The Spanish Accent Rule
Knowing when and where to place an accent on a word in Spanish can be difficult. Did you know there’s a rule that can help.
All words in Spanish are assigned one of three categories based on the last three syllables of the word.
If the last syllable is the stressed one:
-and it ends with a vowel or a vowel followed by a “n” or “s” it will have an accent. (This is called agudas)
For example:
Take the word holandés
Break it into its syllables: ho-lan-dés
The stressed syllable is the last one and it ends in an “s” so it has an accent.
A second example of agudas is the word mandar. It has two syllables: man-dar and the last syllable is the stressed one. Since the word ends with “r” it doesn’t have an accent.
If the penultimate syllable is the stressed one:
-and it ends in a consonant other than “n” or “s” (OR if the “s” follows a consonant) it will have an accent. (This is called llanas)
For example, the word álbum is in the llanas group and since its last letter is “m” it has an accent on its stressed syllable, therefore, álbum.
A second example is bíceps, (also part of the llanas group) and its last two letters are “ps” therefore it has an accent on its stressed syllable, hence bíceps.
One last example is abanico. The stressed syllable is “ni” but the word ends in a vowel so it does not have an accent.
If the third from last syllable is the stressed one:
-then it will always have an accent. (This is called esdrújulas)
For example the word música is esdrújula so it has an accent on its stressed syllable making it música.

“Come on!”
I could practically see my brain from how hard I rolled my eyes. My best friends’ constant nagging about this favor I owe him is making the violent urge to punch him grow bigger.
With a heavy sigh, I lift the weighted basket up and onto a table. It was half set up for my sales of the day. “For the last time, Camilo, no!” I yell out in frustration.
“Please! Remember, (Y/N), you owe me a favor.” He pleads. His flirty self leans against the table I was setting up, his smirk growing wide as he observed me. “And you can use this opportunity to wear that pretty dress you got recently.” He winks playfully.
With a scoff, I flick a decorative oven mitt to his face. “You mean the one you got me for my birthday? Yeah, right. How many times do I have to tell you? There is no way I’m going to act like your girlfriend for your family.”
“It’s only for one night!” He argues, grabbing the oven mitt from his face and setting it down.
“You know that’s not how long it’ll last.” I giggle.
With the table now decorated with my hand-crafted oven mitts and scarves laid out, I smile proudly at my effort. Dusting my skirt off, I push Camilo to the side so I could stand my post.
A loud groun slips from his lips. A dramatic teen he was, I found out a long time ago. “I am begging you, mi amor.”
The nickname sends warmth to my cheeks. As much as I know he likes to flirt with me, even as his best friend, it still gets to my heart.
I sigh once more. “How did you even get to this predicament, anyways?” I decided to ask.
He chuckles nervously. “Uh…you know my Ma is pretty adamant about me finding a partner in the future….” He clears his throat before continuing, “but she kept nagging and nagging about it….so I may have blurted out that I’m in a relationship right now.”
“Oh, dios mio, Camilo!” I yell out. “What is wrong with you?!”
He nods with a crooked smile. “Yeah….I know.”
My fingers pinch lightly against the bridge of my nose in frustration. I groan loudly when my mind comes to a decision.
“Fine!”
His eyes light up at my words, excitement clearly rising in his system. “Really?!”
“Yes! I’ll do it. But only. For. One. Night.” I clarify.
“Of course, mi amor!” His hands cup my cheeks, soft lips pressing against one side gently. “See you tonight!”
