They stiffen up when Elesa’s hand goes down to press against the crown of their head, but … they don’t flinch. Being touched by people, especially those they don’t know — is hard, and Ree has to remind themself that Elesa isn’t going to hurt them. She’s worried about them. She’s not going to hurt them.

The scars running up and down their face, their neck, their arms, shows just why they’re so anxious about letting another grownup close.

They’d never actually use her number. Elesa is a tourist, a stranger, someone who’s going to leave in a few days, a few weeks, and ree isn’t stupid. They can see how anxious and scared she is.

They’re not going to force someone to confront their fears like that. That would be a dick fucking move.
