew didn’t know this boy a year ago but now the thought of being without him is more than he can possibly bear and-
A phone call, and suddenly Neil’s three hours away.
Two hours.
One.
And they’re in the same city but the distance is still too far.
Fifty feet.
Ten.
Five.
One.
And- there.
Andrew isn’t heartless. Andrew isn’t heartless, because his heart is a boy with fiery hair and a personality to match. His heart is a pair of eyes like ice chips that saw through it all, saw down to the very core of Andrew and didn’t flinch. His heart is Neil Abram Josten, and maybe that’s not entirely true but Neil helped him find it again.
Andrew isn’t heartless. He’s not even close.

In a kinder world, Mary Hatford would never have married Nathan Wesninski.
Or, maybe she would have. Maybe in a kinder world, Nathan would have learned to be kind, too.
In the real world, Mary knew that no amount of kindness could show Nathan how to be a human. Even the kindest world could not suck the hatred out of his blood.
In a kind world, learning that she was pregnant with Nathan’s son would have been a blessing, not a curse. Giving birth to Abram would have been the happiest moment of her life. Holding her son for the first time, she would have felt nothing but joy and love, hope for the future he would have.
In the real world, Mary was terrified as she looked into her baby’s blue eyes. She knew that the road ahead of them would not be an easy one, knew that her son was not likely to live to adulthood. In the real world, Mary looked down at her son, so innocent and small and absolutely clueless to the monstrous world he’d just been born into, and she cried.
In a kind world, little Abram would never have had to learn how to wield a knife. Mary would never know what it was like to wash a man’s blood off of her eight-year-old son’s face. In a kinder world, her son was allowed to be a child.
In the real world, Abram watched a man die for the first time at five years old. At seven, Nathan bought the boy a dog and then made Abram help him slaughter it. In the real world, her son had taken a man’s life by the time he turned nine.
In a kinder world, They never would have needed to run. Abram would never be in enough danger for that. In a kind world, he would have been allowed to grow up like every other little boy. He would get to run around at the park and scrape his knees and yell as loudly as he could. He would be able to call as much attention to himself as he wanted, and he would never have to worry that death was coming for him.
In the real world, Mary woke him in the middle of the night three weeks after his tenth birthday. In the real world, she either had to take him away or watch him die. It wasn’t a hard choice to make.
In the real world, they ran and they ran and they ran. They could never stop running, not unless they wanted to stop breathing. In the real world, her son lives but he never gets to be alive.
In a kind world, Seattle is just a city. In a kind world, maybe they take a family trip there. Maybe Abram argues with another tourist over something stupid. Maybe they go out to dinner or take pictures at all of the popular sights. Maybe in a kinder world, Seattle is beautiful.
In the real world, Mary can barely remember Seattle. All she can remember is pain and fear and the need to get as much distance between Abram and Nathan as she can. In the real world, she never saw the metal pipe coming.
In a kind world, Mary lives a long life. She watches Abram graduate high school and then college, watches him play exy for years until an injury forces him to retire. She watches him fall in love with the strangest boy she’s ever met, a blond even shorter than she is who rarely smiles and loves to talk about the zombie apocalypse.
In a kind world, Mary is there when Abram gets married. She lives long enough to meet her two grandchildren and a handful of the many cats Abram and Andrew adopt. She lives a long life, and when death takes her, she isn’t afraid.
In the real world, fate isn’t so kind. In the real world, Abram still grows up. He graduates high school, then college. He plays exy for years. He even falls in love, gets married, adopts two kids and an unreasonable number of cats.
But in the real world, Mary isn’t there for any of it. In the real world, Mary doesn’t even get to see Abram turn 18.
In the real world, Mary Hatford dies at age 42, desperate and afraid on a cold stretch of California beach. In the real world, she doesn’t get a happy ending.

I’m obsessed with the way you write about Mary !!! u wont find many aftg fans who will speak of her very unfair situation with such tenderness and care 🤧🤧
omg thank you !!!!!
mary hatford has such a special place in my heart, she’s such a complex character.
like—she loves her son so much, she was willing to give up everything she had just for the chance to keep him safe. she died for him !!
but also, she wasn’t a good mother to neil. like, at all. i feel like a lot of the fandom loves to demonize her because they think the only alternative is turning her into this misunderstood angel of a woman who never did anything wrong but it’s not that simple !! that’s what i find so compelling, nothing about mary’s character is simple. literally nothing about her is just simple black and white, there’s so much nuance to her that we never get to see in the books.
she’s SO interesting to me because like—she loved her son so much that she would die for him, she did absolutely everything she could for him, and it wasn’t enough. she kept neil away from his father for years, but she did so much damage to him in the process.
ok i know im rambling but if you get me started on mary hatford i do not stop. anyway.
there’s just so much nuance behind who mary is, why she did the things she did, all of it. i adore writing about this woman
