Old Southern Galarian words for the first 11 Galarian Pokemon
Tumblr media
This is explained in my kid's, @quillpokebiology , Geography" post, but Galarian has multiple dialects/languages. The Galarian I'm speaking is Hammerlock Galarian, but I grew up in a place that spoke Southern Galarian (specifically from the Crown Tundra). So, here are words for some of the pokemon there.
1. Suanáilte: Sobble
Pronounced "Su-ahn-alt-eh." From the words "Suaracha" meaning insignificant/paltry, and "conáilte" meaning blue.
2. Drúana: Drizzile
Pronounced "Ndrú-ah-nah." From the words "driùchd" meaning "Drizzle" or Dew" and "Gruama" meaning "Sad/depressed/gloomy"
3. Scaoilaghairt: Inteleon
Pronounced "Skeel-leerch." Combination of the words Scaoil, which means shoot and [to] fire, while Laghairt means lizard.
4. Sgôrnín: Scorbunny
Pronounced "Goor-neen." It still translates to Scorbunny, but I'll talk about it anyway. Sgôr is actually Lean (referring to Ballonlean), meaning Score, as sgór in southern Galarian means mountain peak/steep hill/pinnacle, etc. Coinín means bunny.
5. Bunineanach: Scorbunny
Pronounced "Bun-ye-nah." "Bun" means foot while "coineanach" means rabbit.
6. Ciceáluith: Cinderace
Pronounced "Kick-eel-lew-ah." It's a combination of the words ciceál, which means [to] kick, while luith means cinder.
7. Cipínaí: Grookey
Pronounced "Kip-een-ee". Uses the word cipín, which means small stick, [music] stick, and the stick that the bodhrán instrument is played with. The "nai" comes from "moncaí" which just means monkey.
8. Batanaí: Thwackey
Pronounced "Bah-teh-nee." Bata I'd another word for sticking, while the naí still comes from moncaí. (It also sounds a bit like Botany, which is the study of plants. I find that coincidence interesting).
9. Bodhráfear: Rillaboom
Pronounced "Bar-ah-far." Bodhrá comes from Bodhrán, which is an instrument that originates from Southern Galar. Fear just means man.
10. Leicag: Skwovet
Pronounced "Leh-cak." Combination of the words "leicean," meaning cheek, and "feòrag," meaning squirrel.
11. Sanntaille: Greedent
Pronounced "Sh-aunt-all-ah," (pronounce "Sh" with back of throat). Combination of the word Santach, meaning covetous, and saille, meaning fat (Kalosians might recognize that one one).

How I think the Blueberry E4 sound as an American
Just a little disclaimer before I begin, I am in no way, shape, or form an expert on sociolinguistics. This is just a fun little thing that I wanted to do, and you're welcome to have your own opinions on the matter! In fact, I encourage y’all to share your headcanons/knowledge too! I'm a history major, so I like to study people and learn about different people's opinions on subjects!
Ok, now that's out of the way, let's get into it now!
All of the BB4 are from Unova, so they are going to all have some variation of an American accent. Unova is supposed to represent the US but focuses mostly on the boroughs (neighborhoods) of New York City and some parts of Northern New Jersey that border the city. I did some research on Bulbapedia and found the real-life locations of the BB4's hometowns.
Before I actually really get in, I could honestly be so wrong, and they could just have a "general American accent". Pokemon, especially Pokemon Masters are kinda weird with accents. Like Galarian characters having a general American accent in the anime, and Viola being the only Kalosian to have an accent in Masters. But oh well, enough of my rambling lol.
I'm going in their official rank order for this!
Crispin:
Crispin is from Virbank City, which is Jersey City irl, and is the second largest city in New Jersey, falling behind Newark. This is a little trippy to me because the name is so similar to Burbank which is a city in Los Angeles County, California. But it's honestly much funnier that he's a Jersey boy, especially since he likes to cook; I just can't help but think about those Italian-Americans who get angry if you don't pronounce Mozzarella as "Muzzarell." Like watch out we've got Buddy Valastro from Cake Boss over here lmaooo. The video below is a pretty good example of what I imagine Crispin to sound like! Crispin = nicest guy in Jersey. Fuhgeddaboudit 🤌🏻
youtube
Amarys:
Amarys is from Castelia City, which is Lower Manhattan, also known as Downtown Manhattan or Downtown New York City irl. Basically, think of Wall Street and Battery Park. Now, with Amarys, she speaks very formally, so I'd imagine that she'd still have a Manhattan accent, just very watered down and omitting any slang. Most Americans talk extremely fast, so we tend to find ways to shorten our sentences with things like "y’all" instead of "you all," "talkin'" instead of "talking," "'cause" instead of "because," etc. You won't find Amarys speaking like that, she likes to speak in complete sentences. I couldn’t find any specific examples, so just imagine this video with a watered down New York accent.
