We’re on our way to Build A Bear! This is his first time visiting, and considering he is one I figured he should go and see his original “home”. It might be busy so we’ll see if I can manage to get any pictures

A different type of family tree: Applying family history concepts to animation
Tumblr media
"Modern Cartoon Family Tree 2.0" by AlexB9598w
This family tree is unlike any other tree I've seen before. I thought I'd do a fun one this week. It's not focused on a specific character or on the draw of family, the latter which I wrote about before. Instead, this shows the connection between people and their different shows. It all starts out with Donovan Cook and moves down from there. I think this tree is interesting in that it shows the connection between these shows. However it is also, you could say, limiting. I say that because it doesn't exactly focus on the interconnection between people. I know that, for instance, that Rebecca Sugar and Ian Jones-Quartey are married, but this chart only shows them as writers. Similarly, I know about the controversy which enveloped Twelve Forever, leading to the end of the show, and Shadi Petosky, a trans woman, becoming the executive producer of the show and having her own project on the way. Since I don't know most of these shows, I'm narrowing it down to the shows I do know and working back from there. Let's start with one of my favorite shows, Cleopatra in Space, and focusing on the executive producer of that show, Doug Langdale.
Reprinted from my Genealogy in Popular Culture WordPress blog. Originally published on August 28, 2020.
Tumblr media
I then expanded this by looking at the companies behind each one of these productions, and it starts to look more like a bit of a tree, showing the parent companies and production companies. Keep in mind that Sony Pictures Television, as of 2002, owns both Columbia divisions, so the chart would look a little different now. Additionally, DreamWorks is now owned by Universal Pictures, a division of NBC Universal, which is, itself, owned by Comcast. So, the chart would look different today.
Tumblr media
Now, I wanted to expand this a little more, so I originally wanted to look at all those who have been listed as being on the Cleopatra in Space crew (herein called Cleo Crew), apart from Doug Langdale. Since that was 40 people, I narrowed it down to storyboarders, which consisted of 18 people in total: Aaron Brewer,  Abigail Davies, Adam Temple, Andrew Marshel, Bob Suarez, Chris Ybarra, Derek Thompson, Eugene Huang, Gary Ye, Ingrid Kan, Kevin Slawinski, Laurianne Uy, Samantha Suyi Lee, Scooter Tidwell, Thalia Tomlinson, Topher Parnell, and Wei Li. From there, I broke it down by the overlapping shows that they had worked on. [1] I ended up narrowing it down mainly to DreamWorks shows, as you'll see in the chart below:
Tumblr media
We learn a lot from this. For one, Chris Ybarra and Bob Suarez had worked together and/or on two of the same shows: Big Mouth and Turbo Fast. Additionally, Adam Temple and Wei Li had both worked on Carmen Sandiego, while Abigail "Abby" Davies and Laur Uy had worked on Spirit Riding Free. We also find that Bob Suarez and Laur Uy worked on the same show too. Even more fascinating is the fact that ALL of these productions were on Netflix and most, apart from Carmen Sandiego, were tied to DreamWorks. We can conclude that many of the storyboarders probably knew each other and/or had worked with one another in the past. If we combine this with the information about Doug Langdale I showed earlier, it would mean that Langdale worked on the same team as Bob Suarez and Laur Uy on The Adventures of Puss and Boots. These connections were likely part of the reason they were hired in the first place.
In sum, this is a unique family tree of sorts, which shows connections between those in the animation industry. You can see who the "parents" (like DreamWorks and Houghton Mifflin) are and who the "children" (like Bob Suarez and Laur Uy) are as well. This sort of analysis is much better than the "modern cartoon family tree" shown at the beginning of that post. That post almost treats the connections between individuals as static. I may do another one about LGBTQ animations or something else. We'll see what happens! As always, comments are welcome, as I'm deeply unsure about what I'll write about next.

[1] I also found that Aaron Brewer and Eugene Huang storyboarded Little Big Awesome, which was produced by Amazon Studios and Titmouse, Inc., and that Aaron Brewer and Bob Suarez storyboarded Niko and the Sword of Light, produced by the same groups. Additionally, Frank Squillace directed Jackie Chan Adventures, while Scooter Tidwell was a storyboarder. At the same time, Bob Suarez, Frank Squillace, and Scooter Tidwell storyboarded The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Furthermore, Abigail Davies worked on Cartoon Network's Ben 10, with Scooter Tidwell as a sequence director. Finally, Frank Squillace directed Transformers: Rescue Bots while Thalia Tomlinson worked as an animator for the same show.

