The Spanish Accent Rule

Knowing when and where to place an accent on a word in Spanish can be difficult. Did you know there’s a rule that can help. 

All words in Spanish are assigned one of three categories based on the last three syllables of the word. 

If the last syllable is the stressed one:

-and it ends with a vowel or a vowel followed by a “n” or “s” it will have an accent. (This is called agudas)

For example:

Take the word holandés

Break it into its syllables: ho-lan-dés

The stressed syllable is the last one and it ends in an “s” so it has an accent.

A second example of agudas is the word mandar. It has two syllables: man-dar and the last syllable is the stressed one. Since the word ends with “r” it doesn’t have an accent.

If the penultimate syllable is the stressed one:

-and it ends in a consonant other than “n” or “s” (OR if the “s” follows a consonant) it will have an accent. (This is called llanas)

For example, the word álbum is in the llanas group and since its last letter is “m” it has an accent on its stressed syllable, therefore, álbum.

A second example is bíceps, (also part of the llanas group) and its last two letters are “ps” therefore it has an accent on its stressed syllable, hence bíceps.

One last example is abanico. The stressed syllable is “ni” but the word ends in a vowel so it does not have an accent.

If the third from last syllable is the stressed one:

-then it will always have an accent. (This is called esdrújulas)

For example the word música is esdrújula so it has an accent on its stressed syllable making it música.

something i like about learning languages is i feel it allows me to better express myself, even if i’m only writing for me. if i’m writing a song and i feel like i’m laying myself too bare it helps me to switch language even just for a line or two cos it gives me a degree of separation and helps me stop judging myself so harshly

I really like how StarClan is depicted in your rewrite. In one of the field guides, it’s stated that StarClan are not that much wiser than the living cats, and that all they have to guide them is visions of the future, which they can only warn the living cats about. Besides the first arc, I think that’s my favorite depiction of StarClan because it allows them nuance. However, I think your version does improve on that concept by actually implementing it and showing that the Dark Forest and StarClan have ideals that change over time, much like the world of the living. Anyways, keep up the good work!

I feel like canon StarClan is such a waffling, wasted opportunity. It's like the writers are so afraid of unpacking their religious biases that they can't say anything meaningful

StarClan has to control nothing at all because Cat Free Will, but also be a powerful entity that can physically interact with the mortal plane through fighting demons or possessing people

They have to both be wise, prophetic ancestors, but also no smarter than the living cats.

They must be the moral tether preventing the Clan cats from becoming godless heathens, but no more good and kind than a living cat. Bonus points for TBC where StarClan's Love literally burned through Ashfur's Spooky Evil Magic Vines Of Hatred or whatever.

It reminds me a lot of the bitter flavor of protestant Christianity I grew up around, and all the contradictions the adults in my live believed but couldn't articulate. So that's what BB!StarClan is, really. Angels dressed up as god, just as powerful as the living believe they are. Still loving, but prone to anger and self-righteousness. Young, flawed dieties whose sum is greater than its parts.

I'm fascinated by what StarClan could be, in this way.

I do want to chew a bit and that's a literal sentence picture me chewing a nonphysical concept like gum on the lore of Dialtown with how phones are made because there is the intention to create this complexity around Callum and his decisions which I'M ALL FOR IT honestly because last time I saw a talking phone tell about his backstory I was left so shocked I had to take a break so it does make me wonder some things like... What even are the negatives of this? Of course it's an operation so it takes time and effort but even on top of that, what age is the surgery done at? How painful is the recovery? Do you need to undergo multiple surgeries as you grow up and your body grows? Is this even optional or is it a matter of peer pressure? Callum's goofy ass self induced dementia makes everything all the much more questionable because you have a world wide build up because of course <- I have feelings towards USA but no final point. I just super adore these things the story has it's so chewable.

I was thinking about how we don't say "I'm going to kill myself" in Spanish (for the ironic side of saying it, not the real one). If we are going for the joke, "me mato" falls very short, it doesn't have punch. So you have to get into the detail on *how*:

me tiro de un balcón - I jump of a balcony

me corto las venas - I cut my veins

me pego un tiro - I shoot myself

any other you can come up with

Particularly, "me corto las venas" evolved into an excellent one which is: "no sé si cortarme las venas o dejármelas largas" (I don't know if I should cut my veins or let them grow) and I think it sums up pretty well the experience of not knowing what to do with your life.

Languages are weird and idioms are moreso.

In Spanish, there's this idiom "estirar la pata," which literrally translates as "to stretch the leg." What it really means is to die. Kick the bucket, we would say in English. But there's also "estirar las piernas", which literally means "to stretch the legs" (pata and pierna both mean leg but pata is for animals) but actually means to be alive. The closest English equivalent would be "to be alive and kicking."

Two idioms. The only difference is which word for leg you use and whether it's plural, but they mean the opposite thing. And you have to get the whole phrase exactly right or you're speaking nonsense, you can't just say estirar las patas or estirar la pierna.

Some days I think languages are rather stupid. Usually I think this about English, but I guess they all have their moments.

one thing I love is learning other languages. currently, I'm studying spanish, and one of my favorite ways to practice my listening skills is through music.

I've discovered many artists whom I've completely fallen in love with. I grew up listening to a lot of english songs, and for a kid who grew up in the 2000s, pop-punk is like heaven to me.

one of my favorite bands now is shego, a spanish band from spain, and aiko el grupo. I'm also reading some latin writers but in portuguese for now, such as Camila Sosa Villada and Agustina Bazterrica.

my current goal is to read directly in spanish to truly feel the language on another level.