youtube
Lacey:
Now this is where it gets a little tricky. So Lacey is from Nimbasa City, which is Midtown Manhattan irl. Think of Broadway, Rockefeller Center, and Grand Central Terminal (Battle Subway). But also, her dad, Clay, is the gym leader of Driftveil City, which is Union City, New Jersey irl, and has a very heavy Southern (Texan, I'd assume?) accent. So with Lacey, she probably has an accent that mixes all of these elements. Like Amarys, she speaks pretty formally, but not to Amarys’ level. I noticed that she tends to slip some Southern sayings, like “I’m plum tuckered out” in her dialogue. This mix happens a lot more than you may think! For example, I like to think I have a general accent, but I live in the US South, so I have a slight twang in certain words, such as y'all, and specific slang from the state I’m from. In addition, one of my parents is from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and the other is from New York City, New York (not being specific bc don't wanna dox myself lol), so I tend to dip into those accents and slang, especially around family. I can honestly see that being the same situation for Lacey. This is another one where I couldn’t find an example I really liked, so we’re just going to have to use our imaginations again! I’d imagine she’d have a mixture of New York, Texas, and one of the people with a generic accent, like the lady from Delaware. She’d mostly likely switch between these accents based on words, situations and who she’s talking to.
youtube
Drayton:
Drayton is from Opelucid City, which is Harlem and Washington Heights, neighborhoods in Upper Manhattan irl. Think of the Harlem Renaissance or the musical ‘In the Heights’. It's honestly so funny to imagine Drayton talking in an extremely thick accent lol. He definitely says things like schmear, pie (instead of pizza), Bodega, yerrrr/yurrr, and Manhatty.I honestly couldn’t find any really specific videos on people from Upper Manhattan, so I’m sorry this is a really generic video. Obviously he sounds somewhat like the man from New York.
youtube
Thanks for listening to my dumb spiel, this has been a great way to procrastinate my Uni work! I look forward to see what y’all think!

Hello you should infodump about water types right neow
I'll just pick one and stick with it otherwise it won't be coherent
Corsola up until about 200 years ago was only found in the southern hemisphere, they're technically invasive species north of the equator (except for Alola, they're native there). They tend to play pretty nice with local species at least around the Kanto-Johto-Hoenn area, though, so if you live around here you'll probably just see them referred to as 'non-native'. That's just the standard pink variant though, a lot of people are well aware of Galarian Corsola, what some call the 'bleached' variant. Galarian Corsola are 100% native to the isles, but didn't start looking like that until the industrial revolution was in full swing. They used to be a vibrant green, and because it was recorded as having access to grass-type moves, there's a lot of theorizing there. Some people think it had a symbiotic relationship with a species of algae that gave it energy, and that's why they tend to constantly have nutritional deficits today to the point where their only options for nutrition are directly sucking life out of other creatures or feeding them specially formulated diets, and the former is so rough on them and their system that it essentially breaks their corporeal form and they 'evolve' into Cursola. Genuinely there is not a single thing about modern-day Galarian Corsola that is not deeply upsetting.