🎄Christmas 2023 Part 1
Disclaimer: This post is about our two Christmasses. We celebrated between ourselves on the 21st and then at Eli’s Moms on the 24th-25th. I just figured it would be easier to combine them into one post : )
Tumblr media
In the morning we opened our stockings, and gifts from each-other, my parents, and my friend Leo!
Tumblr media
These are all of the things that I got for Christmas! I am very thankful and grateful for all of the wonderful things I got and can’t wait to use them all!
Tumblr media
What Eli got for Christmas
I also recieved this guy as a Christmas gift from work on the 23rd but I figured that I would just include him in this space too. His name is Terry. He is stuffed with memory foam which makes for a very interesting cuddling experience, he is much harder than I imagined him to be!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After we had our breakfast it was then time to “play” with what we got for the rest of the day! The first thing I tried doing was making a fort with the set I got, which proved incredibly difficult. So I decided to play Paleo Pines instead which is a game I have been following for years and eagerly awaiting it’s release. It’s definately a game that is a lot “harder” than I would usually play – I’m still learning how it works but it was fun : D

This took me literally all day to make, it was so fun
Finally it was time for our special Christmas dinner! Which I look forward to a lot because it is one of the things I miss most from Christmas back in Canada. We have vegan turkey, mashed potatoes, roast potatos, corn in bredding, veggies, and nice bread with it.
Tumblr media
To finish the night off I did a bit of Christmas coloring

On the 24th we were off to Eli’s Moms for the rest of the Christmas celebrations.

I rewatched the Spirit Series and the other Movie.
1. Tv Show: Its an okay Show and instead of T9R I can live with it. Because its respectful to his Original Movie. We have Little refrencenes like Little Creeks Son, the Eagle Symbol and the half Dome, the Designs of the Horses also stay true to the OG Movie, Spirit Jr.‘s two Horse friends remind Me from the Design of Rain & Esperanza. I also like the Relationship between Lucky & Spirit jr. The Friendship between the PALs is also cute. I also like the Turo-Guy, he is very nice. And it kinda makes sense That Spirit Jr. Is more Open minded to Humans because of its Mom Rain But he is also stubborn like his Father.
2. the other Movie. Spirit untamed isn‘t a nessacry Movie, because all feel rushed and is basically the begining of the TV Show But with a different ending. Seriously DreamWorks you can do better. There Are also Little hints to Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron like the Homeland Landscape, the leap of faith, Spirit Jr. running with his herd and the flying Eagle. But it misses the music that Made Spirit just Spirit and that we get no inner Dialog from our main Horse Character, which would make the story a lot more different and it would like the first One, stand out.
3. The Original Movie: A Masterpiece🤩 Emotional and Beautiful. The Songs from Bryan Adams are fantastic, Hans Zimmer really nailed it with his Soundtrack and Matt Damon makes a Good Performance as Narrator. And the Colonel is the Best Antagonist of this Franchise. When I First See This Movie, Disney died for me and I was Now a DreamWorks Fan until This Day.

Spirit was happy to be reunited with his herd, but it wasn't the same. While he belonged with them, something was missing-something that hadn't been missing before. And that is why he went back.
He stood on the hill, his head held high, watching and waiting.
Below the hill, in the corral, the men with ropes saw him, but they didn't chase him. They left him alone and turned their attention to the other horses, the ones they'd tamed. They knew he wasn't meant for them.
But where was she?
His ears pricked at the sound of nearby footsteps. Three girls walked towards the barn-the girl with the yellow mane, the girl with the black mane, and the girl who knew his name.
He neighed. She turned, saw him, and began running up the hill, her long mane flowing behind her.
"Spirit!" she cried, holding out her arms. She pressed her face into his neck. "You came back."
Yes, he'd come back. Despite the joyous reunion with his family, he realized that he now belonged in two worlds-the world of his herd and the world of this girl. She had set him free and he would never forget. For a horse will always remember kindness.
He dipped his head, then bowed his front legs so she could climb onto his back.
"Lucky?" the smaller girl called. "Aren't you going to pick out a horse?"
"I don't have to," his girl called back. "He picked me!"
He waited for her friends to join them, with the horses he now trusted-the one with white spots and the one with the golden coat. He waited for his girl to find her balance, to secure her hands in his mane. "Let's go, Spirit!" she cried.
"Let's go, Boomerang!"
"Let's go, Chica Linda!"
The morning sun warmed the prairie as hearts and hooves beat a wild rhythm.