Jellicent Facts
Tumblr media
(Art by celestial080 on Deviantart)
-The scientific name for Jellicent is "spiritus regius polypus" which translates to "Royal spirit octopus"
-Jellicent are cnidaria, making them relatives of Pokemon like Tentacruel and (surprisingly), Corsola
-Jellicent are rare to find in the wild since they spend so much of their time in the deepest parts of the ocean
-While a lot of people are afraid of Jellicent's way of eating, Jellicent rarely view people as food and mostly hunt other water types
-That being said, they have been known to hover around cruise ships. They are rarely actively hostile to the people on board however, and it could just be them watching humans around their territory
-Jelicent will make homes with other members of its colony around a bunch of sunken ships
-Jellicent form hierarchies under the water. A dominant leader will rule over the others of its colony, usually living in the biggest sunken ship. You can tell who the leader is by how big the crown is; the ones who eat the most souls are the most powerful
Tumblr media
-Unlike a lot of other species with sexuak dimirphism, both the males and the females evolved to show off the the other sex; not just the males showing off to females
-Female Jellicent don't actually have mouths; they're markings that they use to distract prey. They can make them move using illusions (headcanon from @adobe-outdesign )
-The Pringles company uses a yellow male Jellicent as their mascot
-In old Galar, Frillish and Jellicent were often owned by royalty to show wealth
-Speaking of the Royalty symbolism, there is actually an old Southern Galarian myth of a wealthy frillish lady being courted by a poor skrelp. The myth is referred to as "Dúlamán" and they use seaweed as a metaphor to tell a story
-Researchers suspect a deep sea variant that is a lot bigger, thinner, and more sinister looking
-Like most ghost types, Jellicent have a long lifespan

☆Day 10: Fairy Type☆
Galarian Skiploom. This reclusive species was discovered in a hidden grove filled with flowers of many kinds in the southern wilds of Galar. While not much is known about this variant yet, they seem to gather flowers and bring them to their homes where they plant and care for them. It seems the dust from their wings helps promote plant growth. Timid but friendly, if a trainer is able to befriend this Pokémon, they'll have a loyal companion for life."
The next addition for the Faketober Art Challenge by @xeeble !

The Aron-Lairon-Aggron evolutionary line had a long and extensive history on the battlefield long before and after the middle ages, being naturally very strong and tough fighters, while being fiercely loyal to their trainers. Lairon were by far the most common on the battlefield; many medieval trainers were not able to fully evolve their Lairon into Aggron for a multitude of reasons; they may not have had the resources to properly care for an Aggron, may not have skilled enough or their Lairon may not have survived in battle long enough to build the necessary experience. Nevertheless, Lairon were dependable heavy troops, proving to be excellent in defending valuable positions or holding key parts of a battle line. We also have a lot of evidence from the old Galarian Chronicle as well as a Kalosian tapestry that the old Housecarls of southern Galar made extensive use of Lairon; they would be used to charge weaker parts of an enemy shield wall using their weight and armour to essentially become a walking battering ram. Once the enemy formation was broken up, their trainers would be able to cut down the enemy with their large axes.
Aggron, though rarer as previously mentioned still definitely made a big impression on the battlefield. Essentially being just as well armoured as Lairon as well as being taller and most importantly more capable of dealing out attacks, Aggron were highly desired by lords and other noblemen as a strong part of any bodyguard; as well as being a status symbol thanks to the difficulty of raising one. Several martial arts manuscripts of the time detail ways to avoid Aggron attacks and if unable to fight them with one's own pokémon to attempt to neutralise them by jamming a spearhead or sword blade in its shoulder joints to lock them up and attempt to pierce the head armour with an anti armour dagger -we don't know how effective these techniques were but they would have been difficult to pull off. Some sources even make reference to Aggron being armed with human-made weapons, mainly polearms though we cannot be sure if this was something that was actually done.
So, Lairon and Aggron were both formidable foes on the battlefield, but they were also semi prevalent outside of battle... I'll make a follow up to this post tomorrow!

The Ghost of the Wood
At eight and three quarters, Anya was already starting to experience fatigue from moving.
Now that she was almost nine (“I’m practically ten!”), her parents gave her a more thorough explanation of her father’s job as a “Wandering Ranger”, and the importance of his job. The reason that they were always moving was because her father was always needed somewhere new
She supposed that made a sort of sense, but it also left Anya with no friends.
Denton was off on his trainer journey, and Anya wasn’t even certain she wanted to go on one.
A con-nun-drum if ever there was one. At least this new school had a big library
Living just south of Motostoke, the wooded area right by the house her family was renting had a reputation, one of the children at school had warned her.
“There’s a yamask in there!” A girl with pigtails warned “Said to be the worst thing this side of the watchtower! You need to be careful!”
When Anya asked why, the girl shushed her, attempting to touch her face, which made Anya startle and back up
She just rolled her eyes “Legend has it the spirit of the pokemon is a old warrior from the northern wars! And he haaates every southern galarian!”
“... But ahm northern”
“Hm… Maybe he’ll spare you! Maybe”
“What’d he even do? Is it even a he?”
Anya’s follow-up questions fell on deaf ears, as they usually did. No one ever seemed as curious as she was.
Oh well. She’d just have to look it up herself.
In her arms was a book on local folk tales from the school library, and she made her way back home on her own - the other kids all lived in the other direction, and she wanted to be alone and quiet anyway. So many of them were too loud and never shut up.
She gazed at the cover as she walked, signing the title to herself in an effort to practice her letter signing - she was better at words.
- A rustle in one of the bushes startled her
“GAH?! “OSE THERE????”
There was no immediate response.
“Who! Who is there! Is it the Yamask of the wood??” She called out
Nothing else moved again.
Anya huffed “Startlin’ people isn’t polite!”
Again - no response.
Anya took a deep breath, then looked down at the book.
Does she dare?
.. Yeah, she was gonna dare.
“Mams not expecting me home for a bit… i can go lookin” she reasoned
She took a breath, and stepped into the wood
It was admittedly not very dense. The trees were rather thin, and the brush was low to the ground - that meant the wood was young? That's what Anya had read once in a book about trees and forests - if she remembered correctly.
She always remembered correctly.
Anya cleared her throat, before yelling out “Yamask!!!! Where’s the Yamask ‘ere?!”
It was a foolproof plan, really
Call out for it, it will come, and she can ask it questions!
Easy!
“Yamask!!!”
“Yamask?? Can I ask ya some question’s???”
“Yamask!!!!!!”
Anya was yelling at the top of her lungs now.
“WHERE CAN I FIND A YAMASK IN HERE???”
“YA-MAHHHH”
Anya jumped and turned around, now facing who she’d been looking for
“There you are!!”
The Yamask in question gave her a bizarre expression.
“Ya took y’r time respondin’ t’me” She pouted “Ya gonna kill me ‘r what?”
“... Yah?”
“Yes?”
“Yamah!!!” The pokemon looked offended at the assumption.
“... No…?”
The yamask nodded, still scowling
“Oh…. theeeen whaddaya doing in a forest? Aren’t’cha under a bridge?”
“Yamah! Yah!”
“No? But I thought y’r stone was from an old bridge?”
The one sided conversation continued - with the yamask responding mostly verbally, and seeming pretty baffled at the child’s complete lack of fear.
She was lingering, she was talking, she was fiddling with her hands and bouncing on her heels.
The sun was starting to go down.
The child didn’t seem to notice.
“Oh, oh are you from the independence wars??”
“ANYA!???!?!”
The girl paused in her rambling
“... uh oh”
“ANYA AMBERMIGHT?!?”
“Uh -uh - Here, Mum!!”
“Ooh young lady y’r in so much trouble!!!”
The Yamask looked to the girl, then out towards where the yelling was coming from.
“Uh, that’s my mum”
“Yah-mah” the yamask sounded sarcastic, though Anya didn’t pick up on it.
“I’ll be back tomorrow! Earlier!” She tells him “Be here!”
“Yama???”
“Please??” “ANYA!!”
“I’m COMING!!”
And before the yamask could react to the plea, the girl ran off.
Were children always like this??
Sure, the Yamask didn’t remember much of it’s past life, but there was no way children from when he was a human were this dense.
Particularly human children
But yet, the girl showed up the next day, this time without the book in her hands.
Now she had a notepad
“Yamask!!?” She called out again, with the pokemon in question hiding behind one of the thicker trees in the wood
He watched as she continued to look for him, calling out
“Yamask!! I have questions!!”
What? Questions??
“Please???”
The Yamask saw the disappointment paint the girls face.
She had stopped yelling
“... Am I bein’ too loud?”
The Yamask tilted his head at the question.
“... I chased ‘im away, didn’t I?” The girl sighed, looking down at her feet. “A course…”
The Yamask stared at her as she sat down on the ground with a very upset expression.
And then she sniffled. “A’course I did it again….” She dropped her notepad, pulling up her knees to her face. “Was I .. too loud?”
Oh, oh great, now the Yamask was feeling bad.
The girl had shoved her head into her knees, sniffling again.
Was… was she just going to sit there?
The yamask cautiously floated out from behind his hiding place.
Oh no.
Oh no, she wasn’t crying, was she?
He didn’t make a child cry by ignoring her, did he???
uuuugh
He hated crying children - it left such a terrible feeling mulling about in his head. He’d be guilty for the next decade at least.
Making himself more visible, the pokemon floated over the moping child, who seemed to be just on the verge of tears.
Oh, no, he really had made her upset by hiding!!
He thought over everything he’d done in those few minutes - why was he being so mean in the first place!? She was just a child! Children are curious things!
She was more curious than others was all!!
“... Yah?”
Startled, the girl looked up through skewed glasses.
Well, wasn’t that adorable and a little pitying
“... You’re still here?”
He tilted his head, floating idly, unsure how to answer such a question.
“.... I’m sorry if I bothered you” her little voice trailed off. “You can go if ya wan’”
ugh
He floated down a bit, and nudged at her notepad.
She looked down at it, then back up at him.
“.. Ya wanna… answer m’questions?”
The yamask nodded
The girl seemed to jump out of her skin at the answer, moving a bit awkwardly to stand back up with her notepad.
“Oh - good - thank you! Thank you kindly!!”
She clicked her little pen “Uh, My name is Anya! Do you have a name???”
The Yamask shook its head.
“Huh, guess tha’s fine” Anya nodded “I uh, got a few questions. They’re all yes an’ no, i’s tha’ okay?”
The Yamask nodded, and Anya’s lopsided smile grew into an excited lopsided grin.
Oh, adorable.
She jumped right into questioning him.
“Are ya older than the wood?”
“Are you from around here?”
“Oh! You’re from the north then? Me too!”
As if her accent didn’t make it blatantly obvious.
Her questions kept on coming, until-
“BEEP”
“Oh!”
“Yah!”
“Oh, tha’s my alarm from mah timer!” Anya pointed out, grabbing a little stopwatch from her jacket pocket “So mum doesn’t come lookin’ for me!”
Ah, smart.
“Uh… can I ask ya more stuff tomorrah?”
The Yamask contemplated it.
Would it hurt? She was so curious!
Tentatively, the pokemon gave the girl a nod, and she started to excitedly jump
“Oh, thank ya! Thank ya!”
She checked to make sure she had all of her things, before giving him a grin “See ya tamarrah!” She managed to say as she started running off, her accent swallowing some of the consonants.
The floating ghost pokemon heaved a sigh of some kind
Would she keep coming? Get bored?
He supposed he’d have to wait and see

27. Are you good at keeping secrets?
6. What's your Native Language?
I'd say I'm pretty good at keeping secrets. I'm not much of a gossip, and I've had no reason to share any.
My Native language is old Southern Galarian since the place I grew up in still mostly spoke that.

the dex entries of the pokémon you train say a lot about you.
ZORUA: To protect themselves from danger, they hide their true identities by transforming into people and Pokémon.
MIMIKYU: Although it’s a quiet, lonely Pokémon, if you try to look at what’s under its rag, it will become agitated and resist violently.
GENGAR: It apparently wishes for a traveling companion. Since it was once human itself, it tries to create one by taking the lives of other humans.
GALARIAN MEOWTH: Deeply proud and keenly smart, this Pokémon moves with cunning during battle and relentlessly attacks enemies’ weak points.
LITTEN: It doesn’t allow its emotions to be easily seen. Earning its trust takes time. It prefers solitude.
TOGEPI: It transforms the kindness and joy of others into happiness, which it stores in its shell.
MAWILE: it uses its docile-looking face to lull foes into complacency, then bites with its huge, relentless jaws.
CORSOLA: Clusters of Corsola congregate in warm seas where they serve as ideal hiding places for smaller Pokémon. When the water temperature falls, this Pokémon migrates to the southern seas.
SKITTY: It is said to be difficult to earn its trust. However, it is extremely popular for its cute looks and behavior.
EEVEE: It has the ability to alter the composition of its body to suit its surrounding enviorment
PICHU: It still can't use electricity well. When it's surprised or excited, it discharges electricity unintentionally
TRAPINCH: As it digs through the sand, its giant jaws crush any rocks that obstruct its path. It builds a funnel-shaped nest.

Random Pokemon Location Headcanons
-Hoenn has the least of an emphasis on a formal education and kids are much more focused on wilderness and survival skills- street smarts for when you live in a region with extreme weather and terrain at every step. That is, except for LaRousse City, which is actually Kalosian territory and follows Kalosian child education laws, which are much stricter.
-Olivine City in Johto is one of the world’s leading fish suppliers.
-Pewter City is known for its old mines and quarries and is generally considered a pretty dangerous area once you’re outside town outskirts. There are tons of ‘no trespassing’ signs everywhere and fines will be given.
-Petalburg City has the largest suburban sprawl of Hoenn, though much of it still backs up to dense woods.
-Snowpoint City has the largest skii resort industry.
-Castelia City has the highest net traffic for imports from across the world.
-Virbank City has the most Refined Steel exports, and imports raw ore mostly from Sinnoh.
-Alola was voted happiest region.
-Alolan Children are taught from a young age which pokemon at the seaside are safe and which aren’t to prevent poisonings from washed-up pokemon.
-Alolans tend to dominate swimming at the Pokelympics, Sinnohans the winter sports, Kalosians fencing, Unovans contemporary sports like skateboarding, Hoenners (Hoennians? Hoennites?) rock climbing and judo, Johtoans gymnastics, Galarians rugby, and Kantonians track and field.
-Galarians are generally considered to have the strongest accents, though Kalosians and Hoenners are close behind. (in my mind, it’s british, french, and then southern/Appalachian american). Sinnohans tend to have the most slow-paced and annunciative accents.

Articuno (#144)
Irisignusdus nixavis borealis (original Articuno) Irisignusdus nixavis australius (Galarian Articuno)
Disclaimer: Articuno are a very mysterious and incredibly rare Pokémon, and like all mysterious Pokémon that means the information provided in this bestiary is not necessarily known to the common masses nor well-known in the scientific community. The information is provided for completion of knowledge on a meta level, not with expectation that it is known in-universe.
General Information: There are two sub-species of Articuno, the Southern and Northern variants (the Galarian and Original regional forms respectively, as they are known in the games). Articuno are the subject of many cultures’ mythos over the millennia, which gives the species an air of mysticality that may or may not be warranted, depending on who you ask.
They are incredibly rare Pokémon who are said to be capable of chilling the air around them to create blizzards, and can control ice at will. The (G) variant in the Antarctic Circle is a Psychic type that keeps itself afloat in the air with its psychic powers without having to land, and its capable of shooting energy beams from its eyes—yikes!
Divinity: Articuno are classified as minor demigods, which basically means their divine lineage from Mew and Ho-oh is low enough to still give them some divine traits (in this case, chronological immortality) but their mortality makes them just as susceptible to other types of death as any other creature, nor would their hypothetical death cause unfathomable catastrophe upon the balance of the world/universe (thus would not result in an eventual direct reincarnation). It also means that, as mortals, they reproduce as mortals do, but their divinity means that they can only reproduce with themselves or Mews. Many would argue that this is the best of both worlds, the benefits of divinity but without the curse of true immortality. But it does mean that they can be caught in Pokeballs just like any other mortal Pokémon.
Habitat: They only live in the Arctic and Antarctic Circles, where they make their nests in the distant mountains.
Life Cycle: An incredibly long-lived species with a very slow reproduction rate and an equally slow death rate. Given that they are chronologically immortal due to their trace divinity, they have no upper limit on their lifespans.
Articuno can lay a single egg at least every 7 years, where the newborn is cared for by both parents for 3 years, then its old enough to leave the nest. Individuals become reproductively mature when they reach 25 years old-ish, but many will take years or even decades to find a suitable mate. Again, because of the influence of divinity, Articuno are a sexless species who can pair with any other Articuno (or Mew).
Behavior: The mating process is long and elaborate in Articuno, involving complex dances, auroras, songs, and many more grand gestures of affection. Those who witness it are in awe, and the courtship process lasts for as long as the individuals choose to be together. Articunos have been seen having multiple mates in the same nest, so it can be safely assumed that their relationships are just as complicated as humans.
They are kind creatures who show themselves to (doomed) lost travelers and will guide them to safety.
Diet: They have slow metabolisms and do not need to eat terribly often, but when they do they tend to eat fruits during the growing season, and creatures like Frosmoths, Snovers, Swinubs, Spheals, Sealeos, Walreins, and Piloswines during the other times of the year.
Conservation: Not applicable. There is insufficient scientific data to have any meaningful label one way or the other.
Relationship with Humans: Not much is known about them on a scientific basis. They are only ever sighted in the Arctic and Antarctic Circles. There are no current legal protections for Articuno, since the general consensus is that they seem perfectly capable of protecting themselves.
In general, only certain Indigenous Peoples and Pokémon Rangers of the Far North know anything about Articuno, and they have collectively been unwilling to reveal their knowledge to the public. The Southern subspecies is even more elusive and mysterious to science, and even the scientists at the Antarctic research stations seldom spot them on expeditions.
With that said, here is what most do know about them: Articuno appear in the mythos of many cultures that inhabit the Great North and the Great South. In the Arctic Circle, it’s believed that Articunos only appear to the doomed who are lost in mountains and it guides them to safety. It’s translucent wings are supposedly made of an ice so cold that it freezes the moisture in the atmosphere. Because of this, it is said that when it flaps its beautiful wings, snow falls and creates blizzards. Many cultures have different legends surrounding Articuno that vary wildly, with more of those details being saved for its entry in the Mythology section.
Classification: As with all three of the legendary bird trio, Articuno are in the same single-genus family, Irisignusidae, as each other and Ho-oh, to whom the taxa are named after. The name comes from “Iris” (rainbow) and “ignus” (fire). “Nixavis” is “nix” (ice) and “avis” (bird) combined. “Borealis” refers to one subspecies’s location in the North, and “Australius” refers to the other’s location in the South.

Geography of Galar
Tumblr media
Galar is my home region, and I wanna talk about it more since there's actually multiple cultural regions of Galar. And, at some parts, even different languages! So, here's some stuff about Galar!
Languages
Just getting this out of the way. The most common language spoken in Galarian is, well, Galarian. But there are actually many different 'subcategories' of Galarian. For example, the Galarian I'm speaking is Hammerlock Galarian. But some parts will speak Lean (a language that isn't that common and is spoken and originated in the Glimwood Tangle area), while others might speak other forms of old Galarian. Keep in mind that the languages aren't as common as they used to be because the Hammerlocke kingdom colonized a lot of places. So you won't be completely lost if you visit these places and don't speak the local language.
Southern Galar
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Also called Dùaicha by locals, which doesn't really have a direct translation, but it has the old Galarian words for 'country', 'white', and 'field'. Southern Galar is mostly a farming part of Galar, where people have strong accents. The history is pretty neat, as it was once inhabited by different tribes and clans before the people of Hammerlock came and forced them away from their culture. As a lot of history passed, and Hammerlock's kingdom soon died out, the people of Southern Galar were able to gain their cultures back, but of course, there were reproductions, as a lot of their history was lost. While they mostly speak Hammerlock Galarian there, words will sometimes be different.
The people that live in the Crown Tundra tend to have heavier accents (basically the stereotypical Galarian accent you hear all the time), and tend to speak Hammerlock Galarian less.
Central Southern Galar
Tumblr media
The place I grew up! Central Southern Galar contains the 1st (first) Wild Area, Turtfield, and the 3rd most populated city in Galar, Motostoke.
The history of Motostoke is rather interesting, being founded in the 1st century and controlled by the old Hammerlock kings. But as time went on and technology started to improve, Motostoke became one of the first industrialized cities in the world!
The Wild Area tends to be different. For one, there's barely any towns there, with some houses and cottages scattered about. And since it's not near most people, they tend to speak old Souther Galarian there (which I would speak with my parents and the other people in the area I lived in). In ancient times, multiple tribes and clans lived in the area, living side-by-side with the Pokemon around them. But the people of the old clans went away for various reasons (colonization, slowly failing economies, disputes, wars, etc).
Turtfield is the second most well-known city in Central Galar 1, purely because one of the gym leaders lives there. The history is still pretty neat, with the artwork depicting the Darkest Day. It's also one of the oldest towns in Galar, still having a lot of culture involved with it.
Central Galar
Tumblr media
Hammerlocke
One of the most well-known cities in Galar, which I find interesting since it's not even the capital (Wyndon is). Being one of an old kingdom, descendants from old Hammerlocke are known as Hammerlockians Anyways, Hammerlocke is located in the center of Galar, but I wanna mention it because a lot of stuff has happened here. I can't explain the entire history of it, because I'm most likely not qualified to do that.
But Hammerlocke was a super power in the Galar region, and it managed to colonize a lot of stuff, and is one of the reasons Hammerlocke Galarian is spoken all throughout Galar, spoken in Unova, and a commonly learned second language around the world. They had a monarchy and were run by kings and a couple of queens.
Other than the colonization, Hammerlocke was also known as 'The Dragon Hunters.'' They hunted a lot of dragon types in Galar to extinction, and even as Pokemon started co existing with humans, there was still a lot of stigma around having Dragin types in or near the city, and having one could get you seriously in trouble. Hammerlock actually designed their buildings like that to scare off dragon types. There also one of the reasons Flapple and Appletun look the way they do; they had to evolve to look friendlier to NOT get killed by them!
But now, Hammerlocke is one of the safest places to own a Dragon type in Galar. The wide and expansive area of it as well as the stigma of the area disappearing had led Hammerlocke to almost completely get rid of that stigma entirely (I also like to put that on the popularity of the gym leader here. Ngl, I might've had a crush on him when I was younger).
Central Galar is also home to the second Wild Area. Even fewer people live there compared to the first Wild Area since it holds a lot more dangerous Pokemon.
West-Central Galar
Tumblr media
West-Central Galar holds the Leantír and the Creuilg area.
Leantír is the term that refers to the entire Glimwood Tangle area. The word Lea is a Galarian suffix for woodlands or a clearing. Tír is just Southern Galarian for land. The people who reside in this area are known as the Lean people. A cool thing about them is that they are one of the few groups that managed to avoid the colonization of Hammerlocke, purely because the people in Hammerlocke thought that Glimwood Tangle was too dangerous since of the Pokemon there. Because of this, the culture was able to grow free from colonization, and their language has been preserved throughout the years.
There was some stuff that happened though. Like how a guy found Indeedee 7,000 years ago in Glimwood Tangle and took them out to breed them. But another thing that isn't well known is that Leantír use to spread a lot farther than it does now, reaching all the way down to the Stow-on-Side area, and even a bit of Hammerlocke! But Hammerlocke cut down their trees and got rid of their dangerous Pokemon fairly quickly. The Pokemon of the forest than became more wary of people from Hammerlocke, and they ended up attacking any human that wasn't from deeper in the forest, which is why Hammerlocke never went that far.
Creulig is a combination of the old Galarian word for rock and blood (referring to the red-like color of the canyons). One of the largest towns there (Stow-on-side) holds a gym challenge there. It's also the only desert on Mainland Galar.
There were civilizations here in the ancient past, which were realized when old artifacts were found here. But little is known about that civilization, as the history of it only started being documented when newer people moved in.
East-Central Galar
Tumblr media
East-Central Galar holds the Nixalba area, which got its name from a forgotten language. "Nix" means snow, while "alba" means white.
The history of the area is really cool (no pun intended), with the Circhester town being around for thousands of years. Originally, Circhester was made in 60 AD, where the first settlers there used the hot springs in the area as a spa area and built their town around it. It became a really popular tourist spot, with the added gym challenge making it even more popular.
The places around it (like Spikemuth and route 8) used to be a lot colder, but climate change and global warming have made it the way it is today. Route 8 has faced a lot of weathering and erosion, which is what gives it its more rocky appearance. But ancient people of the Nixalba area lived there, giving it the ruins it has. In the Hulbury area, people have used that place as a fishing port for hundreds of years.
Northern Galar
Tumblr media
Other than the Wyndon district, Northern Galar is inhabited much because of the large mountains making it hard for people to live there. Mostly hikers, researchers, and explorers head there.
However, the history of Wyndon is really interesting. The main city itself was founded in 43 CE when the Hammerlocke kingdom was making its way around Galar. Most of the ancient tribes that lived there were wiped out, and not much is known about the tribes that resided here (which is sad).
The Isle of Armor
Tumblr media
The Isle of Armor is a subregion of Galar. Back then, a lot of immigrants from Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh came here, and the culture here reflects that. This place is very popular for trainers coming here to get stronger because of the famous dojo they have here.
So yeah, that's the Galar region! Have fun with this information!
Ooc stuff
Honestly, I know this probably isn't accurate to irl UK, but I think it would just be boring to restate UK history. Plus, I don't want the world building to be EXACTLY like it is irl. For one, the game doesn't mention much colonization, and I like that idea. But it would make sense that Galar would have some colonization (it's literally the UK), But I also like the idea of different languages being more common, since it sucks that irl UK has a bunch of dying languages because of colonization. So instead, I made them have colonization, but the languages would stay semi-alive, where you would meet a lot more people that would speak them.
The Isle of Armor was based on The Isle of Man, which mostly has a Celtic history. But from what we see in the game, it has a lot of East Asian inspiration, and I wanted to reflect that here.
I purposely made the places seem bigger than they were since it's stupid to only imagine one small town in the entirety of an area. Plus, we only really see that stuff in the game because it's all we need to see. We can assume there's more people and towns there.
The old clans and tribes are supposed to be old Celtic tribes, but I couldn't think of a name to give them in the Pokemon world...
